The in vivo and in vitro nitrate effects on pea (Pisum sativum L.) sucrose synthase (SS) were studied. At the period of plant transition from heterotrophic to autotrophic nutrition, exogenous nitrate (14.2 mM) absorbed in the form of KNO3 and Ca(NO3)2 during 10–20 days activated SS in the roots by 22–100% as compared with plants grown on nitrogen-free medium. Such effect was observed only at plant growing under high light (natural illumination up to 25 klx) and thus their sufficient supplement with sucrose. Under low light (climate-controlled chamber, 2.5 klx), nitrate could not activate SS. In the in vitro experiments, nitrate activated SS exponentially by a dose-dependent mode with the plateau at 3–5 mM, where its activity was increased by 50%. It is supposed that there is a second constituent in SS activation by nitrate, and it carries information about plant carbohydrate status. Possible mechanisms of nitrate-induced SS activation are discussed.  相似文献

The author studied the effect of different nickel concentrations (0, 0.4, 40 and 80 μM Ni) on the nitrate reductase (NR) activity of New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa Murr.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Justyna) plants supplied with different nitrogen forms (NO3 –N, NH4 +–N, NH4NO3). A low concentration of Ni (0.4 μM) did not cause statistically significant changes of the nitrate reductase activity in lettuce plants supplied with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) or mixed (NH4NO3) nitrogen form, but in New Zealand spinach leaves the enzyme activity decreased and increased, respectively. The introduction of 0.4 μM Ni in the medium containing ammonium ions as a sole source of nitrogen resulted in significantly increased NR activity in lettuce roots, and did not cause statistically significant changes of the enzyme activity in New Zealand spinach plants. At a high nickel level (Ni 40 or 80 μM), a significant decrease in the NR activity was observed in New Zealand spinach plants treated with nitrate or mixed nitrogen form, but it was much more marked in leaves than in roots. An exception was lack of significant changes of the enzyme activity in spinach leaves when plants were treated with 40 μM Ni and supplied with mixed nitrogen form, which resulted in the stronger reduction of the enzyme activity in roots than in leaves. The statistically significant drop in the NR activity was recorded in the aboveground parts of nickel-stressed lettuce plants supplied with NO3 –N or NH4NO3. At the same time, there were no statistically significant changes recorded in lettuce roots, except for the drop of the enzyme activity in the roots of NO3 -fed plants grown in the nutrient solution containing 80 μM Ni. An addition of high nickel doses to the nutrient solution contained ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +–N) did not affect the NR activity in New Zealand spinach plants and caused a high increase of this enzyme in lettuce organs, especially in roots. It should be stressed that, independently of nickel dose in New Zealand spinach plants supplied with ammonium form, NR activity in roots was dramatically higher than that in leaves. Moreover, in New Zealand spinach plants treated with NH4 +–N the enzyme activity in roots was even higher than in those supplied with NO3 –N.  相似文献

A soybean cytosolic glutamine synthetase gene (GS15) was fused with the constitutive 35S cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) promoter in order to direct overexpression in Lotus corniculatus L. plants. Following transformation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes, eight independent Lotus transformants were obtained which synthesized additional cytosolic glutamine synthetase (GS) in the shoots. To eliminate any interference caused by the T-DNA from the Ri plasmid, three primary transformants were crossed with untransformed plants and progeny devoid of TL- and TR-DNA sequences were chosen for further analyses. These plants had a 50–80% increase in total leaf GS activity. Plants were grown under different nitrogen regimes (4 or 12 mM NH4 +) and aspects of carbon and nitrogen metabolism were examined. In roots, an increase in free amino acids and ammonium was accompanied by a decrease in soluble carbohydrates in the transgenic plants cultivated with 12 mM NH4 + in comparison to the wild type grown under the same conditions. Labelling experiments using 15NH4 + were carried out in order to monitor the influx of ammonium and its subsequent incorporation into amino acids. This experiment showed that both ammonium uptake in the roots and the subsequent translocation of amino acids to the shoots was lower in plants overexpressing GS. It was concluded that the build up of ammonium and the increase in amino acid concentration in the roots was the result of shoot protein degradation. Moreover, following three weeks of hydroponic culture early floral development was observed in the transformed plants. As all these properties are characteristic of senescent plants, these findings suggest that expression of cytosolic GS in the shoots may accelerate plant development, leading to early senescence and premature flowering when plants are grown on an ammonium-rich medium. The experiment was set up to examine the influence of different nitrogen forms: (NH4)2SO4, Ca(NO3)2 or NH4NO3 on growth response, root induced pH changes in the rhizosphere, root-borne acid phosphatase activity in strawberry plants cv. Senga Sengana. The plants grown on sandy mineral soil were fertilized with 3 forms of nitrogen, in concentrations of 46 mg N·kg−1 soil. The plants were grown in rhizoboxes with removable plexiglass lids. To ensure the root growth along the plexiglass lids, the rhizoboxes were placed at an angle of about 50° with the lid on the lower side. In case of ammonium supply, the nitrification inhibitor DIDIN was added (10 mg·kg−1 of moist soil) to prevent conversion of ammonium into nitrate. The growth response (roots and shoots) of strawberry plants were determined after 11 weeks of treatment with different N forms. The best development of the root system and shoots (root and shoot dry weight and root length) was obtained, when ammonium nitrate was supplied. It is suggested therefore, that NH4NO3 stimulates vegetative growth of strawberry plants cv. Senga Sengana. However, there were no statistical differences in a leaf and flower number of the plants grown under different forms of N-fertilization. Determination of rhizosphere pH, and acid phosphatase activity were executed using non-destructive techniques, which enabled weekly measurement of chemical changes in the rhizosphere. The results revealed that the form of nitrogen supplied had a predominant effect on chemical changes in the rhizosphere of strawberry plants. The highest pH values (average pH 6.8) were measured in the rhizosphere of individual plants supplied with Ca(NO3)2. Whereas the lowest pH values (average pH 5.8) were detected in the presence of (NH4)2SO4. The curve of rhizosphere pH measured along individual roots of the plants treated with Ca(NO3)2 represents the highest pH values whereas the curve of rhizosphere pH under (NH4)2SO4 treatment had the lowest pH values. The highest activity of acid phosphatase were observed in the rhizosphere of strawberry plants grown in the presence of (NH4)2SO4, at pH 5.8.  相似文献

Abstract Effect of ammonium on in vivo activity of nitrate reductase in roots, shoots and leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings was studied in relation to light/dark conditions and EDTA supply. Supply of 5 mM (NH4)2SO4 increased the steady state level of enzyme only in leaves and in light, while it had no effect in roots and shoots and in the dark. The substrate induction of enzyme was also little affected by 1 to 10 mM (NH4)2SO4 in roots and shoots. In the leaves the activity in the dark was either inhibited (minus EDTA) or stimulated (plus EDTA) by 5 to 10 mM (NH4)2SO4. The activity was stimulated in the light also in the presence of EDTA at higher concentrations of ammonium. When different concentrations of ammonium were supplied without any exogenous nitrate in the light, the enzyme activity increased at low concentration and was either inhibited or unaffected at higher concentrations depending upon the tissue used. Supply of EDTA with ammonium modified its effect to some extent. It is suggested that the effect of ammonium on nitrate reductase activity depends upon the tissue used and the effective concentration of the ammonium.  相似文献

Pisum arvense plants were subjected to 5 days of nitrogen deprivation. Then, in the conditions that increased or decreased the root glutamine and asparagine pools, the uptake rates of 0.5 mM NH4 + and 0.5 mM K+ were examined. The plants supplied with 1 mM glutamine or asparagine took up ammonium and potassium at rates lower than those for the control plants. The uptake rates of NH4 + and K+ were not affected by 1 mM glutamate. When the plants were pre-treated with 100 μM methionine sulphoximine, an inhibitor of glutamine synthesis, the efflux of NH4 + from roots to ambient solution was enhanced. On the other hand, exposure of plants to methionine sulphoximine led to an increase in potassium uptake rate. The addition of asparagine, glutamine or glutamate into the incubation medium caused a decline in the rate of NH4 + uptake by plasma membrane vesicles isolated from roots of Pisum arvense, whereas on addition of methionine sulphoximine increased ammonium uptake. The results indicate that both NH4 + and K+ uptake appear to be similarly affected by glutamine and asparagine status in root cells. We compared the effects of salt-stresses (SS, 1: 1 molar ratio of NaCl to Na2SO4) and alkali-stresses (AS, 1: 1 molar ratio of NaHCO3 to Na2CO3) on the growth, photosynthesis, solute accumulation, and ion balance of barley seedlings, to elucidate the mechanism of AS (high-pH) damage to plants and the physiological adaptive mechanism of plants to AS. The effects of SS on the water content, root system activity, membrane permeability, and the content of photosynthetic pigments were much less than those of AS. However, AS damaged root function, photosynthetic pigments, and the membrane system, led to the severe reductions in water content, root system activity, content of photosynthetic pigments, and net photosynthetic rate, and a sharp increase in electrolyte leakage rate. Moreover, with salinity higher than 60 mM, Na+ content increased slowly under SS and sharply under AS. This indicates that high-pH caused by AS might interfere with control of Na+ uptake in roots and increase intracellular Na+ to a toxic level, which may be the main cause of some damage emerging under higher AS. Under SS, barley accumulated organic acids, Cl, SO4 2−, and NO3 to balance the massive influx of cations, the contribution of inorganic ions to ion balance was greater than that of organic acids. However, AS might inhibit absorptions of NO3 and Cl, enhance organic acid synthesis, and SO4 2− absorption to maintain intracellular ion balance and stable pH.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen balance in Acorus calamus, a wetland species colonising littoral zones with a high trophic status, was studied under experimental conditions using water or sand culture with a defined composition of the nutrient solution. Influence of graded level of N (1.86, 7.5 and 18.6 mM) and/or forms of N (NH4+ versus NO 3) on the content of non-structural carbohydrates, free amino acids, total C, and total N was studied in Acorus rhizomes and roots to find possible connection with a reduced growth of Acorus plants under high N and NH4+–N nutrition described in our previous study [Vojtíšková et al., 2004. Hydrobiologia 518: 9–22]. High N availability and pure NH4+–N nutrition affected the C/N balance of rhizome and root systems of Acorus in a similar way. NH4+–N was the only form of N elevated under the high N treatment. The major proportion of the total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) was starch (91–93% and 51–64% in rhizomes and roots, respectively). The content of starch was significantly and and negatively affected by high N availability (P = 0.001), as well as by NH4+–N nutrition (P=0.001). Amounts of simple soluble carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) were negligible in comparison to starch in rhizomes and branched roots (up to 5% of TNC), while roots without developed lateral roots (unbranched) contained up to 33% of TNC in the form of simple soluble sugars. Moreover, high hexoses/sucrose ratio, low starch/soluble sugars ratio, high content of N, and low C/N ratio support the notion that unbranched roots are metabolically active young roots with tissue differentiation in progress. A high content of free amino acids, typically with dominance of N-rich amino acids (Arg-46%, Gln-8%, Asn-7%), was found simultaneously with a low carbohydrate content under high N supply, which indicates that NH4+ received is effectively incorporated into the organic form by this species. Since the decrease in carbohydrate content was not accompanied by luxurious growth, other possible carbon consuming processes were discussed in relation to NH4+ nutrition. More dramatic changes in total N than C were found under high N availability resulting a shift in C/N ratio in favour of N. Although the shift towards N metabolism was obvious, no serious carbohydrate depletion occurred, which could explain the reduced growth of Acorus plants under high N and sole NH4+–N nutrition described previously.  相似文献

The effects of Ca(NO3)2 stress on biomass production, oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymes activities and polyamine contents in roots of grafted and non-grafted tomato plants were investigated. Results showed that when exposed to 80 mM Ca(NO3)2 stress, the biomass production reduction in non-grafted plants was more significant than that of grafted plants. Under Ca(NO3)2 stress, superoxide anion radical (O2) producing rate, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of non-grafted plants roots were significantly higher than those of grafted plants, however, nitrate (NO3 ), ammonium (NH4 +) and proline contents, superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC1.15.1.1), peroxidase (POD, EC1.11.1.7), catalase (CAT, EC1.11.1.6) and arginine decarboxylase (ADC, EC 4.1.1.19) activities of grafted plants roots were significantly higher than those of non-grafted plants. Regardless of stress, free, conjugated and bound polyamine contents in roots of grafted plants were significantly higher than those of non-grafted plants. The possible roles of antioxidant enzymes, prolines and polyamines in adaptive mechanism of tomato roots to Ca(NO3)2 stress were discussed. Toxic Effect of Cadmium on Rice as Affected by Nitrogen Fertilizer Form   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A nutrient solution experiment was conducted to determine the influence of N forms on growth, oxidative stress, and Cd and N uptake in rice plants. The treatments were consisted of two Cd levels (0 and 1 μmol) and three N forms (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and Ca(NO3)2. The results indicated that without Cd addition in the culture solution, the N forms had no significant effect on all measured parameters, including plant growth, photosynthetic traits, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and Cd and N concentration, while Cd addition in the medium resulted in significant differences in measured parameters among the three forms of N fertilizers. The least inhibition of growth was noted in (NH4)2SO4-fed plants, and the largest in Ca(NO3)2-fed plants, when plants were exposed to Cd stress. The highest photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content was also recorded in (NH4)2SO4-fed plants. Addition of Cd caused a remarkable increase in SOD activity and MDA content in plants, and the extent of increase varied with N form, with (NH4)2SO4-fed plants being smallest. In comparison with the control plants, the N concentration in roots and shoots was not significantly affected in (NH4)2SO4-fed plants, but significant decrease in root N concentration was found for the NH4NO3 and Ca(NO3)2-fed plants under Cd stress. Moreover, the significant differences were also noted among the three N forms in both root and shoot Cd concentrations, with (NH4)2SO4-fed plants being the lowest. The results indicated that the toxic effect of Cd on rice varied with the form of N fertilizer.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) limits plant productivity and its uptake and assimilation may be regulated by N source, N availability, and nitrate reductase activity (NRA). Knowledge of how these factors interact to affect N uptake and assimilation processes in woody angiosperms is limited. We fertilized 1-year-old, half-sib black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) seedlings with ammonium (NH4 +) [as (NH4)2SO4], nitrate (NO3 ) (as NaNO3), or a mixed N source (NH4NO3) at 0, 800, or 1,600 mg N plant−1 season−1. Two months following final fertilization, growth, in vivo NRA, plant N status, and xylem exudate N composition were assessed. Specific leaf NRA was higher in NO3 -fed and NH4NO3-fed plants compared to observed responses in NH4 +-fed seedlings. Regardless of N source, N addition increased the proportion of amino acids (AA) in xylem exudate, inferring greater NRA in roots, which suggests higher energy cost to plants. Root total NRA was 37% higher in NO3 -fed than in NH4 +-fed plants. Exogenous NO3 was assimilated in roots or stored, so no difference was observed in NO3 levels transported in xylem. Black walnut seedling growth and physiology were generally favored by the mixed N source over NO3 or NH4 + alone, suggesting NH4NO3 is required to maximize productivity in black walnut. Our findings indicate that black walnut seedling responses to N source and level contrast markedly with results noted for woody gymnosperms or herbaceous angiosperms.  相似文献

In a pot trial growth and transpiration of 3-year-old Douglas-fir seedlings on an acid, sandy soil was examined at a deficient (30 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) and an excessive level (120 kg N ha –  1 year –  1) of NH4 application. Dissolved ammonium sulphate was applied to the pots weekly for two growing seasons. In half of the pots a complete set of other nutrients was applied in optimal proportions to the applied nitrogen. Water supply was optimal and transpiration was recorded. At the end of the second treatment season irrigation was stopped for 2 weeks during dry and sunny weather. Both high application of NH4 and additional nutrients increased shoot growth and transpiration demand in the first treatment year. The root system was smaller at higher N level and this reduced water uptake accordingly. In the second year the combination of high NH4 + and additional nutrients affected root functioning predominantly due to salinity effects and this seriously decreased water uptake capacity and shoot water potentials, finally resulting in tree death. Without addition of other nutrients the high NH4 + application resulted in a high degree of soil acidification, which damaged the roots, that showed a decrease in water uptake capacity. At the low NH4 supply level soil acidification was lower, and root functioning was not affected, and the trees recovered quickly from the imposed drought. Higher needle K and P status depressed transpiration rates at the low NH4 application rate. Received: 9 January 1995 / Accepted: 18 September 1995  相似文献

Salt‐enhanced cultivation as a morphology engineering tool for the filamentous actinomycete Actinomadura namibiensis was evaluated in 500‐mL shaking flasks (working volume 100 mL) with the aim of increasing the concentration of the pharmaceutically interesting peptide labyrinthopeptin A1. Among the inorganic salts added to a complex production medium, the addition of (NH4)2SO4 led to the highest amount of labyrinthopeptin A1 production. By using 50 mM (NH4)2SO4, the labyrinthopeptin A1 concentration increased up to sevenfold compared to the non‐supplemented control, resulting in 325 mg L?1 labyrinthopeptin A1 after 10 days of cultivation. The performance of other ammonium‐ and sulfate‐containing salts (e.g., NH4Cl, K2SO4) was much lower than the performance of (NH4)2SO4. A positive correlation between the uptake of glycerol as one of the main carbon sources and nongrowth‐associated labyrinthopeptin productivity was found. The change in the cell morphology of A. namibiensis in conjunction with increased osmolality by the addition of 50 mM (NH4)2SO4, was quantified by image analysis. A. namibiensis always developed a heterogeneous morphology with pellets and loose mycelia present simultaneously. In contrast to the non‐supplemented control, the morphology of (NH4)2SO4‐supplemented cultures was characterized by smaller and circular pellets that were more stable against disintegration in the stationary production phase.  相似文献

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L., cultivar Genovese) plants were grown in Hoagland solution with or without 50 mM NaCl or 25 mM Na2SO4. After 15 days of treatment, Na2SO4 slowed growth of plants as indicated by root, stem and leaf dry weight, root length, shoot height and leaf area, and the effects were major of those induced by NaCl. Photosynthetic response was decreased more by chloride salinity than by sulphate. No effects in both treatments on leaf chlorophyll content, maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry (F v/F m) and electron transport rate (ETR) were recorded. Therefore, an excess of energy following the limitation to CO2 photoassimilation and a down regulation of PSII photochemistry was monitored under NaCl, which displays mechanisms that play a role in avoiding PSII photodamage able to dissipate this excess energy. Ionic composition (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) was affected to the same extent under both types of salinity, thus together with an increase in leaves Cl, and roots SO4 2− in NaCl and Na2SO4-treated plants, respectively, may have resulted in the observed growth retardation (for Na2SO4 treatment) and photosynthesis activity inhibition (for NaCl treatment), suggesting that those effects seem to have been due to the anionic component of the salts.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to investigate the phytotoxicity of nitrapyrin 2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine to sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under different N regimes and to see if N forms affect the phytotoxicity of nitrapyrin. Sunflower was grown in pot culture for 21 days and was fertilized with (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and NaNO3 to provide 0, 100 and 200 ppm N and with nitrapyrin application of 0 and 20 ppm. All N-treated sunflower plants in all N regimes and regardless of titrapyrin treatment produced more root and shoot dry weights and contained a significantly higher N than untreated check. Nitrapyrin toxicity appeared as a curling of leaf margin and a tendril type of stem growth, the visible toxicity symptoms decreased in the order: (NH4)2SO4>NH4NO3>NaNO3. Furthermore nitrapyrin addition suppressed sunflower growth in each N regime, the suppressing effect being greater with (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 than as with NaNO3. Although, shoot growth from plants receiving nitrapyrin was not significantly affected by any N regime, root growth of nitrapyrin-treated plants was somewhat restricted by NH4 +−N nutrition relative to NO3 −N nutrition.  相似文献

Seedlings of mangrove plant Bruguiera gymnorrhiza cultured in sand with Hoagland’s nutrient solution were treated with 1 to 30 mM Cd(NO3)2 or Pb(NO3)2 for 2 months. In all Cd/Pb treatments, the malondialdehyde content increased while the chlorophyll content declined. Peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in roots increased at moderate Cd/Pb concentrations (1–10 mM), whereas decreased at higher concentrations (20–30 mM). Catalase (CAT) activity in roots was inhibited by 1–10 mM Cd but enhanced by 1–10 mM Pb. The activities of POD, SOD and CAT in leaves were less affected by Cd and Pb than in roots. A new SOD and three CAT isoenzymes were induced by Pb. In contrast, no additional SOD and CAT isoenzymes were induced by Cd.  相似文献

Mature-embryo derived primary calli of the basmati rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv Karnal Local showed significant enhancement in in vitro green-plantlet regeneration efficiency through modification of nitrogen content of the callusing medium. Using KNO3 as the source of nitrate nitrogen and (NH4)2SO4 as the source of ammonium nitrogen, forty-five media combinations involving 9 levels of KNO3 (0–40 mM) and 5 concentrations (0–6.5 mM) of (NH4)2SO4 were examined. The highest frequency of plantlet regeneration (100%) and a maximum number of green-plantlets (~ 7) per embryo-derived primary callus was obtained in calli derived from the medium having 35 mM KNO3 and 5 mM (NH4)2SO4. Higher concentrations of KNO3 and/or (NH4)2SO4 showed a decline in the regeneration efficiency. It was also observed that although the nitrogen content of the callus induction medium had a profound effect on the regenerability of the callus, the nitrogen composition of the regeneration medium also affected it significantly.  相似文献

Conditions for assay of molybdenum cofactor in barley shoot extracts in the presence of molybdate (25 mM N2MoO4) and the sulphydryl-group protector, reduced glutathione (5 mM) were optimized. Both total Mo-cofactor (assayed after heat-treatment of cell-free extracts) and ‘free’ Mo-cofactor (assayed in untreated cell-free extracts) were assayed. Compared to control plants grown in the absence of an exogenous nitrogen source total Mo-cofactor levels increased around 70 % when plants were grown for 4 days in the presence of either 15 mM KNO3 or 15 mM NH4NO3. Growth in the presence of 15 mM (NH4)2SO4 did not affect the Mo-cofactor level. Very similar results were seen when plants were transferred to these nitrogen sources for 24 hr after previous growth in the absence of an exogenous nitrogen source. In contrast ‘free’ Mo-cofactor levels of both KNO3 and NH4NO3-treated plants were increased 2-3-fold over untreated controls. Growth in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 did not affect the ‘free’ Mo-cofactor level.  相似文献

Triticum aestivum L. (cv. Gutha), a short-season wheat, was grown to maturity in large monoliths of duplex soil (sand over sandy-clay) in a daylight phytotron mimicking field conditions. Either 15N-labelled ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4) or urea was banded into the soil at a rate of 30 kg N ha–1: even though roots were about 20% heavier when grown in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 for 86 d (P<0.05), above-ground mass was not affected by the source of nitrogen. At four times through crop development up to grain-filling (50, 56, 70 and 86 d after sowing) shoots were labelled heavily with 14CO2 with two purposes. First, to trace `instantaneous' assimilate movement over 24 h, revealing relative sink strengths throughout plants. This, in turn, allowed precise measurements of live root mass and the proportion of recent photoassimilates deposited in the rhizosphere. Although root systems were sparse, even in surface soil layers, they were strong sinks for photoassimilates early in development (0–50 d), supporting the conversion of inorganic applied nitrogen (N) to soil organic forms. In the presence of roots, up to 28% of 15N was immobilised, whereas only 12% of labelled ammonium sulphate was immobilised in unplanted plots in spite of a favourable moisture status in both treatments. The effect of plants on rates of 15N transformation is ascribed to recently imported photoassimilates sustaining rhizosphere metabolism. Not more than 15% of recently fixed carbon imported by roots was recovered from the rhizoplane, suggesting that a highly localised microbial biomass supported vigorous immobilisation of soil N. Thus, more than twice as much applied N was destined for soil organic fractions as for root material. By these processes, root- and soil-immobilised N become substantial stores of applied N and together with shoot N accounted for all the applied N under dryland conditions.  相似文献

Summary A wide range of clover accessions were screened for reaction to manganese (Mn) in solution culture. Growth was supported with ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) or symbiotic nitrogen to assess Mn effects on symbiosis and the suitability of NH4NO3 dependent growth for assessing Mn tolerance in clover. Reduction of dry matter at Mn 45 ppm varied 0–70%, at Mn 90 ppm, 38–92%, the extent depending on genotype. Tolerant clovers tended to restrict the movement of Mn from roots to shoots. Several previously untested lines were the most tolerant while some commercial lines possessed poor tolerance. Ranks of tolerance for the two nitrogen (N) sources at Mn 45 ppm were correlated suggesting no dominant, discriminatory effects of N source on Mn tolerance; but inclusion of symbiotic effectiveness in a multiple correlation improved the relation between relative tolerances of genotypes under different N sources. Mn affected some aspects of symbiosis. Total nodule nitrogenase activity mainly reflected effects of Mn on nodule number but nitrogenase activity per nodule also contributed. To establish relative tolerances of subterranean clover to Mn growth with NH4NO3 is suitable and useful when symbiotic effectiveness is unknown.  相似文献
