Question: How can statistical modelling tools (GLMM) and GIS be used as an aid in understanding complex ecological patterns? This general question was approached by using bryophyte demography data as an example. More specifically, we asked what is the contribution of terrain shape to explaining the performance and fate of plant individuals, controlling for all other known relationships? Location: Norway. Methods: Information on demography was obtained for 140 populations of the perennial clonal bryophyte Hylocomium splendens in Norway spruce forests during an 11‐year period (1992‐2002). Performance (size and branching pattern) was recorded for mature segments and fate was recorded for growing points. Positions of each of the more than 30 000 recorded bryophyte ramets were coupled with (micro‐) topographic characteristics (slope and convexity) derived from fine‐scale digital elevation models in a GIS framework. Carefully planned sequences of generalised linear mixed models (GLMM) were performed to test predictions from a conceptual path model. Results: We demonstrate strong dependence of size on branching, fate and on vertical position in the bryophyte carpet, and an effect of vertical position on branching pattern. Micro‐topography contributed to explaining plant performance by four different mechanisms: (1) a direct effect of slope on the segment's vertical position in the carpet; (2‐3) direct effects of both slope and convexity on fates of individuals via controls on risk of burial; and (4) an indirect effect of convexity on branching pattern via a direct effect on size. No indication of a direct effect of terrain on branching was found. Conclusions: Our study exemplifies the usefulness of GLMM for disentangling complex ecological relationships. Specifically, we recognise micro‐topography as a potentially important factor for plant demography in general and for performance and fate of individuals in particular.  相似文献

Abstract

The sex ratio and factors that affect sporophyte production were studied by following one population of the clonal moss Hylocomium splendens growing on top of a boulder in a S.E. Norwegian boreal spruce forest valley for 5 years. Sex of ca 75% of all segments recorded during the study period could be determined from records of occurrence of sporophytes, gametangia and branching patterns. The population had a 4:1 female-biased sex ratio. Of 1005 female segments recorded during the 5-year study period, 29.8% carried sporophytes. The frequency of sporophyte production in female segments varied more than threefold among years, and was apparently related to climatic favourability for bryophyte growth and development. At the scale of H. splendens segments, sporophyte production was favoured by large size of segments and high relative growth rates. A distinct low-size threshold for sporophyte production occurred in all years. This threshold was higher in years of low sporophyte frequency, with an absolute low limit of ca 2 mg segment dry weight. The fraction of female segments with sporophytes, and the number of sporophytes per sporophyte-carrying segment, increased with segment size from the low threshold to an upper size threshold, beyond which further increase in segment size did not imply increased sporophyte frequency. This may be caused by the spatial distribution of sex organs. Sporophyte production increased strongly upwards in the bryophyte carpet, even after vertical variation in size had been taken into account. This indicates that radiation plays a key role in initiation of sexual branches, and that the processes previously demonstrated to regulate vegetative branching apply to branching in general.  相似文献

Female reproductive success in the unisexual perennial clonal moss Hylocomium splendens was examined by recording, if the segment was reproductive [produced sporophyte(s)] or not, together with several distance-to-male and male density variables, and segment size. This was done for every female segment in a population over a 5 year study period. A high fraction of the population could be sexed because we monitored the population in situ for 5 years, and thereafter harvested the population for electrophoretic analysis from which the clonal identity and expressed sex could be deduced. Fertilization distances in H. splendens were short, indicated by the fact that as many as 85% of the female segments with sporophytes were situated within a distance of 5.0 cm from the nearest male. The longest distance measured between a sporophytic female and the closest male was 11.6 cm. However, analysed within a generalized linear modelling (GLM) framework, the year was the best single predictor for the presence of H. splendens sporophyte although female-segment size and distance to the closest situated male were also strongly significant. The two latter factors explained larger fractions of variation in sporophyte presence in a GLM model with three predictors than in single-predictor models. This is because (i) the large variation in sporophyte production among years partly obscures the strong general increase in sporophyte production with increasing female-segment size and vitality, and (ii) the between-year variation and the size obscure the effect of the distance to the most proximate male. To our knowledge, this study is the first to incorporate into one model the relative importance of several factors for bryophyte reproductive success. Our results demonstrate the value of multiple-predictor approaches in studies of reproductive success.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of important population or individual characteristics are expected to reflect structuring ecosystem processes to the extent that populations with strikingly different spatial patterns most likely have been structured by different processes. Few studies of spatial pattern in plant assemblages, bryophyte assemblages in particular, still exist and pattern has only vaguely been linked with process. In this study we describe fine-scale spatial variation in size and the occurrence of terminated (non-branching) segments in 21 Norwegian populations of the dominant boreal forest moss Hylocomium splendens, in search for general patterns of spatial structure. All Hylocomium splendens segments in the investigated plots were followed for a 10-year period; their size (dry mass, estimated from in situ measurements) and fate (terminated or ramifying) were recorded annually. The spatial structure of size and terminating segments at scales from 0.5 to 16 cm was described for each population as fractal dimension profiles, derived from semi-variograms. For about one half of the populations size and terminating segments could be assigned to a specific spatial pattern, the predicted outcome of one of three main structuring processes: (i) negative spatial dependence (fractal dimension F>3.0) on the scale of individuals (below 2 cm), indicative of negative interactions; (ii) positive spatial dependence (F<3.0) on the scale of individuals, indicative of positive interactions; and (iii) positive spatial dependence on broader (4–8 cm) scales, indicative of structuring by environmental factors or patchy disturbance. Patterns (i) and (iii) were observed both for size and terminated segments more often than expected. Fractal dimension profiles for size obtained separately for each year revealed temporal patterns of spatial structure that tended to be invariant over years. Negative spatial dependence of size, possibly due to large size difference between buried segments and other segments during self thinning, was typical of populations rapidly growing in number. Positive spatial dependence with a range of influence by the spatial process of 4–8 cm was observed in plots with sparse bryophyte cover and high cover of deciduous litter, probably due to accumulation of litter in depressions between shoots or groups of shoots. The main finding of this study is that different populations of the same species in the same type of ecosystem can be spatially structured in different ways. This accords with a model for the studied system as consisting of a mosaic of cells, of spatial extent of a few cm or larger, intergrading in space and temporally dynamic, the population characteristics of each cell being shaped by several structuring processes that vary, temporally and spatially, in their relative importance.  相似文献

Question: Does the understorey vegetation of Norwegian boreal forests change in relation to broad‐scale, long‐term changes? Location: Norway. Methods: Permanently marked 1‐m2 vegetation plots from 17 monitoring reference areas in forests dominated by Picea abies (11 areas, 620 plots) and Betula spp. (six areas, 300 plots) were analysed twice, at the start in 1988–1997 and 5 yr later (1993–2002). Species subplot frequency data were analysed separately for each area by univariate and multivariate statistical methods; 5‐yr changes in single species abundances, species number per plot and species composition were tested. Results: Two distinct patterns of change were found: 1. Abundance of several vascular plant species decreased in SE Norwegian Picea forests, most noticeably of species with a preference for richer soils, such as Oxalis acetosella. 2. Abundance of many bryophyte species as well as bryophyte species number per plot increased in forests of both types over most of Norway. Conclusions: The pattern of vascular plant changes is probably a time‐delayed response of long‐lived, mainly clonal, populations to acidified soils resulting from deposition of long‐distance airborne pollutants. The pattern bryophyte changes, with reference to the close link between climatic conditions for growth and abundance changes for Hylocomium splendens established in previous demographic studies, is related to climatic conditions favourable for bryophyte growth. We conclude that many forest understorey plants are sensitive indicators of environmental change, and that the concept used for intensive monitoring of Norwegian forests enables early detection of changes in vegetation brought about by broad‐scale, regional, impact factors.  相似文献

The mossHylocomium splendenshas two different growth forms.Sympodial growth occurs where the apical meristem ceases activityannually and growth is continued by a lateral bud. Sympodialplants are vertical and self-supporting. Monopodial growth occurswhen the apex continues growth. Monopodial plants are prostrate. The aims of the study were to examine stem mechanics of thedifferent growth forms and to compare mechanical propertiesalong stems. Stems of annual segments were subjected to threepoint bending tests. In sympodial plants the stiffness of thestem material increased significantly with segment age. Flexuralrigidity increased significantly with age in segments from 1to 4 years old, and then declined. Segment diameter decreasedsignificantly with age in sympodial plants. Monopodial plantsshowed no significant effects of segment age on the diameter, material stiffness or flexural rigidity of stems. Sympodialsegments were significantly wider, stronger, more rigid andcomposed of stiffer material with a higher stress at yield thanmonopodial segments, but did not have a larger proportion ofstrengthening material. Sympodial stems had significantly morecellulose than monopodial stems. Plant–plant interactions change through succession from facilitative to competitive. At early stages of succession, early‐colonizing plants can increase the survival and reproductive output of other plants by ameliorating disturbance and stressful conditions. At later stages of succession, plant interactions are more competitive as plants put more energy toward growth and reproduction. In northern temperate rainforests, gap dynamics result in tree falls that facilitate tree regeneration (nurse logs) and bryophyte succession. How bryophyte‐tree seedling interactions vary through log succession remains unclear. We examined the relationships of tree seedlings, bryophyte community composition, bryophyte depth, and percent canopy cover in 166 1.0 m2 plots on nurse logs and the forest floor in the Hoh rainforest in Washington, USA, to test the hypothesis that bryophyte‐tree seedling interactions change from facilitative to competitive as the log decays. Tree seedling density was highest on young logs with early‐colonizing bryophyte species (e.g., Rhizomnium glabrescens) and lowest on decayed logs with Hylocomium splendens, a long‐lived moss that reaches depths >20 cm. As a result, bryophyte depth increased with nurse log decay and was negatively associated with tree seedling density. Tree seedling density was 4.6× higher on nurse logs than on the forest floor, which was likely due to competitive exclusion by forest floor plants, such as H. splendens. Nurse logs had 17 species of bryophytes while the forest floor had six, indicating that nurse logs contribute to maintaining bryophyte diversity. Nurse logs enable both tree seedlings and smaller bryophyte species to avoid competition with forest floor plants, including the dominant bryophyte, H. splendens. H. splendens is likely a widespread driver of plant community structure given its dominance in northern temperate forests. Our findings indicate that plant–plant interactions shift with succession on nurse logs from facilitative to competitive and, thus, influence forest community structure and dynamics.  相似文献

The morphology of the nephrons of the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae was investigated by light microscopy. Each nephron is composed of a large renal corpuscle with well‐vascularized glomerulus, non‐ciliated neck segment, proximal convoluted tubule divided into distinct first and second segments, non‐ciliated intermediate segment, distal tubule, collecting tubule and collecting duct. The parietal layer of the Bowman's capsule of the renal corpuscle is composed of low cuboidal cells. The short non‐ciliated neck segment is lined by cuboidal epithelium. The first and second proximal segments display a prominent brush border and contain amorphous material in their lumen. The second proximal segment differs from the first segment in having taller columnar epithelium and a relatively narrow lumen. The intermediate segment is lined by non‐ciliated columnar epithelium and its lumen appears empty. The distal tubule is narrow in diameter and its cuboidal epithelium is devoid of intercalated cells. A unique feature of L. chalumnae is having binucleate cells in the tubule and collecting duct epithelium. The renal arteries have poorly developed tunica media and its cells contain granular material. The structure of L. chalumnae nephrons correlates well with their osmoregulatory function and resembles those of euryhaline teleosts.  相似文献

To obtainHylocomium splendens (Hedw.) BSG. that varied in metal(K, Mg, Ca and Zn) content, moss samples were collected fromsix sites around a zinc contaminated area of Latvia; metal contentswere artificially lowered by branch excision. The first fullyexpanded annual segment (mature segments), together with theunexpanded segment (juvenile segment) were grown in the laboratorywith watering from below. The contents of K, Mg, Ca and Zn innew growth were correlated with initial contents in the juvenile+maturesegments. However, the concentrations of these metals in thenew growth were generally not correlated with those in the pre-experimentalsegments. The excision of branches from the mature segment favouredsubsequent branch development in the young juvenile segmentover further growth of the already expanded mature segment, but less new growth was observed when branches were excised. Abstract

We simulated a predicted environmental change in a subarctic-alpine plant community to study short-term growth in Hylocomium splendens, and three-year effects in abundance changes of the five most common bryophytes at Latnjajaure, northern Sweden. The experiment had a factorial design with increased temperature and nutrients, alone and in combination. Moss growth was measured during the 1995 growing season, and we measured species abundance before and after three years of environmental perturbation. The combined treatments of fertilizer and temperature enhancement caused a decreased growth in length and dry weight in H. splendens. There was a significant decrease in abundance of Rhytidium rugosum in the combined temperature and fertilizer treatment. The other four common bryophyte species (Aulacomnium turgidum, Dicranum groenlandicum, Hylocomium splendens, and Ptilidium ciliare) showed weaker, but not significant trends in the same direction. As the bryophytes are an important component of arctic and subarctic vegetation, we expect that they will play a key role in the impact of anticipated Global Change on the ecosystems.  相似文献

The introduced tree species Spathodea campanulata (Bignoniaceae) forms novel forests in Puerto Rico, these having emerged after the abandonment of fields in the mid‐20th century and resulting in forests with a new species composition. We assessed bryophyte species richness in these novel forests and sought correlations with geological substrate, past land use, forest edge and patch area, forest structure, elevation, microhabitat diversity, tree species richness, and microclimatic conditions. Transects were established (edge and forest interior) in nine moist forest patches dominated by Spathodea in north‐central Puerto Rico. These Spathodea forest patches ranged from 0.6 to 9 ha. ANOVA, Chi‐square, correlation, and cluster analyses were used in data analyses. We found 57 bryophyte species. There was a significant difference in bryophyte richness among patches. Those on karst exhibited highest bryophyte richness due to microhabitat diversity, past land use, and shorter hydroperiods. Alluvial sites scored lowest in bryophyte species richness, and forest structure was important for bryophyte communities on these sites. Significant differences in temperature, relative humidity, and light intensity were observed between edge and forest interior. These appeared important for establishing bryophyte species cover but not richness and composition. Microhabitat diversity, patch area, and forest age were more related to bryophyte species richness than elevation, exposed edge, and tree species richness, regardless of geologic substrate. Collectively, Spathodea patches were similar to mature forests on the Island with respect to bryophyte species richness and composition. Novel Spathodea forests have conservation value due to their habitat suitability for bryophyte communities.  相似文献

Abstract

Epiphytic bryophytes were studied on two tree species with different bark characteristics (Alnus glutinosa and Carpinus betulus) in two vertical ranges (0–60 and 60–200 cm height above ground on the trunk) in a stream valley in the Carpathian Basin (N.W. Hungary). There is a significant difference in the species composition of the trees. Dicranum montanum and Platygyrium repens occurred significantly more often on Alnus glutinosa, whereas Frullania dilatata and Radula complanata were more often on Carpinus betulus in both vertical ranges. Orthotrichum species were typical only in the vertical range 60–200 cm on Carpinus betulus, whereas Plagiothecium nemorale and Metzgeria furcata were typical of Alnus glutinosa and Carpinus betulus, respectively, in the vertical range 0–60 cm. Although most of the bryophyte species have significant phorophyte preferences, Hypnum cupressiforme (in both vertical ranges) and Isothecium alopecuroides (in vertical range 0–60 cm) are indifferent in this respect. Our findings showed clearly that phorophyte preference and vertical position on the trunk are not independent variables. We investigated the independence of the frequencies and abundances of bryophyte species in the two vertical ranges separately on the two tree species. The species form four different groups: (1) species with greater abundance in the higher vertical range; (2) species with smaller abundance in the higher vertical range; (3) indifferent species with nearly uniform abundances in both vertical ranges; (4) species present only in one vertical range. It was found that even a single bryophyte species can show different vertical preferences depending on tree species. No significant relationships were found between the abundances of bryophytes and distance from the stream, slope of the bark surface and trunk circumference. Species-specific traits appear to explain individual phorophyte preferences; however, in several cases chemically mediated effects of the bark appeared to be important.  相似文献

Summary When 2-14-C-labelled IAA was applied to an isolated segment of Willow via a bark abrasion the pathway of transport of this compound was found to be located in the sieve elements as evidenced by the pattern of activity found in honeydew excreted by individuals of Tuberolachnus salignus (Gmelin) feeding on the segment.Further experiments have established that polarity of transport of 14C-IAA occurs in a basipetal direction when isolated segments of willow are orientated in a vertical position, with the morphological apex uppermost. No polarity was found when segments were orientated in a vertical position with the morphological base uppermost, or when the segments were orientated in a horizontal position. The metabolism of 14C-IAA was also studied with respect to orientation. It was shown that the conversion rate of IAA to IAA aspartate was influenced by the orientation of the segment. It is considered that this is not a direct effect of orientation on the rate of metabolism of IAA.  相似文献

One new kinorhynch genus and species and one new species from the genus Zelinkaderes are described from sandy sediment off Fort Pierce, Florida. The new genus and species, Tubulideres seminoli gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of the first trunk segment consisting of a closed ring, the second segment of a bent tergal plate with a midventral articulation and the following nine segments consisting of a tergal and two sternal plates. Cuspidate spines are not present, but flexible tubules are located on several segments, and in particular concentrated on the ventral side of the second segment. Middorsal spines are present on all trunk segments and are alternatingly offset to a position slightly lateral to the middorsal line. Zelinkaderes brightae nov. sp. is characterized by its spine formula in having middorsal spines on trunk segments 4, 6 and 8–11, lateroventral acicular spines on segment 2, lateral accessory cuspidate spines on segments 2 and 8, ventrolateral cuspidate spines on segments 4–6 and 9, lateroventral acicular spines present on segments 8 and 9, and midterminal, lateral terminal and lateral terminal accessory spines on segment 11. The spine formula of Z. brightae nov. sp. places it in a position in between Z. submersus and a clade consisting of Z. klepali and Z. floridensis. The new findings on Z. brightae nov. sp. have led us to propose an emended diagnosis for the genus.  相似文献

Abstract

Six bryophyte species were investigated: Plagiochila spinulosa, Hylocomium splendens, Scorpiurium circinatum, Tortula ruraliformis, Rhacomitrium aquaticum and Andreaea rothii. Of these, all except A. rothii showed clear evidence of seasonal variation in desiccation tolerance, as measured by net assimilation following 24 h remoistening.

(2) In general these species showed low desiccation tolerance in autumn (October) and winter (January) and increased tolerance in spring and summer. Hylocomium splendens was a partial exception in showing relatively high tolerance in January and little change from then until July.

(3) On the whole, the seasonal pattern of desiccation response accords well with what might be expected from conditions in the habitats of the plants. The results are briefly discussed in relation to distribution of rainfall and some microenvironmental factors, and compared with some data from the literature.  相似文献

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) are members of the Cys‐loop ligand‐gated ion channel superfamily. Muscle nAChR are heteropentamers that assemble from two α, and one each of β, γ, and δ subunits. Each subunit is composed of three domains, extracellular, transmembrane and intracellular. The transmembrane domain consists of four α‐helical segments (M1–M4). Pioneering structural information was obtained using electronmicroscopy of Torpedo nAChR. The recently solved X‐ray structure of the first eukaryotic Cys‐loop receptor, a truncated (intracellular domain missing) glutamate‐gated chloride channel α (GluClα) showed the same overall architecture. However, a significant difference with regard to the vertical alignment between the channel‐lining segment M2 and segment M3 was observed. Here, we used functional studies utilizing disulfide trapping experiments in muscle nAChR to determine the spatial orientation between M2 and M3. Our results are in agreement with the vertical alignment as obtained when using the GluClα structure as a template to homology model muscle nAChR, however, they cannot be reconciled with the current Torpedo nAChR model. The vertical M2–M3 alignments as observed in X‐ray structures of prokaryotic Gloeobacter violaceus ligand‐gated ion channel and GluClα are in agreement. Our results further confirm that this alignment in Cys‐loop receptors is conserved between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.  相似文献

Dung beetles relocate vertebrate feces under the soil surface, and this behavior has many ecological consequences. In tropical forests, for example, seeds defecated by mammals that are subsequently buried by dung beetles are less likely to suffer predation. While the effects of dung beetles on the fate of defecated seeds have been relatively well studied, their effect on seeds already buried in the soil has not. To contribute to fill this gap, we designed a study with three objectives: (a) Describe the vertical re‐distribution of soil seeds that occurs due to dung beetle activity; (b) Determine if beetle activity favors establishment of seedlings from the soil seed bank; and (c) Determine if the effect of dung beetles is stronger in sites of recurrent mammal defecation. We carried out three complementary field experiments, one with artificial seeds (plastic beads) of three sizes buried at known depths, one with two species of seeds buried at those same depths, and one with the natural soil seed bank in sites of single vs. recurrent defecation. Buried beads were moved by dung beetles along the vertical axis, both upwards (9.5%) and downwards (11.5%); smaller beads were more frequently moved downwards while the contrary occurred for larger beads. Dung beetle activity caused an increase in seedling establishment, both from experimentally buried seeds and from the natural seed bank. Defecation recurrence had no effect on seedling establishment. We conclude that dung beetle activity affects seed bank dynamics with important consequences for seedling establishment in tropical forests.Abstract in Spanish is available with online material.  相似文献

Question: What is the effect of vertical seed distribution (i.e. seeds on soil surface or buried) and the relative importance of vertical and horizontal seed distribution (i.e. seeds near established vegetation or near bare soil) for seedling emergence? Location: Patagonian arid steppe. Methods: To evaluate the effect of vertical seed distribution on seedling emergence, four sowing treatments were used in field and greenhouse experiments. Vertical vs. horizontal seed distribution and the occurrence of seedlings were analysed in the field. Effects of trampling and mechanical drilling on seedling emergence were investigated experimentally in the field. Results: In field and glasshouse experiments buried seeds showed a higher emergence and larger seedling size than seeds lying on the soil surface. The observational field study indicated that natural emergence was not associated with particular microsites or plant cover (horizontal distribution), but that most seedlings emerged from buried positions (vertical distribution). Buried seeds represented less than 10% of the sampled seed cohort but account for almost 60% of the seedlings. The trampling/drilling experiment showed that sheep trampling and mechanical drilling increased seedling emergence compared to non‐treated controls. Conclusions: The population dynamics of Bromus pictus is strongly constrained by the vertical position of seeds, which largely affects emergence, and seed horizontal distribution, which largely affects seedling survival. Our results showed that sheep trampling after seed dispersal may be a low‐input technique for increasing grass recruitment.  相似文献

The effects of auxins and cytokinin on callus formation, growth and regeneration of Gracilaria tenuistipitata Chang et Xia and G. perplexa Byrne et Zuccarello (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta) are reported. Plant growth regulators (PGR) in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 100.0 μmol of indole‐3‐acetic acid, 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D), and kinetin (K) were added to the ASP 12‐NTA solid medium (0.7% agar), and apical and intercalary segments (5 mm long) were inoculated as initial explants. K stimulated growth rates of intercalary segments of G. tenuistipitata in a linear relation, and 2,4‐D (1.0 μmol) and K (10.0 μmol) stimulated growth rates of apical and intercalary segments of G. perplexa, respectively. The simultaneous formation of apical, basal, and intermediate calluses is reported for the first time in axenic tissue cultures of red algae. With intercalary segments of G. tenuistipitata, basal callus induction rates were higher than those of apical and intermediate calluses in the majority of treatments, and auxins had stimulatory effects on the formation of all callus types. In apical segments of G. perplexa, intermediate callus formation was stimulated only by treatment with 1.0 μmol of K, while apical callus formation was stimulated by indole‐3‐acetic acid (1.0–10.0 μmol), 2,4‐D (10.0–100.0 μmol), or K (0.1 μmol). Intercalary segments of G. perplexa developed only intermediate calluses, and the majority of treatments with PGR stimulated higher rates than those presented by apical segments. Potential for regeneration (development of adventitious plantlets originated from callus cells) was higher in apical calluses than in basal and intermediate calluses developed in intercalary segments of G. tenuistipitata. Moreover, auxins and cytokinin were essential to the induction of regeneration in intermediate calluses, while specific concentrations stimulated regeneration from basal and apical calluses. Plant regeneration in G. perplexa was observed only after transferring calluses from solid to liquid medium, and the majority of treatments with PGR had stimulatory effects. Regenerating plants of G. perplexa developed tetrasporangia, and released tetraspores giving rise to adult gametophytes. Our results indicate that auxins and cytokinin have a regulatory role in the growth and morphogenesis in G. tenuistipitata and G. perplexa, and diversity of responses presented by both species is related to specific developmental systems.  相似文献
