Healthy seed tubers and seed tubers with gangrene or inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani to induce stem canker were planted 38 or 76 cm apart or alternately at 38 cm spacing in 2-row (1985) or 4-row (1986) plots at Rothamsted.
At 38 cm spacing, stem canker decreased yield by 5% and 8% respectively in 1985 and 1986 and gangrene by 5% and 14%, but usually by twice these amounts when seed was spaced at 76 cm. In all experiments, yields from plots with alternate healthy and inoculated seed (50% disease) were similar to yields from healthy seed, although within these mixed populations individual plant yields from healthy seed were larger and those from diseased seed were smaller than from plots of healthy or inoculated seed respectively. Samples in August showed a similar effect on fresh weight of foliage.
Disease usually decreased the number of stemdplant but in 1985 gangrene increased stem numbers and probably accounted for small amounts of compensatory growth from neighbouring healthy plants.  相似文献

Seed tubers of cvs Désirée and Pentland Crown with different severities of black dot were planted in 1988 and 1989 at Rothamsted in fields in 4– or 7-course rotations, respectively. Tubers treated with prochloraz (1988) or imazalil (1989) were planted in some plots, and in others Colletotrichum coccodes inoculum was added to the soil at planting. In further experiments at Mepal, Cambridgeshire in 1989 and 1990 and at Rothamsted in 1990 on sites where potatoes had not been grown for more than 15 years, large amounts of inoculum were added to the soil around disease-free seed tubers of two (1989) or three (1990) cultivars at planting. In all experiments plants were sampled during the season and the effects of treatments on disease development, growth and yield were recorded. Disease on roots, stem bases and tubers was found early in the season and was more severe on Désirée than on Pentland Crown plants from fields in 4– or 7-course rotations. Severity increased throughout the season and with increasing amounts of disease on the seed tubers, especially with Desiree. Disease was also found on plants from disease-free tubers and was more severe in 1988 than 1989. At harvest, black dot on tubers was significantly more severe from severely affected than from disease-free seed, and was most severe where inoculum, especially large amounts, had been added at planting. Fungicide treatment decreased disease early in the season but had no effect on tuber infection at harvest. In 1989 the weight loss of seed tubers during sprouting increased with increasing amounts of black dot, but the disease had little effect on plant size through the season. At harvest the yield of ware tubers (>50 mm) decreased with severe disease but total tuber yields were not significantly affected. However, at harvest in 1988 severely affected seed yielded significantly less than healthy seed. Plants grown from mini-tubers were free from disease on sites where potatoes had not been grown for at least 15 years. Inoculum applied at planting caused severe disease on all cultivars in both years, whereas disease was slight on uninoculated plants. Inoculated plants senesced early at Mepal in 1990, but there were no significant differences in total tuber yield in any experiment. However, yields of ware tubers (>50 mm) were sometimes decreased and the total tuber number per plant increased.  相似文献

To assess the effects of cutting phenology on early growth performance of three willow clones grown under different weed treatments and planting dates, freshly harvested (non-dormant) and cold-stored (dormant) cuttings from willow clone Tora, Jorr, and Olof were planted in bucket experiment outdoors in central Sweden on five planting dates (May–June 2013) with or without a model weed (spring barley). Non-dormant cuttings sprouted faster than dormant cuttings when planted early in the season. For cuttings planted later in the season, bud sprouting was affected only by willow clone. Aboveground biomass production was affected by cutting phenology, planting date, clone, and weed treatment. When planted on May 3 and May 10, biomass produced from non-dormant and dormant cuttings did not differ, while willows grown from dormant cuttings produced 59% more aboveground biomass than willows grown from non-dormant cuttings when planted on May 24–June 16. Tora produced on average 12% more biomass than Jorr and Olof, and weed competition reduced aboveground biomass production on average with 36%. The ability of willow to suppress weeds (WSA) was 26 (non-dormant cuttings) and 12% (dormant cuttings) higher for willows planted on May 3 compared with WSA of willows grown from cuttings planted later in the season. The ability to tolerate competition from weeds (WT) was 51 and 52% lower for willows grown from non-dormant and dormant cuttings planted late in the season compared with WT of willows planted earlier in the season. We conclude that planting with long-term cold storage of willow cuttings can be replaced with planting freshly harvested cuttings when planting is performed in early season, and that weed competition strongly reduces biomass production. Weed control during the establishment phase is crucial in order to maximize willow biomass production.  相似文献

King Edward and Majestic seed potatoes selected as ‘clean’ (macroscopically symptomless), moderate and severe according to the extent of skin spot were planted in field experiments at Rothamsted between 1964 and 1968. Usually crops from ‘clean’ and moderately infected seed did not differ detectably in growth or yield. Plants from severely infected seed tubers emerged more slowly, had fewer stems and yielded less (King Edward 20 %, Majestic 13 %). Seed infection also affected tuber size distribution; severely infected seed of King Edward yielded almost 4 tons/acre less of 1 1/4-2 1/4 in tubers and Majestic, 1 ton/acre less of these and 2 tons/acre less 2 1/4-3 1/4 in tubers. However, the total yield from diseased seed stocks was only slightly less (King Edward, o-6 ton/acre and Majestic o-8 ton/acre) than the yields from the ‘clean’ tubers selected from them. Seed severely infected by Oospora pustulans often increased infection of the progeny tubers, and usually decreased their infection by Rhizoctonia solani and sometimes by Helmintho-sporium solani. Another series of experiments compared King Edward seed tubers classified according to the number of live eyes showing in March. Seed with one, two, three and more live eyes yielded equally. About half the tubers without live eyes in March eventually produced plants, but late, with few stems and giving only half the yield of seed with three or more live eyes. Surprisingly, the progeny tubers from seed without live eyes were least infected by O. pustulans, R. solani and H. solani. Progenies of King Edward and Majestic seed from a common source grown on seven widely separated farms were infected more in 1963 than in 1964, but in each year infection differed widely between farms. Often where O. pustulans was common, R. solani was scarce and vice versa. By contrast, when King Edward stocks very differently infected by O. pustulans were grown at Rothamsted their progenies were almost uniformly infected by O. pustulans and R. solani.  相似文献

The relationship between time of inoculation with cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) and the growth, seed production and rate of seed transmission of virus in lupin (Lupinus angustifolius cv. Illyarrie) was studied in field-grown plants. Plants inoculated at the seedling stage (2 days post-emergence) showed 45% mortality. Plants infected through the seed were more stunted than plants inoculated at the seedling stage. Plants inoculated up to the mid-vegetative growth stage (58 days post-emergence) yielded ≤ 27% of the dry matter and ≤ 9% of the seed of healthy plants. Late inoculation (114 days post-emergence) did not affect dry matter yield, but reduced seed yield to 75% of that of healthy plants. Rate of seed transmission depended on the time of inoculation of plants. The maximum rate was 24.5% for plants that were inoculated at the mid-vegetative growth stage (58 days post-emergence). However, early inoculation caused a large reduction in seed yield, and it was shown that plants inoculated at the beginning of flowering (94 days post-emergence) produced greater numbers of infected progeny than plants inoculated at earlier or later times. No relationship was observed between seed weight and transmission of CMV. Infectious CMV was recovered from the embryo, but not from the testa. A simple seed transmission model was used to evaluate several hypothetical epidemics and to determine the time of inoculation which results in greatest rates of seed transmission of CMV. For example, when fewer than 73% of plants in a crop become infected with CMV, then the rate of transmission of virus in crop seeds will be greatest when inoculations are at the beginning of flowering.  相似文献

The effects of planting dates 2-3-wk apart on boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), field-level populations, and feeding and oviposition damage to cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., squares and bolls, were studied during 2002 and 2003 in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Squares were 44-56% more abundant in some later planted treatments than in the earlier planted treatments, but mean cumulative numbers of oviposition- and feeding-damaged squares were 2.7 - 4.8-fold greater in some later planted treatments than in earlier treatments. Increased square production in later planted cotton was offset by boll weevil infestations that occurred when squares are most vulnerable and contribute most toward the pest's reproduction. Early planting avoided boll weevil population buildups in the field when large squares were abundant. Lint yields in 2002 did not differ significantly between the planting date treatments, but in 2003, mean yield in the middle treatment was 23% greater than in the early and late-planted treatments. Insecticide sprays in the earliest planted treatment of each year, based on the 10% damaged squares threshold, were >33% and >43% fewer than in the corresponding middle and latest planting treatments, respectively. Delayed planting, relative to the onset of favorable cotton-growing weather, at the field level, even when not applied uniformly on an areawide scale, is more cost-effective than planting too early or too late.  相似文献

Large seed tubers (mean 134 g) and small seed tubers (50 g) of three early and three maincrop potato cultivars, spaced respectively 48 and 30 cm apart within rows, were inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani at planting in 1985 and 1986. All seed of early cultivars was sprouted and maincrop seed was either sprouted or not sprouted. In all cultivars, plant emergence was slower from small than large seed and with both was delayed by inoculation. From 11 wk after planting numbers of stems and tubers and weights of foliage and tubers/m2 were usually similar from small and large seed when not inoculated, but inoculating delayed plant growth and decreased tuber numbers and yield more from small than large seed. Inoculating decreased mean yields from large and small seed of early cultivars at 11 wk by respectively 24% and 31% (Arran Comet), 12% and 18% (Estima) and by 10% and 28% (Wilja) and losses were greatest with saleable sized tubers (3–4 cm). When grown to maturity inoculating decreased yields by 7% (Arran Comet), 5% (Estima) and 14% (Wilja). With maincrop cultivars, yields in October from large and small seed were decreased by respectively 4% and 10% (DCsirke), 9% and 12% (Maris Piper) and by 14% and 22% (Pentland Squire). In all cultivars yields of tubers < 44 mm and 44–70 mm were decreased and, with Pentland Squire, tubers > 82 mm were increased. The incidence of stem canker and of black scurf on progeny tubers was not affected by seed size but in all cultivars the percentage of greened tubers was slightly increased by inoculation.  相似文献

The size advantage hypothesis suggests that natural selection will favor size-dependent sex expression when one sex gains more than the other by being large. But members of a minority sex will also have a higher reproductive value, on average. Thus, an individual's reproductive success depends on the reproductive decisions made by neighboring individuals. As a result, the optimal relationship between size and sex may differ among populations. In Arisaema triphyllum, the probability for an individual to be female increases with size, regardless of the character measured. A reciprocal transplant experiment showed the relationship between size and sexual expression is environmentally plastic. Plants originating from our two study sites became female at a larger average size when grown at one site than when grown at the other. In addition to environmental influence on sex expression, the experiment demonstrated genetic differences in the relationship between size and sex. Plants collected from one site became female at a larger size than those from the other, regardless of where they were grown. Thus, while the environment in which an individual was grown had a substantial influence on its sex expression, populations only a few kilometers apart have genetically different relationships between size and sex.  相似文献

Agriotes obscurus (L.) wireworms assembled in increasing numbers at rows of treated (Agrox DL Plus seed treatment) and untreated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., planted at increasing densities (0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.60 seeds/cm). In treated wheat plots at all planting densities, no wireworm damage to seedlings was apparent, and total wireworms taken in core samples in wheat rows increased according to the asymptotic equation y = B0(1 -e(-Blx)), where B0 is the asymptote, B1 is the slope of the initial rise, and x is the seeding density. The number of dead wireworms in treated plots increased linearly and intercepted the asymptotic models (theoretical point at which 100% mortality of assembled population occurs) at 0.95 seeds/cm on 11 June and 1.14 seeds/cm on 18 June 1996. Untreated wheat at all densities planted had severe wireworm damage and significantly reduced stand. Populations that had assembled at the surviving untreated wheat were fewer than in the treated wheat plots, and although increasing with seeding density, did not follow the asymptotic model. The data suggest that A. obscurus populations can be assembled and killed in fallowed fields in large numbers at treated trap crops of wheat over a 19-d period when planted in rows spaced 1 m apart at a linear seeding density of 1.5 seeds/cm.  相似文献

Two trials are described, each of twenty-five varieties tested during two seasons and the intervening winter storage period. Sets were produced from seed in the-first season and planted to produce mature bulbs in the second. In the second seasons of both trials, the effects of time of planting of sets were also investigated as part of a factorial experiment. In the later trial the effects of set size were also tested. Data are presented of varietal differences in bolting, yield, earliness and of behaviour of the sets in storage. The effects of set size and of late planting on these characteristics are also recorded. Some practical recommendations are made: thus, among those tested, varieties were found which bolted little and gave high yields when grown from sets, but it is emphasized that names of varieties as listed in seedmen's catalogues may not be reliable. Efforts are being made to maintain and improve by selection the most satisfactory of these strains. Late planting of sets is not recommended, for, although bolting was effectively controlled by this means, the yields were much reduced. Plants grown from large sets tended to bolt more than those from small, as has been shown by earlier workers; while on the contrary the yields from large and small sets were on the average alike. Comparing different varieties, the highest gross yields of all were produced from the large sets of non-bolting varieties; but for highest yields of bulbs free from flower stalks small sets should be used and this is advisable for all varieties. During storage the large sets lost less percentage weight than the small but they sprouted much more, and this is considered the more serious defect. The storage data demonstrate an additional disadvantage of late planting, for this involves longer storage and both sprouting and weight losses increase rapidly during late spring.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out in a growth chamber and a naturally lit glasshouse to investigate the influence of seed phosphorus (P) reserves on growth and P uptake by wheat plants (Triticum aestivum cv Krichauff), and their association with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Increased seed P reserves improved plant growth at a range of P supply up to over 100 mg P kg–1 soil. Plants grown from seeds with high P reserves tended to accumulate more P from soil, which was mainly attributed to better root system development. Mycorrhizal colonisation did not significantly affect P uptake of plants grown with low irradiance (in growth chamber). However, in the naturally lit glasshouse, mycorrhizal plants had significantly higher P concentrations than non-mycorrhizal plants. Furthermore, mycorrhizal plants grown from seeds low in P accumulated similar amounts of P compared with those grown from seeds with high P, indicating that mycorrhizal colonisation may overcome the disadvantage of having low seed P reserves in the field.  相似文献

The effects of planting date and growing period of potato cultivars on their efficiency as trap crops for potato cyst nematodes (PCN) were studied. Plots were planted with susceptible or resistant cultivars in April, June and August and these were grown for 5, 6 or 7 wk before removal of the plants by hand lifting. Crops planted in June provided the best overall reductions in PCN population density of up to 95%, with cv. Santé significantly more effective than the other cultivars. Population reductions from the August planting were only slightly less than from planting in June but the tuber yields obtained were much greater: Maris Piper and Maris Bard produced 16.4 and 21.4 t ha-1 respectively, with 37% and 43% respectively, of a size useful for canning (i.e. between 20 and 40 mm diameter).  相似文献

The response of an autumn-sown determinate selection, 858 , to different plant distribution patterns was examined in field trials during the two seasons 1985/86 and 1986/87 at the University of Nottingham. Plants were sown at two densities (20 and 40 plants per m2) and at three different row widths (11.9, 23.8 and 47.6 cm) in the autumn of each season. Plant numbers and combined yields were greater in 1986/87 than in 1985/86. Grain yield was unaffected by differences in inter-row spacing and this was ascribed to the early attainment of complete ground cover even when plants were grown in widely spaced rows. Yield was most strongly correlated with seed numbers per m2. An examination of yield on a per plant basis suggested that narrow inter-row spacings were more productive at low plant densities, while yield per plant was greater at higher densities if the crop was grown on wider inter-row spacings. It was concluded that autumn-sown determinate forms of faba bean were able to compensate for large changes in plant distribution and consequently yield was unaffected.  相似文献

Cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants were grown in irrigated field plots over red, green or white soil covers (mulches). The far-red (FR) to red (R) light ratios were higher in upwardly reflected light over the red and green surfaces than in incoming sunlight. Plants that grew over the white mulches received higher photosynhetic photon flux (PPF), but the reflected FR/R ratio did not differ significantly from that in incoming sunlight. At five weeks after emergence, seedling stern lengths were significantly longer over red and green than over white surfaces. At maturity, plants that had grown over the red and green surfaces had longer stems, larger shoots, more bolls (fruit), more seed cotton, and longer fibers than plants grown over the white surfaces even though those grown over the white surfaces had received more reflected photosynthetic light during growth and development.  相似文献

In prairie restoration, use of seeds from nonlocal sources has been of concern to restorationists. We examined the specificity between vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi obtained from a single location and little bluestem obtained from three localities. Seed was obtained from three sources: (1) a commercial seed supplier in Nebraska, (2) Sand Ridge State Forest (SRSF), Mason County, Illinois, the site from which the experimental soil containing the mycorrhizal inoculum was obtained, and (3) Sand Prairie Scrub Oak Nature Preserve (SPSO), 32 km southwest of SRSF. Plants were grown in three substrates: (1) autoclaved soil, (2) autoclaved soil to which a mycorrhizal fungal-free sieving of nonautoclaved soil was added, and (3) nonautoclaved soil. All plants grown in nonautoclaved soil were colonized by mycorrhizal fungi, whereas none of those grown in other substrates were colonized. Plants grown from SRSF seeds produced significantly (p < 0.05) more biomass than those grown from Nebraska seeds (X?± SE, SRSF = 0.54 ± 0.04 g, SPSO = 0.49 ± 0.03 g, Nebraska = 0.37 ± 0.03 g). Plants grown in nonautoclaved soil, regardless of seed source, produced less biomass (0.27 ± 0.02 g) than plants grown in autoclaved soil (0.58 ± 0.03 g) or autoclaved soil plus sievings (0.59 ± 0.03 g). The results provide no clear indication of a host-endophyte specificity. However, the data suggest that the local genotypes of S. scoparium are better adapted to their native soil environment than are genotypes from other localities.  相似文献

King Edward and Majestic seed tubers, selected as ‘clean’ (macroscopically symptomless), moderate and severe according to the extent of black scurf, were planted in field experiments at Rothamsted between 1964 and 1968. Seed infection sometimes delayed plants emerging but did not affect final plant populations. Crops from severely diseased seed yielded, on average, 7% less than ‘clean’ tubers (King Edward 6–8% less and Majestic 0–20% less). Seed infection affected tuber size distribution; compared with ‘clean’ seed, severely infected King Edward seed yielded slightly more chats (< 1 ½ in, 3.8 cm) and 1.5 ton/acre (3.8 t/ha) less large tubers (2 ¼–3 ¼ in, 5.7–8.3 cm). The effects were similar with Majestic although differences were smaller. However, total yields from diseased stocks (unselected) seldom differed significantly from the ‘clean’ tubers selected from them. Crops from moderately and severely diseased seed had more Corticium on stems and black scurf on tubers and usually less Oospora pustulans than from ‘clean’ seed.  相似文献

Summary The effect of full sunlight, 60%, or 90% attenuated light on photosynthetic rate, growth, leaf morphology, dry weight allocation patterns, phenology, and tolerance to clipping was examined in the glasshouse for steppe populations of the introduced grass, Bromus tectorum. The net photosynthetic response to light for plants grown in shade was comparable to responses for plants grown in full sunlight. Plants grown in full sunlight produced more biomass, tillers and leaves, and allocated a larger proportion of their total production to roots than plants grown in shade. The accumulation of root and shoot biomass over the first two months of seedling growth was primarily responsible for the larger size at harvest of plants grown in full sunlight. Plants grown under 60% and 90% shade flowered an average of 2 and 6 weeks later, respectively, than plants grown in full sunlight. Regrowth after clipping was greater for plants grown in full sunlight compared to those grown in shade. Even a one-time clipping delayed flowering and seed maturation; the older the individual when leaf area was removed, the greater the delay in its phenology. Repeated removal of leaf area was more frequently fatal for plants in shade than in full sunlight. For plants originally grown in full sunlight, regrowth in the dark was greater than for shaded plants and was more closely correlated to non-flowering tiller number than to plant size. This correlation suggests that etiolated regrowth is more likely regulated by the number of functional meristems than by differences in the size of carbohydrate pools. Thus, shading reduces the rate of growth, number of tillers, and ability to replace leaf area lost to herbivory for B. tectorum. These responses, in turn, intensify the effect of competition and defoliation for this grass in forests. B. tectorum is largely restricted to forest gaps at least in part because of its inability to acclimate photosynthetically, the influence of shade on resource allocation, and the role of herbivory in exacerbating these effects.  相似文献

Summary Seed mass and genotypic effects on the growth and reproduction of Oenothera biennis L. over a gradient of intraspecific density were examined in a greenhouse experiment. By using genetically identical seeds from five parental genotypes we were able to examine independently the effects of seed mass and genotype on seedling and adult performance. Seedling size was significantly correlated with seed mass for the first five weeks but had no effect on adult size or reproductive output. In contrast, genotype differences became increasingly apparent with time. In particular, there were striking differences in reproductive output among genotypes. Plants grown from two of the genotypes consistently produced more, but lighter, seeds and a greater proportion flowered at high density than the other three genotypes. In all five genotypes, seed number was much more variable than seed mass across the density gradient. Initial seed mass accounted for a significant proportion of the variation in progeny seed mass, and mean seed mass produced in the greenhouse was positively correlated with mean seed mass of the parent (in the field). This result, together with the observed constancy of seed mass within a genotype across the density gradient, indicates the differences in reproductive output among these genotypes are genetically determined.  相似文献

Thiabendazole, iprodione and benodanil were tested for control of stem canker and black scurf disease of potatoes using seed tubers with or without black scurf planted in soil infested or not with Rhizoctonia solani . Dormant seed tubers were treated with fungicide dusts, dips or sprays and before planting dusts were applied to soil or to sprouts on seed tubers.
Plants grown from seed tubers with black scurf had more stem canker, stolon infection and Thanatephorus cucumeris and progeny tubers had more black scurf than from seed without black scurf. Infesting soil with R. solani increased black scurf but not stem canker or stolon infection.
Fungicide treatment of seed tubers controlled all phases of the disease and sprout and soil treatments also had significant effects. Numbers of tubers in July were usually increased by treatment although by harvest many small tubers (>3 cm) had been resorbed. Fungicide treatment substantially increased yield only when shoot tips were pruned by R. solani .
Regression analyses showed that stolon pruning, Thanatephorus and black scurf were significantly related to stem canker, and numbers of tubers in July but not in September were inversely related to stolon pruning.
The significance of sources of inoculum and the effects of controlling disease on tuber production are discussed in relation to methods of fungicide use.  相似文献

2005 年5 ~6 月,在北京东灵山地区,通过在实验围栏内设置不同深度、间距和大小的埋藏点,研究了花鼠对向日葵种子的发现率。结果表明,花鼠发现埋藏种子的比例随埋藏深度的增加而减少,埋藏深度> 5 cm后,发现比例较低,且不再有明显变化;花鼠发现埋藏种子的比例随埋藏点间距的减小而增加,埋藏点间距<0.5 m后,发现比例较高,且不再有明显变化;花鼠发现埋藏种子的比例随着埋藏点增大而增加,埋藏点种子> 5 g后,发现比例较高,且不再有明显变化。  相似文献
