Bilateral electrolytic lesions of the dorsal hippocamp and basolateral amygdalar complex impede the differential and extinctive inhibition. The damage of the corticomedial amygdala against a background of the dorsal hippocamp deficiency facilitates differentiation and extinction of alimentary reflexes induced by a decrease of the alimentary motivation and by weakening of alimentary conditioned reflexes. Lesions of the dorsal hippocamp after the corticomedial amygdala damage facilitates the training of positive alimentary reflexes, but weakens inhibitory conditioned reflexes.  相似文献

In microelectrophysiological investigations influences of different nuclear regions of the amygdaloid complex on the spike activity of the functionally identified single respiratory neurons of the medulla oblongata were studied in anesthetized cats. It was established a qualitative different character of the changes of unit activity of the medullary respiratory neurons in case of stimulation of phylogenetically old corticomedial or new basolateral nuclear groups of the amygdala. It was shown higher reactivity of the investigated neurons to stimulation of the corticomedial nuclei than basolateral. The influences of the corticomedial nuclear groups on the bulbar inspiratory and expiratory neurons were facilitatory as well as inhibitory with prevailing excitatory effects. It was found that influences of the phylogenetically new neoamygdaloid structures of basolateral region on spike activity of the bulbar respiratory neurons differ accordingly to their topographical differentiation. Mechanisms of amygdaloid control of activity of the medullary respiratory neurons are discussed.  相似文献

Grooming behaviour is the most common innate behaviour in animals. In rodents, it consists of sequences of movements organized in four phases, executed symmetrically on both sides of the animal and creating a syntactic chain of behavioural events. The grooming syntax can be altered by stress and novelty, as well as by several mutations and brain lesions. Grooming behaviour is known to be affected by alterations of the dopamine system, including dopamine receptor modulation, dopamine alteration in genetically modified animals, and after brain lesion. While a lot is known about the initiation and syntactic modifications of this refined sequence of movements, effects of unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons are unclear particularly regarding the symmetry of syntactic chains. In the present work we studied grooming in mice unilaterally lesioned in the medial forebrain bundle by 6-hydroxydopamine. We found a reduction in completion of grooming bouts, associated with reduction in number of transitions between grooming phases. The data also revealed the development of asymmetry in grooming behaviour, with reduced tendency to groom the contralateral side to the lesion. Symmetry was recovered following treatment with L-DOPA. Thus, the present work shows that unilateral lesion of dopamine neurons reduces self-grooming behaviour by affecting duration and numbers of events. It produces premature discontinuation of grooming chains but the sequence syntax remains correct. This deficient grooming could be considered as an intrinsic symptom of Parkinson’s disease in animal models and could present some similarities with abnormalities of motor movement sequencing seen in patients. Our study also suggests grooming analysis as an additional method to screen parkinsonism in animal models.  相似文献

Social primates spend a significant proportion of their time exchanging grooming with their group companions. Although grooming is mainly exchanged in kind, given its hygienic and tension-reducing functions, it is still debated whether grooming also provides some social benefits, such as preferential access to resources (e.g., food or mating partners). In this study we analyzed grooming distribution among wild female Japanese macaques living in two groups on Yakushima. We tested the tendency of monkeys to reciprocate the amount of grooming received, and to direct their grooming up the hierarchy. Then we analyzed the relation of grooming to three of its possible benefits: reduced aggression, increased tolerance over food, and agonistic support against a male aggressor. The data were analyzed by means of row-wise matrix correlations. Grooming was highly reciprocated (i.e., exchanged in kind) and directed up the hierarchy in both the study groups. No significant relationship was found between grooming and aggression. Conversely, grooming favored tolerance over food, since it was positively correlated with presence on the same food patch, close proximity, and close approaches (both within 1 m) during feeding. Grooming was also positively related to agonistic support against adult males, although this relationship became nonsignificant when we controlled for kinship. Although these results are not definitive, they suggest that monkeys may derive various social benefits from grooming. This conclusion is supported by the fact that in various primate species animals tend to prefer high-ranking individuals as grooming partners.  相似文献

Intracerebroventricular administration of TRH induces excessive grooming behavior that is characterized by an important contribution of the elements scratching and paw licking. As compared with other grooming inducing peptides, the pattern of TRH-induced grooming resembles that induced by beta-endorphin rather than those elicited by ACTH or bombesin. TRH-induced excessive grooming is suppressed by pretreatment with haloperidol, naloxone or neurotensin. Haloperidol suppresses TRH-induced grooming in a general way, whereas the suppressive effect of the other drugs is mainly due to a selective reduction of TRH-induced excessive scratching. Combined treatments of rats with TRH and a submaximal dose of ACTH, bombesin or beta-endorphin do not result in higher grooming scores than with single peptide treatment. Excessive grooming elicited by water immersion is not affected by TRH. It is concluded that TRH is undoubtedly an excessive grooming inducing peptide. In situations where excessive grooming is elicited by other peptides or by water immersion, TRH does not further activate the operating systems involved in the existing excessive grooming.  相似文献

Otters Lutra lutra L. which feed in the sea in Scotland frequently wash in fresh water. Experiments were carried out with otter pelts and with captive otters, to study the biological function of this behaviour. In vitro , the fur of otters lost much of its thermal insulation after five soakings in sea water and subsequent drying. Otters were fed in sea water or fresh water, with or without simultaneous access to alternative fresh water. When fed in sea water, otters used the alternative fresh water much more than when fed in fresh water, they were more reluctant to enter sea water if no alternative fresh water was present, and without this alternative fresh water they showed signs of hypothermia. After swimming in sea water the animals spent more time grooming and rolling. Without fresh water present the otters' fur lost its capacity for retaining air under water. These observations suggest an explanation for the restricted distribution of otters living along the coast, and for the lack of use of marine habitats by small mammals in general.  相似文献

Allo‐grooming is perhaps the most powerful affiliative behavior observed in non‐human primates. However, the functional significance of grooming in New World monkeys has not yet been fully understood, perhaps because grooming is less frequently observed in platyrrhines. To differentiate the potential role of affiliative investment and/or kinship on sharing access to food (co‐feeding) in spider monkeys, behavioral data on grooming, embracing, and feeding were collected from two different groups of captive study subjects: a familiar/kin group and a non‐familiar/non‐kin group. The results of this study suggest that family‐related spider monkeys that engage in grooming tend to share access to food resources more than unfamiliar conspecifics that do not groom. One explanation for this difference is that the unfamiliar study subjects had not yet invested in the affiliative social network, were not reciprocating their affiliative investments and hence, had a higher tendency toward single animal monopolizing resources. Degree of relatedness alone was not found to be a determinant for sharing the access to food, suggesting that familiarity in spider monkeys is based on the extent to which animals invest in affiliative relationships. In this study, only animals that had engaged in long‐term grooming and recognized each other as familiar shared the access to food. Therefore, it might be likely that in spider monkeys, long‐term grooming of high intensity has to be developed for co‐feeding to occur. Zoo Biol 20:293–303, 2001. © 2001 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In social animals, fission is a common mode of group proliferation and dispersion and may be affected by genetic or other social factors. Sociality implies preserving relationships between group members. An increase in group size and/or in competition for food within the group can result in decrease certain social interactions between members, and the group may split irreversibly as a consequence. One individual may try to maintain bonds with a maximum of group members in order to keep group cohesion, i.e. proximity and stable relationships. However, this strategy needs time and time is often limited. In addition, previous studies have shown that whatever the group size, an individual interacts only with certain grooming partners. There, we develop a computational model to assess how dynamics of group cohesion are related to group size and to the structure of grooming relationships. Groups’ sizes after simulated fission are compared to observed sizes of 40 groups of primates. Results showed that the relationship between grooming time and group size is dependent on how each individual attributes grooming time to its social partners, i.e. grooming a few number of preferred partners or grooming equally or not all partners. The number of partners seemed to be more important for the group cohesion than the grooming time itself. This structural constraint has important consequences on group sociality, as it gives the possibility of competition for grooming partners, attraction for high-ranking individuals as found in primates’ groups. It could, however, also have implications when considering the cognitive capacities of primates.  相似文献

We observed the grooming interactions of 13 female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)before and for 12 weeks after the births of their infants. Mothers groomed for similar amounts of time before and after the birth of their infants, but after the birth, the grooming they directed to their infants may have been at the expense of that directed to other partners. Lactating females did not receive more grooming from other females but were approached more often, suggesting that they were more attractive. Mothers that groomed their infants most groomed others least, as if grooming time was limited for each mother or as if she was trying to compensate for avoiding interactions with other partners. Mothers of male infants groomed others more than mothers with female infants did, which might be due to mothers with daughters receiving more aggression and therefore avoiding interaction. Experienced and high-ranking mothers groomed their newborn infants considerably more than primiparous mothers did in the 24 hr following birth. Grooming was preferentially directed at close kin before the births of the infants. Mothers tended to groom higher-ranked partners more than they were groomed by them, and they tended to receive more grooming from lower-ranked partners than they gave, as suggested in models of rank attractiveness.  相似文献

Grooming is a common animal behavior that aids in ectoparasite defense. Ectoparasites can stimulate grooming, and natural selection can also favor endogenous mechanisms that evoke periodic bouts of “programmed” grooming to dislodge or kill ectoparasites before they bite or feed. Moreover, grooming can function as a displacement or communication behavior. We compared the grooming behaviors of adult female black‐tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) on colonies with or without flea control via pulicide dust. Roughly 91% of the prairie dogs sampled on the non‐dusted colony carried at least one flea, whereas we did not find fleas on two dusted colonies. During focal observations, prairie dogs on the non‐dusted colony groomed at higher frequencies and for longer durations than prairie dogs on the dusted colonies, lending support to the hypothesis that fleas stimulated grooming. However, the reduced amount of time spent grooming on the dusted colonies suggested that approximately 25% of grooming might be attributed to factors other than direct stimulation from ectoparasites. Non‐dusted colony prairie dogs rarely autogroomed when near each other. Dusted colony prairie dogs autogroomed for shorter durations when far from a burrow opening (refuge), suggesting a trade‐off between self‐grooming and antipredator defense. Allogrooming was detected only on the non‐dusted colony and was limited to adult females grooming young pups. Grooming appears to serve an antiparasitic function in C. ludovicianus. Antiparasitic grooming might aid in defense against fleas that transmit the plague bacterium Yersinia pestis. Plague was introduced to North America ca. 1900 and now has a strong influence on most prairie dog populations, suggesting a magnified effect of grooming on prairie dog fitness.  相似文献

Injections of bombesin (BN) into the vicinity of the caudal brainstem suppress food intake in rats. In the present study, the food intake parameters [meal size (MS), intermeal interval (IMI), satiety ratio (SR)] affected by 4th ventricle BN injections were determined. Following a 15-h food deprivation, rats were administered 4th ventricle injections of saline (0.15 M) and BN in doses of 1, 5, 10, and 20 ng BN, and were then given access to sweetened milk. The animals' behaviors (feeding, resting, grooming, exploring) were scored every one min and milk intake every five min for 60 min following the injections. Fourth ventricle injections of 5 ng BN and greater reliably suppressed milk. intake. This reduction was reflected in a significant reduction in the MS. The IMI was not affected. As a result, the SR (IMI2/MS1), which is thought to represent the satiating property of food, was reliably greater following BN than following saline administration. The reduced food intake was accompanied by a significant increase in grooming behavior and a corresponding decrease in exploring. The amount of time spent resting (inactive) was similar following saline and all but the highest dose of BN. To demonstrate that the behavioral effects of BN were mediated by specific caudal brainstem BN receptors, 4th ventricle injections of [D-Phe12,Leu14]BN, a BN receptor antagonist, or saline preceded the 4th ventricle injection of 5 ng BN. Pretreatment with [D-Phe12,Leu14]BN reliably blocked the effects of BN on food intake and grooming.  相似文献

Male mating success in a multimale–multifemale group can depend on several variables: body condition, dominance, coalitions, “friendship,” or an exchange of services for mating access. Exchange patterns may also be determined by market effects or social relationships. We studied the mating tactics of males in a captive, multimale–multifemale group of rhesus macaques and the resulting patterns of mating and paternity to determine the influence of dominance rank, mating markets, and relationship quality on their mating tactics. Male rank was positively related to the total number of copulations and the number of mating partners, but did not explain male mating distribution completely. Moreover, male fertilization success was not related to male rank. Males did not exchange grooming for mating access on the same day and neither the supply nor the rank (as a proxy for quality) of receptive females affected the amount of male grooming, suggesting that market effects did not explain male mating access. However, there was a positive correlation between long-term grooming patterns of both males and females and mating access, indicating that social relationships were important for male mating access. Paternity data revealed that these social relationships were also important for male reproductive success. We conclude that both male rank and male–female “friendship” determined male mating access in these rhesus macaques, but that “friendship” was more important in determining paternity, emphasizing the importance of intersex social bonds in male mating success in multimale primate societies.  相似文献

Allogrooming contributes to the development and maintenance of social relationships, including those that involve alliances, in many primate species. Variation in relatedness, dominance rank, and other factors can produce variation in the value of others as grooming partners. Several models have been developed to account for variation in the distribution of grooming in relation to dominance ranks. These start from the premise that individuals are attracted to high-ranking partners, but time limits, direct competition, and prior grooming engagement between high-ranking individuals can constrain access to them. Sambrook et al. (1995) formalized some of these models and showed the importance of taking group size variation into account when assessing them. Chimpanzees form multimale communities in which males are the philopatric sex. Males commonly associate and groom with each other; they also form dominance hierarchies and form alliances that influence dominance ranks and mating success. Both male rank and the rank distance between partners are significantly correlated with the distribution of grooming between males in an extremely large chimpanzee community at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, that has more males than any other known community. High-ranking males had more grooming partners than mid- or low-ranking males. Grooming predominantly went up the dominance hierarchy, but was also concentrated among males that were close in rank. Rank and rank distance apparently both affected grooming independently of reciprocity in grooming and independently of the frequency with which males associated in temporary parties. However, the data do not clearly indicate how constraints on access to partners might have operated. Published data from a smaller chimpanzee community at Mahale show no rank or rank distance effect on male grooming. These results and earlier, conflicting findings on the association between dominance rank and grooming in male chimpanzees indicate that variation in group size, i.e., the number of males per community, probably influences the strength of any such effects, as happens for grooming between females in several cercopithecine species. Data on coalitions at Ngogo support the argument that high-ranking males are valuable social partners, and similarity in strategies of alliance formation may influence the distribution of grooming.  相似文献

The pituitary growth hormone (GH) response to the growth hormone-releasing factor, hpGRF-44, was evaluated in male rats with various lesions of the central nervous system. These included an electrical lesion of the ventromedial hypothalamus, a chemical lesion of the arcuate nucleus induced by neonatal treatment with monosodium glutamate, a functional lesion of catecholamine synthesis with alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine or a functional lesion of catecholamine storage with reserpine. The first three lesions appear to partially inhibit normal somatostatin secretion since in every instance hpGRF-44 administration induced a significant increase in plasma GH concentrations. In contrast, reserpine blocked the GH response to hpGRF-44, presumably by stimulating somatostatin secretion. The pituitary GH response to hpGRF-44 in the above described models was enhanced by pretreatment of the rats with antibodies against somatostatin. The pituitary GH response to repeated injections of hpGRF-44 was also evaluated in rats with an anatomical lesion of the arcuate nucleus or a functional lesion of catecholamine synthesis. The maximum GH response did not vary over time to the repeated injections of hpGRF-44 in rats with lesions of the arcuate nucleus; however, interruption of catecholamine synthesis resulted in a significant decrease in the GH response to hpGRF-44 over time.  相似文献

Relatively little information is available regarding the role of social grooming and embraces in spider monkeys that live in fission-fusion societies in which individuals are usually split into subgroups. We investigated whether embraces and grooming have similar roles in captive spider monkeys by examining their occurrence in two contexts. One context was fusion, i.e. when the monkeys moved into an area of the enclosure where other monkeys were present, in which individuals from different subgroups were expected to exchange greeting behavior. The other context was the access to young infants, in which females were expected increase their friendly behavior toward mothers. We collected data by observing all individuals within a subgroup and via focal animal sampling. We found that overall embraces occurred more frequently than grooming and that their distributions were not correlated. The frequency of embraces was positively associated with the number of fusion events per observation, whereas the frequency of grooming bouts was not. Furthermore, embraces were more frequent following initial approaches after fusion versus subsequent approaches, and the figure was higher than the corresponding one for grooming. Mothers received more embraces after than before the birth of their infants, whereas there was no such effect for grooming. Embraces, but not grooming, play a role in the regulation of social relationships in spider monkeys. Embraces may serve as signals of benign disposition in contexts that are likely to be associated with tension, such as fusion and access to infants.  相似文献

The influence of naloxone, haloperidol and neurotensin was investigated on bombesin-induced excessive grooming in rats. All three drugs reduced the amount of bombesin-induced grooming. Haloperidol induced a general reduction in excessive grooming as induced by bombesin, without changing the composition of grooming behavior, whereas naloxone and neurotensin suppressed bombesin-induced grooming and caused a shift in the distribution of grooming elements. The main suppressive effect of these latter drugs appeared to be on the element scratching. From these data it is suggested that bombesin-induced scratching is mainly displayed by activation of opiate receptor systems, whereas the other elements of bombesin-induced excessive grooming are mainly regulated by dopaminergic systems.  相似文献

Grooming is a common behavior of some mammals. Previous studies have shown that grooming is a means by which animals clean themselves, remove ectoparasites, and lower their body temperature. It is also involved in olfactory communication. Bats belong to the order Chiroptera and, like most mammals, are the natural host of many ectoparasites. Bat grooming, including licking and scratching, is one of the ways to reduce the adverse effects caused by ectoparasites. Bat grooming may also be induced by exogenous odor. In this study, we used lesser flat‐headed bats (Tylonycteris pachypus) to test the hypothesis that exogenous odor affects the self‐grooming behavior of bats. Results showed that external odor from distantly related species caused lesser flat‐headed bats to spend more time in self‐grooming. Lesser flat‐headed bats that received odor from humans spent the longest time in self‐grooming, followed by those that received odor from a different species of bats (T. robustula). Lesser flat‐headed bats that received odor form the same species of bats, either from the same or a different colony, spent the least amount of time in self‐grooming. These results suggest that bats can recognize conspecific and heterospecific through body scent.  相似文献

Bombesin, substance P and several structurally related peptides cause excessive grooming behavior after intracerebroventricular injection in mice. The present study describes the behavioral characteristics of these effects after acute administration. Substance P caused an elevation of grooming behavior which was short-lasting (less than 15 minutes), while bombesin induced both grooming and scratching behavior with a duration of action of about 2.5 hours. After repeated injections of high doses of either bombesin or a metabolically stable substance P analog, no tolerance-formation to these peptide-induced effects could be observed. Morphine partially antagonized bombesin-induced behaviors at a dose of 7.5 mg/kg subcutaneously while the same dose did not attentuate substance P-induced grooming. These results suggest that the behavioral changes induced by substance P and bombesin are mediated by distinct mechanisms. The lack of tolerance formation, together with the partial antagonism by morphine, suggests that the bombesin-induced behaviors may be related to a stimulation of nociceptive mechanisms.  相似文献

Water permeability of the outer medullary collecting duct's (OMCD) basolateral membrane was determined in vitro in the tubules isolated from hyperhydrated or dehydrated Wistar rats. Oil was injected into the lumen to block apical membrane water permeability. OMCD fragments underwent a hypoosmic shock (600/300 mOsm) and epithelial cells volume increased ad recorded with a digital camera. The latter's rate was used to calculate apparent water permeability of the membrane (Pf). Treatment of the tubules with Hg2Cl2 suppressed the water permeability. Water deprivation and dDAVP induced an increase in the basolateral water permeability. The data obtained suggest that the water permeability of the OMCD basolateral membrane may be stimulated by vasopressin and water deprivation.  相似文献

Les1, a dominant gene of maize (Zea mays L.), results in the production of necrotic leaf spots. Expression of this trait is temperature sensitive, and the nonpermissive temperature for expression is determined by the genetic background in which the gene is placed. Exposure to nonpermissive conditions for 24–48 hr will induce lesion production in the most sensitive genotype. Lesions form first at the leaf tip, the oldest part of the leaf, and progress basipetally through fully expanded tissue. Leaves excised from plants grown at either permissive or nonpermissive temperatures and placed in water, gibberellic acid, or abscisic acid solutions form no new lesions at either 20 or 30°C, and the leaves senesce rapidly. However, when leaves excised from normal and Les1 plants are placed in kinetin, senescence is delayed and numerous lesions develop at 20°C on Les1 plants. Our results suggest that there is a developmental time window during which maize leaf cells can be induced to form lesions: cells must be fully elongated but not yet senescent. This hypothesis is strengthened by the observation that pinprick wounding of leaves induces lesions only in a band of tissue approximately 2 days younger than the area of the leaf currently producing lesions. Various models for the action of Les1 in causing discrete lesion formation are discussed.  相似文献
