Rapid cycling Brassica rapa (RCBr) develops rapidly, and has both small adult size and a brief life cycle. Yet, in spite of many investigations using RCBr, extremely few plant ecologists have used this plant in the field. This study is the first to describe the genotype specific variation in traits describing survival, growth, and reproduction for field grown, RCBr. I also identify traits associated with fitness. Five genotypes of RCBr were used: standard, anthocyaninless, yellow-green, anthocyaninless and hairless, and anthocyaninless and yellow-green. Plants were grown outside in a “common garden”. Eight plant traits were measured: life span, height, growth rate, leaf size, number of flowers and fruits, fruit set, and fitness. All traits, except life span, differed significantly among the five plant genotypes. Correlation analysis revealed that fitness increased as each of these of seven plant traits increased. This study demonstrates that RCBr can serve as a model organism in ecological field studies.  相似文献

Abstract Plasticity of size and architectural traits, and their importance to reproductive fitness, were estimated in relation to nutrient availability in the annual Amaranthus albus . Seeds from seven field-collected genotypes were used to rear a first generation under uniform conditions. Seed families (inbred lines) from four first-generation plants per genotype were used to rear a second generation in a glasshouse for 10 weeks. Nine plants per family were regularly fertilized, while nine others were unfertilized. Size was estimated at 5, 8, and 10 weeks; architectural traits were recorded at 8 weeks (no. branches) and 10 weeks (no. branches and branch length). Fitness was assessed by the number of seeds per plant. Because traits were intercorrelated, size-scaled architectural traits were generated and allometric analyses performed. Genetic variation was analyzed for the second generation among inbred lines of the original genotypes, and among families within each genotype. For fertilized and unfertilized groups, early size (volume occupied at 5 weeks) and branch length per mass were significant determinants of fitness. The number of branches per size explained a smaller proportion of the variance in fitness. Genotype by treatment interaction was apparent for some traits, indicating genetic variation for plasticity, but plasticity of size did not change over ontogeny. Significant effects of genotype on size and architectural traits, and fitness, were detected mostly in the unfertilized group. Thus, selection is most likely to differentiate among genotypes in nutrient-poor environments. Lengthening of multiple branches increases seed output throughout the season, and genotypes with longer branches per unit mass have a selective advantage. Because early size is correlated with seed output, ontogenetic plasticity in response to improved soil resources allows opportunistic increases in fitness.  相似文献

Fitness‐related traits are often affected by temperature. Heat‐resistant genotypes could influence the dependence of fitness traits on temperature, which should be important in adaptation to directional changes in temperature including global warming. Here, we tested temperature‐dependent variation in longevity and fecundity between Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) genotypes that differ in heat‐resistance QTL. Longevity and fecundity were affected by heat‐resistance genotypes at constant moderate and high temperature. However, these differences between heat‐resistant and heat‐sensitive genotypes disappeared in a cyclic thermal regime. Analysis with the logistic mortality function indicated that mortality patterns are dependent on temperature and genotype. The results suggest that genotype*temperature interactions are substantial for senescence‐related traits. In particular, fluctuating temperatures can drastically reduce any differences in life‐history traits between heat‐resistance genotypes, even if such genotypes differentially affect the traits at constant temperatures.  相似文献

In an analysis of a life table experiment involving positively, intermediately and negatively phototactic Daphnia magna clones, life history traits such as the average duration of the adult instar, neonate and adult body size were found to be correlated with phototactic behaviour. The size of the eggs and neonates was positively correlated with adult body size, and with egg development time. Adult body size was positively correlated with the size of the second and subsequent clutches. I argue that the intrinsic positive correlation between offspring size and egg development time is a key factor structuring the differences in life history patterns observed between the positively and intermediately phototactic Daphnia genotypes, and that the two life history patterns are to be considered alternatives suited for different environmental conditions (e.g. habitats with and without strong predation pressure on adults).  相似文献

Theory posits that reproduction carries a cost in terms either of future fecundity, growth or survival. Different life history strategies may evolve in response to different external sources of mortality. In ectothermic organisms, such as insects and reptiles, reproductive characteristics may also vary due to effects of differences in body temperature on activity and physiological performance. In this study, female pygmy grasshoppers [Tetrix subulata (L.) Orthoptera: Tetrigidae] belonging to four different colour morphs were maintained under two different temperatures, and data on reproductive life history traits were used to test for costs of reproduction, plasticity of reproductive characteristics in response to temperature and variation among colour morphs in reproductive strategies. The results revealed that average clutch size decreased progressively from the first to third clutch, and that females producing relatively large clutches displayed a greater reduction (in both absolute and relative terms) in the number of eggs to the following clutch, as expected from the hypothesis that present reproduction negatively affects future fecundity. Great expenditure on present reproduction also negatively influenced the time to next clutch:the decrease in mean clutch size with clutch number was associated with a reduction in inter-clutch interval, and clutch interval increased with clutch size across individuals within colour morphs. Females maintained in a warm environment were more likely to oviposit, laid their first clutch earlier, produced more clutches and had shorter intervals between sequential clutchesthan females in a cold environment, suggesting that differences in body temperature may contribute to variation in reproductive performance within and among natural populations. A comparison among colour morphs maintained under identical conditions suggested that females belonging to certain morphs produce relatively large clutches at the expense of fewer clutches per unit time. However, experimental data revealed no difference in relative fat content between dark and pale individuals maintained either in sun-exposed outdoor enclosures (where they were unable to increase their body temperature by basking) or in shaded enclosures. This suggest that the divergence in life history strategies among colour morphs may reflect a response to morph-specific differences in adult survival imposed by visually searching predators, rather than being due to the effects of differences in body temperature.  相似文献

Genetic variation for fitness‐relevant traits may be maintained in natural populations by fitness differences that depend on environmental conditions. For herbivores, plant quality and variation in chemical plant defences can maintain genetic variation in performance. Apart from plant secondary compounds, symbiosis between plants and endosymbiotic fungi (endophytes) can produce herbivore‐toxic compounds. We show that there is significant variation among aphid genotypes in response to endophytes by comparing life‐history traits of 37 clones of the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on endophyte‐free and endophyte‐infected tall fescue Lolium arundinaceum. Clonal variation for life‐history traits was large, and most clones performed better on endophyte‐free plants. However, the clones differed in the relative performance across the two environments, resulting in significant genotype × environment interactions for all reproductive traits. These findings suggest that natural variation in prevalence of endophyte infection can contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity in aphid populations.  相似文献

Recessive resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., in laboratory-selected strains of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), is associated with three resistance alleles (r1, r2, and r3) of a cadherin gene. Previous experiments based on measurement of fitness components in Bt-resistant and Bt-susceptible strains revealed that fitness costs and incomplete resistance are associated with resistance. Here, we used two hybrid strains of pink bollworm, each containing a mixture of susceptible and resistant individuals, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifications to test the association between cadherin genotype and fitness components for individuals sharing a common genetic background. All survivors on Bt cotton had two r alleles, confirming that recessive cadherin alleles are tightly linked with resistance to Bt cotton. On non-Bt cotton, significantly greater developmental time for rr than ss larvae indicated a recessive fitness cost, but costs did not affect survival or pupal weight. Incomplete resistance was manifested as longer developmental time, lower survival, and smaller pupal weight in rr individuals developing on Bt cotton compared with non-Bt cotton. As in previous experiments, no significant variation in performance on Bt cotton was detected among rr genotypes. However, a meta-analysis of data from seven experiments revealed that survival on Bt cotton relative to non-Bt cotton was lower in r2r3 and higher in r1r2 compared with the other rr genotypes. Assessment of fitness components associated with cadherin genotypes in hybrid strains of pink bollworm confirms that recessive resistance to Bt cotton is associated with recessive fitness costs and incomplete resistance.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory life table experiments were conducted using nine clones of obligately parthenogenetic Daphnia pulex that were collected from a site in the Canadian low-arctic. Two of the nine clones were diploids, while the other seven clones were polyploids. Significant clonal differences in age at first reproduction, size at first reproduction, number of offspring in each of the first three broods, offsrring sizes for the first two broods, and intrinsic rates of natural increase were detected. Differences in life histories were evident between polyploids and diploids. Generally, polyploid clones reached maturity at later ages, matured at larger sizes, produced smaller broods, and larger offspring than the diploid clones. The data are discussed in reference to potential biotic (i.e. invertebrate predation) and abiotic factors (i.e. physicochemical gradients) that may influence life history variation in this clonal assemblage.  相似文献

Reaction norms of fourteen life history and morphological traits were investigated in four tetra- and two hexaploid genotypes of the annual weed species complex, Polygonum aviculare. The plants were cultivated in six treatments consisting of factorial combinations of three pot sizes and two fertility levels. All characters, except life span, were plastic but the relative importance of genotype (G), treatment (T) and interaction (G × T) to total variance was strongly trait-specific. Consistent genetic differentiation, not correlated with ploidy level, was found in metamer size and life history: genotypes originating from trampled sites had smaller metamers and shorter shoots while those originating from sites with a short growing season, due to weeding activities, had a shorter life span, an earlier flowering date and a higher biomass allocation to reproduction compared to genotypes from less disturbed sites. Significant variation was found in reaction norms for all characters, including a lower amount of plasticity in metamer size in genotypes with numerous metamers and a lower amount of plasticity in total weight in shortlived genotypes. This suggested that variation in phenotypic plasticity reflected developmental constraints imposed by contrasting life span and metamer size in different genotypes. There was no evidence for niche differentiation along the soil resource gradient, suggesting that the species is comprised of “general purpose” genotypes with respect to soil fertility. It is concluded that the Polygonum aviculare complex has evolved a “dual” adaptive strategy i.e. a combination of genetic polymorphism and high phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

In situ life table of a subtropical copepod   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
  • 1 A life table of a subtropical population of Mesocyclops edax(Copepoda: Cyclopoida) was constructed from a cohort of individuals reared in enclosures in a small, eutrophic lake.
  • 2 The lake population was sampled concurrently to determine age structure, per capita birth, death and growth rates, body size and clutch size.
  • 3 Maturation times of enclosed males and females were 9.3 and 11.4 days, respectively. The population growth rate. r. was estimated to be 0.18 females day-1 for the enclosed population, but approximated zero on most dates in the lake population. Mortality was low in the enclosures which excluded predators and high in the field population exposed to planktivorous fish and Chaoborus.
  • 4 The means and variances of several fitness traits are related to the specific environment. The enclosure approach promises to be a useful tool in the study of zooplankton life history variation.

Host race formation in phytophagous insects can be an early stage of adaptive speciation. However, the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in host use is another possible outcome. Using a reciprocal transplant experiment we tested the hypothesis of local adaptation in the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae. Aphid genotypes derived from two sympatric host plants, Brassica oleracea and B. campestris, were assessed in order to measure the extent of phenotypic plasticity in morphological and life history traits in relation to the host plants. We obtained an index of phenotypic plasticity for each genotype. Morphological variation of aphids was summarized by principal components analysis. Significant effects of recipient host on morphological variation and life history traits (establishment, age at first reproduction, number of nymphs, and intrinsic growth rate) were detected. We did not detected genotype × host plant interaction; in general the genotypes developed better on B. campestris, independent of the host plant species from which they were collected. Therefore, there was no evidence to suggest local adaptation. Regarding plasticity, significant differences among genotypes in the index of plasticity were detected. Furthermore, significant selection on PC1 (general aphid body size) on B. campestris, and on PC1 and PC2 (body length relative to body size) on B. oleracea was detected. The elevation of the reaction norm of PC1 and the slope of the reaction norm for PC2 (i.e., plasticity) were under directional selection. Thus, host plant species constitute distinct selective environments for B. brassicae. Aphid genotypes expressed different phenotypes in response to the host plant with low or nil fitness costs. Phenotypic plasticity and gene flow limits natural selection for host specialization promoting the maintenance of genetic variation in host exploitation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that natural selection is capable of maintaining allozyme variation in natural populations was tested using a species of flour beetles,Tribolium confusum. We selected a polymorphic locus (a locus encoding variation for malic enzyme) in an experimental population ofT. confusum and scored the genotypes at this locus for a series of fitness components on different flour types. Measurements included survival rate, development time, fecundity, and rate of egg cannibalism. Flour type had significant effects on most traits. Significant differences among genotypes for fecundity and rates of egg cannibalism and the presence of genotype × flour type interactions for development time were demonstrated. Thus, changes in allele frequencies at the malic enzyme locus could in part be under the influence of natural selection. The existence of genotype × flour type interactions suggests that environmental heterogeneity could maintain allozyme variation at the malic enzyme locus.  相似文献

In studies of sexual selection, larger size is often argued to increase male fitness, and relatively smaller males are explained by genetic and/or environmental variation. We demonstrate that a size–development life‐history trade‐off could underlie the maintenance of a broad, unimodal distribution of size in male redback spiders (Latrodectus hasselti). Larger males are superior in direct competition, but redback males mature rapidly at small size in the presence of females. In field enclosures, we simulated two competitive contexts favouring development of divergent male sizes. Relatively smaller males lost when competing directly, but had 10 times higher fitness than relatively larger males when given the temporal advantage of rapid development. Linear selection gradients confirmed the reversal of selection on size, showing that it is critical to consider life‐history decisions underlying the development of traits related to fitness.  相似文献

Genotype by environment interactions in winter survival in red deer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. The extent to which environmental heterogeneity interacts with genetic hetero geneity to affect individual fitness within populations has the potential to affect the dynamics of natural populations and the amount of genetic variation maintained in natural populations, yet is a relatively poorly investigated topic in either ecology or evolutionary biology.
2. Many individual-based studies are precluded from such investigations by the practical problems of measuring heritability of traits affecting fitness and the difficulties of experimental manipulation of the study population. One way of demonstrating how commonly genotype by environmental interactions affect fitness, though not their overall importance in determining fitness, is to investigate fitness in a population subdivided by genotype at one or more marker loci.
3. We analyse data on calf winter survival from a population of red deer from the Isle of Rum, Scotland. Data on individual survival, environmental fluctuations and genotype at 13 loci were collected from 1982 to 1994.
4. We found associations between survival over the first winter of life and calf genotype at two out of three allozyme loci and five out of 10 microsatellite loci. All of the results remained significant under randomization tests. Other genotypes that initially appeared to have an association with survival were rejected when bootstrapped, usually due to insufficient data or anomalies in the data.
5. Our results suggest that associations between fitness and genotype are common. Five out of the seven associations found involved interactions with environmental variables. Four of these showed density-dependent selection with different genotypes showing high survival at high population size compared to low population size and one interacted with autumn rainfall. In a sixth case, genotype interacted with sex.  相似文献

Summary The widespread occurrence of wing polymorphisms in insects suggests that the possession of wings and ability to fly adversely affect components of the insect's life characteristics that contribute to its Darwinian fitness. This hypothesis was tested by an analysis of the differences in life history parameters of the macropterous and micropterous morphs of the two cricket species G. firmus and A. fasciatus. In both species there were no differences in development time or adult survival between the two morphs. Significant differences in head width were not consistent between the two species but in both sexes of G. firmus and females of A. fasciatus (insufficient males for analysis) long-winged individuals weighed more than short-winged individuals with the same head width. In both species egg production is delayed in macropterous females. The cumulative fecundity of the micropterous morph is greater than the macropterous morph in both species but only in G. firmus is the difference statistically significant. A. fasciatus frequently loose their wings but no such loss has been observed in G. firmus. There is a significant increase in egg production after the loss of the wings. These results are in accord with those of Tanaka (1976) for the cricket, Pteronemobius taprobanensis.Breeding experiments indicate that in G. firmus the wing polymorphism is under genetic control. The decrease in fecundity is sufficiently large that genotypes producing only macropterous offspring could only persist in highly unstable environments where continuous dispersal was imperative for survival. However, the reproductive cost of a genotype producing a small percentage of macropterous individuals is slight. The fitness that accrues to a genotype producing a few dispersing offspring is likely to offset the small reproductive cost and hence wing polymorphisms should be favoured.  相似文献

Seasonal polyphenism constitutes a specific type of phenotypic plasticity in which short‐lived organisms produce different phenotypes in different times of the year. Seasonal generations of such species frequently differ in their overall lifespan and in the values of traits closely related to fitness. Seasonal polyphenisms provide thus excellent, albeit underused model systems for studying trade‐offs between life‐history traits. Here, we compare immunological parameters between the two generations of the European map butterfly (Araschnia levana), a well‐known example of a seasonally polyphenic species. To reveal possible costs of immune defence, we also examine the concurrent differences in several life‐history traits. Both in laboratory experiments and in the field, last instar larvae heading towards the diapause (overwintering) had higher levels of both phenoloxidase (PO) activity and lytic activity than directly developing individuals. These results suggest that individuals from the diapausing generation with much longer juvenile (pupal) period invest more in their immune system than those from the short‐living directly developing generation. The revealed negative correlation between pupal mass and PO activity may be one of the reasons why, in this species, the diapausing generation has a smaller body size than the directly developing generation. Immunological parameters may thus well mediate trade‐offs between body size‐related traits.  相似文献

The amount of resources available during development often affects body size, causing phenotypic variation in life‐history traits and reproductive behaviours. However, past studies have seldom examined the reaction norms of both life‐history and behavioural traits versus body size. We measured the phenotypic plasticity of several life‐history (age‐specific egg load, egg size, longevity) and behavioural (oviposition rate, host marking rate, walking speed) traits of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) in response to body size variation. We predicted that life‐history traits would show more evidence of size compensation than behavioural traits, resulting in fewer positively‐sloped size versus trait reaction norms among the former. As predicted by life‐history models, smaller wasps appear to shift resource allocation towards early‐life reproduction, having a similar egg load to large individuals 9 days after emergence. Surprisingly, longevity was unaffected by body size. However, egg size, the number of offspring produced during oviposition bouts, and the rate of subsequent egg synthesis were greater for larger individuals. In addition, as predicted, the reaction norms of behavioural traits versus body size were all positively sloped. Thus, despite possible adaptive compensatory plasticity of life‐history traits by small individuals, behavioural constraints directly related to body size would contribute to maintaining a positive size–fitness relationship.  相似文献

Genetic variation for seedling and adult fitness components was measured under natural conditions to determine the relative importance of the seedling stage for lifetime fitness in Erigeron annuus. Variation in lifetime reproductive success can result from both the persistent effects of genetic variation expressed among seedlings and from variation in adult fitness components. Analysis of covariance was used to separate the stage specific from the cumulative effects of genetic variance expressed earlier in the life cycle. E. annuus produces seeds through apomixis, which allowed measurement of the fitness of replicate genotypes from germination through the entire life cycle. There were significant differences among genotypes for date of emergence, seedling size, survivorship and fecundity, but heritabilities were low, indicating slow response to selection. For all characters, environmental components of variance were one to two orders of magnitude larger than genetic variance components, resulting in broad sense heritabilities less than 0.1. For seedling size and fecundity, all of the genetic variance was in the form of genotype-environment interactions, often with large negative genetic correlations across environments. In contrast, genotypes differed in mean survivorship through one year, but there were no genotype-environment interactions for viability. Genetic differences in viability were primarily expressed as differences in overwinter survivorship. Genotype × environment interactions among sites and blocks were generated early in the life cycle while the genotype × environment interactions in response to competitive environment (open, annual cover, perennial cover) first appeared in adult fecundity. Genetic variation in lifetime fitness was not significant, despite a fourfold difference in mean fitness among genotypes.  相似文献

Summary Facultative paedomorphosis in salamanders occurs when larvae respond to varying environmental conditions by either metamorphosing into terrestrial metamorphic adults or retaining their larval morphology to become sexually mature paedomorphic adults. Several hypotheses have been proposed for the evolutionary maintenance of this environmentally induced dimorphism, but few data are available to assess them adequately. We studied a montane population of the tiger salamander,Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum, and measured the adult growth rate and body condition across three growing seasons to assess the relative costs and benefits of each morph. Metamorphic adults grew more than paedomorphic adults in terms of snout—vent length across years and in weight within years. Dietary analyses and foraging experiments revealed some of the proximate factors that may underlie these differential growth patterns. Across all prey, metamorphs had significantly higher biomass and calories per stomach sample than paedomorphs. Metamorphic diets primarily consisted of the fairy shrimpBranchinecta coloradensis, whereas paedomorphic diets contained a variety of benthic and terrestrial invertebrates. Foraging experiments revealed that both morphs are more successful at capturing fairy shrimp relative to other prey types and both show high electivity toward this prey. However, fairy shrimp occurred only in non-permanent ponds and thus are inaccessible to paedomorphs, which can survive only in permanent ponds. Paedomorphs also experience higher levels of intraspecific competition with large larvae in permanent ponds than metamorphs do in non-permanent ponds. Thus, metamorphs obtain a growth advantage over paedomorphs by foraging in non-permanent ponds that contain fairy shrimp and have reduced intraspecific competition. These results suggest that paedomorphs should have decreased fitness relative to metamorphs, primarily because metamorphs can move into the best habitats for growth. The net fitness effect of morph-specific differences in dispersal depend on whether there are trade-offs with other life history traits. Nonetheless, because the relative benefit of metamorph dispersal will change with environmental conditions in permanent ponds and the surrounding habitat, the relative fitness payoff to each morph should track changes in the environment. Thus, facultative paedomorphosis may be maintained in part by variable, environmentally-specific fitness payoffs to each morph.  相似文献

In the present study, the effect of chemical cues from two fish species (mosquitofish and pumpkinseed), at different concentrations, was tested in life history experiments with Daphnia longispina. The two fish species used represent the most abundant planktivores of many Mediterranean shallow lakes (SW Europe), where the indigenous fish communities have been replaced by such exotic assemblages. Results have shown a similar response of D. longispina to both fish species: kairomones stimulated daphnids to produce more offspring, which resulted in higher fitness (r), relatively to a fishless control. Fish presence also induced an earlier first reproduction, a smaller size at maturity of daphnids, and the production of smaller-sized neonates. Significant correlations with fish concentration (indirect measure of fish kairomone concentration) were found for size at maturity and neonate size, for both fish species. These results are in accordance to the “positive response” observed by other authors, which represents a defence mechanism to face losses caused by fish predators. The chemically mediated size reduction of mature females and neonates is an adaptive response to the size-selective predation exerted by fish. Pumpkinseed introduction is very recent in the lake of origin of the daphnids used in the experiments and its kairomone produced similar effects to mosquitofish in the life history of D. longispina. These results are contrary to the existence of a species-specific kairomone and support the hypothesis of a general fish kairomone.
