Demersal fish were sampled over 3 years to describe sealworm Pseudoterranova decipiens infection levels in relation to the size of a local colony of common seals Phoca vitulina in Hvaler, Oslofjord, Norway. More than 2000 fish were examined for worms, and five fish species were found to be infected, cod Gadus morhua , four-bearded rockling Enchelyopus cimbrius , plaice Pleuronectes platessa , long rough dab Hippoglossoides platessoides and dab Limanda limanda. A detailed analysis of worm accumulation in cod, the only infected species present in large enough numbers, shows a net decrease in worm transmission following the phocine distemper virus epizootic which killed two-thirds of the seals in Hvaler in 1988.  相似文献

In order to analyse the occurrence of viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in the marine waters around Denmark, staff from the Danish Institute for Food and Veterinary Research participated in 5 research cruises during 1998 to 2002 as a follow-up to 4 research cruises performed in 1996 to 1997. In total, 16,655 fish were examined virologically as 3569 samples. Forty fish species and 3 invertebrate species were represented. VHSV was isolated from 133 samples representing 8 species: herring Clupea harengus, sprat Sprattus sprattus, dab Limanda limanda, flounder Platichthys flesus, plaice Pleuronectes platessa, cod Gadus morhua, sand eel Ammodytes sp. and sand goby Pomatochistus minutus. Calculations showed that VHSV was more prevalent in the Baltic Sea in an area between Zealand and the island of Bornholm and the waters surrounding Bornholm than in the Kattegat, Skagerrak and along the North Sea coast of Denmark. This is the first report on the isolation of VHSV from dab, flounder and plaice and the first publication on VHSV from sand eel from Europe and sand goby.  相似文献

Karyotypic analysis of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and cod, Gadus morhua L., revealed that the chromosome numbers in both species vary but that chromosome arm numbers (NF) stay constant. The C-, Q- and R-banding patterns also confirmed that the population of plaice studied shows Robertsonian polymorphism. The tendency of reduction in chromosome number in fishes suggests that Robertsonian fusions play a role in karyotype evolution in fishes.  相似文献

The abstraction of cooling water at power stations sited on tidal waters inevitably leads to mortalities of some fish which are drawn in with the cooling water supply and become impinged on the intake screens. These fish are predominantly 0- or I-group juveniles which, owing to their small size, are unable to resist intake currents.
Commercial fishermen often object to the fact that juvenile fish are killed in this way. Their concern stems from the fact that, in order to protect stocks, commercial fishing is restricted to fish which are above a statutory minimum landing size, whereas the majority of fish killed by impingement are below this size.
This paper considers the significance of impingement mortalities at estuarine sites in Britain for six commercially important species: cod, Gadus morhua , whiting, Merlangius merlangus , plaice, Pleuronectes platessa , dab, Limanda limanda , sole, Solea solea and herring, Clupea harengus . Life tables are used to establish expected survival trajectories for each species and to compute reproductive potential. Each fish killed on intake screens is then considered in terms of the fraction of the reproductive potential of a single adult at maturity, and is ascribed an 'adult equivalent' value. Total catches of mixed juveniles and adults are then presented as 'adult equivalent' values. The results are then compared with commercial landings data and it is shown that catches by power stations are trivial in comparison with commercial landings.  相似文献

Juvenile plaice, Pleuronectes platessa ( n =6, 151–197 mm SL) and dab Limanda limanda ( n =6, 119–180.5 mm SL) feeding on pieces of mussel flesh were studied by high-speed (200 fields s−1) videophotography at 11) C. Prey capture cycles (involving jaw protrusion and opercular expansion) were described in both species. The capture cycle was followed by at least one cycle (similar to the capture cycle in all respects except food intake) which is believed to transport food to the oesophagus. The transport cycle (or cycles) was followed by a species-specific number of normal respiratory cycles (7 or 8 in plaice, 11 or 12 in dab) and a final single cycle when food debris was violently ejected from the opercular cavity. The respiratory cycles and ejection cycle cleansed the orobranchial/opercular cavities and gills. Differences between the species were relatively minor, but plaice captured and transported food more quickly than dab.  相似文献

To assess the feeding habits of plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., and dab, Limanda limanda (L.), within Carmarthen Bay, three sampling techniques were used: benthic trawling and surf-zone push-netting were undertaken during the feeding season for the gut contents of plaice and dab (age groups 0-IV) and of 0-group brill, Scophthalmus rhombus , to be analysed in detail, and a benthic macro-fauna grab survey covered the trawled ground to assess the distribution of food species in relation to gut contents. Plaice consumed commonly-occurring food species whereas dab took any available food. The main items were the same for both species, but secondary food preferences differed. Variations in gut contents within species, for the same sized fish, chiefly resulted from the spatial distribution of fish and not seasonal variations in the benthic macro-fauna. The length and not the age of fish primarily determined the selection of food organisms.  相似文献

The food composition of O-group sole Solea solea , dab Limanda limanda and plaice Pleuronectes platessa on a nursery ground at Gravelines, France, included 17–25 taxa. Sole (new settlers) fed mainly on harpacticoid copepods and when 50 mm in size, on polychaetes (Terebellidae). Dab (<40 mm) consumed mainly polychaetes (Magelonidae and Spionidae), and later amphipods, polychaetes (Spionidae) and Hydrozoa. O-group plaice diet was dominated by polychaetes (Terebellidae), crustaceans and molluscs at all sizes. O-group sole, dab and plaice did not compete for food resources, each species being specialized in different prey items. Growth rates during May-July 1998 varied between 0·5 and 0·67 mm day−1 for sole, 0·12 and 0·24 mm day−1 for dab and 0·55 and 0·81 mm day−1 for plaice. For sole and plaice, these estimates were similar to those recorded in other nurseries and also close to the maximal growth predicted by experimental models. This suggests that their growth was not limited by food during the first summer of life.  相似文献

Predation encounters were staged in the laboratory to compare prey responsiveness, predator error rate, and predator capture success for juvenile cod Gadus morhua (a suction feeder) and herring Clupea harengus (a biting predator) preying on herring and plaice Pleuronectes platessa larvae. Trials were conducted at near natural temperature extremes for the larvae (8 and 13°C) to assess the importance of water temperature to the interaction. Herring larvae were significantly more responsive to attacks by herring than were plaice larvae (5·7 vs 0'0%). The two prey species were equally responsive to attacks by cod (2–6 vs 10%). Cod caught 91% of herring larvae attacked and juvenile herring caught 87%. Cod were successful in 96% of attacks on plaice, but juvenile herring caught significantly fewer (83%) plaice larvae. For each predator species, capture success did not vary significantly with prey species. Overall capture success for herring was significantly lower than that for cod. Responsiveness of herring larvae to attacks by juvenile herring increased with temperature, but predator error rate and capture success were not altered by water temperature.  相似文献

Rates of predation on 0-group plaice, Pleuronectes platessa . in aquaria were compared under four different combinations of conditions to test the hypothesis that the presence of sand in which they may bury affords a refuge from predators. The effect of light and darkness on predation rate was also examined, Two crustaceans, the shrimp, Crangon crangon , and the portunid crab, Liocarcinus holatus , and two fishes, cod, Gadus morhua , and pollack, Pollachius pollachius , were used as predators. Predaton rates were significantly higher in the dark for all predators except pollack. Predation rates in the absence of sand were signifcantly greater only for pollack. The results suggest that predation rates on plaice during their juvenile nursery stage on sandy beaches will be significantly greater during darkness than during the day. Burying in sand appears to provide only a partial refuge from predation, perhaps because natural predators have evolved effective methods of foraging for buried prey.  相似文献

The relationship between whole blood-oxygen affinity (P(50)) and pH-dependent binding (i.e., cooperativity and the Bohr [ Phi ] and Root effects) was examined statistically under standardized conditions (10.0 degrees Celsius) in four unrelated cold-temperate marine fishes that differ widely in their swimming performance and their expected responses to hypoxia: cod (Gadus morhua), herring (Clupea harengus), mackerel (Scomber scombrus), and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). An unexpected difference in blood-oxygen affinity was found (herring>plaice>mackerel>cod), and this was independent of both swimming performance and the predicted low O(2) response of each species. The ecotype of the four marine species was also unrelated to pH-dependent binding because no difference in the Bohr effect was apparent ( Phi varied insignificantly from -0.90 to -1.06), and differences in the magnitude of the cooperative binding reaction were associated only with the presence of the Root effect. Although several reviews propose a generalized link between blood-oxygen affinity and pH-dependent binding, our results advise against overestimating the adaptive functional properties of hemoglobin across unrelated species.  相似文献

In cod, Gadus morhua L., calcium levels expressed as percentage of tissue dry weight were (mean +/- SD) 0.0042 +/- 0.0010% of ovary before final maturation and 0.0133 +/- 0.0024% of mature eggs. In plaice Pleuronectes platessa L. these values were 0.0029 +/- 0.0006 and 0.0097 +/- 0.0001. In mature eggs of both fish species these values are at least one order of magnitude less than in the yolk of the domestic fowl Gallus domesticus L. (0.14% of dry weight). The corresponding values for iron were (2.31 +/- 0.22) X 10(-3)% of ovary and (3.07 +/- 0.29) X 10(-3)% of mature egg in cod. In plaice these values were (1.57 +/- 0.15) X 10(-3)% and (2.74 +/- 0.94) X 10(-3)%. These levels are 4-7 times less than in the yolk of the domestic fowl (0.012-0.020%). These differences between the mature pelagic eggs of marine teleosts and the eggs of other oviparous vertebrates appear to be related to the availability of these elements in sea water, the different nature of the yolk phosphoprotein and the lower levels of protein phosphorus in the eggs of these fish species.  相似文献

The settlement and growth conditions of three 0-group flatfish species, sole (Solea solea L.), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) and dab (Limanda limanda L.) in the Bay of Canche, French coast of the Eastern English Channel, were investigated during summer 1997. 0-group dab were the more abundant of the three species (75.4%) followed by plaice (21%) and sole (3.6%). Analyses of fish size distribution indicated that settlement of plaice occurred before sole and dab. Growth of sole was faster than that of plaice, which in turn was faster than that of dab (0.68, 0.43 and 0.33 mm d?1 respectively). Sole differed from plaice and dab by their larger mean length attained at the end of their first summer stay in the nursery ground. Growth performances of 0-group sole and plaice were analysed by comparing estimated growth in the field with predicted maximum growth according to temperature-growth rate models from experimental studies of growth with unlimited food supply. The data of this study suggest that plaice growth may have been limited during late summer, whereas sole growth does appear to have been determined only by water temperature.  相似文献

Synopsis Plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, and dab, Limanda limanda, were sampled with a Glommen lobster trawl at 25 to 40 m depth in the SE Kattegat during spring and autumn of 1984 to 1990. During autumn, hypoxia (O2-concentration < 3 mg I–1) occurred in the bottom water below the halocline for four to ten weeks every year, except in 1984 when moderate hypoxia (O2-concentration 3–5 mg 1–1) occurred. Biomass of both species was shown to be negatively correlated with oxygen concentration during autumn. Further, a decrease in population mean total length was observed during the study period in both spring and autumn samples. Laboratory studies of growth of juvenile plaice and dab, at 15° C and 30–34%, showed that growth is reduced at 50 and 30% O2-saturation for both species during a 20 d period. There was some adaptation to hypoxia resulting in less reduction of growth during the second half of the experiment. The frequency of fish eating was reduced in plaice at 30% O2-saturation. Reduced mean total length of the plaice and dab population of the SE Kattegat is discussed in view of sublethal effects of oxygen deficiency.  相似文献

The concept of habitat selection based on 'Ideal Free Distribution' theory suggests that areas of high suitability may attract larger quantities of fishes than less suitable or unsuitable areas. Catch data were used from groundfish surveys to identify areas of consistently high densities of whiting Merlangius merlangus , cod Gadus morhua and haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus in the Irish Sea and plaice Pleuronectes platessa , sole Solea solea , lemon sole Microstomus kitt in the English Channel over a period of 10 and 9 years respectively. A method was introduced to delineate areas of the seabed that held consistently high numbers of fishes objectively from large datasets. These areas may constitute important habitat characteristics which may merit further scientific investigations in respect to 'Essential Fish Habitats'(EFH). In addition, the number of stations with consistently high abundances of fishes and the number of stations where no fishes were caught gave an indication of the site specificity of the fish species analysed. For the gadoids, whiting was found to be less site specific than cod and haddock, while for the flatfishes, plaice and sole were less site specific than lemon sole. The findings are discussed in the context of previously published studies on dietary specializm. The site specificity of demersal fishes has implications for the siting process for marine protected areas as fish species with a strong habitat affinity can be expected to benefit more from such management schemes.  相似文献

The fish community of the Forth estuary, Scotland, has several components — estuarine resident species, diadromus migratory species, marine and freshwater adventitious species, marine juvenile migrants using the area as a nursery, and adults of marine species with seasonal migrations. The population changes during the period 1981–1988 in six species representative of the last two categories are described here. The species are the juvenile gadoids, whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.) and cod, Gadus morhua L., juvenile flatfish, plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L. and common dab, Limanda limanda (L.), and the adult clupeids, sprat, Sprattus sprattus (L.) and herring, Clupea harengus L.The species' population changes are described in relation to aspects of wider significance such as commercial fishing for these species in North Sea areas. In particular, the underlying decline of the juvenile cod populations since 1981 in the Forth Estuary is discussed in relation to the recent reduction in commercial fishing quotas.  相似文献

The diameters, dry weights and calorific value of the eggs of seven gadoid species (cod, Gadus morhua , haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus , whiting, Merlangius merlangus , Norway pout, Trisopterus esmarkii , lythe. Pollachius pollachius , saithe, P. virens , ling. Molva molva ) and one pleuronectid (plaice, Pleuronectes platessa ) were measured. Ling eggs contain an oil globule; the eggs of the other species do not.
Preservation in formaldehyde solution caused a small (<4%) reduction in egg diameter but a large (15–30%) reduction in dry weight. There was no significant difference between the dry weights of unpreserved eggs weighed after (a) oven-drying at 60° C or (b) freeze-drying. Equations relating the dry weight of unpreserved eggs to unpreserved diameter and to preserved diameter are given for six species, and general equations that may apply to all North Sea gadoids whose eggs lack an oil globule are calculated. The calorific values of the dried, unpreserved eggs of all species except ling were similar (mean 23.19 kJ g−1, S.D. 1.50) but the value for ling was higher (mean 26.92 kJ g−1, S.D. 2.29). The estimated energy content (kJ 1000 eggs−1) of eggs of each species are tabulated.  相似文献

Mature specimens of Cucullanus heterochrous Rudolphi, 1802 (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) were obtained from the intestine of the flounder, Platichthys flesus, from Danish waters. Eggs embryonate in seawater but do not hatch. Fully developed larvae pressed out of eggs are 430 microm long with amphids and dereids and enclosed within the cuticle of a previous larval stage. Infective larvae are believed to be in their third stage. Experimental studies showed that the polychaetes, Nereis spp., Scoloplos armiger, Brada villosa and Capitella sp., may act as intermediate hosts. In N. diversicolor the larvae increase their length to 1 mm within four weeks (15 degrees C) without moulting. Experimental infections showed that larvated eggs are not infective to fish, whereas >550 microm long larvae from polychaetes survived in 4-24 cm long flounders and plaice, Pleuronectes platessa. Third-stage larvae 550 microm to 1.1 mm long were found in the submucosa of the intestine one week post infection. At a length of about 800 microm to 1.4 mm they moult to fourth-stage larvae. Fourth-stage larvae, immature and mature worms occur in the intestine and rectum. Fourth-stage larvae and adults survived experimental transfer from one flounder to another. Similar developmental stages survived for two weeks in the intestine of experimentally infected cod, Gadus morhua.  相似文献

Summary 1. About twenty-five species of fish occur in Red Wharf Bay; plaice, dabs and gobies predominate in the beam-trawl catches. 0-group plaice comprise about 70% of the catch in a push-net at low-water mark.2. The 0-group plaice first arrive in late April or May and recruitment continues into July or August. In the succeeding months, the mortality rate is about 40% per month. 0-group dabs arrive in June and their monthly mortality rate is about 44%.3. Growth rate of plaice and dabs is high in summer but low from November to April.4. The food of the earliest 0-group plaice differed from year to year and included both plankton and benthos.5. Pairs of fish species having similar feeding habits could be discerned but one of each pair had a wider depth distribution than the other. Plaice and dabs had similar diets but, when examined in detail, differences were apparent.6. Marking experiments indicated that, in summer and autumn, O-group plaice tended to keep to their own part of the bay and that, if transported offshore, they returned to the shallow-water areas.

Kurzfassung Ökologische Aspekte und qualitative Gesichtspunkte der Ernährung vonPleuronectes platessa undLimanda limanda aus der Red Wharf Bucht wurden untersucht. Die jungen Schollen treten in der Bucht in der Zeit von April bis Juli (oder August) auf; von August bis zum Winter beträgt die monatliche Verlustquote ungefähr 40%. Zunächst ist die Verbreitung der Jungfische auf die Ebbe-Linie beschränkt. Jungfische der Kliesche erscheinen von Juni an; ihre Verlustrate beträgt ungefähr 44% pro Monat. Im Sommer wachsen die beiden Arten schnell; in der Zeit von November bis April ist die Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit jedoch verringert. Bei Arten mit ähnlichem Nahrungsverhalten wurden Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Tiefenverteilung festgestellt, so daß sich die Areale der Arten nur teilweise überdecken. Die Klieschen haben ein Nahrungsspektrum, das dem der Schollen aus der 0-Gruppe ähnelt, doch bestehen, wie eingehende Untersuchungen gezeigt haben, bestimmte Unterschiede. Sowohl Schollen als auch Klieschen der 0-Gruppe wurden von anderen Tieren, vor allem Artgenossen (Tiere der I-Gruppe), gefressen. Markierungsexperimente zeigten, daß Jungschollen der 0-Gruppe — zumindest im Sommer und Herbst — in das flachere Wasser zurückkehren, nachdem sie markiert und in tieferes Wasser ausgesetzt worwaren.

Zusammenfassung 1. Die Eier von Dorsch (Gadus morhua L.), Flunder (Pleuronectes flesus L.) und Scholle (Pleuronectes platessa L.) der westlichen Ostsee wurden unter kombinierten Salzgehalts-Temperaturbedingungen (0°–16° C, 7–42 S) erbrütet. Es wurde untersucht, inwieweit die Embryonalentwicklung durch das Zusammenwirken von Temperatur und Salzgehalt beeinflußt wird.2. Die optimalen Temperatur- und Salzgehaltsbereiche für die Erbrütung von Dorsch, Flunder und Scholle wurden festgestellt. Für den Dorsch konnten drei Versuche mit unterschiedlichem Material durchgeführt werden. Die optimalen Temperaturund Salzgehaltskombinationen für die Erbrütung von Dorscheiern betrugen: (a) 6°–8° C bei 25–30 S, (b) 4° C bei 20–33 S und (c) 4°–6° C bei 33 S. Für die Flundereier wurde als optimale Temperatur-Salzgehaltskombination 4° C und 33 S gefunden. Die untersuchten Scholleneier entwickelten sich bei 6° C und 20 S am besten.3. In nicht-optimalen Temperatur- und Salzgehaltsbereichen war ein Absinken der Überlebensrate und verstärktes Auftreten morphologischer Anomalien an Embryonen und Larven zu verzeichnen. Als charakteristische Schädigungen traten Verkrümmungen der caudalen Körperregion auf. Larven, die in schwach salzigem Wasser gehalten wurden (20 und 15 S), litten an Dottersackquellung, was bei den Flunderlarven zu Kieferdeformationen führte.4. Als wahrscheinliche Ursache für die Verkrümmungen und Verwachsungen des Schwanzes wurde ein durch extreme Temperaturen allgemein gestörtes Zusammenwirken der Enzyme diskutiert.5. Die Wirkung hoher und niedriger Salzgehalte wurde in der Diskussion auf eine Störung im embryonalen Stoffwechsel zurückgeführt, die durch Änderung im Ionenmilieu der Zelle hervorgerufen wird.6. Mit zunehmender Aussüßung des Erbrütungswassers konnte bei allen untersuchten Eiern Entwicklungsverlangsamung beobachtet werden. Bei hohen Erbrütungstemperaturen wurden die Unterschiede in der Entwicklungsgeschwindigkeit geringer.7. Der für die Erbrütung optimale Salzgehalt änderte sich in Abhängigkeit von der Inkubationstemperatur. Ebenfalls war die optimale Erbrütungstemperatur in Abhängigkeit vom Salzgehalt des Erbrütungsmediums veränderlich. Extrem niedrige Salzgehalte (15 und 20 S) wurden im Bereich der Optimaltemperaturen oder bei niedrigen Temperaturen besser ertragen.8. Bei allen drei untersuchten Fischarten wurde das Auftreten von Brackwasserrassen in der Ostsee erörtert und für wahrscheinlich gehalten.
Rearing the eggs of cod(Gadus morhua), flounder(Pleuronectes flesus) and plaice(Pleuronectes platessa) under combined temperature and salinity conditions
Eggs of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.), flounder (Pleuronectes flesus L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) have been reared under combined temperature and salinity conditions (0°–16° C, 7–42 S). Combined temperature and salinity influences on embryonic development were investigated. Optimum temperatures for the rearing of cod eggs range from 4° to 8° C, and optimum salinities from 20 to 33 S. Flounder eggs develop best at 4° C and in 33 S, and plaice eggs at 6° C and in 20 S. Suboptimum conditions result in lower percentages of larval hatching and survival, and increased morphological anomalies such as curvature of tail and body. Low salinities (20 and 15 S) cause swollen yolk sacs which, in experiments with flounder eggs, lead to jaw deformities. Rearing at low salinity decreases speed of development. Optimum salinity varies as a function of incubation temperature and influences variations in optimum rearing temperature. Extremely low salinities (20 and 15 S) are tolerated best at optimum or lower temperatures. From the results of these experiments it can be concluded that brackish water races of these fishes are likely to exist in the Baltic Sea.

Oxygen uptake by plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L ., was measured using both 'closed' and 'flow-through' respirometers. Oxygen consumption was found to be influenced by oxygen concentrations below a critical level of 45–60 mmHg. Rates of oxygen uptake were also affected by fish size, temperature and nutritional status. The problems involved in using values of oxygen consumption, determined in the laboratory, for estimating energy requirements of wild fish are discussed.  相似文献
