The rhodophytes Hypnea cervicornis and Cryptonemia crenulata are abundant along the Brazilian coastline and are rich in nutrients. They may therefore be used as a source of protein in shrimp diets. The aim of the present study was to test this hypothesis. The experiment was conducted in a laboratory, where 10-day-old post-larvae aged underwent 7 days of acclimation in a 1,000 L tank. They were then kept in plastic aquariums, each containing 10 L, and 20 larvae were fed daily (10% of biomass) in four equal portions with one of four diets (five repetitions of each) for a period of 45 days. All diets contained 30% crude protein (isoprotein) and 300 kcal 100 g−1 (isocaloric), with different percentages of seaweed powder: Diet “A” 39%; Diet “B” 26%, Diet “C” 13%, and Diet “D” without seaweed (control diet). Algae were collected, rinsed, dried and ground up for the feed formulations. Weight of the animals was measured at the beginning of the experiment and at 15-day intervals to assess their growth. The physico-chemical variables of the water were measured every 2 days. Final biomass, biomass gain and specific growth rate (SGR) exhibited no significant differences between treatments (P > 0.05). Survival rate was equal under the four experimental conditions, being consistent within four decimal places 95.2% to 97.00% (P > 0.05). Diets “A” and “B”, with a greater content of algae, exhibited better feed conversion (1.79:1 and 1.82:1) than Diets “C” and “D” (2.04:1 and 2.08:1) (P < 0.05). The physical-chemical variables of the water showed no significant variation and remained within the standards necessary for the wellbeing of the animals. If sufficient biomass of beached algae can be practically and economically collected, it may be used as a component in the making of shrimp feed.  相似文献

Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) is an important plant with a long history as an ornamental and a source of medicine. A protocol is outlined for adventitious bud regeneration from leaf and cotyledon explants of Chinese hawthorn (C. pinnatifida Bge. var. major N.E.Br.). Adventitious buds were induced on both the leaves of sprouting winter buds and the leaves of in vitro plants, but the percentage of bud regeneration from leaves of in vitro plants was very low—less than 6%. On N6 medium supplemented with 31.08 μM BA and 9.67 μM NAA, the percentages of bud regeneration from leaves of sprouting winter buds of cultivars “Liaohong” and “Qiujinxing” were 31.4% and 17.6%, respectively. The regeneration abilities of three kinds of cotyledon explants, immature cotyledon, mature cotyledon, and cotyledon leaf, were compared. The percentage of bud regeneration from cotyledon leaves was higher. On MS media supplemented with 4.44 μM BA and 4.54–9.08 μM TDZ, the percentages of bud regeneration from cotyledon leaves of cultivars “Qiujinxing” and “Xiajinxing” were 27.7 ± 7.8% and 20.1 ± 4.7%, respectively, and the numbers of buds per explant were 5.9 ± 1.6 and 3.2 ± 0.7, respectively. On B5 medium supplemented with 2.22 μM BA, 2.32 μM Kn, and 0.57 μM IAA, adventitious buds grew quickly and 80–100% of buds developed into shoots. The shoots rooted successfully with the two-step rooting method. Ninety days after transplantation, more than 80% plants were survived. This system of adventitious bud regeneration from leaf and cotyledon explants could be useful for the genetic transformation and polyploidization of Chinese hawthorn.  相似文献

The marine bacterium “Pseudoalteromonas januaria” SUT 11 isolated from a seawater sample produced the rare cell-bound cyclic lipodepsipeptides A/A′, B/B′, and C/C′. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectra indicated that one bromine atom presented in the peptides B/B′ and C/C′, whereas the component A/A′ contained no bromine atom. The acyldepsipeptides A/A′–C/C′ have an identical amino acid sequence, Thr-Val-Asn-Asn-Leu/allo-Ile, but differed in C-terminal amino acid and acyl moieties. Peptides A–C have Leu as a C-terminal amino acid, whereas peptides A′-C′ have allo-Ile. Acyl moieties in peptides A/A′, B/B′, and C/C′ have been found to consist of 11-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-undeca-2,4,6,8,10-pentaenic acid, 9-(3′-bromo-4′-hydroxyphenyl)-nona-2,4,6,8-tetraenic acid, and 11-(3′-bromo-4′-hydroxyphenyl)-undeca-2,4,6,8,10-pentaenic acid, respectively. The structure of a main pair of peptides B/B′ with molecular masses 843/845 Da has been determined by means of ultraviolet, infrared, and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We have demonstrated that tandem nano-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is a very efficient way for the fast and sensitive investigation of lipopeptides A/A′ and C/C′ with molecular masses 791 and 869/871 Da, respectively, which have been isolated in small amounts.  相似文献

A new cultivation technique for Kappaphycus alvarezii was used in the Brazilian southeastern coast (23°02′25″ S and 43°53′39″ W), the tubular netting on floating rafts. The tubular net technique (TN) was compared with the current method of tie–tie (TT). After 47 days, the daily growth rate (mean ± SD of TN and TT = 3.4 ± 0.7% day−1), carrageenan yield (mean ± SD of TN and TT = 36 ± 1.3%), gel strength (mean ± SD of TN and TT = 730 ± 114.5 g cm2), and viscosity (mean ± SD of TN and TT = 350 ± 60.4 cP) did not differ between the two techniques (p > 0.05). The amount of time used to plant (TT = 30.2 ± 2.3 min and TN = 13.3 ± 3.4 min) and to harvest the seedlings (TT = 36.2 ± 2.7 min and TN = 17.8 ± 3.7 min) were lower in TN (p < 0.001). It is concluded that TN was more effective than TT, the cultivation management (time rates used to plant and harvest the seedlings) was 53.6% faster, no seedlings were lost, the cost was lower, and an estimated return in 1 year of nearly 20% more than that of the TT technique.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the Ajime-loach, Niwaella delicata, is guided to groundwater seepages by a positive thermotaxis in autumn, was tested by a field investigation and aquarium-based experiments. A total of 763 individuals of N. delicata were captured from October to November in a groundwater trap in the Yasu River, Shiga Prefecture. Niwaella delicata began to be captured as the temperature of the surface water fell to 15.8° ± 1.1°C (mean ± SD) and that of the groundwater to 15.5° ± 0.9°C. Groundwater was often warmer than surface water at night or occasionally all day, and the difference in temperature reached a maximum of 1.3°C at the night on 5 November. For the diel pattern of captures, nocturnal capture was higher than diurnal capture when the groundwater was warmer at night and colder during the daytime, whereas both diurnal and nocturnal captures were high when the groundwater was always warmer than the surface water. The aquarium-based experiments showed that N. delicata choose warmer water, ranging from 18.4° to 22.2°C, just before the capture period in the Yasu River, and are sensitive to differences in water temperature of 1.3° ± 0.1°C. Although the present results broadly support the hypothesis, a part of the results indicates that water temperature gradients may not be the only factor involved in the groundwater selection of N. delicata.  相似文献

The habitat and movements of a Pacific bluefin tuna were investigated by reanalyzing archival tag data with sea surface temperature data. During its trans-Pacific migration to the eastern Pacific, the fish took a direct path and primarily utilized waters, in the Subarctic Frontal Zone (SFZ). Mean ambient temperature during the trans-Pacific migration was 14.5 ± 2.9 (°C ± SD), which is significantly colder than the waters typically inhabited by bluefin tuna in their primary feeding grounds in the western and eastern Pacific (17.6 ± 2.1). The fish moved rapidly through the colder water, and the heat produced during swimming and the thermoconservation ability of bluefin tuna likely enabled it to migrate through the cold waters of the SFZ.  相似文献

Here, we have characterized four pH-dependent states: alkaline state, “B” (pH 9.0), native state, “N” (pH 7.4), acid-induced state, “A” (pH 2.2) and molten globule state, “MG” (pH 1.8) of Rhizopus niveus lipase (RNL) by CD, tryptophanyl fluorescence, ANS binding, DLS, and enzyme activity assay. This “MG” state lacks catalytic activity and tertiary structure but it has native-like significant secondary structure. The “R h” of all the four states of RNL obtained from DLS study suggests that the molecular compactness of the protein increases as the pH of solution decreases. Kinetic analysis of RNL shows that it has maximum catalytic efficiency at state “B” which is 15-fold higher than state “N.” The CD and tryptophanyl fluorescence studies of RNL on GuHCl and temperature-induced unfolding reveal that the “MG” state is more stable than the other states. The DSC endotherms of RNL obtained at pH 9.0, 7.4, and 2.2 were with two transitions, while at pH 1.8 it showed only a single transition.  相似文献

Recent studies on global climate change report that increase in seawater temperature leads to coastal ecosystem change, including coral bleaching in the tropic. In order to assess the effect of increased seawater temperature on a temperate coastal ecosystem, we studied the inter-annual variation in productivity of Laminaria japonica using long-term oceanographic observations for the Uwa Sea, southern Japan. The annual productivity estimates for L. japonica were 2.7 ± 2.5 (mean ± SD) kg wet wt. m−1 (length of rope) (2003/2004), 1.0 ± 0.6 kg wet wt. m−1 (2004/2005) and 12.1 ± 12.5 kg wet wt. m−1 (2005/2006). Our previous study using the same methodology at the same locality reported that the productivity was estimated for the 2001/2002 (33.3 ± 15.2 kg wet wt. m−1) and 2002/2003 (34.0 ± 8.7 kg wet wt. m−1) seasons. Productivity in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 was significantly lower than in years 2001/2002, 2002/2003 and 2005/2006. A comparison of oceanographic conditions among the 5 years revealed the presence of threshold seawater temperature effects. When the average seawater temperature during the first 45 days of each experiment exceeded 15.5°C, productivity was reduced to about 10 % of that in cooler years. Moreover the analysis of growth and erosion rates indicates that when the seawater temperature was over 17.5°C, erosion rate exceeded growth rate. Thus, an increase of seawater temperature of just 1°C during winter drastically reduces the productivity of L. japonica in the Uwa Sea.  相似文献

Presence and stability of an unusual phycoerythrin (PE) characteristically similar to R-PE are described in a terrestrial, desiccation-tolerant cyanobacterium, Lyngbya arboricola. Extraction and purification of the PE by using acetone precipitation, gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography resulted in achieving a purity index (A560/A280) of up to 5.2. SDS-PAGE of the PE showed presence of 18 kDa, 20 kDa and 32 kDa bands corresponding to α, β and γ subunits of R-PE without any other contaminating phycobiliproteins (PBPs). The absorption spectrum of the PE was distinguished by two major peaks at 499 and 559 nm. The maximum fluorescence emission at room temperature was 578 nm. Spectroscopic and electrophoresis characteristics of PE in the dry mats on storage at 25 ± 1°C over silica gel for 2 years remained almost unaffected. Quantitatively, storage stability of the PE was in the order of dry mats > lyophilized > liquid state and the impact of temperature on loss of PE was in the order of 25°C > −20°C > 4°C. The relevance of L. arboricola for production of stable unusual PE is discussed.  相似文献

Physical properties (roughness, gloss, mechanical, surface topography and adhesive) of a bioadhesive film for the transdermal delivery of drugs and its interactions with a skin model surface were studied. Roughness is a measurement of the small-scale variations in the height of a physical surface. No significant differences in Ra between the “x” and “y” dimensions for both the skin model and patch were detected, due to uniformity in their production. Scanning electron microscope pictures showed small particles projected from the film. Those particles resulted in increasing roughness and surface area. For the patch, gloss values measured at 20° were 6.0 ± 0.9 and at 60°, 32.2 ± 2.2 gloss units, respectively, indicating a semi-gloss material. Concerning the mechanical properties, the tensile strength of the film resulted four- to sevenfold greater than the peel force from the model skin used, indicating the suitability of the film for skin application. The adhesion to skin model depended on the amount of water used for film application and on the elapsed time between film application and removal. Finally, the model skin that was invented by Charkoudian can be used as an alternative to costly and highly variable human skin substrates since it possesses human topography.  相似文献

Characterization of thermal tolerances of ants, which are both abundant and important in most terrestrial ecosystems, is needed since thermal constraints can inform how a species may respond to local climatic change. Here we identified the thermal tolerances of 16 common ant species of the Northeastern United States and determined relationships between body size, desiccation, and thermal tolerance among species. We hypothesized that maximum heat tolerances of these species would differ and be related to body size and capacity to resist desiccation. We identified four distinct groups of species belonging to one of three subfamilies, Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, or Myrmicinae, with different maximum thermal tolerances. Group “a” had a mean thermal tolerance of approximately 43°C (±1°C), group “b” had a mean thermal tolerance of 40°C (±1°C), group “c” had a mean thermal tolerance of 38°C (±0°C), and group “d” had a mean thermal tolerance of 36°C (±0°C). Groups “a” and “d” consisted of a single species (in the subfamilies Myrmicinae and Formicinae, respectively), while groups “b” and “c” were a mix of species in the subfamilies Myrmicinae, Formicinae, and Dolichoderinae. In the subfamily Formicinae, thermal tolerance increased with body size and critical water content, a metric of desiccation tolerance. In contrast, in the subfamily Myrmicinae, higher thermal tolerance was correlated with intermediate body size and lower critical water content. These findings suggest that the two dominant subfamilies in Northeastern deciduous forests have different relationships between body size, capacity to tolerate desiccation, and thermal tolerances across species. This variation in thermal tolerance suggests that climatic change may impact species differently.  相似文献

The distribution of phytoplankton biomass and primary production were studied during summer 1993 at 16 stations from 65 to 72°N off West Greenland, ranging more than 900 km. Hydrography, nutrients and chlorophyll a profiles revealed a significant change in structure from south to north. Nitrate was depleted in the euphotic zone at most stations except close to the ice edge (West Ice) or close to outflow from large glaciers. The vertical distribution of phosphate followed that of nitrate, but was never depleted. Despite two stations with relatively high surface concentrations, silica showed the same distribution as the other two nutrients. In the south, chlorophyll a concentration and primary production were lower than north of Disko Bay (69°N), associated with a well-mixed versus a salinity-generated stratification, respectively. In Vaigat, a high-production station was identified, (st. 910, 69°52′69N–51°30′61W) with a chlorophyll a concentration in the euphotic zone of >13 μg l−1 and an area primary production of 3.2 g C m−2 day−1. This is seldom encountered in arctic waters and was presumably due to nutrient-rich melt-water originating from the Iluliíssat Glacier. The overall primary production for the studied area was 67–3207 mg C m−2 day−1 (mean ± SD=341± 743 mg C m−2 day−1), which is within the range of the few results published for West Greenland and eastern Canadian Arctic waters. Members of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family of proteins are frequently overactive in solid tumors. A relatively new therapeutic approach to inhibit the kinase activity is the use of ATP-competitive small molecules. In silico techniques were employed to identify the key interactions between inhibitors and their protein receptors. A series of EGFR inhibitory anilinoquinolines was studied within the framework of hologram quantitative structure activity relationship (HQSAR), density functional theory (DFT)-based QSAR, and three-dimensional (3D) QSAR (CoMFA/CoMSIA). The HQSAR analysis implied that substitutions at certain sites on the inhibitors play an important role in EGFR inhibition. DFT-based QSAR results suggested that steric and electronic interactions contributed significantly to the activity. Ligand-based 3D-QSAR and receptor-guided 3D-QSAR analyses such as CoMFA and CoMSIA techniques were carried out, and the results corroborated the previous two approaches. The 3D QSAR models indicated that steric and hydrophobic interactions are dominant, and that substitution patterns are an important factor in determining activity. Molecular docking was helpful in identifying a bioactive conformer as well as a plausible binding mode. The docked geometry-based CoMFA model with steric and electrostatic fields effect gave q 2 = 0.66, r 2 = = 0.94 with r 2 predictive = 0.72. Similarly, CoMSIA with hydrophobic field gave q 2 = 0.59, r 2 = 0.85 with r 2 predictive = 0.63. Bulky groups around site 3 of ring “C”, and hydrophilic and bulky groups at position 6 of ring “A” are desirable, with a hydrophobic and electron-donating group at site 7 of ring “A” being helpful. Accordingly, potential EGFR inhibitors may be designed by modification of known inhibitors.  相似文献

Increased production of glucocorticoids by the adrenal cortex is found in mammals under stress. As cortisol itself is absent in the faeces, an enzyme immunoassay (11-oxoaetiocholanolone) measuring 11,17-dioxoandrostanes has already been established to measure faecal cortisol metabolites in ruminants for non-invasive monitoring of adrenocortical activity. The aim of this study was to establish route and delay of excretion of glucocorticoids in hares and to determine whether a cortisol-, corticosterone- or this new enzyme immunoassay is best suited to detect faecal glucocorticoid metabolites. In the first experiment radioactive-labelled glucocorticoids (14C-cortisol and 3H-corticosterone) were administered intravenously to two groups of three hares in metabolic cages. All voided urine and faecal samples were collected for 4 days. Metabolites of both steroids were found predominantly in the urine (91 ± 4%). Peak concentrations were observed in the first urinary sample following infusion (13 ± 6 h) and in the faeces with a delay of about 1 day (23 ± 7 h). Most of the radioactivity was not extractable with diethylether, indicating that the metabolites excreted in urine and faeces are mainly conjugated or polar unconjugated ones. This was confirmed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separations of the metabolites, which also revealed marked differences concerning the metabolism of the two glucocorticoids injected. Compared with the cortisol and the corticosterone enzyme immunoassay, only the group-specific enzyme immunoassay for 11,17-dioxoandrostanes detected high quantities of immunoreactive metabolites. In a second experiment hares (n=20) were stressed by rousing them three times (5 min, 10 min and another 5 min) with a 20-min break in-between. Faecal samples were collected 2 days before until 4 days after stress and analysed using the 11-oxoaetiocholanolone enzyme immunoassay. After stress significantly (P < 0.001) increased 11,17-dioxoandrostane concentrations were found. Based on these results, measuring 11,17-dioxoandrostanes in faeces enables non-invasive monitoring of disturbances in hares and thus provides a tool for field investigations elucidating the role of stress in hare populations. To develop a microbial treatment of edible oil-contaminated wastewater, microorganisms capable of rapidly degrading edible oil were screened. The screening study yielded a yeast coculture comprising Rhodotorula pacifica strain ST3411 and Cryptococcus laurentii strain ST3412. The coculture was able to degrade efficiently even at low contents of nitrogen ([NH4–N] = 240 mg/L) and phosphorus sources ([PO4–P] = 90 mg/L). The 24-h degradation rate of 3,000 ppm mixed oils (salad oil/lard/beef tallow, 1:1 w/w) at 20°C was 39.8% ± 9.9% (means ± standard deviations of eight replicates). The highest degradation rate was observed at 20°C and pH 8. In a scaled-up experiment, the salad oil was rapidly degraded by the coculture from 671 ± 52.0 to 143 ± 96.7 ppm in 24 h, and the degradation rate was 79.4% ± 13.8% (means ± standard deviations of three replicates). In addition, a repetitive degradation was observed with the cell growth by only pH adjustment without addition of the cells.  相似文献

The final thermal preference FTP) range in parthenogenetic females of cladoceran Daphnia magna was assessed by “acute” and “chronic” methods. The first method included 4-month acclimation to different temperatures in the range of 14.2 ± 0.7 to 27.1 ± 0.3°C; the “chronic” method was characterized by long-term acclimation to +20°C. Two ranges of FTP were found for D. magna, 13.3–15.4°C and 20.2–26.2°C. The thermal preference of daphnids and the temperature of acclimation were correspondingly linearly. The range of FTP was independent of the season. The searching activity of D. magna rose in April, when the FTP range increased, and the FTP was less pronounced.  相似文献

A combination of sedimentation equilibrium and sedimentation velocity in the analytical ultracentrifuge is used to investigate the hydrodynamic integrity and increased self-association interactions of the mutant GroEL Y203W when compared to the wild-type GroEL molecule, which may be derived from increased hydrophobic exposure caused by the mutation. Sedimentation velocity has revealed that three distinct species were present throughout the concentration ranges used, corresponding to 14-mer (GroEL “super monomer”) and 28-mer (“super dimer”) subunit compositions with a small amount of 42-mer (“super trimer”), which, from the relative concentration of each species, would give an estimated weight average molecular weight of (1.0 ± 0.1) × 106 Da. Sedimentation equilibrium gave an apparent weight average molecular weight (M w,app) of (910,000 ± 5000) Da, which is in agreement with these findings. These results are in contrast to wild-type GroEL which, in excellent agreement with the previous findings of Behlke and co-workers, revealed a single species with an M w,app of (805,000 ± 5200) Da and a sedimentation coefficient s 0 20,w of (21.6 ± 0.3) S. We therefore conclude that the tryptophan mutation at the Y203 location causes a significant degree of self-association of the GroEL 14-mer assembly (with dimer and trimer present). These findings would appear to correlate well with the findings of Gibbons et al., who showed an increase in hydrophobic exposure due to this mutation. A new ion-selective liquid membrane microelectrode, based on the neutral carrier 1,1′-bis(2,3-naphtho-18-crown-6), is described that shows the dependence of EMF on the activity of divalent putrescine cations a Put, with the linear slope s Put = 26 ± 3 mV/decade (mean ± SD, N = 18), in the range 10−4–10−1 M at 25 ± 1 °C. Values of potentiometric putrescine cation selectivity coefficients of logK Pot Put j (mean ± SD, N) are obtained by the separate solution method for the ions K+ (1.0 ± 0.4, 10), Na+ (−1.2 ± 0.4, 8), Ca2+ (−2.3 ± 0.5, 10) and Mg2+ (−2.5 ± 0.5, 7). The microelectrode can be applied for the direct analysis of the activities of free divalent putrescine cations in the range 5 × 10−4 to 10−1 M in an extracellular ionic environment. Established analytical methods, e.g. high performance liquid chromatography, determine the total concentration of the derivatives of free and bound putrescine. Ethanol production by recombinant Escherichia coli strain FBR5 from dilute acid pretreated wheat straw (WS) by separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was studied. The yield of total sugars from dilute acid (0.5% H2SO4) pretreated (160 °C, 10 min) and enzymatically saccharified (pH 5.0, 45 °C, 72 h) WS (86 g/l) was 50.0 ± 1.4 g/l. The hydrolyzate contained 1,184 ± 19 mg furfural and 161 ± 1 mg hydroxymethyl furfural per liter. The recombinant E. coli FBR5 could not grow at all at pH controlled at 4.5 to 6.5 in the non-abated wheat straw hydrolyzate (WSH) at 35 °C. However, it produced 21.9 ± 0.3 g ethanol from non-abated WSH (total sugars, 44.1 ± 0.4 g/l) in 90 h including the lag time of 24 h at controlled pH 7.0 and 35 °C. The bioabatement of WS was performed by growing Coniochaeta ligniaria NRRL 30616 in the liquid portion of the pretreated WS aerobically at pH 6.5 and 30 °C for 15 h. The bacterium produced 21.6 ± 0.5 g ethanol per liter in 40 h from the bioabated enzymatically saccharified WSH (total sugars, 44.1 ± 0.4 g) at pH 6.0. It produced 24.9 ± 0.3 g ethanol in 96 h and 26.7 ± 0.0 g ethanol in 72 h per liter from bioabated WSH by batch SSF and fed-batch SSF, respectively. SSF offered a distinct advantage over SHF with respect to reducing total time required to produce ethanol from the bioabated WS. Also, fed-batch SSF performed better than the batch SSF with respect to shortening the time requirement and increase in ethanol yield.  相似文献

The effect of environmental hypercapnia on respiratory and acid-base variables was studied in white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus. Blood PCO2, PO2, pH, hemoglobin concentration, and plasma lactate, glucose, catecholamines and cortisol were measured first under normocapnia (water PCO2 < 0.5 Torr, 1 Torr = 133.32 Pa), then under hypercapnia (25–35 Torr) and a final return to normocapnia at 19 ± 0.5 °C. Acute (≤ 2h) hypercapnia significantly increased arterial PCO2 (8-fold increase), ventilation frequency (2-fold increase), plasma HCO3 (2.3-fold) and decreased arterial pH (to 7.15 ± 0.02). After 24 h, norepinephrine, epinephrine and cortisol, were significantly increased, and arterial pH reached its nadir (7.10 ± 0.03). During the 72- and 96-h-periods, arterial PCO2 (24 ± 4.4 Torr) and ventilatory frequency (105 ± 5 breaths min−1) stabilized, HCO3 reached its apparent maximum (23.6 ± 0.0 mmol−1), glucose decreased by 32%, and pH increased significantly to 7.31 + 0.03. The return to normocapnia completely restored arterial PCO2 (2.5 ± 0.14 Torr), HCO3 (7.4 ± 0.59 mmol · l−1), ventilation frequency (71 ± 7 breaths · min−1), and pH (7.75 ± 0.04). Overall, hypercapnia produced a respiratory acidosis, hyperventilation, a transient norepinephrine “spike”, and increased plasma catecholamines, cortisol, and arterial PO2. The respiratory acidosis was only partially compensated (35% pH restoration) 96 h after the onset of hypercapnia and resulted in a significantly decreased blood-O2 affinity (Bohr effect), as determined by construction of in vitro blood O2 equilibrium curves at 15 °C and 20 °C.
