Eutrophication, often resulting from human activity, is a serious threat to aquatic communities. Theoretical analysis of this phenomenon, based on conceptual mathematical models, leads to controversial predictions known as Rosenzweig's paradox of enrichment. At the same time, field observations demonstrate that real plankton communities exhibit various mechanisms of self-regulation which can buffer negative effects of enrichment. In this paper, we study potential effects of zooplankton vertical migration on stability of plankton systems functioning. We consider an intrinsically unstable plankton model, which is characterized by an unlimited phytoplankton multiplication and population oscillations of increasing amplitude, and investigate whether vertical migrations of zooplankton can stabilize such a system at low plankton densities. By means of developing two different models accounting for different ecological situations, e.g. deep waters and shallow waters, we show that vertical migrations of zooplankton can result in stabilization of eutrophic plankton systems. Thus, we show that this mechanism, rarely taken into account in models of plankton dynamics, may be important for resolving the paradox of enrichment in plankton communities.  相似文献

Short-term species succession, and long-term community development, of planktonic rotifer populations of the temperate zone and factors influencing species' abundance (ie., physical and chemical limitations, food and exploitative competition, mechanical interference competition, predation, parasitism) are described and discussed. The long-term development of plankton communities in three European lakes is described and the major events are discussed in relation to ecological interactions. Frequently, the shortcomings of our knowledge about population ecology and ecophysiology of rotifers prevent explanations of short-term and, especially, of long-term developments of these plankton organisms. The need for qualitative and quantitative observations in the field and in the laboratory over long periods becomes obvious.  相似文献

Practical difficulties in the application of correct statistical methods in field ecology are illustrated by a plankton abundancy estimation in a small pond. Random sampling was performed over a limited number of previously chosen sample places and times. A cylindric sampler was used, which caught the plankton within a whole water column (1 m). Relatively high numbers of samples were needed to achieve reliable estimates of population parameters, which was demonstrated by simultaneous sampling. The probability distribution of the number of daphnids per sample was shown to be approximately lognormal. However, the variances of the log-transformed data were not uniformly homogeneous, which reduces the applicability of familiar tests for parameter comparison. Arguments are presented to make comparisons of population abundancies through transformed data only.  相似文献

Abstract. A mathematical model based on the hypothesis of polar transport is presented for pattern formation and regeneration in planarian worms. The planarian body pattern is determined by two perpendicularly oriented morphogen distributions, one of which is bilaterally symmetrical. The mathematically simulated regeneration responses of this model are in good agreement with experimental observations. Further experimental work is needed to test the polar transport hypothesis.  相似文献

We explore the mutual dependencies and interactions among different groups of species of the plankton population, based on an analysis of the long-term field observations carried out by our group in the North–West coast of the Bay of Bengal. The plankton community is structured into three groups of species, namely, non-toxic phytoplankton (NTP), toxic phytoplankton (TPP) and zooplankton. To find the pair-wise dependencies among the three groups of plankton, Pearson and partial correlation coefficients are calculated. To explore the simultaneous interaction among all the three groups, a time series analysis is performed. Following an Expectation Maximization (E-M) algorithm, those data points which are missing due to irregularities in sampling are estimated, and with the completed data set a Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) model is analyzed. The overall analysis demonstrates that toxin-producing phytoplankton play two distinct roles: the inhibition on consumption of toxic substances reduces the abundance of zooplankton, and the toxic materials released by TPP significantly compensate for the competitive disadvantages among phytoplankton species. Our study suggests that the presence of TPP might be a possible cause for the generation of a complex interaction among the large number of phytoplankton and zooplankton species that might be responsible for the prolonged coexistence of the plankton species in a fluctuating biomass.  相似文献

The current state of assessment of nuclear and thermal power plant toxic effects on zooplankton entrained in the water supply hardware is reviewed. Common research approaches and their inherent problems are considered and particular emphasis is given to specific features of cooling reservoirs and their ecosystems. Complex analysis of zooplankton mortality in various conditions and areas of a cooling reservoir is presented. Our data from field and laboratory studies allow major factors resulting in damage to and mortality of zooplankton to be determined and suggest that, among all plankton species in the cooling reservoir, zooplankton is the most sensitive group to entrainment-induced stress. Our results clearly demonstrate that both field observations and laboratory studies are required to reliably estimate power plant impact on zooplankton and to predict mortality of organisms.  相似文献

Changes in marine plankton communities driven by environmental variability impact the marine food web and global biogeochemical cycles of carbon and other elements. To predict and assess these community shifts and their consequences, ecologists are increasingly investigating how the functional traits of plankton determine their relative fitness along environmental and biological gradients. Laboratory, field and modelling studies are adopting this trait‐based approach to map the biogeography of plankton traits that underlies variations in plankton communities. Here, we review progress towards understanding the regulatory roles of several key plankton functional traits, including cell size, N2‐fixation and mixotrophy among phytoplankton, and body size, ontogeny and feeding behaviour for zooplankton. The trait biogeographical approach sheds light on what structures plankton communities in the current ocean, as well as under climate change scenarios, and also allows for finer resolution of community function because community trait composition determines the rates of significant processes, including carbon export. Although understanding of trait biogeography is growing, uncertainties remain that stem, in part, from the paucity of observations describing plankton functional traits. Thus, in addition to recommending widespread adoption of the trait‐based approach, we advocate for enhanced collection, standardisation and dissemination of plankton functional trait data.  相似文献

通过对近十几年来河口最大浑浊带浮游植物生态动力过程研究的报道进行综述,阐明该方面研究的最新进展。研究结果表明,河口最大浑浊带的湍流混合过程增大了浮游植物细胞光合作用的机会;重力环流致使浮游植物及其光合作用所需的物质有较长时间的停留;再悬浮过程使微型底栖藻类对最大浑浊带水体中叶绿素产生明显贡献;锋面强烈的辐合聚集作用则可使浮游植物在锋面附近出现高值现象。最后对河口最大浑浊带浮游植物生态动力过程的继续研究提出了几点看法。  相似文献

Electroporation is believed to involve a temporary structural rearrangement of lipid bilayer membranes, which results in ion and molecular transport across the membrane. The results of a quantitative study of molecular transport due to electroporation caused by a single exponential pulse are presented; transport of four molecules of different physical characteristics across erythrocyte ghost membranes is examined as a function of applied field strength. Flow cytometry is used to quantitatively measure the number of molecules transported for 10(4) to 10(5) individual ghosts for each condition. This study has four major findings: 1) Net transport first increases with field strength, but reaches a plateau at higher field strengths. Significant transport is found at or below 1 kV/cm, and transport plateaus begin at field strengths between 2 and 5 kV/cm depending on the molecule transported. 2) A single population of ghosts generally exists, but exhibits a wide distribution in the amount of molecular transport. 3) Under the conditions used, the direction of transport across the ghost membrane does not appear to affect molecular transport significantly. 4) Large numbers of ghosts may be destroyed by the electroporation procedure.  相似文献

This report summarizes the results of summer studies of five soft water lakes, five hard water lakes and six calcareous spring ponds in Wisconsin with respect to the composition of the plankton and aufwuchs communities and the relative role of desmids in those communities. The results are compared with similar data obtained from selected acid bog lakes, alkaline bog lakes and closed bogs. Soft water lakes harbored a greater aufwuchs and plankton desmid diversity than hard water lakes or spring ponds; however, diversity in acid bog lakes was substantially greater than in any other lake type. Utricularia contained the greatest desmid diversity and population density in every lake where it occurred. Staurastrum was the most prevalent genus in the plankton and it was the only one recorded from hard water lakes and calcareous spring ponds. Desmid aufwuchs population densities were roughly comparable in hard water lakes, soft water lakes and acid bogs and the contribution of desmids to the total aufwuchs population was similar for the latter two lake types. However, the plankton of acid bog lakes generally harbored substantially greater desmid populations and these populations contributed much more to the total population than in any other lake type. Aufwuchs data are presented for several hosts and comparisons of population densities are given among hosts within a given lake and between the same host in different lakes of a given type. A simulation framework for drug-eluting stents (DES) is presented that simulates the two distinct operational phases of a DES: stent deployment is simulated first, a mechanical porohyperelastic/elasto-plastic/contact analysis. This analysis calculates the interstitial fluid velocity as the result of interstitial fluid pressure gradients and mechanical deformations of the vessel wall. The deformed geometry, interstitial fluid velocity field and porosity field are extracted and used as input for the drug release simulation: a reaction-advection-diffusion (RAD) transport analysis calculating the spatial and temporal drug distribution. The advantage of this approach is that the deformed geometry and interstitial fluid velocity field are not assumed a priori, but are actually calculated using a stent deployment simulation. The framework is demonstrated simulating a DES in an idealised, 3D vessel. Varying mechanical and transport properties based on literature data are assigned to each of the three layers in the wall. The results of the drug release simulation for a period of one week show that the drug distributes longitudinally but will remain in the proximity of the stented area.  相似文献

Data are presented for 28 acid bogs, five alkaline bogs, and 12 closed bogs in Wisconsin with respect to the summer composition of the aufwuchs and plankton ccommunities, the relative importance of desmids in these communities, and the structure of aufwuchs communities associated with different macrophyte hosts. Generic diversity of desmids is highest in acid bogs and lowest in alkaline bogs and generally is greater in the aufwuchs community than in the plankton community at a given site. Whenever it was present, the greatest diversity occurred in association with the macrophyte host Utricularia. Among lakes of a given type, relationships between the occurrence of desmid genera and parameters of the chemical environment were not apparent for either the aufwuchs or plankton communities. Similarly, no clear-cut distinctions occur in the desmid communities of the three lake types in terms of population densities and percentage contribution to the total population, but acid bogs tend to have a somewhat more prominent flora quantitatively. Statistically significant differences in desmid population densities from one host to another within a given lake did occur in lakes of all three types, and this suggests that the nature of the substrate can definitely influence community size and composition. Data for other algal groups are similarly treated, and brief comparisons of the mat and open water communities of alkaline bogs are included.  相似文献

It is widely believed that consumer control is a weak regulator of marine phytoplankton communities. It remains unclear, however, why this should be the case when marine consumers routinely regulate their prey at higher trophic levels. One possibility is that the weak consumer control of phytoplankton communities results from the inability of field researchers to effectively account for consumer–prey trophic relationships operating at the scale of the plankton. We explored this issue by reviewing studies of trophic control in marine plankton. Experimental studies indicate that size is a critical determinant of feeding relationships among plankton. In sharp contrast, of the 51 field studies reviewed, 78% did not distinguish among the sizes or species of phytoplankton and their consumers, but instead assumed a general bulk phytoplankton–zooplankton trophic connection. Such an approach neglects the possibility that several trophic connections may separate the smallest phytoplankton (0.2 μm) from the larger zooplankton (~ 1000 μm), a remarkable size differential exceeding that between a mouse (~10 cm) and an elephant (~2500 cm). The size‐based approach we propose integrates theory, experiments and field observations and has the potential to greatly enhance our understanding of the causes and consequences of recently documented restructuring of plankton communities.  相似文献

Coexistence of competitive species is severely limited by the availability of resources and the characteristics of the environment. In particular, the so-called 'competitive exclusion principle' states that, at equilibrium, the number of coexisting species cannot be larger than the number of resources for which they compete. However, many in situ observations have revealed prolonged coexistence of a large number of competitive plankton species, a phenomenon known as 'the paradox of the plankton'. Here we investigate this problem and show that ocean mesoscale vortices generate transport barriers and incomplete horizontal mixing, allowing for a prolonged survival of the less-fit species, even for fully homogeneous resource distributions. In such a situation, the temporarily less-fit plankton species are protected from competition by the action of the vortices.  相似文献

Despite numerous technology advances, bioreactors are still mostly utilized as functional black-boxes where trial and error eventually leads to the desirable cellular outcome. Investigators have applied various computational approaches to understand the impact the internal dynamics of such devices has on overall cell growth, but such models cannot provide a comprehensive perspective regarding the system dynamics, due to limitations inherent to the underlying approaches. In this study, a novel multi-paradigm modeling platform capable of simulating the dynamic bidirectional relationship between cells and their microenvironment is presented. Designing the modeling platform entailed combining and coupling fully an agent-based modeling platform with a transport phenomena computational modeling framework. To demonstrate capability, the platform was used to study the impact of bioreactor parameters on the overall cell population behavior and vice versa. In order to achieve this, virtual bioreactors were constructed and seeded. The virtual cells, guided by a set of rules involving the simulated mass transport inside the bioreactor, as well as cell-related probabilistic parameters, were capable of displaying an array of behaviors such as proliferation, migration, chemotaxis and apoptosis. In this way the platform was shown to capture not only the impact of bioreactor transport processes on cellular behavior but also the influence that cellular activity wields on that very same local mass transport, thereby influencing overall cell growth. The platform was validated by simulating cellular chemotaxis in a virtual direct visualization chamber and comparing the simulation with its experimental analogue. The results presented in this paper are in agreement with published models of similar flavor. The modeling platform can be used as a concept selection tool to optimize bioreactor design specifications.  相似文献

Desertification threatens 70% of all dry lands worldwide by diminishing the provision of economic and ecosystem services. However, since long‐term vegetation dynamics of semiarid ecosystems are difficult to study, the opportunities to evaluate desertification and degradation properly are limited. In this study, we tailored, calibrated and tested a spatially‐explicit simulation model (DINVEG) to describe the long‐term dynamics of dominant grass and shrub species in the semiarid Patagonian steppe. We used inverse techniques to identify parameterizations that yield model outputs in agreement with detailed field data, and we performed sensitivity analyses to reveal the main drivers of long‐term vegetation dynamics. Whereas many parameterizations (10–45%) matched single field observations (e.g. grass and shrub cover, species‐specific density, aboveground net primary production [ANPP]), only a few parameterizations (0.05%) yielded simultaneous match of all field observations. Sensitivity analysis pointed to demographic constraints for shrubs and grasses in the emergence and recruitment phase, respectively, which contributed to balanced shrub‐grass abundances in the long run. Vegetation dynamics of simulations that matched all field observations were characterized by a stochastic equilibrium. The soil water content in the top layer (0–10 cm) during the emergence period was the strongest predictor of shrub densities and population growth rates and of growth rates of grasses. Grasses controlled the shrub demography because of the resource overlap of grasses with juvenile shrubs (i.e. water content in the top layer). In agreement with field observations, ecosystem function buffered the strong variability in precipitation (a simulated CV in ANPP of 16% vs CV in precipitation of 33%). Our results show that seedling emergence and recruitment are critical processes for long‐term vegetation dynamics in this steppe. The methods presented here could be widely applied when data for direct parameterization of individual‐based models are lacking, but data corresponding to model outputs are available. Our modeling methodology can reduce the need for long‐term data sets when answering questions regarding community dynamics.  相似文献

Many animal species show individual foraging specialisms when potential prey requires prey-specific foraging strategies. Arctic charr are often found as benthic (macroinvertebrate) or pelagic (plankton) foraging specialists. Here, we tested specifically if given a choice of prey with different characteristics individuals would specialise in a single prey type and if individuals would chose prey based on their expressed trophic morphology, in a laboratory experiment and in a field observation. When offered a choice of benthic and pelagic prey most individuals (73%) showed that 100% fidelity to a single foraging source. Naïve individuals (not previously exposed to natural prey) with more robust head and mouth shape were more likely to forage on a benthic prey source (chironomids). In contrast, individuals with a more fusiform body, larger eye, but more slender head shape were more likely to specialise on pelagic prey (Artemia). Field observations of a natural population of Arctic charr from Loch Doine identified specialists foraging on either plankton or macrobenthos (on the basis of stomach contents) and some generalists. Morphological analysis showed that significant differences in shape reflecting recent foraging history. These results support the hypothesis that the availability of discrete, different prey types results in discrete foraging specialisms which in turn may result in the expression of discrete alternative phenotypes through subsequent plastic ontogenetic process. We conclude that this provides a partial explanation for why ecologically driven evolution processes are particularly prevalent in fishes from post-glacial lake systems.  相似文献

Evaluation of the fluid flow pattern in a non-pregnant uterus is important for understanding embryo transport in the uterus. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube and the embryo (fertilized ovum) enters the uterine cavity within 3 days of ovulation. In the uterus, the embryo is conveyed by the uterine fluid for another 3 to 4 days to a successful implantation site at the upper part of the uterus. Fluid movements within the uterus may be induced by several mechanisms, but they seem to be dominated by myometrial contractions. Intra-uterine fluid transport in a sagittal cross-section of the uterus was simulated by a model of wall-induced fluid motion within a two-dimensional channel. The time-dependent fluid pattern was studied by employing the lubrication theory. A comprehensive analysis of peristaltic transport resulting from symmetric and asymmetric contractions is presented for various displacement waves on the channel walls. The results provide information on the flow field and possible trajectories by which an embryo may be transported before implantation at the uterine wall.  相似文献

本文将数字全息与显微成像技术相结合,设计搭建了一套数字全息显微系统,用于对浮游生物进行光场获取。基于该系统获取的光场信息,通过在不同景深对图像进行再现,既可以获到单一浮游生物的清晰图像,也可以获得一定水体内浮游生物微粒在海水中的三维分布情况。通过实验测得系统分辨率可以达到7.8微米,景深可以达到10毫米,优于一般光学显微镜的技术指标。研究结果表明优势明显的数字全息显微系统是一种适合海洋原位探测的浮游生物研究的有效方法。基于数字同轴显微系统的水下仪器开发将是下一步工作的努力方向。  相似文献
