Occupational exposure to pesticides has not been conducted in depth so far in China. The potential dermal exposure and risk assessment were conducted for applicators through application with a knapsack power sprayer in cucumber greenhouses. The spray suspension was prepared with 75% chlorothalonil WP and 48% chlorpyrifos EC. The dermal patch method was applied to assess the potential dermal exposure (PDE) of applicators during application. The average total PDE on the whole body of applicators during application of chlorothalonil and chlorpyrifos was 83.2 mL h?1 and 85.1 mL h?1, respectively. The most exposed part of the body was arms, especially the right arm. For risk assessment, the margin of safety (MOS) was calculated from the PDE. The MOS values were 0.1 and 0.2 for application of chlorothalonil and chlorpyrifos, respectively, both less than 1, which indicated low possibility of health risk. 相似文献

The use of animal vs. human data for the purposes of establishing human risk was examined for four pharmaceutical compounds: acetylsalicylic acid, cyclophosphamide, indomethacin and clofibric acid. Literature searches were conducted to identify preclinical and clinical data useful for the derivation of acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) from which a number of risk values including occupational exposure limits (OELs) could be calculated. OELs were calculated using human data and then again using animal data exclusively. For two compounds, ASA and clofibric acid use of animal data alone led to higher OELs (not health protective), while for indomethacin and cyclophosphamide use of animal data resulted in the same or lower OELs based on human data alone. In each case arguments were made for why the use of human data was preferred. The results of the analysis support a basic principle of risk assessment that all available data be considered 相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) used in agriculture and for public health purposes were banned in Thailand over the past decade; however, their persistent residues have been found in several agricultural areas of the country. This may result in adverse effects to human populations. This study investigated the concentration of organochlorine pesticides residues (OCPRs) in surface water and evaluated the potential cancer risk associated with dermal contact of the local fisherman fishing in the Khlong 7 canal, Rangsit agricultural area, central Thailand. Water samples were extracted using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and then analyzed by gas chromatography with microelectron capture detector (μ -ECD). The results show that low concentrations of OCPRs were detected in parts per billion (ppb or ng/ml) levels, that is, ∑ Endosulfan (α -, β -, and -sulfate) 0.082 ng/ml > DDT and derivatives 0.019 ng/ml > ∑ HCH (α -, γ -, β -, and δ -HCH) 0.014 ng/ml > aldrin and dieldrin 0.007 ng/ml > heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide 0.0068 ng/ml > endrin and endrin aldehyde 0.005 ng/ml > methoxychlor 0.001 ng/ml, respectively. Using the worst-case scenario defined as the reasonable maximum exposure (RME) to assess the potential cancer risk, five OCPs (dieldrin, 4,4′ -DDT, β -HCH, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide) may pose a risk of concern on a lifetime human carcinogenesis greater than one in a million. 相似文献

Dietary exposure to Cadmium (Cd) is of increasing interest globally because of the adverse health effects of Cd arising from multiple sources. The assumptions used when undertaking deterministic assessment of Cd in global or regional diets have implications when applied to specific national cases representing local variation in food composition and consumption patterns different from global or regional norms. We have conducted deterministic dietary Cd exposure assessments for the South Korean population using a variety of schemes for point estimation. Consumption data from the Korean Nutrition Survey (2001 to 2003) and monitoring data from the Korea Food and Drug Administration were used as the basis for the exposure estimates. The average daily per capita Cd exposure was 14 μ g for the South Korean population, representing about 27% of tolerable daily intake (TDI) and is similar to that reported in other countries. The hazard index (HI, the ratio of total Cd exposure to the TDI) typically ranged from 0.3 to 0.9 depending on assumptions used in deterministic estimates of dietary exposure. Even though the current exposure of the South Korean population at large is found to be safe on the basis of these estimates, consideration of high-end patterns of Cd level and consumption suggests the need for continued vigilance in dietary Cd monitoring. 相似文献

The arrival of West Nile Virus in North America prompted public health authorities to develop intervention plans in order to prevent the propagation of this mosquito-transmitted pathogen. The last-resort measure proposed by the Government of Quebec (Canada) is the large-scale application of insecticides by aerial or ground Ultra Low Volume (ULV) treatment. This article presents an assessment of the exposure to malathion and its metabolite, malaoxon, for a population where an eventual application of malathion would occur. Each exposure pathway is detailed by describing the equation and every conservative assumption. This methodological framework was then used with the aim of assessing the toxicological risk based on a probabilistic approach (see companion article, this issue). In the current study, a daily absorbed dose of the mixture of malathion and malaoxon was estimated in terms of “malathion equivalent dose.” Each exposure pathway following a single event of ground or aerial ULV spraying of malathion was investigated for the population, classified into five age groups. Dermal exposure to dislodgeable residues on turf, foliage, and hard surfaces was estimated to be the most important source of exposure compared to any other pathways; it accounts for 63% to 98% of the estimated cumulative absorbed doses. The hand-to-mouth behavior of toddlers may also contribute considerably to their “malathion-equivalent” exposure (i.e., approximately 15% of the cumulative dose). Otherwise, the current study shows that ground ULV spraying is the type of treatment that may induce lower exposure, because the predicted concentration of malathion on turf and foliar surfaces is less than the one predicted for aerial ULV spraying. 相似文献

This study aimed to identify factors associated with dermal exposure to cypermethrin and assess the health risks among young children in an agricultural community in Thailand. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the parents/caregivers of 58 children (aged 1–3 years). Wipe samples were analyzed for cypermethrin by gas chromatography-microelectron capture detection (GC-µECD). Health risk assessments were based on the cypermethrin concentration on the children’s hands and feet. Spearman’s correlation indicated significant associations among cypermethrin concentrations on the hands, feet, floors/wooden beds, and toys (rho?=?0.438–0.613, p-value <0.001). Cypermethrin concentrations on the hands were significantly and inversely correlated with the child’s caregiver being the child’s mother and insecticide use (p?<?0.01). Concentrations on the feet were significantly correlated with insecticide use (p?<?0.05) and showering (p?<?0.01). The hazard quotient calculated from dermal exposure via the hands and feet showed no risk for potential noncarcinogenic effects (5.586?×?10?5 in the dry season and 4.301?×?10?4 in the wet season). These findings suggest that young children might not be at risk for cypermethrin exposure through the dermal route. Residential exposure among young children may be reduced by improved hygiene. Health risk assessments of environmental insecticide exposure via the oral and inhalation routes require further investigation. 相似文献

Use of wallboard made from synthetic gypsum generated via flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) by coal-fired power plants (FGD gypsum) raised questions concerning the potential for exposure to residual trace metals. Because gypsum is widely used (e.g., in wallboard), any issue with metals could have far-reaching implications. A conceptual site model evaluated potential human health exposure pathways for metals in gypsum, through consideration of data for 21 metals including samples of natural (mined) gypsum, and of FGD gypsum. Because there are no screening values for gypsum, comparisons were made to background soil concentrations and to risk-based concentrations for metals in soil termed preliminary remedial action goals (PRGs), which assume more frequent and prolonged contact with particulate soil than would be likely for gypsum, and thus provide a health protective means for evaluation of exposure. Additional screenings evaluated occupational exposure and agricultural use of gypsum. Maximum metal concentrations in natural and FGD gypsum samples were either consistent with background concentrations or much lower than PRGs for residential or agricultural soil, or workplace air, and thus exposure pathways for these media were considered incomplete. Separate analyses of mercury volatilization were conducted, and this pathway was also found to be incomplete. 相似文献

The potential health risk due to lifetime exposure to copper, lead, chromium, zinc, and iron in urban soil of Karachi, Pakistan, was evaluated. Mean concentrations of Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Fe in topsoil samples were 33.3 ± 12.8, 42.1 ± 55.8, 9.6 ± 4.2, 99.5 ± 37.3, and 908.4 ± 57.8 mg kg?1, respectively. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency model was adopted for the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment from different exposure pathways. Risk assessment indicated that the overall results for the carcinogenic risk were insignificant. However, the carcinogenic risk from Pb due to oral ingestion of soil exceeded the value of 1 × 10?6, in some areas of the city. It indicates that the exposure to Pb-contaminated soil may cause adverse health effects in humans, especially in children. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) for different metals through ingestion and dermal pathways was also found to be less than 1. The combined Hazard Index (HI) for children through different routes of exposure was 8.9 times greater than for adults. It indicates that the children are more susceptible to non-carcinogenic health effects of trace metals compared to adults. Particularly, non-carcinogenic risk of Pb to children via oral ingestion needs special attention. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the environmental impact and the human health risks associated with metals exposure in the Catalan stretch of the Ebro River, Spain. The concentrations of the following elements were determined in soils and tap water: As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, and Pb. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were separately assessed for adults and children. Relatively low metal concentrations in tap water were found. It indicates that water intake is not a relevant source of metals for human health impact in the area under evaluation. In turn, the levels of metals in soils were similar or less than those found in a number of recent worldwide surveys. The presence of industrial facilities located upstream the Ebro River, including a chloralkali plant, should not mean additional non-carcinogenic risks for the population living in the area. The results of the current study allow us to establish that the concentrations of most carcinogenic elements (with the exception of As) should not mean potential health risks for the local population. However, because of the relatively high levels of geological origin found for As, a continued monitoring of these elements would be desirable. 相似文献

Evaluation of Heavy Metals and Associated Health Risks in a Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant's Sludge for Its Land Application 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objectives of this study are to monitor the heavy metal concentrations in sludge samples collected from the Ankara Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (ACWWTP) in Turkey, check if these concentrations comply with the Turkish Regulation (Regulation Regarding the Use of Domestic and Urban Sludges on Soil), and evaluate possible health risks of heavy metals in sludge due to ingestion of sludge by a child. Monthly sludge samples were collected from the ACWWTP during 2012 and analyzed for seven heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn). According to the results from the study, heavy metal concentrations showed no common seasonal trend. All heavy metal concentrations, except for one sample in which Zn was found to be at the limit value, are below the Turkish Regulation limits. In addition, health risks calculations for the “child ingesting biosolids” pathway, which is one of the most critical pathways identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for land application, were carried out. Among the seven heavy metals, Pb contributed the most to the cumulative non-cancer health risks throughout 2012. Nevertheless, the results showed that cumulative non-cancer health risks associated with this pathway are within the acceptable non-cancer health risk level suggested by USEPA. 相似文献

The Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic (IEUBK) model is frequently used to estimate blood lead concentrations of children exposed to lead. Simulations with the IEUBK model were run to estimate the blood lead concentration in children living in the vicinity of a non-ferrous plant, situated in Hoboken, Belgium. Concentrations in soil ranged from 59–2425 mg Pb/kg dm, average concentrations in house dust ranged from 234–73394 mg Pb/kg dm. Measured blood lead concentrations in children aged 2–7 years were between 3 and 35 μ g/dl. Exposure sources were indoor dust in the house and the school, outdoor dust and soil in the home surrounding and at the school's playground, and suspended dust in the air. Soil ingestion values and lead exposure from food were changed to Flemish values. The model was able to predict the measured blood lead concentrations adequately except for the lowest exposure group. Predictions showed a systematic overestimation. Analysis of the data revealed that the neighbourhood's school is an important source of exposure to lead; indoor house dust dominates exposure for children going to school outside the area, because of the high concentrations of lead in indoor dust (3 to 5 times higher than in outdoor soil). 相似文献

Heavy metals and As in rice are of increasing concern in China. In this study, concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Sb, Ni, and As in rice collected from markets in Fuzhou, China, were investigated by ICP-MS and AFS, and their potential health risk to inhabitants were estimated by target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and target cancer risk (TR). The results showed that the concentrations of the seven studied elements in rice grain were all below the permissible limits of China's national standards for foodstuffs (NY/T 419–2007 and GB 2726–2012). For non-carcinogenic risk, the THQ values of individual elements were within the safe interval. However, without considering the bio-accessibility and speciation of toxic elements, the HI values suggest inhabitants in Fuzhou may experience potential health effects due to rice consumption. Cadmium is the major contributor to HI, followed by As. The TR values of As for adults and children were both higher than the acceptable range. The results of this study suggest that more attention should be paid toward monitoring toxic substances (especially Cd and As) in rice in order to assure the food safety for consumers in Fuzhou, China. 相似文献

Since natural and anthropogenic sources can contribute to elevated levels of metals at remote and background sites, identifying the source of a metal is an important step in environmental risk assessment. Various source apportionment procedures are available to identify metal sources, and have been used extensively to determine sources in urban settings and to a lesser extent at remote sites. However, measuring metals at remote or background sites presents unique challenges with respect to experimental design. The state of the science in monitoring techniques and source apportionment procedures is discussed in terms of limitations and applicability to remote sites, and recommendations are made on maximizing information recovery through source apportionment procedures by incorporating appropriate experimental design. 相似文献

Abstract The introduction of the pesticide registration system in pesticide risk assessments has promoted the scientific and safe use of pesticides, and the assessment of occupational exposure risk. In the present study, we performed an experiment in a citrus orchard subject to normal orchard management practices. By measuring the exposure of applicators’ (farmers and technicians) body parts to 45% malathion emulsifiable concentrate during its application using electric backpack sprayers (0.25?KPa) and stretcher-mounted sprayers (1.5?KPa), the unit exposure (UE) was determined. The risks of exposure for pesticide applicators who adopted five different protective measures (A: no personal protective equipment (PPE), i.e., no clothes, no gloves, no caps, and no socks; B: short-sleeved top and shorts; C: short-sleeved top, shorts, and a single pair of gloves; D: short-sleeved top, shorts, a single pair of gloves, and a cap; E: long-sleeved top, long pants, a single pair of gloves, and a cap) were also assessed. The results were as follows: 1) The total levels of exposure for pesticide applicators using electric backpack sprayers and stretcher-mounted sprayers were 3613.63?µg and 5654.28?µg, respectively. When electric backpack sprayers were used, the body parts that had the highest exposure were the head (13.8%), hands (19.9%) and back (14.0%), and when stretcher-mounted sprayers were used, the hands (32.5%) and lower legs (21.1%) had the highest level of exposure; 2) In the absence of PPE, the UE values for farmers who used electric backpack sprayers and farmers who used stretcher-mounted sprayers were significantly different. However, when PPE was used, the difference in UE values between the farmers using the two different types of sprayers was not significant; 3) When protective measure A was adopted, the risk quotient (RQ) values of the farmers and technicians who used electric backpack sprayers for the application of malathion were 1.44 and 0.54, respectively; the corresponding RQ values when protective measure B was adopted were 0.97 and 0.28, respectively. When stretcher-mounted sprayers were used for the application of chlorpyrifos, the RQ value of the farmers who adopted protective measure E was 0.43 while other types of PPE use resulted in RQ values greater than 1. In contrast, the RQ value for technicians was 1.62 when protective measure A was used and 1.02 when protective measure B was adopted, whereas other types of PPE use resulted in RQ values less than 1. Therefore, besides increasing the awareness of personal protection among pesticide applicators, improvement in the management of pesticide use and the enhancement of standard operations are of practical significance for controlling occupational exposure to pesticides. 相似文献

AbstractHigh-throughput methods are now routinely used to rapidly screen chemicals for potential hazard. However, hazard-based decision-making excludes important exposure considerations resulting in an incomplete estimation of chemical safety. Models to estimate exposure exist, but are generally unsuited to keep up with high-throughput demands. The High-Throughput Exposure Assessment Tool (HEAT) is designed to efficiently predict near-field exposure to consumers and workers via inhalation, oral and dermal routes. HEAT is based on well-known modeling algorithms and provides default model parameters to support reasonably conservative exposure estimates. Underlying chemical-specific data are uploaded or entered by the end user. HEAT’s main strength is the flexible tiered screening functionality, which enables exposure estimates for single or multiple chemicals simultaneously. Hypothetical case examples highlighting the application of HEAT to more complex exposure estimates for alternative and aggregate assessments are provided. 相似文献

This paper investigated the concentrations of Pb in foods and the potential health risk from Pb exposure via surveys and a literature review. It was shown that the mean Pb concentration in different food groups was in the following decreasing order: marine products > meat > egg > vegetable > cereal > bean> dairy > fruit. More precisely, on average the weekly Pb intake (mg kg?1 bw week?1) for men, women, 2–3-year-old children, and 4–17-year-old children was 0.0055, 0.0059, 0.0145, and 0.0091, respectively. We used both deterministic and probabilistic methods to estimate the target hazard quotients (THQs) by comparing the dietary Pb intake estimation with respect to the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The result showed that THQ values were lower than 1 in most cases, except the 97.5th percentile THQ values for 2–3-year-old children, and the probability of greater dietary Pb exposure than the tolerant weekly intake (THQ > 1) were 0.2%, 0.6%, 3.7%, and 1.2% for adult men, women, 2–3-year-old children, and 4–17-year-old children, respectively, indicating a low health risk for Chinese consumers. Among all groups, children, especially 2–3-year-old children were the most sensitive sub-population with regard to Pb exposure. Finally, it still appeared necessary to continue undertaking efforts to reduce exposure to Pb. 相似文献

Pesticide residues (PRs) in market vegetables have been reported regularly. Greengrocers may be exposed to several sorts of PRs on vegetables through hand contact. Health risk assessment from occupational exposure to PRs on vegetables is particularly concerning. This study was conducted among 91 vegetable vendors at a large fresh market in Bangkok. Hand wipe samples were collected in the dry season to extract and analyze PRs including organophosphates (OPs), pyrethroids (PYs), and carbamates (CAs) by gas chromatography (GC-FPD/GC-μECD) and liquid chromatography (LC–MS). The results showed that all wipe samples contained OPs, PYs, and CAs, mainly chlorpyrifos (0.01–0.14 µg/hands) and cypermethrin (0.42–11.64 µg/hands). The frequently detected PRs were aldicarb (87.2%), carbofuran (69.2%), permethrin (63.7%), and profenofos (60.0%). At 99th percentile values of PR exposure, average daily dose was 2.42 × 10?5 mg/kg/d and hazard index did not exceed the acceptable level (0.287). Glove wearing, hand washing, and work-related factors were significantly associated with PRs on hands after adjusted for gender (p-value < 0.05). Greengrocers may therefore not be at risk from PRs on vegetables and exposure via hands during their work. However, these findings suggest that proper personal hygiene practices among greengrocers should be considered to prevent them from PR exposure and potential health risks. 相似文献

Data from the Workplace Environmental Monitoring Program was used to evaluate the concentrations and risk of occupational exposure to styrene in different industries to identify which industries should be prioritized for styrene exposure management. Risk assessments were conducted for the five industries with several workplaces that mostly use styrene: motor vehicle and motorcycle maintenance and repair services, other chemical product manufacturing, ship and boat building, basic chemical manufacturing, and plastic products manufacturing. The highest central tendency exposure was found in the plastic products manufacturing industry (10.14 mg/m3). In addition, the hazard quotient (HQ) for central tendency exposure exceeded 1 only in the plastic products manufacturing industry. Almost two-thirds (62.2%) of workplaces in the plastic products manufacturing industry have an HQ exceeding 1. We conclude that workers in the plastic products manufacturing industry are at the highest risk for styrene exposure, and those in motor vehicle and motorcycle maintenance and repair service and basic chemical manufacturing are at the lowest risk. These results show that styrene exposure could be most effectively managed by prioritizing control measures in the plastic products manufacturing industry. 相似文献
