Grayling Thymallus thymallus in Lake Aursjøen, Norway, showed a remarkably uniform growth pattern throughout life, whereas brown trout Salmo trutta showed far more variation. In addition, a narrower age-length interval of maturation was found in grayling. The restricted life history variation in grayling is discussed and it is suggested that all grayling of Lake Aursjøen experience similar environmental conditions as juveniles, which induces low phenotypic variation. In contrast the existence of several spawning populations, adapted to as many as 28 different tributaries, may have created large life history variation in Aursjøen trout. Logistic models revealed that both age and length had significant, simultaneous effects on the maturation of both species. Furthermore, the sexes of trout differed in maturation patterns, i.e. males matured earlier and at smaller sizes than female conspecifics, but no difference was found between the sexes of grayling. In addition, larger sex-specific growth differences were found in trout. An absence of early maturing males in grayling and their presence in trout is discussed as a possible explanation of the restricted life history variation found between sexes of grayling. Male grayling experienced a larger mortality rate than did females, whereas no such differences were found in trout. It is suggested that grayling males invest more in reproduction than do females, due primarily to large investments in breeding behaviour. The equal mortality rates found for both sexes of trout, albeit males starting to spawn earlier than females, is probably explained by a female-selective fishing mortality.  相似文献

In anuran amphibians, age- and size-related life-history traits vary along latitudinal and altiudinal gradients. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that altitudinal and latitudinal effects cause similar responses by assessing demographic life-history traits in nine Bufo calamita populations inhabiting elevations from sea level to 2270 m. Skeletochronologically determined age at maturity and longevity increased at elevations exceeding 2000 m, but female potential reproductive lifespan (PRLS) did not increase with altitude, as it did with latitude. Integrating the available evidence, it was found that lifetime fecundity of natterjacks decreased at the upper altitudinal range because PRLS was about the same as in lowland populations but females were smaller. In contrast, small size of northern females was compensated for by increased PRLS which minimised latitudinal variation of lifetime fecundity. Thus, this study provides evidence that altitudinal effects on life-history traits do not mimic latitudinal effects. Life-history trait variation along the altitudinal gradient seems to respond directly to the shortening of the annual activity period. As there is no evidence for increasing mortality in highland populations, reduced lifetime fecundity may be the ultimate reason for the natterjacks' inability to colonise elevations exceeding 2500 m.  相似文献

Geographic body size variation was analysed in males and females of 19 populations of the South American grasshopper Dichroplus vittatus Bruner spanning 20 degrees of latitude and 2700 m of altitude. Using mean and maximum body length of each sex and factors obtained from principal components analyses of six morphometric linear characters it was shown that D. vittatus followed the converse to Bergmann's rule latitudinally but not altitudinally where no significant trends were observed. For males, variability of body size increased with latitude but not with altitude. Both types of trends were significantly correlated with mean annual temperature and minimum annual temperature (positive correlations), and two estimators of seasonality, the coefficients of variation of mean annual temperature (negative) and mean annual precipitation (positive). Some allometric relationships also showed geographic variation. It is suggested that the observed decrease in size with latitude together with the increase in morphological variability is a consequence of a number of factors: the shortening of the growing season southwards; the increasing seasonality and climatic unpredictability; and the fact that the species exhibits protandry which contributes to smaller and more variable size in males and smaller but more constant body size in females.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of the R. lemmingii population of the River Huebra, Duero basin are analysed. Females dominated older age classes and lived up to 6 years (5+) while males only reached 5 years (4+). The growing season extended from April to September; growth rates were similar for both sexes. 0+ fish condition increased during their first summer and spring. In older fish, condition cycle was related to gonad development and showed some differences between sexes. The number of females reaching maturity at age 1 + almost doubled that of males; females also matured at smaller size. Both fecundity and egg size increased with female length: mean egg counts varied between 974 for 1 + individuals and an estimated 10491 for 5+ fish. Eggs were produced as a single batch, but were released fractionally during April and May.  相似文献

The ultimate body size that an individual fish achieves can be a function both of direct effects of growth or indirect effects associated with the timing of sexual maturation (and associated energetic tradeoffs). These alternatives are often invoked to explain variation in body size within and among fish populations, but have rarely been considered simultaneously. We assessed how resource availability and timing of maturation interact to influence individual body size of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). Resource availability (high and low food) and the social structure of the population (presence or absence of large, mature males) were varied in experimental ponds. Food ration affected growth (larger fish in the high food treatments) and the social structure of the population affected timing of maturation (early maturation of males in the absence of large males). Treatment effects, however, were sex-specific; males responded to the social structure of the population and females were more responsive to resource availability. We also found individuals that became sexually mature were smaller than those that remained immature, although results were sex-specific and resource dependent. For males, individuals that matured were smaller when resources were limited; mature and immature females showed no difference in body size regardless of food ration. We show that both resource availability and the processes that control timing of maturation interact in sex-specific ways to influence body size of bluegill. These results suggest that a more robust explanation for variable body size requires consideration of sex-specific interactions between ecological (food and growth) and evolutionary (timing of maturation) mechanisms.  相似文献

In invertebrates, the size at maturation is considered to be important for adult fitness. In the wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata, however, it is only females that clearly benefit of larger size through augmented egg production, while male mating success is determined by display activity not related to size. Thus, we can expect conflicting growth patterns for the sexes. Additionally, populations differ greatly in adult size: individuals from dry habitats are smaller than those from wet habitats. To study the sexual differences in reaction norms of growth, we reared spiderlings from seven populations at two food levels under controlled laboratory conditions and compared size at sexual maturity. The shapes of reaction norms for adult size differed between the sexes. In females, the reaction norms were parallel, but individuals from dry habitats tended to grow larger at the given food levels. In males, there was a significant interaction between food level and population without any consistent differences between populations. Maturation time was a plastic character in both sexes with no genetic differences among populations. However, females on low food level matured later and significantly smaller in size than those on high food level. Males also matured later on low food level, but they were nearly of the same size as males that received more food. Female growth patterns reflected the strong selection for large size at maturity. However, the patterns for males were highly variable, which could be explained by the weak overall selection on male size, which means that any environmental factors can affect male growing patterns. 1. Reproductive traits were studied in seven wild populations of resident brown trout in Spain. We examined whether growth, and certain environmental conditions such as water temperature or food abundance, could explain interpopulation variation in the reproductive characters.
2. The results indicated that nearby populations subjected to a wide variation in environmental conditions exhibited a similar reproductive performance.
3. Age distributions and sex ratios were not significantly different among populations. Age ranged from 0+ to 4+ years but the populations were dominated by the 0+ to 2+ groups. In all rivers females matured at age 2+ as opposed to age 1+ and 2+ for males. Mean length at the end of the growth period differed significantly among populations. However, annual growth rate was similar among rivers and was not significantly correlated with either biomass of the benthos or water temperature during the growth season.
4. Reproductive effort, body condition, fecundity and egg size did not correlate significantly with either the abundance of benthic invertebrates or water temperature. Once the effect of body length on both egg size and number was removed, a significant negative correlation was found between these two traits among populations.  相似文献

(1) The individuals in the densely populated stock of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., living in Lake Lane and Stranda River, are small, mature at an early age, and have a relatively short life span. Such a demographic strategy appears favourable for populations having a large, but physically unstable spawning and nursery area, intense competition for food, and little vertebrate predation except for human exploitation. (2) For females, the age of sexual maturation appears largely dependent on growth-rate, size, and survival-rate of the fish. Males do not appear to have the advantage of a corresponding large body size. They mature when smaller and at more varying ages than the females, although the two sexes have almost identical growth-rates. (3) Sexually mature fish have higher condition coefficients than immature ones, which is probably an adaptation to ensure gonadal development and enhance the prospect of reproductive success. (4) Mortality appears to be largely dependent on the age when the fish achieve sexual maturation. Most individuals seem to die after their first spawning season. Females show a delay of one year in their sexual maturation relative to males. This adaptation gives protection to the females.  相似文献

Brown trout in Lake Femund migrated from the nursery streams mainly at 2 years old, but ranging between 1 and 8 years. Brown trout switched to piscivory from 3 years onwards, and a body length of 17·5 cm, according to back calculation from scales. Fast growers switched to piscivory at a younger age and smaller size than slow growers. The most slow-growing trout switched to fish feeding at 9 years old and a mean body length of 36 cm. The growth of the invertebrate feeders was almost rectilinear to c. 45 cm and 11 years of age. Switching to a fish diet induced increased growth rates. Age at sexual maturity increased with the age at which the fish became piscivorous. The invertebrate feeders matured at an age similar to that of the most fast growing piscivorous trout. The mortality rate of sub-adults and adults did not differ significantly between fish and invertebrate feeding trout. Longevity of piscivorous trout was estimated at 11 years and of invertebrate feeders at 10 years.  相似文献

Samples of the foxfish Bodianus frenchii, collected over reefs on the lower west and south coasts of Western Australia, contained individuals ranging up to 78 years old. Although B. frenchii is far smaller than many other species within the Labridae, its maximum age is the greatest yet recorded for this highly speciose family and, together with Achoerodus gouldii, provides an example of a temperate hypsigenyine with exceptional longevity. Length and age compositions of females and males and the histological characteristics of gonads of a wide length range of individuals demonstrated that B. frenchii is a protogynous hermaphrodite. Furthermore, as, on both coasts, the length of the smallest male was greater than that at which all females had become mature, B. frenchii is a monandric protogynous hermaphrodite, i.e. all of its males are derived from functional females. Attainment of maturity by females is related more to length than age, whereas the reverse is true for sex change. On the basis of Schnute growth equations and length‐to‐body mass regression equations, the predicted length at age and body mass at length of fish on the south coast were greater than those on the west coast throughout life. Although B. frenchii spawns daily during the main spawning season, which extends from October to February on both coasts, its fecundity at any given length is substantially greater on the south than on the west coast. The more rapid growth of juveniles and earlier attainment of maturity by B. frenchii on the south coast than on the warmer west coast, together with maturation at a similar size on both coasts, run counter to the trends observed in many species and certain ecological theories regarding the relationships between life‐cycle traits and latitude and temperature. The attainment by B. frenchii of a larger body length at age, of greater body mass at length and of greater fecundity at both length and body mass in fish on the south than on the west coast strongly suggests that conditions on the former, cooler coast are more favourable for this labrid, which belongs to a sub‐genus whose other species typically live in cool, deep, temperate waters.  相似文献

An end-of-season penalty, with late-maturing individuals being smaller than early-maturing individuals, has been observed in a variety of univoltine terrestrial arthropods. The current study extends these observations, utilizing multiple populations of a single sexually dimorphic species to examine the ecological correlates and fitness consequences of late maturation at a small size. The orb-weaving spider, Nephila clavipes, inhabits a broad range of habitats that vary from mild to strong seasonality. Because males mature several instars earlier than females, they can reach maturity much earlier in the growing season. Within a cohort, I found that female size at maturity was negatively correlated with timing of maturation in strongly seasonal sites. At a less seasonal site, there was no correlation between female size and timing of maturation within a cohort. In most populations studied, male size was not correlated with the timing of maturation within a cohort. Within populations in strongly seasonal sites, late-maturing females had reduced fecundity. The probability of copulation, survivorship from maturity to first clutch, clutch size relative to female size, and the number of possible clutches were all reduced with delayed maturation. The probability of pre-reproductive death for late-maturing females was strongly affected by stochasticity in the timing of the end of the growing season. The probability that a fish matures at a certain age and length (the so‐called probabilistic maturation reaction norm, PMRN) was analysed for a European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus species complex population living in the Austrian pre‐alpine Lake Irrsee. The present study investigated altitudinal variation in sexual size dimorphism of a Tibetan frog Nanorana parkeri. Size dimorphism was female‐biased in all populations, although this bias became less at higher altitudes because of a steeper altitudinal decrease in female size than male size. Operational sex ratios, an indicator of the opportunity for sexual selection on larger males, changed independently of altitude. Clutch volume, an indicator of the strength of fecundity selection on larger females, was positively with female size, and tended to decrease approaching high altitudes. Females lived longer and grew more slowly than males, and the mean age in both sexes increased and growth rate decreased altitudinally, although the changes were more rapid in females than males. These results suggest that, relative to males, females (i.e. the sex that typically bears greater reproductive costs and experiences stronger directional selection for larger size to take fecundity advantages) should be more sensitive to environments, attaining a larger size via enhancing growth under favourable lower‐latitude conditions but a smaller size as a result of retarding growth when conditions become harsher at higher altitudes. SUMMARY. 1. The midsummer succession of cladoceran zooplankton in Lake Texoma was examined by demographic characterization of lake populations and a parallel set of life table experiments in which the dominant cladoceran species were raised on naturally occurring lake phytoplankton at lake temperatures. Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum occurred throughout the study period (mid June-mid August 1981) but Daphnia parvula, D. galeata mendotae and Ceriodaphnia lacustris were rarely detected after 15 July.
2. Analyses of size structure and size-specific fecundity of the cladoceran populations showed that (1) size structure shifted to smaller individuals in mid July, (2) size-specific fecundity was relatively constant in the smaller size classes and was constant or declined in larger females of each species, and (3) size at maturation did not vary significantly during the study of any population.
3. Individual growth rates of the two Daphnia species and Ceriodaphnia in the life table experiments were significantly lower in mid July when populations were declining and when size structure of each population was more dominated by smaller Individuals. The reduction in individual growth rates was short-lived in the life table experiments; growth rates returned to pre-decline levels by the end of July.
4. Two effects of temporary reductions in individual growth rates when size-specific fecundity and size at maturation are constant are (1) that size structure is temporarily shifted to smaller individuals, and (2) the potential rate of population growth is reduced because of delays in reproduction. Because data on size structure and size-specific fecundity are commonly used to evaluate the relative effects of predators and resource changes on populations it is noteworthy that erroneous conclusions about the mechanism of population decline may be reached when individual growth rates vary.  相似文献

Brown trout of German origin were introduced into Patagonian National Parks in 1905, where they acclimatized and underwent population expansion endangering populations of native species like Galaxiidae. Spawning adults of two populations were sampled in 2004. Their age, length-at-age and migratory behaviour were assessed from scale samples, as well as their variation at the coding LDH-C1* and eight non coding microsatellite loci. Between-population differentiation for life history (spawning time, migratory behaviour, length and weight at age) and reduced genetic variation were revealed. Based on genetic variation, effective population size smaller than 50 individuals has been estimated for the founder stock, and its German origin has been genetically traced. Flexibility in migratory behaviour and spawning time were identified as key factors conferring competitive advantage on those brown trout populations.  相似文献

Aims To test the magnitude and direction of the effects of large‐scale environmental factors (latitude and habitat type: lotic or lentic) on the intraspecific variations in multiple life‐history traits, across multiple European freshwater fish species. To test the relevance of defining species traits by quantifying the magnitude of interspecific vs. intraspecific variability in traits. Location Europe. Methods We obtained estimates of 11 fish traits from published sources for 1089 populations of 25 European freshwater fish species. Traits were: longevity, maximal length, growth rate, asymptotic length, mortality rate, age and length at maturation, fecundity, egg size, gonadosomatic index, and length of breeding season. We described population habitats by latitude and habitat type (lotic or lentic), when available. For each species we tested the combined effect of latitude and habitat type on the intraspecific variation of each trait using analysis of covariance (ancova ). We compared the intraspecific variation in traits with the variation between species using an analysis of variance (anova ) for each trait, all species pooled. Results We found a consistent effect in direction of latitude on six traits, but we showed that this effect is not always significant across species. Higher‐latitude populations often grew more slowly, matured later, had a longer life span and a higher maximal and asymptotic length, and allocated more energy to reproduction than populations at lower latitudes. By contrast, we noted only a slight effect of habitat type on the intraspecific variation in traits, except for Salmo trutta. All traits varied significantly between species. However, traits such as growth rate, mortality rate and length of breeding season varied more between populations than between species, whereas fecundity and traits associated with body length varied more between species. Main conclusions Latitude, in contrast to habitat type, is an important factor influencing several traits of geographically widely dispersed populations of multiple European freshwater fish species. Species traits that vary more between species than between populations are attractive variables for understanding and predicting the responses of stream fish communities to their environment.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Brown trout ( Salmo trutta) life history and habitat use were studied in two Norwegian rivers: the Vosso river system, western Norway, and the Søre Osa, eastern Norway.
2. Age-groups were partly segregated in feeding habitats, the youngest fish living mainly in running water and in the littoral zone of lakes, the older fish also exploiting pelagic waters and deeper epibenthic habitats. In a population with free access to and from the sea, some individuals smoltified and became sea-run migrants, performing yearly migrations to the coastal sea, whereas others stayed as freshwater residents throughout their entire life span.
3. Within local populations, females were larger and less variable in size than males. This was partly because females matured at an older age than males, partly because the sexes tended to exploit feeding habitats with different food and growth Conditions. Within age-groups, females were more pelagic and migrated more than males, whereas males were more confined to running water and epibenthic areas than females. In the pelagic zone, males were more abundant in near-surface water, and females more abundant in deeper areas. When exploiting the same feeding areas, the two sexes grew at the same rate. There therefore appears to be a connection between feeding habitat and the reproductive ecology of brown trout.  相似文献

New data on fecundity, sex ratio in different size groups, and the rate of sexual maturation of shortspine thornyhead Sebastolobus alascanus in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean are provided. Individual absolute fecundity of the studied females varies in the range of 175 000–821000 (on average, 392500) eggs. In Pacific waters off the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka, among individuals with a length to 41 cm, males dominate; in size groups of 42–59 cm, sex ratio is almost equal; among larger fish, females prevail. In the western part of the Bering Sea among analyzed fish with a length to 44 cm, sex ratio is almost equal; among larger individuals, females dominate. Half of males and females of shortspine thornyhead off the eastern coast of the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka mature at a length of approximately 41 cm that can be recommended as a commercial size for the given species in this area.  相似文献

Anadromous trout Salmo trutta exhibits sexual size dimorphism (SSD); females were larger than males in populations where male mean total length (LT) at maturity was below 49 cm and females were smaller than males when mean male LT was above 49 cm, the slope of the regression of female on male LT was 0·59. In streams with mean annual discharge below 41 m3 s?1, flow added significantly to a model with SSD as the dependent variable and male mean LT at maturity as the first predictor variable. There was a slight increase in SSD with increasing latitude, which may result from an increase in male size with increasing latitude.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Variation in size (wing length) of females and males within a population of Aedes punctor (Kirby) at emergence was recorded in northern Britain during 1984 and 1985.
2. Wing length correlated well with body dry weight, confirming its usefulness as a measure of body size. In 1984, but not in 1985, mean size decreased significantly as emergence progressed.
3. The size of host-seeking females caught at human bait varied seasonally. This was partly accounted for by size variation during emergence.
4. Of females which fed to repletion, the largest spent least time in contact with the host.
5. In the laboratory, wing length correlated well with potential fecundity (number of ovarioles) and less well with actual fecundity (number of matured follicles) after feeding on human blood.
6. In the field, larger females were more successful at locating hosts, developed more egg clutches in a lifetime and generally lived longer than did smaller ones. Larger females appear to enjoy greater reproductive success than do smaller females.  相似文献
