Clothing evaporative resistance is an important input in thermal comfort models. Thermal manikin tests give the most accurate and reliable evaporative resistance values for clothing. The calculation methods of clothing evaporative resistance require the sweating skin surface temperature (i.e., options 1 and 2). However, prevailing calculation methods of clothing evaporative resistance (i.e., options 3 and 4) are based on the controlled nude manikin surface temperature due to the sensory measurement difficulty. In order to overcome the difficulty of attaching temperature sensors to the wet skin surface and to enhance the calculation accuracy on evaporative resistance, we conducted an intensive skin study on a thermal manikin ‘Tore’. The relationship among the nude manikin surface temperature, the total heat loss and the wet skin surface temperature in three ambient conditions was investigated. A universal empirical equation to predict the wet skin surface temperature of a sweating thermal manikin was developed and validated on the manikin dressed in six different clothing ensembles. The skin surface temperature prediction equation in an ambient temperature range between 25.0 and 34.0 °C is Tsk=34.0–0.0132HL. It is demonstrated that the universal empirical equation is a good alternative to predicting the wet skin surface temperature and facilitates calculating the evaporative resistance of permeable clothing ensembles. Further studies on the validation of the empirical equation on different thermal manikins are needed however.  相似文献

Clothing evaporative resistance is one of the inherent factors that impede heat exchange by sweating evaporation. It is widely used as a basic input in physiological heat strain models. Previous studies showed a large variability in clothing evaporative resistance both at intra-laboratory and inter-laboratory testing. The errors in evaporative resistance may cause severe problems in the determination of heat stress level of the wearers. In this paper, the effect of temperature difference between the manikin nude surface and wet textile skin surface on clothing evaporative resistance was investigated by both theoretical analysis and thermal manikin measurements. It was found that the temperature difference between the skin surface and the manikin nude surface could lead to an error of up to 35.9% in evaporative resistance of the boundary air layer. Similarly, this temperature difference could also introduce an error of up to 23.7% in the real clothing total evaporative resistance (R et_real  < 0.1287 kPa m2/W). Finally, it is evident that one major error in the calculation of evaporative resistance comes from the use of the manikin surface temperature instead of the wet textile fabric skin temperature.  相似文献

Heat stress in Greece   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
For 12 selected synoptic stations of the Greek Weather Service, the daily 12 UTC values of the thermal index Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) were calculated for the years 1980 to 1989. The locally varied occurrence of diverse thermal sensation and particularly of strong heat stress were analysed in relation to the human-biometeorological significance. With the help of a statistical model, PMV values of individual stations were transformed into a high-resolution bioclimatic map. The map presents the average annual number of days with at least strong heat stress (PMV>3.0). Received: 13 June 1996 / Revised: 10 February 1997 / Accepted: 18 February 1997  相似文献

The thermal properties of atmospheric air surrounding the human body at various altitudes are characterized with a system of parameters. This system comprises resistance of the air to convective heat transfer h c –1, °C (W/m2)−1 and to water vapour transfer h D –1, s/m. The concept of ’evaporative resistance’h e –1, hPa (W/m2)−1) following the similarity of the processes is introduced. In obtaining the altitude dependencies of investigated paramters, a respective heat transfer equation expressing the rate of heat exchange at the boundary body surface – ambient air is applied. The use of the body thermal state of the established altitude dependencies is discussed. The concept of ’thermal stability’ related to the evaporative resistance parameter h e –1 is introduced. This parameter is assumed as: (1) an indicator of the human body thermal stability and (2) distributor and predictor of environmental influence on the body thermal state.  Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) were used to rapidly generate a dense linkage map for pinyon pine (Pinus edulis). The map population consisted of 40 megagametophytes derived from one tree at Sunset Crater, Arizona. A total of 78 primer combinations, each with three to five selective nucleotides, amplified 542 polymorphic markers. Of these, 33 markers showed significant deviation from the expected Mendelian genotypic segregation ratio of 1 : 1, and 164 showed complete linkage with another marker. This resulted in 338 unique markers mapping to 25 linkage groups, each of which ranged from 2 to 22 markers, averaging 80 centiMorgans (cM) in size and covering 2,012 cM (2,200 cM with the inclusion of 25 cM for each of 7 unlinked markers). Pairwise linkage values gave a genome size estimate of 2,390 cM, suggesting comprehensive coverage of the genome. A search for subsets of primer combinations giving the best map coverage found 10 primer combinations which together marked 72% of the linkage map to within 10 cM; an additional 10 primer combinations increased this percentage to 85%. Our map represents an initial step towards the identification of quantitative trait loci associated with pest resistance and water stress in pinyons and will further allow us to examine introgression rates between P. edulis and P. californiarum. The purpose of this present study was to compare the physiological effects of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the fabrics investigated in exercising and resting subjects at an ambient temperature of 30°C and a relative humidity of 50% with and without wind. Three kinds of clothing ensemble were tested: wool and cotton blend with high moisture regain (A), 100% cotton with intermediate moisture regain (B), 100% polyester clothing with low moisture regain (C). The experiments were performed using seven young adult women as subjects. They comprised six repeated periods of 10-min exercise on a cycle ergometer at an intensity of 40% maximal oxygen uptake followed by 5 min of rest (20 min for the last rest). The experiments comprised two sessions. During session I (first three repetitions of exercise and rest) the subjects were exposed to an indifferent wind velocity and during session II (last three repetitions of exercise and rest) they were exposed to a wind velocity of 1.5 m · s−1. Rectal temperature and skin temperatures at eight sites, pulse rate and clothing microclimate were recorded throughout the whole period. The main findings can be summarized as follows: rectal temperature during session II was kept at a significantly lower level in A than in B and C. Clothing microclimate humidity at the chest was significantly lower in A than in B and C during session II. Skin and clothing microclimate temperatures at the chest were significantly lower in A than in B and C during session II. Pulse rate was significantly higher in C than in A and B during sessions I and II. It was concluded that the hydrophilic properties of the fabrics studied were of physiological significance for reducing heat strain during exercise and rest especially when influenced by wind. Many documented studies have demonstrated the human mortality rate increases during severe heatwaves. There remains a need for further explore ecologically valid cooling strategies to alleviate body heat strain during extreme heatwaves. The main aim of this work was to explore whether intermittent wetting clothing can be served as an ecologically valid cooling strategy to mitigate heat stress on inactive vulnerable populations not having access to air-conditioning during a severe heatwave. Ten young male subjects underwent two 90-min separate trials: a dry clothing trial (i.e., CON) and a wetted clothing cooling trial (i.e., WEC). A set of light summer wear was chosen and intermittently wetted by tap water at intervals of every 30 min. Physiological and perceptual responses of subjects were examined and compared. All trials were performed in a chamber with an air temperature of 43 ± 0.5 °C, RH= 57 ± 5% and an air velocity of 0.15 ± 0.05 m/s (WBGT=37.35 °C). Results demonstrated that WEC, compared with CON, could significantly reduce both the mean skin temperature and the core temperature throughout the 5–90th min and 25–90th min of the trial, respectively (p < 0.05). Besides, WEC could also remarkable reduce local skin temperatures at those body sites covered by wet clothing (p < 0.05). In comparison, no significant difference was found between WEC and CON on perceptual responses. Further, it was also found from PHS simulations that conditions with a partial water vapour pressure ≤ 3.1–3.5 kPa would not induce pronounced core temperature rises at 43 °C. Finally, it may be concluded that intermittent wetting clothing could be served as an ecologically valid cooling strategy to reduce thermophysiological strain of vulnerable populations while seating during humid heatwaves and thereby improve their health and safety.  相似文献

Evaluation of mean skin temperature formulas by infrared thermography   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
To study the reliabiliity of formulas for calculating mean skin temperature (T sk), values were computed by 18 different techniques and were compared with the mean of 10,841 skin temperatures measured by infrared thermography. One hundred whole-body infrared thermograms were scanned in ten resting males while changing the air temperature from 40° C to 4° C. Local, regional average and mean skin temperatures were obtained using an image processing system. The agreement frequency, defined as the percentage of the calculated T sk values which agreed with the corresponding infrared thermographic T sk within ±0.2° C, ranged for with the various formulas from 7% to 80%. In many sites, the local skin temperature did not coincide with the regional average skin temperature. When the local skin temperatures which showed the highest percentage similarity to the regional average skin temperature within ±0.4° C were applied to the formula, the agreement frequency was markedly improved for all formulas. However, the agreement frequency was not affected by changing the weighting factors from specific constants to individually measured values of regional surface area. By applying the physiologically reliable accuracy range of ±0.2° C in the moderate and ±0.4° C in the cool condition, agreement frequencies of at least 95% were observed in formulas involving seven or more skin temperature measurement sites, including the hand and foot. We conclude that calculation of a reliable mean skin temperature must involve more than seven skin temperature measurement sites regardless of ambient temperature. Optimal sites for skin temperature measurement are proposed for various formulas. Received: 2 December 1996 / Accepted: 25 June 1997  相似文献

The influence of ”shinrin-yoku” (forest-air bathing and walking) on blood glucose levels in diabetic patients was examined. Eighty-seven (29 male and 58 female) non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients [61 (SEM 1) years old] participated in the present study. Shinrin-yoku was performed nine times over a period of 6 years. The patients were divided into two parties. They then walked in the forest for 3 km or 6 km according to their physical ability and/or the existence of diabetic complications. The mean blood glucose level after forest walking changed from 179 (SEM 4) mg · 100 ml–1 to 108 (SEM 2) mg · 100 ml–1 (P<0.0001). The level of glycated haemoglobin A1c also decreased from 6.9 (SEM 0.2)% (before the first shinrin-yoku) to 6.5 (SEM 0.1)% (after the last shinrin-yoku; P<0.05). Blood glucose values declined by 74 (SEM 9) mg · 100 ml–1 and 70 (SEM 4) mg · 100 ml–1 after short- and long-distance walking respectively. There was no significant difference between these values. Since the forest environment causes changes in hormonal secretion and autonomic nervous functions, it is presumed that, in addition to the increased calorie consumption and improved insulin sensitivity, walking in a forest environment has other beneficial effects in decreasing blood glucose levels. The UTCI-clothing model   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) was conceived as a thermal index covering the whole climate range from heat to cold. This would be impossible without considering clothing as the interface between the person (here, the physiological model of thermoregulation) and the environment. It was decided to develop a clothing model for this application in which the following three factors were considered: (1) typical dressing behaviour in different temperatures, as observed in the field, resulting in a model of the distribution of clothing over the different body segments in relation to the ambient temperature, (2) the changes in clothing insulation and vapour resistance caused by wind and body movement, and (3) the change in wind speed in relation to the height above ground. The outcome was a clothing model that defines in detail the effective clothing insulation and vapour resistance for each of the thermo-physiological model’s body segments over a wide range of climatic conditions. This paper details this model’s conception and documents its definitions.  相似文献

In the Gastein valley, Austria, radon-rich thermal water and air have been used for decades for the treatment of various diseases. To explore the exposure pathway of radon progeny adsorbed to the skin, progeny activities on the skin of patients exposed to thermal water (in a bathtub) and hot vapour (in a vapour chamber) were measured by alpha spectrometry. Average total alpha activities on the patients’ skin varied from 1.2 to 4.1 Bq/cm2 in the bathtub, and from 1.1 to 2.6 Bq/cm2 in the vapour bath. Water pH-value and ion concentration did affect radon progeny adsorption on the skin, whereas skin greasiness and blood circulation did not. Measurements of the penetration of deposited radon progeny into the skin revealed a roughly exponential activity distribution in the upper layers of the skin. Based on the radon progeny surface activity concentrations and their depth distributions, equivalent doses to different layers of the skin, in particular to the Langerhans cells located in the epidermis, ranged from 0.12 mSv in the thermal bath to 0.33 mSv in the vapour bath, exceeding equivalent doses to the inner organs (kidneys) by inhaled radon and progeny by about a factor 3, except for the lung, which receives the highest doses via inhalation. These results suggest that radon progeny attachment on skin surfaces may play a major role in the dosimetry for both thermal water and hot vapour treatment schemes.  相似文献

To facilitate construction of physical map of the rice genome, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library of IR64 genomic DNA was constructed. It consists of 18 432 clones and contains 3.28 rice genomic equivalents. The insert size ranged from 37 to 364 kb with an average of 107 kb. We used 31 RFLP markers on chromosome 4 to screen the library by colony hybridization. Sixty eight positive clones were identified with 2.2 positive clones per RFLP marker. The positive clones were analyzed to generate 29 contigs whose sizes ranged from 50 to 384 kb with an average of 145.6 kb. Chromosome walking was initiated for ten contigs linked to resistance genes. Thirty eight BAC clones were obtained and two contigs were integrated. Altogether, they covered 5.65 Mb (15.1%) of chromosome 4. These contigs may be used as landmarks for physical mapping of chromosome 4, and as starting points for chromosome walking towards the map-based cloning of disease resistance genes which were located nearby.  Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.] is a warm-season grass used for food, feed, fodder and forage, primarily in countries of Africa and India but grown around the world. The two most-destructive diseases to pearl millet in the United States are rust (caused by Puccinia substriata var. indica) and pyricularia leaf spot (caused by Pyricularia grisea). Genes for disease resistance to both pathogens have been transferred into agronomically acceptable forage and grain cultivars. A study was undertaken to identify molecular markers for three rust loci and one pyricularia resistance locus. Three segregating populations were screened for RAPDs using random decamer primers and for RFLPs using a core set of probes detecting single-copy markers on the pearl millet map. The rust resistance gene Rr 1 from the pearl millet subspecies P. glaucum ssp. monodii was linked 8.5 cM from the RAPD OP-G8350. The linkage of two RFLP markers, Xpsm108 (15.5 cM) and Xpsm174 (17.7 cM), placed the Rr 1 gene on linkage-group 3 of the pearl millet map. Rust resistance genes from both Tift 89D2 and ICMP 83506 were placed on linkage-group 4 by determining genetic linkage to the RFLP marker Xpsm716 (4.9 and 0.0 cM, respectively). Resistance in ICMP 83506 was also linked to the RFLP marker Xpsm306 (10.0 cM), while resistance in Tift 89D2 was linked to RAPD markers OP-K19350 (8.8 cM) and OP-O8350 (19.6 cM). Fragments from OP-K19 and OP-O8 in the ICMP 83506 population, and Xpsm306 in the Tift 89D2 population, were monomorphic. Only one RAPD marker (OP-D11700, 5.6 cM) was linked to pyricularia leaf spot resistance. Attempts to detect polymorphisms with rice RFLP probes linked to rice blast resistance (Pyricularia oryzae; syn=P. grisea) were unsuccessful.  Dormant scions of ‘Bing’ were exposed to 1–2.5 krad of gamma radiation in order to induce useful mutations. The main buds were excised and the scions grafted to allow the growth of accessory buds into primary (V1) shoots. The frequency and types of mutations on secondary (V2) populations are described. In a population of 3324 V2 shoots, the overall mutation frequency was 6.4%: 4.2% partial, 1.6% total and 0.3% growth-reduced mutants were identified. The experiment was repeated using 3 krad- and 4 krad-fractionated doses in water. Differences in mutation frequency at 3 krad and 4 krad were not significant. Of 2562 surviving V2 shoots derived from the irradiation of accessory buds of both standard and V1 shoots, the overall mutation frequency was 3.3%: 1.7% were partial-leaf mutants, 1.0% were total-leaf mutants, and 0.54% were growth-reduced mutants. For maximum mutation rate with adequate survival we suggest acute irradiation of accessory buds in air at dosages approximating LD50 (2.75–3 krad). A larger mutant sector was present in V1 shoots derived from accessory buds than those from main buds as revealed by the higher number of total mutant repeats in the families. The doubly labelled water (DLW) method for measuring CO2 production has recently been the subject of much interest since no other technique gives integrated values for CO2 production over long periods by free-living subjects. The importance of evaporative water loss and fractionation factors to the calculation of CO2 production using this technique is described. Present methods of estimating evaporative water loss and the use of fractionation factors are summarized together with a discussion of their limitations. A novel technique is proposed whereby water labelled with three isotopes can be used to measure evaporative water loss and CO2 production in completely free-living subjects, and the feasibility of the method is tested in simulations using experimental data. This technique has three advantages over existing methods of estimating evaporative water loss: (1) it can be used in completely free-living subjects without any additional experimental procedures (e.g. water-balance studies or physical trapping of water vapour); (2) it gives a direct estimate of fractionated evaporative water loss in each subject, since non-fractionated water lost as vapour is automatically compensated for; and (3) the routes of water loss do not have to be known. The appropriate calculations are presented together with a discussion of the difficulties of measuring oxygen-17 by mass spectrometry. It is estimated that the maximum theoretical error on calculated CO2 production is +/- 0.3%. Practical ways of achieving this theoretical level of accuracy are suggested. We conclude that the proposed technique will allow correction for evaporative water loss to be made more exactly, thereby increasing the accuracy of the heavy water technique for measuring CO2 production in free-living subjects.  相似文献

When protective clothing is worn that restricts evaporative heat loss, it is not valid to assume that the higher sweat rates associated with improvements in aerobic fitness will increase heat tolerance. An initial study compared thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses to both compensable and uncompensable heat stress before and after 8 weeks of endurance training in previously sedentary males. Despite a 15% improvement in VO2peak, and lower heart rates and rectal temperature (T(re)) responses while wearing combat clothing, no changes were noted when subjects wore a protective clothing ensemble. Tolerance times were unchanged at approximately 50 min. A subsequent short-term training model that used daily 1-h exercise sessions for 2 weeks also failed to show any benefit when the protective clothing was worn in the heat. Cross-sectional comparisons between groups of high and low aerobic fitness, however, have revealed that a high aerobic fitness is associated with extended tolerance time when the protective clothing is worn. The longer tolerance time is a function of both a lower starting T(re) and a higher T(re) tolerated at exhaustion. Improvements in cardiovascular function with long-term training may allow higher core temperatures to be reached prior to exhaustion. Conversely, elevations in core temperature that occur with normal training sessions may familiarize the more fit subjects to the discomforts of exercise in the heat. Other factors such as differences in body fatness may account for a faster increase in tissue temperature at a given metabolic rate for less fit individuals.  相似文献

New estimates of global and regional coral reef areas   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Global and regional coral reef area statistics are of considerable value in fields ranging from global environmental change to fisheries to conservation. Although widely quoted, Smith’s 1978 figure of 600 000 km2 is only an approximate calculation. The World Conservation Monitoring Centre has prepared a new estimate of reef coverage by mapping emergent reef crest and very shallow reef systems. These data were rasterised, using 1 km grid squares, as a means of reducing errors arising from variation in scale. Global and regional reef coverages were calculated from the resultant grid. The total global area is estimated at 255 000 km2, considerably lower than many previous estimates. Variation in reef area estimates is, in part, a function of variation in reef definition.  Genetic maps facilitate the study of genome structure and evolution, and the identification of monogenic traits or Mendelian components of quantitative traits. We evaluated 228 RAPD, microsatellite and AFLP markers for linkage analysis in melon (Cucumis melo L.) varieties MR-1 (resistant to Fusarium wilt, powdery and downy mildews) and Ananas Yokneum (AY; susceptible to these diseases) and constructed a detailed genetic map. The mapping population consisted of 66 backcross progenies derived from AY×(MR-1×AY). Despite a relatively low level of polymorphism in the species, AFLP markers were found to be more efficient in mapping the melon genome than RAPD or microsatellite markers. The map contains 197 AFLPs, six RAPDs and one microsatellite marker assigned to 14 major and six minor linkage groups, and covers 1942 cM with the average distance between adjacent markers of approximately 10 cM. The maximum distance allowed between markers is 27.5 cM. About 11% of the intervals (20 out of 173) are over 20 cM (but less than 27.5 cM). The map has immediate utility for identifying markers linked to disease resistance genes that are suitable for marker-assisted breeding. The use of microsatellite markers for integration with other maps is also discussed. Received: 12 March 1997 / Accepted: 20 May 1997  相似文献

Piccardi and Capel-Boute have previously indicated a number of physical parameters which describe the physico-chemical evolution of pure water over time. Electrical conductivity is such a parameter. Experiments have been carried out in order to investigate correlations between the conductivity of pure water and various parameters. Based earlier work by Halla and Novotny we used an electrical voltage (5 V) of weak frequency (3.4 KHz) to ”activate” water. Results have been positive, the stimulus producing an increase of 10% in electrical conductivity. A biomass test with this water confirmed the observations of Violet that such water produced an increase in vegetation. Measurements of the electrical conductivity of pure water over time showed that ”external phenomena” acted upon control water but did not act upon ”activated” water. In a third series of experiments, water from the same source was put in two bottles: the first was a screened one and the second was a normal one. In this experiment, the influence of variations in electrical atmospheric fields on variations in the electrical conductivity of pure water was confirmed.  The present study investigates the effect on thympanic temperature of exposure to different light intensities for several hours during the daytime. Nine healthy young adult volunteers (two male, seven female) were exposed to bright light of 4000 lx or dim light of 100 lx during the daytime from 0930 to 1800 hours; the light condition was then kept at 100 lx for a further hour. Tympanic temperature was measured continuously at a neutral condition (28° C, 60% relative humidity) from 1000 to 1800 hours. Urinary samples were collected from 1100 to 1900 hours every 2 h, and melatonin excretion rate was measured by enzyme immunoassay. Of nine subjects, six showed clearly lower tympanic temperatures in the bright compared with the dim condition from 1400 to 1800 hours. Average tympanic temperatures were significantly lower in the bright than in the dim condition from 1645 to 1800 hours. Melatonin excretion rate tended to be higher in the bright than in the dim condition. It was concluded that exposure to bright light of 4000 lx during the daytime for several hours could reduce tympanic temperature, compared with that measured in dim light of 100 lx.
