Dichogamy in Salicornieae species is not clearly described in literature, and its efficiency remains untested. In this work we aim to establish the pathway for flower development, the degree of interaction between the two sexes, and the efficiency in overcoming selfing. Flower development was studied in six populations of four Salicornieae species at the Odiel Marsh Natural Park (Huelva, SW Spain) by calculating the percentage of different floral phases established in accordance with the position of their stamens and stigmas. To study the sexual functionality of each phase, the lengths of the perianth, stigma, and ovule were measured, and the number of germinated pollen grains on the stigmas was counted. In the Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Salicornia ramosissima populations, the stigma protrudes from the perianth when the anthers have shed their pollen. In the Sarcocornia fruticosa and Sarcocornia perennis populations, anthesis starts with the extrusion of one anther, but in the most common pattern the stigma protrudes from the perianth while the anthers are shedding their pollen. All species studied were morphologically protandrous, but only in one population of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum was the number of germinated pollen grains on the stigma significantly greater when the stigma was exserted than in the previous phases.  相似文献

The size of pollen in the genus Hordeum (Poaceae) is correlated with ploidy level and breeding system. Generally, the pollen size increases with the ploidy level, and outbreeding species possess significantly larger pollen than inbreeders. In H. roshevitzii (2x), H. pusilplum (2x), H. murinum subsp. murinum (4x), and H. parodii (6x) pollen, heteromorphisms occur between the central and the lateral florets of the triplet. In all four taxa, pollen from florets in which the anthers are exserted is larger than pollen from florets where the anthers remain inside the floret. The biological consequences of heteromorphic pollen are discussed, and a model for the evolution of breeding strategies in Hordeum is suggested.  相似文献

Both the floral biology and morphometrics of two Japanese species of AsianDisporum (sectionEudisporum) are presented. These two species,D. sessile andD. smilacinum, represent extremes in both floral morphology and divergence in pollination within the section. The inverted flowers ofD. sessile have an elongate floral tube formed by the imbrication of the oblanceolate tepals. The tepal bases are modified into well developed, saccate nectaries. The stamens have rigid, vertical filaments which tightly encircle the ovary-style axis, and extrorse anthers located within a floral cavity which can accommodate a large pollinator (cross-pollination). The stigma is exserted and the depth of its cleft formation constant.D. smilacinum, in contrast, has an open, nodding campanulate flower with lanceolate tepals which have only shallow nectaries at their bases. The stamens have widely divergent filaments with versatile anthers that have laterally introrse dehiscence (wind and/or self-pollination). The depth of the stigma cleft is variable. For both species, the pattern of differential UV absorption and reflectance is similar. It is suggested on morphological grounds and by pollinator observation, thatD. sessile with a high energy flower requiring specialized visitors represents a more advanced condition than that observed inD. smilacinum, which is more generalized and primitive. Seasonal herbivore pressure on the tepal nectaries ofD. sessile is discussed in relation to its pollination.  相似文献

Buddleja davidii is a widespread shrub in Asia while B. yunnanensis is a narrowly endemic species limited to Yunnan Province, China. To explore whether floral volatiles, morphological characters of flower and seed and breeding system are correlated with their distributions, we measured length and width of corolla, trichome density at corolla throat, level of stigma/anthers relationship, seed size and weight. The results indicated that these characteristics were significantly different between the two species (P < 0.01). Bagging experiments revealed that B. davidii is a self-incompatible plant while B. yunnanensis is self-compatible. Thick trichome density at the corolla throat may reduce out-crossing in B. yunnanensis. Autogamy plays an important role in fruit production of this species while B. davidii requires pollinators for fruiting. Scents were collected using dynamic headspace adsorption method and identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In total, 27 floral scent compounds were identified. The volatile composition in the two species was very different. We attempted to determine if these features, associated with commonness and with rarity found in these two taxa, could also help to explain the distribution pattern of other species of the genus Buddleja.  相似文献

通过野外观测及光学解剖,观察了斗竹(Oligostachyum spongiosum)开花林相、开花动态、花器官构造、结实情况,以及花后林相更新等生物学特性,采用光学显微技术结合石蜡制片,对斗竹的大、小孢子的发生及雌、雄配子体的发育过程进行研究。结果表明:(1)斗竹为一次性整体开花竹类,花期为4月下旬~5月下旬,花期约持续45 d,成花量大。(2)花序为圆锥状混合花序,每花序由4枚小穗构成;小穗细长,每枚小穗由5~17枚小花组成;小花为颖花,顶部小花不发育,外稃、内稃各1枚;浆片3枚,卵圆形;雄蕊4~6枚(多为6),每枚花药具有4个花粉囊,花药壁发育为基本型,绒毡层为腺质型,小孢子四分体为左右对称型,成熟花粉粒为2 细胞型,球形,表面纹饰颗粒状,具单个萌发孔,花粉发育过程中部分花药出现异常收缩及空腔的败育花粉粒;雌蕊1枚,柱头3叉,羽毛状,子房1室,胚珠倒生,厚珠心,胚囊为蓼型,成熟胚囊结构及发育过程均正常;雌雄同熟,异花授粉,果实为颖果。(3)斗竹花后全林死亡,结实率低,自然条件下结实率为8.1%。研究结果为研究竹子系统分类、开花机制,开展杂交育种及竹林更新复壮工作等提供基础性资料。  相似文献

A comparative study of the floral structure in the species of the genus Rhapis (Arecaceae, Coryphoideae, Rhapidinae) is presented. Flowers are mainly unisexual, with three sepals, three petals, 6 stamens or staminodes and three carpels or carpellodes. Some evidences of basal congenital and apical postgenital fusion of the carpels, first time reported in the genus, were observed in the gynoecium. Ovules are basally attached and crassinucellate; they appear to be slightly anatropous. The morphology of the filaments suggests a division of the species into two groups: Rhapis excelsa and R. subtilis exhibit thick and keeled filaments, whereas R. gracilis, R. humilis, R. laosensis, R. micrantha and R. multifida have slender, non-keeled filaments. Relationships of Rhapis with the rest of the genera of Rhapidinae are inferred on the light of floral structure.  相似文献

Syconia (enclosed infructescences) infested with host-specific species of Schistonchus (Aphelenchoididae) were collected from six species of Ficus (Moraceae) native to Florida or Panama. They were sectioned and histologically examined to assess the effects of parasitism. Parasitism by Schistonchus spp. was associated with hypertrophied cells, tissue necrosis, and the presence of an exudate in all species. Occasional hypertrophy of the outer epidermal cells occurred on seed florets, wasp florets, and on the endothecial cells of male florets in F. aurea (subgenus Urostigma) from Florida. Aberrations of the inner mesocarp occurred under the hypertrophied cells on seed florets. In F. laevigata (subgenus Urostigma) from Florida, Schistonchus sp. infested immature male florets and was associated with hypertrophy of endothecial cells, epidermal cells of the anther filaments, and anthers. Schistonchus sp. also caused aberrations of the anther filament, anthers, and pollen. Ficus poponoei (subgenus Urostigma) and F. glabrata (subgenus Pharmacosycea), both from Panama, had hypertrophied outer epidermal cells on seed florets. Ficus poponoei also had Schistonchus sp. within the pedicel of an aborted floret, with hypertrophy of the cortical parenchyma. Ficus trigonata (subgenus Urostigma) from Panama had hypertrophy of the outer epidermis of seed florets. When the outer epidermis on these florets was missing, the inner mesocarp was hypertrophied. Ficus maxima (subgenus Pharmacosycea) from Panama had hypertrophy on the outer epidermis of seed and aborted florets. Schistonchus spp. were not found in wasp larvae or pupae in any of the Ficus spp. examined. Hypertrophy was never observed in the absence of Schistonchus spp.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Preliminary field observations in 2001 and 2002 suggested that Kingdonia uniflora (Circaeasteraceae, Ranunculales) exhibits heterodichogamy, an unusual kind of reproductive heteromorphy, hitherto unreported in Ranunculales and known from only one other genus in basal eudicots.

Methods

During several subsequent years flowers were observed in the field. Flowers were fixed in FAA and studied with microtome sections series and with the scanning electron microscope.

Key Results

The flowers proved to be heterodichogamous, with protandrous and protogynous morphs, which have a 1 : 1 ratio. Both morphs equally set fruit. Each year a single flower is formed at the tip of a rhizome or more rarely two flowers. The flowers are already open when they appear at the soil surface, before they are receptive and before pollen is dispersed. In both floral morphs the styles elongate early and the stigmas are positioned above the anthers before anthesis begins. In protogynous flowers the stigmas become receptive in this position; later the styles become reflexed and then the anthers dehisce. In contrast, in protandrous flowers the stamen filaments elongate during early anthesis such that the dehiscing anthers come to lie above the (still unreceptive) stigmas; after dehiscence of all anthers in a flower the styles begin to elongate and become receptive.

Conclusions

This is the first record of heterodichogamy in a representative of Ranunculales, in an herbaceous eudicot, and in a plant with uniflorous ramets. The occurrence of heterodichogamy in Kingdonia in which clonal reproduction appears to be dominant might be an adaptation to avoid mating between the ramets from a common mother individual (genet).Key words: Kingdonia, Circaeasteraceae, Ranunculales, heterodichogamy, reproductive heteromorphy  相似文献

It is known from two localities in Namaqualand: near Kamieskroon and at the foot of the Matsikammaberge, where it grows in ephemeral wetlands. We studied the inflorescence, and in particular ontogeny and development of the florets in Senecio vernalis as a representative member of Asteraceae, using epi-illumination microscopy. Initiation and subsequent development of florets on the highly convex inflorescence apex occur acropetally, except for pistillate ray florets, which show a lag in initiation. Receptacular bracts derive from the receptacular surface after development of all florets. The order of whorl initiation in both disc and ray florets include corolla, androecium and finally the pappus, together with the gynoecium. Development of corolla lobes from a ring meristem occurs in bidirectional order starting from the lateral side, whereas stamens incept unidirectionally from the abaxial side. Concurrently with the inception of two median carpel primordia, a ring meristem develops at the base of the corolla from which pappus bristles differentiate in later stages. Pistillate ray florets show significant differences from perfect disc florets as reflected by the zygomorphic shape of the floral apex and a shift of floral merosity from pentamery to tetramery. Loss of stamens in ray florets occurs due to abortion of primordia after initiation.  相似文献

Seven species from five genera of Annonaceae were studied with regard to their flower biology and pollination in the Southwest Province of Cameroon, West Africa. They have protogynous hermaphroditic flowers, with exception of Uvariopsis species, which are monoecious. Fused petals of Isolona campanulata remain apically spreading and open during anthesis but form a deep basal urceolate tube around the reproductive organs. At anthesis the yellow pendent flowers emit a fruit-like scent and attracted small beetles, the likely pollinators. Piptostigma sp. flowers also emit a fruit-like scent but provide a closed pollination chamber formed by the three inner petals. Small staphylinid beetles attracted during the female stage of anthesis are released from the flowers at the end of the male stage 2-3 days later. Both species have diurnal anthesis, attracting and releasing the flower visitors during daytime. In contrast, Uvariodendron connivens and U. calophyllum have nocturnal anthesis with floral thermogenesis, produce spicy, aromatic and fruity scents and attract large Scarabaeidae beetles, the pollinators, along with many curculionid beetles, which were principally predators of the thick petals. The very large flowers of Monodora tenuifolia have yellowish petals which are spotted with dark red markings. Together with the sweetish, slightly disagreeable scent the flowers attract flies, principally dung flies. The two investigated Uvariopsis species are monoecious with pistillate and staminate flowers being functional at the same time. The violet red flowers of U. bakeriana visually seem to mimic the fruiting body of certain stinkhorn fungi (Phallaceae) although without producing their strong unpleasant carcass stench. Flower-visiting dung flies were rare. Conversely, U. congolana has a strong fungus-like scent, its flowers are presented at litter height and dung flies living in the litter were the flower visitors, albeit sporadic. The 4-5 days lasting anthesis of both Uvariopsis species appears to be an evolutionary consequence of their diffuse pollinator spectra. The studied African Annonaceae therefore have either cantharophilous or myiophilous/sapromyiophilous flowers with, in part, respectively, remarkably long anthesis, thermogenesis, and widely open, large flowers - all attributes unknown or rare in the hitherto better studied Neotropical Annonaceae.  相似文献

Floral scent is a highly complex and variable floral characteristic that is involved in pollinator attraction. One possible cause for variation in floral scent can be sexual identity of the flower. Here, we examine the floral scent bouquet of a synchronously dichogamous shrub, Canella winterana (L.) Gaertn.We used dynamic headspace extraction and gas chromatography – mass spectroscopy, followed by statistical analysis using non-metric multidimensional scaling, SIMPER, MANOVA, and PERMANOVA to identify and compare the scent profiles of Canella winterana in its female and male phase for multiple individuals as well as multiple inflorescences of a single tree over one cycle of its entire sexual phase transition. The scent profile of C. winterana is composed of 49 volatile organic compounds and dominated by five compounds. We found no evidence for distinct male or female scent profiles; however, there were significant differences in scent emission between different sexes within some individuals. Two compounds explained over half of the variation between sexual stages within individuals. Our exploration of a single tree's sexual phase transition, including neuter phase, found that five compounds dominated the female phase scent bouquet and that female phase was distinct from male and neuter phase. This study offers new insight into the role that variability in floral scent between sexual phases might play in variable pollinator behavioral responses. These results suggest partial support for two distinct hypotheses regarding the differences between the sex phases (1) honest signaling and (2) sexual mimicry.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Why are sterile anthers and carpels retained in some flowering plants, given their likely costs? To address this question, a cryptically dioecious species, Petasites tricholobus, in which male and female plants each have two floret types that appear pistillate and hermaphroditic, was studied. The aim was to understand the function of sterile hermaphroditic florets in females. In addition, the first examination of functions of sterile female structures in male plants was conducted in the hermaphroditic florets on males of this species. These female structures are exceptionally large in this species despite being sterile.

Methods

Differences in floret morphology between the sex morphs were documented and the possible functions of sterile sex organs investigated using manipulative experiments. Tests were carried out to find out if sterile female structures in male florets attract pollinators and if they aid in pollen dispersal, also to find out if the presence and quantity of sterile hermaphroditic florets in females increase pollinator attraction and reproductive success. To investigate what floret types provide nectar, all types of florets were examined under a scanning electron microscope to search for nectaries.

Key Results

The sterile female structures in male florets did not increase pollinator visits but were essential to secondary pollen presentation, which significantly enhanced pollen dispersal. Sterile pistillate florets on male plants did not contribute to floral display and disappeared in nearly half of the male plants. The sterile hermaphroditic florets on female plants attracted pollinators by producing nectar and enhanced seed production.

Conclusions

The presence of female structures in male florets and hermaphroditic florets on female plants is adaptive despite being sterile, and may be evolutionarily stable. However, the pistillate florets on male plants appear non-adaptive and are presumably in decline. Differential fates of the sterile sex organs in the species are determined by both the historical constraints and the ecological functions.  相似文献

Particular floral phenotypes are often associated with specific groups of pollinators. However, flowering plants are often visited, and may be effectively pollinated by more than one type of animal. Therefore, a major outstanding question in floral biology asks: what is the nature of selection on floral traits when pollinators are diverse? This study examined how hummingbirds selected on the floral traits of Polemonium brandegeei, a species pollinated by both hummingbirds and hawkmoths. In array populations of P. brandegeei, we measured pollen movement, and female (seeds set) and male (seeds sired) fitness under hummingbird pollination. We then compared the patterns of selection by hummingbirds with our previous study examining selection by hawkmoths. We documented contrasting selection on sex organ positioning through female function, with hummingbirds selecting for stigmas exserted beyond the anthers and hawkmoths selecting for stigmas recessed below the anthers. Furthermore, hummingbirds selected for longer and wider corolla tubes, and hawkmoths selected for narrower corolla tubes. Therefore, contrasting selection by hawkmoths and hummingbirds may account for variation in sex organ arrangements and corolla dimensions in P. brandegeei. We documented how floral traits under selection by multiple pollinators can result in either an intermediate “compromise” between selective pressures (sex organs) or apparent specialization (corolla tube length) to one pollinator.  相似文献

The genus Setaria is economically important because many species are cultivated for grains or forage. Setaria magna is an American species, native to North America and introduced in South America. The morphological aspect of this species is similar to S. italica (foxtail millet), suggesting its potential value as a crop. The purpose of this work was to understand the breeding system (self-pollination vs. open pollination) of S. magna; additionally, the floral development was described. The results of the breeding system analysis indicated that S. magna is mainly autogamous and does not appear to have a self-incompatibility mechanism. The floral development observed was similar to that described for other Paniceae; in most of the spikelets only the upper anthecium developed fruit, but a small number of spikelets presented bisexual lower florets. These spikelets produced two caryopses per spikelet. Thus, S. magna can produced two types of dispersal units; a few whitish naked caryopses from the lower anthecium that fall without their lemma and palea at maturity; and a high number of brown caryopses protected by the lemma and palea from the upper anthecium. The presence of a normal embryo sac in the upper anthecium suggests that S. magna would present normal sexual reproduction, although we can not reject the formation of apomitic seeds in the lower anthecium.  相似文献

Dracunculus vulgaris is a protogynous arum lily with thermogenic inflorescences consisting of male and female florets on a spadix within a floral chamber. Above the chamber, an odour-producing appendix and a carrion-coloured spathe attract flying insects. The inflorescence shows a triphasic warming pattern. The floral chamber warms weakly on the first night as the spathe opens. Then the appendix produces a large amount of heat and a powerful scent during the first day. As the appendix cools on the second night, scent production ceases and the floral chamber rewarms. Warming ceases when the pollen is shed on the second day. The heating pattern is associated with attraction of pollinating insects by the appendix on the first day, entrapment in the warm chamber at night and release after pollen shedding. The temperature in the floral chamber is regulated at around 18 °C during the second night. The oxygen consumption rate of the florets is inversely related to the ambient temperature as in other thermoregulatory flowers. Conversely, the oxygen consumption rate of the appendix is directly related to the ambient temperature, indicating that it does not thermoregulate. Thus, temperature regulation is not associated with scent production, but with some activity inside the floral chamber.  相似文献

The maintenance of flower size variation within populations might be explained by conflicting selection pressures on floral traits that may involve biological agents, such as mutualists and antagonists, and allocation costs associated with floral display. The annual species Madia sativa (Asteraceae) exhibits ample variation in the number of ray florets in natural populations. This field study aimed at evaluating the costs and benefits associated with floral traits in M. sativa. In particular, we addressed two main questions: (1) Is the number of ray florets positively associated with pollinator visitation rate? (2) Is there a fitness cost of ray floret maintenance when pollinators are absent? We detected one benefit of conspicuous ray capitula: a strong preference by insect pollinators. We also confirmed the occurrence of costs: when pollinators were excluded conspicuous ray capitula had a reduced reproductive assurance via autogamous selfing, and there were trade-offs between the number of ray florets and seed mass and seed germination. Results suggest that the maintenance of within-population variation in the number of ray florets in M. sativa is explained, at least in part, by the balance between costs and benefits associated with this floral trait.  相似文献

What causes flowers to diverge? While a plant's primary pollinator should strongly influence floral phenotype, selective pressures may also be exerted by other flower visitors or competition with other plants for pollination. Species of the primarily bat‐pollinated genus Burmeistera (Campanulaceae) frequently cooccur, with up to four species in a given site, and broadly overlap in flowering phenology, typically flowering throughout the year. The genus displays extensive interspecific variation in floral morphology in the degree that the reproductive parts (anthers and stigma) are exserted outside of the corolla, and species can be roughly classified as either long or short‐exserted. I tested two hypotheses regarding the functional significance of such variation: (1) exsertion lengths correspond to pollination by bat species of different sizes; and (2) variation serves to partition pollinator's bodies spatially and thus reduces interspecific pollen transfer. I captured bats in Ecuador to evaluate the identity and location of the Burmeistera pollen they were carrying. Results show that exsertion does not correspond to specialization on different pollinators; different bat species carried pollen of both flower types just as frequently. In support of the second hypothesis, pollen from flowers of different exsertion lengths was found to occur on different regions of bats' heads. This may serve to reduce competition for pollination among coexisting Burmeistera.  相似文献
