Aboveground net production rates of the subalpine stone pine (Pinus pumila) forests in central Japan were estimated by the summation method; net production was defined as the sum of annual biomass increment and annual loss due to death. In the two pine stands of different scrub heights, P1 (200 cm) and P2 (140 cm), aboveground biomass reached 177 and 126 ton ha−1, respectively. Leaf biomass was about 14 ton ha−1 in each stand. The estimates of aboveground net production during the 2 year period (1987–1989) averaged 4.1 and 3.7 ton ha−1 y−1 in P1 and P2, respectively, which were at the lowest among the pine forests in the world. Two indices of efficiency of energy fixation, that is, the ratio of net production to the total radiation during a growing season and the ratio of net production to total radiation per unit of leaf weight, were evaluated. Both efficiency indices for the twoP. pumila stands fell in the range obtained for other Japanese evergreen conifer forests. This suggested that the low annual net production of the stone pine stands were mainly due to a limitation in the length of the growing season. The pine forests were also characterized by a small allocation (about 17%) of aboveground net production into biomass increment, in comparison with other evergreen conifer forest types. Annual net carbon gain in theP. pumila forests was suggested to be largely invested in leaf production at the expense of the growth of woody parts.  相似文献

Size, biomass and spatial distribution patterns of belowground woody organs ofPinus pumila trees were investigated. Dry weight estimates of five sample trees were between 14 and 36 kg tree−1. Belowground stems accounted for about 32% of the total tree weight. However, the belowground stems had extensive barkless portions, indicating that the decomposition of dead belowground stems was an important source of organic matter in the soil. The, basal diameters of adventitious roots tended to become smaller as their orginating positions neared the ground surface. It was suggested thatP. pumila trees regenerate by successively producing adventitious roots from their buried stems and moving down the slope.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in abundances of major soil micro-arthropods were assessed at aPinus pumila scrub in an alpine range of central Japan during a period with no snow coverage. The total abundance showed a peak in late August, reaching no less than 140 000 m−2, which was comparable to that in an evergreen coniferous plantation in the cool-temperate zone. Collembola was the most dominant group of soil micro-arthropods, comprising about 50% of the total, followed by oribatid mites (Acari [O]) occupying 20%. Annual mean air temperature was no more than 2.1 °C and the daily fluctuation in temperature was less in soil layers. The thickness of the A0 layer reached 9–10 cm and soil organic matter accumulation was estimated to be 45–58 ton dry weight ha−1. The large amount of litterfall and organic matter accumulation in the soil, comparable to those of sub-alpine evergreen coniferous forests, and a lower decomposition rate due to severe environmental conditions, suggest the relative importance of litter processing by soil micro-arthropods such as Collembola and Acari, especially in alpine regions.  相似文献

Rates of net photosynthesis and dark respiration were measured for detached needles ofPinus pumila trees growing on the Kiso mountain range in central Japan in 1987. Dependency of photosynthesis on light and temperature was examined in relation to needle age and season. The light saturation point of net photosynthesis was lower in 3- and 4-yr-old needles than that in current (flushed in 1987), 1- and 2-yr-old needles.P nmax, net photosynthetic rates at 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 and 15°C, of needles from 1- to 4-yr-old generally decreased with needle age.P nmax of 1- to 4-yr-old needles became higher in August than in other months, andP nmax of current needles did so in September. Current needles showed high respiration rates (at 15°C) only in August. Optimum air temperatures for net photosynthesis at 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 were between 10 and 15°C for current and 1-yr-old needles. The temperature coefficient of dark respiration rates was 2.3–3.3 for current needles from August to October, and 2.2 for 1-yr-old needles in mid-July.  相似文献

In previous investigations, natural layering of Japanese stone pine (Pinus pumila) was suggested by the occurrence of adventitious roots. However, there is no genetic evidence so far that this species actually produces offspring by natural layering. We, therefore, investigated clonal structure and spatial genetic structure within a 38×18 m plot on Mt. Aino-dake, using allozyme, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analyses. We found 24 genets, with stems found to be genetically identical in multiple tests, which extended later-ally against the direction of the slope, indicating that there were clonal structures originating from elongation of ramified stems and subsequent natural layering. The results suggest, however, that less than one third of the 200 stems analyzed from this site were clonaly propagated. We also analyzed spatial genetic structure by spatial autocorrelation. Many of the spatial autocorrelation coefficients were significantly positive in short distance classes. We concluded that the species has genetic structures which largely originate from clonal propagation and avian seed dispersal.  相似文献

Pantropical trends in mangrove above-ground biomass and annual litterfall   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
A major paradigm in biosphere ecology is that organic production, carbon turnover and, perhaps, species diversity are highest at tropical latitudes, and decrease toward higher latitudes. To examine these trends in the pantropical mangrove forest vegetation type, we collated and analysed data on above-ground biomass and annual litterfall for these communities. Regressions of biomass and litterfall data show significant relationships with height of the vegetation and latitude. It is suggested that height and latitude are causally related to biomass, while the relationship with litterfall reflects the specific growing conditions at the respective study sites. Comparison of mangrove and upland forest litterfall data shows similar trends with latitude but indicates that mangrove litterfall is higher than upland forest litterfall. The regression equations allow the litterfall/biomass ratio to be simulated, and this suggests that the patterns of organic matter partitioning differ according to latitude.  相似文献

Summary The content of elements in needles ofPinus caribaea trees growing upon infertile savanna soils was analysed at 3 and 5 years after the tap roots of a subset of trees had been severed. No significant differences were found between the content of elements in treated and control trees, nor were significant differences found in increments of diameter of the trees over 5 years. It is concluded that this organ plays no significant nutritional role in the trees on these soils, and that tree growth can be achieved exclusively from atmospheric nutrient accessions and exchangeable nutrient reserves in the topsoil.  相似文献

Morphological examination and PCR-RFLP analysis of the D1/D2 region in nuclear LSU rDNA were carried out to identify a rust fungus onPinus pumila collected in the North Kurils, Russia. Morphologically, the rust from the North Kurils was similar toPeridermium kurilense andEndocronartium sahoanum var.hokkaidoense in the spore surface structure, dimension and shape. In the RFLPs of the D1/D2 region it was identical toE. sahoanum var.hokkaidoense andE. sahoanum var.sahoanum, but distinct fromCronartium ribicola. Therefore, the rust fungus onP. pumila collected in the North Kurils was identified asE. sahoanum var.hokkaidoense. Anthesis in individual flowers of Nuphar pumila (Timm) DC. occurs for four consecutive days. First-day flowers are protogynous and functionally female. Flowers can open completely on the first day of anthesis. This contrasts with all previous reports, which state that first-day flowers of Nuphar are characterized by partial expansion of the calyx, leaving a distal small triangular opening just above the stigmatic disc. Flowers close completely on the first night of anthesis and remain partially open on the subsequent three nights. During the entire anthesis period the stigmas emit a sweet, fruity odor and the petal nectaries produce visible nectar drops. The stigma of N. pumila is secretory and unicellular-papillate. Pollen grains are monosulcate with long spines. Our observations on the mating system of N. pumila indicate that neither asexual seed production nor spontaneous self-pollination occurs. Cross-pollination of second-, third- and fourth-day flowers produced few seeds. Flowers of N. pumila were mainly pollinated by sweat bees, with flies playing a minor pollination role. No beetle visits were observed. Our insect-pollination observations substantiate the view that the relative contribution of flies, bees, and beetles to pollination in a single Nuphar population depends on two factors: the relative abundance of the insects, and presence of alternative food sources.  相似文献

Variation patterns in phenotypic plasticity and broad sense heritability of 26 characters were examined within and among closely adjacent habitats of the bearded iris,Iris pumila. It was found thatI. pumila has considerable differentiation for phenotypic plasticity and genetic variation over short distances. An analysis of relationships between character differentiation and phenotypic plasticity suggests that they could have evolved independently. Possible mechanisms for maintaining local differentiation of the observed plastic and genetic variation are also discussed.  相似文献

Summary Proliferation of terminal and axillary buds of 20 yr-oldPinus caribaea andP. kesiya trees was obtained on half strength DCR medium supplemented with 0.5 mg·liter−1 6-benzylaminopurine (BA). These sprouts further elongated with the formation of multiple shoots with the ratio of 1:3, on transfer to medium in which the 0.25 mg·liter−1 BA of the initiation medium was replaced by 0.25 mg·liter−1 kinetin. Rooting was obtained on the same medium. Plantlets thus formed were transferred to perlite:peat:vermiculite mixture (1:1:1) in polybags (10×5 cm) under 80±5% humidity in a polyhouse. Plantlets ofP. caribaea andP. kesiya were established with 72.5 and 83.3% survival, respectively.  相似文献

The variation in the maternal effects on a number of the earlyIris pumila seedling traits expressed under high and low light levels in a growthroom was studied. A reciprocal crossing design was used for the establishment of 20 full-sib families. Each family consisted of two maternal groups differing only in genotype used as a seed parent. Maternal variation was estimated from the variance between maternal groups within sibships. Two parameters for maternal variation were computed: the maternal effects coefficient m2 and the coefficient of maternal variation CVM. Maternal effects significantly accounted for the phenotypic variation in seed mass and most of the early seedling traits. Light conditions prevailing during the seedling development markedly influenced overall structure of maternal correlations. Implications of maternal correlations on the integration of juvenile phenotype have also been discussed.  相似文献

The paper describes the biomass and productivity of maple (Acer cappadocicum) forest occurring at an altitude of 2,750 m in the west central Himalayas. Total vegetation biomass was 308.3 t ha−1, of which the tree layer contributed the most, followed by herbs and shrubs. The seasonal forest-floor litter mass varied between 5.4 t ha−1 (in rainy season) and 6.6 t ha−1 (in winter season). The annual litter fall was 6.2 t ha−1, of which leaf litter contributed the largest part (59% of the total litter fall). Net primary productivity of total vegetation was 19.5 t ha−1 year−1. The production efficiency of leaves (net primary productivity/leaf mass) was markedly higher (2.9 g g−1 foliage mass year−1) than those of the low-altitude forests of the region.  相似文献

To evaluate the reserve dynamics in pine needles, an index of specific needle weight (SNW; dry weight per unit length of needles) was provided. Developed needles ofPinus thunbergii did not show any additional elongation in their second year. Thus the seasonal change in SNW of developed needles was proved to indicate the dynamics of reserves in needles. SNW showed distinct seasonal change. It increased from autumn to carly spring, followed by a decrease by mid summer. This pattern of change was similar to the change in specific leaf weight (SLW) of evergreen broad leaves in temperate regions. It was concluded that the change in SNW indicated clearly the dynamics of reserves in needles, showing the accumulation in non-growth seasons and the consumption in subsequent growth seasons. The decrease in SNW during the growth season was 10–15% of the maximum found in early spring.  相似文献

The organization ofPinus sylvestris pollen tubes during growth was studied by video microscopy of living cells and by electron microscopy after freeze-fixation and freeze-substitution (FF-FS). Pollen germinated and the tubes grew slowly for a total period of about 7 days. Some of the grains formed two tubes, while 10–50% of the tubes ramified. These features are in accordance with development in vivo. The cytoplasmic hyaline cap at the tip disappeared during the 2nd or 3rd day of culture. Aggregates of starch grains progressively migrated from the grain into the tube and later into the branches. Vacuoles first appeared at day 2 and eventually filled large parts of the tube. The tube nucleus was located at variable distances from the tip. Some of the organelles showed linear movements in a mostly circulatory pattern, but the majority of the organelles showed brownian-like movements. Rhodamine-phalloidin-stained actin filaments had a gross axial orientation and were found throughout the tube including at the tip. The ultrastructure of pollen tubes was well preserved after FF-FS, but signs of shrinkage were visible. The secretory vesicles in growing tips were not organized in a vesicle cone, and coated pits had a low density with only local accumulations, which is in accordance with slow growth. The mitochondria contained small cristae and a darkly stained matrix and were located more towards the periphery of the tube, indicating low respiratory activity and low oxygen levels. The dictyosomes carried typical trans-Golgi networks, but some contained less than the normal number of cisternae. Other elements of the cytoplasm were irregularly spaced rough endoplasmic reticulum, many multivesicular bodies, lipid droplets and two types of vacuoles. The typical organization associated with tip growth in angiosperm pollen tubes, e.g.Nicotiana tabacum, was not present inP. sylvestris pollen tubes. The different morphology may relate to the growth rate and not to the type of growth.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Altitudinal timberlines are thought to move upward by global warming, a crucial topic in ecology. Tall tree species (the conifer Abies mariesii and the deciduous broad-leaved Betula ermanii) dominate the sub-alpine zone between 1600 and 2500 m a.s.l., the timberline, on Mount Norikura in central Japan. Dwarf pine Pinus pumila dominates above the timberline to near the summit (3026 m a.s.l.). This study evaluated how the timberline formed on Mount Norikura by examining altitudinal changes in stand structure and dynamics around the timberline.

Methods

One hundred and twenty-five plots of 10 m × 10 m were established around the timberline (2350–2600 m a.s.l.). Trunk diameter growth rate during 6 years was examined for A. mariesii, B. ermanii and P. pumila. Mortality during this period and mechanical damage scars on the trunks and branches due to strong wind and snow were examined for A. mariesii only.

Key Results

The density, maximum trunk height and diameter of A. mariesii in plots decreased with altitude. The maximum trunk height of B. ermanii decreased with altitude, but density and maximum trunk diameter did not decrease. In contrast, the density of P. pumila abruptly increased from around the timberline. A strong negative correlation was found between the densities of P. pumila and tall tree species, indicating their interspecific competition. Trunk diameter growth rates of A. mariesii and B. ermanii did not decrease with altitude, suggesting that these two tall tree species can grow at the timberline. The ratio of trees with mechanical damage scars increased with altitude for A. mariesii, a tendency more conspicuous for larger trees. The mortality of larger A. mariesii was also greater at higher altitude. Tall tree species may not increase their trunk height and survive around the timberline because of mechanical damage.

Conclusions

This study suggests that the altitudinal location of the timberline is mainly affected by mechanical damage due to strong wind and snow rather than by growth limitation due to low temperature. Therefore, the timberline would not move upward even under global warming if these growth and mortality characteristics do not change for a long time.  相似文献

Recently, there is a remarkable boom in the sales of Labisia pumila (Kacip Fatimah) in the Malaysian market, as an extract of the plant is used to gain energy and libido as well as to treat many other ailments. A chemical analysis of its roots was undertaken and three metabolites, demethylbelamcandaquinone B (1), fatimahol (2), and dexyloprimulanin (3) together with 21 known compounds including epoxyoleanane glycosides, alkenated phenolics, cerebroside, glycerogalactolipids, and lipids were isolated and identified. Structure elucidation was achieved by spectroscopic and chemical studies. The MeOH extract of KF and compounds 12 and 13 exhibited moderate in vitro antibacterial activity.  相似文献

Summary Structural and ultrastructural changes occurring in the living cells of young plants ofPinus halepensis Mill. artificially infected withMatsucoccus josephi Bodenheimer et Harpaz, were studied. The study revealed that, opposite the places of attachment of the insects to the stem, groups of enlarged cells occurred in the cortex and often also in the phloem and cambial zones. In the enlarged cortical parenchyma cells there was a pronounced increase in the volume of the cytoplasm. The nuclei were large and lobed. The ER appeared in two forms, in very long cisternae arranged in parallel, and in short variously oriented tubules. The plastids were without grana, contained a tubular network and many plastoglobuli. Mitochondria and dictyosomes were relatively numerous. In order to determine the seasonal growth and biomass ofTrapa japonica Flerov, field observations were carried out at Ojaga-ike Pond, Chiba, Japan, during 1979 and 1980. In spring, the plant showed exponential growth (c. 0.080 g g−1 day−1) and shoot elongation was as rapid as 10 cm day−1. The plant attained its maximum biomass (380.5±35.1 g m−2) in late August, and about 50% of this was concentrated in the topmost 30-cm stratum (645.7±33.1 g m−3); maximum total stem length exceeded 6m. The plant produced large (500–800 mg per fruit), but small numbers of nut-like fruit (maximum, 5 fruits per rosette). Defoliation occurred almost linearly with time at a rate of 30.6 leaves m−2 day−1; annual net leaf production was estimated to be about twice as large as the seasonal maximum leaf biomass. While the number of leaves per rosette showed moderate seasonal change, rosette density, rosette area and leaf dry weight changed considerably during the year. From the negative log-log correlation between mean total leaf dry weight per rosette and rosette density, density-dependent rosette growth was assumed. The cause of the wide spread of this species in aquatic habitats is briefly discussed in terms of its seed size and morphology.  相似文献
