Although progressive resistance training of trunk muscles on devices is very common, today, the effects of increasing resistance on trunk muscle activity during dynamic extension and flexion movements on training devices have not been reported yet. Thirty healthy subjects participated in maximal isometric and submaximal dynamic (at 30%, 50% and 70% of maximum mean torque (MMT)) extension and flexion exercises on Tergumed lumbar training devices. The normalized (as a percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC)) electromyographic activity of 16 abdominal and back muscles was investigated. The results of the present study indicated that in general, with increasing resistance from 30% MMT to 50% MMT and 70% MMT, the activity of all back muscles during the extension exercises and the activity of all abdominal muscles during the flexion exercises increased significantly. To train strength (>60% of MVIC), low intensities (30% and 50% MMT) appeared sufficient to affect the back muscles, but for the abdominals higher resistance (70% MMT) was required. In contrast to the other back muscles, the lumbar multifidus demonstrated high activity levels during both the extension and the flexion exercises. As the lumbar multifidus is demonstrated to be an important muscle in segmental stabilization of the lumbar spine, this finding may help in understanding the efficacy of rehabilitation programs using specific training devices.  相似文献

Prone hip extension has been used as a self-perturbation task to test the stability of the lumbopelvic region. However, the relationship between recruitment patterns in the hip and trunk muscles and lumbopelvic kinematics remains unknown. The present study aimed to examine if the balance of hip and trunk muscle activities are related to pelvic motion and low back muscle activity during prone hip extension. Sixteen healthy participants performed prone hip extension from 30° of hip flexion to 10° of hip extension. Surface electromyography (of the gluteus maximus, semitendinosus, rectus femoris, tensor fasciae latae, multifidus, and erector spinae) and pelvic kinematic measurements were collected. Results showed that increased activity of the hip flexor (tensor fasciae latae) relative to that of hip extensors (gluteus maximus and semitendinosus) was significantly associated with increased anterior pelvic tilt during hip extension (r=0.52). Increased anterior pelvic tilt was also significantly related to the delayed onset timing of the contralateral and ipsilateral multifidus (r=0.57, r=0.53) and contralateral erector spinae (r=0.63). Additionally, the decrease of the gluteus maximus activity relative to the semitendinosus was significantly related to increased muscle activity of the ipsilateral erector spinae (r=-0.57). These results indicate that imbalance between the agonist and antagonist hip muscles and delayed trunk muscle onset would increase motion in the lumbopelvic region.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were 1) to evaluate gender differences in back extensor endurance capacity during isometric and isotonic muscular contractions, 2) to determine the relation between absolute load and endurance time, and 3) to compare men [n = 10, age 22.4 +/- 0.69 (SE) yr] and women (n = 10, age 21.7 +/- 1.07 yr) in terms of neuromuscular activation patterns and median frequency (MF) shifts in the electromyogram (EMG) power spectrum of the lumbar and hip extensor muscles during fatiguing submaximal isometric trunk extension exercise. Subjects performed isotonic and isometric trunk extension exercise to muscular failure at 50% of maximum voluntary contraction force. Women exhibited a longer endurance time than men during the isometric task (146.0 +/- 10.9 vs. 105.4 +/- 7.9 s), but there was no difference in endurance performance during the isotonic exercise (24.3 +/- 3.4 vs. 24.0 +/- 2.8 repetitions). Absolute load was significantly related to isometric endurance time in the pooled sample (R(2) = 0.34) but not when men and women were analyzed separately (R(2) = 0.05 and 0.04, respectively). EMG data showed no differences in neuromuscular activation patterns; however, gender differences in MF shifts were observed. Women demonstrated a similar fatigability in the biceps femoris and lumbar extensors, whereas in men, the fatigability was more pronounced in the lumbar musculature than in the biceps femoris. Additionally, the MF of the lumbar extensors demonstrated a greater association with endurance time in men than in women (R(2) = 0.45 vs. 0.19). These findings suggest that gender differences in muscle fatigue are influenced by muscle contraction type and frequency shifts in the EMG signal but not by alterations in the synergistic activation patterns.  相似文献

Various stimuli such as the flexibility of lumbopelvic structures influence the neuromuscular responses of the trunk musculature, leading to different load sharing strategies and reflex muscle responses from the afferents of lumbopelvic mechanoreceptors. This link between flexibility and neuromuscular response has been poorly studied.The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between lumbopelvic flexibility and neuromuscular responses of the erector spinae, hamstring and abdominal muscles during trunk flexion–extension. Lumbopelvic movement patterns were measured in 29 healthy women, who were separated into two groups according to their flexibility during trunk flexion–extension. The electromyographic responses of erector spinae, rectus abdominis and biceps femoris were also recorded.Subjects with greater lumbar flexibility had significantly less pelvic flexibility and vice versa. Subjects with greater pelvic flexibility had a higher rate of relaxation and lower levels of hamstring activation during maximal trunk flexion.The neuromuscular response patterns of the hamstrings seem partially modulated by pelvic flexibility. Not so with the lumbar erector spinae and lumbar flexibility, despite the assertions of some previous studies. The results of this study improve our knowledge of the relationships between trunk joint flexibility and neuromuscular responses, a relationship which may play a role in low back pain.  相似文献

In many occupational settings (e.g. agriculture and construction) workers are asked to maintain static flexed postures of the low back for extended periods of time. Recent research indicates that the resulting strain in the viscoelastic, ligamentous tissues may have a deleterious effect on the stability of the spine and the normal reflex response of spinal tissues. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the previously described flexion-relaxation response in terms of the interactive effect of trunk flexion angle (30 degrees, 50 degrees, 70 degrees, 90 degrees ), knee flexion angle (0 degrees (straight knees), 20 degrees, 40 degrees ) and individual flexibiliteky (low, medium, and high). These conditions were tested under two levels of loading: no load (just supporting the weight of the torso) and trunk extension moment equal to 50% of the subject's posture-specific maximum voluntary trunk extension capacity. Surface electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from the multifidus, the longissimus, the iliocostalis, the vastus medialis, the rectus femoris, the vastus lateralis, the biceps femoris, and the gastrocnemius-soleus group from a sample of eight male participants as they performed isometric weight holding tasks in the postures defined by the combinations of trunk angle and knee angle. The results of this study showed that knee angle did have a significant effect on the lumbar extensor muscle activity but only consistently at the 90 degrees trunk angle. Participant flexibility showed a consistent trend of decreasing lumbar extensor muscle activity with decreased flexibility across all trunk angle values. Most interesting was the interactive response of flexibility and knee angle, wherein the flexibility of the participant influenced the trunk angles at which the knee flexion angle affected the flexion-relaxation response. Highly flexible subjects showed an effect of knee angle on the flexion-relaxation response only at the 90 degrees trunk angle; subjects in the medium flexibility category showed a similar response in both the 70 degrees and 90 degrees trunk angles; subject in the low flexibility group showed no knee angle effect on the flexion-relaxation response. Overall the results confirm previous results with regard to the contribution of the passive tissues to the overall trunk extension moment but also show that the tension in the bi-articular biceps femoris, which was influenced by knee flexion angle and flexibility, affects the ratio of active extensor moment contributions of the lumbar extensor musculature to passive extensor moment contributions from the muscular and ligamentous tissues. The results of this study provide empirical data describing this complicated, interactive response.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the EMG activity of lumbar multifidus (MU), longissimus thoracis (LT) and iliocostalis (IC) muscles during an upper limb resistance exercise (biceps curl). Ten healthy males performed maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) of the trunk extensors, after this, the biceps curl exercise was executed at 25%, 30%, 35% and 40% one repetition maximum during 1 min, with 10 min rest between them. EMG root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MFreq) were calculated for each lifting and lowering of the bar during the exercise bouts, to calculate slopes and intercepts. The results showed increases in the RMS and decreases in the MFreq slopes. RMS slopes were no different between muscles, indicating similar fatigue process along the exercise irrespective of the load level. MU and LT presented higher RMS irrespective of the load level, which can be related to the specific function during the standing position. On the other hand, IC and MU presented higher MFreq intercepts compared to LT, demonstrating possible differences in the muscle fiber conduction velocity of these muscles. These findings suggest that trunk muscles are differently activate during upper limb exercises, and the fatigue process affects the lumbar muscles similarly.  相似文献

A pelvic position has been sought that optimizes abdominal muscle activation while diminishing hip flexor activation. Thus, the objective of the study was to investigate the effect of pelvic position and the Janda sit-up on trunk muscle activation. Sixteen male volunteers underwent electromyographic (EMG) testing of their abdominal and hip flexor muscles during a supine isometric double straight leg lift (DSLL) with the feet held approximately 5 cm above a board. The second exercise (Janda sit-up) was a sit-up action where participants simultaneously contracted the hamstrings and the abdominal musculature while holding an approximately 45 degrees angle at the knee. Root mean square surface electromyography was calculated for the Janda sit-up and DSLL under 3 pelvic positions: anterior, neutral, and posterior pelvic tilt. The selected muscles were the upper and lower rectus abdominis (URA, LRA), external obliques, lower abdominal stabilizers (LAS), rectus femoris, and biceps femoris. The Janda sit-up position demonstrated the highest URA and LRA activation and the lowest rectus femoris activation. The Janda sit-up and the posterior tilt were significantly greater (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) than the anterior tilt for the URA and LRA muscles. Activation levels of the URA and LRA in neutral pelvis were significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively) less than the Janda sit-up position, but not significantly different from the posterior tilt. No significant differences in EMG activity were found for the external obliques or LAS. No rectus femoris differences were found in the 3 pelvis positions. The results of this study indicate that pelvic position had a significant effect on the activation of selected trunk and hip muscles during isometric exercise, and the activation of the biceps femoris during the Janda sit-up reduced the activation of the rectus femoris while producing high levels of activation of the URA and LRA.  相似文献

Objectives:The purpose of the current study was to firstly examine the effects of different whole-body vibration (WBV) frequencies in the lower-body muscles when applied simultaneously during a bridge exercise. Secondly, determine if there were any sex differences in the lower-body muscles of WBV during the bridge.Methods:Seven females and 7 males completed 2 familiarization and 1 test sessions. In the test session participants were randomized to complete one 30 s bout of a bridge exercise for 3 separate condition s followed by 3-min of rest. The 3 conditions (a) No-WBV (without WBV); (b) WBV-30 (30 Hz, low amplitude); (c) WBV-50 (50 Hz, low amplitude) were performed on a WBV platform. Muscle activity of the biceps femoris (BF), semitendinosus (ST), gluteus maximus (Gmax), multifidus muscle (MF) muscles were measured.Results:Muscle activity was increased with WBV in the BF and ST muscles at WBV-30 and WBV-50 conditions (p<0.05) vs. no-WBV. During No-WBV and WBV-50 conditions, males had a higher biceps femoris activity compared to females for (p<0.05) 45 and 27 %, respectively; however, during all conditions females had a high level of Gmax activity (57%) than males (p<0.05).Conclusion:Additional vibration at 30 and 50 Hz during the bridge exercise could be a useful method to enhance hamstring muscle activity.  相似文献

Hip and lumbar spine disorders often coexist in patients with total hip arthroplasty (THA). The current study aimed to reveal pelvic motion pathology and altered trunk and hip muscle recruitment patterns relating to pelvic motion in patients with THA. Twenty-one women who underwent THA and 12 age-matched healthy women were recruited. Pelvic kinematics and muscle recruitment patterns (i.e., amplitude, activity balance, and onset timing) of the gluteus maximus, semitendinosus, multifidus, and erector spinae were collected during prone hip extension. Compared with healthy subjects, the patients showed increased pelvic motion, especially ventral rotation, decreased multifidus muscle activity relative to the hip extensors, and delayed onset of multifidus activity, despite reaction times and speeds of leg motion not being significantly different between the groups. Furthermore, while contributing factors associated with ventral pelvic rotation were not found, delayed onset of multifidus activity was detected as a factor related to the increased anterior tilt of the pelvis (r = 0.47, p < 0.05) in patients with THA. These results suggest that patients with THA have dysfunction of the stabilizer muscles of the lumbopelvic region along with increased pelvic motion.  相似文献

Despite the wide use of surface electromyography (EMG) recorded during dynamic exercises, the reproducibility of EMG variables has not been fully established in a course of a dynamic leg exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the reproducibility of eight lower limb muscles activity level during a pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. Eight male were tested on two days held three days apart. Surface EMG was recorded from vastus lateralis, rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis, semimembranosus, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius lateral, gastrocnemius medianus and tibialis anterior during incremental exercise test. The root mean square, an index of global EMG activity, was averaged every five crank revolutions (corresponding to about 3 s at 85 rpm) throughout the tests. Despite inter-subjects variations, we showed a high reproducibility of the activity level of lower limb muscles during a progressive pedaling exercise performed until exhaustion. However, RF muscle seemed to be the less reproducible of the eight muscles investigated during incremental pedaling exercise. These results suggest that each subject adopt a personal muscle activation strategy in a course of an incremental cycling exercise but fatigue phenomenon can induce some variations in the most fatigable muscles (RF).  相似文献

During static conditions the nociceptive reflex is known to vary as a function of, for example, the stimulus position, stimulus intensity, and muscle contraction. The aim of the present human study was to investigate whether the reflex and the corresponding perception of pain are modulated by cyclic movements of the limb involved. Reflexes, evoked by nociceptive electric stimulation of the sural nerve, were recorded from the biceps femoris and the rectus femoris muscles in eight volunteers. Four different experiments were performed to compare the nociceptive reflex and pain score elicited during active isometric/dynamic flexion/extension of the knee joint. The amplitudes of the reflexes were largest for the dynamic conditions. The reflexes, evoked during dynamic extension and isometric contraction of the rectus femoris muscle, had the shortest latencies but the recordings from the biceps femoris muscle were larger than from the rectus femoris muscle. Knee joint angle recordings showed that the largest angle variations occurred for the dynamic conditions and were only marginally disturbed for the isometric conditions. A given stimulus intensity evoked the highest pain intensity during isometric contractions. This indicates that there would seem to be no causal relationship between the size of the nociceptive reflex and the pain intensity.  相似文献

Repetitive work in the stooped posture is a known risk factor for developing low back disorders (LBDs); regardless, the stooped posture is widespread throughout the world in the agriculture, construction, and mining industries. An on-body weight transfer device was tested as a possible intervention for reducing the risk of developing LBDs.Eighteen subjects (11 male and 7 female), with no history of LBDs, performed stooped posture tasks in the laboratory. Surface electromyograms of the erector spinae, rectus abdominis, biceps femoris, and tibialis anterior muscles were recorded. Bodily joint flexions were measured with a combination of inclinometers and electrogoniometers.When wearing the device in the stooped posture, biceps femoris activity and lumbar flexion were significantly reduced. Subjects who did not experience flexion–relaxation had a significant reduction in lumbar erector spinae activity.By reducing back muscle activity, and by limiting lumbar flexion, the device could reduce the risk of developing LBDs for those who work while adopting the stooped posture. The device may also be beneficial for those with existing LBDs. Follow up field studies are needed to confirm the long-term potential benefits of such an intervention approach.  相似文献

The PLAD (personal lift assistive device) was designed to reduce the lumbar moment during lifting and bending tasks via elastic elements. This investigation examined the effects of modulating the elastic stiffness. Thirteen men completed 90 lifts (15 kg) using 6 different PLAD stiffnesses in stoop, squat and freestyle lifting postures. The activity of 8 muscles were recorded (latissimus dorsi, thoracic and lumbar erector spinae, rectus abdominis, external oblique, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and rectus femoris), 3D electromagnetic sensors tracked the motion of each segment and strain gauges measured the elastic tension. EMG data were rectified, filtered, normalized and integrated as a percentage of the lifting task. The highest PLAD tension elicited the greatest reduction in erector spinae activity (mean of thoracic and lumbar) in comparison to the no-PLAD condition for the stoop (37%), squat (38%), and freestyle (37%) lifts, while prompting comparable reductions in gluteus maximums and biceps femoris activity. The highest PLAD stiffness also elicited the greatest reduction in the integrated L4/L5 flexion moment for the stoop (19.0%), squat (18.4%) and freestyle (17.4%) lifts without changing peak lumbar flexion. Each increase in PLAD stiffness further reduced the muscle activity of the posterior chain and the dynamic lumbar moment.  相似文献

Background

Biering-Sørenson (1984) found that individuals with less lumbar extensor muscle endurance had an increased occurrence of first episode low back pain. As a result, back endurance tests have been recommended for inclusion in health assessment protocols. However, different studies have reported markedly different values for endurance times, leading some researchers to believe that the back is receiving support from the biceps femoris and gluteus maximus. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the haemodynamic and neuromuscular activity of the erector spinae, biceps femoris, and gluteus maximus musculature during the Biering-Sørenson Muscular Endurance Test (BSME).

Methods

Seventeen healthy individuals and 46 individuals with chronic low back pain performed the Biering-Sørenson Muscular Endurance Test while surface electromyography was used to quantify neuromuscular activity. Disposable silver-silver-chloride electrodes were placed in a bipolar arrangement over the right or left biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, and the lumbosacral paraspinal muscles at the level of L3. Near Infrared Spectroscopy was used simultaneously to measure tissue oxygenation and blood volume changes of the erector spinae and biceps femoris.

Results

The healthy group displayed a significantly longer time to fatigue (Healthy: 168.5s, LBP: 111.1s; p ≤ 0.05). Significant differences were shown in the median frequency slope of the erector spinae between the two groups at 90–100% of the time to fatigue while no significant differences were noted in the haemodynamic data for the two groups.

Conclusion

Although the BSME has been recognized as a test for back endurance, individuals with chronic LBP appear to incorporate a strategy that may help support the back musculature by utilizing the biceps femoris and gluteus maximus to a greater degree than their healthy counterparts.

Understanding the clinical characteristics of patients with low back pain (LBP) who display improved lumbar multifidus (LM) muscle function after spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) may provide insight into a potentially synergistic interaction between SMT and exercise. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the baseline historical and physical examination factors associated with increased contracted LM muscle thickness one week after SMT. Eighty-one participants with LBP underwent a baseline physical examination and ultrasound imaging assessment of the LM muscle during submaximal contraction before and one week after SMT. The relationship between baseline examination variables and 1-week change in contracted LM thickness was assessed using correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple linear regression. Four variables best predicted the magnitude of increases in contracted LM muscle thickness after SMT. When combined, these variables suggest that patients with LBP, (1) that are fairly acute, (2) have at least a moderately good prognosis without focal and irritable symptoms, and (3) exhibit signs of spinal instability, may be the best candidates for a combined SMT and lumbar stabilization exercise (LSE) treatment approach.  相似文献

The effects of dynamic and intermittent isometric knee extension exercises on skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity were studied in seven healthy endurance-trained men. Regional muscle blood flow was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) and an [(15)O]H(2)O tracer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded in the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle during submaximal intermittent isometric and dynamic exercises. QF blood flow was 61% (P = 0.002) higher during dynamic exercise. Interestingly, flow heterogeneity was 13% (P = 0.024) lower during dynamic compared with intermittent isometric exercise. EMG activity was significantly higher (P < 0.001) during dynamic exercise, and the change in EMG activity from isometric to dynamic exercise was tightly related to the change in blood flow in the vastus lateralis muscle (r = 0.98, P < 0.001) but not in the rectus femoris muscle (r = -0.09, P = 0.942). In conclusion, dynamic exercise causes higher and less heterogeneous blood flow than intermittent isometric exercise at the same exercise intensity. These responses are, at least partly, related to the increased EMG activity.  相似文献

To compare the activity of lower extremity muscles during land walking (LW), water walking (WW), and deep-water running (DWR), 9 healthy young subjects were tested at self-selected low, moderate, and high intensities for 8 sec with two repetitions. Surface EMG electrodes were placed on the tibialis anterior (TA), soleus (SOL), medial gastrocnemius (GAS), rectus femoris (RF), and biceps femoris (BF). During DWR, the SOL and GAS activities were lower than LW and WW. The BF activities were higher during DWR than LW and WW. It was considered that the lower activity of SOL and GAS depended on water depth, and higher activity of BF occurred by greater flexion of the knee joint or extension of the hip joint during exercise.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate which statistical model - linear, logarithmic, quadratic or exponential - best described the fatigue-related electromyographic (EMG) changes of back and hip muscles. Twenty healthy volunteers performed a modified Biering-Sorensen test. The EMG activity of the latissimus dorsi (LD), longissimus thoracis pars thoracis (LTT) and lumborum (LTL), iliocostalis lumborum pars thoracis (ILT) and lumborum (ILL), multifidus (MF), gluteus maximus (GM) and biceps femoris (BF) was measured bilaterally using surface electrodes. Higher R(2) values were found for the quadratic models (p<0.05 for all muscles), and lower R(2) values for the logarithmic models (p<0.05 for LTT, LTL, ILL, MF and GM). The exponential models generated higher R(2) values compared to the linear ones for the LTT, LTL and MF (all p<0.05). Further analyses revealed, however, that these models did not add useful additional information, and therefore would only increase the complexity. The findings of the current study validate the use of simple linear regression techniques when studying fatigue-related EMG median frequency characteristics of back and hip muscles during isometric contractions.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to quantify the relative contributions of each muscle group surrounding the spine to vertebral joint rotational stiffness (VJRS) during the push-up exercise. Upper-body kinematics, three-dimensional hand forces and lumbar spine postures, and 14 channels (bilaterally from rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, latissimus dorsi, thoracic erector spinae, lumbar erector spinae, and multifidus) of trunk electromyographic (EMG) activity were collected from 11 males and used as inputs to a biomechanical model that determined the individual contributions of 10 muscle groups surrounding the lumbar spine to VJRS at five lumbar vertebral joints (L1-L2 to L5-S1). On average, the abdominal muscles contributed 64.32 +/- 8.50%, 86.55 +/- 1.13%, and 83.84 +/- 1.95% to VJRS about the flexion/extension, lateral bend, and axial twist axes, respectively. Rectus abdominis contributed 43.16 +/- 3.44% to VJRS about the flexion/extension axis at each lumbar joint, and external oblique and internal oblique, respectively contributed 52.61 +/- 7.73% and 62.13 +/- 8.71% to VJRS about the lateral bend and axial twist axes, respectively, at all lumbar joints with the exception of L5-S1. Owing to changes in moment arm length, the external oblique and internal oblique, respectively contributed 55.89% and 50.01% to VJRS about the axial twist and lateral bend axes at L5-S1. Transversus abdominis, multifidus, and the spine extensors contributed minimally to VJRS during the push-up exercise. The push-up challenges the abdominal musculature to maintain VJRS. The orientation of the abdominal muscles suggests that each muscle primarily controls the rotational stiffness about a single axis.  相似文献

A relationship exists between lumbar paraspinal muscle fatigue and quadriceps muscle activation. The objective of this study was to determine whether hip and knee joint moments during jogging changed following paraspinal fatiguing exercise. Fifty total subjects (25 with self-reported history of low back pain) performed fatiguing, isometric lumbar extension exercise until a shift in EMG median frequency corresponding to a mild level of muscle fatigue was observed. We compared 3-dimensional external joint moments of the hip and knee during jogging before and after lumbar paraspinal fatigue using a 10-camera motion analysis system. Reduced external knee flexion, knee adduction, knee internal rotation and hip external rotation moments and increased external knee extension moments resulted from repetitive lumbar paraspinal fatiguing exercise. Persons with a self-reported history of LBP had larger knee flexion moments than controls during jogging. Neuromuscular changes in the lower extremity occur while resisting knee and hip joint moments following isolated lumbar paraspinal exercise. Persons with a history of LBP seem to rely more heavily on quadriceps activity while jogging.  相似文献
