Summary The ommatidia in the dorsal eye of male Bibio marci (March flies) are comprised of eight retinula cells (R1–8). In the distal region, the open rhabdomeres of retinula cells 1–6 are arranged in a symmetrically circular pattern with their microvilli directed radially. Immediately beneath the crystalline cone, cell 7 forms a rhabdomere that is about 1 m long and lies in the center of the circle formed by the rhabdomeres of cells 1–6. For the remaining length of an ommatidium it is replaced by the rhabdomere of retinula cell 8. The cell body of this retinula cell almost encloses its own rhabdomere by forming a deep invagination. Consequently, no ommatidial cavity is present. In the left eye rhabdomeres R 3, 5 and 6 first twist clockwise along their longitudinal axes, while rhabdomeres R1, 2, 4 and 8 twist counterclockwise. Opposite twisting is observed in the right eye. The twist rate varies along the length of the rhabdomeres. In a middle region of 60 m, within which the direction of twist does not change, the maximal twist rates are approximately 2°–5°/m in R1–6 and even higher in R 8. In a proximal region, the direction of twist is reversed, but the initial orientation of the microvilli not reestablished. Both the cross-sectional shape of the rhabdomeres and their geometric arrangement in the retinula change along with the twisting. It is substantiated that the rhabdomeric twist is not due to artifactual deformation.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 4: E 2)The authors thank Dr. I. de la Motte for providing the material used in this study, Prof. H. Abstract An unusual new species of the gall-inducing scale insect genus Apiomorpha Rübsaamen is described from Queensland. The adult female, its gall, and the first-instar nymph (crawler) are illustrated, and relationships of the new species are estimated using mitochondrial COII data. Adult females induce cigar-shaped galls on leaves of several eucalypts in section Adnataria of subgenus Symphyomyrtus . The bilobed anal lobes of the adult female differ from those of all other Apiomorpha species (single lobe) and the first-instar nymph possesses features, such as broad frontal tubercles and dorsal stripes, that are not present in crawlers of other Apiomorpha species. However, DNA sequence data confirm that the new species falls within Apiomorpha , rather than representing a sister group, and indicate that the new species is not closely related to the A. pharetrata (Schrader) species-group, the only other group within Apiomorpha that induces cigar-shaped galls on leaves. The systematic affiliations of A. gullanae sp. n. are currently not known. Females only are known and there is some indication that reproduction in the new taxon is parthenogenetic. This represents the first putative case of parthenogenesis in Apiomorpha .  相似文献

Scale insects are commonly associated with obligate, intracellular microorganisms which play important roles in complementing their hosts with essential nutrients. Here we characterized the symbiotic system of Greenisca brachypodii, a member of the family Eriococcidae. Histological and ultrastructural analyses have indicated that G. brachypodii is stably associated with coccoid and rod‐shaped bacteria. Phylogenetic analyses have revealed that the coccoid bacteria represent a sister group to the secondary symbiont of the mealybug Melanococcus albizziae, whereas the rod‐shaped symbionts are close relatives of Arsenophonus symbionts in insects – to our knowledge, this is the first report of the presence of Arsenophonus bacterium in scale insects. As a comparison of 16S and 23S rRNA genes sequences of the G. brachypodii coccoid symbiont with other gammaprotebacterial sequences showed only low similarity (~90%), we propose the name ‘Candidatus Kotejella greeniscae’ for its tentative classification. Both symbionts are transovarially transmitted from one generation to the next. The infection takes place in the neck region of the ovariole. The bacteria migrate between follicular cells, as well as through the cytoplasm of those cells to the perivitelline space, where they form a characteristic ‘symbiont ball’. Our findings provide evidence for a polyphyletic origin of symbionts of Eriococcidae.  相似文献

A new genus and species of stick insect is described and figured from Mount Halcon, on the Philippine island of Mindoro. Conlephasma enigma gen. et sp. n. is a stout, flightless, and apparently ground-dwelling species with vivid integumental colors. When disturbed, specimens spray a defensive secretion from the prothoracic exocrine glands. The systematic position of Conlephasma within Euphasmatodea is unclear. The elongated galealobulus and the trichome area located laterally in the galea, represent unusual apomorphic characters of the maxilla that could indicate affinities with Necrosciinae or Pseudophasmatinae. All tibiae exhibit the anareolate condition. Euplantulae are of two types: those of tarsomeres I–IV feature a nubby microstructure, whilst the one on the ventral side of the pretarsus is smooth. Males are characterized by the presence of a well-developed vomer on the tenth abdominal segment. A distinctive and apomorphic trait of female terminalia is represented by the elongated tenth abdominal tergum. Conlephasma can represent an interesting taxon for studies on the evolution of the stick and leaf insects.  相似文献

External morphological features of adult males are described in the stick insect Hermarchus leytensis from the Philippines, a species belonging to the little-known euphasmatodean lineage Stephanacridini. Mouthparts are characterized by some likely specialized features: (1) a dentate dorsal cutting edge on the mandibles; (2) distinct differences in size and shape between the galeae; (3) absence of an apical field of trichomes on the galeae; and (4) lacinial setae not protruding from the mesal margin, which features three bearing-like protuberances. The latter character state represents a very unusual condition, not known in other phasmatodeans or even in polyneopteran insects. A distinctive characteristic of attachment devices is that each euplantula is divided into two separated pads with a smooth microstructure, as it also occurs in some members of the clade Schizodecema. Male terminalia exhibit character states previously unknown in Stephanacridini, including (1) a symmetrical type of vomer and (2) claspers equipped with ∼70 very minute ventral teeth on each thorn pad. Potential implications for the systematic placement of H. leytensis are discussed. The results also underline the importance of microanatomical investigations as source of substantial characters for future analyses on phasmatodean systematics.  相似文献

Summary Intact armyworm moths (Spodoptera exempta, Farn. Noctuidae) were illuminated by polarized monochromatic light to induce structural changes in the rhabdomeres of the compound eyes. The degree of distortion of their microvilli depends on the light energy absorbed per time unit. Under polarized light, the number of quanta absorbed varies with the position of the plane of polarization relative to the axis of the microvilli (intrinsic dichroism). Therefore, in Spodoptera, different degrees of deformations could be demonstrated in differently oriented rhabdomeres of both types of ommatidia. Moreover, in rhabdoms of the lobed type with fan-like arranged microvilli, different reactions were regularly seen in differently oriented microvilli of one rhabdomere. This indicates that microvilli may react to light individually.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Sonderforschungsbereich 114 (Bionach)  相似文献

Summary The double cone of the turtle retina was reconstructed three-dimensionally from electron micrographs of 400 serial sections. Cytoplasm of the accessory cone extends bilaterally to surround the principal cone incompletely. The cytoplasmic extensions are 0.1 m in width and 2 m in length at their longest portions. They arise at approximately the median portion of the ellipsoid (consisting of mitochondria) and terminate at the level of the outer limiting membrane. The possible function of these extensions as a clasping structure is discussed.  相似文献

The status of an extra univalent, if it is a B chromosome or an achiasmatic Y chromosome, associating with the X chromosome in male meiosis of Cacopsylla peregrina (Frst.) (Homoptera, Psylloidea) was analysed. One extra univalent was present in all males collected from three geographically well separated populations, it was mitotically stable, and showed precise segregation from the X chromosome. These findings led us to propose that the univalent represents in fact a Y chromosome. The behaviour of the X and Y chromosomes during meiotic prophase suggested that their regular segregation was based on an achiasmatic segregation mechanism characterised by a 'touch and go' pairing of segregating chromosomes at metaphase I. To explain the formation of the achiasmatic Y within an insect group with X0 sex chromosome system, it was suggested that the Y chromosome has evolved from a mitotically stable B chromosome that was first integrated into an achiasmatic segregation system with the X chromosome, and has later become fixed in the karyotype as a Y chromosome.  相似文献

Summary (1) The distribution of the extracellular space (ECS) in the outer part of the locust compound eye has been mapped with lanthanum and ruthenium red, applied to the retina. (2) In the photoreceptor zone, about 2.4% of the volume is ECS, in agreement with radiotracer and electrical estimates. Of this ECS, about 70% lies in lacunae between ommatidia, but only 1–2% adjacent to the photosensitive rhabdom. The lacunae are filled with material which binds applied tracers, and are thought to be structural spaces. (3) It has been suggested several times that such a small cation pool is insufficient to sustain more than a few large photoresponses, but this is shown to be incorrect. Enough Na+ lies within the rhabdomal ECS and within rapid diffusional access to it, to impose no immediate limitation. (4) The palisade vacuoles surrounding the rhabdom are intracellular, and are typical of light as well as dark-adapted eyes. (5) Tracers fail to penetrate more than about 30 m into the axon zone, in agreement with electrical, dye and radiotracer indications of a blood-eye barrier near this point. Septate and gap junctions between glial membranes proliferate at this level, the lacunae disappear, and the axonal clefts narrow, but no tight junctions were seen. Comparison is made with the barrier around the nerve cord. (6) The secondary pigment cells in the retina may function as osmotic/ionic buffers, in conjunction with the blood-eye barrier.  相似文献

The spermatozoon of Coletinia sp. has a bilayered acrosome, a short nucleus (4 microm) and a relatively short sperm tail with two mitochondrial derivatives. The chromatin is uniformly dense except for several electron-lucid channels or strands which permeate the nucleus and which originate in the spermatid as invaginations of the nuclear envelope. The invaginations occur mostly or exclusively along two meridians of the spermatid that are also characterized by the presence of a longitudinal rod of medium electron density. The two rods (designated as 'mid-spermatid rods') evidently are instrumental in the formation of the electron-lucid channels. The significance of this elaborate system of intranuclear channels is not understood. The sperm tail has a 9 + 9 + 2 axoneme with each of the nine microtubular doublets accompanied by an accessory microtubule; scant intertubular material can also be distinguished. Hence, the tail axoneme resembles that of many pterygote insects. Each of the two mitochondrial derivatives contains a crystalline inclusion that has periodically spaced layers going in different directions on either side of the midline. Two synapomorphic traits appear to be shared by Ateluridae and Nicoletiidae, namely the invaginations of the nuclear membrane along two meridians of the nucleus and the shape of the crystalline inclusions of the mitochondrial derivatives. Four species from the family Lepismatidae were also examined as to their sperm ultrastructure. Three of them, Allacrotelsa kraepelini, Ctenolepisma longicaudata and Ctenolepisma sp., were found to be very similar to the two previously examined lepismatids, Thermobia domestica and Lepisma saccharina. On the other hand, spermatozoa of Tricholepisma aurea were aggregated in small groups rather than pairwise joined as seen in the other lepismatids. Sperm characters are also used to reconstruct a phylogenetic hypothesis which suggests a close relationship between Ateluridae and Nicoletiidae.  相似文献

The distribution of Auchenorrhyncha species assemblages on 174 grassland sites in northern England and Scotland was investigated using ordination and classification techniques. Altitude appeared to be the most important environmental variable influencing assemblage distribution but the effects of altitude on soil type and moisture, and on plant composition, either herbaceous or woody, and structure were likely to have been primary influences. The main differences between sites in the eight habitat groups of the classification were products of these soil and plant variables, with the geographical position of sites in the survey area having less of an effect on site classification. A considerable number of nationally and regionally rare and scarce species were recorded. The results indicate that Auchenorrhyncha could be used in site conservation based on invertebrate species assemblages and rare species distribution but that more information is required to assess both habitat diversity and species rarity. More survey work would also be required to identify appropriate site management procedures for the conservation of Auchenorrhyncha within an overall programme for terrestrial invertebrates.  相似文献

Eight dinucleotide microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized within the green leafhopper Empoasca vitis (Goethe) using an enrichment cloning procedure. Primers were tested on 171 individuals collected in the southwest of France from the vine plants. The identified loci were polymorphic, with allelic diversity ranging from two to 18 alleles per locus. Observed heterozygosities were from 0.021 to 0.760. These microsatellite markers should prove to be a useful tool for estimating the population genetic structure, host-plant specialization and migration capacity of this insect.  相似文献

New and extensively revised keys are given to help identification of the European species of Metopolophium Mordvilko, 1914. The morphs keyed are (1) the apterous viviparous females from Gramineac, (2) the alate viviparous females and (3) the males and oviparous females of those species that overwinter as eggs on Rosa spp. Taxonomic notes are given on some individual species. Two new taxa, M. fasciatum sp. nov., and M. festucae (Theobald) cerealium subsp. nov. are described. Metopolophium myrmecophilum (Theobald) becomes a new synonym of M. festucae (Theobald), sensu stricto , and the resulting question of the possible conservation of the latter, which is the junior subjective synonym, is discussed. A revised checklist of the European species of Metopolophium is given.  相似文献

Willow oyster scale, Lepidosaphes salicina Borchsenius (Homoptera: Diaspididae) is a serious, univoltine, pest of willows and poplars in northern China. Its main natural enemy was Hemisarcoptes sp. (Acari: Astigmata: Hemisarcoptidae), which attacks eggs, nymphs, immature males and females of the scale. Mite prevalence was greatest during June, on 2nd-instar female nymphs of the pest. The numerical responses and density dependencies of the mite on L. salicina are discussed in relation to field data. More scales were parasitized on the eastern and northern sides of the trees, which had more scales, than on their souther and western aspects. Another diaspidid, Quadraspidiotus gigas (Thiem and Gerneck), was also attacked on poplars by Hemisarcoptes sp.  相似文献

In the two studied subspecies of Coregonus lavaretus , the pollan ( C. l. wartmanni ) (which lives deep in the pelagial) and the gangfish ( C. l. macrophthalmus ) (which lives near the slope, closer to the bottom), duplex retinae containing rod and cone photoreceptors are found. Four morphologically different cone types were observed: unequal double cones, short single cones, long single cones and triple cones. The cones are arranged in a square pattern (four double cones around a central short single cone) in the ventral and ventrotemporal and in a row pattern in the nasal and dorsal areas of the retina. Moreover, intermediate patterns can be observed in several regions indicating that double cone twisting occurs, i.e. double cones twist about their longitudinal axis. The highest cone densities are found in the ventrotemporal area. Conversely, the rod photoreceptor density is the highest in the dorsal retina. While the basic morphology of the retina is the same in both subspecies, the distribution of long single and triple cones differs between the studied animals. While these cone types are very rare in the pollan, they are common in the gangfish, though not exhibiting a regular pattern. The findings are discussed with regard to the photic habitat conditions, the systematic position of coregonids and variation of retinal morphology in the two subspecies.  相似文献

Summary Using a radioimmunoassay developed for the determination of crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP), immunoreactive material was detected in extracts of locust nervous tissue. Serial dilutions of a brain extract gave a displacement curve parallel to the CCAP standard curve. One locust nervous system was calculated to contain approximately 1.4 pmol CCAP-like material. In order to investigate whether the immunoreactive substance was similar or identical to the crustacean neuropeptide, isolation and complete characterization was carried out using 800 locust nervous systems. The isolation procedure consisted of pre-purification of the crude extract on a Sep-Pak cartridge, affinity chromatography on a column which was prepared by coupling of anti-CCAP antibody to CNBr-activated Sepharose, and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the HPLC-profile immunoreactivity was confined to a single peak which co-chromatographed with authentic CCAP. The peptide was carboxymethylated and analyzed in an automated gas-phase sequencer. Its amino acid sequence, is identical to that of CCAP fromCarcinus maenas.Synthetic CCAP was tested on the isolated locust hindgut in vitro. The peptide proved to be a potent enhancer of gut contractions, with a significant effect being observable at concentrations of 10–10 M. It is concluded that in the locust CCAP may function as a myotropic peptide.  相似文献
