A model of neural network to recognize spatiotemporal patterns is presented. The network consists of two kinds of neural cells: P-cells and B-cells. A P-cell generates an impulse responding to more than one impulse and embodies two special functions: short term storage (STS) and heterosynaptic facilitation (HSF). A B-cell generates several impulses with high frequency as soon as it receives an impulse. In recognizing process, an impulse generated by a P-cell represents a recognition of stimulus pattern, and triggers the generation of impulses of a B-cell. Inhibitory impulses with high frequency generated by a B-cell reset the activities of all P-cells in the network. Two examples of spatiotemporal pattern recognition are presented. They are achieved by giving different values to the parameters of the network. In one example, the network recognizes both directional and non-directional patterns. The selectivities to directional and non-directional patterns are realized by only adjusting excitatory synaptic weights of P-cells. In the other example, the network recognizes time series of spatial patterns, where the lengths of the series are not necessarily the same and the transitional speeds of spatial patterns are not always the same. In both examples, the HSF signal controls the total activity of the network, which contributes to exact recognition and error recovery. In the latter example, it plays a role to trigger and execute the recognizing process. Finally, we discuss the correspondence between the model and physiological findings.  相似文献

A neural network model of the mechanism of selective attention in visual pattern recognition is proposed and simulated on a digital computer. When a complex figure consisting of two patterns or more is presented to the model, it is segmented into individual patterns, and each pattern is recognized separately. Even if one of the patterns to which the model is paying selective attention is affected by noise or defects, the model can recall the complete pattern from which the noise has been eliminated and the defects corrected. It is not necessary for perfect recall that the stimulus pattern should be identical in shape to the training pattern. Even though the pattern is distorted in shape or changed in size, it can be correctly recognized and the missing portions restored. The model consists of a hierarchical neural network which has efferent as well as afferent connections between cells. The afferent and the efferent signals interact with each other in the network: the efferent signals, that is, the signals for selective attention, have a facilitating effect on the afferent ones, and, at the same time, the afferent signals gate efferent signal flow. When some feature in the stimulus is not extracted in the afferent paths, the threshold for detection of that feature is automatically lowered by decreasing the efficiency of inhibition, and the model tries to extract even vague traces of the undetected feature.  相似文献

Fold recognition techniques assist the exploration of protein structures, and web-based servers are part of the standard set of tools used in the analysis of biochemical problems. Despite their success, current methods are only able to predict the correct fold in a relatively small number of cases. We propose an approach that improves the selection of correct folds from among the results of two methods implemented as web servers (SAMT99 and 3DPSSM). Our approach is based on the training of a system of neural networks with models generated by the servers and a set of associated characteristics such as the quality of the sequence-structure alignment, distribution of sequence features (sequence-conserved positions and apolar residues), and compactness of the resulting models. Our results show that it is possible to detect adequate folds to model 80% of the sequences with a high level of confidence. The improvements achieved by taking into account sequence characteristics open the door to future improvements by directly including such factors in the step of model generation. This approach has been implemented as an automatic system LIBELLULA, available as a public web server at http://www.pdg.cnb.uam.es/servers/libellula.html.  相似文献

A template matching model for pattern recognition is proposed. By following a previouslyproposed algorithm for synaptic modification (Hirai, 1980), the template of a stimulus pattern is selforganized as a spatial distribution pattern of matured synapses on the cells receiving modifiable synapses. Template matching is performed by the disinhibitory neural network cascaded beyond the neural layer composed of the cells receiving the modifiable synapses. The performance of the model has been simulated on a digital computer. After repetitive presentations of a stimulus pattern, a cell receiving the modifiable synapses comes to have the template of that pattern. And the cell in the latter layer of the disinhibitory bitory neural network that receives the disinhibitory input from that cell becomes electively sensitive to that pattern. Learning patterns are not restricted by previously learned ones. They can be subset or superset patterns of the ones previously learned. If an unknown pattern is presented to the model, no cell beyond the disinhibitory neural network will respond. However, if previously learned patterns are embedded in that pattern, the cells which have the templates of those patterns respond and are assumed to transmit the information to higher center. The computer simulation also shows that the model can organize a clean template under a noisy environment.  相似文献

A neural network model for a mechanism of visual pattern recognition is proposed in this paper. The network is self-organized by learning without a teacher, and acquires an ability to recognize stimulus patterns based on the geometrical similarity (Gestalt) of their shapes without affected by their positions. This network is given a nickname neocognitron. After completion of self-organization, the network has a structure similar to the hierarchy model of the visual nervous system proposed by Hubel and Wiesel. The network consits of an input layer (photoreceptor array) followed by a cascade connection of a number of modular structures, each of which is composed of two layers of cells connected in a cascade. The first layer of each module consists of S-cells, which show characteristics similar to simple cells or lower order hypercomplex cells, and the second layer consists of C-cells similar to complex cells or higher order hypercomplex cells. The afferent synapses to each S-cell have plasticity and are modifiable. The network has an ability of unsupervised learning: We do not need any teacher during the process of self-organization, and it is only needed to present a set of stimulus patterns repeatedly to the input layer of the network. The network has been simulated on a digital computer. After repetitive presentation of a set of stimulus patterns, each stimulus pattern has become to elicit an output only from one of the C-cell of the last layer, and conversely, this C-cell has become selectively responsive only to that stimulus pattern. That is, none of the C-cells of the last layer responds to more than one stimulus pattern. The response of the C-cells of the last layer is not affected by the pattern's position at all. Neither is it affected by a small change in shape nor in size of the stimulus pattern.  相似文献

A model of texture discrimination in visual cortex was built using a feedforward network with lateral interactions among relatively realistic spiking neural elements. The elements have various membrane currents, equilibrium potentials and time constants, with action potentials and synapses. The model is derived from the modified programs of MacGregor (1987). Gabor-like filters are applied to overlapping regions in the original image; the neural network with lateral excitatory and inhibitory interactions then compares and adjusts the Gabor amplitudes in order to produce the actual texture discrimination. Finally, a combination layer selects and groups various representations in the output of the network to form the final transformed image material. We show that both texture segmentation and detection of texture boundaries can be represented in the firing activity of such a network for a wide variety of synthetic to natural images. Performance details depend most strongly on the global balance of strengths of the excitatory and inhibitory lateral interconnections. The spatial distribution of lateral connective strengths has relatively little effect. Detailed temporal firing activities of single elements in the lateral connected network were examined under various stimulus conditions. Results show (as in area 17 of cortex) that a single element's response to image features local to its receptive field can be altered by changes in the global context.  相似文献

Visual attention appears to modulate cortical neurodynamics and synchronization through various cholinergic mechanisms. In order to study these mechanisms, we have developed a neural network model of visual cortex area V4, based on psychophysical, anatomical and physiological data. With this model, we want to link selective visual information processing to neural circuits within V4, bottom-up sensory input pathways, top-down attention input pathways, and to cholinergic modulation from the prefrontal lobe. We investigate cellular and network mechanisms underlying some recent analytical results from visual attention experimental data. Our model can reproduce the experimental findings that attention to a stimulus causes increased gamma-frequency synchronization in the superficial layers. Computer simulations and STA power analysis also demonstrate different effects of the different cholinergic attention modulation action mechanisms.  相似文献

A consideration of the storage of information as an energized neuronal state leads to the development of a new type of neural network model which is capable of pattern recognition, concept formation and recognition of patterns of events in time. The network consists of several layers of cells, each cell representing by connections from the lower levels some combination of features or concepts. Information travels toward higher layers by such connections during an association phase, and then reverses during a recognition phase, where higher-order concepts can redirect the flow to more appropriate elements, revising the perception of the environment. This permits a more efficient method of distinguishing closely-related patterns and also permits the formation of negative associations, which is a likely requirement for formation of "abstract" concepts.  相似文献

We studied the dynamics of a neural network that has both recurrent excitatory and random inhibitory connections. Neurons started to become active when a relatively weak transient excitatory signal was presented and the activity was sustained due to the recurrent excitatory connections. The sustained activity stopped when a strong transient signal was presented or when neurons were disinhibited. The random inhibitory connections modulated the activity patterns of neurons so that the patterns evolved without recurrence with time. Hence, a time passage between the onsets of the two transient signals was represented by the sequence of activity patterns. We then applied this model to represent the trace eye blink conditioning, which is mediated by the hippocampus. We assumed this model as CA3 of the hippocampus and considered an output neuron corresponding to a neuron in CA1. The activity pattern of the output neuron was similar to that of CA1 neurons during trace eye blink conditioning, which was experimentally observed.  相似文献

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have become increasingly sophisticated and are widely used for the extraction of patterns or meaning from complicated or imprecise datasets. At the same time, our knowledge of the biological systems that inspired these ANNs has also progressed and a range of model systems are emerging where there is detailed information not only on the architecture and components of the system but also on their ontogeny, plasticity and the adaptive characteristics of their interconnections. We describe here a biological neural network contained in the cephalopod statocysts; the statocysts are analogous to the vertebrae vestibular system and provide the animal with sensory information on its orientation and movements in space. The statocyst network comprises only a small number of cells, made up of just three classes of neurons but, in combination with the large efferent innervation from the brain, forms an 'active' sense organs that uses feedback and feed-forward mechanisms to alter and dynamically modulate the activity within cells and how the various components are interconnected. The neurons are fully accessible to physiological investigation and the system provides an excellent model for describing the mechanisms underlying the operation of a sophisticated neural network.  相似文献

Presenting simultaneous but spatially discrepant visual and auditory stimuli induces a perceptual translocation of the sound towards the visual input, the ventriloquism effect. General explanation is that vision tends to dominate over audition because of its higher spatial reliability. The underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. We address this question via a biologically inspired neural network. The model contains two layers of unimodal visual and auditory neurons, with visual neurons having higher spatial resolution than auditory ones. Neurons within each layer communicate via lateral intra-layer synapses; neurons across layers are connected via inter-layer connections. The network accounts for the ventriloquism effect, ascribing it to a positive feedback between the visual and auditory neurons, triggered by residual auditory activity at the position of the visual stimulus. Main results are: i) the less localized stimulus is strongly biased toward the most localized stimulus and not vice versa; ii) amount of the ventriloquism effect changes with visual-auditory spatial disparity; iii) ventriloquism is a robust behavior of the network with respect to parameter value changes. Moreover, the model implements Hebbian rules for potentiation and depression of lateral synapses, to explain ventriloquism aftereffect (that is, the enduring sound shift after exposure to spatially disparate audio-visual stimuli). By adaptively changing the weights of lateral synapses during cross-modal stimulation, the model produces post-adaptive shifts of auditory localization that agree with in-vivo observations. The model demonstrates that two unimodal layers reciprocally interconnected may explain ventriloquism effect and aftereffect, even without the presence of any convergent multimodal area. The proposed study may provide advancement in understanding neural architecture and mechanisms at the basis of visual-auditory integration in the spatial realm.  相似文献

A model of neural network extracting binocular parallax is proposed. It is a multilayered network composed of analog threshold elements. Three types of binocular neurons are included in this model. They are binocular simple neurons, binocular gate neurons and binocular depth neurons. The final layers of this model consist of elements which correspond to the binocular depth neurons. The performance of the model has been simulated on a digital computer. The results of the computer simulation show that every element of this model acts like neurons found in cat's and monkey's visual system and this model extracts binocular parallax caused by simple line components satisfactorily.  相似文献

A hierarchical neural network model for associative memory   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A hierarchical neural network model with feedback interconnections, which has the function of associative memory and the ability to recognize patterns, is proposed. The model consists of a hierarchical multi-layered network to which efferent connections are added, so as to make positive feedback loops in pairs with afferent connections. The cell-layer at the initial stage of the network is the input layer which receives the stimulus input and at the same time works as an output layer for associative recall. The deepest layer is the output layer for pattern-recognition. Pattern-recognition is performed hierarchically by integrating information by converging afferent paths in the network. For the purpose of associative recall, the integrated information is again distributed to lower-order cells by diverging efferent paths. These two operations progress simultaneously in the network. If a fragment of a training pattern is presented to the network which has completed its self-organization, the entire pattern will gradually be recalled in the initial layer. If a stimulus consisting of a number of training patterns superposed is presented, one pattern gradually becomes predominant in the recalled output after competition between the patterns, and the others disappear. At about the same time when the recalled pattern reaches a steady state in he initial layer, in the deepest layer of the network, a response is elicited from the cell corresponding to the category of the finally-recalled pattern. Once a steady state has been reached, the response of the network is automatically extinguished by inhibitory signals from a steadiness-detecting cell. If the same stimulus is still presented after inhibition, a response for another pattern, formerly suppressed, will now appear, because the cells of the network have adaptation characteristics which makes the same response unlikely to recur. Since inhibition occurs repeatedly, the superposed input patterns are recalled one by one in turn.  相似文献

A self-organizing, feature-extracting network (von der Malsburg, 1973) is extended to two feature dimensions to encompass line orientation and color. It is applied to McCollough effects, particularly longlasting, contingent-aftereffects. McCollough effects are thought to involve low-level associative memory in the form of synaptic modification. The McCollough-Malsburg Model (MMM) embodies positive synaptic modification with correlated firing of units in an input layer and an excitatory cortical layer. Computer simulation of MMM reproduces orientation-contingent color aftereffects. The model embodies many of the mechanisms thought to be operating in developmental plasticity, suggesting that equivalent mechanisms may be involved in adult long-term adaptation as well. This work was supported in part by NIH Grant No. 5 R01 NS09755-4 COM of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (M.A. Arbib, Principal Investigator)  相似文献

A neural network which models multistable perception is presented. The network consists of sensor and inner neurons. The dynamics is established by a stochastic neuronal dynamics, a formal Hebb-type coupling dynamics and a resource mechanism that corresponds to saturation effects in perception. From this a system of coupled differential equations is derived and analyzed. Single stimuli are bound to exactly one percept, even in ambiguous situations where multistability occurs. The network exhibits discontinuous as well as continuous phase transitions and models various empirical findings, including the percepts of succession, alternative motion and simultaneity; the percept of oscillation is explained by oscillating percepts at a continuous phase transition. This paper deals with the problem of representing and generating unconstrained aiming movements of a limb by means of a neural network architecture. The network produced time trajectories of a limb from a starting posture toward targets specified by sensory stimuli. Thus the network performed a sensory-motor transformation. The experimenters trained the network using a bell-shaped velocity profile on the trajectories. This type of profile is characteristic of most movements performed by biological systems. We investigated the generalization capabilities of the network as well as its internal organization. Experiments performed during learning and on the trained network showed that: (i) the task could be learned by a three-layer sequential network; (ii) the network successfully generalized in trajectory space and adjusted the velocity profiles properly; (iii) the same task could not be learned by a linear network; (iv) after learning, the internal connections became organized into inhibitory and excitatory zones and encoded the main features of the training set; (v) the model was robust to noise on the input signals; (vi) the network exhibited attractor-dynamics properties; (vii) the network was able to solve the motorequivalence problem. A key feature of this work is the fact that the neural network was coupled to a mechanical model of a limb in which muscles are represented as springs. With this representation the model solved the problem of motor redundancy.  相似文献

Humans are apt at recognizing patterns and discovering even abstract features which are sometimes embedded therein. Our ability to use the banknotes in circulation for business transactions lies in the effortlessness with which we can recognize the different banknote denominations after seeing them over a period of time. More significant is that we can usually recognize these banknote denominations irrespective of what parts of the banknotes are exposed to us visually. Furthermore, our recognition ability is largely unaffected even when these banknotes are partially occluded. In a similar analogy, the robustness of intelligent systems to perform the task of banknote recognition should not collapse under some minimum level of partial occlusion. Artificial neural networks are intelligent systems which from inception have taken many important cues related to structure and learning rules from the human nervous/cognition processing system. Likewise, it has been shown that advances in artificial neural network simulations can help us understand the human nervous/cognition system even furthermore. In this paper, we investigate three cognition hypothetical frameworks to vision-based recognition of banknote denominations using competitive neural networks. In order to make the task more challenging and stress-test the investigated hypotheses, we also consider the recognition of occluded banknotes. The implemented hypothetical systems are tasked to perform fast recognition of banknotes with up to 75 % occlusion. The investigated hypothetical systems are trained on Nigeria’s Naira banknotes and several experiments are performed to demonstrate the findings presented within this work.  相似文献

Motion recognition has received increasing attention in recent years owing to heightened demand for computer vision in many domains, including the surveillance system, multimodal human computer interface, and traffic control system. Most conventional approaches classify the motion recognition task into partial feature extraction and time-domain recognition subtasks. However, the information of motion resides in the space-time domain instead of the time domain or space domain independently, implying that fusing the feature extraction and classification in the space and time domains into a single framework is preferred. Based on this notion, this work presents a novel Space-Time Delay Neural Network (STDNN) capable of handling the space-time dynamic information for motion recognition. The STDNN is unified structure, in which the low-level spatiotemporal feature extraction and high-level space-time-domain recognition are fused. The proposed network possesses the spatiotemporal shift-invariant recognition ability that is inherited from the time delay neural network (TDNN) and space displacement neural network (SDNN), where TDNN and SDNN are good at temporal and spatial shift-invariant recognition, respectively. In contrast to multilayer perceptron (MLP), TDNN, and SDNN, STDNN is constructed by vector-type nodes and matrix-type links such that the spatiotemporal information can be accurately represented in a neural network. Also evaluated herein is the performance of the proposed STDNN via two experiments. The moving Arabic numerals (MAN) experiment simulates the object's free movement in the space-time domain on image sequences. According to these results, STDNN possesses a good generalization ability with respect to the spatiotemporal shift-invariant recognition. In the lipreading experiment, STDNN recognizes the lip motions based on the inputs of real image sequences. This observation confirms that STDNN yields a better performance than the existing TDNN-based system, particularly in terms of the generalization ability. In addition to the lipreading application, the STDNN can be applied to other problems since no domain-dependent knowledge is used in the experiment.  相似文献
