  • Pollinator guilds may change throughout extended flowering periods, affecting plant reproductive output, especially in seasonal climates. We hypothesised a seasonal shift in pollinator guild and an autumn reduction in pollinator abundance, especially in small and sparse populations.
  • We recorded pollinator identity, abundance and behaviour in relation to flower density from plant to population throughout the extended flowering of Ononis tridentata. We evaluated female reproductive output by recording pollination success and pre‐dispersal seed predation in eight populations of contrasting size and density. Offspring quality was also characterised through seed weight and germination.
  • A diverse guild of insects visited O. tridentata in spring, while only Apis mellifera was observed in autumn. Visitation frequency did not vary seasonally, but the number of flowers per foraging bout was lower, and seeds were heavier and had a higher germination rate in autumn. Plant and neighbourhood flowering display were not related to pollinator visitation frequency or behaviour. However, the rate of fertilised ovules, seed set and autumn flowering display size were positively related to population density.
  • The maintenance of pollination in autumn enhances the reproductive performance of O. tridentata due to higher quality of autumn seed, and to a large reduction in seed predator pressure. We also suggest that observed changes in pollinator behaviour could be one of the processes behind seasonal variation in seed performance, since geitonogamous crosses were less likely to occur in autumn.

Inflorescence effects have been poorly studied, in spite of the functional relevance of the inflorescence in fruit and seed ecology. The present study focused on the effects of inflorescence size and phenology, and flower position within the inflorescence, in relation to fruit and seed production of the Mediterranean shrub Ononis fruticosa. Variability in fruit and seed production, seed weight and germination were estimated and modelled. Results confirmed that the most important predictors in seed production were inflorescence flowering time and flower position within the inflorescence. Thus, the number of mature seeds per fruit was higher in earlier inflorescences and in basal positions. On the other hand, predation was higher in fruits in basal positions. In fact, seed predation seemed to be the most important factor controlling final seed production. Models at the plant level suggested a negative incidence of geitonogamous pollination and resource limitation, which were also observed at the fruit level. This study confirmed the relevance of inflorescence effects on the reproductive output of O. fruticosa. Although the underlying processes could not be identified, our results provide several hypotheses for future experimental studies.

The annual garden spice legume Trigonella coerulea was subjected to controlled drought conditions to investigate the influence of resource limitation on flowering, seed production and germination. Limitations in water availability significantly reduced plant height and the number of fruits produced. However, treatments had no significant effect on seed set within the fruit. Fruit number per plant, rather than seed number per fruit was affected by resource limitation. Plants growing under water deficiency had higher flower abortion rates. Simultaneously, the size and germination rate of the seeds were decreased. In terms of reproductive success T. coerulea was not able to adapt reproduction to water shortage. Increase in moisture had no significant effect on seed quantity and quality when compared to the control.

Insect seed predation may vary depending on seed production. The present study considers the hypothesis that the rates of seed predation tend to be smaller in years of higher fruit production. Thus, we monitored the production of fruits and predation of seeds of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana over 2?years in the Atlantic Forest (Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil), between July 2006 and June 2008. Plots of 0.25?m2 were fitted under 20 mother plants and fruits were monthly collected for assessment of abundance and seed predation. There was variation in fruit production between the 2?years and among reproductive plants. Predation rates were high and occurred in the predispersal phase by the Curculionidae Revena rubiginosa Boheman, Anchylorhynchus aegrotus Fahraeus, and Anchylorhynchus variabilis Gyllenhal. Seed predation by these species of Anchylorhynchus is first registered in the present study. In average, about 60% of the seeds monthly produced in the population tend to escape insect predation in year of high or low production, becoming available for recruitment. The predation rate was not related to the amount of fruits produced per reproductive plant. Also, different than expected, there was a positive relation between the rates of seed predation and the total of fruits produced monthly on the plots. Thus, no evidence for the satiation of insect seed predators was found in this study with S. romanzoffiana.

We examined the reproductive success of the perennial herb Lobularia maritima during its extended flowering and fruiting season. The within- and between-year variability of the female components of reproductive success (from flower, fruit and seed production to seed survival, seed germination and seedling establishment) were analysed during four flowering seasons. All the components of reproductive success studied showed a significant within- and between-year variation. September was the period of the year with the maximum values of flower and fruit production, and the highest germination and establishment rates. Nevertheless, seed losses due to both predispersal and postdispersal seed predation during this period were also the highest, seriously reducing seed output in this period. On the other hand, in those periods in which seed production was low, i.e. January and May, the percentage of seeds lost to seed predators was the lowest. Reproductive success in each period of the flowering season was estimated using a simple demographic model, in which the information concerning all the components already calculated was integrated. The two variables used to estimate reproductive success in each period, i.e. the number of new individuals produced per plant and the probability of a seed becoming an adult plant, showed relatively small differences over the year. These results suggest a counter-balance of the different components of reproductive success in this species, with favourable and unfavourable periods for the different components being compensated during its extended flowering season.

Field studies on two populations of Agalinis strictifolia were conducted over a 3-year period to investigate the relationship between flowering time of individuals and plant size, flowering duration, flower and fruit production, fruit predation, and growth rate. Seasonal patterns of pollinator visitation were compared with those of individual flowering time, flower density, percent fruit production, and mean seeds/fruit. In general, early and middle flowering individuals (as determined by either first flowering date or peak flowering) were larger, flowered longer, and produced more flowers and fruits than late flowering individuals. Early and middle flowering individuals (based on first flowering date) also grew faster than late flowering individuals. Although early and middle flowering individuals produced more fruits, fruit predators did not damage a disproportionate number of fruits compared to late flowering individuals. Patterns of bee visitation showed no association with seasonal patterns of flower density, percent fruit production, mean seed/fruit, or individual flowering time. In populations of A. strictifolia, it would seem that biotic or environmental determinants of growth rate (hence size and reproductive success) may be more important in generating variation in individual flowering time than patterns of pollinator visitation or fruit predation.

The reproductive output of many plants depends on the interaction between plant spatial pattern and pollinator behaviour. Pollinators tend to concentrate their efforts on patches of flowers offering higher rewards. The spatial relationship of an individual plant to those around it (its spatial context) is also important for its reproductive output. This study examines the effect of patch size and spatial context on the reproductive output of Puya hamata, a hummingbird-pollinated, semelparous, giant rosette plant in the Andes. Hummingbird behavioural response to Puya patch size and the effect of plant density on flowering plant size were assessed. The reproductive output (flower, fruit and seed production, seed viability, germination rates) of plants in relation to patch size and spatial context was determined. Isolated Puya inflorescences were visited by a higher diversity of mostly trap-lining hummingbirds, while plants in aggregations were almost exclusively visited by one territorial species. Spatial context did not affect Puya size at flowering, or the numbers of flowers, fruits and seeds produced. However, with respect to seed viability and germination rates, reproductive output was highest in isolated plants, and plants on the edges of patches, but lowest in plants at the centre of large patches. The effect of spatial context on reproductive output in P. hamata depends on several key conditions being met: the patches are normally made up of closely related plants and the pollinators, by switching to territoriality, restrict gene flow into patches and lower the effective reproductive output of the plants within those patches. Other plant–pollinator relationships meeting these conditions are likely to produce similar outcomes. Such situations are worthy of attention, not just for their ecological interest, but also for their implications for the management of species and genetic diversity.

In order to produce seeds, animal-pollinated plants must flower synchronously with and be attractive to their pollinators while avoiding antagonists. Here, we explore temporal and inter-individual patterns in pollination and pre-dispersal seed predation of Dianthus sylvestris by Hadena moths, within and among three sex morphs. We scored plants that started flowering at different periods in 2001 and 2003 and found that fruit set decreased and predation rates increased over one season, and most of the other season, granting a female reproductive advantage to early flowering plants, though, we found no morph-specific temporal patterns. Female plants set more fruits, and more of their fruits escaped predation in one year, but this did not grant them a reproductive advantage since they produce fewer flowers per plant than the other morphs. Instead, mixed plants showed a clear female reproductive advantage. We also examined predation types by Hadena and seed production in attacked and intact fruits of individually marked flowers. Though female Hadena moths laid eggs preferentially into perfect flowers, flower sexes suffered similar predation by itinerant caterpillars. Attacked fruits contained fewer and lighter seeds than un-attacked ones. We conclude that pre-dispersal seed predation by Hadena may select on flowering onset of this sexually polymorphic species.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects that plant growth regulators (PGRs) have on seed production of Jatropha curcas when they are used for chemical pruning. In the subsequent year, following a single foliar application of PGRs, flowering, fruit set, fruit characteristics, seed total oil content and oil free fatty acid (FFA) content were evaluated. The number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per bunch, fruit- and seed characteristics and seed oil content were significantly affected by the different treatments. However, there were no variations in the degree of fruit set or oil FFA content. A single foliar application of N6-benzyladenine produced more flowers per plant, more fruits per bunch, heavier and bigger fruits and seeds with more oil compared to manual pruning. Treatment with 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid yielded more flowers per plant and heavier fruits with a higher oil content than the control and manually pruned plants. Treatment with 2,3:4,6-di-O-isopropylidene-2-keto-l-gulonic acid yielded similar results. More fruits per bunch and more seeds per fruit were also produced. Maleic hydrazide treatment yielded more flowers per plant, heavier and bigger fruits with more, heavier, oil rich seeds compared to the control and manual pruning. This study indicates that foliar application of PGRs as chemical pruners in J. curcas may have a sequential effect in boosting seed production, seed oil content and improves fruit quality.

Variation in fruit production and pre-dispersal seed predation by Argyresthia conjugella was studied in␣four populations of Sorbus aucuparia in northern Sweden.␣The number of infructescences, fruits per infructescence, consumed seeds and developed unattacked seeds per fruit were scored in marked trees from 1984 to 1990. The results showed that the number of fruits produced in each population determined the number of seed predators occurring in the host population, as the yearly number of seed predators was significantly and positively correlated with yearly number of fruits, in all but one population. The seed predators showed a delay in response to variation in number of fruits produced. This lag in response resulted in a large proportion of fruits being attacked and seeds consumed in a bad fruiting year that followed a good fruiting year, and vice versa. The proportion of fruits attacked and seeds consumed was largest in the population showing the greatest between-year variation in fruit production and lowest in the population showing the lowest between-year variation in fruit production. Furthermore, the individuals within the former population were synchronised, while they were not in the latter population. These results contradict one of the possible explanations of mast-seeding, where large synchronised between-year variation is supposed to reduce pre-dispersal seed predation. Instead, differences in attraction of the seed predator to differences in fruit crop size could explain the observed difference in seed predation between the two populations with opposite fruiting patterns. Within each population, irrespective of year, the proportion of fruits attacked and seeds consumed was independent of a tree's fruiting display. Therefore, trees with high fruit production, despite harbouring the largest number of seed predators, produced the largest number of developed seeds in absolute numbers, compared to trees that produced few fruits.

Reproductive performance and phenology in gynodioecious Ochradenus baccatus was investigated at Wadi Degla, in Egypt's arid Eastern Desert. Between January and December 2005, plants representing a series of size classes were identified from two populations, located ca. 7.5 km apart. A total of 94 individuals were marked and classified according to sex expression and overall size/canopy volume. Reproductive phenology was monitored across the year. Plants presented an extended reproductive phenology having two peaks, in spring and autumn. Plant size was a significant factor influencing reproductive output and phenology. Fruit number, seeds-per-fruit and seed mass all varied significantly among the size classes of both female and hermaphrodite plants, during both spring and autumn phenophases. Numbers of fruit and seeds-per-fruit were greater in spring than autumn, and female forms had greater fruit numbers, seed mass and percent germination, and fewer seeds-per-fruit than hermaphrodites. Numbers of fruits, seeds-per-fruit and seed mass were all significantly positively correlated with plant size. Seeds produced at the larger downstream population had greater seed germination rates than those from the upper site. Results are discussed in terms of plant size and directed seed dispersal patterns.

Thymelaea velutina (Thymelaeaceae) is a dioecious shrub that presents a unique type of heterocarpy which consists of the simultaneous production of dry and fleshy fruits. It is endemic to the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean) and is found both in dunes and mountain areas. The goal of this study was to identify which factors influence the production of both fruit types, examining the variation of their effects at a spatio-temporal scale (comparing two localities in different years). Specifically, we investigated (1) whether pollen limitation influences the type of fruit produced, and (2) the possible differences in seed size, mass, dispersal capacity, seed predation, germination patterns and seedling survival between fruit types. We also examined if the production of fleshy fruits was modified with the application of gibberellins to reproductive branches. Although fleshy fruits were consistently more abundant than dry ones at both populations, their proportion was significantly higher at the site with greater precipitation. The addition of either pollen or gibberellins did not affect the proportion of each fruit type. Seeds in fleshy fruits are consistently larger, heavier and more likely to be dispersed than seeds in dry fruits, but germinability, germination rate and seedling survival was similar among fruit types. Heterocarpy in this species is currently maintained as there is no apparent factor that exerts any strong selective pressure on either fruit type. The two fruit types might even have different `functions', one serving especially for dispersal and population expansion and the other for producing a seed bank that ensures an eventual germination.

Astragalus australis var. olympicus is an endemic plant of the Olympic Mountains, Washington. It is considered a Species of Concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This study focused on the reproductive biology of the plant from flower production through seed germination to identify possible weak points that might contribute to its rarity and impede its conservation. Most plants produced a large mean number of flowers and ovules (314.8 and 4106, respectively), but relatively few of these formed fruits and seeds (25.8 and 3.8%, respectively). In decreasing importance, ovules in fruits were lost to predation, seed abortion, and lack of fertilization. The percentages of these fates differed among sites and years. Excluding pollinators by bagging flowers reduced fruit set by ∼50%, but seed set per fruit and seed mass were unaffected. Germination was affected by scarification, temperature, and moisture availability. About 11% of seeds damaged by predispersal seed predators (weevil larvae) remained viable and were released from dormancy. I hypothesize that predispersal seed predation (over 80% at one site) has a negative effect on population growth. Conservation of this species could benefit from improved fruit set and decreased seed predation.

This study investigated the effects of climate on reproduction, consecutive flowering, and the level of energy investment toward sexual reproduction, as well as the relationships between flowering rates and plant size, and between seed production and plant size. The target species wasHeloniopsis orientalis C. Tanaka (Liliaceae), an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant. Natural populations were monitored in permanent quadrats for seven years in a low-elevation area (Namhansanseong) and for five years in an area with a high elevation (Maranggol). The Tn indices required for flowering were relatively similar each year, but those for seed dispersal fluctuated. The period for seed production was proportional to the total length of the growing season. Rates of flowering varied annually, and depended on conditions in each study area. Flowering was discontinuous (i.e., not consecutive) at Namhansanseong, but was continuous (i.e., consecutive) at Maranggol. The rates were proportional to plant size; the minimum size class that supported flowering was 60–90 cm2, and almost all plants with >210 cm2 leaf area flowered. The overlapping range in plant size between flowering and non-flowering plants was relatively broad. Numbers of fruit per plant ranged from 1-12, with an average of 6.0 fruits at Namhansanseong and 5.0 fruits at Maranggol. In the latter area, the range in the number of seeds produced and their weight per plant varied drastically, being 1700–1867 seeds and 133.2–177.5 mg, respectively. Almost all correlation coefficients between plant size and fruit number, plant size and seed number, or plant size and seed weight were significant at the 1% level. Lastly, energy investment rates for sexual reproduction were about 30–50% of the net productivity, varying over the years. These rates were proportional to growth rates.

Seed predators that severely affect seed germination rates are well known for many plant species. Here, we hypothesised that due to differences in resource allocation within fruits, seed predation can negatively affect non-predated seeds in infested fruits when predation occurs during fruit maturation (a ‘top-down’ effect). We addressed this question using a system of bruchid beetles on Mimosa trees and we also investigated whether seed quality (nitrogen concentration) affects beetle body mass, which would have implications for adult fitness (‘bottom-up’ effect). To assess spatial variation, bottom-up and top-down effects were investigated in two plant populations. Nitrogen concentration was significantly higher in seeds from non-infested fruits than from infested fruits. This supports the hypothesis that resource allocation may differ between seeds from infested and non-infested fruits. Germination experiments showed that seeds from non-infested fruits germinated better than non-predated seeds from infested fruits. It was also confirmed that seed quality affected bruchid body mass. There was also evidence that more resources were taken from well-developed seeds. These results showed that seed predation can damage non-predated seeds.

Summary We examined the relationship between flowering phenology, reproductive success (seed production only), and seed head herbivory for 20 similarly sized clones of Erigeron glaucus growing at Bodega Bay Reserve, northern California, USA. Although clones tended to reach peak flowering on the same date, they differed in the proportion of their total flowers produced around that date (flowering synchrony). Clones also differed in the number and density of flower heads presented at any one time to pollinators and herbivores (floral display). Both of these characteristics had consequences for herbivory and plant reproductive success. The proportion of flower heads damaged by insect herbivores was greater for clones that concentrated flowering activity during the main flowering period for the population as a whole (high synchrony) compared to clones that spread flowering out temporally. The primary reason for this result was that clones with low flowering synchrony produced a significant proportion of their flower heads during the fall and therefore, escaped attack by the tephritid fly, Tephritis ovatipennis. Clones with intermediate synchrony had lower seed success (total number of viable seeds produced over the year) than clones with either low or high synchrony. The proportion of flower heads damaged by insect herbivores and number of tephritid flies reared from flower heads were both negatively correlated to floral display while seed head mass and germination rates were positively related to display. Thus, clones which produced dense floral displays were favored both in terms of reduced herbivory and increased successful seed production.

The predator satiation hypothesis states that synchronous periodic production of seeds is an adaptive strategy evolved to reduce the pressure of seed predators. The seed production pattern is crucial to the predator satiation hypothesis, but there are few studies documenting the success of individuals that are in synchrony and out of synchrony with the whole population. This study is based on long-term data on seed production of Sorbus aucuparia and specialised pre-dispersal seed predation by Argyresthia conjugella, in a subalpine spruce forest in the Western Carpathians (Poland). At the population level, we tested whether functional and numerical responses of predators to the variation of fruit production operate. At the individual level, we tested whether individuals with higher interannual variability in their own seed crops and higher synchrony with the population have higher percentages of uninfested fruits. The intensity of pre-dispersal seed predation was high (average 70 %; range 19–100 %). There were both functional and numerical responses of predators to the variation of fruit production at the population level. We found that individuals that were expected to be preferred under seed predator pressure had higher reproductive success. With increasing synchrony of fruit production between individual trees and the population, the percentage of infested fruits decreased. There was also a negative relationship between the interannual variation in individual fruit production and the percentage of infested fruits. These results confirm selection for individuals with a masting strategy. However, the population does not seem well adapted to strong seed predation pressure and we suggest that this may be a result of prolonged diapause of A. conjugella.

Seed predation may reduce recruitment in populations that are limited by the availability of seeds rather than microsites. Fires increase the availability of both seeds and microsites, but in plants that lack a soil- or canopy-stored seed bank, post-fire recruitment is often delayed compared to the majority of species. Pyrogenic flowering species, such as Telopea speciosissima, release their non-dormant seeds more than 1 year after fire, by which time seed predation and the availability of microsites may differ from that experienced by plants recruiting soon after fire. I assessed the role of post-dispersal seed predation in limiting seedling establishment after fire in T. speciosissima, in southeastern Australia. Using a seed-planting experiment, I manipulated vertebrate access to seeds and the combined cover of litter and vegetation within experimental microsites in the 2 years of natural seed fall after a fire. Losses to vertebrate and invertebrate seed predators were rapid and substantial, with 50% of seeds consumed after 2 months in exposed locations and after 5 months when vertebrates were excluded. After 7 months, only 6% of seeds or seedlings survived, even where vertebrates were excluded. Removing litter and vegetation increased the likelihood of seed predation by vertebrates, but had little influence on losses due to invertebrates. Microsites with high-density vegetation and litter cover were more likely to have seed survival or germination than microsites with low-density cover. Recruitment in pyrogenic flowering species may depend upon the release of seeds into locations where dense cover may allow them to escape from vertebrate predators. Even here, conditions suitable for germination must occur soon after seed release for seeds to escape from invertebrate predators. Seed production will also affect recruitment after any one fire, while the ability of some juvenile and most adult plants to resprout after fire buffers populations against rapid declines when there is little successful recruitment.
