The aim of this study was to determine the diets of Portunus pelagicus in the large Peel-Harvey and Leschenault estuaries in south-western Australia in order to ascertain whether the dietary composition of this crab changes with body size during two different moult stages and differs between the two estuaries. Portunus pelagicus, ranging in age and carapace width from ca. 2 months and 12 mm to ca. 112 years and 159 mm, were collected from the shallow basins of the Peel-Harvey and Leschenault estuaries. Examination of the cardiac stomachs of these crabs showed that P. pelagicus does not feed just before or immediately after moulting and that the stomachs of recently-moulted crabs contained significantly more food than those of intermoult crabs. Although the volumetric contribution made by calcareous material to the stomach contents was similarly high in all size classes of recently-moulted crabs, i.e. 47 to 55%, the volumetric contributions made by small bivalves decreased with body size, whereas the reverse occurred with shell fragments of large decapods and, to a lesser extent, polychaetes. The dietary compositions of intermoult crabs were shown by classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination to differ markedly from those of recently-moulted crabs and to undergo similar progressive ontogenetic changes in both the Peel-Harvey and Leschenault estuaries. Thus, the contribution made by small benthic and epibenthic crustaceans, such as amphipods and tanaids, declined with increasing body size, whereas the reverse occurred with larger prey, such as nereid polychaetes, small decapods and teleosts. The dietary composition of P. pelagicus was influenced more by moult stage, i.e. recently moulted vs. intermoult, than by body size. Although the dietary compositions of P. pelagicus in the two estuaries were not significantly different, they did differ from those recorded from coastal marine waters in the same region, thereby reflecting differences in the potential prey in those two environments.  相似文献

Blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus (Rathbun), are an ecologically and commercially important species along the East coast of North America. Over the past century and a half, blue crabs have been exposed to an expanding set of exotic species, a few of which are potential competitors. To test for interactions with invasive crabs, juvenile C. sapidus males were placed in competition experiments for a food item with two common non-indigenous crabs, the green crab Carcinus maenas (L.) and the Japanese shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus (De Haan). Agonistic interactions were evaluated when they occurred. In addition, each species’ potential to resist predators was examined by testing carapace strength. Results showed that C. maenas was a superior competitor to both C. sapidus and H. sanguineus for obtaining food, while the latter two species were evenly matched against each other. Regarding agonism, C. sapidus, was the “loser” a disproportionate number of times. C. sapidus carapaces also had a significantly lower breaking strength. These experiments suggest that both as a competitor, and as potential prey, juvenile blue crabs have some disadvantages compared with these common sympatric exotic crab species, and in areas where these exotics are common, juvenile native blue crabs may be forced to expend more energy in conflict that could be spent foraging, and may be forced away from prime food items toward less optimum prey.  相似文献

Observations of the behavioural responses of near-shore marine scavengers to fish carrion were made at two depths (1–2 m, 16–18 m). Gobies and juvenile whelks were the most numerous scavengers, but appeared to consume little biomass. The first scavengers to appear at carrion (seconds/minutes) were swimming forms, later (minutes) joined by fast-moving, crawling portunid crabs. Large scavengers (crabs/starfish/catsharks) arrived after tens of minutes/hours. Scavengers were ‘direct feeders’ on the bait (crabs and some fish) or ‘indirect feeders’ (gobies and whelks) on scraps generated by direct feeders. Scavengers spent little time in aggression. While fish spent relatively low proportions of their time feeding (e.g. Lipophrys pholis: 2.2–15.8%), crabs fed almost continuously (e.g. Carcinus maenas: 97.8–99.3%) before leaving baits. Crab presence depressed fish feeding. Crabs were wasteful feeders that macerated the baits, generating scraps for indirect feeders and attracting more scavengers. The rock crab, Cancer irroratus Say, uses chemically mediated learning in the search for food. Rock crabs are opportunistic benthic predators and scavengers. Observations indicate that although they eat a variety of items, they are more sensitive to, and prefer, odors of food items that they have been eating. We found that C. irroratus is more responsive to a familiar food source than to an unfamiliar one and can distinguish between the odors of two different prey after being fed one species for an extended time. Initial preferences for two mytilid bivalves, Mytilus edulis and Geukensia demissa, were determined in a Y-maze. Crabs were then fed only one of the mussel species for 28 days and retested, using sequential and simultaneous presentations, for their responses to familiar and unfamiliar prey odors. Crabs increased their responses to familiar prey odors, but not to unfamiliar odors. In foraging tests, crabs ate M. edulis more often regardless of the species to which they had been familiarized.  相似文献

Numerous studies have demonstrated the existence of intra- and interspecific competition among ants, but few have investigated direct competitive interactions between ants and other taxa. In this paper, I present the first evidence of direct competitive interactions between ants and crabs. Evidence of competition for food between ants and the land hermit crab, Coenobita clypeatus (Herbst), was derived from observations and experiments in an archipelago of small islands in the central Exumas, Bahamas. Correlational evidence of competition for food based on occurrences at baits was found between ants and hermit crabs in multiple years. Observations at baits over time revealed species turnover occurred due to aggressive interactions. C. clypeatus discovered food items rapidly, but lost control of food over time, particularly to the ant Brachymyrmex obscurior Forel, which took longer to find food items but recruited large numbers of workers that drove off hermit crabs. A second ant species, Dorymyrmex pyramicus Roger, discovered baits quickly but did not recruit to baits in large numbers, and was not a superior competitor to either C. clypeatus or B. obscurior. Competition between ants and land hermit crabs was not intense enough to cause complementary distributions, and mechanisms of coexistence apparently include temporal variation in foraging activity and complementary foraging strategies when ants and crabs are active at the same time. Because of the widespread distributions and generalist scavenger diets of many ants and crabs, such competitive interactions are likely to be a common facet of many tropical and subtropical insular and coastal communities.  相似文献

Bopyrid isopods and rhizocephalan barnacles are obligate parasite crustaceans which harm their decapod hosts. However, to the best of our knowledge, studies have not compared which of these parasites has a greater parasitic effect on its hosts. Here, the parasitic effect of the bopyrid isopod, Allokepon hendersoni, and an unidentified sacculinid rhizocephalan species, infesting the same population of portunid crabs, Charybdis bimaculata, was investigated and compared for the first time. Samples were collected from the bycatch of a trawl fishery in Tosa Bay, Japan. A total of 2601 crabs were collected, of which 14 (0.55%) were parasitized by the bopyrid and 21 (0.82%) by the rhizocephalan. One of the two female crabs parasitized by the bopyrid was ovigerous (with much fewer eggs than unparasitized females). No ovigerous crab was found from the eight females parasitized by the rhizocephalan. Because only two female crabs were parasitized by the bopyrid, the following analyses were made using the male crabs. Both parasites reduced the wet weight (crab condition) and the cheliped size (secondary growth) of C. bimaculata, but the impact of the parasitism did not differ between the parasite species. The size of the abdominal flap of male hosts was reduced by the bopyrid infestation; however, rhizocephalan infestation caused enlargement of the abdominal flap, which is an indication of feminization. The present study provides information on how the effect of these two parasitic castrators on the same host crab varies. A moderate decrease in crab condition and cheliped development was common among the parasites, suggesting that the degree of impact might be favorable for the survival of the two parasites species.  相似文献

为探讨植酸酶对中华绒螯蟹(Eriocheir sinensis)幼蟹生长、消化性能及物质利用率的影响, 设计了6种配合饲料, 以不含植酸和植酸酶的组别为对照组(C), 在含有10 g/kg植酸的饲料中, 分别加入0、500、1000、1500 U/kg的植酸酶, 分别记为P0、P500、P1000、P1500和P2000。投喂初始体重为(4.34±0.05) g的幼蟹, 56d后称重并取样分析。结果发现: P0幼蟹增重率、特定生长率、蛋白质效率低于对照组, 饲料系数则高于对照组(P<0.05); 幼蟹增重率、特定生长率、蛋白质效率随着饲料中植酸酶含量的增加而升高, 在P2000达到最高, 且该组的饲料系数最低(P<0.05); P1500和P2000全蟹体磷含量显著高于P0 (P<0.05); 在P2000中, 幼蟹肝胰腺中胰蛋白酶、淀粉酶以及肠道胰蛋白酶活力达到最高(P<0.05); 中华绒螯蟹蛋白质消化率和磷透析率随着饲料中植酸酶含量的增加而逐渐升高, 其中P2000显著高于P0(P<0.05), 与对照组无显著差异(P>0.05); P2000幼蟹的氮、磷保留率最高(P<0.05)。以上结果表明, 在含有植酸的饲料中添加2000 U/kg的植酸酶, 能够显著提高幼蟹的生长和胰蛋白酶活力, 进而提高幼蟹对蛋白质的利用率, 降低饲料系数。此外, 植酸酶的添加也能有效提高幼蟹体磷含量和氮/磷保留率。  相似文献

Food consumption, gut transit times and assimilation efficiencies of the temperate fishes Lipophrys pholis and Parablennius sanguinolentus (Blenniidae) and Gobius cobitis (Gobiidae. when fed the green alga Ulva lactuca were determined at four temperatures in the laboratory. Food consumption increased and gut transit times decreased with increase in temperature in all three species. Assimilation efficiencies for algal carbon and nitrogen did not vary with temperature in G. cobitis . Carbon but not nitrogen assimilation efficiency varied with temperature in P. sanguinolentus , and both carbon and nitrogen assimilation efficiencies changed broadly with temperature in L. pholis , the most omnivorous of the three fishes. Assimilation efficiencies of all three species were generally within the previously reported ranges for herbivorous marine fishes. These species are thus clearly capable of extracting energy from algal food sources.  相似文献

Oyster reefs are among the most threatened coastal habitat types, but still provide critical habitat and food resources for many estuarine species. The structure of oyster reef food webs is an important framework from which to examine the role of these reefs in supporting high densities of associated fishes. We identified major trophic pathways to two abundant consumers, gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) and crested goby (Lophogobius cyprinoides), from a subtropical oyster reef using stomach content and stable isotope analysis. The diet of gray snapper was dominated by crabs, with shrimp and fishes also important. Juvenile gray snapper fed almost entirely on oyster reef-associated prey items, while subadults fed on both oyster reef- and mangrove-associated prey. Based on trophic guilds of the gray snapper prey, as well as relative δ13C values, microphytobenthos is the most likely basal resource pool supporting gray snapper production on oyster reefs. Crested goby had omnivorous diets dominated by bivalves, small crabs, detritus, and algae, and thus were able to take advantage of prey relying on production from sestonic, as well as microphytobenthos, source pools. In this way, crested goby represent a critical link of sestonic production to higher trophic levels. These results highlight major trophic pathways supporting secondary production in oyster reef habitat, thereby elucidating the feeding relationships that render oyster reef critical habitat for many ecologically and economically important fish species.  相似文献

The feeding activity along the day cycle and the time consumed for extracellular digestion were evaluated in the portunids C. ornatus and C. danae. Swimming crabs were obtained from trawling in Ubatuba bay, São Paulo, Brazil, during both the rainy and dry seasons. In each season, daily scheduled samples were taken at dawn (±6 h), noon (±12 h), dusk (±18 h) and midnight (±24 h). All individuals were dissected and the degree of stomach replenishment was recorded. In order to estimate the time elapsed for extracellular digestion, crabs were fed, and groups were dissected at 30 min intervals to check the conditions of their stomachs. In general, both species show a higher feeding activity during periods of lower light intensity, as evidenced by an increased percentage of full stomachs in dusk and midnight samples. The obtained results support higher feeding activity at night in these species and indicate short time for extracellular digestion, not exceeding 8 h. Nevertheless, full stomachs were recorded in all sampling schedules. In this case, it should be considered that elimination of certain food items such as fish bones, mollusk shells and carapace fragments of crustaceans could take more time than other items. Additionally, some crab species could require a cycle of cell replacement in the midgut gland epithelium until they can take their next meal.  相似文献

Cardiac activity, although discontinuous in buried crabs, formed a regular alternating time-series with a stable periodicity. Cross-correlation showed a close temporal linking between cardiac activity and oxygen consumption over 24 hours. Similar temporal patterns were observed in locomotor activity. 以40%棉粕为主的混合蛋白源制成基础饲料, 分别在其中添加0.00%、0.14%、0.28%、0.42%、0.56%蛋氨酸(分别记为0.00%Met、0.14%Met、0.28%Met、0.42%Met和0.56%Met), 配制了5种等氮等能的试验饲料, 以全鱼粉组(64.4%鱼粉)作为对照, 探讨了在高比例棉粕饲料中补充蛋氨酸对中华绒螯蟹幼蟹(0.390.02) g的摄食率、生长率和机体抗氧化酶活性的影响。结果表明: 与全鱼粉对照组相比, 0.42%Met组的增重率、特定生长率和饲料系数均无显著差异(P0.05), 但其显著高于0.00%Met、0.14%Met和0.28%Met组(P0.05); 增重率和特定生长率则显著高于0.56%Met组(P0.05); 从幼蟹的摄食量和蛋白质沉积率来看, 0.42%Met和0.28%Met组的摄食量与对照组相似, 当蛋氨酸的补充量低于0.28%或高于0.42%时, 幼蟹的摄食量均有所下降; 统计表明, 对照组的蛋白质沉积率最高(23.20%), 在各试验组中, 0.28%Met和0.42%Met组之间的蛋白质沉积率无显著差异(P0.05), 但显著高于0.00%Met、0.14%Met和0.56%Met组(P0.05); 分析幼蟹的肠道胰蛋白酶活性, 发现0.42%Met组与对照组之间无显著性差异(P0.05), 但均显著高于其他各试验组(P0.05); 0.28%Met、0.42%Met和0.56%Met处理组的血清丙二醛含量、超氧化物歧化酶活性和谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶活性与对照组无显著差异(P0.05)。结果提示, 在高比例植物蛋白(40%棉粕)的基础饲料中, 补充0.42%Met能够显著提高中华绒螯蟹幼蟹的生长率、消化率和抗氧化酶的活性。    相似文献

Herbivores often encounter nutritional deficiencies in their diets because of low nutrient content of plant biomass. Consumption of various diet items with different nutrient contents can potentially alleviate these nutritional deficiencies. However, most laboratory studies and modeling of herbivorous animals have been done with diets in which all food has uniform nutrient content. It is not clear whether heterogeneous versus uniform food of equal overall nutrient content is of equivalent nutritional value. We tested the effects of dietary mixing on performance of a model organism, Daphnia. We fed two species of Daphnia ( D. galeata, D. pulicaria) with diets of equivalent bulk stoichiometric food quality (C:P) and studied whether they would produce equivalent performance when C:P was uniform among cells or when the diet involved a mixture of high C:P and low C:P cells. Daphnia were fed saturating and limiting concentrations of a uniform food of moderate C:P (UNI) or mixtures (MIX) of high C:P (LOP) and low C:P (HIP) algae prepared to match C:P in UNI. Daphnia were also fed HIP and LOP algae separately. Juvenile growth rate and adult fecundity were measured. D. galeata performance in UNI and MIX treatments did not differ, indicating that partitioning of C and P among particles did not affect dietary quality. Similarly, D. pulicarias performance was similar in the MIX and UNI treatments but only at low food abundance. In the high food treatment, both growth and reproduction were higher in the MIX treatment, indicating some benefit of a more heterogeneous diet. The mechanisms for this improvement are unclear. Also, food quality affected growth and reproduction even at low food levels for both D. pulicaria and D. galeata. Our results indicate that some species of zooplankton can benefit from stoichiometric heterogeneity on diet.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates were assessed for Terebratulina retusa (L.) held under 3 different regimes of temperature and food availability. These were: 5.6?C, no food (cold, starved); 5.8?C, food present (cold, fed) and 10.7?C food present (warm, fed), which simulated winter conditions, summer conditions and an intermediate treatment. Regressions of oxygen consumption on ash‐free dry weight (AFDW) had slopes which were not significantly different from each other and ranged from 0.953 to 0.999. A common slope of 0.976 was calculated and intercepts based on the common slope used to compare oxygen consumption in each treatment. The rise from cold, starved conditions to warm, fed was 24.5 per cent and this was significant (P < 0.05). Other differences were not significant (P > 0.05) but the cold, fed result was 12.6 per cent higher than cold, starved. Therefore feeding and temperature probably account for equivalent proportions of the rise in metabolism from winter to summer. Ammonia production data were much more variable. Excretion rates of a 50 mg AFDW individual (in ng‐at NH3‐N.h‐1) were as follows: cold, starved: 30.2 cold, fed: 7.1; and warm, fed: 22.9. Oxygen to nitrogen (O:N) ratios reflected these results. Mean O:N ratios were: cold, starved: 8.0; cold, fed: 42.4; warm, fed: 16.3. This shows that the simulated winter group relied heavily on protein to fuel their metabolism, the simulated summer group were less dependent on protein and the intermediate group probably used lipids and carbohydrates to fuel metabolic demands. This possibly reflected a trade off between food supply and increased metabolism from treatment to treatment, demonstrating a flexibility which could have been a contributing factor in the ecological tolerance and geological longevity of some brachiopods.  相似文献

The feeding-associated morphological structures of the two Galeichthys species were found to be similar in all respects. Interspecific competition for food was avoided through habitat separation. Habitat preference, as established by dietary analysis and fishing trials, was based on substratum type. Galeichthys feliceps fed over sandy and muddy substrata in marine and estuarine environments, while G. ater fed exclusively over marine reefs. The two species have different caudal fin structures which are probably evolutionary responses to habitat-associated behavioural requirements in the two different environments.
The diets of the two species were investigated and compared using calorific values of prey items. While both species fed predominantly on benthic crustaceans, polychaetes and molluscs, little dietary overlap occurred at the species level. In the estuarine environment, G. feliceps fed mainly on the anomurans Upogebia africana and Calianassa kraussi , crabs Hymenosoma orbiculare and Cleislosoma edwardsii , and several isopod species. In the marine environment G. feliceps fed mainly on two species of crabs, Thaumastoplax spiralis and Goneplax angulata , the echiurid Ochaetostoma capense and the sedentary polychaete Sternaspsis scutata. A high incidence of teleost scales in the diet of G. feliceps juveniles was found to be a consequence of scavenging rather than a lepidophagous habit. Galeichthys ater fed widely on several reef-associated crabs, isopods, polychaetes and cephalopods.  相似文献

Summary

Freshwater crabs (Potamonautes perlatus) are the largest naturally occurring invertebrates in southern African rivers. The ecology of these animals in South African riverine ecosystems is little understood. This study investigates some aspects of the population and feeding ecology of P. perlatus in the upper reaches of the Buffalo River. The densities of crabs (carapace width larger than 25 mm) at two sites in the river ranged between 1.72 and 5.25 crabs m2, higher than previously recorded for freshwater crabs in rivers in southern Africa and southern Italy. Twenty-four hour observations revealed that P. perlatus has a nocturnal habit. The diet of P. perlatus was established by examination of the contents of the fore-gut. Crabs with a carapace width smaller than 40 mm fed predominantly on aquatic invertebrates while larger crabs fed on allochthanous material (leaf litter), detritus and algae. Through feeding, crabs reduced the surface area of leaves in the stream by 99.95%.  相似文献

In aquatic food webs consumers can affect other members of the web by releasing nutrients as a result of their feeding activity. There is increasing evidence of these positive effects on primary producers, but such nutrient regeneration can also affect detritivores, by favoring the activities of detritus-associated microbes. We examined the effects of nutrient regeneration by tadpoles on leaf-eating detritivores under laboratory conditions. We fed four species of tadpoles three different food items (leaf litter, algae, and sludgeworms). We then conditioned terrestrial dead leaves with water from reared tadpoles (treatments) or food items alone (controls), and compared the C:N ratios of the conditioned leaves and the growth of the isopod Asellus hilgendorfii fed on the conditioned leaves. Tadpole feeding activity reduced the C:N ratio of conditioned leaves, and the effect was greatest when tadpoles were fed algae. Isopod growth rates were often higher when they were fed the litter conditioned with water from reared tadpoles. Thus, nutrient regeneration by tadpoles had a positive indirect effect on detritivores by enhancing leaf quality. Tadpoles often occur in nutrient-limited habitats where leaf litter is the major energy source, and their facilitative effects on leaf-eating detritivores may be of great significance in food webs by enhancing litter decomposition.  相似文献

Ingestion rates, faecal pellet and egg production were obtained in laboratory experiments with females of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus collected from the English Channel in November 1994. Five different algal monocultures were used as food: Prorocentrum micans (30 μm ESD), Thalassiosira weissflogii (13 μm ESD), Dunaliella tertiolecta (7 μm ESD), Emiliania huxleyi (5 μm ESD) and Coccolithus pelagicus (14 μm ESD). Results obtained suggest the low ingestion efficiency of the copepod when feeding on coccolithophorids during late autumn-early winter. From the five species offered, only the largest non coccolithophorid Prorocentrum micans and Thalassiosira weissflogii supported efficient feeding and calculated respiratory demand for C. helgolandicus. Both coccolithophorids, irrespective of cell size, were ingested at very low rates even when offered at high concentrations (233-468 μg C l(-1)). Besides low ingestion, no egg production was found in the copepods fed with Emiliania huxleyi, although unusual high gross efficiency (reaching 72%) was obtained in experiments performed with Coccolithus pelagicus. The late seasonal timing of the experiments (November) could explain the low ingestion and egg production rates.  相似文献

The effect of meal type on specific dynamic action was investigated in the green shore crab, Carcinus maenas. When the crabs were offered a meal of fish, shrimp, or mussel of 3 % of their body mass the duration of the SDA response and thus the resultant SDA was lower for the mussel, compared with the shrimp or fish meals. In feeding behaviour experiments the crabs consumed almost twice as much mussel compared with fish or shrimp. When the animals were allowed to feed on each meal until satiated, the differences in the SDA response were abolished. The mussel was much softer (compression test) than the fish or shrimp meal, and meal texture is known to affect the SDA response in amphibians and reptiles. When the crabs were offered a meal of homogenized fish muscle or whole fish muscle, the SDA for the homogenized meal was approximately 35 % lower. This suggested that a significant portion of the SDA budget in decapod crustaceans may be related to mechanical digestion. This is not unexpected since the foregut is supplied by over forty muscles which control the cutting and grinding movements of the gastric mill apparatus. There were slight, but significant differences in protein, lipid, moisture and total energy content of each meal type. Three prepared meals that were high in either protein, lipid or carbohydrate were offered to the crabs to determine if the nutrient content was also a contributing factor to the observed differences in the SDA. The crabs did not eat the prepared meals as readily as the natural food items and as they are messy feeders there was a large variation in the amount of food eaten. The lack of significant differences in the SDA response as a function of nutrient content was likely due to differences in amount of food eaten, which is a major factor determining the SDA response. The differences in SDA when consuming natural food items were likely due to a combination of the costs of mechanical digestion, variation in nutrient content and food preference: determining how each of these factors contributes to the overall SDA budget remains a pressing question for comparative physiologists.  相似文献
