Variation in laying date, clutch-size and number of fledglings of the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca was studied in relation to altitude, habitat and latitude, using data from 99 breeding areas from 35̀ N to 70̀ N. Laying date significantly increased with altitude and showed a significant quadratic relationship with latitude, with the earliest values at about 50̀ N. This quadratic relationship shows the same pattern as the relationship between arrival time of adults on the breeding areas and latitude. Clutch-size variation was significantly related to altitude and habitat, small clutches being laid at high altitude and in coniferous forests. Number of fledglings was significantly affected by habitat type, with lower values in the coniferous than in the deciduous forest. Mean clutch-size and mean number of fledglings showed the same quadratic relationship with latitude. In contrast to some earlier studies, an increased clutch-size with latitude was found, mainly because of new data from areas in the southern part of the species' distribution.  相似文献

An analysis of clutch-size in New World passerine birds   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
GEORGE KULESZA 《Ibis》1990,132(3):407-422
Variation in clutch-size among New World passerine birds was analysed with respect to four variables: body-mass, geographic latitude, the frequency of nest predation, and the structure of the nest. Data were analysed separately by averaging traits at three taxonomic levels: species, genus, and subfamily. Allometric scaling with body-mass did not account for significant variation in clutch-size regardless of the taxonomic level of analysis. Latitudinal effects on clutch-size were highly significant at all taxonomic levels. For species building small-pensile nests and open-cup nests, nest predation had a significant partial effect on clutch-size, with latitude held constant. When nest predation and latitude were held constant, clutch-size was significantly different among species building small-pensile nests, open-cup nests, and domed nests. These results suggest that New World passerine clutch-size is related to at least three variables: latitudinal effects, nest predation, and nest structure.  相似文献

Across altitudinal and latitudinal gradients, the proportion of suitable habitats varies, influencing the individual dispersal that ultimately can produce differentiation among populations. The natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) is distributed across a wide geographic range that qualifies the species as interesting for a geographic analysis of its genetic variability. Five populations of B. calamita in the Sierra de Gredos (Spain) were studied in an altitudinal gradient ranging from 750 to 2270 m using microsatellite markers. In addition, we analyzed the latitudinal genetic variation in B. calamita within a global European distribution using genetic diversity parameters (mean number of alleles per locus [M(a)] and expected heterozygosity [H(E)]) obtained from our results and those published in the literature. The low level of genetic differentiation found between populations of B. calamita (F(st) ranging from 0.0115 to 0.1018) and the decreases in genetic diversity with altitude (M(a) from 13.6 to 8.3, H(E) from 0.82 to 0.74) can be interpreted by the combined effects of discontinuous habitat, produced mainly by the high slopes barriers and geographic distance. In the latitudinal gradient, genetic diversity decreases from south to north as a consequence of the colonization of the species from the Pleistocene refugium. We conclude that the genetic variability in B. calamita along its wide altitudinal and latitudinal geographic distribution mainly reflects the colonization history of the species after the last glacial period.  相似文献

Aim To investigate latitudinal and altitudinal patterns in body size variation among north‐west European land snail species, as well as factors influencing such patterns. Location Latitudinal patterns were investigated in north‐west Europe from the British Isles and France in the west to Finland, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the east and from Norway in the north to France (with the exception of the Mediterranean part of the country), Switzerland, Austria and Hungary in the south. Altitudinal patterns were examined in the Alps in Austria and Switzerland. Methods Data on latitudinal ranges of 366 north‐west European land snail species, on altitudinal ranges of 175 species from Austria and 150 species from Switzerland, and on their body sizes were used to test for the presence of interspecific latitudinal or altitudinal body size patterns. Four methods, Stevens’ method, the midpoint method, the across‐species method, and a phylogenetically controlled analysis (CAIC) were applied. Results As a result of the predominance of some small bodied clades at higher latitudes and some large bodied clades at lower latitudes, body size of north‐west European land snails decreases significantly with increasing latitude. However, little of the body size variation across species is explained by latitude and the phylogenetically controlled analysis showed that the decrease of body size with increasing latitude is not a result of repeated and independent evolution of an association between body size and latitude in many clades. There is no significant correlation between body size of land snail species and altitude in the Alps although a negative correlation of body size and altitude is frequent within species. Main conclusion If phylogenetic effects are controlled for, neither latitudinal nor altitudinal patterns in body size could be found. Bergmann's rule, which predicts a positive correlation between body size of species and latitude, could not be confirmed for north‐west European land snails.  相似文献

Despite the growing literature on the underlying factors of geographical phenotypic variation, little is known about how and to what extent biogeographic barriers in South‐East Asia have shaped morphological variation in primates. We aimed to investigate the geographical variations in skull morphology in dusky leaf monkeys by decomposing them into clinal (latitudinal), non‐clinal spatial (discrete difference between regions north and south of the Isthmus of Kra), and environment‐related components. We applied geometric morphometrics to measure 53 adult male specimens from 36 localities, covering the regions both north and south of the Isthmus of Kra. A linear model was used to test the effects of region (north vs. south of the Isthmus of Kra), latitude, and environmental factors (temperature and rainfall) on the size and shape of skulls. A part of variation in skull shape differed moderately between the regions in the north and south of the Isthmus of Kra, and this difference cannot be explained by latitudinal and environmental factors. However, for size and the majority of variations in shape, we detected limited contributions of region and the two environmental factors. Shape differentiation that was unexplained by latitudinal and environmental factors suggests that dusky leaf monkeys may have experienced a population division due to habitat constriction around the Isthmus of Kra. However, this divergence probably has been obscured by subsequent gene flow between populations after habitat recovery.  相似文献

The lacertid lizard ( Gallotia stehlini ), an endemic of Gran Canaria, shows no visually obvious geographic variation, yet all seven scalation characters that were examined exhibit significant geographic variation. The number of collar scales, scales along the ventral trunk and femoral pores are correlated with habitat type, while the number of femoral pores is correlated negatively with altitude. Mantel tests were used to compare simultaneously an observed pattern with three hypothesized patterns (habitat type, altitude and proximity). They indicate that, while several individual characters are significantly associated with the putative causal factors of habitat type and altitude, there is no association between an overall scalation distance matrix and habitat type, or altitude when the effect of proximity is removed. Consequently, one should consider the individual characters as well as the multivariate generalized distances. Some of the observed patterns of geographic variation in scalation are very similar to those of the small scincid lizard Chalcides sexlineatus on Gran Canaria and also parallel the altitudinal and latitudinal variation in the scalation of the Tenerife lacertid ( Galotia galloti ). The low level of congruence in patterns of geographic variation in individual characters (i.e. some vary with latitude, some with altitude and one varies with longitude) is consistent with the hypothesis that ecogenetically caused geographic variation may result in lower inter-character congruence than phylogenetically caused geographic variation.  相似文献

Aim We investigated the relationship between host and parasite diversity as well as latitudinal gradients in parasite diversity on a continental scale in European freshwater trematodes. Location European freshwaters. Methods We extracted distributional data for 564 freshwater trematodes across 25 biogeographical regions in Europe from the Limnofauna Europaea and used multiple regression analyses to test for correlations between the diversity of definitive (vertebrates) or first intermediate (gastropods) hosts and that of trematodes, and for latitudinal gradients in trematode diversity. In particular, we investigated patterns in beta diversity among latitudinal bands and between trematode species that parasitize host groups with low (autogenic) and high (allogenic) dispersal capacity. We also tested for a latitudinal gradient in the proportional representation of these two trematode groups within regional faunas. Results Latitude or first intermediate host richness had no effect on trematode richness, but definitive host richness was a strong predictor of trematode richness, among both allogenic and autogenic parasites. We found that beta diversity of trematode faunas within latitudinal bands decreased to the north, with similar values for allogenic and autogenic trematodes. Finally, we observed an increasing proportion of autogenic species toward the north of Europe. Main conclusions The richness of definitive hosts appears to be the driver of trematode diversity at a continental scale. The latitudinal gradient in beta diversity reflects patterns observed in free‐living species and probably results from recolonization in the aftermath of the ice ages. The similar beta‐diversity patterns of allogenic and autogenic trematodes and the increasing proportion of autogenic trematodes with increasing latitude are surprising. We suggest that the geographical scale of our analysis or confounding factors such as differences in habitat utilization and specialization may partly explain these patterns.  相似文献

South Island Saddlebacks Philesturnus carunculatus carunculatus were once found throughout the South Island of New Zealand, but by the early 1960s were confined to the island of Big South Cape, in the extreme south of the country. All subsequent reintroduced populations of South Island Saddlebacks are derived from 36 surviving birds from this relict population. The aim of this study was to compare the breeding success of three recently reintroduced populations of Saddlebacks relative to their distance from, and habitat similarity to, the relict population. The three study islands show a latitudinal cline with Ulva, Breaksea and Motuara Islands located 60, 190 and 810 km north of Big South Cape, respectively. Saddlebacks on Ulva and Breaksea appeared to prefer to establish breeding territories in coastal scrub, the dominant habitat feature of Big South Cape. The area of coastal scrub habitat was much smaller on Motuara, where breeding territories were instead scattered through broadleaf forest habitat. Nesting success, calculated using Mayfield's method, was significantly greater on Ulva (73%) than on Breaksea (32%) or Motuara (19%) owing primarily to higher egg fertility and hatching success. Although egg failure rates were highest on Motuara, the island least similar to Big South Cape, they were also relatively high on Breaksea where the habitat was similar to Ulva and Big South Cape. Therefore, the results only partially support the hypothesis that nesting success should decrease with increasing habitat difference associated with increasing latitudinal distance from the source population. The data from this 1-year study lay the groundwork for examining further hypotheses on the effects of reintroducing endangered species outside their contemporary range, but within their historical range.  相似文献

Phytosociological parameters, soil and temperature conditions, importance values of species, life form, leaf size and grass biomass in vegetation of Pirghar Hills, South Waziristan Agency, Pakistan, were investigated during summer 1995. The air and soil temperatures were higher on south facing slopes which decreased with increase in altitude. The vegetation, life form and leaf size of south and north slopes differed at similaraltitudes. Leptophyllous species increased with the rise in altitude. The fresh herbage production was 500 g m-2 at 2000 m on north slope which gradually decreased to 170 g m-2 at the hill top. A similar trend was observed for the south slope which had higher productivity than comparable north slope. The original woody species are present on the hills as isolated individuals due to degradation. There is need for restoration of the habitat.  相似文献

Theoretical models of the advantage of sexual reproduction typically assume that reproductive output is equal in sexual and parthenogenetic females. We tested this assumption by comparing fecundity between parthenogenetic and sexual races of gekkonid lizards in the Heteronotia binoei complex, collected across a 1200 km latitudinal gradient through the Australian arid zone. Under laboratory conditions, parthenogenetic geckos had approximately 30% lower fecundity when compared with their sexual progenitors, irrespective of body size. Reflecting clutch-size constraints in gekkonids, this fecundity difference was mainly because of fewer clutches over a shorter period. When parthenogens were compared more broadly with all coexisting sexual races across the latitudinal gradient, parthenogens had lower fecundity than sexuals only when corrected for body size. Differences in fecundity between parthenogens and coexisting sexual races depended on which sexual race was considered. There was no significant relationship between fecundity and parasite (mite) load, despite significantly higher mite loads in parthenogens than in sexual races.  相似文献

We analysed the range-sizes of 835 Andean passerine species (including 414 endemics and 421 non-endemics) to test for latitudinal and altitudinal Rapoport effects (LRE and ARE). We tested for positive range-size: latitude/altitude correlations using three different methods: (i) Rohde's mid-point method, (ii) species sorted out by altitude, and (iii) a phylogenetic comparative method (CAIC). Using Rohde's mid-point method, the mean latitudinal extent of species does not follow a Rapoport pattern, but the mean latitudinal occupancy of all passerines and non-endemics do increase with latitude. The latitudinal ranges of endemics sorted out by altitude follow a reverse Rapoport effect, but non-endemics support the pattern. CAIC confirms the latitudinal increase in the occupancy of non-endemics, but regressions have low coefficients of determination. The ARE is supported by the mean altitudinal extent of species, but the trend vanishes when controlling for geometric effects. Low-altitude species occupy about the same proportion of the available altitudinal space as do high-altitude ones. Our analyses suggest that latitude and altitude have low explanatory power for understanding the spatial variation in range-sizes at a continental scale. We show how different patterns can emerge from applying different criteria to the analysis of data.

Previous studies provide evidence that cavity size influences clutch-size and reproductive success in some hole-nesting birds, because overcrowding in cavities may cause brood mortality due to trampling or hyperthermia. We tested this hypothesis with two experiments at nestbox populations of Tree Swallows Tachycineta bicolor in southeastern Ontario. Female Tree Swallows showed a preference for nesting in large boxes over small ones in the first experiment, and they laid significantly smaller clutches in small nestboxes during both experiments. Differences in clutch–size between large and small nestboxes could not be attributed to other factors known to influence clutch-size in birds (e.g. parental quality, habitat quality, laying date). Reproductive success, however, did not differ between pairs using the two box types during either experiment, nor did it differ during within-clutch-size comparisons between box types. Some measures of nestling quality were significantly lower for broods in large boxes, but during most comparisons there were no differences. These results do not support the adaptive reason for why cavity size affects clutch-size. We suggest that broods in our experiments did not experience the microhabitat conditions necessary to induce the expected differences in brood mortality.  相似文献

Increased population density often reduces reproductive output in breeding birds, but the underlying mechanisms (adaptive restraint v reduced food resources) behind decreased productivity are poorly understood. Here I correlatively and experimentally investigated the roles of food, breeding density, latitude, altitude and rainfall in limiting productivity of Wahlberg's Eagles Aquila wahlbergi throughout Africa. Breeding success in equatorial and subtropical Africa (0°–30°S) was highly density-dependent but showed no latitudinal or rainfall-related trends. Pairs in dense populations produced half as many young annually as pairs in low-density populations. Density (but not rainfall or latitude) also explained much of the geographic variation in the mean proportion of pairs attempting to breed each year and the incidence of two-egg clutches.
Breeding within populations was consistent with these density-dependent trends: incidence of two-egg clutches increased in a declining population, and productivity was inversely related to breeding density and rainfall combined. To determine if reduced food resources accounted for reduced output in dense populations, eight pairs were food supplemented: supplementary food failed to induce nonbreeding pairs to breed: nor did it induce earlier laying or increase egg size or clutch-size. Population density itself was unrelated to two correlates of food resources, rainfall and latitude. I conclude that population density influences most aspects of breeding in Wahlberg's Eagles, and reduced food resources do not appear to explain these trends. Hence, adaptive restraint may account for decreased annual reproduction in this species.  相似文献

Changes in abiotic factors along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients cause powerful environmental gradients. The topography of alpine areas generates environmental gradients over short distances, and alpine areas are expected to experience greater temperature increase compared to the global average. In this study, we investigate alpha, beta, and gamma diversity, as well as community structure, of vascular plant communities along altitudinal gradients at three latitudes in the Swedish mountains. Species richness and evenness decreased with altitude, but the patterns within the altitudinal gradient varied between sites, including a sudden decrease at high altitude, a monotonic decrease, and a unimodal pattern. However, we did not observe a decline in beta diversity with altitude at all sites, and plant communities at all sites were spatially nested according to some other factors than altitude, such as the availability of water or microtopographic position. Moreover, the observed diversity patterns did not follow the latitudinal gradient. We observed a spatial modularity according to altitude, which was consistent across sites. Our results suggest strong influences of site‐specific factors on plant community composition and that such factors partly may override effects from altitudinal and latitudinal environmental variation. Spatial variation of the observed vascular plant communities appears to have been caused by a combination of processes at multiple spatial scales.  相似文献

Potential effects of future warming should be reflected in life history patterns of aquatic organisms observed in warmer climates or in habitats that are different in ambient temperature. In the special case of the dragonfly Gomphus vulgatissimus (L.) (Odonata: Gomphidae) previous research suggests that voltinism decreases from south to north. We analysed data on voltinism from 11 sample sites along a latitudinal gradient from about 44°N to 53°N, comprising small streams to medium-sized rivers. Furthermore, to simulate different conditions and to allow projections for future climate change scenarios, we developed a population dynamic model based on a projection matrix approach. The parameters of the model are dependent on temperature and day length. Our field results indicate a decrease in voltinism along the latitudinal gradient from southern to northern Europe and a corresponding increase of voltinism with higher temperatures. An increase in voltinism with width of the running water implies an effect of varying habitat temperature. Under the impact of global warming, our model predicts an increased development speed, particularly in the northern part of the latitudinal gradient, an extension of the northern range limit and changes in phenology of G. vulgatissimus , leading to an extension of the flight season in certain regions along the gradient.  相似文献

Understanding how the temperature sensitivity of phenology changes with three spatial dimensions (altitude, latitude, and longitude) is critical for the prediction of future phenological synchronization. Here we investigate the spatial pattern of temperature sensitivity of spring and autumn phenology with altitude, latitude, and longitude during 1982–2016 across mid‐ and high‐latitude Northern Hemisphere (north of 30°N). We find distinct spatial patterns of temperature sensitivity of spring phenology (hereafter “spring ST”) among altitudinal, latitudinal, and longitudinal gradient. Spring ST decreased with altitude mostly over eastern Europe, whereas the opposite occurs in eastern North America and the north China plain. Spring ST decreased with latitude mainly in the boreal regions of North America, temperate Eurasia, and the arid/semi‐arid regions of Central Asia. This distribution may be related to the increased temperature variance, decreased precipitation, and radiation with latitude. Compared to spring ST, the spatial pattern of temperature sensitivity of autumn phenology (hereafter “autumn ST”) is more heterogeneous, only showing a clear spatial pattern of autumn ST along the latitudinal gradient. Our results highlight the three‐dimensional view to understand the phenological response to climate change and provide new metrics for evaluating phenological models. Accordingly, establishing a dense, high‐quality three‐dimensional observation system of phenology data is necessary for enhancing our ability to both predict phenological changes under changing climatic conditions and to facilitate sustainable management of ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract. The spatial heterogeneity hypothesis predicts a positive relationship between habitat complexity and species diversity: the greater the heterogeneity of a habitat, the greater the number of species in that habitat. On a regional scale, this hypothesis has been proposed to explain the increases in species diversity from the poles to the tropics: the tropics are more diverse because they contain more habitats. On the local scale, the spatial heterogeneity hypothesis suggests that the tropics are more diverse because they contain more microhabitats. The positive relationship between habitat heterogeneity and species diversity, on the local scale, is well documented. In this paper, we test whether habitat heterogeneity on the local scale can explain the latitudinal gradient of species diversity on the regional scale. We determined the latitudinal gradient of species diversity of 305 species of North American grasshoppers using published distribution maps. We compared the slope of this multihabitat (regional-scale) gradient with the slope of a within-habitat (local-scale) gradient in the prairie grasslands. Our results show no significant difference between the slopes at the two scales. We tested the generality of our results by comparing multi- and within-habitat latitudinal gradients of species diversity for ants, scorpions and mammals using data from the literature. These results are in accordance with those from grasshoppers. We can therefore reject the local-scale spatial heterogeneity hypothesis as a mechanism explaining the regional-scale latitudinal gradient of species diversity. We discuss alternative mechanisms that produce this gradient.  相似文献
