Parallel effects of temporal variables on autoshaping and on delayed matching to sample performance suggest that delayed matching, like autoshaping, might depend upon the within-trial expectancy of reinforcement relative to the overall expectancy of reinforcement in the session. This possibility was assessed by presenting free food at different times during a 30-sec intertrial interval (ITI) in a delayed matching to sample procedure with pigeons. In three conditions a single free food presentation occurred, either early, mid-way, or late in each ITI; in another condition, three food presentations occurred during each ITI, one at each time location. Relative to a baseline condition, in which free food never occurred during the ITI, only food presentations late in the ITI produced a significant disruption in accuracy, and this effect occurred only at the longest of three delays tested. Three free food presentations in each ITI disrupted accuracy only to the same degree as a single, late, ITI food presentation. Thus, accuracy was affected by the temporal location rather than the frequency of ITI food presentations. These effects appear to differ from those of ITI food presentations on autoshaping and do not seem to be understandable in terms of changes in the background expectancy of reinforcement. It was suggested instead that food presented late in the ITI might disrupt subsequent memory processes.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of non-contingent intertrial interval (ITI) reinforcers on rats' discrimination of duration. In the first experiment, rats' discrimination of a 2 vs. 8 s of light was significantly disrupted when reinforcers were presented in the ITI. Disruption was not different on short (2 s) and long (8 s) trials. The second experiment showed that this disruptive effect was not specific to trials preceded by ITI reinforcers; responding on empty ITI trials run in the same session as ITI-reinforcer trials was also disrupted. This disruption however was not as great as on the ITI-reinforcer trials. The results of these experiments show that ITI reinforcers affect timing discriminations in much the same way they affect classical conditioning and delayed matching to sample. However, detailed examination of the results suggests that the deleterious effects of ITI reinforcers in these different paradigms might be produced by different rather than the same mechanism. The results also support the conclusion that pre-trial reinforcement “priming” produces disruption rather than facilitation in complex tasks.  相似文献

Although diel food habit studies have been undertaken on a number of individual species, few studies have examined diel variation in the diets of fish communities. We examined the diel diet variation and feeding periodicity of a fish community in the Juniata River, Pennsylvania. Nine species, totalling 1,098 fish, were collected at 4-h intervals over a 24-h period in October 1989, in numbers sufficient to describe their diel variation in diet composition. Diel variation in diet composition was evident in all species, as no single prey taxon was dominant in the diet of any species during any 4-h interval. Ephemeropterans were the most important prey taxa for four species of centrarchids, whereas chironomids were the main prey of banded killifish, mimic shiners, and spotfin shiners. Algae was the major component in the diet of spottail shiners, whereas bluntnose minnows contained mostly detritus. Feeding activities of rock bass, redbreast sunfish, and pumpkinseed occurred at low levels throughout the day; peak feeding occurred from 2000 to 0400 hours. Food consumption of smallmouth bass increased throughout the day with peak consumption occurring at 2000 hours. Non-centrarchids fed little during daylight hours and showed peak activity at 2000–2400 h. Construction of a 24-hour diet from six 4-h interval estimates and feeding periodicity data provided a comprehensive representation of the diel feeding ecology of all species collected.  相似文献

This protocol details a method for using a T-maze to assess the cognitive ability of rodents. The T-maze is an elevated or enclosed apparatus in the form of a T placed horizontally. Animals are started from the base of the T and allowed to choose one of the goal arms abutting the other end of the stem. If two trials are given in quick succession, on the second trial the rodent tends to choose the arm not visited before, reflecting memory of the first choice. This is called 'spontaneous alternation'. This tendency can be reinforced by making the animal hungry and rewarding it with a preferred food if it alternates. Both spontaneous and rewarded alternation are very sensitive to dysfunction of the hippocampus, but other brain structures are also involved. Each trial should be completed in under 2 min, but the total number of trials required will vary according to statistical and scientific requirements.  相似文献

Continuous melatonin administration via silastic implants accelerates the resynchronization of the circadian locomotor activity rhythm in house sparrows (Passer domesticus) after exposure to phase shifts of a weak light-dark cycle. Constant melatonin might induce this effect either by increasing the sensitivity of the visual system to a light zeitgeber or by reducing the degree of self-sustainment of the circadian pacemaker. To distinguish between these two possible mechanisms, two groups of house sparrows, one carrying melatonin implants and the other empty implants, were kept in constant dim light and subjected to advance and delay shifts of a 12-h feeding phase. The resynchronization times of their circadian feeding rhythm following the phase shifts were significantly shorter when the birds carried melatonin implants than when they carried empty implants. In a second experiment, melatonin-implanted and control birds were released into food ad libitum conditions 2 days after either a delay or an advance phase shift. The number of hours by which the activity rhythms had been shifted on the second day in food ad libitum conditions was assessed. Melatonin-implanted house sparrows had significantly larger phase shifts in their circadian feeding rhythm than control birds. This is in accordance with the first experiment since a larger phase shift at a given time reflects accelerated resynchronization. Additionally, the second experiment also excludes any possible masking effects of the nonphotic zeitgeber. In conclusion, constant melatonin accelerates resynchronization even after phase shifts of a nonphotic zeitgeber, indicating that constant high levels of melatonin can reduce the degree of self-sustainment of the circadian pacemaker independent of any effects on the photoreceptive system.  相似文献

Four experiments with rats investigated whether the time between appetitive conditioning trials can serve as a discriminative cue for responding during the next conditional stimulus (CS). In Experiment 1, rats that received extinction trials with a 4-min intertrial interval (ITI) showed spontaneous recovery after a retention interval of 16 min, whereas rats that received extinction with a 16-min ITI did not. Experiments 2 and 3 investigated more explicit discriminations between the 4- and 16-min ITIs. When a 16-min ITI signaled that the CS would be reinforced and a 4-min ITI signaled that it would not, the ITIs modulated responding to the CS. But when the 4-min ITI signaled reinforcement and the 16-min ITI did not, there was less evidence of modulation by the ITIs. This asymmetry was due at least partly to a difficulty in performance rather than learning. Experiment 4 investigated similar discriminations with 1- and 4-min ITIs. Here the results took a different form: time in the reinforced ITI elicited responding directly, but did not modulate responding to the CS. ITI can function as a contextual cue, and the results suggest new similarities between the processes behind interval timing and associative learning.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Eating behavior is controlled by the energy needs of the organism. The need to provide a constant supply of energy to tissues is a homeostatic drive that adjusts feeding behavior to the energetic condition of the organism. On the other hand, food intake also shows a circadian variation synchronized to the light-dark cycle and food availability. Thus, feeding is subjected to both homeostatic and circadian regulation mechanisms that determine the amount and timing of spontaneous food intake in normal conditions. In the present study we contrasted the influence of the homeostatic versus the chronostatic mechanisms on food intake in normal conditions and in response to fasting. A group of rats was subjected to food deprivation under two different temporal schemes. A constant-length 24-h food deprivation started at different times of day resulted in an increased compensatory intake. This compensatory response showed a circadian variation that resembled the rhythm of intake in non-deprived animals. When subjected to fasting periods of increasing length (24–66 h), the amount of compensatory feeding varied according to the time of day in which food was made available, being significantly less when the fast ended in the middle of the light phase or beginning of the dark phase. These oscillatory changes did not have a correlation with variations in the level of glucose or β-hydroxybutyrate in the blood. The results suggest that the mechanism of homeostatic compensation is modulated chronostatically, presumably as part of the alternation of catabolic and anabolic states matching the daily cycles of activity.  相似文献

Rats that had been trained on fixed or variable interval schedules of food reinforcement were given oral administrations of 4, 8, 16, and 32 mg/kg of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol at various times prior to experimental sessions. The two lower doses either had no effect or increased response rates up to 8 hours post-administration. The two higher doses suppressed responding, with a maximum effect about 24 hours post-administration. Responding recovered to baseline levels about 30 hours after drug administration.  相似文献

Different studies have reported that daytime feeding entrains the circadian rhythm of corticosterone secretion in rats. However, it remained unclear whether calorie restriction or daytime feeding access have an effect. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of an 8-h daytime feeding access on the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone. Eleven adult male Wistar rats were assigned to two different conditions of access to food: ad lib feeding for one week and daytime feeding for the following two weeks. On the 7th, 14th and 21st day, blood samples were collected every 4 h from 08:00 to 04:00. Food intake and body weight were recorded daily. During daytime feeding, rats ingested 88% of the amount of food ingested over 24 h in the ad lib feeding period. However, body weight increased significantly from the first day to the end of experiment. Peak plasma corticosterone was 12 h shifted during daytime feeding period compared to the ad lib condition. This study showed that an 8-h daytime feeding entrained the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone without body weight loss or severe food restriction.  相似文献

Suppression of food intake and body weight gain by naloxone in rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect of acute and chronic administration of naloxone on food acquisition and weight gain in rats was studied in 3 experiments. One injection of a sparingly-soluble salt of naloxone in slow-release vehicle markedly lowered mean food intake over that of control rats injected with the vehicle only. Mean body weight of the naloxone-injected rats was significantly lower than that of the control group for one week.Repeated evening injections (2000 h) of naloxone hydrochloride in saline tended to reduce the night-time feeding below control levels throughout the 10-day period of naloxone administration. Food intake was significantly lower in the 4- and 8-h periods after the first injection of naloxone than that on the preceding saline control night. The initial decreases were offset by increased day-time feeding so that total daily food intake was not significantly altered over the 10 days. When saline was substituted for naloxone, food intake increased.Rats given naloxone following 24 h of fasting consumed significantly less food and gained less weight during 4 h of access to food compared to those receiving saline. After a 48-h fast naloxone-treated rats also gained significantly less body weight than those given saline, but the reduction in food intake was not statistically significant. These results suggest the possibility that endorphins may have a modulating effect on feeding activity.  相似文献

Gonadal hormones have been shown to modulate memory retention in female rats. The current experiments examine the role of testicular hormones in modulating the performance of male rats on two spatial water maze tasks. In the first study, castrated and intact rats were trained on the visible platform and hidden platform versions of the Morris water maze task. Castration did not affect performance on either version of this reference memory task with castrated and intact rats demonstrating similar performance both during acquisition and on post-training probe trials. In the second experiment, castrated and intact rats were tested on a delayed-matching-to-place version of the water maze. Rats received a series of trial pairs in the maze with a hidden platform located in the same pool location on the exposure and retention trials of each pair; between pairs of trials, however, the platform was repositioned to a novel pool location. The interval between trials was either 10- or 60-min and memory retention, taken as the difference between the pathlengths on the exposure and retention trials, declined as the interval increased. Relative to intact males, castrated males demonstrated impaired working memory retention at 60-min but not at 10-min retention intervals. This interval-dependent impairment in working memory retention was reversed by physiologic levels of testosterone replacement. These findings indicate that castration does not significantly affect acquisition or probe trial performance on a classic reference memory task but does impair spatial working memory retention, an effect that is reversed by exogenous testosterone.  相似文献

Some of the behavioural consequences of feeding and drinking in a predacious ground beetle (Pterostichus melanarius) are described. The first experiment shows that a sensitizing effect follows feeding but not drinking. The second and third experiments show that this effect, which facilitates the subsequent location of food in an open field, cannot be accounted for in terms of increased locomotion. The fourth experiment shows that the enhanced ability to locate food following feeding lasts no more than about 10 min, whilst the fifth experiment demonstrates that the sensitizing effect is not specific to the kind of food consumed, but that the consummatory response of eating is necessary. The final experiment indicates that the effect also seems to enhance the ability to locate water.  相似文献

In the experiments carried out on 94 rats the role of the function of gastric mechanoreceptors in the regulation of food and water intake was studied. We tried to assess whether this mechanoreception could serve as reinforcement in the induction of an instrumental feeding reflex. Distension of the stomach with a balloon inhibited significantly food intake in free consumption as well as in the instrumental reflex. On the other hand, no such effect was observed on water intake. The trial of development of an instrumental food reflex reinforced with stomach distension gave a negative result. The obtained results are explained as due to an ontogenetically fixed specific mode of food and water intake, and a modified concept of reduction-drive of reinforcement as proposed by Konorski is tentatively suggested for this explanation.  相似文献

The effects of injections of 50 mg/kg L-tryptophan upon meal size, meal frequency, rate of eating and satiety ratios were measured in rats whose feeding behaviour was monitored continuously over 24-h periods. A number of precautions were taken to minimize the effects of novel or stressful experimental procedures, to prevent the contamination of behaviour during periods of data collection and to maximise the detection of subtle effects on behaviour. In freely-feeding rats tryptophan brought about a significant diminution in the 24-h food intake and significantly reduced meal size. When food deprived rats were tested under similar circumstances tryptophan significantly reduced the size of the first large meal taken after the deprivation period and markedly extended the duration of the post-meal interval. The conditions adopted in this study to improve the sensitivity of the behavioural assay for feeding have made possible the detection of certain small but clear effects of tryptophan on food consumption in rats.  相似文献

Partial reinforcement (PR) effects on animal locomotor behavior were studied in the golden hamster, using food-hoarding activity as a reinforcer. The first experiment demonstrated that hoarding reinforces a running response towards the goal section of a straight-alley runway, and that no such learning occurs when sated hamsters were not allowed to hoard food. However, a second experiment using various partial reinforcement schedules and a continuous reinforcement schedule did not give any evidence for the existence of a partial reinforcement acquisition effect (PRAE). The third experiment confirmed these results with an extended training procedure and showed a slight partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) mainly in the first sessions of the extinction phase.  相似文献

These studies investigated feeding responses to indirect activation of parabrachial cannabinoid CB1 receptors. Arachidonoyl serotonin (AA5HT), an inhibitor of the endocannabinoid degradative enzyme, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), was infused into the parabrachial nucleus of male Sprague-Dawley rats, and intakes of high-fat/sucrose pellets and standard rodent chow were subsequently evaluated under various feeding schedules. FAAH blockade stimulated the intake of high-fat/sucrose pellets that were presented daily for 4 h during the light period, with compensatory decreases in the consumption of standard chow during the ensuing 20 h. These diet-selective changes were repeated on the next day, indicating a shift in feeding toward the more palatable diet that lasted for 48 h after a single infusion. The cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist, AM251, blocked the orexigenic actions of AA5HT, implicating CB1 receptors in mediating the feeding responses to FAAH inactivation. When the feeding schedule was reversed, AA5HT produced nominal increases in the consumption of standard chow for the 4-h access period, but substantial increases in the intake of high-fat/sucrose during the following 20-h interval. When presented with only high-fat/sucrose diet for 24 h, AA5HT increased 24-h food intake. In contrast, when given 24-h access only to standard chow, AA5HT failed to affect intake. Therefore, indirectly activating parabrachial CB1 receptors by blocking the degradation of native ligands selectively stimulates the intake of palatable food, with differential actions on total energy intake depending upon the feeding schedule. Our results support a role for parabrachial cannabinoid mechanisms in providing physiological regulation to neural substrates modulating feeding, energy balance, and behavioral responses for natural reward.  相似文献

Habituation and appetitive conditioning have been already described in the crab Chasmagnathus. The purpose of this work is to study whether associative learning can be obtained despite a long conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus interval. Results of the first experiment show that the weakening of temporal contiguity does not prevent appetitive conditioning to occur while after a long 4-h delay, conditioning wanes completely. A second experiment was conducted, after one and three days of training respectively, confirming the above results. Though initially neutral the context trace may be still available immediately after training and for the period of two but not after 4:00 h, demonstrating a forward limit for the conditioning window. After 3 days of training, a further decrease in the exploratory activity suggested that a longer training could increase the relative weight of habituation. Conditioning and habituation seem to work as opponent processes in the crab CHASMAGNATHUS GRANULATUS: if habituation training in the box is followed by the administration of reinforcement after a short period of time, appetitive conditioning will take place. However, as this interval is increased, habituation prevails. A persistent effect of the exposure to a given environment that may underlie trace conditioning in this crab is discussed in adaptive terms.  相似文献

Social insects exhibit complex learning and memory mechanisms while foraging. Vespula germanica (Fab.) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) is an invasive social wasp that frequently forages on undepleted food sources, making several flights between the resource and the nest. Previous studies have shown that during this relocating behavior, wasps learn to associate food with a certain site, and can recall this association 1 h later. In this work, we evaluated whether this wasp species is capable of retrieving an established association after 24 h. For this purpose, we trained free flying individuals to collect proteinaceous food from an experimental plate (feeder) located in an experimental array. A total of 150 individuals were allowed 2, 4, or 8 visits. After the training phase, the array was removed and set up again 24 h later, but this time a second baited plate was placed opposite to the first. After 24 h we recorded the rate of wasps that returned to the experimental area and those which collected food from the previously learned feeding station or the nonlearned one. During the testing phase, we observed that a low rate of wasps trained with 2 collecting visits returned to the experimental area (22%), whereas the rate of returning wasps trained with 4 or 8 collecting visits was higher (51% and 41%, respectively). Moreover, wasps trained with 8 feeding visits collected food from the previously learned feeding station at a higher rate than those that did from the nonlearned one. In contrast, wasps trained 2 or 4 times chose both feeding stations at a similar rate. Thus, significantly more wasps returned to the previously learned feeding station after 8 repeated foraging flights but not after only 2 or 4 visits. This is the first report that demonstrates the existence of long‐term spatial memory in V. germanica wasps.  相似文献
