Understanding the spatial variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) must be enhanced to improve sampling design and to develop soil management strategies in terrestrial ecosystems. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex Houz.) forests have a high SOC storage potential; however, they also vary significantly spatially. This study investigated the spatial variability of SOC (0-20 cm) in association with other soil properties and with spatial variables in the Moso bamboo forests of Jian’ou City, which is a typical bamboo hometown in China. 209 soil samples were collected from Moso bamboo stands and then analyzed for SOC, bulk density (BD), pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and gravel content (GC) based on spatial distribution. The spatial variability of SOC was then examined using geostatistics. A Kriging map was produced through ordinary interpolation and required sample numbers were calculated by classical and Kriging methods. An aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analysis was also conducted. A semivariogram analysis indicated that ln(SOC) was best fitted with an exponential model and that it exhibited moderate spatial dependence, with a nugget/sill ratio of 0.462. SOC was significantly and linearly correlated with BD (r = −0.373**), pH (r = −0.429**), GC (r = −0.163*), CEC (r = 0.263**), and elevation (r = 0.192**). Moreover, the Kriging method requires fewer samples than the classical method given an expected standard error level as per a variance analysis. ABT analysis indicated that the physicochemical variables of soil affected SOC variation more significantly than spatial variables did, thus suggesting that the SOC in Moso bamboo forests can be strongly influenced by management practices. Thus, this study provides valuable information in relation to sampling strategy and insight into the potential of adjustments in agronomic measure, such as in fertilization for Moso bamboo production.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fixed by termites was evaluated as a N input to decomposition processes in two tropical forests, a dry deciduous forest (DDF) and the neighboring dry evergreen forest (DEF), Thailand. A diverse group of termite species were assayed by acetylene reduction method and only the wood/litter-feeding termites were found to fix N. More intensive samplings of two abundant species, Microcerotermes crassus and Globitermes sulphureus, were done across several seasons, suggesting N fixation rates of 0.21 and 0.28 kg ha−1 y−1 by termites in the DDF and DEF, respectively. Also, estimates of asymbiotic N fixation rates were 0.75 and 3.95 kg ha−1 y−1. N fixed by termites and by asymbiotic fixers is directly supplied to decomposers breaking down dead plant material and could be a major source of their N. N fixed by termites was 7–22% of that fixed by termites and asymbiotic fixers. Although N fixed by termites is a small input compared to other inputs, this N is likely important for decomposition processes.  相似文献

Carbon (C) occluded in phytolith (PhytOC) is a stable form of C; when PhytOC is returned to the soil through litterfall it is stored in the soil which can be an effective way for long-term C sequestration. However, few estimates on the rate of PhytOC input to the soil are available. To better understand the seasonal dynamics of PhytOC production and the annual rate of stable C sequestration through PhytOC input, we quantified the monthly litterfall, phytolith and PhytOC return to the soil over a year in a typical Lei bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) forest in subtropical China. The monthly litterfall ranged between 14.81 and 131.18 g m−2, and the phytolith concentration in the monthly litterfall samples ranged between 47.21 and 101.68 g kg−1 of litter mass, with the PhytOC concentration in the phytolith ranged between 29.4 and 44.9 g kg−1 of phytolith, equivalent to 1.8–3.6 g kg−1 of PhytOC in the litterfall (based on litterfall dry mass). The amount of phytolith input to the soil system was 292.21±69.12 (mean±SD) kg ha−1 yr−1, sequestering 41.45±9.32 kg CO2−e ha−1 yr−1 of C in the studied Lei bamboo forest. This rate of C sequestration through the formation of PhytOC found in this study falls within the range of rates for other grass-type species reported in the literature. We conclude that return of C occluded in phytolith to the soil can be a substantial source of stable soil C and finding means to increase PhytOC storage in the soil should be able to play a significant role in mitigating the rapidly increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration.  相似文献

To study the temporal and spatial dynamics of carbon fixation by Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) in subtropical China, carbon fixation of leaves within the canopy of P. pubescens was measured with a LI-6400 portable photosynthesis system. The results showed that the capability of carbon fixation of P. pubescens leaves had obvious temporal and spatial dynamic variations. It was revealed that there were two peak periods and two low periods in the season variation of carbon fixation capability. Data also revealed that the capability of carbon fixation by five-year-old P. pubescens was more than that of one-year-old and three-year-old. Daily and seasonal carbon fixation showed a negative correlation with the CO2 concentration. The temporal and spatial dynamics of carbon fixation by P. pubescens described above provided a scientific basis for development of technologies in bamboo timber production.  相似文献

Mangrove forests cover large areas of tropical and subtropical coastlines. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services that includes carbon storage in above- and below ground biomass and in soils. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from soil, or soil respiration is important in the global carbon budget and is sensitive to increasing global temperature. To understand the magnitude of mangrove soil respiration and the influence of forest structure and temperature on the variation in mangrove soil respiration I assessed soil respiration at eleven mangrove sites, ranging from latitude 27°N to 37°S. Mangrove soil respiration was similar to those observed for terrestrial forest soils. Soil respiration was correlated with leaf area index (LAI) and aboveground net primary production (litterfall), which should aid scaling up to regional and global estimates of soil respiration. Using a carbon balance model, total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA) per unit litterfall was similar in tall mangrove forests as observed in terrestrial forests, but in scrub mangrove forests TBCA per unit litter fall was greater than in terrestrial forests, suggesting mangroves allocate a large proportion of their fixed carbon below ground under unfavorable environmental conditions. The response of soil respiration to soil temperature was not a linear function of temperature. At temperatures below 26°C Q10 of mangrove soil respiration was 2.6, similar to that reported for terrestrial forest soils. However in scrub forests soil respiration declined with increasing soil temperature, largely because of reduced canopy cover and enhanced activity of photosynthetic benthic microbial communities.  相似文献

An infrared gas analyzer was operated in an open-circuit differential mode to measure CO2 gas exchange in intact leafy and leafless parts of skeletal branches of Pinus sylvestris L. throughout the summer daylight period. The photosynthetic carbon sequestration in major types of forest phytocenoses in northern Eurasia was assessed for middle-aged and moderately dense stands. The estimates were corrected for carbon losses associated with phloem transport of photosynthetic products per each meter of transport pathway (14 kg C/(kg chlorophyll m)), as well as for respiratory losses of heterotrophic phytomass. A high correlation (R2 = 0.82) was found between this component of production process in the current growth season and the chlorophyll index for major forest associations of northern Eurasia. It is concluded that the transport-related carbon losses of photosynthetic products in the phloem over the current growth period (1100 h) enlarge significantly as the mean stand height increases during the tree growth and upon the regional shift from north to south.  相似文献

Across the tropics, there is a growing financial investment in activities that aim to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, such as REDD+. However, most tropical countries lack on-the-ground capacity to conduct reliable and replicable assessments of forest carbon stocks, undermining their ability to secure long-term carbon finance for forest conservation programs. Clear guidance on how to reduce the monetary and time costs of field assessments of forest carbon can help tropical countries to overcome this capacity gap. Here we provide such guidance for cost-effective one-off field assessments of forest carbon stocks. We sampled a total of eight components from four different carbon pools (i.e. aboveground, dead wood, litter and soil) in 224 study plots distributed across two regions of eastern Amazon. For each component we estimated survey costs, contribution to total forest carbon stocks and sensitivity to disturbance. Sampling costs varied thirty-one-fold between the most expensive component, soil, and the least, leaf litter. Large live stems (≥10 cm DBH), which represented only 15% of the overall sampling costs, was by far the most important component to be assessed, as it stores the largest amount of carbon and is highly sensitive to disturbance. If large stems are not taxonomically identified, costs can be reduced by a further 51%, while incurring an error in aboveground carbon estimates of only 5% in primary forests, but 31% in secondary forests. For rapid assessments, necessary to help prioritize locations for carbon- conservation activities, sampling of stems ≥20cm DBH without taxonomic identification can predict with confidence (R2 = 0.85) whether an area is relatively carbon-rich or carbon-poor—an approach that is 74% cheaper than sampling and identifying all the stems ≥10cm DBH. We use these results to evaluate the reliability of forest carbon stock estimates provided by the IPCC and FAO when applied to human-modified forests, and to highlight areas where cost savings in carbon stock assessments could be most easily made.  相似文献

The boreal forest plays a critical role in regulating global atmospheric carbon dioxide and is highly influenced by wildfire. However, the long-term recovery of forest carbon (C) storage following wildfire remains unclear, especially during late succession. Uncertainty surrounding C storage in old forests largely stems from both a lack of repeated measurements in forest stands older than the longevity of the pioneer cohort and a lack of consideration of multiple succession pathways. In this study, we constructed a replicated chronosequence, which covered a wide range of forest stand age classes (up to 210 years old) following fire in the boreal forest of central Canada. We selected stands of different overstorey types (that is, broadleaf, conifer, or mixedwood) and age classes to account for multiple succession pathways known to occur in our study area. Our results show a strong relationship between total ecosystem C storage and stand age following fire. Broadleaf stands had on average higher total ecosystem C; however, the inferred temporal dynamics of total ecosystem C were similar among all three overstorey types. Importantly, we found that total ecosystem C storage declined from canopy transition to late-succession stages, irrespective of succession pathway, contradicting views that old forests continually accumulate C as they age. Our findings emphasize that further study of stands older than the longevity of the pioneer cohort is critical to better understand the contribution of old forests to the global C cycle.  相似文献

The non-heterocystous filamentous cyanobacterium Plectonema boryanum UTEX 594 grew rapidly microaerobically under nitrogen-starvation conditions in continuous high light intensity by conducting oxygenic photosynthesis and oxygen sensitive nitrogen-fixation in alternating cycles. During diazotrophic phase, the light harvesting pigment phycocyanin declined with a concomitant depression in light dependent oxygen evolution by the cyanobacterium. A substantial component of light dependent carbon dioxide fixation during diazotrophic phase was not inhibited by DCMU in spite of complete cessation of photosynthetic oxygen evolution. Endogenous-reductant dependent electron transfer to photosystem I during diazotrophic phase is postulated even during photoautotrophic growth.  相似文献

Humid tropical forests are often characterized by large nitrogen (N) pools, and are known to have large potential N losses. Although rarely measured, tropical forests likely maintain considerable biological N fixation (BNF) to balance N losses. We estimated inputs of N via BNF by free-living microbes for two tropical forests in Puerto Rico, and assessed the response to increased N availability using an on-going N fertilization experiment. Nitrogenase activity was measured across forest strata, including the soil, forest floor, mosses, canopy epiphylls, and lichens using acetylene (C2H2) reduction assays. BNF varied significantly among ecosystem compartments in both forests. Mosses had the highest rates of nitrogenase activity per gram of sample, with 11 ± 6 nmol C2H2 reduced/g dry weight/h (mean ± SE) in a lower elevation forest, and 6 ± 1 nmol C2H2/g/h in an upper elevation forest. We calculated potential N fluxes via BNF to each forest compartment using surveys of standing stocks. Soils and mosses provided the largest potential inputs of N via BNF to these ecosystems. Summing all components, total background BNF inputs were 120 ± 29 μg N/m2/h in the lower elevation forest, and 95 ± 15 μg N/m2/h in the upper elevation forest, with added N significantly suppressing BNF in soils and forest floor. Moisture content was significantly positively correlated with BNF rates for soils and the forest floor. We conclude that BNF is an active biological process across forest strata for these tropical forests, and is likely to be sensitive to increases in N deposition in tropical regions.  相似文献

The Roseobacter clade of aerobic marine proteobacteria, which compose 10–25% of the total marine bacterial community, has been reported to fix CO2, although it has not been determined what pathway is involved. In this study, we report the first metabolic studies on carbohydrate utilization, CO2 assimilation, and amino acid biosynthesis in the phototrophic Roseobacter clade bacterium Roseobacter denitrificans OCh114. We develop a new minimal medium containing defined carbon source(s), in which the requirements of yeast extract reported previously for the growth of R. denitrificans can be replaced by vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). Tracer experiments were carried out in R. denitrificans grown in a newly developed minimal medium containing isotopically labeled pyruvate, glucose or bicarbonate as a single carbon source or in combination. Through measurements of 13C-isotopomer labeling patterns in protein-derived amino acids, gene expression profiles, and enzymatic activity assays, we report that: (1) R. denitrificans uses the anaplerotic pathways mainly via the malic enzyme to fix 10–15% of protein carbon from CO2; (2) R. denitrificans employs the Entner-Doudoroff (ED) pathway for carbohydrate metabolism and the non-oxidative pentose phosphate pathway for the biosynthesis of histidine, ATP, and coenzymes; (3) the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas (EMP, glycolysis) pathway is not active and the enzymatic activity of 6-phosphofructokinase (PFK) cannot be detected in R. denitrificans; and (4) isoleucine can be synthesized from both threonine-dependent (20% total flux) and citramalate-dependent (80% total flux) pathways using pyruvate as the sole carbon source.  相似文献

Close to redox boundaries, dark carbon fixation by chemoautotrophic bacteria may be a large contributor to overall carbon fixation. Still, little is known about the relative importance of this process in lake systems, in spite the potentially high chemoautotrophic potential of lake sediments. We compared rates of dark carbon fixation, bacterial production and oxygen consumption in sediments from four Swedish boreal and seven tropical Brazilian lakes. Rates were highly variable and dark carbon fixation amounted up to 80% of the total heterotrophic bacterial production. The results indicate that non-photosynthetic carbon fixation can represent a substantial contribution to bacterial biomass production, especially in sediments with low organic matter content.  相似文献

Dark respiration rate increased with temperature between 10and 24°C (Q10 =2.3–2.7). The rate of gross dark CO2fixation (GDF) was affected by temperature, but irregularly.Cumulative GDF was not affected by temperature in this range.Cumulative respiration increased from 17 per cent of cumulativeGDF at 10°C, to 72 per cent at 24°C and was thus responsiblefor the 65 per cent drop in net dark fixation between thesetwo temperatures. and respiration rates were functions of the light intensityin the preceding light period. The function for cumulativeGDFwas of the saturation form, maximum accumulation being obtainedat 12 mW cm–2. It is concluded that both GDF and respirationrates depend on levels of substrates formed during the lightperiod. However, the rate of GDF did not appear to be directlyrelated to the rate of respiration.  相似文献

The effects of CO2 concentration and illumination on net gas exchange and the pathway of 14CO2 fixation in detached seeds from developing fruits of Lupinus albus (L.) have been studied.

Increasing the CO2 concentration in the surrounding atmosphere (from 0.03 to 3.0% [v/v] in air) decreased CO2 efflux by detached seeds either exposed to the light flux equivalent to that transmitted by the pod wall (500 to 600 micro-Einsteins per square meter per second) in full sunlight or held in darkness. Above 1% CO2 detached seeds made a net gain of CO2 in the light (up to 0.4 milligrams of CO2 fixed per gram fresh weight per hour) but 14CO2 injected into the gas space of intact fruits (containing around 1.5% CO2 naturally) was fixed mainly by the pod and little by the seeds.

Throughout development seeds contained ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity (EC 4.1.1.39), especially in the embryo (up to 99 micromoles of CO2 fixed per gram fresh weight per hour) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.31) in both testa (up to 280 micromoles of CO2 fixed per gram fresh weight per hour) and embryo (up to 355 micromoles of CO2 fixed per gram fresh weight per hour).

In kinetic experiments the most significant early formed product of 14CO2 fixation in both light and dark was malate but in the light phosphoglyceric acid and sugar phosphates were also rapidly labeled. 14CO2 fixation in the light was linked to the synthesis of sugars and amino acids but in the dark labeled sugars were not formed.

Nitrogen (N) fixation in the feather moss–cyanobacteria association represents a major N source in boreal forests which experience low levels of N deposition; however, little is known about the effects of anthropogenic N inputs on the rate of fixation of atmospheric N2 in mosses and the succeeding effects on soil nutrient concentrations and microbial community composition. We collected soil samples and moss shoots of Pleurozium schreberi at six distances along busy and remote roads in northern Sweden to assess the influence of road-derived N inputs on N2 fixation in moss, soil nutrient concentrations and microbial communities. Soil nutrients were similar between busy and remote roads; N2 fixation was higher in mosses along the remote roads than along the busy roads and increased with increasing distance from busy roads up to rates of N2 fixation similar to remote roads. Throughfall N was higher in sites adjacent to the busy roads but showed no distance effect. Soil microbial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition exhibited a weak pattern regarding road type. Concentrations of bacterial and total PLFAs decreased with increasing distance from busy roads, whereas fungal PLFAs showed no distance effect. Our results show that N2 fixation in feather mosses is highly affected by N deposition, here derived from roads in northern Sweden. Moreover, as other measured factors showed only weak differences between the road types, atmospheric N2 fixation in feather mosses represents a highly sensitive indicator for increased N loads to natural systems.  相似文献

After growth on various carbon sources, sonic extracts of Hydrogenomonas facilis contained ribulosediphosphate (RuDP) carboxylase and phosphoribulokinase (Ru5-P kinase). After very short sonic treatment, a reductive adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-dependent incorporation of (14)CO(2) was also detectable. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH(2)) served as reductant 30-fold more effectively than reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH(2)). Adenosine 5'-phosphate (AMP) and adenosine 5'-pyrophosphate (ADP) inhibited Ru5-P kinase and NADH(2)-, ATP-dependent CO(2) fixation. The levels and duration of CO(2) fixation suggested that it is a cyclic process. The requirement of reduced pyridine nucleotide and ATP and the sensitivity of fixation to AMP and ADP support the conjecture that it occurs via the Calvin cycle. After thorough study of variables affecting catalysis, specific activities (millimicromoles of substrate disappearing per milligram of protein) at 30 C were determined for RuDP carboxylase (C), Ru5-P kinase (K) and ATP-, NADH(2)- dependent CO(2) fixation (CO(2) F) after growth autotrophically on fructose, glucose, ribose, glutamate, lactate, succinate, and acetate. Values for these growth modes were, respectively-for C: 67.3, 51.1, 51.4, 24.6, 2.05, 10.2, 2.25, 1.4; for K: 24.7, 24.0, 23.2, 14.2, 12.8, 12.9, 13.4, 2.8; and for CO(2) F: 4.54, 4.83, 3.10, 2.87, 0.85, 1.51, 0.24, 0.41. The qualitative parallel between values for RuDP carboxylase and CO(2) fixation suggests that one major control point in fixation is the step catalyzed by RuDP carboxylase.  相似文献

Isotopic analyses of Candidatus “Brocadia anammoxidans,” a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium that anaerobically oxidizes ammonium (anammox), show that it strongly fractionates against 13C; i.e., lipids are depleted by up to 47‰ versus CO2. Similar results were obtained for the anammox bacterium Candidatus “Scalindua sorokinii,” which thrives in the anoxic water column of the Black Sea, suggesting that different anammox bacteria use identical carbon fixation pathways, which may be either the Calvin cycle or the acetyl coenzyme A pathway.  相似文献

The northeastern forest region of China is an important component of total temperate and boreal forests in the northern hemisphere. But how carbon (C) pool size and distribution varies among tree, understory, forest floor and soil components, and across stand ages remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we selected three major temperate and two major boreal forest types in northeastern (NE) China. Within both forest zones, we focused on four stand age classes (young, mid-aged, mature and over-mature). Results showed that total C storage was greater in temperate than in boreal forests, and greater in older than in younger stands. Tree biomass C was the main C component, and its contribution to the total forest C storage increased with increasing stand age. It ranged from 27.7% in young to 62.8% in over-mature stands in boreal forests and from 26.5% in young to 72.8% in over-mature stands in temperate forests. Results from both forest zones thus confirm the large biomass C storage capacity of old-growth forests. Tree biomass C was influenced by forest zone, stand age, and forest type. Soil C contribution to total forest C storage ranged from 62.5% in young to 30.1% in over-mature stands in boreal and from 70.1% in young to 26.0% in over-mature in temperate forests. Thus soil C storage is a major C pool in forests of NE China. On the other hand, understory and forest floor C jointly contained less than 13% and <5%, in boreal and temperate forests respectively, and thus play a minor role in total forest C storage in NE China.  相似文献
