Good fences make good neighbors: barrier elements and genomic regulation

In the genome, it is essential to maintain a physical barrier between active and inactive regions; however, the nature of this barrier has been elusive. In a recent issue of Molecular Cell, West et al. (2004) shed light on mechanisms underlying these molecular "fences."     

Helping thy neighbors: spillover at the mossy fiber glomerulus

Neurotransmitter "spillover" between neighboring synapses challenges the principle of synapse specificity. In this issue of Neuron, show that release from neighboring presynaptic sites contributes significantly to AMPA receptor-mediated postsynaptic currents at cerebellar mossy fiber synapses. Unexpectedly, spillover is predicted to improve the reliability and reduce the variability of transmission at this glomerular synapse.     

Development of the musculoskeletal system: meeting the neighbors

In March 2011, researchers met for the second Batsheva Seminar on Integrative Perspectives on the Development of the Musculoskeletal System. This meeting was a unique opportunity for researchers working on muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and bone to discuss the development of the musculoskeleton, recognizing that it is an integrated, functional system. The talks and discussions at this meeting highlighted that interactions between the different tissue components are crucial for musculoskeletal morphogenesis.     

A re-evaluation of the mesangial cells of the renal glomerulus

Summary The topographical localization of the mesangial cells in renal glomeruli of rats, and their relationships with the structures at the hilus of the glomerulus were studied in this investigation. It was observed that the mesangial cells occupy a parietal position in the wall of the glomerular capillaries, and that they are anatomically continuous with the smooth muscle cells of the tunica media of the glomerular arterioles.This study was supported by a United States Public Health Service Grant AM 08628 (Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases).     

Histochemical Demonstration of type IV collagen in the renal glomerulus

Summary Disulfide-groups are demonstrated in the basement membranes of glomerular capillaries, proximal convoluted tubules, and collecting ducts by means of a thiosulfation/Alcian Blue +0.8 Mol MgCl₂-staining sequence. It is suggested that the reaction shows type IV collagen of basal lamina material, which is characterized by a relatively high cystine content (8 half-cystine residues/1000).

Trenches like fences make good neighbours: Revenue sharing around Kibale National Park,Uganda

Revenue sharing aims to balance the disadvantages people encounter living next to protected areas while fostering improved conservation behaviours. In Uganda, 20% of protected area entrance fees are shared with local governments to benefit communities adjacent to national parks. The process to distribute funds and implement projects was investigated by interviewing Uganda Wildlife Authority wardens, local government and village residents around Kibale National Park, Uganda. The perceived benefit of revenue sharing by officials and local communities was collected through interviews and a household survey, while the influence of the program on conservation objectives was assessed by measuring illegal resource extraction from the national park adjacent to study villages. It was found that the program is evolving into an effective mechanism for sharing benefits, but that better project management and increased accounting transparency could further improve the program. If the projects specifically dealt with the problem of crop raiding by park-protected animals, then villagers did benefit and lower levels of illegal activity were found inside the park. Generally household perceived benefit was low, however reduced in-park illegal activity was recorded where the village chairperson perceived higher benefit from the program, implying that the village leadership may be influencing the conservation behaviours within the community. Compared with other incentive options such as loss compensation, direct payment, and collaborative management, revenue sharing appears to be an effective and practical choice, given the limited funding available to the wildlife authority to benefit local communities while trying to improve conservation behaviours.     

Senescent cells, tumor suppression, and organismal aging: good citizens, bad neighbors

Cells from organisms with renewable tissues can permanently withdraw from the cell cycle in response to diverse stress, including dysfunctional telomeres, DNA damage, strong mitogenic signals, and disrupted chromatin. This response, termed cellular senescence, is controlled by the p53 and RB tumor suppressor proteins and constitutes a potent anticancer mechanism. Nonetheless, senescent cells acquire phenotypic changes that may contribute to aging and certain age-related diseases, including late-life cancer. Thus, the senescence response may be antagonistically pleiotropic, promoting early-life survival by curtailing the development of cancer but eventually limiting longevity as dysfunctional senescent cells accumulate.     

Vision: the world through picket fences

Our visual system must allow us to see the form of objects in motion. Tracking objects of interest stabilises their images on the retina, but is not sufficient, as untracked images move on the retina. This problem is solved by cells tuned in both space and time, combining information about form with information about motion.
