Endosymbionts occur in most plant species and may affect interactions among herbivores and their predators through the production of toxic alkaloids. Here, we ask whether effects of mycotoxins produced by the symbiosis of the fungal endophyte Neotyphodium lolii and the grass Lolium perenne are transmitted to the aphidophagous ladybird Coccinella septempunctata when feeding on cereal aphids Rhopalosiphum padi on infected plants. The larval development of coccinellids was extended, while their survival was reduced when feeding exclusively on aphids from infected plants. Ladybirds developing on aphids from infected plants showed reduced fecundity and impaired reproductive performance. Body size and symmetries of ladybird adults were not affected by the endophytes. Consistently strong, negative effects of endophytes on the lifetime performance of ladybirds indicates that mycotoxins are transmitted along food chains, causing significant damage for top predators. Such cascading effects will influence the population dynamics of aphid predators in the long term and could feedback to the primary plant producers.  相似文献

We investigated intraguild predation (IGP) on an aphid parasitoid, Aphelinus asychis Walker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), by the multicolored Asian ladybird, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and used the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) as the prey/host in the laboratory. The ladybirds reared on artificial diet and on aphids consumed more aphids than mummies, while those reared on parasitized aphids consumed similar numbers of aphids and mummies. The ladybirds chose more mummies in treatments when mummies were more abundant, and more aphids when numbers of aphids and mummies were equal, or when aphids were more abundant. However, at all density treatments, rejection rates of mummies (36%) were much greater than of aphids (2%). H. axyridis prey on more aphids than A. asychis mummies, which enhances biological control by the two species. However, prior feeding experience affected subsequent choice, increasing the competition between natural enemies which would reduce their combined effectiveness for biological control.  相似文献

Plant–herbivore interactions are often mediated by plant microorganisms, and the “defensive mutualism” of epichloid fungal endophytes of grasses is an example. These endophytes synthesize bioactive alkaloids that generally have detrimental effects on the performance of insect herbivores, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Our objective was to determine whether changes in the physiology and/or behavior of aphids explain the changes in performance of insects feeding on endophytic plants. We studied the interaction between the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi and the annual ryegrass Lolium multiflorum symbiotic (E+) or not symbiotic (E?) with the fungus Epichloë occultans that can synthesize loline alkaloids. We hypothesized that aphids feeding on E+ plants have higher energetic demands for detoxification of fungal alkaloids, thereby negatively impacting the individual performance, population growth, and structure. Aphids growing on E+ plants had lower values in morphometric and functional variables of individual performance, displayed lower birth rate, smaller population size, and dramatic structural changes. However, aphids exhibited lower values of standard metabolic rate (SMR) on E+ plants, which suggests no high costs of detoxification. Behavioral variables during the first 8 h of feeding showed that aphids did not change the phloem sap ingestion with the presence of fungal endophytes. We hypothesize that aphids may maintain phloem sap ingestion according to their fungal alkaloid tolerance capacity. In other words, when alkaloid concentrations overcome tolerance threshold, ingestion of phloem should decrease, which may explain the observed lower values of SMR in E+ feeding aphids.  相似文献

The commercial preparation of Lecanicillium longisporum, Vertalec® was evaluated for simultaneous suppression of cotton aphid and cucumber powdery mildew on potted cucumber plants. Vertalec was applied onto cucumber plants that had been infested with either cotton aphid, spores of Sphaerotheca fuliginea or both. Irradiation-inactivated Vertalec (II Vertalec) was also applied to an identical series of cucumber plants as a control. The Vertalec was highly pathogenic against adult aphids with an LT50 of 6.9 days. II Vertalec did not affect aphid survival. Application of either active or II Vertalec significantly suppressed spore production of S. fuliginea compared to the water control. For dual control assays, Vertalec applications were made one day after infestation of both aphid and S. fuliginea onto potted cucumbers. Fifteen days after the Vertalec treatments, the numbers of surviving aphids and the production of powdery mildew spores were significantly reduced compared with the water control. The presence of aphids also suppressed S. fuliginea spore production. Our results suggest the potential of a dual role for Vertalec as a microbial control agent of aphids and powdery mildew in cucumber.  相似文献

The foraging behavior of starved and non-starved adult and larval Coccinella septempunctata on groups of plants in the presence of Pandora neoaphidis-infected Acyrthosiphon pisum, uninfected aphids or a mixture of these two prey types was compared. In general results of these studies confirmed the results of previous work comparing foraging behavior on a smaller spatial scale in Petri dishes. However, behaviors were modified in response to spatial complexity, prey quality, and the host plant. Starved C. septempunctata adults and larvae fed for longer and consumed more aphids than non-starved coccinellids. Both larvae and adults fed on infected aphids and in some cases entirely consumed them. This was thought to be due to the ease of capture of infected (dead) aphids and the feeding stimuli provided by the presence of the host plant and, where there was a choice of prey, uninfected aphids in the environment. Both larvae and adults spent the majority of the time foraging in the upper regions of plants and visited more plants when they were not starved or when they were in the presence of less suitable, infected aphid prey.  相似文献

Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wize) Brown & Smith is under development as a mycoinsecticide for control of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia Kurdjumov. Interactions with other natural enemies within the agro-ecosystem, such as the coccinellid Hippodamia convergens Guerin, require evaluation before its potential can be realized. In laboratory bioassays H. convergens adults were sprayed with suspensions of P. fumosoroseus conidia at different concentrations (including potential field rates) and mortality assessed. Although a proportion of coccinellids succumbed to infection (the greatest proportion was 22% when the ladybirds had suffered stress) it is unlikely that they would be at risk from infection as a direct result of a spray application unless there were prolonged periods of high humidity or the coccinellids were stressed. When provided with uninfected or P. fumosoroseus -infected D. noxia cadavers as prey, coccinellids consumed more uninfected aphids. The predators never consumed aphid cadavers from which the fungus was erupting or sporulating. Hippodamia convergens is, therefore, unlikely to be a significant intraguild predator of P. fumosoroseus . Predators contaminated with conidia of P. fumosoroseus using different methods (sprayed coccinellids, coccinellids foraging on sprayed aphids, and those foraging in the presence of sporulating D. noxia cadavers) were able to transfer conidia to healthy D. noxia populations and initiate infection in a proportion of those aphids. The proportion of aphids becoming infected was greatest when the coccinellids became contaminated when foraging amongst sporulating cadavers. Some coccinellids also succumbed to infection under these conditions.  相似文献

Silicon (Si) is one of the most beneficial microelements for several plants, in mediating the growth regulation in horticultural species. This research evaluated the effects of innovative Si-applications on. soilless-grown Cucumis sativus L. and Cucurbita pepo L. Crop growth, powdery mildew incidence and abiotic stress resistance were evaluated. Two experiments were carried out in a nonheated glasshouse on benches. Two new Si treatments (Si–Nanosponge complex, and one experimental fertilizer) were compared with the traditional K2SiO3. Topas® EC 10 was used as control fungicide treatment. Biometric parameters, and incidence and severity of powdery mildew were measured. Cucumis sativus plants showed a severe powdery mildew infection, and no significant effect of the Si treatments was found. Cucurbita pepo plants were initially grown under lower disease pressure conditions, and the positive effect of Si treatments was found. The innovative use of Si–Nanosponge complex and the new experimental fertilizer can be considered a good alternative to traditional compounds for plant growth stimulation.  相似文献

We evaluated the status of native ladybird assemblages in the presence of the non-native ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in three European countries. To achieve this, we assessed the abundance of ladybirds from common host plants in urban areas of Great Britain, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in 2014. We determined (i) the effects of season, host plant, location, abundance of H. axyridis and aphids on the ladybird species assemblage, (ii) the relationship between ladybird abundance and aphid density, (iii) the relationship between diversity of native ladybird species and the abundance of H. axyridis. There was a non-linear relationship between abundance of ladybirds and abundance of aphids but we found the abundance of other ladybird species was not correlated with H. axyridis. We highlight the value of large-spatial scale studies for revealing patterns in community assemblages and ultimately informing understanding of ecosystem resilience.  相似文献

To escape from predators, herbivorous prey could leave their current patch and relocate to an alternative patch. However, when other predators are present on the new patch, prey are again exposed to predation risk. Thus, patch leaving might be affected by the other predators. We studied patch leaving of pea aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in response to ladybird larvae Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on broad bean Vicia faba L. shoots that were offered as patches for aphids. We tested whether shoot leaving was affected by the presence of predators on alternative shoots under laboratory conditions. Odors from alternative shoots were evaluated as possible cues used by aphids to assess predation risk on the shoots. We exposed aphids to odors from alternative shoots with conspecifics plus either adult or larval ladybirds or larval green lacewings Mallada desjardinsi Navas (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). Shoot leaving was reduced only when adult ladybirds were present on the alternative shoots compared with controls (i.e., no predators on the alternative shoots). Odors of both adult ladybirds and of conspecifics being attacked by ladybird larvae were required for reduced leaving. Hence, predation risks on current and alternative patches might affect the antipredator responses of aphids.  相似文献

In agricultural ecosystems, arthropod herbivores and fungal pathogens are likely to colonise the same plant and may therefore affect each other directly or indirectly. The fungus that causes powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis tritici) and cereal aphids are important pests of wheat but interactions between them have seldom been investigated. We studied the effects of powdery mildew of wheat on two cereal aphid species, Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi. We hypothesized that aphid number and size will be smaller on powdery mildew-infected plants than on non-infected plants. In a first experiment we used six commercially available wheat varieties whereas in the second experiment we used a genetically modified (GM) mildew-resistant wheat line and its non-transgenic sister line. Because the two lines differed only in the presence of the transgene and in powdery mildew resistance, experiment 2 avoided the confounding effect of variety. In both experiments, the number of M. dirhodum but not of R. padi was reduced by powdery mildew infection. Transgenic mildew-resistant lines therefore harboured bigger aphid populations than the non-transgenic lines. For both aphid species individual size was mostly influenced by aphid number. Our results indicate that plants that are protected from a particular pest (powdery mildew) became more favourable for another pest (aphids).  相似文献

Chemicals, which mediate the interactions between aphids, ladybirds and ants, are reviewed. Special emphasis is laid on autogenous and plant-derived chemical defence in aphids and ladybirds. Evidences for chemical cues used during foraging and oviposition in ladybirds are assessed. Possible mutualistic interaction between plants and the third trophic level is illustrated by the as yet few reports of indirect plant-defence volatiles induced by aphids or coccids attracting parasitoids or ladybirds. The use of chemical signals allowing aphid parasitoids or ladybirds to squeeze into ant–aphid mutualistic association is briefly described. Questions are raised and hypotheses suggested which could stimulate further research on aphid host-plant influence on ladybird foraging behaviour and fitness, and on the cues used by aphid-web partners for their mutual recognition.  相似文献

The effects of prey density and spatial distribution on prey consumption of the adult predatory ladybird, Harmonia axyridis , were investigated by using a 2 × 2 factorial design in large scale cages. Prey density influenced prey consumption of the ladybirds, and the frequency with which predation occurred was quite different between the prey distributions. The ladybirds consumed a relatively constant and small number of aphids when the prey were uniformly distributed, whereas the number of prey consumed per day when predation occurred was large and much more variable when the prey were contagiously distributed. At high prey density, the number of prey consumed was highest during the first day of the experiment; thereafter, only 10–20 aphids were consumed during the following 3 days. However, these patterns of prey consumption were not observed at low prey density. The percentage of aphids that remained on the host plants when the experiments were terminated was higher at low prey density than at high prey density, suggesting that predator foraging efficiency at low prey density was lower than at high prey density. Ladybirds foraging for high prey density were more frequently observed on the plants with aphids than ladybirds foraging for low prey density. Prey distribution also influenced the frequency of residence of ladybirds on the plants. The different predation patterns observed in the two spatial distributions, in which prey consumption was much more variable for the contagious distribution, might be explained by the difference in prey encounter rate of the predator between the distributions. This study indicated that the ladybirds had limited ability to search out prey over large spatial scales.  相似文献

The ecological consequences of hybridization of microbial symbionts are largely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that hybridization of microbial symbionts of plants can negatively affect performance of herbivores and their natural enemies. In addition, we studied the effects of hybridization of these symbionts on feeding preference of herbivores and their natural enemies. We used Arizona fescue as the host‐plant, Neotyphodium endophytes as symbionts, the bird cherry–oat aphid as the herbivore and the pink spotted ladybird beetle as the predator in controlled experiments. Neither endophyte infection (infected or not infected) nor hybrid status (hybrid and non‐hybrid infection) affected aphid reproduction, proportion of winged forms in the aphid populations, aphid host‐plant preference or body mass of the ladybirds. However, development of ladybird larvae was delayed when fed with aphids grown on hybrid (H+) endophyte infected grasses compared to larvae fed with aphids from non‐hybrid (NH+) infected grasses, non‐hybrid, endophyte‐removed grasses (NH?) and hybrid, endophyte‐removed (H?) grasses. Furthermore, adult beetles were more likely to choose all other types of grasses harboring aphids rather than H+ infected grasses. In addition, development of ladybirds was delayed when fed with aphids from naturally uninfected (E?) grasses compared to ladybirds that were fed with aphids from NH+ and NH? grasses. Our results suggest that hybridization of microbial symbionts may negatively affect generalist predators such as the pink spotted ladybird and protect herbivores like the bird cherry–oat aphids from predation even though the direct effects on herbivores are not evident.  相似文献

Aphid consumption by larval and adult Tachyporus hypnorum (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) in different reproductive states was compared under laboratory conditions. Post-overwintering (spring/summer) adults had a higher consumption rate of first/second instar Sitobion avenae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) than did overwintering adults. Choice experiments incorporating Isotoma viridis (Collembola: Isotomidae) and Sciara thomae (Diptera: Mycetophilidae) as alternative prey items showed that T. hypnorum had a strong preference for aphids at a range of prey frequencies. Numbers of aphids consumed were reduced when leaves infected with Erysiphe graminis f.sp. tritici (powdery mildew of wheat) were offered to beetles with aphids in choice experiments. Behavioural studies of adult T. hypnorum showed that foraging rates on wheat plants increased with increasing amounts of both mildew and aphids on plants. Feeding upon only the conidia of E. graminis was observed. Results are discussed in relation to previous data derived from gut dissection, to a field survey of alternative foods and to the phenology of T. hypnorum in relation to that of aphids in the wheat crop.  相似文献

Wheat powdery mildew, caused by the fungal pathogen Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat in China and causes serious yield losses. Resistance genes are urgently needed by wheat breeding programs to combat this disease. In the present study, genetic analysis of powdery mildew resistance was conducted on segregated F2 and F2:3 populations derived from the cross of Shangeda (providing good resistance to powdery mildew) and Chancellor (susceptible to powdery mildew). The results showed that the resistance of Shangeda to E09 was controlled by a single recessive gene, tentatively designated as PmSGD. In addition, RNA sequencing of the parental lines Shangeda and Chancellor and the corresponding bulked pools derived from homozygous resistant or susceptible F2:3 lines was implemented to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The PmSGD gene was estimated to be located in the 240–250-Mb region of chromosome 7B based on the characteristics of putative SNP loci distributed on 21 wheat chromosomes. Among the developed SNP markers, 17 (57%) markers were linked to PmSGD flanked by SNP2-57 and SNP2-46, with genetic distances of 0.4 and 0.8 cM, respectively. The reaction patterns of Shangeda and cultivars (lines) carrying the Pm5e, Pmhym, mlxbd, and PmTm4 genes to 22 Bgt isolates indicated that PmSGD may be allelic or very closely linked to those genes. All of the SNP loci linked to PmSGD were used to test 38 cultivars with known Pm gene(s), and the results suggested that these SNP loci are useful for pyramiding PmSGD by marker-assisted selection.  相似文献

Ubiquitination plays important roles in disease resistance in plants. We report the identification and functional characterization of the RING-type ubiquitin ligase gene VpUR9 from Chinese wild Vitis pseudoreticulata accession Baihe-35-1. VpUR9, encodes 164 amino acids and possesses a RING conserved motif. It is homologously cloned from the cDNA library of the high powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator [Schw.] Burr) resistant V. pseudoreticulata accession Baihe-35-1 inoculated with E. necator. The gene is induced in response to powdery mildew and salicylic acid. VpUR9 fused with FLAG-tag controlled by 35S promoter was transformed into 15 regenerated V. vinifera L. cv. Red Globe lines via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Twelve of these lines were confirmed by Western blot of FLAG-tag. As a result, the powdery mildew-resistance of Red Globe transformed with VpUR9 was repressed. Furthermore, the expression of some disease-resistant related genes (NPR1, PR1, PR10 and PAL) of the transgenic Red Globe declined compared with wild type grapes when inoculated with powdery mildew or salicylic acid. When treated with jasmonic acid methyl ester, its PR1 gene expression decreased, while the expressions of NPR1, PR10 and PAL all increased, contrasting with the wild type grape.  相似文献

The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) and Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV), serious threats to economic crops and garden plants, have invaded southern China and widely infected Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Whether an inter-species connection has facilitated the invasion process is unclear. In this study the interaction between P. solenopsis and H. rosa-sinensis infected with CLCuMV was investigated in the laboratory. We observed that 1st and 2nd instar nymphs of P. solenopsis preferred to feed on healthy H. rosa-sinensis leaves, whereas 3rd instar nymphs and female adults had no preference between healthy and virus-infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves. The developmental time of each P. solenopsis developmental stage increased significantly after feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves (p < 0.05). In particular, the development time for 2nd instar female and male nymphs and 3rd instar female nymphs increased by approximately twofold. The generation time of female mealybugs increased from 25.84 d on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 32.12 d when feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis, and the survival rate decreased from 71.04 % on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 5.80 % on infected plants. Nymph survival was most affected by feeding on infected plants. Additionally, the fecundity of female mealybugs feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis decreased by 47.8 %. Thus, feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis significantly decreased the biological fitness and invading and colonizing abilities of P. solenopsis.  相似文献

Interactions between ants and aphidophagous and coccidophagous ladybirds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aphidophagous and coccidophagous coccinellids come into conflict with homopteran-tending ants for access to food. Antagonistic interactions between coccinellids and ants may be competitive or non-competitive. Competitive interactions occur when coccinellids attack aphids or coccids that are being tended by ants for honeydew. Non-competitive interactions include all interactions away from ant-tended homopteran colonies. We here review observations and studies of such interactions. We note that most competitive interactions occur at times when untended aphids/coccids are scarce. We describe the chemical and physical defences that coccinellids use against ant aggression and consider whether these have evolved as general anti-predator deterrents or specifically in response to ants. Myrmecophilous coccinellids are then considered, with particular focus on the two most studied species, Coccinella magnifica and Platynaspis luteorubra. We note that the myrmecophily of the two species has the same adaptive rationale—to enable the ladybirds to prey on ant-tended aphids at times of aphid scarcity—but that it is based on different traits to facilitate life with ants. Finally, we consider the role of ants in the evolution of habitat specialisation in some coccinellids.  相似文献
