The ejaculate of diverse primate species consists of two portions, liquid and solid; the latter, known as the seminal coagulum, is thought to sequester large numbers of sperm. In the black-handed spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), ejaculates collected by electroejaculation did not always contain seminal coagulum. The objective of the present study was to determine seasonal emission of seminal coagulum and in vivo sperm dynamics in the black-handed spider monkey. Seminal coagulum emission was related to season; it was more frequent in the dry season, coincident with maximal female fertility. Sperm concentration was higher (P = 0.02) in the dry season (dry vs. rainy season: 137.9 +/- 15.7 sperm/mL vs. 82.56 +/- 14.7 x1 0(6) sperm/mL; mean +/- S.E.M.) but also in ejaculates (collected during the rainy season) that had seminal coagulum (coagulum vs. no coagulum: 140.0 +/- 29.3 sperm/mL vs. 31.2+/-0.1 x 10(6) sperm/mL, P<0.001). In semen samples collected from the uterus after AI, the percentage of linearly motile sperm was higher during the dry season (dry vs. rainy: 9.1+/-2.1% vs. 5.9+/-2.5%), as well as whenever coagulum was present (coagulum vs. no coagulum: 13.0+/-3.2% vs. 2.0+/-0.9%, P<0.001).  相似文献

The influence of season on the ejaculate characteristics of Zebu, Friesian and their crossbred bulls in an A.I. programme in Nigeria was investigated over a 2-year period.Ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, percent morphologically normal spermatozoa and percent live spermatozoa were significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season. Total spermatozoa per ejaculate averaged 3.32 × 109 and 10.10 × 109 for the dry and rainy seasons respectively. Corresponding proportions of total morphologically defective spermatozoa per ejaculate were 14.05% and 6.46%. Percent live spermatozoa were 82.34% and 84.61% while the corresponding sperm concentrations were 0.97 × 109 rmand 1.74 × 109 for the dry and rainy seasons respectively. All differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05).Ejaculate quality was better during the rainy season. Consequently semen collected and frozen during the rainy season may produce higher fertility rates in an A.I. programme.  相似文献

Twelve water quality variables were measured at different intervals (biweekly and twice a week) in two ponds during two consecutive production cycles in a semi-intensive shrimp farm on the Northwest coast of Mexico. The average harvest during dry season (March–July, a 95 days period) was 1822 kg ha-1, with an average size of 16.0 g; while the harvest in the rainy season (August–January, a 165-day period) was 2125 kg ha-1, with an average size of 11.9 g. In the rainy season, dissolved oxygen concentration tended to decrease as the feeding rates and shrimp and phytoplankton biomass were increasing until harvest. During both culture cycles, mean values of temperature, salinity and ammonium in ponds were not significantly different from those in inlet water, whereas pH levels in ponds were higher than in incoming water.Nitrogen nutrients, pH and particulate organic matter levels in ponds and inlet water did not exhibit seasonal differences; the better yield and feed conversion obtained during rainy season reflect the fact that temperature and mean chlorophyll a were higher during the rainy than in the dry season; salinity and total suspended solids were lower during the dry than in the rainy season. The mean levels of the water quality variables in the two ponds were not significantly different in both grow out cycles. Therefore, the differences in productivity between ponds cannot be explained by the water quality.  相似文献

There are no reported data on hormonal fluctuations in black‐handed spider monkey males. On previous research about the reproductive physiology of this monkey we have found that during the dry season females show ovulatory estrogen peaks and males present the best quality semen. As part of an ongoing research, in this study we assessed seasonal variations in the concentration of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in three adult spider monkey males to corroborate the seasonal reproductive synchrony. At the same time sperm count and motility were evaluated to search for any correlation between those sperm parameters and hormonal concentrations. We took blood and semen samples (by electroejaculation) of anesthetized males throughout the rainy (June–September) and dry (October–May) months. Our results revealed that T and LH were higher throughout the dry season and there was a significant correlation between T concentration and sperm count. Although higher during the dry season, sperm motility tended to correlate with testosterone and LH levels. These results demonstrated that black‐handed spider monkeys have a tendency to show a seasonal pattern of reproduction being the dry season the most likely time to achieve fertilization. Am. J. Although season has been shown to affect bull sperm quality and fertility in some studies, the effect of season on seminal plasma proteins has not been examined. In the present study, seminal plasma proteins were analysed by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC), to separate the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins and heparin-binding proteins from the other proteins. Semen samples were collected from bulls in three seasons: winter, summer and the rainy season. Sperm quality was analysed by flow cytometry and computer assisted sperm analysis, and further aliquots of semen were used to prepare the seminal plasma for FPLC. Meteorological data were available from a location close to the bull station. There were slight differences in sperm kinematics between seasons, but other parameters of sperm quality were not different. Minor differences in the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins were detected according to season, being lower in summer than in winter or in the rainy season, although there were no changes in the heparin-binding proteins. Temperature, humidity and rainfall differed between winter and the rainy season, but no differences were observed between summer and the rainy season except in the temperature humidity index (THI). However, the THI was above the threshold indicative of heat stress in all seasons, which could explain why few seasonal differences in protein composition were detected in this study. Alternatively, the bulls could have been well-adapted to heat stress. In conclusion, there were only slight differences in bull sperm quality and seminal plasma proteins between seasons during this study.  相似文献

Teressa goat is a unique goat breed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) of India. Effects of Flaxseed oil (FSO) supplementation in body weight (BW), scrotal circumference (SC), testicular volume (TV) and testicular weight (TW), endocrinological profiles, sex behavioural profiles (SBPs), oxidative stress markers and semen production and its quality profiles in rainy and dry summer season were studied in Teressa goat. Male goats (n = 12) of 3–4 years old were equally divided into control and treated groups. Treated animals received 25 mL FSO per day. Oral drenching of FSO was done in the morning before feeding the concentrate ration. Body weight, scrotal circumference, TV and TW were measured in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Blood follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), cortisol and prolactin, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Libido score (LS), mating ability score (MAS) and sex behavioural score (SBS) were estimated at time of semen collection in bucks of FSO treated and untreated during rainy and dry summer seasons. Semen samples (n = 100; 50 semen samples from each season; each 25 semen samples from control and treatment groups per season) were collected and analysed for semen quality profiles. One-way ANOVA (control rainy, control dry, treated rainy and treated dry) revealed that BW, SC, TV and TW, FSH, LH, testosterone, TSH, T3 and T4 were higher (P < 0.05) and cortisol and prolactin were lower (P < 0.05) in FSO treated bucks of rainy season followed by untreated bucks of rainy season, FSO treated bucks of dry summer season and were lower (P < 0.05) in untreated bucks of dry summer season. Similarly, TAC, CAT, SOD and GSH, LS, MAS and SBS, and volume, pH, sperm concentration, mass activity, total motility (TM), viability, acrosomal integrity (AcI), plasma membrane integrity (PMI) and nuclear integrity (NI) were higher (P < 0.05) and MDA and TSA were lower (P < 0.05) in FSO treated bucks of rainy season followed by FSO treated bucks of dry summer season, untreated bucks of rainy season and were lower (P < 0.05) in untreated bucks of dry summer season. The results of the present study indicated that the breeding bucks suffered physiological stress (higher cortisol), oxidative stress (higher MDA and deficiency of antioxidants), hormonal imbalance (higher prolactin and cortisol and deficiency of gonadotropins, gonadal hormone and thyroid hormones) and infertility due to poor libido and poor semen production and its quality profiles during dry summer season. Thus, dry summer was more stressful season compared to rainy season for the goat bucks. FSO supplementation mitigated these stresses and improved the scrotal and testicular biometrics, libido, antioxidants, hormones and semen quality profiles in Teressa goat bucks. The current study concluded that FSO effectively improved the hormones, libido, antioxidant profiles, and scrotal and testicular biometrics with cascading beneficial effects on semen quality profiles in Teressa goat bucks under humid tropical island ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.  相似文献

Faecal samples (n?=?1947) from captive wild impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus) were examined over a period of 14 months to determine quantitative seasonal helminth egg excretion patterns and qualitative protozoan oocyst excretion patterns. Geometric mean monthly faecal egg counts (FECs) ranged from 20 to 575 and coprocultures revealed three parasite genera, namely Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus and Strongyloides. Larvae of the Trichostrongylus spp. were most predominant from faecal cultures. No trematode eggs or lungworms were detected and eggs of the cestode Monezia were only seen in two samples during the entire study period. The nematode FECs showed a marked seasonal variation, being higher during the rainy season, moderate during the cool dry season and low during the hot dry season. 目的利用EFM技术对纳帕海湿地不同季节7个水样样品中的浮游病毒丰度开展了调查,并对影响浮游病毒丰度的环境因子进行了相关性分析。方法元素检测,叶绿素a检测,荧光显微镜检测浮游细菌及浮游病毒的丰度。结果从生态分布上来看旱季和雨季浮游病毒丰度的平均值分别为3.63×10~6/mL和3.71×10~7/mL,浮游病毒丰度季节性变化不显著。从对影响浮游病毒丰度的环境因子相关性分析来看,旱季浮游病毒与Chl-a具有弱负相关性(r=0.49,P0.05);而雨季浮游病毒丰度与Chl-a具有显著正相关性(r=0.37,P0.05),表明雨季纳帕海湿地浮游病毒丰度受Chl-a含量的影响较大。旱季浮游病毒丰度与温度显著负相关,虽然在雨季浮游病毒丰度与温度也呈负相关,但并不显著;在雨季,水体pH变化较明显,而浮游病毒丰度与水体pH呈显著负相关,表明湿地的来水主要在雨季,而离子组成变化大。虽然在雨季和旱季,从多点采样的平均值来看浮游病毒丰度并无明显差异,但从一些局部的采样点来看,雨季的浮游病毒丰度显著高于旱季,说明在纳帕海区域浮游病毒的分布并不平均,因采样点环境的不同会产生明显的区别。结论对纳帕海高原湿地浮游病毒生态分布的调查,是对该地域生态学研究的补充,使得这一独特地理环境的微生物研究更加系统化。  相似文献

Natural lake systems represent important reservoirs for residential water supply, fish production, recreational activities and enjoyment of their natural beauty. Nevertheless, human impacts may affect their health status resulting in degradation and loss of biodiversity. The aim of the present study was to obtain data on the health status of a natural lake located in an indigenous reservation in the Brazilian Amazon, using the phytoplankton community changes along the rainy (June) and dry (November) seasons of 2006. We collected water (temperature, pH, Secchi depth and conductivity) and phytoplankton samples from the subsurface, middle of the water column, and approximately 30 cm above the bottom, over 24-hour sampling periods, from a central station in the lake. Samples taken from biotic and abiotic variables were correlated using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Results showed that the lake exhibited high temperatures in both seasons, and showed thermal stratification only during the rainy season. Dissolved oxygen exhibited a clinograde pattern in the rainy season and high oxygen in the hypolimnion in the dry season. In the rainy season, the water near the bottom was acidic, turbid and had a greater concentration of phosphorus. Dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, nitrite, total phosphorus and total dissolved phosphorus exhibited diel variations in the rainy season, whereas water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen and total dissolved phosphorus exhibited significant differences between hours of the day in the dry season. The phytoplankton was represented by 39 taxa, and Chlorophyta showed the greatest species richness, totaling 25 taxa. Among Chlorophyta, desmids were the most diverse, accounting 52%. Bacillariophyta (nine species) was the second most diverse group. Cyanophyta was represented by three species, including Merismopedia tenuissima, the most abundant taxon. Despite the occurrence of taxa that indicate organic pollution, their biomass and frequency indicate that the system is not currently threatened. Lake Caracaran? is an oligotrophic system, with low algal density and isolated blooming episodes due to its shallow depth.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of semen collection method (electroejaculation "EE" as compared with the artificial vagina "AV"), the season (summer versus winter) and the male used on macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of ejaculates in llamas. A total of 110 ejaculates were collected from six males and 92 of them were analyzed. Ejaculate volume, concentration, total sperm and the following sperm characteristics were studied: motility, membrane function (HOS test), membrane integrity (CFDA/PI fluorochromes) and morphology. 为探明同域分布的鼬獾(Melogale moschata)和食蟹獴(Herpestes urva)的日活动节律、时间生态位及其两者共存机制,于2016年12月至2017年12月,在广西弄岗国家级自然保护区开展红外相机监测获取数据,后采用核密度估计(Kernel density estimation)和重叠指数(Coefficient of overlap)对该地区的鼬獾和食蟹獴进行了研究。结果表明:鼬獾属于典型的夜行性动物,其日活动模式为双峰型,活动峰值出现在01:00—05:00和21:00—24:00;与雨季相比,旱季的活动峰值均提前1 h,活动高峰期延长3 h。食蟹獴为典型昼行性动物,其日活动模式为单峰型,活动峰值出现在11:00—18:00,与雨季相比,旱季活动高峰期提前并延长1 h。两者间的日活动模式重叠指数较低(Δ=0.17),但旱季(Δ=0.22)高于雨季(Δ=0.12)。两者主要通过改变时间生态位来避免对食物资源和领域的竞争,从而实现共存。  相似文献

The abundance, distribution and composition of the macrozooplankton of Culebra Bay, Costa Rica (10 degrees 38' N - 85 degrees 40' W) were studied at four stations throughout the dry (February-May) and rainy (September-November) seasons of 2000. The samples were collected at two-week intervals using a 500 microm mesh net with a 0.5 m diameter opening. Copepods (23-31%) and ostracods (20-34%) were predominant throughout the year, followed by cladocerans (2.5-14%), zoea (6.6-9.5%), and siphonophores (2.5-7.2%). High densities of zooplankton were obtained in February and March with peak abundance on March 18. The lowest densities were observed on September 3 and November 5. Significant differences in abundances at each station were observed for the groups Acartia tonsa (Copepoda), Ctenophora, Medusae, Ostracoda, Zoea, and Amphipoda. Comparison of the dry and rainy seasons revealed significantly higher zooplankton abundance in the dry season and copepod domination of all stations; during the rainy season ostracods dominated the off-shore areas. Zooplankton abundance and distribution are influenced by upwelling, which occurs during the dry season in Culebra Bay.  相似文献

Dung beetles are important components of most terrestrial ecosystems. In tropical rain forests, dung beetle communities can be very rich in number of species and individuals, and they are known to be useful bioindicators of habitat disturbance. In contrast, very little is known about the organization of dung beetle communities in tropical dry forests. The aim of this study was to describe in detail the dung beetle community of a Mexican tropical dry forest and to assess the relative importance of rainfall seasonality and forest structure in affecting the temporal and spatial dynamics of this community. Dung beetles were captured with pitfall traps at the beginning of the rainy season, the middle of the rainy season, and the middle of the dry season, in two distinct forest types: deciduous forest (DF) and semideciduous forest (SDF) at the Estación de Biología Chamela. Both rainfall seasonality and forest structure affected the community organization of dung beetles. During both rainy periods, 14 species were captured, but only three during the dry season. Dung beetles captured during the dry season were only found in the SDF. When comparing the beginning and the middle of the rainy season, differences in abundance and guild structure were also observed between both periods and between forest types, but these differences were much less pronounced.  相似文献

Dianchi Lake covers about a 300 km2 area. Kunming city on the edge of the lake is surrounded by industrial establishments. Farm land surrounds the remaining areas of the lake. The lake water is polluted by the Kunming city municipal sewage from 3 million inhabitants, the industrial effluent and farm runoff. Water samples were collected from 12 sites along the shore of the lake during the dry (May) and rainy (August) seasons for genotoxicity testing with the Vicia micronucleus assay during the year 1995. Genotoxicity in terms of micronuclei (MCN) frequencies in the root tip cells of Vicia showed a consistent elevated frequency of MCN over the control sample at the 0.05-0.01 levels of significance in both seasons. The MCN frequencies of sites A (Daguanhe), B (Gaoqiao) and C (Xiyuan) were 3.5-4 times as high as the control values (5.25/1000 cells) in the dry season. In the rainy season, the MCN frequencies of water samples from most of the 12 sites were relatively lower than those of the dry season except sites J (Haikou), and K (Kunyang). The average MCN frequency of the dry season samples was 14.97 per 1000 cells and that of the rainy season samples was 12.24 per 1000 cells while the average control value was around 5.00/1000 cells.  相似文献

This study attempted to clarify the relationship between the levels of 70kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) and semen quality in boars. Semen samples from 29 (13 Duroc, 9 Landrace, and 7 Yorkshire) boars (mean age=25.2+/-2.2 months) were examined. Three to four ejaculates per boar, collected during cool and hot seasons, were evaluated in terms of the sperm concentration, sperm motility, percentage of normal and abnormal sperm, as well as percentage of sperm with proximal and distal plasma droplets. Significant seasonal and breed differences in semen quality were observed. Experimental results indicate that the semen quality of Landrace boars was better than those of Yorkshire and Duroc boars (P<0.05) and semen quality declined significantly during the hot season (P<0.05). One-dimensional SDS-PAGE analysis of spermatozoa proteins indicated that protein profiles did not significantly differ between seasons and among breeds. Both constitutive and stress-inducible form of HSP70 were detected in boar spermatozoa by Western blot analysis. The level of HSP70, which revealed no difference among breeds within a season, was significantly lower during the hot season in all the three breeds (P<0.05). Although there appeared to be low correlation coefficients between the level of HSP70 and semen quality traits, the semen quality tended to decline significantly in samples with a lower level of HSP70. Results in this study suggest that the levels of HSP70 in boar spermatozoa are significantly lower during the hot season and might be associated with semen quality.  相似文献

The electrophoretic patterns of hemoglobin (Hb) and the functional properties of blood of seven migratory fish species, in two different kinds of habitat during both the rainy and dry seasons, were studied. All species showed multiple hemoglobins and very similar electrophoretic patterns except for Schizodon nasutus, which showed two cathodal components. The functional properties of blood reflect those electrophoretic patterns, since all species showed very little or no Bohr effect during each situation studied. Data on Leporinus obtusidens blood (during the rainy season), from both lotic and lentic environments, showed a normal Bohr effect (phi = -0.073). Similarly, Schizodon nasutus and Leporinus friderici from a lotic environment during the dry season were compared and showed a reverse Bohr effect (phi = 0.042). In the other 14 situations, only Leporinus elongatus from a lentic environment during the rainy season showed a statistically significant difference in log P50 values from the other fishes.  相似文献

针对南方红壤地区降雨时空分布不均的特点,以未开垦的自然植被为对照,对桂西北环境移民示范区不同季节(早季和雨季)一次性降雨前1d及降雨后4h、2d、4d、6d及8d新垦蔗地(中坡、下坡、谷地)0-20cm,20-40cm、40-60cm3个土层的土壤水分含量进行了测定.结果表明,雨后谷地蔗地的土壤有效水分增量几乎与降雨量相同,而中坡蔗地与未开垦的自然植被土壤有效水分增量仅相当于降雨量于80%.雨季雨后0-60cm土壤层次中土壤有效水分分布均匀,早季主要集中在表层.雨季一次性降雨后各哩理及各土层土壤有效水分饱和度均有显著差异;而早季3个新垦蔗地间无明显差异,3个土层以表层土壤有效水分饱和度最高,亚表层与心土层差异不明显.无论雨季还是旱季,0-60cm土层土壤有效水分的消耗速率都以自然植被处理为最低,由于雨季正是作物生长旺季,其0-60cm土层土壤有效水分的消耗速率比旱季快,按照早季雨后8d土壤有效水分的平均消耗速率,15d内0-60cm土层的有效水分将消耗殆尽。  相似文献

Blood, testicular biopsies and electroejaculates were collected from adult male impala, free-ranging in the Kruger National Park (Republic of South Africa), during the breeding (rut; April-May) and nonbreeding (September-October) seasons. Blood samples were collected at 5-min intervals for 120 min from anaesthetized males (n = 7 impala/group) treated intravenously with saline, gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH: 1 microgram/kg body weight) or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG: 10 or 30 iu/kg). Semen was collected from six more animals during the breeding season and 12 animals during the nonbreeding season using a standardized electroejaculation protocol. Ejaculates obtained during the nonbreeding season were of inferior quality to those collected during the breeding season, and were characterized by lower sperm concentrations, poorer sperm motility and more morphologically abnormal sperm forms. Within season, there were no differences in testosterone secretion between the two hCG doses, and these responses were similar to those observed after GnRH, but during the rut, testosterone secretion stimulated by both GnRH and hCG was approximately nine times greater than during the nonbreeding season. This seasonal increase in testosterone production was associated with a doubling in testicular volume and concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors. Although concentrations of testicular follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) receptors were similar between seasons, receptor content increased during rut as a result of increased testicular volume. We monitored the birth patterns of sympatric brown howler monkeys (Alouatta fusca clamitans) and northern muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides hypoxanthus) during a 4‐yr period from October 1996 to August 2000 at the Estação Biológica de Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Brown howler monkey births (n = 34) occurred throughout the year, and birth frequencies did not differ between rainy and dry season months. The aseasonal birth patterns of the howler monkeys differed significantly from the dry season concentration and dry month peak in muriqui births (n = 23). We found no effects of infant sex or the number of females on interbirth intervals (IBIs) in our 10 howler monkey study troops. IBIs of brown howler monkeys averaged 21.2 ± 2.5 mo (n = 8, median = 21.0 mo), and were significantly shorter following dry season births than rainy season births. Their IBIs and yearling survivorship (74%) were similar to those reported for other species of howler monkeys, but yearling survivorship was much lower than that of muriquis (94%), whose IBIs were more than 12 mo longer than those of the howler monkeys. Our study extends comparative knowledge of birth patterns in Alouatta to a poorly known species, and provides insights into the different ways in which diet and life history may affect the timing of births in large‐bodied platyrrhines under the same seasonal ecological conditions. The goal of this work was to correlate oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damage with classic semen parameters in spermatozoa and seminal plasma of fertile and subfertile stallions. Oxidation was measured in both lipids and proteins, using the thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) assay and the DNPH carbonyl groups assay, respectively. Sperm DNA damage was monitored using the TUNEL assay. These parameters were monitored in samples obtained during the breeding and the non-breeding seasons. In general, fertile stallions showed better classical semen parameters, and those parameters improved from the non-breeding to the breeding season, although an increase in sperm production was accompanied by a decrease in the semen quality from subfertile stallions in the breeding season. In terms of oxidation levels we found that there were clear differences whether lipids or proteins were considered. In the breeding season there seemed to be a tendency towards normalizing lipid oxidation in spermatozoa and seminal plasma, and protein oxidation in the seminal plasma, of both fertile and subfertile animals. Thus, differences monitored in the non-breeding season were no longer visible. Interestingly, a higher level of protein oxidation was found in the sperm of fertile animals in the breeding season. Considering that there were positive correlations between sperm protein oxidation and sperm motility and vitality, these results suggests that the oxidation of semen proteins may be important for sperm function. On the other hand, lipid oxidation in the seminal plasma seemed to be a general indicator for sperm damage. In the non-breeding season positive correlations between lipid and protein oxidation levels in both sperm and seminal plasma and several defects in sperm function were found, but only for subfertile animals, thus suggesting that lipid and protein oxidation may aid in the identification of subfertile stallions during the non-breeding season. Levels of ROS production never seemed to result in compromised sperm DNA integrity, indicating that measurements were within physiological levels and/or that there is an efficient antioxidant activity in stallion sperm cells.  相似文献
