The allelopathic potential of Ageratum conyzoides, which is one of the most dominant weeds in upland-crop areas of Southeast Asia, was investigated under laboratory conditions. The residue obtained from an aqueous acetone extract of the plant shoots inhibited the germination and the growth of roots and shoots of Amaranthus caudatus, Digitaria sanguinalis and Lactuca sativa. The concentration-dependent responses of the test plants suggest that the residue of Ageratum conyzoides might contain allelochemical(s).  相似文献

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in southern India plays an important role in biodiversity conservation, especially of large mammals, by offering habitat contiguity of about 3300 km2 with three other protected areas in the region, namely Nagarahole and Bandipur National Parks and Wynaad Wildlife Sanctuary through forest corridors between the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats forests. The habitat linkage is crucial for large ranging animals such as elephants, which use these forest corridors for migration. Livestock grazing, a major biotic interference in forest corridors, originates from seven settlements of the Masinagudi group of villages on the eastern and the southeastern fringes of the sanctuary. Construction of a series of hydroelectric power stations, numbering about three at Singara, Marvakandy (Masinagudi) and Moyar, around the Masinagudi villages caused a rapid growth in human population (143% between 1961 and 1991), particularly the landless labourers and livestock. Free grazing by about 15 000–17 000 resident as well as migratory livestock every year in and around the forest corridors, coupled with removal of cattle dung from the forest floor, have adversely affected the forest regeneration and helped proliferation of weed species such as Lantana camara, Casia tora, C. occidentalis, Opuntia dillenii, and Ageratum conyzoides. The annual fodder production from the corridor forest could meet the demand of about two-thirds of the resident population, while the crop residues from the marginal agriculture could not support the remaining one-third livestock population. In view of such a situation, measures have been suggested to reduce livestock population and implement the ecodevelopment packages in order to ensure the corridor connectivity for the long-term conservation of the elephant population.  相似文献

The present study investigated the allelopathic interference of leaf debris of Ageratum conyzoides (billy goat weed; Asteraceae)—a weed of cultivated land—against rice (Oryza sativa). Seedling length and dry weight of rice were significantly reduced (16–20%) in soil from A. conyzoides infested fields compared to the soil from an area devoid of the weed. It indicated the presence of certain phytotoxins in the A. conyzoides infested soil. To explore the possible contribution of the weed in releasing these phytotoxins, growth studies involving leaf debris extracts and amended soils (prepared by incorporating leaf debris—5, 10, 20 g kg−1 soil, w/w, or its extracts—0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%, v/v) were conducted. The growth of rice was severely inhibited in A. conyzoides leaf debris- and debris extract-amended soils compared to unamended control soil. A significant amount of water-soluble phenolics, the potent phytotoxins, was found in the A. conyzoides infested soil, leaf debris, and debris-amended soils. These phenolics were identified as gallic acid, coumalic acid, protocatechuic acid, catechin and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Among these, protocatechuic acid was in the maximum amount (35.72%) followed by coumalic acid (33.49%) and these two accounted for >69% of total phenolic compounds. Further, there was a significant increase in the available nutrient content in soil amended with A. conyzoides leaf debris thus ruling out the possibility of any resource depletion upon residue incorporation and their negative role in causing growth reduction. Based on the observations, the present study concludes that leaf debris of A. conyzoides deleteriously affects the early growth of rice by releasing water-soluble phenolic acids into the soil environment and not through soil nutrient depletion.  相似文献

Abstract

Aqueous leaf extracts of four commonly growing weeds namely Ageratum conyzoides, Elephantopus scaber, Lantana camara and Xanthium strumarium were used to evaluate their nematicidal activity on second stage juvenile of Meloidogyne incognita race-3. The juveniles were exposed to various concentration of leaf extract namely 250, 500, 1000 and 2000?ppm for 12, 24 and 48?h, respectively. All leaf extracts showed the nematicidal property in concentration and time-dependent manner. The maximum juvenile mortality was recorded in E. scaber throughout the incubation period followed by X. strumarium, L. camara and A. conyzoides. The regression and correlation of regression revealed the best concentration-dependent effect of aqueous leaf extracts on nematode mortality in E. scaber (R2?=?.751) followed by X. strumarium (R2?=?.749), A. conyzoides (R2?=?.687) and L. camara (R2?=?.756). Aqueous leaves extracts of these aforementioned weeds showed nematicidal properties, therefore, may be used as a key component of integrated disease management programme.

Oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.:Fr.) Kumm. ITCC 3308 (collected from Indian Type Culture Collection, IARI, New Delhi, India, 110012) was grown on dry weed plants, Leonotis sp, Sida acuta, Parthenium argentatum, Ageratum conyzoides, Cassia sophera, Tephrosia purpurea and Lantana camara. Leonotis sp. was the best substrate in fruit body production of P. ostreatus when it was mixed with rice straw (1:1, wet wt/wet wt) for mushroom cultivation. The fruiting time for P. ostreatus was also less on Leonotis sp. than on any other weed substrates tested in the present investigation. T. purpurea was the least suited weed for oyster mushroom cultivation. The main problem of oyster mushroom cultivation on weed substrates was found to be low yield in the second flush that could be overcome by blending weed plants with rice straw. The protein contents of the fruit bodies obtained from Cassia sophera, Parthenium argentatum and Leonotis sp. were not only better than rice straw but also from the rice straw supplemented weeds.  相似文献

A very interesting survey was performed to measure the distribution of invasive Parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) weed in the University Campus, Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The University Campus comprised on; The University of Peshawar, Islamia College University, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan Forest Institute and the New Developmental Research Farm. In these selected areas Parthenium weed distribution was measured in particular the academic, residential and research farm. Moreover, the survey also investigated the impact of parthenium weed upon native weeds flora inside the University campus. A 1m2 quadrat was used to collect the data. During the survey, a total of 32 weeds species were recorded belonging to 18 different families and 32 genera, the life cycle of 23 weeds were annual while 9 weeds have a perennial. The data were recorded on absolute density (%), relative density (%), absolute frequency (%), relative frequency (%) and importance values (%) of parthenium weed and others flora. The collected data show that parthenium weed was the most dominant species having 76.8 m?2 plants density in the NDF and (32.0 m?2) at Islamia College University. However, the highest frequency (100%) of Parthenium was observed for The University of Agriculture, while minimum (80%) occurred in the Agronomy field. A More, the relative frequency of Parthenium was maximum (25%) in Islamia College; whereas, it's minimum (12.9%) at Agronomy field. Finally, the Importance Value of Parthenium indicates the highest (45.98%) at Dairy Farm followed by (40.33%) at the Horticulture field's area. In short, the Parthenium weed becomes more problematic and replaces all the native flora in the non-crop area specially Dicanthium annulatum L. a native grass species on the ridges of the field being replaced by parthenium. Due to no proper management and high growth rate, nowadays it becomes like a superweed in the KPK and especially in Pakistan. So, the management of Parthenium weed requires the call attention from the Govt. policymaker and proper quarantine inspection to conserve the native flora and field crops to get maximum crop yield.  相似文献

Survey was carried out on occurrence of peanut bud necrosis disease (PBND) in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (AP) the major groundnut growing states in South India. PBND incidence was observed on crops, viz., greengram, blackgram, tomato, watermelon, cowpea, chilli, cucumber and sesame besides groundnut. The PBND incidence was higher in rainy season crops than in post-rainy season. Its proportion varied from place to place, and it was high in the vegetable and pulses growing areas. The weed plant species Achyranthus aspera, Acalypha indica, Alysicarpus rugosus, A. longifolia, Commelina bengalensis, Commelina jacobi, Corchorus trilocularis, Cyanoptis cuculetta, Eclipta alba, Euphorbia geniculata, Lochnera pusilla, Physalis minima and Sesbania rostrata were recorded for the first time as alternate hosts of PBND. Infection was also noticed for the first time on cucumber, muskmelon and sesame crops. Five weed species, viz., Achyranthus aspera, Ageratum conyzoides, Alysicarpus rugosus, Commelina bengalensis and Vigna trilobata were found abundant in AP and Karnataka. More infection was observed on Ageratum conyzoides (17.56%) compared with other weeds.  相似文献

The biology and host range of the cerambycid beetle Aerenicopsis championi Bates, a potential biological control agent for the weed Lantana camara L., were studied. A. championi is a univoltine species associated with L. camara, L. urticifolia, and L. hirsuta in Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, adult emergence occurred in May and June at the start of the rainy season. Larvae fed within the stems over a 9- to 12-month period and caused damage to the plant. The insect was imported into Australia, where a procedure for rearing it in the laboratory was developed. Host-range tests indicated that adults oviposited and larvae commenced development in L. camara and L. montevidensis but not in any of 57 other species tested. A CLIMEX model indicated that most areas infested with lantana in Australia would have a favorable climate for A. championi. Permission to release this insect in Australia was obtained and three small releases were made in southern Queensland in February 1995.  相似文献

A survey was conducted todetermine the present status of five biocontrolagents established on Lantana camara L.(Verbenaceae) in South Africa. Three ofthe five agents, Calycomyza lantanae(Frick), Ophiomyia lantanae Froggatt andTeleonemia scrupulosa Stål areestablished throughout the range of L.camara. The two hispine beetles, Octotomascabripennis Guérin-Ménevilleand Uroplata girardi Pic are restrictedto the warm, subtropical regions in the easternrange of the weed, and are unable to cope withthe plants becoming seasonally leafless in dryand temperate areas. The two beetles and T. scrupulosa are rated as the most damagingagents on L. camara. The impact of O. lantanae is uncertain, and due to lowpopulations, the impact of C. lantanae isnegligible. Insect populations typicallyaccumulate to maximise their impact on plantsby midsummer, giving plants the opportunity tocompensate for the cumulative agent damageaccrued at the end of the previous growingseason. A number of parasitoids were rearedfrom U. girardi, O. lantanae andC. lantanae, but only those adapted toC. lantanae are expected to significantlyreduce its field density. The agents feed anddevelop on a wide range of lantana varieties, and where two or more varieties co-exist,insects occurred in equal abundance on thedifferent varieties. The importance of varietalpreferences appears to have beenover-estimated, but needs consideration whennew candidates are evaluated. The impact ofthese biocontrol agents is insufficient toreduce L. camara to a manageablesituation, and additional candidates arenecessary to control this weed in South Africa.  相似文献

In the past century, our understanding of the processes driving plant invasion and its consequences for natural and anthropogenic systems has increased considerably. However, the management of invasive plants remains a challenge despite ever more resources being allocated to their removal. Often invasive plants targeted for ‘eradication’ are well‐established, have multiple modes of reproduction, long‐term seed banks, and strong associations with native and non‐native mutualists that ensure dispersal and facilitate spread. The pantropical weed, Lantana camara (Lantana), is one of the most invasive woody plants globally. We illustrate that, for Lantana, eradication is an unrealistic management goal given the short‐term removal approaches, irrespective of the effectiveness of removal methods. We assessed the role of dispersal by avian frugivores in the recolonization of managed areas by Lantana in the seasonally dry, tropical forests of northern and southern India. We estimated the distribution of Lantana, its dispersal potential and the proximity between managed areas and source populations. We found that Lantana was dispersed by many generalist frugivorous birds and that most managed areas were well within the median dispersal distance from source plants facilitating rapid recolonization of managed areas. We conclude that given the difficulty of eradicating long‐established invasive plants, management practices should entail long‐term monitoring and control in priority areas for as long as Lantana occurs in the landscape.  相似文献

The essential oil composition of Lantana camara, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eriocephalus africanus was analyzed by means of GC and GC–MS and bioassayed in order to determine their activity against Amaranthus hybridus and Portulaca oleracea. E. camaldulensis essential oil, with spathulenol as the main compound, was the most effective, completely inhibiting germination and seedling growth on both weeds. The essential oil of E. africanus, rich in artemisia ketone, showed activity similar to that of E. camaldulensis on A. hybridus, but it was not so effective against P. oleracea, and L. camara essential oil, with high percentages in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, also showed higher phytotoxic activity against A. hybridus, inhibiting its germination and seedling length; however, it showed no effect against P. oleracea germination, whereas was effective in significantly reducing its seedling growth at all concentrations assayed. The results suggest the possible use of these essential oils as natural herbicides.  相似文献

As conservation reserves expand, the likelihood that they will capture areas degraded by previous land use increases. Ecological restoration of such areas will therefore play an increasing role in biodiversity conservation. On the New South Wales North Coast, recent expansion in the conservation estate has captured over 300 softwood and hardwood plantations, many with understoreys dominated by exotic weeds. Here we present an overview of the practices we have adopted in managing flooded gum (Eucalyptus grandis) plantations infested with lantana (Lantana camara) to enhance their biodiversity value. Experiments designed to overcome barriers limiting regeneration of native forest in conjunction with measurement of soil and plant responses yielded insights into the management of former timber plantations for biodiversity. Canonical Correspondence Analysis indicated that the level of canopy retention (or logging intensity) within sites consistently explained the greatest amount of variation in plant community composition (32–38% post-treatment). Thinning and burning stimulated regeneration of native species. Retained canopy cover was proportional to the richness or abundance of native woody shrubs, understorey trees and native perennial herbs, indicating that management intensity can be varied to promote a range of conservation values. A state-and-transition model summarising purported management actions and likely outcomes for these plantations is presented. This is the first time plantations have been managed solely for biodiversity. Logging income means that plantation restoration can be cost-neutral, and the positive influence of a cover crop of trees means that plantation management may generally be manipulated to promote biodiversity conservation.  相似文献

This study compares how Lantana camara, an invasive species, and L. peduncularis, an autochthonous one, cope with drought in Galapagos. Soil surface temperature was the abiotic environmental parameter that best explained variations in photosynthetic stress. Higher soil surface temperatures were recorded in the lowlands and in rain-shadow areas, which were also the driest areas. L. peduncularis, with a shallow root system, behaved as a drought-tolerant species, showing lower relative growth rates, which decreased with leaf water content and higher photosynthetic stress levels in the lowlands and in a northwest rain-shadow area in comparison with higher and wetter locations. Its basal and maximal fluorescences decreased at lower altitudes, reflecting the recorded drops in chlorophyll concentration. In contrast, L. camara with a deep root system behaved as a drought-avoiding species, showing leaf and relative water contents higher than 55% and avoiding permanent damage to its photosynthetic apparatus even in the driest area where it showed very low chlorophyll content. Its relative growth rate decreased more in dry areas in comparison to wetter zones than did that of L. peduncularis, even though it had greater water content. Furthermore, L. camara showed higher water contents, growth rate, and lower photosynthetic stress levels than L. peduncularis in the arid lowlands. Thus, L. peduncularis maintained lower maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (F v/F m) than L. camara even at sunrise, due to higher basal fluorescence values with similar maximal fluorescence, which indicated permanent damage to PSII reaction centres. Our results help to explain the success and limitations of L. camara in the invasion of arid and sub-arid environments.  相似文献

Plants sustain several ecosystem functions thereby playing a crucial role in conservation management. Lantana camara an invasive weed has become the common part of a bushes. The mutualistic relationship between this weed plant and butterflies are well known. Butterflies depend on Lantana camara for food, oviposition site, larval development etc. In this context we are highlighting the role of this invasive weed for butterfly conservation and maintaining total butterfly abundance. In this study the species richness highest for the site where the bushes were dominated by Lantana camara and lowest for the site where LCA abundance was low. The butterfly abundance and LCA abundance maintain a strong positive relationship and LCA abundance, species richness and and butterfly abundance are strongly correlated and dominance is negatively correlated with other three variables. So we can use the Lantana camara as a model organism for conservation and maintaining the butterfly abundance in Purulia, West Bengal, India.  相似文献

The herringbone leaf-mining fly, Ophiomyiacamarae Spencer, is a promising candidateagent for the biological control of the alieninvasive weed Lantana camara L. in SouthAfrica. During extensive host-specificity testsinvolving 39 test plant species from 12families, survival to adulthood was restrictedto L. camara, L. trifolia, and fourspecies of the closely-related genus Lippia (Verbenaceae) in no-choice tests. However, survival of the immature stages wassignificantly lower on L. trifolia andthe four Lippia species than on L.camara. In addition, O. camaraedisplayed very strong oviposition preferencefor L. camara during paired-choice tests. This narrow laboratory host range suggests thatO. camarae will not pose any risks tonon-target verbenaceous plants if released inSouth Africa. Permission to release O. camaraeinto South Africa was approved by the regulatoryauthorities in 2001.  相似文献

The ornamental hybrid shrub, Lantana camara L. (lantana), is a serious environmental weed and has been targeted for biological control in South Africa since 1961. The established biocontrol agents cause insufficient levels of damage and additional natural enemies are required to reduce the invasiveness of this weed. The lantana mirid, Falconia intermedia (Distant), is a promising new agent that was imported from the Caribbean for life history and host-range studies. The nymphs and adults are leaf-suckers that cause chlorotic speckling, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Biological studies indicate that F. intermedia has considerable biocontrol potential, in that it has a high intrinsic rate of increase, the potential for multiple generations a year, highly mobile adults, and a high level of damage per individual. Host-specificity trials indicated that the lantana mirid has a narrow host range, with L. camara being the most suitable host, but several indigenous African species in the closely related genus Lippia are suitable alternative host plants. Under multiple-choice conditions, adults showed a significant and strong oviposition preference for L. camara over the Lippia species. A risk assessment of potential nontarget effects indicated that three Lippia species could sustain damage levels in the field. The relatively low probability of damage to indigenous species was considered a justified trade-off for the potentially marked impact on L. camara. The regulatory authorities accepted the results of this study and F. intermedia was released against L. camara in South Africa in April 1999.  相似文献

Aconophora compressa (Hemiptera: Membracidae), a biological control agent introduced against the weed Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) in Australia, has since been observed on several non-target plant species, including native mangrove Avicennia marina (Acanthaceae). In this study we evaluated the suitability of two native mangroves, A. marina and Aegiceras corniculatum (Myrsinaceae), for the survival and development of A. compressa through no-choice field cage studies. The longevity of females was significantly higher on L. camara (57.7 ± 3.8 days) than on A. marina (43.3 ± 3.3 days) and A. corniculatum (45.7 ± 3.8 days). The proportion of females laying eggs was highest on L. camara (72%) followed by A. marina (36%) and A. corniculatum (17%). More egg batches per female were laid on L. camara than on A. marina and A. corniculatum. Though more nymphs per shoot emerged on L. camara (29.9 ± 2.8) than on A. marina (13 ± 4.8) and A. corniculatum (10 ± 5.3), the number of nymphs that developed through to adults was not significantly different. The duration of nymphal development was longer on A. marina (67 ± 5.8 days) than on L. camara (48 ± 4 days) and A. corniculatum (43 ± 4.6 days). The results, which are in contrast to those from previous glasshouse and quarantine trials, provide evidence that A. compressa adults can survive, lay eggs and complete nymphal development on the two non-target native mangroves in the field under no-choice condition.  相似文献

Parthenium hysterophorus L. an exotic, pernicious weed is considered as one of the most troublesome weeds for agricultural sector by virtue of its high ecological amplitude and adaptability. Microbes and their by-products are now proved to be a worthy alternative to toxic chemicals used for weed management. Alternaria macrospora MKPI was isolated from the parthenium leaves infected with leaf blight and found pathogenic to the weed. The herbicidal potential of cell free culture filtrate of A. macrospora MKP1 has been tested against parthenium by employing detached leaf bioassay and seed germination bioassay and a significant damage was exhibited by the cultural filtrate of pathogen to the parthenium leaves and seeds.  相似文献
