Comparative activity of cefepime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, imipenem and piperacillin/tazobactam against isolates from patients of pediatric intensive care units within October-December 1998 was studied. The isolates were identified with the Walkaway-40 System. The antibiotic susceptibility was evaluated by the E-test on the Mueller-Hinton II agar. The data were interpreted in accordance with the NCCLS. The number of the isolates totaled 100. Among them not more than 10 to 12 strains belonged to the same species. 92 per cent of the isolates was susceptible to cefepime and 70 to 75 per cent of the isolates were susceptible to the third generation cephalosporins. Piperacillin/tazobactam proved to be highly susceptible, the number of the isolates resistant and moderately resistant to it being 6 and 1 per cent respectively. The results showed that cefepime was intermediate between the third generation cephalosporins and carbapenems.  相似文献

The occurrence of third molar agenesis was recorded in a sample of 1,492 maxillary and 1,718 mandibular arches belonging to the prehistoric settlers of the Gan Canaria, Tenerife, and La Gomera Islands (Canary Islands). There were significant sex differences only in the Tenerife sample for the maxilla, the incidence in females being higher than in males. In the Gran Canaria sample, the total frequency (male and female combined) of third molar agenesis (individual count method) was 8.7% for the maxilla and 9.3% for the mandible. In the Tenerife and La Gomera samples, the frequencies were 11.1% and 10.7% for the maxilla and 14.6% and 13.3% for the mandible. In the Tenerife sample, the differences between both jaws were statistically significant. The incidence of missing third molars in the mandible was significantly higher in Tenerife than in Gran Canaria, but the other sample differences were statistically nonsignificant. Bilateral absence of third molars was observed in about two-thirds of the specimens examined. Some correlation between both jaws for the occurrence of third molar agenesis was found. The hypotheses that have been proposed in order to explain third molar agenesis in man are discussed. It is suggested that the loss of the third molar in Homo sapiens could be produced by a heterochronic phenomenon of postdisplacement, as a consequence of the phylogenetic tendency toward the delay of the onset of the third molar formation, and that the genetic factors responsible for the absence of these teeth could be related to the general process of delay in tooth formation.  相似文献

The study reports lead concentrations and lead and strontium stable-isotope ratios in mandibular molars of roe deer from three different areas in western Germany. Lead concentrations in third molars ranged between 0.23 and 36.61 μg/g (dry weight). Comparing lead concentrations in first molars and third molars in a group of ca. 1.5- or ca. 2.5-year-old individuals from the same area revealed an effect of tooth age on tooth lead content. The higher lead concentrations in the first molars were attributed to the longer period of lead accumulation by the dentin of these teeth compared with the later-forming third molars. Differences in lead isotopic signatures of the teeth were observed between the three areas, presumably reflecting variation in exposure to different sources of environmental lead. We also found marked variation in the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of the teeth, with only a small overlap in values between two of the areas. Strontium isotope analysis alone or in combination with lead isotope analyses can be a useful means of assessing the provenance of deer teeth of unknown geographical origin.  相似文献

Although first permanent molar hypoconulid absence, third molar agenesis, and small tooth size are all part of the evolutionary trend of dental reduction, each bears a different relationship to dental caries. Caries prevalence in the maxillary and mandibular permanent first molars of the Burlington Research Centre serial experimental group at age 16 years was less in the children whose first molars were missing the hypoconulid. Conversely, caries prevalence in mandibular first molars was greater in the children who had agenesis of third molars. The extraction of first molars due to caries was more frequent in children with agenesis of third molars, less frequent in those with absence of hypoconulids of the first molars and unrelated to tooth size. Caries prevalence was less in small teeth, and occurred least in the small mandibular first molars with four cusps. Whereas this is in harmony with the hypothesis that evolutionary dental reductions resulted from the pressure of caries, the increased prevalence of caries and extractions coinciding with third molar agenesis does not support this view. In addition, agenesis of hypoconulids and agenesis of third molars were related to changes in structures unrelated to caries.  相似文献

Abstract— Gangliosides were isolated from purified human myelin in a yield of 62 μg of lipid-bound sialic acid per 100 mg of dry myelin. Sialosylgalactosyl ceramide (G7) was found to be a major component of the ganglioside fraction, amounting to 15 per cent of the total sialic acid. It accounted for 10 per cent of lipid-bound sialic acid in adult human white matter, making it the third most abundant ganglioside on a molar basis. These results were obtained with an improved method for isolating total gangliosides in high yield, by employing DEAE-Sephadex column chromatography. Myelin from other mammalian species had considerably less G7, and there were also indications of maturational changes. Both 2-hydroxy and unsubstituted fatty acids were components of the ceramide unit, in a ratio of 3:2, respectively. The overall fatty acid pattern was very similar to that for myelin cerebroside and sulphatide. Long-chain bases included only C18 species, with sphingosine predominating (>90 per cent). These observations suggest a metabolic relationship between G7 and either cerebroside or sulphatide.  相似文献

The effect of reduction in particle size on the anthelmintic efficacy of mebendazole (methyl 5 (6)- benzoyle 1–2 benzimidazole carbamate) was studied in rats undergoing a primary infection with N. brasiliensis. A single oral treatment with fine ground mebendazole (particle size spectrum—54·95 per cent of particles less than 10·62 μ dia.; 86·06 per cent less than 21·27 μ) removed more than 98 per cent of adult worms from the intestine at a dose rate of 12·5 mg/kg body wt. On the other hand the best result achieved with coarse ground mebendazole (18·47 per cent of particles less than 10·62 μ dia; 42·26 per cent less than 21·27 μ dia) was 58 per cent of adult worms removed at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body wt. It was also shown that fine ground mebendazole adversely affected migrating third stage larvae of N. brasiliensis.  相似文献

This is a survey of the causes of blindness recorded by three students of The City University during a six-week stay at NOOR Eye Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan. The nature of the sample used makes it unsuitable for direct comparison with surveys from other countries. Nevertheless, broad conclusions can be drawn. Severe eye disease is a considerable problem in Afghanistan, in common with other developing countries. The survey included all new patients seen in the outpatient clinic, blind to the extent of being unable to count fingers at more than three metres, in one eye or both. The sample of patients was examined by an ophthalmologist working with our team. A diagnosis was made and various social and demographic questions were asked with the help of an interpreter. In all, 473 patients were examined and included in our survey sample, a very high proportion of the new patients attending the clinic (40.46 per cent). The main causes of blindness were found to be cataract (31.12 per cent), corneal scarring (19.8 per cent), chorioretinal degenerations (6.79 per cent), glaucoma (6.65 per cent) and aphakia (5.52 per cent). Of the major causes of blindness, about forty per cent of the cases were considered remediable, and about thirty per cent could have been prevented. An outstanding difference between the causes of blindness in developed nations and those seen in Afghanistan was the amount of blindness caused by infection, especially in the younger age groups (up to 30 years). Cataract is a major cause of blindness in the older age groups of both societies. People suffering from ocular disease in Afghanistan wait until their sight is badly impaired or lost completely before seeking treatment. This results from a lack of knowledge of what could be done to conserve sight, the irreversible nature of many eye diseases, the distances involved in travelling to the clinic, and even a lack of knowledge of its existence.  相似文献

Seven per cent of a sample group of civil service employees were found to have diagnosable heart disease. The diagnosis was made on the basis of a complete physical examination and history taken by a specialist in internal medicine and/or heart disease. In addition a questionnaire form related to symptoms of heart disease was filled out by the patient, and various laboratory tests were made. As a technique in cardiac case-finding, the electrocardiogram was the best single device. Of all the cases of heart disease in this survey 65 per cent were detected from tracings obtained by using all 12 leads, and 57 per cent if only the three standard limb leads were taken; but of the presumably normal persons, 13 per cent would be erroneously suspected of possible heart disease by this technique. Heart disease was detected in 50 per cent of the diagnosed cases on the basis of answers to three of the questions in the questionnaire. Eighteen per cent of normal persons would also have been suspected of having heart disease by this case-finding device. Although the survey reported did not develop a simple cardiac case-finding technique, the data presented indicated that a questionnaire history-form, if judiciously used and evaluated, may be of value to physicians who examine large numbers of patients who are unwilling to submit to a complete cardiac evaluation.  相似文献

Tooth dimensions in 104 males and females with agenesis of one or more permanent teeth, other than third molars, have been examined. The amounts of size reduction from normal in mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth diameters appear to be independent. Also some apparent differences from normal tooth size variability were noted. Interestingly, first molars and canines, both considered to be stable components of the dentition, showed significant variability in tooth size. In addition the incidence of individual tooth agenesis within this sample was noted and maxillary lateral incisor was most frequently absent in both sexes.  相似文献

This report of eight years' experience with extrauterine pregnancy by a single gynecologist is an exposition of how the diagnosis was made or why it was missed. Of 26 diagnoses of ectopic pregnancy, five were false (20 per cent); and in three cases (10 per cent) the diagnosis was not made promptly-a total error of 30 per cent. Ectopic pregnancy will be discovered earlier if obstetric patients are always examined shortly after missing the first menstrual period.A palpable adnexal mass was present in 19 of 21 ectopic pregnancies (90 per cent). A mass was palpable in only one of five cases erroneously diagnosed as ectopic pregnancy (20 per cent).Decidual casts were passed by four patients, two of whom did not have ectopic pregnancy. If two gynecologists do not agree on the question of extrauterine pregnancy, a third opinion should be sought or culdoscopy employed. Osteopetrosis is an inherited metabolic disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of bone. This is associated with an osteoclast deficiency. Osteopetrosis is always accompanied by the failure and/or delay of tooth eruption. The present study was conducted to examine in detail the morphological and histological changes of growth of the third molars in the osteopetrosis (op/op) mouse. At the age of 10 days, normal and op/op mice showed no detectable difference in the shape of the third molar follicles. However, the third molars in the op/op mouse became obscured by the proliferation of neighboring bone trabeculae. Moreover, no tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells were detected on the bone surfaces of 10-day-old op/op mice. Ankylosis between the root dentin and proliferating bone trabeculae was a common feature in the 20- and 30-day-old op/op mice. The third molars erupted into the oral cavity before the age of 30 days in normal mice, and the crowns, roots, and periodontal ligaments appeared well developed. Throughout the experiment, it seemed that the primary cause of the microdontia and ankylosis of the developing root in the mutant mouse was a deficiency of osteoclasts, with attendant lack of bone remodeling.  相似文献

Four hundred and forty pediatric patients at the age of 7 days to 15 years with various infections admitted to the Hospital within a month were examined. The biological material was inoculated to blood agar on the first days of the patient admittance to the Hospital and after the growth the organisms were isolated and identified. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolates was assayed with the disk diffusion method. 479 strains in all were tested. The most frequent cases requiring hospitalization and antibiotic therapy were those of respiratory tract infections (54.09 per cent), urinary tract infections (26.36 per cent), cutaneous and subcutaneous fat diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and others (about 25 per cent of the cases in all). The main pathogens were Streptococcus viridans, S.aureus and S.epidermidis, as well as Enterobacteriaceae (chiefly E.coli) whose frequencies were practically equal (in 25-35 per cent of the cases). The Pneumococcus isolates amounted to 6.3 per cent. Nonfermenting bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter) and some representatives of Enterobacteriaceae (Citrobacter, Serratia, Morganella) were isolated from 7 per cent of the patients. The frequency of Klebsiella and Enterobacter was about 11 per cent. The main pathogens were tested for their susceptibility to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, ampicillin, oxacillin and gentamicin. The least active antibiotic was ampicillin. 88.8 per cent of the E.coli isolates and 100 per cent of the Klebsiella, P.mirabilis, Morganella, Citrobacter, Enterobacter and Serratia isolates were resistant to it. 53.2 per cent of the Streptococcus isolates including 64.5 per cent of the Pneumococcus isolates were as well resistant to ampicillin. 59.5 per cent of the Streptococcus isolates (mainly S.viridans and Enterococcus) was susceptible to oxacillin, 22.2 per cent of them being moderately susceptible. 62.5 per cent of the Pneumococcus isolates and 78.1 per cent of the Staphylococcus isolates were also susceptible to oxacillin. The highest susceptibility of the isolates was that to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, i.e. 90.1 per cent of the strains, 79.9 per cent of them being highly susceptible. All the isolates of Citrobacter, Serratia and Morganella and some isolates of P.aeruginosa, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Klebsiella and E.coli were resistant to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid. As for the latter 5 organisms their susceptibility to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid was comparable with that to gentamicin. The susceptibility of the Streptococcus and Staphylococcus isolates to amoxycillin/clavulanic acid was significantly much higher than that to oxacillin, gentamicin and ampicillin: 93 per cent of the Streptococcus isolates (62.7 per cent of the Pneumococcus isolates) and 90.7 per cent of the Staphylococcus isolates.  相似文献

The relationship of abnormal mucosal microtopography with distribution of Trichostrongylus colubriformis in the small intestines of lambs. International Journal for Parasitology4: 153–163. The distribution of T. colubriformis was studied by counting worms in sequential 1-m segments from the guts of 14 infected lambs. Mucosal morphology was described at corresponding 1-m intervals and compared with similar samples from uninfected controls. A mean of 90 per cent of worms was recovered in the first 6 metres of gut. Maximum worm counts occurred in the first (eight lambs) second (three lambs) or third (three lambs) metre. Less than 0·8 per cent of worms were found in the abomasa of five lambs. Flat mucosae or abnormal surface patterns were seen frequently in the anterior small intestine of infected lambs. Degree of mucosal abnormality was positively associated with magnitude of worm numbers/m, and negatively correlated with distance of the sample from the pylorus, by analysis of partial correlation of worm numbers/m, mucosal type score, and distance from the pylorus. Mucosae from areas with > 4000 worms/m tended to have significantly shorter villi than intestine of control lambs. Factors influencing worm distribution and pattern of establishment are discussed, as is the association of extreme villus atrophy with poor performance by infected lambs.  相似文献

The regeneration response of mature and immature rice embryos from 15 rice varieties (Oryza sativa L. var. indica) was separately measured in terms of regeneration per cent and total number of regenerated plantlets obtained for a fixed sample size per variety, when cultured on standard MS media. The response of the rice varieties was classed as high, medium or poor, based on the above criteria. The regeneration per cent of genotypes showing high, medium and poor response ranged from 67 to 97, 38 to 63 and 0 to 36 respectively. The variation in the regeneration response amongst the defined groups was found to be statistically significant in terms of regeneration per cent and total plantlets for a constant sample size when subjected to one way analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test. Only small influences on regeneration frequency were found when the most and least responsive genotypes, Binnatoa and BR-23 were cultured on N6 and MS media with additional or different supplements.  相似文献

High variability in the dentition of Homo can create uncertainties in the correct identification of isolated teeth. For instance, standard tooth identification criteria cannot determine with absolute certainty if an isolated tooth is a second or third maxillary molar. In this contribution, using occlusal fingerprint analysis, we reassess the identification of Krapina D58 (Homo neanderthalensis), which is catalogued as a third maxillary molar. We have hypothesized that the presence/absence of the distal occlusal wear facets can be used to differentiate second from third maxillary molars. The results obtained confirm our hypothesis, showing a significant difference between second and third maxillary molars. In particular we note the complete absence of Facets 7 and 10 in all third molars included in this analysis. The presence of these facets in Krapina D58 eliminates the possibility that it is a third maxillary molar. Consequently it should be reclassified as a second molar. Although this method is limited by the degree of dental wear (i.e., unworn teeth cannot be analyzed) and to individual molars in full occlusion, it can be used for tooth identification when other common criteria are not sufficient to discriminate between second and third maxillary molars. The focus of this article is the pattern of party political preferences among the fast‐growing and increasingly politically significant Hispanic population. The source of our data is the 1990 City University of New York [CUNY] National Survey of Religious Identification, a nationally representative sample that includes 4,868 Hispanic adult respondents. One unique aspect of our large data set is that for the first time we disaggregate the one‐third who are Protestant and of No Religion from the Roman Catholic majority of Hispanics in order to see how religious identification affects political outlook. We found that Hispanics are most likely to be Democrats: 41 per cent, compared with 27 per cent who identified as Independents and 24 per cent as Republicans. Our research suggests that Hispanics are rapidly adopting mainstream American political characteristics. As a whole, the Hispanic population politically resembles non‐Hispanic white America more closely than it does black America. Among Hispanics, Protestantism and higher income favour the Republicans, and femaleness and older age assist the Democrats. The local political environment and individual social attributes are the determining factors in Hispanic political preferences. In fact, the geographical variable, state of residency, has the strongest effect on Democratic Party preference in the multivariate analysis. Overall, the dynamics of social trends among Hispanics seem to favour the Republican Party.  相似文献

The mathematical expression of the signal to noise ratio in fluorescence fluctuation experiments is derived for arbitrary sample profiles and for any mechanism of translational motion, and experimentally verified. The signal to noise ratio depends on the mean count rate per particle per dwell time, the mean number of particles per sample volume, time characteristics of the correlation function, sample profile characteristics, and the data collection time. Statistical accuracy of the third order moment of fluorescence intensity fluctuations is also studied. Summary The effectiveness of three different strains ofRhizobium trifolii on a diploid and a tetraploid variety of red clover (Trifolium pratense) grown in aseptic mineral-agar culture was compared. It was found that with two of the rhizobial strains tested, the tetraploid plants were slower to nodulate than the diploid plants, but that a hundred per cent nodulation was obtained in both cases. With the third strain, however, a sixty-six per cent nodulation of the diploid plants was reduced to an eight per cent nodulation of the tetraploids.In general, over a given period, fewer nodules were formed on the tetraploid plants, but these tended to be larger than on the diploids. The fresh weight of the tetraploid plants always exceeded that of the diploids, but less so in cases of poorly nodulated plants.  相似文献
