Seventeen subjects performed resistance training of the leg extensor and flexor muscle groups two (2/wk) or three (3/wk) times per week. Changes in the relative myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform contents (I, IIa and IIx) of the vastus lateralis and isometric, isokinetic and squat-lift one-repetition maximum (1RM) strength were compared between conditions after both a common training period (6 weeks) and number of training sessions (18). After 6 weeks and 18 sessions (9 weeks for the 2/wk group), increments in 1RM strength for the 3/wk and 2/wk groups were similar [effect size (ES) differences ≈0.3, 3/wk > 2/wk], whereas the 2/wk group presented greater isokinetic (ES differences = 0.3–1.2) and isometric (ES differences ≈0.7) strength increases than the 3/wk condition. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in MHC IIa percentage was evident for the 2/wk group after 18 sessions. Both training groups exhibited a trend towards a reduction in the relative MHC IIx and an increase in MHC IIa contents (ES range = 0.5–1.24). However, correlations between changes in the strength and MHC profiles were weak (r 2: 0.0–0.5). Thus, isometric and isokinetic strength responses to variations in training frequency differed from 1RM strength responses, and changes in strength were not strongly related to alterations in relative MHC content. Muscle co-activation around the knee is important during ambulation and balance. The wide range of methodological approaches for the quantification of co-activation index (CI) makes comparisons across studies and populations difficult. The present study determined within- and between-session reliability of different methodological approaches for the quantification of the CI of the knee extensor and flexor muscles during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). Eight healthy volunteers participated in two repeated testing sessions. A series of knee extension MVICs of the dominant leg with concomitant torque and electromyographic (EMG) recordings were captured. CI was calculated utilizing different analytical approaches. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed that within-session measures displayed higher reliability (ICC > 0.861) and lower variability (Coefficient of variation; CV < 21.8%) than between-session measures (ICC < 0.645; CV > 24.2%). A selection of a 500 ms or larger window of RMS EMG activity around the PT delivered more reliable and less variable results than other approaches. Our findings suggest that the CI can provide a reliable measure for comparisons among conditions and is best utilized for within-session experimental designs.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to determine the day-to-day reliability in stride characteristics in rats during treadmill walking obtained with two-dimensional (2D) motion capture. Kinematics were recorded from 26 adult rats during walking at 8 m/min, 12 m/min and 16 m/min on two separate days. Stride length, stride time, contact time, swing time and hip, knee and ankle joint range of motion were extracted from 15 strides. The relative reliability was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC(1,1)) and (ICC(3,1)). The absolute reliability was determined using measurement error (ME). Across walking speeds, the relative reliability ranged from fair to good (ICCs between 0.4 and 0.75). The ME was below 91 mm for strides lengths, below 55 ms for the temporal stride variables and below 6.4° for the joint angle range of motion. In general, the results indicated an acceptable day-to-day reliability of the gait pattern parameters observed in rats during treadmill walking. The results of the present study may serve as a reference material that can help future intervention studies on rat gait characteristics both with respect to the selection of outcome measures and in the interpretation of the results.  相似文献

An electron dense material was spontaneously observed between the lymphocyte and erythrocyte plasma membranes. The goal of this study was to determine the repeatability of gait parameters measured by a force plate gait analysis system (Leonardo Mechanograph® GW) in healthy children. Nineteen healthy children and adolescents (age range: 7–17 years) walked at a self-selected speed on an 11-m-long walkway. Vertical ground reaction forces were measured in the central 6 m of the walkway. Each participant performed three blocks of three trials while walking barefoot and three blocks of three trials while wearing shoes. There were no differences between trials within each condition. All force and spatiotemporal parameters had intraclass correlation coefficients above 0.87 and coefficients of variation in the order of 1–6%. In this group of healthy children and adolescents, gait analysis with a force plate system produced repeatable intra-day results.  相似文献

Day-to-day variability and single-measurement reliability of selected isokinetic knee extension-flexion strength and endurance indices were assessed in 10 adult men and 8 adult women. On three occasions separated by at least 5 days, the subjects completed 4 reciprocal maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) at different angular velocities (1.05 rad.s-1 and 3.14 rad.s-1). The men also completed a muscular endurance test consisting of 30 reciprocal, MVC at 3.14 rad.s-1. Coefficient of variation, intra-class correlation coefficient and standard error of single-measurement scores support the continued use of gravity corrected peak torque (PT) and average peak torque (APT) as indices of isokinetic leg strength. Similarly, gravity corrected APT and total work should be the recommended indices of isokinetic leg muscular endurance in men. The results suggest that these isokinetic indices must be assessed using multiple day-to-day trial protocols adequately to describe performance capacity. Composite indices such as the ratio of Knee flexion to extension PT and fatigue measurements offer considerably reduced reliability and a greater potential for misinterpretation. The reliability of knee extension indices generally exceeds that of flexion indices. Similar variability and reproducibility of responses were observed between men and women and between reciprocal contractions performed at angular velocities of 1.05 rad.s-1 and 3.14 rad.s-1.  相似文献

Two lines of evidence have been cited to support the assertion that the root cap is the sole site of graviperception in the root. The first evidence is based on surgical removal of the cap, which abolishes the response to gravity. This is sufficient to conclude that the cap is involved in gravitropism, but not to conclude that the cap is the site of graviperception. The second is based on the results of centrifugation experiments, in which different parts of the plant are subjected to different centrifugal forces. The data from such experiments have been cited to support the conclusion that the perception of gravity is limited to the rootcap. However, these data actually support the conclusion that gravity is perceived throughout the root tip, and not only in the root cap. We believe that the data support the conclusion that the root cap is involved in root gravitropism, but that there is inadequate evidence to conclude that the cap is the sole site of graviperception.  相似文献

The antioxidant and prooxidant activities of flavonoids belonging to several classes were studied to establish their structure-activity relationships against different oxidants. Special attention was paid to the flavonoids quercetin (flavone), taxifolin (flavanone) and catechin (flavanol), which possess different basic structures but the same hydroxylation pattern (3,5,7,3',4'-OH). It was found that these three flavonoids exhibited comparable antioxidant activities against different oxidants leading to the conclusion that the presence of ortho -catechol group (3',4'-OH) in the B-ring is determinant for a high antioxidant capacity. The flavone kaempferol (3,5,7,4'-OH), however, in spite of bearing no catechol group, also presents a high antioxidant activity against some oxidants. This fact can be attributed to the presence of both 2,3-double bond and the 3-hydroxyl group, meaning that the basic structure of flavonoids becomes important when the antioxidant activity of B-ring is small.  相似文献

Many bacteria simultaneously grow and spread rapidly over a surface that supplies them with nutrient. Called 'swarming', this pattern of movement directs new cells to the edge of the colony. Swarming reduces competition between cells for nutrients, speeding growth. Behind the swarm edge, where the cell density is higher, growth is limited by transport of nutrient from the subsurface to the overlying cells. Despite years of study, the choreography of swarm cell movement, the bacterial equivalent of dancing toward an exit in a very dense crowd of moving bodies, remains a mystery. Swarming can be propelled by rotating flagella, and either by pulling with type IV pili or by pushing with the secretion of slime. By identifying patterns of movement that are common to swarms making use of different engines, a model of swarm choreography can be proposed.  相似文献

Escherichia coli RNA Polymerase is a multi-subunit enzyme that catalyzes RNA synthesis, using DNA as a template. The sigma subunit of this enzyme plays an important role in the recognition of promoter sites on DNA. Using DNase I footprinting, Utpala Ramesh and Claude F. Meares [(1989) Biochem. Biophys. Res. Comm. 160, 121-125] reported that in the absence of the other subunits, sigma binds specifically to the bacteriophage lambda PR promoter DNA sequence. Mechanical assistance on joint movement is generally beneficial; however, its effects on cooperative performance and muscle activity needs to be further explored. This study examined how motor performance and muscle activity are altered when mechanical assistance is provided during isometric force control of ramp-down and hold phases. Thirteen right-handed participants (age: 24.7 ± 1.8 years) performed trajectory tracking tasks. Participants were asked to maintain the reference magnitude of 47 N (REF) during isometric elbow flexion. The force was released to a step-down magnitude of either 75% REF or 50% REF and maintained, with and without mechanical assistance. The ramp-down durations of force release were set to 0.5, 2.5, or 5.0 s. Throughout the experiment, we measured the following: (1) the force output using load cells to compute force variability and overshoot ratio; (2) peak perturbation on the elbow movement using an accelerometer; (3) the surface electromyography (sEMG) from biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles; and (4) EMG oscillation from the biceps brachii muscle in the bandwidth of 15–45 Hz. Our results indicated that mechanical assistance, which involved greater peak perturbation, demonstrated lower force variability than non-assistance (p < 0.01), while EMG oscillation in the biceps brachii muscle from 15 to 45 Hz was increased (p < 0.05). These findings imply that if assistive force is provided during isometric force control, the central nervous system actively tries to stabilize motor performance by controlling specific motor unit activity in the agonist muscle.  相似文献

Complexity represents the adaptability of the biological system, therefore the assessment of complexity during tasks such as walking may be particularly useful when attempting to better understand the recovery processes after stroke. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the complexity of lower extremity gait kinematics in persons with chronic hemiparesis due to stroke is different from that of individuals without disability during a gait task. The group of participants with chronic stroke exhibited reduced gait complexity across all body segments compared to those without disability. The decreased complexity of gait after stroke may represent diminished adaptability in the neuromotor system and may have significant implications when it comes to negotiating diverse environmental constraints and the ability to relearn pre-stroke gait patterns.  相似文献

The variability in dairy cow gait characteristics, determined by measurements of footprints (trackway measurements), was analysed. Seven gait parameters were determined from 32 non-lame dairy cows during free-speed walking on a slatted concrete walkway. The footprints were revealed by application of a thin lime powder-slurry layer to the walkway surface. The cows were observed on two test occasions with a 3-week interval, with measurements from four consecutive strides used within each test session. The variance components for cow, test and cow-test interaction were estimated by a residual (restricted) maximum likelihood method. The percentage of each variance component was calculated to assess the relative impact of each factor on total variance. Between-test variation was generally low, suggesting that cows maintain the same average gait pattern, at least over a 3-week period. The proportion of within-test variation was considerable for most trackway measurements. Stride length, step angle, step width and tracking (overlap) showed low to moderate within-test variation (12% to 27%), whereas for mediolateral displacement of rear feet and step length it was rather high (54% and 62%, respectively). Within-test variation in step asymmetry was very high (77%), suggesting the occurrence of natural, non-systematic changes in inter-limb coordination in non-lame cows. For better understanding the gait pattern in non-lame cows, linear associations between the trackway measurements and with body size were assessed. It was concluded that trackway measurements were able to describe the gait pattern in walking cows under dairy farm conditions. However, considering the relatively high within-test variation in gait, several strides should be used to obtain a representative gait pattern.  相似文献

A longstanding view in zooplankton research has been that large copepods are the important members of most communities. It has also been thought that warm water communities contain smaller copepods than temperate waters, with cold polar waters containing large species. We present copepod size spectra from detailed microscopic analysis of tropical and temperate locations, to challenge these paradigms. While the size range of copepods does increase with decreasing temperature and with depth into oceanic waters, the fundamental attributes of the size spectra are similar. Small copepods and early developmental stages dominate all communities.  相似文献

Gait analysis has been widely used to examine the behavioral presentation of numerous neurological disorders. Thorough murine model evaluation of the subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-associated gait deficits is missing. This study measures gait deficits using a clinically relevant murine model of SAH to examine associations between gait variability and SAH-associated gene expressions. A total of 159 dynamic and static gait parameters from the endovascular perforation murine model for simulating clinical human SAH were determined using the CatWalk system. Eighty gait parameters and the mRNA expression levels of 35 of the 88 SAH-associated genes were differentially regulated in the diseased models. Totals of 42 and 38 gait parameters correlated with the 35 SAH-associated genes positively and negatively with Pearson's correlation coefficients of >0.7 and <−0.7, respectively. p-SP1453 expression in the motor cortex in SAH animal models displays a significant correlation with a subset of gait parameters associated with muscular strength and coordination of limb movements. Our data highlights a strong correlation between gait variability and SAH-associated gene expression. p-SP1453 expression could act as a biomarker to monitor SAH pathological development and a therapeutic target for SAH.  相似文献

The cluster Os6(CO)18 with its bi-capped tetrahedral Os6 core reacts with some P-donor nucleophiles in toluene via associative paths, but the range of P-donors that can react at convenient rates for kinetic study is limited by the exceptional dependence of the rates on the basicity and size of the nucleophiles. The observed linear free energy relationship (LFER), shown by the small set of accessible data is accompanied by the existence of an isokinetic temperature of 89.5 ± 3.5 °C that controls the effect of nucleophiles basicity. This isokinetic behaviour is known to be an inevitable logical consequence of the existence of the LFERs at different temperatures but other necessary isokinetic properties are also demonstrated to exist. These are an isokinetic basicity (IKB) parameter, which results in the predicted temperature independence of rates of reaction with nucleophiles of a certain basicity, and an isokinetic cone angle parameter (IKCA) that is predicted to result in the temperature independence of the rates at a certain nucleophile cone angle.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantify the effects of spatial reorganisation of muscle activity on task-related and tangential components of force variability during sustained contractions. Three-dimensional forces were measured from isometric elbow flexion during submaximal contractions (50 s, 5–50% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)) and total excursion of the centre of pressure was extracted. Spatial electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded from the biceps brachii muscle. The centroids of the root mean square (RMS) EMG and normalised mutual information (NMI) maps were computed to assess spatial muscle activity and spatial relationship between EMG and task-related force variability, respectively. Result showed that difference between the position of the centroids at the beginning and at the end of the contraction of the RMS EMG and the NMI maps were different in the medial–lateral direction (P < 0.05), reflecting that muscle regions modulate their activity without necessarily modulating the contribution to the task-related force variability over time. Moreover, this difference between shifts of the centroids was positively correlated with the total excursion of the centre of pressure at the higher levels of contractions (>30% MVC, R2 > 0.30, P < 0.05), suggesting that changes in spatial muscle activity could impact on the modulation of tangential forces. Therefore, within-muscle adaptations do not necessarily increase force variability, and this interaction can be quantified by analysing the RMS EMG and the NMI map centroids.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements after submersion (swimming) for 90 min. Isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) on land and in water were collected from eight muscles on the right side of the body in 12 healthy participants (6 women and 6 men). Repeated measures analyses of variance (general linear model ANOVA) showed no significant differences in the peak amplitude MVC scores between land pre and post measurements for all muscles, p > .05. The mean of the Intraclass correlation coefficient (1, 1) for land pre and land post was .985 with (95% Cl = .978–.990), for land pre and water pre .976 (95% Cl = .964–.984) and for land pre and post, water pre and post .981 (95% Cl = .974–.987). Measuring sEMG on land before and after a prolonged submersion is highly reliable without additional waterproofing when using electrodes with 57 mm diameter.  相似文献
