A pregnane ester diglycoside from Sarcostemma brevistigma

A pregnane ester diglycoside, brevinine, has been isolated from the dried twigs of Sarcostemma brevistigma. Its chemical and spectroscopic data are consistent with the structure 11-O-benzoyl-sarcogenin-3-O-α-L-diginopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-α-L-diginopyranoside.     

Diterpenoids from galeopsis angustifolia

The structures of two new diterpenoids, galeopsin and pregaleopsin, isolated from aerial parts of Galeopsis angustifolia (Labiatae) have been shown to be 8β-acetoxy-15,16-epoxy-9α-hydroxylabda-13(16),14-dien-7-one and 8β-acetoxy-9α,13R; 15,16-diepoxylabd-14-en-7-one, respectively, by chemical and spectroscopic studies. The previously known diterpenoid hispanolone (15,16-epoxy-9α-hydroxy-8α-labda-13(16),14-dien-7-one) has been also obtained from the same source. A thermal retroaldol reaction in the absence of solvent experienced by these 9-hydroxy-7-keto-labdanes is also described.     

8,15-Epoxylabdane and norlabdane diterpenoids from Eragrostisviscosa

Four labdanes with a 8α,15-epoxy ring (8α,15-epoxylabdan-16β-oic acid; 8α,15-epoxy-16-norlabdan-13-one; 8α,15-epoxy-16-norlabdane; and 16-acetoxy-8α,15-epoxylabdane) and the known compound ambreinolide were isolated from the hexane extract of the aerial parts of the grass Eragrostis viscosa. The structures of all compounds were established based on spectroscopic data and the X-ray analysis of 8α,15-epoxy-16-norlabdan-13-one. The hexane extract presented moderate activity against the snail Biomphalaria glabrata. 8α,15-Epoxylabdan-16β-oic acid showed no mutagenic activity for doses up to 1000 μg/plate and no significant clastogenic activity for doses up to 100 μg/ml.     

Teuchamaedrin C,a neo-clerodane diterpenoid from Teucrium chamaedrys

A new neo-clerodane diterpenoid, teuchamaedrin C, has been isolated from the aerial parts of Teucrium chamaedrys. Its structure, (12S,18S)-15,16-epoxy-neo-clerodane-13(16)14-dien-19,20-olide-18,6β-hemiacetal, was established by spectroscopic and chemical means. In addition, the previously known diterpenoids 6α-hydroxyteuscordin and dihydroteugin were isolated from the same source.     

Three ent-kaurene diterpenes from Vellozia caput-ardeae

Three new ent-kaurene diterpenes have been isolated from the roots and stem of Vellozia caput-ardeae. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods as ent-9β-hydroxy kaur-16-ene, ent-11α-hydroxy kaur-16-ene and ent-9β,11α-dihydroxy kaur-16-ene.     

Withanolides of Datura spp. and hybrids

A new steroidal lactone of the withanolide group has been isolated from two Datura species and three hybrids and characterized as (20R,22R-5α,12α-dihydroxy-1-oxo-6α, 7α-epoxywitha-2,24-dienolide. The distribution of six withanolides throughout section Stramonium of the genus has been investigated.     

Proacaciberin,A cyanogenic glycoside from Acacia sieberiana var. Woodii

A new cyanogenic glycoside isolated from pods of Acacia sieberiana var. woodii has been shown by chemical and spectroscopic methods to be (2S)-2-[(6-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-3-methylbut-3-enenitrileo. Acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the glycoside afforded arabinose and proacacipetalin, and base-catalysed double-bond migration gave 2- [(6-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-β- d-glucopyranosyl)oxy ]-3-methylbut-2-enenitrile.     

Eudesmane alcohols from jasonia glutinosa

Three new sesquiterpene alcohols have been isolated from Jasonia glutinosa. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and chemical correlations as (?)-[11R]-4α,14-epoxyeudesm-11,12-diol, (?)-[11R]-eudesm-4(14)-en-5β,11,12-triol and (+)-[11R]-eudesm-4(14)-en-5α,11,12-triol and they are called α-epoxy kudtdiol, 5-epi-kudtriol and kudtriol respectively.     

Tenasogenin,a pregnane ester from Marsdenia tenacissima

A new polyhydroxy pregnane ester named tenasogenin was isolated from the seeds of Marsdenia tenacissima. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence and identification of its hydrolysis products, its structure has been established as 11α-O-β,β-dimethylacryloyl-3β,12β,14β,20R-tetrahydroxypregn-5-ene.     

Germacranolides from Viguiera microphylla

Three new germacranolides, including two heliangolides (niveusin C-2′,3′-epoxide and 1,2-dehydroniveusin C-2′,3′-epoxide) and a germacrolide (3β-hydroxy-8β-epoxyangeloyloxycostunolide-1β,10α-epoxide) were isolated from Viguiera microphylla. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analyses, including extensive ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR decoupling experiments and chemical transformations. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the structure of niveusin C-2′,3′-epoxide.     

Diterpenoids from Acacia leucophloea

From the root bark of Acacia leucophloea (Mimosaceae) two new pimar-8(14)-ene diterpenoids have been isolated. Their structures have been established by chemical and spectroscopic means as 1β,15R,16-trihydroxypimar8(14)-ene(leucophleol) and 15R,16-epoxy-1β,11α-dihydroxypimar-8(14)-ene(leucophleoxol).     

A lupenediol from Euonymus revolutus

A new lupane derivative isolated from Euonymus revolutus (Celastraceae) has been established to be 2α,3α-dihydroxy-lup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid on the basis of chemical interconversions and spectroscopic data.     

Plectranthoic acid,acetylplectranthoic acid and plectranthadiol,three triterpenoids from Plectranthus rugosus

Sitosterol and three new pentacyclic triterpenoids, plectranthoic acid, acetylplectranthoic acid and plectranthadiol, have been isolated from leaves of P. rugosus. From spectroscopic evidence and chemical behaviour the structure of plectranthoic acid was established as (19S)-3α-hydroxy-18α-urs-12-en-29β-oic acid and acetylplectranthoic acid is the 3α-acetyl derivative of this compound. Plectranthadiol is (19S)- 3α-hydroxy-18α-urs-12-en-29β-ol.

A new pregnane ester glycoside, brevine, was isolated from the dried twigs of Sarcostemma brevistigma. Its chemical and spectroscopic properties were consistent with the structure 11-O-benzoyl-sarcogenin-3-O-α-L-diginopyranosyl (1 → 4)-O-α-L-diginopyranosyl(1 → 4)-O-α-L-diginopyranoside.     

A pregnane ester diglycoside from periploca calophylla

A new pregnane ester diglycoside of ornogenin named as plocinine was isolated from the dried twigs of Periploca calophylla. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences its structure was established as 12,20-di-O-cinnamoyl sarcostin-3-O-α-L-oleandropyranosyl (1 → 4)-O-α-L-oleandropyranoside.     

The structure of leocardin,two epimers of a diterpenoid from Leonurus cardiaca

From the aerial part of Leonurus cardiaca a new labdane diterpenoid, leocardin, has been isolated and its structure was established by spectroscopic and chemical means. It has been shown to be 8β-acetoxy-9α,13α,15,16-bisepoxy-15-hydroxy-7-oxo-labdan-6β,19-olide present as a C-15 epimeric mixture.     

A neo-clerodane glucoside and neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Teucrium flavum subsp. Glaucum

From the aerial part of Teucrium flavum subsp. glaucum a new neo-clerodane diterpenoid, teuflavin, and a new 19-nor-neo-clerodane glucoside, teuflavoside, have been isolated, besides the previously known diterpene teuflin. The structures of teuflavin (19-acetoxy-4α,18:15,16-diepoxy-6β-hydroxy-3-keto-neo-cleroda-13(16),14-diene-20,ξ,12S-hemiacetal) and teuflavoside (18-acetoxy-15,16-epoxy-19-nor-neo-cleroda-4,13(16),14-trien-20,12S-olid-6β-yl-2′-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside) were established by chemical and spectroscopic means and by correlation with known compounds. In addition, the previously known flavone salvigenin has also been obtained from the same source.     

Abietane diterpenoids from the root of Salvia lavandulaefolia

Two new derivatives of royleanone, 7α-ethoxyroyleanone and 7α-ethoxy-12-O-methyl-royleanone, besides the previously known diterpenes royleanone, 6,7-dehydroroyleanone, 7α-acetoxyroyleanone and inuroyleanol, have been isolated from the root of Salvia lavandulaefolia. The triterpenoid O-acetyloleanolic aldehyde has also been obtained from the same source.     

Chlorinated withanolides from Withania somnifera and Acnistus breviflorus

The structure of a new chlorinated withanolide isolated from the hybrid plants of Withania somnifera, chemotypes III (Israel) by Indian I, is established as the chlorohydrin of withanolide D (6α-chloro-4β,5β,20α_F-trihydroxy-l-oxo-22R-witha-2,24-dienolide). Two other known chlorinated withanolides had been isolated from different sources and additional data are provided, including the X-ray diffraction study of 4-deoxyphysalolactone (chlorohydrin of withanolide E). All available data are used for comparative analysis of the six known chlorinated withanolides. The origin of the chlorine atom in these compounds in the plants has been determined by carrying out a simple reaction of withanolide D with NaCl on silica gel.     

Teumarin a neo-clerodane diterpenoid from Teucrium marum

A new neo-clerodane diterpenoid, teumarin, was isolated from the aerial part of Teucrium marum. Its structure, 19-acetoxy-4α,18:15,16-diepoxy-2β,6β-dihydroxy-neo-cleroda-13(16),14-dien-20,12S-olide, was established by chemical and spectroscopic means and by comparison with closely related compounds.
