In some parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra states (India), a leguminous undershrub, Cassia uniflora has effectively replaced the problematic weed Parthenium hysterophorus (parthenium). The studies revealed that the phenolic leachates from different parts of C. uniflora, specially from germinating seeds significantly inhibited the germination of parthenium seeds and retarded the growth of
seedlings from the successfully germinated parthenium seeds. At field level, seedlings of C. uniflora outcompeted the seedlings of summer generation of parthenium causing reduction in height, dry weight and number of inflorescences
of the latter which ultimately resulted in reduction of their seed output. Because of its longer life span, C. uniflora effectively prevented the establishment of parthenium plants of the winter generation in its area of growth. Results indicate
that C. uniflora replaces parthenium through interference. 相似文献

A sequel to the work of systematic surveying the mycobiota of Lantana camara aimed at finding potential biocontrol agents, was carried out during 1995–1996 covering part of its centre of origin in Brazil (state of Minas Gerais). Fifty-eight sampling sites, representing the four main climatic types in the state of Minas Gerais, were surveyed. Additional ad hoc collections were made in the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, Paraná Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Fifteen fungal species were recorded in association with L. camara including the previously undescribed species Phomopsis lantanae-glutinosae sp. nov. Five fungi are also newly recorded on this host in Brazil: Cercospora lantanicola Corynespora cassiicola Meliola ambigua Mycovellosiella lantaniphila and Phomopsis lantanae. The following fungi, previously recorded on L. camara in Brazil, are recorded here for the first time in Minas Gerais: Dendryphielia aspera Micropustulomyces mucilaginosus Mycovellosiella lantanae Pseudocercospora guianensis and Puccinia lantanae. 相似文献

This study compares how Lantana camara, an invasive species, and L. peduncularis, an autochthonous one, cope with drought in Galapagos. Soil surface temperature was the abiotic environmental parameter that
best explained variations in photosynthetic stress. Higher soil surface temperatures were recorded in the lowlands and in
rain-shadow areas, which were also the driest areas. L. peduncularis, with a shallow root system, behaved as a drought-tolerant species, showing lower relative growth rates, which decreased
with leaf water content and higher photosynthetic stress levels in the lowlands and in a northwest rain-shadow area in comparison
with higher and wetter locations. Its basal and maximal fluorescences decreased at lower altitudes, reflecting the recorded
drops in chlorophyll concentration. In contrast, L. camara with a deep root system behaved as a drought-avoiding species, showing leaf and relative water contents higher than 55% and
avoiding permanent damage to its photosynthetic apparatus even in the driest area where it showed very low chlorophyll content.
Its relative growth rate decreased more in dry areas in comparison to wetter zones than did that of L. peduncularis, even though it had greater water content. Furthermore, L. camara showed higher water contents, growth rate, and lower photosynthetic stress levels than L. peduncularis in the arid lowlands. Thus, L. peduncularis maintained lower maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (F
v/F
m) than L. camara even at sunrise, due to higher basal fluorescence values with similar maximal fluorescence, which indicated permanent damage
to PSII reaction centres. Our results help to explain the success and limitations of L. camara in the invasion of arid and sub-arid environments. 相似文献

The herringbone leaf-mining fly, Ophiomyiacamarae Spencer, is a promising candidateagent for the biological control of the alieninvasive weed Lantana camara L. in SouthAfrica. During extensive host-specificity testsinvolving 39 test plant species from 12families, survival to adulthood was restrictedto L. camara, L. trifolia, and fourspecies of the closely-related genus Lippia (Verbenaceae) in no-choice tests. However, survival of the immature stages wassignificantly lower on L. trifolia andthe four Lippia species than on L.camara. In addition, O. camaraedisplayed very strong oviposition preferencefor L. camara during paired-choice tests. This narrow laboratory host range suggests thatO. camarae will not pose any risks tonon-target verbenaceous plants if released inSouth Africa. Permission to release O. camaraeinto South Africa was approved by the regulatoryauthorities in 2001. 相似文献

A survey was conducted todetermine the present status of five biocontrolagents established on Lantana camara L.(Verbenaceae) in South Africa. Three ofthe five agents, Calycomyza lantanae(Frick), Ophiomyia lantanae Froggatt andTeleonemia scrupulosa Stål areestablished throughout the range of L.camara. The two hispine beetles, Octotomascabripennis Guérin-Ménevilleand Uroplata girardi Pic are restrictedto the warm, subtropical regions in the easternrange of the weed, and are unable to cope withthe plants becoming seasonally leafless in dryand temperate areas. The two beetles and T. scrupulosa are rated as the most damagingagents on L. camara. The impact of O. lantanae is uncertain, and due to lowpopulations, the impact of C. lantanae isnegligible. Insect populations typicallyaccumulate to maximise their impact on plantsby midsummer, giving plants the opportunity tocompensate for the cumulative agent damageaccrued at the end of the previous growingseason. A number of parasitoids were rearedfrom U. girardi, O. lantanae andC. lantanae, but only those adapted toC. lantanae are expected to significantlyreduce its field density. The agents feed anddevelop on a wide range of lantana varieties, and where two or more varieties co-exist,insects occurred in equal abundance on thedifferent varieties. The importance of varietalpreferences appears to have beenover-estimated, but needs consideration whennew candidates are evaluated. The impact ofthese biocontrol agents is insufficient toreduce L. camara to a manageablesituation, and additional candidates arenecessary to control this weed in South Africa. 相似文献

Decline in soil fertility accelerated by shorter fallow periods was expected to be a major constraint in slash-and-burn rice production systems in northern Laos. In this paper we describe relationships between fallow period, soil fertility parameters, weeds and rice yield. Soil infertility is not perceived a major yield constraint by the farmers. Of the various soil parameters observed only soil organic matter showed consistent association with rice yield (r=0.42, p<0.01). Fallow period and rice yield showed no association and the relationship between fallow and organic matter was very weak (r=0.16, p<0.01). Rice yield was negatively related to densities of Ageratum conyzoides and Lygodium flexuosum. Soil loss during the cropping period ranged from 300–29.300 kg ha–1. For the same period organic matter, total N, available P and available K content in the top 0–3 cm decreased by 11,12,17, and 17%, respectively, and loss of total N for the soil depth of 0–25 cm was estimated at 400 kg ha–1. Soil physical properties, moisture stress and available N are the most likely detriments to rice yields. Further attempts to relate soil properties to rice yield should include repeated measurements during the cropping season and observations on soil physical properties. The research presented was supported by the Provincial Agriculture Service, Luang Prabang, Laos, and the Swiss Development Cooperation. 相似文献

Gall induction by arthropods results in a range of morphological and physiological changes in their host plants. We examined changes in gas exchange, nutrients, and energetics related to the presence of stem galls on Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae) induced by the moth, Epiblema strenuana Walker (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). We compared the effects of galls on P. hysterophorus in the rosette (young), pre-flowering (mature), and flowering (old) stages. Gall induction reduced the leaf-water potential, especially in flowering stage plants. In young and mature stage plants, galling reduced photosynthetic rates considerably. Gall induction reduced the transpiration rate mostly in mature plants, and this also diminished stomatal conductance. Energy levels in most galls and in shoot tissue immediately below the galls were significantly higher than the energy levels in stem tissue immediately above the galls, indicating that the gall acts as a mobilizing sink for the moth. Galling had significant effects on concentrations of minerals such as boron, chloride, magnesium, and zinc. In galled plants, reduced leaf-water potential and reduced rates of photosynthesis, transpiration, and stomatal conductance may have altered mineral element levels. These observed effects demonstrate that E. strenuana has the potential to regulate P. hysterophorus. 相似文献

The ornamental hybrid shrub, Lantana camara L. (lantana), is a serious environmental weed and has been targeted for biological control in South Africa since 1961. The established biocontrol agents cause insufficient levels of damage and additional natural enemies are required to reduce the invasiveness of this weed. The lantana mirid, Falconia intermedia (Distant), is a promising new agent that was imported from the Caribbean for life history and host-range studies. The nymphs and adults are leaf-suckers that cause chlorotic speckling, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Biological studies indicate that F. intermedia has considerable biocontrol potential, in that it has a high intrinsic rate of increase, the potential for multiple generations a year, highly mobile adults, and a high level of damage per individual. Host-specificity trials indicated that the lantana mirid has a narrow host range, with L. camara being the most suitable host, but several indigenous African species in the closely related genus Lippia are suitable alternative host plants. Under multiple-choice conditions, adults showed a significant and strong oviposition preference for L. camara over the Lippia species. A risk assessment of potential nontarget effects indicated that three Lippia species could sustain damage levels in the field. The relatively low probability of damage to indigenous species was considered a justified trade-off for the potentially marked impact on L. camara. The regulatory authorities accepted the results of this study and F. intermedia was released against L. camara in South Africa in April 1999. 相似文献

Under glasshouse conditions Cajanus cajan plants grown in a dark red latosol were fertilized with soluble simple superphosphate and hardly soluble rock phosphate and inoculated with three VA mycorrhizal fungi (M1, Gigaspora margarita; M2, Scutellospora verrucosa; M3, Acaulospora rehmii) from the Cerrado ecosystem, Brazil. Only with rock phosphate plant growth was significantly increased by all fungi. Enhanced P uptake corresponded with higher yields and proved to be a characteristic of the VA myccorhizae. A definite relationship between infection intensity and efficiency of VA mycorrhizae was not detected. Spore production was generally more pronounced in the treatment with rock phosphate, especially with M1 and M2. Nodulation of Cajanus cajan was greatly improved by all fungi in the treatment with rock phosphate. It is suggested that the increased plant development and nodulation was due to improved uptake of P by mycorrhiza. 相似文献

The geographical variation in the composition of triacylglycerols in seeds of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], grown in Finland, was analyzed. The total lipid content of pine seeds was slightly higher in the northernmost provenance (68 °50N), whereas the lipid content of spruce seeds was not affected systematically by the geographical origin of the seeds. The species studied differed in the proportions of fatty acids in their triacylglycerols, though the three most abundant components were the same, i.e. oleic acid (181 n9), linoleic acid (182n-6) and 5,9,12-octadecatrienoic acid (183 5c9c12c). These fatty acids corresponded to more than 80 mol% of the total fatty acids. According to mass spectrometric analyses, the triacylglycerols of both spruce and pine seeds consisted of the same molecular species with 52–56 acyl carbons, but in different proportions. Molecules with 54 acyl carbons represented approximately 75% of the pine and 85% of the spruce triacylglycerols, with the most abundant molecular species being 545, 546 and 547. Some minor differences in the fatty acid composition of triacylglycerols of pine seeds from different seed collecting areas were found: the proportion of linoleic acid slightly increased whereas that of 5,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid decreased towards the northern origins. Similar differences were not found in the proportions of fatty acids in spruce seed lots. Furthermore, the proportions of triacylglycerols in both pine and spruce seeds from northern and southern collecting areas were not significantly different. The higher content of total lipids in spruce seeds compared with pine seeds may be due to the structure of the seed coat, and the lipophilic layers inside it, acting as a barrier to imbibition. 相似文献

A bundle of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) radiocarbon dated to 1210±70 uncal B.P. (830±90 cal A.D.) was analysed for its macrofossil content. Apart from stems, capsules and seeds of flax., a large number of diaspores (fruits and seeds) from other plants was identified. Field weeds were the most numerous taxa present, among them three flax field weeds,Spergula maxima, Camelina alyssum andCuscuta cpilinum. Development of the specific flax weed community is discussed. Indicator values are used to characterize the edaphic conditions of this early medieval flax field. The field weeds spectrum also suggests that this flax was sown as a summer crop after an earlier crop of millet. 相似文献

A rapid, one-step procedure has been developed for inducing direct organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis in cultures of Phaseolus coccineus L., P. acutifolius A., P. aureus L. [Vigna radiata L. Wilczek] and P. wrightii L. Development of somatic embryos and shoot buds occurred within 6–8 weeks of culture from intact seedlings raised on MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium supplemented with N6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Shoot buds or embryoids originated from subepidermal tissue of the regions adjacent to the shoot apex, hypocotyl and cotyledonary axils. While P. acutifolius and P. aureus were regenerated via shoot formation and P. wrightii by somatic embryogenesis, both embryogenesis and shoot regeneration were observed in P. coccineus. Relatively higher levels of BAP, 50–80 M, were found to be optimal for inducing regeneration while lower concentrations were ineffective. About 40–70 shoots and 70–250 somatic embryos were produced per responding seedling. Regenerated shoots and somatic embryos developed into whole plants on a basal medium or the one supplemented with 1 M naphthaleneacetic acid. 相似文献

The fatty-acid composition of C. roseus and N. tabacum cell suspension cultures was unaffected by subculture on Wood and Braun, Murashige and Skoog, or Gamborg B5C media. However, placing the cultures — which were normally grown at 25° C — at 15° C reduced growth but resulted in enhanced formation of oleic and linolenic acids in C. roseus cultures and increased levels of linoleic and linolenic acids in cultures of G. max and N. tabacum, respectively. The incorporation of [14C]acetate into [14C]linoleic acid was more rapid in N. tabacum cells than in G. max cells, but was very poor in C. roseus where the [14C] label was distributed mainly between palmitic and oleic acids. 相似文献

Growth, production, and demography of Moina micrura in brackish tropical fishponds (Layo,Ivory Coast) 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Sampling and experiments were performed in brackish fishponds, located near the Ebrie Lagoon, Ivory Coast. Moina developed here at salinities up to about 4 g l-1. Mean embryonic and juvenile development times in experimental conditions were 0.82 and 0.80 day, respectively, with 2 juvenile stages at 30 °C (salinity of 3 g l-1; 29 µg chlorophyll-a l-1) and 1.22 and 1.37, with 2 stages for most individuals and 3 or 4 stages for some of them at 26 °C (2 g l-1 and 36 µg l-1). The corresponding Q10 for embryonic development was relatively high (2.7). Growth rates in weight at 30 ° C were 2.11 and 1.37 µg µg-1 d-1, respectively, for the embryonic and juvenile stages, 0.21 for mean somatic growth of the five first female adult stages, and 1.00 for primipara, summed for somatic growth, production of eggs, and embryonic growth. Consequently, differences in growth rates between young and adults were small. M. micrura also was a high fecundity species according to its size, fecundity in nature varying from 2.2 to 7.7 eggs per adult female. Rates of population increase evaluated for some sequences of parthenogenetic growing periods, reached up to 0.9. Most of the daily P/B evaluated by the cumulative growth method reached values above 1.0 (28 to 31 °C), minima being about 0.7 for lower temperatures (approximatively 26 °C). Populations were also characterized by low juvenile to adult ratios (down to 0.9) and high daily birth rates (up to 1.2). Overall, M. micrura is a highly productive, opportunistic species, well adapted to the low salinities that occur during part of the year in the ponds.Biological and population characteristics of this species, and literature data on regulation mechanisms, possible use for aquaculture, and on size in tropical species are discussed. 相似文献

Summary The purpose of this paper was to determine if heavy metal tolerance was expressed in pollen and if its expression was correlated with the tolerance of the pollen source. Clones of Silene dioica, tolerant to zinc, closely related but nontolerant S. alba and clones of Mimulus guttatus tolerant and sensitive to copper were grown in the greenhouse in either standard potting soil or nutrient culture. Pollen was collected shortly after dehiscence, hydrated, and tested over a broad range of metal concentrations. The tolerance of the pollen source was determined by comparing root growth in solutions with and without heavy metals. In both Silene species and M. guttatus, the tolerance of the parental clone was expressed in its pollen. Pollen from tolerant individuals was able to germinate and grow at concentrations of metals which markedly inhibited pollen from nontolerants. 相似文献

The genotypic diversity of indigenous bacterial endophytes within stem of tropical maize (Zea mays L.) was determined in field and greenhouse experiments. Strains were isolated from stem tissues of a tropical maize cultivar (PEHM-1) by trituration and surface disinfestation and their population dynamics was determined. Endophytes were found in most of the growing season at populations ranging from 1.36–6.12 × 105 colony-forming units per gram fresh weight (c.f.u./gm fw) of stem. Analysis of these bacterial endophytes using Gas Chromatography—Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (GC-FAME) led to the identification of Bacillus pumilus, B. subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. fluorescens as the relatively more predominant group of bacterial species residing in maize stem. When the maize seedlings grown in a greenhouse were inoculated with these four isolates individually, their population densities decreased (1.6–3.1 × 105 c.f.u./gm fw of stem) as compared to the field-grown maize (1.8–3.8 × 105 c.f.u./gm fw of stem). The highest persistence, however, was recovered in the case of B. subtilis with a population density of 3.1 × 105 c.f.u./gm fw of stem tissue on 28 days after emergence (DAE). This is the first report on population dynamics of bacterial endophytes from tropical maize and the results establish that symptomless populations of bacteria exist in the maize stem. 相似文献

A cell-free system capable of converting [14C]geranylgeranyl diphosphate to ent-[14C]kaurene and to an unidentified acid-hydrolysable compound was obtained from the basal portions of 5-d-old shoots of wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.). By means of marker enzyme activities, the synthesis of ent-kaurene and the unknown compound could be quantitatively assigned to a plastid fraction obtained by Percoll-gradient centrifugation of the homogenate. The enzyme activities were located within the plastids, probably in the stroma, because they withstood trypsin treatment of the intact plastids, and the plastids had to be broken to release the activity, which was then obtained in soluble form. Plastid membranes had no activity. Plastid stroma preparations obtained from pea (Pisum sativum L.) shoot tips and pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.) endosperm also yielded ent-kaurene synthetase activity, but did not form the unknown compound. The exact nature of the active plastids was not ascertained, but the use of methods for proplastid isolation was essential for full activity, and the active tissues are all known to contain high proportions of proplastids, developing chloroplasts or leucoplasts. We therefore believe that ent-kaurene synthesis may be limited to these categories. Mature chloroplasts from the wheat leaves did not contain ent-kaurene synthetase activity and did not yield the unknown component. Incorporation of [14C]geranylgeranyl diphosphate into ent-[14C]kaurene and the unknown component was assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography with on-line radiocounting. ent-[14C]Kaurene was identified by Kovats retention index and full mass spectra obtained by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The unknown component was first believed to be copalyl diphosphate, because it yielded a compound on acid hydrolysis, which migrated like copalol on high-performance liquid chromatography and gave a mass spectrum very similar to that of authentic copalol. However, differences in the mass spectrum and in retention time on capillary gas chromatography excluded identity with copalol. Furthermore, the unhydrolysed compound was not converted to ent-kaurene by a cell-free system from C. maxima endosperm as copalyl diphosphate would have been.Abbreviations ADH

In flowers grown at warm temperatures in environmental chambers and at cooler temperatures in the greenhouse, eight parameters of the sperm-cell organization of Nicotiana tabacum were examined during sperm cell maturation using serial ultrathin sectioning, transmission electron microscopy and quantitative cytology. Despite employing the same seed source, and similar soil and nutrient conditions, the surface area and volume of the cell, the nucleus and the chondriome were larger in flowers grown in growth chambers under warmer controlled conditions, whereas the number of plastids appeared to be the same, or slightly higher, in flowers grown under cooler greenhouse conditions. These results suggest that environmental conditions may influence the quantity of cytoplasmic organelles, including mitochondria and plastids, thus potentially influencing the likelihood of male cytoplasmic inheritance. 相似文献

The effects of liming and inoculation with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus intraradices Schenck and Smith on the uptake of phosphate (P) by maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and on depletion of inorganic phosphate fractions in rhizosphere soil (Al-P, Fe-P, and Ca-P) were studied in flat plastic containers using two acid soils, an Oxisol and an Ultisol, from Indonesia. The bulk soil pH was adjusted in both soils to 4.7, 5.6, and 6.4 by liming with different amounts of CaCO3.In both soils, liming increased shoot dry weight, total root length, and mycorrhizal colonization of roots in the two plant species. Mycorrhizal inoculation significantly increased root dry weight in some cases, but much more markedly increased shoot dry weight and P concentration in shoot and roots, and also the calculated P uptake per unit root length. In the rhizosphere soil of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants, the depletion of Al-P, Fe-P, and Ca-P depended in some cases on the soil pH. At all pH levels, the extent of P depletion in the rhizosphere soil was greater in mycorrhizal than in non-mycorrhizal plants. Despite these quantitative differences in exploitation of soil P, mycorrhizal roots used the same inorganic P sources as non-mycorrhizal roots. These results do not suggest that mycorrhizal roots have specific properties for P solubilization. Rather, the efficient P uptake from soil solution by the roots determines the effectiveness of the use of the different soil P sources. The results indicate also that both liming and mycorrhizal colonization are important for enhancing P uptake and plant growth in tropical acid soils. 相似文献

Two intertidal snails, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi, 1972) (upper eulittoral fringe/maritime zone) and Littorina obtusata (Linnaeus, 1758) (lower eulittoral) were collected from a boulder shore on Nobska Point, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in July
and acclimated for 15–20 days at 4 ° or 21 °C. Oxygen consumption rate (Vo2) was determined for 11–15 subsamples of individuals at 4 °, 11 ° and 21 °C with silver/platinum oxygen electrodes. Multiple
factor analysis of variance (MFANOVA) of lo10 transformed values of whole animal Vo2 with log10 dry tissue weight (DTW) as a covariant revealed that increased test temperature induced a significant increase in Vo2 in both species (P<0.00001). In contrast, MFANOVA revealed that temperature acclimation did not affect Vo2 in either L. saxatilis (P= 0.35) or L. obtusata (P= 0.095). Thus, neither species displayed a capacity for the typical metabolic temperature compensation marked by an increase
in Vo2 at any one test temperature in individuals acclimated to a lower temperature that is characteristic of most ectothermic animals.
Lack of capacity for metabolic temperature acclimation has also been reported in other littorinid snail species, and may be
characteristic of the group as a whole. Lack of capacity for respiratory temperature acclimation in these two species and
other littorinids may reflect the extensive semi-diurnal temperature variation that they are exposed to in their eulittoral
and eulittoral fringe/maritime zone habitats. In these habitats, any metabolic benefits derived from longer-term temperature
compensation of metabolic rates are negated by extreme daily temperature fluctuations. Instead, littorinid species appear
to have evolved mechanisms for immediate metabolic regulation which, in L. saxatilis and L. obtusata and other littorinids, appear to centre on a unique ability for near instantaneous suppression of metabolic rate and entrance
into short-term metabolic diapause at temperatures above 20–35 °C, making typical seasonal respiratory compensation mechanisms
characteristic of most ectotherms of little adaptive value to littorinid species. 相似文献
