Data are given on the fleas of Citellus musicus from Central Caucasus. Ecological peculiarities of fleas from the above region were compared with data known for fleas from plain Precaucasus. Differences between annual cycles of fleas of the same species from two altitude belts of the Baksan valley are considered. Epizootological significance of ecological peculiarities of fleas in the Baksan plague nidus is discussed.  相似文献

In experiments, the mean life duration of fleas Leptopsylla segnis on white mice (abundance of fleas within natural limits, up to 10 fleas per mouse) was 22.7 days in females and 18.8 day in males. Maximum life duration was 51 and 37 days respectively. In cases, when the initial numbers of fleas were 20 and 28-34 fleas, the duration of life was decreased. The maximum limit decreased greater than the mean duration of life. A survival dynamics of fleas depended upon the flea number. It was found out, that in cases of high abundance of fleas in the beginning of experiments, the mortality rate of males was lower than in females. During the stay on a host the fleas lost gradually an ability to endure a starvation. Possible mechanisms of the regulation of flea abundance are discussed.  相似文献

Cats (n = 5) were vaccinated with membrane antigens extracted from the gut of unfed fleas (Ctenocephalides felis felis) together with Quil A and RIBI as adjuvants. Five unvaccinated cats were retained as controls. All the cats were infested on 6 separate occasions with fleas (46–250 per challenge). Protection was assessed from the number of fleas retrieved and the fecundity of the female fleas, measured as the number of developed oocytes contained in the reproductive tract. Cats injected with gut membrane antigens had significantly elevated levels of anti-flea antibodies in their sera, but they were neither protected significantly against infestation with fleas nor was the apparent fecundity of fleas which had fed on vaccinated cats decreased. The possible reason why gut membrane antigens failed to protect cats against fleas are discussed.  相似文献

Rickettsia felis is a rickettsial pathogen primarily associated with the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. Although laboratory studies have confirmed that R. felis is maintained by transstadial and transovarial transmission in C. felis, distinct mechanisms of horizontal transmission of R. felis among cat fleas are undefined. Based on the inefficient vertical transmission of R. felis by cat fleas and the detection of R. felis in a variety of haematophagous arthropods, we hypothesize that R. felis is horizontally transmitted between cat fleas. Towards testing this hypothesis, flea transmission of R. felis via a bloodmeal was assessed weekly for 4 weeks. Rhodamine B was used to distinguish uninfected recipient and R. felis-infected donor fleas in a rickettsial horizontal transmission bioassay, and quantitative real-time PCR assay was used to measure transmission frequency; immunofluorescence assay also confirmed transmission. Female fleas acquired R. felis infection more readily than male fleas after feeding on a R. felis-infected bloodmeal for 24 h (69.3% and 43.3%, respectively) and both Rickettsia-uninfected recipient male and female fleas became infected with R. felis after cofeeding with R. felis-infected donor fleas (3.3-40.0%). Distinct bioassays were developed to further determine that R. felis was transmitted from R. felis-infected to uninfected fleas during cofeeding and copulation. Vertical transmission of R. felis by infected fleas was not demonstrated in this study. The demonstration of horizontal transmission of R. felis between cat fleas has broad implications for the ecology of R. felis rickettsiosis.  相似文献

Abstract. Cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, were released onto calves as unusual hosts, and sampled at intervals for histological examination. Egg output from fleas on age-matched male and female calves was monitored. Using indicators of reproductive maturation and regression together with egg output data, the reproductive success and fertility of cat fleas on male and female calves were estimated. Comparisons were made with fleas taken from cats. The mean egg output of fleas on the bull calf was highly significantly different from that on the age-matched female calf: 28.14 ± 2.96 (SE) eggs/h compared with 16.21 ± 1.96 (SE) eggs/h. A higher proportion of sampled fleas (83.0%) was reproductively mature on the feline hosts compared with the calves (45.4-62.5%). Blue bodies resulting from oocyte resorption were present in the ovarioles of 10.4-19.0% of fleas sampled from the calves. No blue bodies were present in fleas removed from cats. Eggs laid by fleas on calves were viable and larvae were reared to adulthood. The mean percentage hatching success on the age-matched male and female calves was 46.7% and 51.7%. This represents a reduction in viability of 28-33% compared with eggs laid by fleas on cats. Factors which may account for reduced reproductive maturation of fleas on calves, including protein content of the host's blood, are discussed.  相似文献

When rearing fleas under laboratory conditions maximum productivity was observed in breeding cages with 100 fleas (80 females and 20 males). When the number of fleas was increased to 250 and 500 specimens the progeny decreased in number. At the ratio between males and females of 1 : 2 and 1 : 4 the productivity of fleas virtually did not change. Of all species studied fleas of X. cheopis are characterized by most high productivity. In all months of the year the average number of hatched fleas per one cage was 13-15 thou. of X. cheopis, 7-8 thou. of C. tesquorum, 1.5-2.5 thou. of X. skrjabini, and 3-4 thou. of Ct. wladimiri.  相似文献

Aim  To identify the factors that determine the geographical range sizes of ectoparasites with different degrees of host specificity.
Location  The study used data on the distributions of fleas of the genus Amphipsylla and their rodent hosts across the Holarctic.
Methods  All known points of occurrence of 32 flea species and 51 species of their rodent hosts were mapped. The shape and size of the geographical range of each species were estimated using a combination of the minimal convex polygon technique and modelling with the garp algorithm. Factors determining the geographical range sizes of the fleas were identified using stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results  The geographical range size of fleas that are strongly host-specific across their entire ranges correlated positively with the geographical range size of the fleas' principal hosts, and negatively with the geographical range size of the fleas' potential competitors. The geographical range sizes of both (1) fleas that are locally host-specific but that shift their host preferences geographically, and (2) host-opportunistic fleas were positively correlated only with the area of the geographical ranges of their principal hosts. Strongly host-specific fleas occupied 0.2–80.0% of the geographical range of their principal hosts, whereas this figure was 0.9–83.7% in locally host-specific fleas and 16.6–63.7% in host-opportunistic fleas.
Main conclusions  The main determinant of the geographical range size of a flea species is the size of the geographical range of its hosts. The role of potential competitors in determining the geographical range size is stronger in host-specific than in host-opportunistic fleas. Cases in which the geographical range of a parasite is smaller than the geographical range(s) of its host(s) owing to narrower parasite environmental tolerances are much more frequent in host-opportunistic than in host-specific fleas.  相似文献

A study was conducted on the fleas of P. scorodumovi and five local strains of the plague microbe, one of which is typical of the strains of the Altai subspecies and four are non-typical of this nidus. The fleas of this species are capable to transmit not only the plague agent of the strains typical of this nidus but also non-typical ones which differ in some biological properties and are avirulent for most carriers but Pallas's pika. Biological peculiarities of fleas of P. scorodumovi in addition to their high efficiency as vectors of the plague microbe enable us to associate the more active autumn epizooty with fleas of this species.  相似文献

中国云南部分人间鼠疫流行区蚤类区系调查(英文)   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
归纳了中国云南 13个人间鼠疫流行区的调查资料 ,对调查疫区的蚤类区系进行了研究。总计捕获12 0 77只小兽 ,隶属啮齿目、食虫目及攀目 3个目中的 9科、2 9属、4 7种。从小兽体表共采获 9369只蚤 ,经分类鉴定 ,隶属 5科、18属、33种。 33种蚤及 4 7种小兽宿主均按其分类阶元详细列于文末。结果表明 ,山区蚤及小兽宿主的种数明显多于坝区。坝区农耕地的优势种相对简单 ,优势种地位突出 ,黄胸鼠及印鼠客蚤分别是最重要的宿主及蚤种 (构成比分别为 83 2 7%和 75 32 % )。山区的优势种相对较复杂 ,优势种的种类较多 ,但其构成比较低 ( 10 96%~ 4 7 95% )。黄胸鼠及绒鼠为山区地带的两种优势宿主 ,缓慢细蚤、端凹栉眼蚤、印鼠客蚤、偏远古蚤及短突栉眼蚤为山区地带的 5种优势蚤种。多数蚤种可寄生两种以上的小兽宿主 ,但其所寄生的主要宿主并不多。结果提示 ,作为疫区主要媒介的印鼠客蚤及其所对应的主要寄生宿主 (黄胸鼠 )在坝区突出的优势种地位 ,似可解释近年疫区的鼠疫病人主要出现在坝区的原因  相似文献

Accelerated impregnation and maturation of the rabbit flea coincides with the spring peak litter-size of the rabbit, but its breeding performance falls off before that of the domestic host. A kairomone nestling factor, which boosts copulation, impregnation and development of fleas feeding on the newborn young, is also present in relatively feeble amounts in baby rabbit urine. This urine boosts pairing of matured (="primed") fleas united in tubes away from a host, but impregnation is increased only if fleas are feeding on newborn young while exposed to the urine.
Undeveloped fleas matured on the pregnant doe require a transfer to another host before they will pair, whereas fleas matured on the nestlings copulate without a transfer. A variable time-lag between transfer and copulation of fleas, dependent on the "priming" qualities of the preparatory host, suggests that a chemical intermediary is involved.
If the antennae of the females are coated with vaseline, the maturation of these fleas is delayed feeding on nestlings, but not on the prepartum doe. This delay is less marked during the spring acceleration than at other times of the year.
The breeding of a North American species of hare flea ( Cediopsyllu simplex (Baker)) parasitizing Sylvilagus floridanus (Allen) is also controlled by the sex hormones of the host.  相似文献

Los Angeles and Orange Counties are known endemic areas for murine typhus in California; however, no recent reports of flea‐borne rickettsioses are known from adjacent San Bernardino County. Sixty‐five opossums (Didelphis virginiana) were trapped in the suburban residential and industrial zones of the southwestern part of San Bernardino County in 2007. Sixty out of 65 opossums were infested with fleas, primarily cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché, 1835). The flea minimum infection rate with Rickettsia felis was 13.3% in pooled samples and the prevalence was 23.7% in single fleas, with two gltA genotypes detected. In spite of historic records of murine typhus in this area, no evidence for circulation of R. typhi in fleas was found during the present study. Factors contributing to the absence of R. typhi in these cat fleas in contrast to its presence in cat fleas from Orange and Los Angeles Counties are unknown and need to be investigated further in San Bernardino County.  相似文献

Five hundred and thirteen fleas, of eight different species, were collected from a sample of 252 foxes killed in suburban London. 25–8% of foxes carried fleas, with a mean of 204 fleas per fox. Levels of infestation of male and female hosts did not differ significantly. Possible sources of the fleas infesting foxes are discussed with respect to their seasonal occurrence and fox prey composition. No evidence was found to support the suggestion that foxes obtain the majority of their fleas from prey items, although occasional heavy infestations of some flea species were probably derived from recent meals. Although Pulex irritans, Paraceras m. melis and Ctenocephalides canis , which contributed 35 % of the flea epifauna, could be considered parasitic on the fox, it seems probable that foxes pick up the majority of their fleas from the habitat through which they move. Thus, two particularly heavily infested categories of foxes were found: (1) juveniles during July-September, their fleas probably being accumulated during exploratory and play activities, and (2) all animals during the period October-December.  相似文献

The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouche, 1835) (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae), which is found worldwide and which parasitizes many species of wild and domestic animal, is a vector and/or reservoir of bacteria, protozoa and helminths. To aid in the study of the physiology and behaviour of fleas and of their transmission of pathogens, it would be of value to improve the laboratory rearing of pathogen‐free fleas. The conditions under which artificially reared fleas at the University of Bristol (U.K.) and the Rickettsial Diseases Institute (France) are maintained were studied, with different ratios of male to female fleas per chamber (25 : 50, 50 : 100, 100 : 100, 200 : 200). The fleas were fed with bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine or human blood containing the anticoagulants sodium citrate or EDTA. Egg production was highest when fleas were kept in chambers with a ratio of 25 males to 100 females. In addition, the use of EDTA as an anticoagulant rather than sodium citrate resulted in a large increase in the number of eggs produced per female; however, the low percentage of eggs developing through to adult fleas was lower with EDTA. The modifications described in our rearing methods will improve the rearing of cat fleas for research.  相似文献

14 species of fleas were recorded from 173 nests of 47 species of birds. Most abundant of them are Ceratophyllus vagabundus, C. gallinae, C. borealis. The abundance of fleas was found to depend on season and hosts' habitat. The above species were most frequently encountered in nests in May. The high abundance index of fleas was registered in birds nesting in hollows, burrows of small mammals and in clefts of rocks.  相似文献

【目的】了解云南居民区鼠类寄生蚤的群落结构和空间分布特征。【方法】根据云南不同经纬度、 海拔等自然环境条件, 于2007年4月-2012年11月, 选取云南17个县(市) 居民区作为样区, 系统开展鼠类体外寄生蚤的调查, 运用群落结构指标对居民区鼠类寄生蚤的群落特征和沿环境梯度的空间分布进行研究。【结果】结果显示: 在调查的17个县(市)室内共检获鼠类体外寄生蚤521头, 隶属4科7亚科9属12种。居民区寄生蚤的纬度和垂直分布类似, 低纬度和低海拔范围的种类相对较少, 印鼠客蚤和缓慢细蚤是室内寄生蚤的优势种。相对纬度和海拔较高的区域, 居民区寄生蚤种类增多, 但优势种不突出; 在经度水平分布上, 蚤种类于99°~101°E经度带形成一个高峰, 室内寄生的优势种印鼠客蚤和缓慢细蚤几乎在所有经度带都可见到分布, 显示了较宽的生态幅。另外, 居民区寄生蚤物种丰富度和多样性指数水平分布(纬度)和垂直分布呈现为单峰格局, 总体显示随着纬度和海拔的升高, 先升高后降低的分布特征, 而在另一个水平分布(经度), 则呈现由西向东呈递减的趋势。【结论】研究认为, 云南居民区蚤类的空间分布表现为独特的地理区域特征, 气候环境、 森林植被和人类生活生产方式通过影响蚤类栖息生境来影响蚤类的分布。  相似文献

【目的】分析云南省玉龙鼠疫疫源地野外鼠形动物寄生蚤丰盛度的影响因素。【方法】选取云南省玉龙鼠疫疫源地3个海拔区域,按4个季节进行野外捕鼠,捕获的鼠形动物用梳检法收集体表寄生蚤并在显微镜下分类鉴定。通过实际测量和实地观察相结合的方式收集潜在影响鼠形动物寄生蚤丰盛度的因素包括鼠形动物特征变量指标(如种类、年龄、性别、体长、体重)、环境和气象因子(如海拔、季节)等数据。采用EpiData 3.02软件建立数据库,在R软件下使用跨栏负二项分布回归分析鼠形动物寄生蚤丰盛度的影响因素。【结果】从捕获的884只鼠形动物中检获寄生蚤9种484头,以特新蚤指名亚种、方叶栉眼蚤、无值大锥蚤、云南栉眼蚤为主(86.16%)。回归分析显示: 2 700-3 000 m和3 000 m以上海拔鼠形动物染蚤概率较2 400-2 700 m分别增加1.27和3.72倍;湿度高于70%时,鼠形动物染蚤概率较湿度≤70%时减少41%;与齐氏姬鼠的染蚤概率相比,中华姬鼠的染蚤概率降低50%,大绒鼠的染蚤概率增加79%;体长超过104 mm的鼠形动物染蚤概率较体长≤104 mm的鼠形动物染蚤概率增加76%;气温高于15℃时,鼠形动物染蚤数量较温度≤15℃时降低67%;成年鼠形动物的染蚤数量较未成年鼠形动物的染蚤数量增加2.25倍;与春季相比,夏季的染蚤数量增加2.00倍,秋季的染蚤概率减少48%,冬季的染蚤概率和染蚤数量分别增加1.44和1.06倍。【结论】玉龙鼠疫疫源地野外鼠形动物寄生蚤以特新蚤指名亚种、方叶栉眼蚤、无值大锥蚤、云南栉眼蚤为优势蚤种。鼠形动物寄生蚤丰盛度与海拔、季节、气温、湿度等环境气象因子及鼠形动物种类、体长、年龄等鼠形动物特征变量密切相关。  相似文献

Weasels were regularly livetrapped, anaesthetized and searched for fleas over two years, in Wytham Woods, near Oxford. Eleven species of fleas were identified among 262 collected. Seven normally occur on small rodents, one on rats, two on moles and one on birds. Fleas were collected on 103 of 338 occasions when an unconscious weasel was examined; on average males carried 0·6 fleas, females 1·5 fleas, but there was no significant difference between the proportion of males and females infested. The species distribution of the fleas on weasels in Wytham suggests that they acquire their fleas mainly from the nests and runways of their prey, which they have hunted through or taken over. Important prey, e.g. birds (22% of prey items identified) with uninviting nests contributed few fleas (2%); non-prey, e.g. moles (0–4% of items) with highly desirable nests, contributed disproportionately many, including 35 fleas (15%) of two species otherwise monoxenous on moles. A similar pattern is shown by the fleas carried by stoats in New Zealand.  相似文献
