In this paper the authors discuss the role of regulation in assuring blood safety. After an overview of the subject by a leading expert, examples are provided of regulatory systems for blood transfusion services in several countries and regions. Additionally, the perspective of WHO is given on the essential role of national regulatory authorities in assuring the quality of national blood programmes.Collectively, the sections of this paper afford an opportunity for readers to make comparisons among different regulatory frameworks and to "benchmark" among the existing systems. Despite many differences in approach, a clear pattern emerges of worldwide efforts to strengthen blood regulatory systems.  相似文献

DNA regulatory sequences control gene expression by forming DNA-protein complex with specific DNA binding protein. A major task of studies of gene regulation is to identify DNA regulatory sequences in genome-wide. Especially with the rapid pace of genome project, the function of DNA regulatory sequences becomes one of the focuses in functional genome era. Several approaches for screening and characterizing DNA regulatory sequences emerged one by one, from initial low-throughput methods to high-throughput strategies. Even though at present bioinformatics tools facilitate the process of screening regulatory fragments, the most reliable results will come from experimental test. This article highlights some experimental methods for the identification of regulatory sequences. A brief review of the history and procedures for selection methods are provided. Tendency as well as limitation and extension of these methods are also presented.  相似文献

RNA has long been a favoured medium for in vitro evolution and engineering. Functional RNAs produced in vitro can bind small molecules (aptamers), possess catalytic activity (ribozymes) or do both (aptazymes). A plethora of recent work has shown similar strategies used naturally for gene regulation in bacteria. Interest in these natural systems has inspired an effort to engineer and evolve this activity in vivo. A recent paper by Isaacs et al. describes the engineering and in vivo activity of a small RNA that removes translation inhibition by binding the 5' untranslated region of its target mRNA and making the ribosome-binding site accessible.  相似文献

Plasmodesmata and the phloem form a cytoplasmic network that permits direct cell–cell communication in plants. This network can mediate the trafficking of selective proteins and RNAs that may have important developmental functions. Recent work has provided evidence that protein and RNA traffic across specific interfaces of this network is regulated in a distinct manner. Progress has been made in identifying potential cellular factors that confer such regulation. These advances should promote further investigations into the mechanisms and functions of protein and RNA traffic using biochemical, cellular, genetic and molecular tools.  相似文献

A concept of the evolution of signal molecules and their receptors is proposed. The formation of novel regulatory proteins by way of gene fusion and gene shuffling and the role of these processes in metabolic integration are considered. Endogenous opioid peptides take an active part in the pathogenesis of motion sickness (MS). Some regulatory peptides (substances P, gamma and des-tyr-gamma-endorphins) manifest antiemetic properties, unlike opioid peptides and morphine. Thus, we have examined the vestibulo-protective properties of some regulatory peptides during simulation of MS in cats. Vestibulo-protective properties have been discovered in some peptides: sweet water hydra undecapeptide, substances P, gamma and des-tyr-gamma-endorphins. It has been suggested that regulatory peptides take an active part in the genesis of vestibulo-protective disorders during motion sickness.  相似文献
