Summary Genetic divergence in 35 populations (10 parents and 25 F1's) of mung bean was studied by D2 and canonical analyses. The ten parents formed as many as eight separate clusters, suggesting that the genetic divergence between them was quite substantial. The parent BR-2 was highly divergent from all the other entries. It was found that flowering time, maturity, seed density and seed size (100-seed weight) contributed substantially to the divergence. Canonical analysis supported the divergence pattern obtained by D2 analysis and the contribution of different characters to genetic divergence. The relationship between genetic divergence (D2) and heterosis was evaluated. In general, there was fair agreement between the extent of heterosis and the genetic divergence between the parents.  相似文献

Three explorations were undertaken in South East Coastal zone of India covering parts of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Orissa states to collect Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre germplasm during March–June 2007. A total of 123 accessions were collected and seed data recorded were analyzed for morphometric traits viz., seed length, seed width, seed thickness, 100‐seed weight and oil content. Variation in the collected germplasm was analyzed using anova , simple measures of variation and D2 statistics. Significant genetic variability between seed traits and oil content and association among the seed traits was recorded. Phenotypic variance was higher than genotypic variance for all the characters indicating dominant role of environment. High heritability (broad sense) for 100‐seed weight (97.6%) and oil content (86.7%) indicated the reliability of these characters as selection criteria for plus trees. Genetic gain was maximum for 100‐seed weight (62.6%) followed by oil content (30.5%). D2 analysis grouped the accessions into 12 clusters. Cluster XII and cluster IX were the most diverse based on the intercluster distance. Based on the observed diversity, Chittoor, Srikakulam and Adilabad districts of AP are most suitable for collecting diverse germplasm lines and also for in situ conservation.  相似文献

A thorough and extensive wild germplasm exploration survey was undertaken and 50 high yielding candidate plus trees (CPTs) of Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre from different locations from a latitudinal and longitudinal spread between 12°41′ and 22°E longitude and 77° and 84°40′N latitude covering 11 locations in an area spread of 150,000 km2 were collected for evaluating genetic association and variability in seed and growth characters. There were significant differences observed in seed morphology and oil content as was in plant height, and number of branches in the progeny trial. Plant height and number of branches exhibited much higher values of both phenotypic and genotypic variance than observed in the seed characters. Among seed characters oil content exhibited highest broad sense heritability of more than 93% followed by seed length (90.0%). In contrast seed width showed the second highest genetic advance of 5.64% following the highest genetic advance of 10.15% exhibited by oil content. Hierarchical clustering by Ward’s Minimum Variance Cluster Analysis method showed phylogeographic patterns of genetic diversity. K means clustering revealed that trees from different geographic regions were grouped together in a cluster and as were trees from the same geographical area placed in different clusters suggesting that geographical diversity did not go hand in hand with genetic diversity. In addition clustering identified promising accessions with favourable traits for future establishment of orchards.  相似文献

Summary A representative group of 100 elite lines, 67 of which are restorers and 33 maintainers, from 68 crosses made at IRRI and 18 improved varieties from five countries were studied, using Mahalonobis, D2-statistic and canonical analysis, to understand the nature and magnitude of divergence and to assess the importance of a set of quantitative characters related to yield in genetic differentiation. The 100 genotypes were grouped into 13 clusters. There were three single variety clusters and the number of lines in the remaining clusters ranged from 2–36. Canonical vector values indicated the importance of yield followed by 1,000-grain weight, days to maturity and plant height in primary as well as in secondary differentiation. Results showed that yield, number of tillers per plant, days to maturity and 1,000-grain weight contributed largely to the divergence. There were no indications of a relationship between geographical diversity and genetic diversity in the present study. Disposition of IRRI developed maintainers and restorers into various clusters indicated the presence of large amounts of diversity within the IRRI elite lines which suggested that these materials could be used in crossing programs to produce heterotic F1 hybrids. Crossing of maintainers and restorers among the highly diverse groups was suggested as it may produce F1S that will give higher magnitudes of heterosis. Part of M.S. Summary A representative group of 190 rice types collected from North-East India along with four standard varieties, three of which were indicas and one japonica, was studied to understand the nature of genetic divergence. Preliminary grouping was done by canonical analysis and the resultant 42 groups were further classified using the D2 statistic. The final grouping resulted in nine divergent clusters. The three indica standards were found in three different clusters indicating the wide available variability among them. The japonica standard formed a separate group by itself. A majority of the North-East Indian types formed clusters with indicas, whereas some were intermediate and still others were closer to japonica or indica, thus indicating a series of intergrades bridging indica and japonica.Height followed by leaf area was found to be important for primary and 100-grain weight, followed by amylose content for secondary differentiation. It appears that natural selection as well as human selection might have operated for characters differentiating rice types in Assam and North Eastern Himalayas. Geographical distance was not found to be related to genetic divergence. The study suggests that O. sativa contains innumerable but divergent forms, and its classification into definite varietal groups on an arbitrary basis such as isolation barrier, sexual affinity or geographic distribution would be far from reality.  相似文献

Summary Thirty okra genotypes of diverse eco-geographical origin were grown in single-row plots in a randomised complete block design. The data collected on 14 characters were subjected to analysis of variance. By multivariate analysis (Mahalanobis D2 technique), the genetic divergence among the genotypes were quantitatively measured. The genotypes were grouped into five clusters by this technique. There was no relationship between clustering pattern and eco-geographic distribution. The effects of genetic divergence on the choice of parental stock in hybridization was discussed.  相似文献

A thorough and extensive wild germplasm exploration survey was undertaken and 32 high yielding candidate plus trees (CPTs) of Jatropha curcas from different locations from a latitudinal and longitudinal spread between 12°41′ and 22°′E longitude and 77° and 84°40′N latitude covering 11 locations in an area spread of 150,000 km2 was collected for evaluating genetic association, and variability in seed and growth characters. Significant trait differences were observed in all the seed characters viz., seed morphology and oil content as were observed in growth characters viz., plant height, and female to male flower ratio and seed yield in the progeny trial. Broad sense heritability was high in general and exceeded 80% for all the seed traits studied. Female to male flower ratio showed near to 100% heritability followed by yield (83.61) and plant height (87.73). The path analysis revealed that female to male flower ratio had highest positive direct relationship with seed yield (0.789), followed by number of branches (0.612) and number of days from fruiting to maturity (0.431). Negative indirect effects were seen in number of days from flowering to fruiting which indirectly and negatively influenced yield through plant height and number of branches. Hierarchical clustering by Ward’s minimum variance cluster analysis showed phylogeographic patterns of genetic diversity. K-means clustering revealed that trees from different geographic regions were grouped together in a cluster and as were trees from the same geographical area placed in different clusters suggesting that geographical diversity did not go hand in hand with genetic diversity. In addition clustering identified promising accession with favourable traits for future establishment of elite seedling seed orchard and clonal seed orchard for varietal and hybridization programmes. We investigate colour pattern and morphological variation in Chitaura grasshoppers on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, and examine the relationship between divergence in these two sets of characters and population history, as reflected by variation in mitochondrial DNA. Analysis of colour pattern variation identifies a total of 21 distinct Operational Taxonomic Units in Sulawesi, the majority of which have parapatric distributions. Patterns of phenotypic variation at two contact zones in north Sulawesi suggest genetic independence between three of these colour forms, indicating that speciation has occurred. Despite this, colour pattern divergence is only coincident with morphological differentiation at one of these contact zones. In addition, neither type of phenotypic divergence is associated with geographical structuring in mitochondrial DNA, suggesting that historical isolation has had little influence on evolutionary diversification. Instead, divergence in colour pattern and morphology appears to have occurred rapidly or under conditions of continued gene flow, possibly in response to spatially variable natural selection. This result has implications for the identification of conservation units based solely on molecular markers.  相似文献

Elymus nutans Griseb. as an important forage grass and gene pools for improving cereal crops, widely distributes in west China. However, little is known about its genetic and geographical patterns. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were applied to assess genetic diversity and geographical divergence among 63 E. nutans accessions from west China. The cluster analysis separated the accessions into several groups with geographical origins. The molecular variance analysis (AMOVA) showed that the proportion of variance explained by within- and among-geographical group diversity was 43.2% and 56.8%, respectively. Based on pairwise genetic distances (ΦST) between geographical groups, the relationships were congruent with the cluster of accessions. The distinct geographical divergence of E. nutans was revealed between Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Xinjiang. The ecogeographical conditions such as climate and mountain ranges and elevation behaved as the crucial factors for genetic divergence. Furthermore, the study also indicated that Qinghai-Tibet Plateau might be the diversity differentiation center of E. nutans. The result will facilitate the breeding program and germplasm collection and conservation.  相似文献

Different cultivars of cow pea and garden pea seeds were surveyed for susceptibility or resistance towards the toxigenic and aflatoxin-producing mould (Aspergillus flavus IMI 102135). The results show that aflatoxin production varied among the different cultivars of both cow pea and garden pea. Morphological and histological characters of the different cultivars tested did not show any relation between colour, shape and size of seeds and the amount of aflatoxin produced. The chemical analysis of the different constituents obtained from both seed coats and seed kernels with susceptible, partially resistant and resistant cow pea and garden pea cultivars revealed that the resistant cultivars of cow pea (namely: Balady cultivar) and garden pea (namely: Melting Sugar cultivar) contained lower levels of sodium and higher levels of phosphate and potassium.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. belongs to family Euphorbiaceae, native to South America attained significant importance for its seed oil which can be converted to biodiesel, a renewable energy source alternative to conventional petrodiesel. Very few attempts were made to isolate novel microsatellite markers and assessment of the extent of genetic equilibrium and diversity that exists in J. curcas. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to isolate the novel microsatellites and access genetic equilibrium, diversity that exists among 44 diverse germplasm collected from distinct geographical areas in India using isolated microsatellites. The overall efficiency of the enrichment of microsatellite by dual probe in the present study found to be 54% and among the sequences obtained the percentage of sequences having suitable flanking regions for the primer designing was found to be 89.58%. The mean co-efficient of genetic similarity (CGS) was found to be 0.97. The overall diversity obtained by microsatellites was found to be low in comparison with the diversity reported by multilocus markers systems observed in earlier studies; however, the good allele polymorphism was observed. The overall dendrogram of microsatellite analysis resulted in random clustering of germplasm and not in accordance to geographical area of collection. The present study, diversity analysis using microsatellite markers concludes the low genetic diversity and genetic disequlibrium of J. curcas in India and will provide pavement for further intra-population studies on narrow geographical areas to understand the population genetic structure, phylogeography and molecular ecological studies. The germplasm characterized, and the microsatellite markers isolated and characterized in the present study can be employed efficiently in breeding programs for genetic improvement of the species through marker assisted selection and QTL analysis, for further genetic resource management and help in making the J. curcas as potential crop with superior agronomical traits.  相似文献

Summary The role of 19 structural, developmental and biochemical traits in relation to specific adaptation was analysed in a set of 17 diverse lines with quantified adaptation, representing contemporary cultivars and land races of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), using multivariate analysis. Significant varietal variation was observed for most characters, particularly for the activity of the enzyme nitrate reductase (NR) and protein content in the plant. The distance analysis (D2-statistic) revealed that seed size and pod number and their associated attributes were important forces of divergence. The additional forces of divergence were NR activity at the flower initiation stage, yield components such as number of primary and secondary branches, and other features such as plant habit and duration of flowering. The principal component analysis revealed some similarities and also differences from the distance analysis. Leaf size, days to flower initiation, seed size and, to some extent, NR activity at flower initiation stage, were important in the first vector. Developmental traits such as chlorophyll depth, NR activity at the pod initiation and grain filling stages, and the percent protein content in the plant at flower initiation were important in the second vector. In general, the clustering pattern was not related to the geographical origin, seed colour, size of regression coefficient for yield, or deviation from linearity. The importance of the developmental and biochemical attributes in the divergence of cultivated chickpea, such as days to flower initiation, duration of flowering, NR activity and the rates of protein accumulation in developing seeds, and in adaptation, suggests the critical role of these attributes. NR activity at the flower initiation stage would appear to have a major role in the domestication of this crop and its intra-specific differentiation, as an increased seed size could not have been possible without better nutrient uptake and utilization.Part of dissertation submitted for Ph. Summary The degree of genetic divergence using Mahalanobis's D2 statistic and the clustering pattern using canonical variate analysis between Sahiwal and its 39 Friesian grades were studied for 9 characters of economic importance. The records were adjusted for the significant effects due to farms, periods and seasons. Forty grades were grouped into 11 clusters. The results have shown that in cattle when two breeds of diverse origin, one of superior merit and the other relatively inferior, are crossed in a scheme of forward crossing, there is no linear increase in production level above 50% with the increase in genes of the superior parent. It can not be assumed that grading up to a total replacement of genes will lead to higher levels of production at least in cattle. In order to stabilize a breed type from such a crossbred population a breeding plan has been proposed.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. belongs to family Euphorbiaceae, native to South America and widely distributed in South and Central America, attained significant importance for its seed oil which can be converted to biodiesel, a renewable energy source alternative to conventional petro-diesel. Very few attempts were made to understand the extent of genetic diversity that exists in J. curcas. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to asses the genetic diversity among 28 diverse germplasm collected from distinct geographical areas in India. The overall percentage of polymorphism (PP) was found to be 50.70 and 60.95 by RAPD and AFLP, respectively. The mean PP was found to be 9.72 and 20.57 by RAPD and AFLP, respectively. The mean genetic similarity was observed to be 0.89 by RAPD and 0.88 by AFLP. Among the germplasm JCI20 found to be the most diverged one. The dendrogram analysis of RAPD and AFLP data showed good congruence, but better resolution and more polymorphism was observed with AFLP. When the dendrogram of RAPD was compared with AFLP dendrogram, the major clustering pattern was found to be similar; however, changes in minor grouping were observed. In both RAPD and AFLP analysis clustering of germplasm did not show any correlation with the geographical area of collection. Low genetic diversity observed in J. curcas and the clustering pattern indicates that the distribution of species might have happened through anthropogenic activity and warrants the need for widening the genetic base. The present study will provide pavement for further intra-population studies on narrow geographical areas, to understand the population genetic structure, phylogeography, molecular ecological studies. The marker information and the characterized germplasm help in further improvement of the species through marker assisted breeding programs.  相似文献

Significant reduction of genetic diversity was observed in seed coat colour and electrosphoretic isozyme genotypes when infected plants were eliminated in genetically heterogeneous pea populations. Some accessions where genetic homogeneity was expected were apparently mixtures. Detection of latent infections by pea seedborne mosaic virus by the ELISA method was more effective on single-plant samples than on bulked samples of four to five plants, and from older plants rather than young seedlings. The implication of these findings in relation to a virus eradication programme in plant germplasm collections are discussed.

Summary Pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum cinerariefolium), an important paramedicinal plant is a potential source of pyrethrins, which have a long history of safe uses against mosquito larvae — a carrier of malarial parasite. It was introduced in India from Kenya in 1931. Considerable genetic diversity has been generated over the years. Repeated clonal selection could lead to isolation of a number of divergent clones representing selective divergence. Planned hybridization among some of the chosen clones could further enlarge the spectrum of variation as measured by multivariate analyses (D2-statistic and canonical analysis). The resulting hybrids manifested a variable degree of heterosis which was found to be, by and large, positively associated with the degree of divergence between the two constituent parents of a hybrid. However, the choice of the potential hybrid clone(s) for commercial exploitation was most viable when parents for hybridization were short-listed on the basis of parental divergence coupled essentially with per se performance for specific traits. The latter criterion assumes greater significance since low x low or medium x low parental hybrids also tended to register high heterosis for both the pyrethrins content and yield. Four hybrids: 234xL, 8xL, 326×395 and 319xL were identified to be the most promising for clonal selection.CIMAP publication no. 9189  相似文献

Summary Thirty-one toria genotypes were grown in 12 artificially created environments in order to study genetic divergence. D2 estimates based on 12 characters were used in obtaining the clustering pattern and inter- and intracluster distances. Selection of divergent parents has been made in three ways, i.e., on the basis of (a) genetic divergence exhibited when grown in the richest and most productive environment; (b) stable and consistent values of divergence over all 12 environments and (c) pooled analysis. Out of 31 genotypes, on the basis of stability, high yield and divergence six genotypes were found to be suitable for use in a breeding programme.  相似文献

Systematic analysis of germplasm diversity and genetic relationship among cultivars is critical for development of appropriate conservation and breeding strategies. This approach has been applied to gain an insight about the molecular variance that exists in wild population of two important medicinal plant species of India that have a long history of therapeutic usage in herbal medicine. Adhatoda vasica and Andrographis paniculata, members of the family Acanthaceae, have wide geographical and climatic distribution across India suggesting a large amount of genetic diversity available for resource management and breeding programs. In this study we have assessed the genetic diversity of both these species distributed in five varied geo-environmental regions, using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting with selected primer combinations and statistical analysis. Cluster analysis and analysis of molecular variance also suggested a very high genetic variation. Detailed analyses of the results predict that the genetic variation found in A. vasica was more discrete that reflected strongly in the populations studied, whereas the genetic variation in A. paniculata was relatively uniform. Considering significantly large sample size and distinctive characteristics of the selected populations, this work contributes valuable insights that can be used to engineer conservation and utilization strategies for these species.  相似文献

Flax seed mucilage (SM) presents specific biological activities useful for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Understanding the population structure, genetic diversity and linkage disequilibrium (LD) of germplasm varying for mucilage content is pivotal for the identification of genes and quantitative trait loci underlying mucilage variation by association mapping (AM). In this study, 150 microsatellite loci were used to assess the population structure, genetic diversity and LD of a set of 60 flax cultivars/accessions capturing the breadth of SM variation in flax germplasm. STRUCTURE analysis and similarity-based methods revealed the presence of three populations reflecting mainly their geographic origins (South Asia, South America and North America), and the impact of germplasm exchange within and between North American flax breeding programs. Analysis of molecular variance showed that 78.32% of the genetic variation resided within populations and 21.68% among populations. The phi-statistic (??st) value of 0.22 confirmed the presence of a strong population structure. A total of 408 alleles were detected, with the South American population capturing the highest overall diversity. However, the genetic diversity was narrow, as indicated by the small number of alleles per locus (2.72) and gene diversity (mean?=?0.34). LD was significant between 3.9% (r 2) and 36.2% (D??) of the loci pairs (FDR?<?0.05). The mean r 2 and D?? were 0.26 and 0.53, respectively. The results suggest that the collection could be useful in AM studies aimed at the discovery of genes/alleles involved in SM; however a greater diversity may be required to improve the AM resolution.  相似文献
