The paper offers a critique of bizarreness studies that compare dreams to real world probability ratios and directed thought processes as a basis for determining the degree of bizarreness in dreams. It examines two cases from the literature and suggests that dreams are better compared to non-directed, or imaginative waking thought processes, specifically Inner Thought and Speech (or speech for oneself, in Lev Vygotsky's definition), in which associative mechanisms operate freely hand in hand with (primarily) visual imagery before logical thought mechanisms come into play. The article suggests that dreams create a world order, or umwelt, with its own distinct cognitive domain in which waking considerations of efficiency, logic, and common sense are only thematically relevant. Dreams follow their own logic and can only be approached as thought-in-progress, or a search for coherence leading up many blind alleys. Finally, the relevance to dreams of the Inner Thought principle of predication, or abbreviation is examined.  相似文献

Summary 1. Rates of growth (length increase of stolons) and of asexual reproduction (increase in number of polyps) were determined in secondaryClava multicornis colonies of a clone exposed to 12 different combinations of water temperature and salinity (12°, 17°, 22° C; 16 , 24 , 32 , 40 S). Sexual reproduction (via gonophores) has been observed only at 12° and 17° C; temperature and salinity ranges are narrower for sexual than for asexual reproduction.2. The data obtained are insufficient for a detailed analysis; they provide, however, interesting insights into the variability of growth and reproduction ofC. multicornis caused by different intensities of temperature and salinity.3. It appears that temperature requirements for maximum colony increase are reduced as the colony grows older.4. One feeding period per 24 hours seems insufficient for maximum growth and reproduction at the higher temperature levels, especially at 22° C.5. The different degrees of environmental stress endured during the initial period of transfer into the test combinations of temperature and salinity have affected the resulting colony size at least up to an age of 39 days. More appropriate criteria for assessment of rates of growth and reproduction are therefore the doubling times (number of days within which stolon length and polyp numbers taken 20 days after initiation of experiments have doubled).6. On the basis of doubling time values, increase in stolon length is progressively reduced with increasing water temperature (12°, 17°, 22° C). At 12° and 17° C stolons grow fastest in 32 , followed by 24 , 16 and 40 S; at 22° C stolon growth rates are identical in 32 and 24 S.7. Doubling times of polyp numbers per colony show a less obvious trend. In 56-day-old colonies, however, stolon length and polyp number are modified to similar degrees by the various temperatures and salinities offered. The sequence of temperatures causing fastest increase in polyp number is 12°>17°>22° C; the respective sequence of salinities reads: 24 , 32 , 16 , 40 S.8. Stolon length and polyp number per colony increase exponentially; most curves obtained exhibit undulations indicating endogenous growth rhythms.9. During the initial period of transfer into the final test media, asexual reproduction via budding seems to have been stimulated by a reduction in salinity.10. The doubling times obtained forC. multicornis are considerably longer than those found forCordylophora caspia and indicate that our culture conditions may have been suboptimal.

Kurzfassung Einzelpolypen eines Klons vonC. multicornis Forskål wurden schrittweise in 12 verschiedene Temperatur-Salzgehalts-Kombinationen überführt und — während sie zu neuen Kolonien heranwuchsen — das Längenwachstum ihrer Stolonen, die Geschwindigkeit ihrer asexuellen Vermehrung durch Knospung neuer Hydranthen sowie die Gonophorenausbildung (sexuelle Fortpflanzung) registriert. Die erhaltenen Daten sind unzureichend für eine detaillierte Analyse, gewähren jedoch interessante Einblicke in die Bedeutung der verschiedenen Temperatur- und Salzgehaltsbedingungen für Wachstum und Vermehrung. Die anfängliche, schrittweise Überführung in die Testmedien verursacht per se Leistungsunterschiede, deren Auswirkungen sich mindestens bis zu einem Alter von 39 Tagen verfolgen lassen. Doubling times stellen daher objektivere Kriterien dar als absolute Zuwachswerte. Die doubling times von Kolonien, welche länger als 20 Tage in den Testmedien gewachsen waren, zeigen eine Verringerung der Stolonenzuwachsrate mit steigender Temperatur (12°, 17°, 22° C). Die Reihenfolge der fördernden Wirkung der einzelnen Salzgehaltsstufen ergibt sich zu 32 , 24 , 16 , 40 S. Im Prinzip ähnliche Verhältnisse liegen hinsichtlich der asexuellen Vermehrungsrate vor. Bemessen an den getesteten Kriterien scheinen die Temperaturansprüche mit zunehmendem Koloniealter abzunehmen. Die errechneten doubling times sind wesentlich länger als beiCordylophora; möglicherweise deutet dieser Unterschied auf inadäquate Kulturbedingungen (Fütterung, Wasserbewegung) hin.

A Bacillus species originally elected for growth at the expense of alkylbenzene sulphonate detergents was found to metabolise a wide range of aromatic compounds. p-Hydroxybenzoate (PHB) was initially hydroxylated to protocatechuate (PCA) i.e. 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate, which was oxidatively cleaved to succinate and acetyl-CoA by a classical ortho cleavage pathway initiated by a substrate-specific 3, 4-oxygenase: no evidence of an alternative meta cleavage pathway was detected. Several key enzymes of this ortho cleavage pathway were induced by growth of the Bacillus on either PHB or PCA. Both PHB and PCA were able to act as sole source of carbon for energy and overall growth of the microorganism.In strict contrast, the higher homologue p-hydroxyphenylacetate (PHPA), after initial hydroxylation to 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylacetate (DHPA), was oxidatively cleaved to 4-carboxymethyl-2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde (CMHMS) by a meta cleavage catalysed by a substrate-specific 2, 3-oxygenase: no evidence of an alternative ortho cleavage was detected. Several lines of evidence suggested that CMHMS was not further metabolised by the Bacillus and accumulated in the growth medium. Both PHPA and DHPA were unable to act as sole source of carbon for energy and overall growth.The implication of the occurrence in a single bacterium of two separate oxidative pathways catalysing the cleavage of different aromatic nuclei have been discussed.  相似文献

153Sm-EDTMP (ethylenediaminetetra(methylenephosphonic) acid) is of considerable interest as a bone therapeutic radiopharmaceutical but its properties in solution are not yet well characterized. The protonation constants of EDTMP and the formation constants of the complexes of Sm-EDTMP have accordingly been measured potentiometrically by glass electrode titrations at 25°C in 0.15 M NaCl. Six protonation constants (log 011 = 9.638, log 012 = 17.330, log 013 = 23.597, log 014 = 28.636, log 015 = 31.501, log 016 = 32.624) and the formation constants of the [Sm(EDTMP)H-1]6- (log 11-1 = 4.865), [SmEDTMP]5- (log 110 = 12.018), [Sm(EDTMP)H]4- (log 111 = 17.892) and [Sm(EDTMP)H2]3- (log 112 = 23.437) complexes were determined. Computer simulations indicate that the [SmEDTMP]5- and the hydroxy [Sm(EDTMP)H-1]6- species are the major Sm(III) complexes formed in blood plasma, which explains the high degree of localization in the kidney and urine observed in biodistribution studies. Calcium ions are probably the maior competitor for EDTMP in blood plasma. As the presence of secondary skeletal metastases results in a high rate of bone turnover, it is possible that the high concentration of calcium at these sites encourages localization of 153Sm-EDTMP.  相似文献

Competition of a number of progesterone 16,17-cycloalkane derivatives with 3H-labeled ligands for the binding sites of rat uterine progesterone receptor, uterine pentaranophilin, and blood serum pentaranophilin was studied. We found that the selective ligands for the progesterone receptor are progesterone, 16,17-cyclopropanoprogesterone, and 16,17-cyclopent-3-enoprogesterone and the selective ligands for serum pentaranophilin are 6-methyl-16,17-cyclohexanopregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione and 3-hydroxy-16,17-cyclohexanopregn-5-en-20-one. No selective ligands for the uterine pentaranophilin were found. The majority of substituents in rings A, B, and D we studied decreased the affinity of ligands for all the three proteins. The substitution of the 5-3-hydroxy grouping for the 4-3-keto grouping exerted the strongest negative effect in the case of the progesterone receptor and the uterine pentaranophilin, whereas the introduction of the 3,4-dimethyl grouping strongly inhibited the ligand affinity for the uterine pentaranophilin. The extent and even the direction of the effect of a substituent on the affinity of ligands for the proteins substantially depended on the presence of other substituents in the steroid molecules. We hypothesized that a certain similarity exists between three proteins studied in respect to the structures of their ligand-binding pockets.  相似文献

Summary Ventral and dorsal aortic blood pressure, heart rate and plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline have been measured in Atlantic cod before and after stress. The stress was induced by lowering the water level in the tank, which forced the animals to lie on their side struggling to regain the normal posture. The effects of stress were studied in fish in which the nerve supply to the head kidney was sectioned, using sham-operated animals as controls. In control animals, there was an increase in the ventral aortic blood pressure and plasma levels of both catecholamines as a result of stress while the dorsal aortic blood pressure remains constant and heart rate, if anything, decreases. The effect on the heart rate can be blocked by atropine, indicating a vagal reflex. In fish where catecholamine release from chromaffin tissue was strongly reduced by sectioning the nerve supply to the head kidney, the dorsal aortic blood pressure was lower before stress by comparison to controls, and decreased further following stress. No significant changes in ventral or dorsal aortic blood pressure and heart rate were observed in another group of fish where the sympathetic innervation of the gills had been sectioned, when compared to sham-operated controls before or after stress. It is concluded that circulating catecholamines released from the head kidney play a major role in the control of branchial vascular resistance after stress, counter-acting the effect of a non-adrenergic constrictory innervation of the gills. Summary Isolated rat liver gap junctions were split by two methods. In the first method, isolated gap junctions were stabilized by cross-linking their cytoplasmic surfaces with glutaraldehyde under conditions that prevented the entry of glutaraldehyde into the gap region. The stabilized junctions were then split in the junctional gap with SDS. In the second procedure, unfixed gap junctions were split by incubation in ureacontaining solutions. Junctional splitting was monitored by electron microscopy of thin sectioned and freeze fractured membrane pellets. Sidedness of the split junctional membranes was defined by labeling their cytoplasmic surfaces with glutaraldehyde-activated ferritin before splitting with urea. Gap junctional splitting did not result in any loss of protein components as determined by SDS-gel electrophoresis. The glutaraldehyde cross-linking procedure was also used to determine the effects of various detergents on the protein-protein interactions in the gap region. Of the detergents tested, only SDS caused junctional splitting.  相似文献

Stable carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) isotopes were used to elucidate primary food sources and trophic relationships of organisms in Khung Krabaen Bay and adjacent offshore waters. The three separate sampling sites were mangroves, inner bay and offshore. The 13C values of mangrove leaves were –28.2 to –29.4, seagrass –10.5, macroalgae –14.9 to –18.2, plankton –20.0 to –21.8, benthic detritus –15.1 to –26.3, invertebrates –16.5 to –26.0, and fishes –13.4 to –26.3. The 15N values of mangrove leaves were 4.3 to 5.7, seagrass 4.3, macroalgae 2.2 to 4.4, plankton 5.7 to 6.4 , benthic detritus 5.1 to 5.3, invertebrates 7.2 to 12.2 , and fishes 6.3 to 15.9. The primary producers had distinct 13C values. The 13C values of animals collected from mangroves were more negative than those of animals collected far from shore. The primary carbon sources that support food webs clearly depended on location. The contribution of mangroves to food webs was confined only to mangroves, but a mixture of macroalgae and plankton was a major carbon source for organisms in the inner bay area. Offshore organisms clearly derived their carbon through the planktonic food web. The 15N values of consumers were enriched by 3–4 relative to their diets. The 15N data suggests that some of aquatic animals had capacity to change their feeding habits according to places and availability of foods and as a result, individuals of the same species could be assigned to different trophic levels at different places.  相似文献

Screening studies with strict and facultative anaerobic bacteria showed that Clostridium app. and several other representatives of Bacillaceae and Enterobacteriaceae actively degraded -hexachlorocyclohexane (-HCH) under anaerobic conditions. Representatives of Lactobacillaceae and Propronibacterium were inactive. With 36Cl-labelled -HCH a nearly complete dechlorination was shown to occur in 4–6 days by Clostridium butyricum, C. pasteurianum and Citrobacter freundii, while other facultative anaerobic species were less active.Aerobically grown facultative anaerobes also dechlorinated actively -HCH during subsequent anaerobic incubation with glucose, pyruvate or formate as substrates. The -, - and -HCH isomers were also, but more slowly, dechlorinated (>>-HCH). All species active in anaerobic degradation of -HCH formed -tetrachlorocyclohexene (TCH) as the main intermediate metabolite and no -pentachlorocyclohexene (PCH) or other isomers of TCH or PCH have been found. Small amounts of tri- and tetrachlorinated benzenes have been found too. Pompholyx is one clinical form of the endoparasitic-hematogenous skin eruptions. It is characterized by sago-grain-like, deeply embedded blisters or pustules within the normal, primarily non-inflamed skin, localized to the palms, soles, fingers, toes and interdigital webs, and in the nail organ. The blisters may be located in the nail wall causing paronychia, and/or beneath the nail plate causing onychia. The discussion of the etiology and pathogenesis of the pompholyx of the nail organ is inseparable from pompholyx at other sites (e.g. palms and soles), since they are identical. Hence, the term pompholyx should replace such misleading terms as infectious eczematoid dermatitis, id eruption, of the hand and/or feet, dermato- or epidermophytosis, dyshidrosis, and the vernacular athlete's foot. Even though hyphomycetes (true pathogens and common molds) of many sorts may be detected in the roof of the blisters, particularly on the feet, and scrapings of detritus from the nails, they have no role in the etiology or pathogenesis of this condition. Due to an universal infection immunity pompholyx is not infectious or transmissible. True onychomycosis is clinically and pathogenetically an entirely different condition. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the fundamental differences in etiology and pathogenesis between the two conditions.  相似文献

The cDNA clones of two potato -tubulin genes were isolated from a tuberising stolon tip library. Analysis of 20 positive clones showed that they represented one or another of two different but very similar -tubulin genes, designated TUBST1 and TUBST2. The expression pattern of -tubulin genes in the potato plant was investigated by RNA blot analysis and by RT-PCR. Southern analysis of potato genomic DNA with coding and non-coding -tubulin probes revealed that there are multiple -tubulin genes in the potato genome and that there is likely to be considerable divergence in the 3 non-coding sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of plant -tubulin genes is described.  相似文献

An intensive and systematic investigation of the oxidation of cholesterol (CL) to cholest-4-en-3-one (CN) by Rhodococcus erythropolis was undertaken in the presence of natural and chemically modified cyclodextrins (CDs) in a stirred bioreactor. The biotransformation was found to be strongly affected by the mode of addition of the natural CDs. While simultaneous addition of CL with either - or -CD led to a limited enhancement effect, the microbial oxidation of - and -CD complexes of CL was totally inhibited. In contrast, the alkylated CDs- dimethyl-, trimethyl- and hydroxypropyl--CD exhibited a remarkable enhancement of the microbial oxidation, irrespective of their mode of addition. The performance of the alkylated CDs was interpreted in the light of the measured phase solubility diagrams of CL and CN. It was thus shown that unlike the low solubilising power of hydroxypropyl--CD, dimethyl- and trimethyl--CD at 90 mm each, dissolved 9.3 and 8.7 g/l of CL and CN, respectively. Further investigation focused on the formation of CD complexes with CL and CN, analysed by X-ray powder diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance. It was thus shown that -CD forms a 2:1 CD:CL and CD:CN water-insoluble complexes. A mechanism of the biotransformation in homogeneous and heterogeneous CD media was presented while suggesting a direct interaction of the CD-substrate complex with microbial cells. Summary The timing mechanism underlying ultradian (2–3 h) activity patterns in the common vole, Microtus arvalis, was studied using behavioural deprivation experiments. These were aimed at distinguishing between a homeostatic control mechanism, in which the rhythmic behaviour itself is part of the causal loop, and a clock mechanism, independent of the behaviour.In 175 experiments, deprivation of food during 3 ultradian cycles in (subjective) daytime did not result in significant changes in the ultradian periodicity of attempts to obtain the food, compared with ad lib. access to food and water. A minor, but significant increase in ultradian activity time () occurred in the course of the deprivation, but this was compensated by a shorter ultradian rest (). These results were obtained both in intact animals (n = 24), which showed ultradian and circadian rhythmicity in behaviour, and in animals (n = 21) with electrolytic lesions aimed at the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), which lacked the circadian modulation of behaviour. Simultaneous deprivation of water and food in 8 voles without circadian rhythmicity during 40 experiments also did not lead to any change in the ultradian periodicity of feeding attempts.Rest deprivation was studied in 5 SCN lesioned voles, by forcing running wheel activity to continue following spontaneous running. Thus, the experimental activity bout was artificially lengthened to 2–9 h in 67 experiments. The onset of the subsequent rest episodes occurred independent of the duration of the preceding . The duration of was dependent on the preceding, experimental in a periodic fashion. The interval experimental (=lengthened +following ) was equal to one, two or three times the control (obtained on nonexperimental days). This result fits the prediction of a clock model and is in conflict with a monotonicincrease of with , as expected in a homeostatic, restorative process.It is concluded that the ultradian timing of activity in the common vole can be explained neither by homeostatic hunger or thirst mechanisms nor by homeostatic rest/activity regulation. Summary The filtering apparatus of eleven Cladoceran species was studied. The distances between the setulae, which act as filters, were measured. Among adult individuals, they vary from 0.2 m in Diaphanosoma brachyurum to 4.7 m in Sida crystallina. Species can be grouped according to the mesh-sizes, as fine mesh filter-feeders: Diaphanosoma brachyurum, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia magna; medium mesh filter-feeders: Daphnia galeata, D. hyalina. D. pulicaria, Bosmina coregoni, and coarse mesh filter-feeders: Holopedium gibberum and Sida crystallina. In Daphnia hyalina, the distances between setulae increase from 0.3–0.4 m in small juveniles, to 0.8–2.0 m in adults. In Daphnia magna, the mesh-size of the filter does not increase significantly with growth. There is good evidence that the relative abundance of the filter-feeding types varies with the trophic state of the lake. In oligotrophic lakes the coarse mesh filter-feeders usually dominate throughout the year. The seasonal succession of zooplankton species in eutrophic lakes can be interpreted as a succession of feeding types; during winter coarse mesh filter-feeders dominate, while fine mesh filter-feeders are most abundant during summer phytoplankton blooms. Our results support the hypothesis that the species composition of filter-feeding zooplankton is strongly influenced by the amount of suspended bacteria which are available as food only for filter-feeding species with fine meshes.  相似文献

Summary A Virginia population of the forest-dwelling salamander Plethodon cinereus was repeatedly sampled over four years to determine volume and number of prey ingested under varying conditions of moisture and temperature. The proportion of the population on a daily negative energy budget was estimated by comparing actual foraging success with laboratory determined values of energetic requirements at various temperatures.Prey became limited in availability during rainless periods, apparently because salamanders were not able to forage in dry leaf litter. Foraging success increased with increasing rainfall. Food was a limiting resource for a majority of the population on most sampling days, as determined by energy budget analysis. While ambient moisture regulated food availability, ambient temperature set the metabolic requirements and assimilation efficiencies for the population. Consequently, food was more limiting on dry, warm days and less so on wet, cool days. These data support the hypothesis that intraspecific competition frequently occurs for a food resource that is periodically limited in availability.  相似文献

The formation of heteroduplexes from the amplified products of homologous alleles has been shown to be useful in the identification of heterozygotes carrying deletion or insertion mutations. Here, we describe an improved procedure that allows the detection of single base pair (bp) deletions on nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels. Carriers for a common Mediterranean -thalassemic mutation, 6 (-A), could be easily detected by use of this method, as could carriers of a 1-bp deletion in the cystic fibrosis gene.  相似文献

Laboratory radioisotope experiments were used to investigate the effects of phytoplankton seasonal succession on the selectivity and clearance rates of a suspension-feeding copepod in two Indiana lakes. Responses to particle size and quality were tested by allowing adult female Diaptomus birgei feeding in natural seston to select between a small (6×7 m) flagellate (Chlamydomonas reinhardii) and a large, poor quality food (heat-killed Carteria olivieri, 22×25 m). Short-term responses were tested in one lake by additional treatments in which copepods were acclimated for 5–6 h in filtered lake water (starved) or natural seston with added Chlamydomonas (enriched). Copepods from both lakes fed selectively on the small live flagellate during the spring bloom of edible phytoplankton but fed selectively on the larger, poor quality particle during the clear water phase when food was scarce. These results are interpreted as an interaction between the concentration-dependent selectivity for high quality foods predicted by optimal diet theory and a perceptual bias for large-sized particles. Selectivity for high-quality food was intermediate and clearance rates were depressed when total phytoplankton abundance was high but dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria. In each experiment copepods also responded to the short-term manipulations by exhibiting weaker discrimination against the poor quality particle in the starvation treatment and stronger discrimination in the enriched treatment. A two-way mixed model ANOVA revealed substantial short term (37%) and seasonal (53%) components to the total variance in selectivity. Clearance rates were also influenced by both phytoplankton succession and the short-term resource manipulations. As expected, clearance rates on the poor quality food were more sensitive to the abundance of alternative foods. These results show how the feeding behavior of a freshwater copepod is modulated by both seasonal and short-term variation in natural food.  相似文献

Conclusion At several places in this paper we have made use of a well-known rhetorical device: an argument was made; a character —dubbed fictional reader — was then evoked who voiced some objections against that particular argument; and finally, we answered those objections, thus bringing to a close, at least temporarily, our argument. The use of this device raises a question: How is the presence of the fictional reader to be understood? Is it a mere rhetorical tool, or does this character designate some particular target? For instance, depending on the context, it could be seen as aimed at different straw men: traditionally minded sociologists, Whiggish historians, well-intentioned philosophers of science. Actually, none of these characters is behind the fictional reader. Rather, it refers, potentially, to any of the scientific actors (Milstein, Schwaber, Koprowski, Cohn, and so on) who inhabit our set of narratives. In other words, the fictional reader is an icon for the native reader/writer who simultaneously produces and questions the products of that particular literary activity known as scientific texts, by explicitly and implicitly raising the issue of the distinction between fact and technique.By following actors in their disputes about the novelty of K & M's contribution, it became apparent that it is not exactly clear which of the different elements of hybridoma technology should be regarded as novel. Was it the use of the P3 myeloma line? Was it the theoretical framework related to the notion of allelic exclusion? Was it ...? In each and every case, arguments can be made for or against the existence of a certain continuity or discontinuity with previous work. And in each case, the determination of novelty, as translated through the continuity/discontinuity issue, appeared to be hanging on the previous attribution of an epistemological status to the object that had allegedly been discovered: was it a fact or a technique?If one focuses on the relatively narrow network of immunogenetics, it could be argued that within that particular evidential context a series of facts had been established which, when transferred to other fields, such as the virological research being pursued in Koprowski's institute, were translated into a technique. However, as we have seen, even from an immunogenetic point of view the production of monoclonal antibodies can be viewed as being simultaneously a fact and a technique to establish that fact. Not only, as he himself noted,139 was Milstein not seeking to develop a technique for the production of monoclonal antibodies when the original experiments were carried out, but the significance later imputed to those experiments was not immediately attributed to them. The paper was seen as one among other papers that used cell fusion techniques to dissect the genetic control of antibody diversity. Distinctions that now appear crucial (e.g.: were the fusion partners two myelomas or a myeloma and a spleen cell?) were easily overlooked. At some point, around 1977, the production of monoclonal antibodies became a goal in itself, no longer linked to the initial immunogenetic network. The transformation of [MILSTEIN 75] into the foundational event of hybridoma technology was thus achieved. This transformation did not flow naturally from the original experiments. Rather, it involved specific investments which mobilized the activity of a large number of other scientific and industrial actors.140 A tentative generalization can be deduced from our case study. The dichotomy between fact and technique that underlines much of contemporary science studies seem to be fundamentally misconceived, insofar as the determination of what counts as a fact and what counts as a technique is not possible on a priori grounds. Historians and sociologists of science are confronted with a field of heterogeneous interventions where particular pieces of work are constituted as discrete entities and simultaneously attributed a technical or a factual identity. Novelty and innovation are precisely the result of such polymorphic attributional processes.  相似文献

A recent model of parental provisioning (the tradeoff model) suggests that the maximum delivery rate of food to nestlings represents a tradeoff between parental residual reproductive value and nestling survival. In contrast, Lack's hypothesis suggests that maximum provisioning rate determines brood size and therefore delivery rates are limited by shortages of food or foraging time, not by tradeoffs of parental investment. Several authors have examined the shape of the per-nestling feeding curves to test the tradeoff model against Lack's hypothesis. We show that Lack's hypothesis can produce per-nestling feeding curves consistent with the tradeoff model. Therefore, the shape of the per-nestling feeding curve cannot be used to distinguish between the models.  相似文献

Summary The mean stable-carbon isotope ratios (13C) for polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tissues (bone collagen –15.7, muscle –17.7, fat –24.7) were close to those of the same tissues from ringed seals (Phoca hispida) (–16.2, –18.1, and –26.1, respectively), which feed exclusively from the marine food chain. The 13C values for 4 species of fruits to which polar bears have access when on land in summer ranged from –27.8 to –26.2, typical of terrestrial plants in the Arctic. An animal's 13C signature reflects closely the 13C signature of it's food. Accordingly, the amount of food that polar bears consume from terrestrial food webs appears negligible, even though some bears spend 1/3 or more of each year on land during the seasons of greatest primary productivity.  相似文献
