The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on the distribution of macroinvertebrate taxa in different sized lowland Lithuanian rivers. A secondary aim was to assess ecological river quality and to determine the most suitable biotic index. A final aim was to determine the most appropriate macroinvertebrate families for river quality assessment in Lithuania. Species composition and quantitative characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrate communities have been investigated using standard kick-sampling method by a standard hand net in 24 different river sites in spring. Physical and chemical environmental parameters were measured in the same study site as the macroinvertebrate sampling. A total of 186 taxa representing 66 families or higher taxonomic ranks of benthic macroinvertebrates have been identified. Water temperature and current velocity influenced the highest number of ivestigated families. Seven of the most tolerant and eleven of the most sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa for hydrochemical parameters related with organic pollution were determined. The DSFI method was founded to be the best index for assessment of ecological status for Lithuanian rivers until more accurate estimation method will be created.  相似文献

Several habitats of a Mediterranean pond were sampled for macroinvertebrates using different techniques: quantitative methods, semiquantitative hand-net sweep sampling and a qualitative protocol based on hand-net sweeps with fixed counts of individuals. The taxonomic composition was analyzed by DCA and several indices based on taxon composition or percentage of individuals were calculated. The aim of the study was to compare the results provided by these techniques and, in particular, to check if the qualitative approach could be an appropriate low-cost methodology for use in biomonitoring. The results provided by the three sampling methods in relation to submerged macrophytes were very similar. In soft sediment, certain differences were found between the quantitative and semiquantitative techniques. The qualitative protocol applied to single habitats collected fewer taxa than the corresponding quantitative or semiquantitative techniques. However, the overall protocol, consisting of samples from three habitats, provided higher richness values than all the quantitative and semiquantitative methods together, with 59 taxa out of the 70 collected during the study. It is concluded that this qualitative methodology performed reasonably well since it offers a reliable view of the community and it misses few taxa. Moreover, it is not so time consuming as other techniques and can be applied in a variety of habitats. It, therefore, seems to be an efficient method for bioassessment of the macroinvertebrate communities of ponds or the littoral zone of lakes.

There is still no assessment of the impact of sediment chemicals and environmental conditions on macroinvertebrates at the scale of the St. Lawrence River. In order to assess these impacts in the fluvial section of the St. Lawrence River including the Montreal harbour, the community structure of macroinvertebrates using different taxonomic aggregations (genus and family) and taxa attributes (abundance, presence–absence, indicator taxa) was assessed. The goal of the study was to determine the indicator taxa of macroinvertebrates along the fluvial continuum and relate changes in macroinvertebrate community to sediment chemical conditions and environmental characteristics of habitats using variance partitioning. This study also evaluated which taxonomic level and taxa attributes of macroinvertebrates were the most suitable for bioassessment of quality of sediments and habitat environment in the St. Lawrence River. Four different macroinvertebrate assemblages were found distributed along the fluvial continuum using either abundance or presence–absence data and genus or family levels. Indicator taxa characteristic of the different macroinvertebrate communities were associated with the sediment contamination gradient. However, habitat environmental characteristics (water masses, sulphur and DOC in sediments) had more influence on macroinvertebrate assemblages than sediment contamination. Our study confirms that family level analysis can give information comparable to the genus level analysis using presence–absence or abundance of macroinvertebrates, yet a higher number of indicator taxa were detected at the genus level.  相似文献

The ecological responses of aquatic macrophytes and benthic macroinvertebrates to deep-release dams in three impounded rivers of the Henares River Basin (Central Spain) were studied, specially focusing on the effects of nutrient enrichment caused by deep releases on these two freshwater communities. Three sampling sites, one upstream and two downstream from the reservoir, were established in each impounded river. Sampling surveys to collect submersed macrophytes and benthic macroinvertebrates at each sampling site were carried out in spring–summer of 2009 and 2011. Water temperature tended to decrease downstream from dams, whereas nitrate and phosphate concentrations tended to increase. These abiotic changes, particularly the downstream nutrient enrichment, apparently affected the macrophyte and macroinvertebrate communities. In the case of submersed macrophytes, total coverage and taxa richness increased downstream from dams. In the case of benthic macroinvertebrates, total density and total biomass also increased downstream, but taxa richness tended to decrease. Scrapers appeared to be the macroinvertebrate feeding group most favored downstream from dams as a probable consequence of the positive effect of nutrient enrichment on periphyton and perilithon abundance. Nutrients would ultimately come from water runoff over agricultural lands and over semi-natural forests and pastures, being subsequently accumulated in the hypolimnion of reservoirs.  相似文献

Aims

The aim of this study was to analyze the composition and spatio-temporal variation of soil macroinvertebrate communities in the northern Hengduanshan Mountains, Southwest China.

Methods

The soil macroinvertebrates were investigated in April, August and November of 2008 in two deciduous broad-leaved forests: secondary shrub forest (SSF) and Betula albosinensis forest (BSF), two coniferous forests: Picea asperata plantation (PAP) and Abies fabri and Larix kaempferi mixed forest (ALF), a coniferous (A. fabri) and broad leaf (B. albosinensis) mixed forest (ABF) and a subalpine meadow (SM) at elevations of 2659 to 3845 m.

Results

The soil macroinvertebrate community showed typical zonal characteristics compared with other localities in China. It comprised at least 113 taxa and was dominated by Insects (43.33%, mainly Coleoptera and Diptera), followed by Diplopoda (16.37%), Malacostraca (14.31%), Oligochaeta (12.71%) and Chilopoda (6.67%). Abundances of each taxa showed clear differences among habitats. Community abundance ranged from 71.56 individuals/m2 in the PAP to 148.00 individuals/m2 in the SM. The composition and structure of the soil macroinvertebrate communities varied among the six habitats and changed with the sampling periods. The richness, abundance and Shannon index of soil macroinvertebrate communities were significantly different among habitats, but not between sampling periods. Significant temporal responses in abundance were recorded in the SSF and BSF and the Shannon index for the SM. Further analysis showed that the abundance of the seven taxonomic groups also differed significantly among habitats, but that sampling period only had significant effects on a few taxonomic groups. Patterns of temporal variation in abundance differed among the seven taxonomic groups, even when the same taxa also differed markedly among habitat types. On the whole, these temporal variations in abundance on community and taxa group levels were greater in the SSF and BSF than in the PAP, ABF, ALF and the SM. However, the habitat had a stronger effect on soil macroinvertebrates than the sampling period. Moreover, a significant correlation was found between the abundance, richness and Shannon index of soil macroinvertebrate community and plant species richness, but not with soil properties or elevation. Additionally, more taxonomic groups were significantly influenced by the litter mass and plant coverage, but few with soil properties.

Conclusions

Plant community was the main environmental determinant influencing macroinvertebrate distribution in ecosystem of the northern Hengduanshan Mountains and presented a greater effect on the soil macroinvertebrates than soil properties or elevation. The temporal effects on soil macroinvertebrates were stronger in the deciduous broad-leaved forests than in the coniferous forests.  相似文献

Spawning salmon create patches of disturbance through redd digging which can reduce macroinvertebrate abundance and biomass in spawning habitat. We asked whether displaced invertebrates use non-spawning habitats as refugia in streams. Our study explored how the spatial and temporal distribution of macroinvertebrates changed during a pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) spawning run and compared macroinvertebrates in spawning (riffle) and non-spawning (refugia) habitats in an Alaskan stream. Potential refugia included: pools, stream margins and the hyporheic zone, and we also sampled invertebrate drift. We predicted that macroinvertebrates would decline in riffles and increase in drift and refugia habitats during salmon spawning. We observed a reduction in the density, biomass and taxonomic richness of macroinvertebrates in riffles during spawning. There was no change in pool and margin invertebrate communities, except insect biomass declined in pools during the spawning period. Macroinvertebrate density was greater in the hyporheic zone and macroinvertebrate density and richness increased in the drift during spawning. We observed significant invertebrate declines within spawning habitat; however in non-spawning habitat, there were less pronounced changes in invertebrate density and richness. The results observed may be due to spawning-related disturbances, insect phenology, or other variables. We propose that certain in-stream habitats could be important for the persistence of macroinvertebrates during salmon spawning in a Southeast Alaskan stream.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a pilot study on the macroinvertebrate communities occurring in a fast-flowing river in Northern Spain. The objective was to devise a sampling strategy for use on a series of Basque rivers included in a site classification study. Two contrasted sites were chosen for the pilot-study on the River Lea (Bizkaia), at the headwaters and near the mouth. Taxon richness and distribution across the river was examined using two sampling techniques at each site. It was concluded that, ideally, timed sampling units should be collected at intervals across a river transect in order to acquire a representative list of taxa. In addition, adequate sampling in marginal areas was stressed because a number of taxa appeared to be exclusive to marginal areas. Sampling location and total sampling effort were also shown to be a major consideration when taxon lists were acquired for the application of routine biological surveillance techniques.  相似文献

Dreissenid mussels (the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha and the quagga mussel Dreissena bugensis ) have invaded lakes and rivers throughout North America and Europe, where they have been linked to dramatic changes in benthic invertebrate community diversity and abundance. Through a meta-analysis of published data from 47 sites, we developed statistical models of Dreissena impact on benthic macroinvertebrates across a broad range of habitats and environmental conditions. The introduction of Dreissena was generally associated with increased benthic macroinvertebrate density and taxonomic richness, and with decreased community evenness (of taxa excluding Dreissena ). However, the strength of these effects varied with sediment particle size across sites. The effects of Dreissena differed among taxonomic and functional groups of macroinvertebrates, with positive effects on the densities of scrapers and predators, particularly leeches (Hirudinea), flatworms (Turbellaria), and mayflies (Ephemeroptera). Gastropod densities increased in the presence of Dreissena , but large-bodied snail taxa tended to decline. Dreissena was associated with declines in the densities sphaeriid clams and other large filter-feeding taxa, as well as burrowing amphipods ( Diporeia spp.), but had strong positive effects on gammarid amphipods. These patterns are robust to variation in the methodology of primary studies. The effects of Dreissena are remarkably concordant with those of ecologically similar species, suggesting universality in the interactions between introduced byssally attached mussels and other macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

The physical structure of two riffles in a lowland Danish stream was studied and its importance for the composition and density of the macroinvertebrate communities was evaluated. The two riffles were visually assessed to be very similar, but measurements revealed that they differed in overall hydraulic conditions, stability, substratum composition and consolidation. Differences affected abundance of both burrowing and surface dwelling macroinvertebrates. The unstable unconsolidated riffle had higher total macroinvertebrate abundance (4137 m−2 vs. 1698 m−2), diptera abundance (2329 m−2 vs. 386 m−2) and total estimated species richness (31.7 vs. 28.8) as well as lower evenness (0.77 vs. 0.83) than the compact riffle. Among samples within the unconsolidated riffle, variations in macroinvertebrate communities were related to differences in mean substratum particle size. Here a linear log–log relationship existed between macroinvertebrate abundance, the abundance of EPT taxa and the median particle size (r 2 total = 0.46, p = 0.002; r 2 EPT = 0.73, p < 0.001). No similar relationships were evident on the consolidated riffle. Moreover, macroinvertebrate communities on the unconsolidated riffle were dominated by species with a high colonising potential. Despite being assessed to the same morphological unit, physical variation between riffles was surprisingly high as the riffles differed substantially with respect to consolidation, substratum heterogeneity and overall hydraulic structure. Macroinvertebrate community structure and composition also differed between riffles despite being drawn from the same species pool. The findings address the question if we use the correct methods and parameters when assessing the macroinvertebrate communities at the scale of the morphological unit.  相似文献

Bioassessment of running waters should ideally be optimized to include sampling of the biota when and where they are most sensitive to anthropogenic disturbances, but direct comparisons of the responses of biota across habitats and seasons are lacking. We sampled benthic macroinvertebrates from nine boreal streams situated along an agricultural land use gradient in two seasons (spring and autumn) and two habitats (pools and riffles). Univariate (e.g., diversity) and multivariate (ordination scores) metrics, as well as biological traits, were used to assess changes in assemblage composition associated with agricultural land use. Abundances were generally higher in agricultural compared to forested streams, and in riffles compared to pools. Spring samples had lower mean abundances of several insect taxa (e.g., chironomid midges) compared to autumn samples, while abundances of non-insects (e.g., oligochaetes and Pisidium spp.) remained unchanged. Community turnover (correspondence analysis) had higher precision and sensitivity compared to diversity metrics, and samples from the spring and from riffles responded more to the land use gradient than those from autumn and pool habitats, respectively. The finding that catchment land use resulted in macrohabitat differences and, ultimately, differences in taxonomic composition between agricultural and forested streams and between pool and riffle habitats can be used to optimize future bioassessment based on macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

In southern Finland, most of the rivers are turbid and suffer from eutrophication and leaching of suspended solids from diffuse sources. We first related benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate structure to environmental factors using direct ordination. Second, benthic diatoms and macroinvertebrates were simultaneously sampled in several South-Finnish rivers and streams to compare two monitoring methods. The study sites constituted of some large, moderately nutrient rich rivers and some smaller, less eutrophic streams situated on the south coast of Finland. Diatom species distribution was most affected by conductivity, total P and latitude. Species distribution of macroinvertebrates was mostly related to channel width, conductivity and pH. For diatoms, separation of community structure between sampling stations was clear, but corresponding macroinvertebrate communities were more similar to each other. Correlation between diatom and macroinvertebrate pollution indices was rather low and insignificant (r = 0.28). As a whole, variation of macroinvertebrate index values (CV = 4.7%) among replicate samples was slightly lower than for diatom index (CV = 6.0%). On the contrary, community similarity between the replicate samples was slightly lower among macroinvertebrates (r = 0.770) due probably to their larger local scale spatial variation, sampling of more habitats and lower density compared to diatoms (r = 0.874). In conclusion, multiple pressures affecting the river ecosystems at different spatial and temporal scales should lead to choosing more than one biological monitoring method with clearly identifiable responses.  相似文献

Invasive bivalves often act as ecosystem engineers, generally causing physical alterations in the ecosystems in which they establish themselves. However, the effects of these physical alterations over benthic macroinvertebrate communities’ structure are less clear. The objective of this study was to characterize the ecological effects of the invasive bivalves Corbicula fluminea and Limnoperna fortunei on the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in neo-tropical reservoirs. Three hypotheses were tested: (1) invasive bivalves act as facilitator species to other benthic macroinvertebrates, resulting in communities with higher number of species, abundance and diversity; (2) invasive bivalves change the taxonomic composition of benthic macroinvertebrate communities; (3) invasive bivalves increase the complexity of benthic macroinvertebrate communities. For that it was used data from 160 sampling sites from four reservoirs. We sampled sites once in each area, during the dry season from 2009 to 2012. The first hypothesis was rejected, as the presence of invasive bivalves significantly decreased the host benthic communities’ number of species and abundance. The second hypothesis was corroborated, as the composition of other benthic macroinvertebrates was shown to be significantly different between sites with and without invasive bivalves. We observed a shift from communities dominated by common soft substrate taxa, such as Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, to communities dominated by the invasive Gastropoda Melanoides tuberculata. The biomass data corroborated that, showing significantly higher biomass of M. tuberculata in sites with invasive bivalves, but significantly lower biomass of native species. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities presenting invasive bivalves showed significantly higher eco-exergy and specific eco-exergy, which corroborate the third hypothesis. These results suggest that while the presence of invasive bivalves limits the abundance of soft bottom taxa such as Chironomidae and Oligochaeta, it enhances benthic communities’ complexity and provide new energetic pathways to benthic communities in reservoirs. This study also suggests a scenario of invasion meltdown, as M. tuberculata was facilitated by the invasive bivalves.  相似文献

This study assessed benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton and its responses to managed river-flows, in riffles downstream of three dams on the Cotter River, Australian Capital Territory. Benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton were also assessed in adjacent tributaries of the river, as well as in a nearby unregulated river and its tributaries. Food sources of four macroinvertebrate taxa (Leptophlebiidae, Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Orthocladiinae) were determined by stable isotope analysis of the invertebrates and their potential food, in conjunction with examination of the gut contents of individual invertebrates. Components of benthic periphyton were the main food source for the selected taxa. Orthocladiinae consumed primarily amorphous detritus, while Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Leptophlebiidae consumed diatoms. Enclosed benthic chambers were used to measure the response of benthic metabolism to monthly flow spikes released from one of the dams. The balance of benthic metabolism as measured by the Production/Respiration ratio (P/R) showed a shift towards production after the release of flow spikes. At sites downstream of the dams, there was more periphyton chlorophyll-a in the form of filamentous green algae than at sites in the unregulated river and the tributaries, and macroinvertebrate taxa using periphyton as a food resource were missing or reduced in abundance relative to sites without dams. However, the site downstream of the dam with environmental flow releases had more macroinvertebrate taxa and less periphyton cholorophyll-a content than sites downstream of dams without managed environmental flows, suggesting that a more suitable food supply resulting from environmental flow releases shifted macroinvertebrate communities towards those of unregulated streams.  相似文献

A field study was designed to concurrently evaluate differences in colonization by benthic macroinvertebrates on a range of artificial substratum types (single particles of natural rock or clay brick and baskets of natural substratum) after three colonization periods (1, 8 and 29 days). Fauna on the artificial substrata were compared to natural substratum and the effect of natural epilithic cover on colonization by zoobenthos was determined. Densities of total number of organisms and the seven most abundant taxa, total number of taxa and quantity of organic material were greater on the natural substratum than on the artificial substratum types. Relative abundances of taxa on pairs of the artificial substratum types, unlike pairs of each artificial substratum type and the natural substratum, were statistically correlated. Among the artificial substratum types densities of total number of organisms and about one-half of the most abundant taxa, total number of taxa and quantity of organic material were greatest in the substratum baskets. Natural epilithic cover on the single rock particles and substratum baskets affected the densities of total number of organisms and two of the seven most abundant taxa. These taxonomic groups were at approximately two to six-fold greater densities on the substrata with fine sediment. consistent patterns in densities of the zoobenthos on the substrata were found after each colonization period. In our study all measures of the macroinvertebrate assemblages (densities of each taxon, total number of organisms, total number of taxa and relative abundances of taxa), with few exceptions, were different between each artificial substratum type and natural substratum. This result showed the abundance and composition of the macroinvertebrate fauna on artificial substratum types were different from the natural substratum. Therefore, the choice of using artificial substrata instead of direct sampling of the natural substratum should be carefully made. Among the artificial substratum types relative abundances of taxa were similar on the single substratum particles and substratum baskets indicating single particles instead of baskets might be used to sample the zoobenthos. Investigators should consider the potential effect of the natural epilithic cover of substratum particles on colonization by zoobenthos when choosing the type of artificial substratum.  相似文献

The influence of sampling technique on the characterization of benthic macroinvertebrate communities on boulder-cobble substrate in two shallow freshwater ponds was analysed. Sweep-net and rock-bag sampling techniques were used to collect macroinvertebrates from two ponds in Newfoundland, Canada. Abundance and diversity of macroinvertebrates were compared in relation to the nature of the substrate and the technique. The two sampling techniques provided different estimates of diversity and density of the benthos. Neither method truly represented the benthic community as neither collected all taxa and each method typically over- or under-estimated the abundance of taxa. The difficulty of interpreting such data is discussed, with special reference to the rapid assessment of water quality in biomonitoring studies.

The compliance of macroalgal and macroinvertebrate assemblages to anthropogenic disturbance gradients (e.g., nutrient enrichment) was investigated at intertidal rocky shores. Macroalgae and macroinvertebrates presented parallel behavior, both showing shifts in the communities’ structural variation along the gradients, in which an higher number of opportunistic species (and higher abundances) were found in more stressful sites (close to the disturbance source), in contrast to less disturbed sites (far from the disturbance source), which showed higher presence of more sensitive species (and higher abundance of several of them). The macroinvertebrate abundance and taxonomic composition, which are parameters required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to be included in tools for the ecological quality status assessment, responded to the disturbance gradient. Results suggest that the macroinvertebrate biological element might be considered an indicator of disturbance in intertidal rocky shores as good as the macroalgae, and therefore the development of a specific methodology based solely on benthic macroinvertebrates of rocky shores, presently a gap in the ecological quality status assessment for the WFD, seems feasible.  相似文献

Rivers are among the most endangered ecosystems of the world with dramatically decreasing biodiversity. Rehabilitation programmes aiming at restoration of riverine ecosystems rely on the recolonisation of native macroinvertebrates from refuges. We examined whether a relatively natural remnant of the former river Rhine (Altrhein) harbours a higher richness of benthic macroinvertebrates than two sites of the modified Rhine with artificial and semi-natural embankments near Basel. All three sites were bimonthly sampled between May 2007 and May 2008 using three techniques: Kick and Sweep, drifting animals collected from pieces of stone turned by hand, and animals collected from stone surfaces. Taxa richness was higher in the Altrhein than in the two sampling sites in the river Rhine, but it was mainly a result of the large number of individuals sampled at this site. Despite 17% of taxa recorded were alien, the three sampling sites differed neither in the number of alien taxa nor in their abundances. However, lower percentages of both alien taxa and individuals were recorded in the Altrhein than at the other two sites in the Rhine. Indicator value analysis showed that the macroinvertebrate community of the Altrhein maintains several native and specific taxa. Multivariate analyses supported the separation of the communities collected at different sampling sites and also the uniqueness of the community in the Altrhein. The observed patterns, however, strongly depended on the sampling method applied, thereby calling the attention to the application of standard sampling methods and also to the restriction of result comparisons on projects using identical sampling methodology. Our study shows that the remnant of the former river Rhine serves as a refuge for macroinvertebrates which may facilitate future restoration of the river embankment.  相似文献

Mediterranean coastal areas are characterised by heavily transformed landscapes and an ever-increasing number of ponds are subjected to strong alterations. Although benthic diatoms and macroinvertebrates are widely used as indicators in freshwater ecosystems, little is still known about the diatom communities of lowland freshwater ponds in the Mediterranean region, and, furthermore, there are few macroinvertebrate-based methods to assess their ecological quality, especially in Italy. This article undertakes an analysis of benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities of permanent freshwater ponds, selected along a gradient of anthropogenic pressures, to identify community indicators (taxa and/or metrics) useful to evaluate the effect of human impacts. A series of 21 ponds were sampled along Tyrrhenian coast in central Italy. Five of these ponds, in a good conservations status and surrounded by woodland were selected as ‘reference sites’ for macroinvertebrates and epipelic diatoms. The remaining sixteen ponds were located in an agricultural landscape subject to different levels of human impact. The total number of macroinvertebrate taxa found in each pond was significantly higher in reference sites than in both the intermediate and heavily degraded ones, whereas the diatom species richness did not result in a good community variable to evaluate the pond ecological quality. The analysis revealed a substantial difference among the compositions of diatom communities between reference ponds and degraded ponds. The former were characterised by the presence of several species belonging to genera, such as Pinnularia sp., Eunotia sp., Stauroneis sp., Neidium sp., all of which were mostly absent from degraded ponds. Furthermore, the taxonomic richnesses of some macroinvetebrate groups (Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera), and taxa composition attributes of macroinvertebrate communities (total abundance, percentages of top three dominant taxa, percentages of Pleidae, Ancylidae, Hirudinea, Hydracarina) significantly correlated with variables linked with anthropogenic pressures. The results of the investigation suggested that diatoms tended more to reflect water chemistry through changes in community structure, whereas invertebrates responded to physical habitat changes primarily through changes in taxonomic richness. The methodologies developed for the analysis of freshwater benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities may have a considerable potential as a tool for assessing the ecological status of this type of water body, complying with the European Union Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC.
