A total of 68 willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus L.) was collected during September 1995 from two localities in Troms County, northern Norway. Thin blood smears were prepared and examined for blood parasites. Of the 68 willow ptarmigan examined, 94% harbored one or more species of hematozoa. There were four (6%), 44 (65%), 16 (24%), and four (6%) birds infected by zero, one, two, and three species of parasites, respectively. Prevalences at the coastal locality, Kattfjord (n = 43), were Leucocytozoon lovati 86%, Trypanosoma avium (26%), and microfilariae (30%). At the inland locality, Iselvdalen (n = 25), prevalences were L. lovati 96%, T. avium 12%, and microfilariae 0%. We also searched connective tissues for the filaroid nematode Splendidofilaria papillocerca; in Kattfjord this parasite only occurred in adult hosts where prevalence was 94%, but the parasite was not found in Iselvdalen. To estimate the efficiency of parasite detection by standard blood sampling techniques, we sampled peripheral blood from the brachial wing vein and blood from the pulmonary system from willow ptarmigan. Sampling peripheral blood from the brachial vein led to underestimates of the prevalence of microfilariae. There was no significant difference between L. lovati and T. avium prevalence in blood collected from the brachial vein or deep circulation. Age of host had a strong impact on prevalence, especially for S. papillocerca and microfilariae.  相似文献

The population density of willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus L.) in northern Scandinavia changes in synchrony with the cyclic density variations in populations of microtine rodents. To assess the genetic changes accompanying the variations in population number, allozyme variation was studied at 23 loci in 640 willow grouse, representing four mainland and one island locality sampled during high and low population density. The average heterozygosity (H = 8.3%) and proportion of polymorphic loci (P = 26%) is not lower in willow grouse than in avian species with a more stable demography; the recurrent population density changes do not appear to affect drastically the long term effective population size, presumably because of extensive migration. Significant allele frequency differences were found both between populations and between different density phases. The genetic distance (D; Nei, 1972) was, in about 50% of the cases, larger between two consecutive time periods than between two localities in a certain year. Spatial and temporal allele frequency variation each represented around 3% of the gene diversity. The temporal heterogeneity may be caused by nonrandom sampling of family groups, rather than drift of allele frequencies between generations due to small effective population size, as has been suggested for microtine species.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of the capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse and willow grouse in Kainuu game management district in northeastern Finland in the years 1989–2004. It appears that the 6–7 year periodicity that prevailed in this region from 1960s up to 1980s has now vanished in all species. The grouse data are modelled using a linear autoregressive model with lag terms for population dynamics including grouse harvest as annual bag and an index of winter severity (winter‐time area of Baltic Sea ice cover). We use the Akaike information criterion for selecting the best model for each species; first order lag is forced to the models. It turns out that a term is needed for harvesting (with a negative coefficient) in models for all species. For the capercaillie and the hazel grouse second order lag was included, for the black grouse and the willow grouse first order lag suffices. The willow grouse is the only species where the index of winter strength (with a negative coefficient) is needed in the model.  相似文献

Browsing mammals strongly modify the structure of vegetation of forest-tundra ecotones. We investigated the impact of reindeer browsing on growth and morphology of an arctic willow, Salix glauca, by studying plants inside and outside fenced areas in a tundra habitat at the tree line. We also studied if reindeer feeding has an effect on the forage availability for willow grouse, a herbivore sharing the same food plant. Analyses of 6-year data show that reindeer strongly reduces the growth of tundra willow and changes plant morphology to a stunted growth form. Intense reindeer browsing on willow limited the forage availability for willow grouse and grouse fed less on reindeer-browsed willow than willows protected from reindeer browsing. The results of this study imply that herbivores can counteract the increase of shrubs in forest-tundra ecotones, as has been predicted in some studies discussing the effects of climatic warming on vegetation. Furthermore, trophic interactions should be incorporated in modelling vegetation changes as a response to increased temperatures.  相似文献

Tracking past population fluctuations can give insight into current levels of genetic variation present within species. Analysing population dynamics over larger timescales can be aligned to known climatic changes to determine the response of species to varying environments. Here, we applied the Pairwise Sequentially Markovian Coalescent (psmc ) model to infer past population dynamics of three widespread grouse species; black grouse, willow grouse and rock ptarmigan. This allowed the tracking of the effective population size (Ne) of all three species beyond 1 Mya, revealing that (i) early Pleistocene cooling (~2.5 Mya) caused an increase in the willow grouse and rock ptarmigan populations, (ii) the mid‐Brunhes event (~430 kya) and following climatic oscillations decreased the Ne of willow grouse and rock ptarmigan, but increased the Ne of black grouse and (iii) all three species reacted differently to the last glacial maximum (LGM) – black grouse increased prior to it, rock ptarmigan experienced a severe bottleneck and willow grouse was maintained at large population size. We postulate that the varying psmc signal throughout the LGM depicts only the local history of the species. Nevertheless, the large population fluctuations in willow grouse and rock ptarmigan indicate that both species are opportunistic breeders while black grouse tracks the climatic changes more slowly and is maintained at lower Ne. Our results highlight the usefulness of the psmc approach in investigating species’ reaction to climate change in the deep past, but also that caution should be taken in drawing general conclusions about the recent past.  相似文献

Food matter eaten in the first snowless spots early in the spring by capercaillie Tetrao urogallus and willow grouse Lagopus lagopus was studied in Finnish Forest Lapland. When the snow disappears, both species change to feeding mainly on the plants available in the snowless spots, although male capercaillie does not exploit this nutritious diet to the same extent as female capercaillie and willow grouse. Selection in favour of nitrogen and phosphorus-rich food items, i.e. Betula pubescens , male catkins Eriophorum vaginatum , flower buds, and Equisetum spp., stems and tips, seems to be characteristic especially of the female capercaillie, whose winter diet is poor in these elements. Female capercaillie also feeds on more plant species or different parts of plants at one time than willow grouse, while no differences were recorded between male and female willow grouse in the composition of their spring food. The crowberry Empetrum hermaphroditum , almost regularly produces a bountiful berry crop in northern Finland, and since it overwinters well, it represents an easy source of energy and water available almost every spring. The quality and/or the quantity of the green food matter available early in the spring may fluctuate considerably and be of importance for short-term fluctuations in the populations of these tetraonid species.  相似文献

During a five-year period, 1975–1979, a total of 2881 prey individuals of 65 prey species were collected at 162 golden eagle nests from northern Sweden and from the island of Gotland. In northern Sweden birds are taken in higher numbers than mammals but calculated as weight the two categories are of equal importance, The main prey during the breeding season are capercaillie, black grouse, willow grouse, ptarmigan, mountain hare and reindeer fawns which together form 91% of the total food biomass. The capercaillie and the black grouse are taken more in the southern part of the coniferous region than in the northern. In contrast, in northern areas, reindeer fawns are more preyed upon than in the South, Ptarmigan and willow grouse are the most commonly captured prey species in mountain areas. The total number of reindeer fawns taken (dead and/or alive) by the Swedish golden eagle population during one summer is estimated at 600 individuals. On Gotland the golden eagles take mammals more often than in its northern distribution area. Rabbit and hedgehog arc the most important species.  相似文献

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in four Scandinavian populations of willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus) and two Scottish populations of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) were assessed at 13 protein‐coding loci. We found high levels of diversity, with one substitution every 55 bp as an average and a total of 76 unlinked parsimony informative SNPs. Different estimators of genetic diversity such as: number of synonymous and non‐synonymous sites, average number of alleles, number and percentage of polymorphic loci, mean nucleotide diversity (πs, πa) and gene diversity at synonymous and non‐synonymous sites showed higher diversity in the northern populations compared to southern ones. Strong levels of purifying selection found in all the populations together with neutrality tests conforming to neutral expectations agree with large effective population sizes. Assignment tests reported a clear distinction between Scandinavian and Scottish grouse suggesting the existence of two different evolutionary significant units. The divergence time between willow and red grouse ranging between 12 500 and 125 000 years, in conjunction with the presence of ‘specific’ markers for each subspecies prompt a reassessment of the taxonomical status of the Scottish red grouse.  相似文献

Studying demographic history of species provides insight into how the past has shaped the current levels of overall biodiversity and genetic composition of species, but also how these species may react to future perturbations. Here we investigated the demographic history of the willow grouse (Lagopus lagopus), rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), and black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) through the Late Pleistocene using two complementary methods and whole genome data. Species distribution modeling (SDM) allowed us to estimate the total range size during the Last Interglacial (LIG) and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) as well as to indicate potential population subdivisions. Pairwise Sequentially Markovian Coalescent (PSMC) allowed us to assess fluctuations in effective population size across the same period. Additionally, we used SDM to forecast the effect of future climate change on the three species over the next 50 years. We found that SDM predicts the largest range size for the cold‐adapted willow grouse and rock ptarmigan during the LGM. PSMC captured intraspecific population dynamics within the last glacial period, such that the willow grouse and rock ptarmigan showed multiple bottlenecks signifying recolonization events following the termination of the LGM. We also see signals of population subdivision during the last glacial period in the black grouse, but more data are needed to strengthen this hypothesis. All three species are likely to experience range contractions under future warming, with the strongest effect on willow grouse and rock ptarmigan due to their limited potential for northward expansion. Overall, by combining these two modeling approaches, we have provided a multifaceted examination of the biogeography of these species and how they have responded to climate change in the past. These results help us understand how cold‐adapted species may respond to future climate changes.  相似文献

The extent to which genotypic variation at a priori identified candidate genes can explain variation in complex phenotypes is a major debate in evolutionary biology. Whereas some high‐profile genes such as the MHC or MC1R clearly do account for variation in ecologically relevant characters, many complex phenotypes such as response to parasite infection may well be underpinned by a large number of genes, each of small and effectively undetectable effect. Here, we characterize a suite of novel candidate genes for variation in gastrointestinal nematode (Trichostrongylus tenuis) burden among red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) individuals across a network of moors in north‐east Scotland. We test for associations between parasite load and genotypic variation in twelve genes previously identified to be differentially expressed in experimentally infected red grouse or genetically differentiated among red grouse populations with overall different parasite loads. These genes are associated with a broad physiological response including immune system processes. Based on individual‐level generalized linear models, genotypic variants in nine genes were significantly associated with parasite load, with effect sizes accounting for differences of 514–666 worms per bird. All but one of these variants were synonymous or untranslated, suggesting that these may be linked to protein‐coding variants or affect regulatory processes. In contrast, population‐level analyses revealed few and inconsistent associations with parasite load, and little evidence of signatures of natural selection. We discuss the broader significance of these contrasting results in the context of the utility of population genomics and landscape genomics approaches in detecting adaptive genomic signatures.  相似文献

Using independently segregating nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and mitochondrial control region sequences, we found an east–west division among sampled willow grouse Lagopus lagopus subspecies. This division cut across the range of the subspecies with the largest distribution (lagopus) and thus contradicted existing taxonomic classifications. Russian Lagopus lagopus lagopus tended to cluster with North American willow grouse partly classified as other subspecies. Scandinavian willow grouse (L. l. lagopus) clustered with red grouse from Britain and Ireland (Lagopus lagopus scoticus and Lagopus lagopus hibernicus) but substructuring confirmed the monophyly of the latter. In North America, we could not detect any major genetic divisions apart from two birds described as alexandrae from the Heceta Island (Alaska) when using mitochondrial sequences. Other samples from North America were intermingled regardless of whether they were described as muriei, alexandrae or lagopus. A specimen described as alexandrae was to some extent distinct when analysing the SNP data. The genetic analyses indicated some concordance between genetics and taxonomy but not complete congruence. This is particularly evident for mitochondrial DNA network analyses. We suggest that the taxonomy of this species would benefit by a careful re‐examination of the available evidence for subspecies. It appears as if subspecies status is a poor proxy for assigning evolutionary significant units and management units in this species. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 77–90.  相似文献

A total of 1,115 longnose dace, Rhinichthys cataractae (family Cyprinidae), were examined for parasites from May 1983 through October 1986 from 3 localities in the Ford River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Thirteen parasite species (1 Monogenea, 2 Digenea, 2 Cestoda, 4 Nematoda, 1 Acanthocephala, 3 Protozoa) infected dace. The parasite faunas of dace, taxonomically and in species number, were similar between localities. Posthodiplostomum minimum minimum, Neascus sp., and Rhabdochona canadensis were the most common helminths infecting dace from each locality. The first 2 species did not exhibit consistent seasonal infection patterns between years, whereas the prevalence and mean intensity of R. canadensis in dace from the downriver locality were higher in summer 1983, 1984, and 1985. The intensity of infection of each of these helminth species significantly increased with host length. The prevalences and mean intensities of P. m. minimum, Neascus sp., and R. canadensis as well as the helminth infracommunity diversity were highest in dace from the upriver locality. The major factors that influenced parasite intensity were environmental factors that occurred when and where a fish began its life, the sequence of events that occurred in each habitat the fish encountered during its life, and the length of exposure (age of fish). Dace have isolationist helminth infracommunities arising from factors including ectothermy, a simple enteric system, restricted vagility, and being gape-limited. Allogenic helminths with indirect life cycles predominate in the depauperate helminth fauna of dace.  相似文献

In many birds, females prefer males with the biggest or brightest sexual ornaments, which might reflect a higher phenotypic quality, such as fewer parasites. Unlike humans, most birds detect near-ultraviolet (UV) light, and UV signals can play an important role in sexual signalling and mate choice. Using a spectrophotometer, we analysed the colour of red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus sexual ornaments (their combs). We first show that combs reflect both in the red (600–700 nm) and UV (300–400 nm) part of the spectrum. Second, we investigated whether comb size and colour, and UV reflectance in particular, reflected an aspect of individual quality: the intensity of infection by a main nematode parasite, the caecal threadworm Trichostrongylus tenuis . We first analysed comb size and colour variation, and parasite intensity variation, in relation to sex and age. Males had bigger and redder combs than females, but UV brightness was greater for female than for male combs. Comb colour also differed between age groups, with young birds of both sexes showing brighter UV than old birds. Young grouse also had fewer T. tenuis worms than old grouse. We further tested whether intensity of infection could be predicted from comb characteristics (size and colour) in male and female red grouse. We found that parasite intensity was not significantly related to comb size or red brightness, but fewer worms were predicted from brighter UV in combs, in both males and females. The results indicate that UV reflectance of combs have a quality revealing function and might play an important role in grouse mate choice: UV brightness of combs could enable both male and female red grouse to assess the parasite loads of a potential mate.  相似文献

Little is known about the cestode parasites of red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus. The carcasses of 71 free-living and grouse collected from northeastern Scotland (UK) between June 1991 and September 1992 were examined for the cestode Paroniella urogalli. Over 70% of young and old birds were infected in summer and winter. Cestode abundance ranged from 0 to 29 (mean +/- SE = 5.54 +/- 0.81) worms per host and did not differ significantly between young and old grouse, or between seasons. Cestode intensities did vary significantly between the sexes, but in opposite directions at two sites. A significantly greater total biomass (dry weight) of cestodes was found in grouse in the summer. Cestode biomass also was greater in young than in old grouse, although there was no significant difference after controlling for the effects of site, year and season. However, in the summer total cestode biomass in young grouse was significantly greater per unit bodyweight than in old grouse. No evidence was found for an effect of cestodiasis on grouse condition but a significant positive correlation existed between grouse comb condition and cestode abundance. Estimates of mean per capita worm mass suggested an intensity dependent reduction in the weight of individual cestodes in birds in their first summer. Per capita cestode mass was significantly lower in winter than summer, which may suggest that the production of mature proglottids varies with season. There was also a significant negative correlation between numbers of the nematode Trichostrongylus tenuis and the total biomass of P. urogalli in grouse.  相似文献

The reliability of different egg counting methods for estimating the intensity of Trichostrongylus tenuis infections in red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus, was investigated in the autumn, when grouse may harbour high parasite intensities. Possible limitations to the use of these methods were also examined. Faecal egg counts were found to accurately estimate T. tenuis worm intensities, at least up to an observed maximum of c. 8000 worms. Two egg counting methods (smear and McMaster) gave consistent results, although the exact relationship with worm intensity differed according to the method used. Faecal egg counts significantly decreased with increasing length of sample storage time, but egg counts were reliable for estimating worm intensity for three weeks. The concentration of eggs in the caecum was also found to reliably estimate worm intensity. However, egg counts from frozen gut samples cannot be used to estimate worm intensities. These results conclude that, despite some limitations, faecal and caecum egg counts provide useful and reliable ways of measuring T. tenuis intensities in red grouse.  相似文献

We examined the variation in sexual ornamentation of male Chinese grouse (Tetrastes sewerzowi) in the Gansu Province, China, seeking to identify factors involved in whether ornament size and brightness are honest signals of male quality. Compared to unmated males, mated males had significantly larger and redder combs and, although they did not have significantly larger territories, they defended them more vigorously. Mated males had significantly higher blood carotenoid and testosterone levels, significantly better body condition, and significantly lower parasite loads than unmated males. Our findings are thus consistent with the hypothesis that comb size and color are honest signals of better male quality in the grouse, mediated through lower parasite loads and/or higher testosterone levels.  相似文献

Field studies of mechanisms involved in population regulation have tended to focus on the roles of either intrinsic or extrinsic factors, but these are rarely mutually exclusive and their interactions can be crucial in determining dynamics. Experiments on red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus have shown that population instability can be caused both by the effects of a parasitic nematode, Trichostrongylus tenuis, on host production or by changes in testosterone influencing aggressive behaviour and recruitment. We experimentally tested for an interaction between testosterone and T. tenuis in free-living male grouse. A total of 123 grouse were caught in autumn, treated with an anthelmintic to remove parasites, and then given either testosterone or empty, control, implants. After one month grouse were re-infected with a standard dose of parasites. We show that males with increased testosterone levels had greater parasite intensities than controls after one year. We discuss possible physiological and behavioural mechanisms linking testosterone and increased parasite intensity, and the implications for our understanding of complex, unstable population dynamics.  相似文献

The metazoan parasite communities of eels Anguilla anguilla were investigated in three riverine localities and one lake in Devon. Altogether 21 species of parasite, the majority of the British eel parasite fauna, were recorded. Parasite communities in the three riverine localities were more similar to each other than to that of the lake. The four parasite component communities were typical and representative of those from eels in other parts of the U.K. They were characterized by low species diversity and domination by a single species: Pseudodacytlogyrus anguillae in the rivers and Diplostomum spathaceum in the lake. Both the dominant species and the majority of parasite species, and hence individuals, in any locality infected eels directly by free swimming planktonic larval stages or indirectly by the ingestion of infected planktonic copepod intermediate hosts. Examination of other species of fish in each locality showed that only Raphidascaris acus utilized a fish species as an intermediate or paratenic host to infect eels. Increases in prevalence and intensity of infection with size of eel by helminths such as Camallanus lacustris and Paraquimperia tenerrima were observed in localities in which transmission of these parasites could not have involved another fish species. Over 63% of the specialist, specific parasites of eels throughout Europe employ planktonic transmission to their hosts, as do several species of the commoner generalists. A study of eel parasite communities thus leads to the conclusion that eels are widely and closely associated in their habits with plankton and that eels of all sizes feed regularly upon planktonic copepods: the widely accepted view of eels as being more or less exclusively benthic in habit and feeding behaviour requires re-appraisal.  相似文献
