This paper describes the effects of a number of growth-regulating substances on the development of disease in tomato plants caused by Verticillium albo-atrum. Indole-acetic acid usually reduced disease and also reduced the number of hyphae in the stem but it increased tylosis; low concentrations slightly stimulated disease development. Some control of disease was obtained by removing apical buds, and axillary shoots as they developed. When the apical bud alone was removed, developing axillary shoots sometimes wilted; this did not occur in plants with intact buds. Gibberellic acid increased disease in susceptible plants and also induced symptoms in resistant plants. Maleic hydrazide greatly reduced growth of plants, made them more diseased and stimulated growth of the parasite in the vessels. Of other growth-regulating substances tested, 2,4,6-trichlorophenoxy-acetic acid, 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid increased disease at some concentrations and reduced it at others. Cycocel (2-chloroethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride and naphthaleneacetamide, gave good control of disease over a range of concentrations when applied to the soil in which plants were growing. Treatments which reduced disease also reduced the growth of the parasite in the shoot and stimulated the formation of tyloses. Indole and 2,4-dichloroanisole had some effect on disease development but this was much less than that induced by the other substances. 相似文献

The presence of potassium humate (commercial sample of Humussäure Riedel-de Haën A. G., Seelze-Hannover) in distilled water led to an increase in the content of alanine, aspartic and glutamic acid in the overground parts of wheat plants as compared with the content of these substances in control plants grown in distilled water. In plants cultivated on nutrient solutions a higher level of alanine and glutamic acid and a considerably lower level of amides was found than in plants grown in distilled water and in water with humate. Generally the content of amino acids was higher in the overground parts than in the roots after a cultivation period of one week as well as of 14 day. In the overground parts of 1 days old plants the level of aspartic acid, asparagine and alanine was found to be higher and that of glutamine lower than in seven days old plants. In the roots of the examined plants a decrease of the amino acid content accurred almost in all cases after a cultivation period of 14 days as compared to one of 7 days. 相似文献

Effect of humus fractions on the toxicity of 2-methyl-4-chlorphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) was examined in water cultures. Humus fractions and different MCPA quantities were added to Richter's nutrient solution used for maize (Zea mays L., cv. Ko?ovská raná) cultivation. The results show that MCPA and humus substances in the applied concentrations intensively influence the maize root system, especially the rhizodermis and apical meristem cells. MCPA reduces ion absorption, induces phosphorus excretion from root, reduces tissue hydratation and relatively quickly kills these cells, at the end stage and/or in the highest concentration. Humus fractions have an unambiguously positive effect on these processes, they increase the cell vitality. When humus substances are applied, the MCPA effect does not appear in potassium and nitrogen absorption, the inhibitory effect is maintained in phosphorus absorption and in tissue hydratation even with the most effective fraction—with fulvo acids. But all fractions increased the cell vitality of sorption tissue and meristems in the presence of MCPA. 相似文献

The effect of various humic fractions obtained from peat are examined using a yeast,Candida utilis as a test organism. Morphogenetic effects of various growth substances on the cotyledonary stomata of brinjal and tomato
The effect of different growth substances on the development of normal and abnormal stomata are presented. Anomocytic, paracytic,
anisocytic and stoma with a single subsidiary cell are observed. Abnormal developments like persistent stomatal cells, degeneration
of guard cells, unusual thickening, unequal guard cells, single guard cells and size and shape of the pore are noticed in
various growth substances. The growth substances also affect the stomatal frequency, stomatal index, epidermal frequency and
size of guard and epidermal cells in both the plants. The highest meristematic activity is found in MOR 100 ppm in brinjal
and in GA 25 ppm in tomato. The largest size of stomata is found in COL 25 ppm in brinjal and in MH 50 ppm in tomato. The

The effect of different concentrations of hydrochloric acid on the qualitative an quantitative content of carbohydrates in humus fraction hydrolyzates was investigated. Three humic acid preparations were subjected to the usual procedure for obtaining fractions of humic and hymatomelanic acids. The carbohydrate content of the hydrolyzates was determined after their Chromatographic separation on Whatman 1, using the Partridge system and detection with acid anilin phtalate. The results showed that the qualitative carbohydrate content in the hydrolyzates of most humus fractions of samples used was identical. With increasing acid concentrations the amount of hydrolyzable carbohydrates usually increased, the total amount of carbohydrate in the hydrolyzate not exceeding 4% . The difference in the carbohydrate content as between hydrolysis with 0-9N and 5-3N HC1 was sometimes fourfold. A higher content of hexoses than of pentoses was generally found. 相似文献

The effects of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 250315nm) were determined on Euglena gracilis with respect to speed,phototactic orientation, specific growth rate, and in the presenceof humic substances. Humic substances had a protective effectwhen studying the speed and specific growth rate. However, thedegree of phototactic orientation decreased in UV-B radiationboth with and without humic substances. The inhibition of O2evolution and speed was most pronounced when using cutoff filtersWG280 and WG295. The photosynthetic inhibitor DCMU (106M) did not have any effect on the speed, but the 02 evolutiondecreased to zero. induction)in vitro was analyzed. We examined the effects of changes in growth conditions (type of tube closure, light, and sugar levels) on
the development of photoautotrophy and growth during micropropagation and sought to establish whether they affected later
acclimation to conditionsex vitro. During the two stagesin vitro, plantlets were grown in tubes under two different PPFD (50 and 110 μmol m−2 s−1), in media with three different sucrose concentrations (0, 1.5, and 3.0%, w/v) and with two different CO2 levels inside the tubes (controlled by either tightly closed caps or loosely sealed caps, and with an external CO2 concentration of 750 μmol mol−1). The development of photoautotrophy was assessed by determining the difference between the stable carbon isotope composition
(δ13C) of sugar cane sucrose used as a heterotrophic carbon source and that of leaflets grownin vitro. Plantlets from the root-induction stage showed a more highly developed photoautotrophy than those from the shoot- multiplication
stage. At both stages, utilization of closed caps was the treatment which most stimulated development of photoautotrophy in
plantlets. Also, lowering PPFD or sucrose concentration induced a greater degree of photoautotrophic development, the strongest
effect being observed in plantlets cultured inside loosely sealed tubes. During acclimationex vitro, plantlets taken from loosely sealed tubesin vitro performed better than those cultured inside tightly sealed tubes. The former, as well as recording a larger increase in fresh
weight during this stage, also showed more negative δ13C in the newly developed leaves, which would seem to indicate a better water status during acclimation. Present results validate
the usefulness of δ13C analysis of leaflets as a simple technique in assessing the development of photoautotrophy during culturein vitro. In addition, δ13C analysis can be extended to evaluate growth conditions during acclimation toex vitro conditions. 相似文献

Changes in water uptake immediately following the application of high concentrations of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) into the root medium of whole plants ofPisum sativum andVicia faba were investigated potometrically under controlled conditions. It was found that concentrations between 10?2 and 10?5 m bring about a sudden, pronounced and lasting inhibition of water uptake. Its rate depends directly on MCPA concentration. At 10?2 m, sudden inhibition of water uptake becomes apparent as early as 10 min after application. With decreasing concentrations the appearance of inhibition is retarded but the inhibition is still sudden and well-pronounced. The inhibition of water uptake observed after MCPA application to the root medium of whole plants agrees with the sudden striking reduction in transpiration intensity observed byAllerup (1964) after the application of similar concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The presence of MCPA in the nutrient medium causes inhibition of water uptake even in cut plants. Its rate again depends on the concentration of the growth substance. The inhibition does not appear here as quickly and is not as sudden and pronounced. High concentrations of MCPA during application to over-ground plant organs do not bring about immediate inhibition of water uptake by the root. 相似文献

As photoautotrophs, plants can use both the form and amount of fixed carbon as a measure of the light environment. In this study, we used a variety of approaches to elucidate the role of exogenous sucrose in modifying seedling growth dynamics. In addition to its known effects on germination, high-resolution temporal analysis revealed that sucrose could extend the number of days plants exhibited rapid hypocotyl elongation, leading to dramatic increases in ultimate seedling height. In addition, sucrose changed the timing of daily growth maxima, demonstrating that diel growth dynamics are more plastic than previously suspected. Sucrose-dependent growth promotion required function of multiple phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs), and overexpression of PIF5 led to growth dynamics similar to plants exposed to sucrose. Consistent with this result, sucrose was found to increase levels of PIF5 protein. PIFs have well-established roles as integrators of response to light levels, time of day and phytohormone signaling. Our findings strongly suggest that carbon availability can modify the known photomorphogenetic signaling network. 相似文献

Summary Respirometer experiments show that when a dry soil is moistened a characteristic pattern of decomposition occurs in which an initial period of relatively rapid decomposition (Stage 1) falls, during a few days, to a slow steady rate (Stage 2). This pattern is repetitive with successive dryings and rewettings and is common to all soils so far investigated. The magnitude of decomposition depends in the percent carbon in the soil and on the drying conditions, air-drying being less effective than oven-drying. Decomposition during Stage 1 conforms approximately to a first-order reaction and proportionate amounts of nitrogen are mineralised. A similar pattern of decomposition occurs under field conditions throughout successive wet and dry seasons.Evidence is presented to show that decomposition involves direct microbial attack of the solid organic substrate and that the recurrent pattern of decomposition is due to the state in which the microbial population is left after drying and its subsequent behaviour on rewetting. The rapid decline in the rate of decomposition on rewetting (Stage 1) appears not to involve (1) the development of toxic conditions, (b) physical changes in the soil (since similar patterns of decomposition also occur with organic material alone or in sand) or (c) rapid decomposition of organic material made soluble by drying.The operation and repetition of this pattern of decomposition in the field has important consequences in the rundown of soil carbon and the mineralisation of soil nitrogen particularly where well-defined wet and dry seasons occur. These consequences are discussed in relation to climate and certain agricultural practices. 相似文献

Shoots which proliferated from shoot tip explants of Colorado White Simm carnation and Fantastic tomato on MS medium containing 5 mgl-1 benzyladenine were rooted and grown in vitro as microplants. Tomato microplants grown in medium with 5 gl-1 sucrose had less overall shoot and root growth than those with 10,20, or 30 gl-1 sucrose regardless of NAA level. Carnation shoot growth was reduced by 5 g l-1 sucrose but root growth was not affected except when no sucrose was supplied. Microplant height and rooting of carnation were maximal when grown in 20 gl-1 sucrose whereas tomato microplant growth was greatest with 30 gl-1 sucrose. Microplants of both species had reduced height and root growth when the MS nutrient salts were lowered to 25%, 50%, or 75% compared to full strength when sucrose was supplied at 5 gl-1. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of 2,4 D (2,4dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) used separately and in a mixture
with BAP (benzylaminopurine) on fertility and some features of tomato fruit. The plant flowers were immersed only once in
water solutions of the growth regulators (2,4 D 0.001 %; 0.005 %; 2,4 D 0.001 % + BAP 0.001 %; 2,4 D 0.005 % + BAP 0.005 %).
The mean fruit weight, fruit volume, specific weight, and the jelly weight were determined. The number of seeds collected
from the fruit was used as a criterion of fertility estimation. No statistically significant differences were found in the
mean fruit weight, fruit volume and specific weight. The fruits derived from the plants which were not exposed to the action
of growth regulators were characterized by the smallest amount of jelly while the fruits set under the influence of 0.001
% 2,4 D + 0.001 % BAP had the largest jelly amount. The greatest differentiation was found in fertility which ranged from
7.5 seeds from the fruit derived from the plants treated with 0.005 % 2,4 D, to 75.7 seeds from the non-treated plants’ fruit.

In the model system of tissue culture, the effect of dermatotrophic substances, such as the tenzides and conservatory substances, was tested. The cytotoxic effect of the substances was evaluated according to the vitality of the cells and the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in the suspension culture of human lymphocytes and further according to the migration inhibition of cells from the animal spleen fragments (SF). The cells obtained from rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and man were used. The highest correlation between the concentration of the substance in the cultivation medium and its toxic effect in the culture has been proved in the tests of LDH activity from the supernatant of the human peripheral lymphocytes culture and further in the migration inhibition test from rabbit SF. Both the tests are in mutual correlation. The determination of LDH activity represents a sensitive marker of the cell damage, the least sensitive is the estimation of the cell vitality. It has been proved that the system of suspension culture of human peripheral lymphocytes and the migration inhibition test from rabbit SF is suitable for the screening determination of the effect of dermatotrophic substances. The system of tissue culture compared to classical tests of skin irritation performed in vivo secures overall objectivity in evaluating the results and the possibility of making a number of parallels without any ethical limits. 相似文献

The root, vegetative shoot and fruit growth of November and January sown glasshouse tomato plants grown in flowing water culture was followed over 6–7 months. The relationship between vegetative and reproductive growth was examined after two-thirds of the flowers were removed from half the experimental plants. This resulted in larger plants which had fewer, larger fruits and eventually a fruit yield almost as large as the controls. In the control plants, fruit growth increased steadily until it reached 90% of the total incremental fresh weight of the plant 50–60 days after first anthesis. Leaf growth was markedly depressed at this stage and root growth ceased 4 wk after anthesis. Some root death was observed from anthesis onwards. When fruit growth subsequently diminished, vegetative growth recovered but to a lower rate than before fruiting commenced. Following partial flower removal, only 64% or less of the total increment of fresh weight went into the fruit. Although vegetative growth at this stage was thus greater than in the control plants, both shoot and root growth followed the same qualitative pattern with time. The ratio of vegetative shoot to root fresh weight remained essentially constant throughout the fruiting phase in plants of both sowings whether flowers were removed or not. This suggests that the fruit grew in competition with the vegetative organs as a whole, although, for a short period at early fruiting, root growth was more seriously affected. The pattern and amount of fruiting in this indeterminate plant was influenced by the size of the vegetative organs at fruiting, and by the effect of the existing developing fruit on further vegetative and reproductive growth. 相似文献
