The aim of this study was to compare muscle force control and proprioception between conventional and new-generation experimental orthoses. Sixteen healthy subjects participated in a single-blind controlled trial in which two different types of orthosis were applied to the dominant knee or ankle, while the following variables were evaluated: muscle force control (accuracy), joint position sense, kinesthesia, static balance as well as subjective outcomes. The use of experimental orthoses resulted in better force accuracy during isometric knee extensions compared to conventional orthoses (P = 0.005). Moreover, the use of experimental orthoses resulted in better force accuracy during concentric (P = 0.010) and eccentric (P = 0.014) ankle plantar flexions and better knee joint kinesthesia in the flexed position (P = 0.004) compared to conventional orthoses. Subjective comfort (P < 0.001) and preference scores were higher with experimental orthoses compared to conventional ones. In conclusion, orthosis type affected static and dynamic muscle force control, kinesthesia, and perceived comfort in healthy subjects. New-generation experimental knee and ankle orthoses may thus be recommended for prophylactic joint bracing during physical activity and to improve the compliance for orthosis use, particularly in patients who require long-term bracing.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate skin temperature of the soles of the feet before and after a provoked asymmetrical running. Seventeen recreational male runners performed two 15 min running tests in the same session. In the first test, participants performed running without modifying their running technique (control condition). In the second running test, they repeated the same protocol using an ankle weight of 1.5 kg in the non-dominant ankle (asymmetrical condition). Rate of perceive exertion, heart rate and spatio-temporal parameters were measured during the running tests. Skin temperature was measured with an infrared camera before and after each condition. Generally, comparing both lower limbs, non-preferred limb (with the ankle weight) had lower contact time (p < 0.001 and ES > 0.8), higher stride length (p < 0.05 and ES > 0.3) and higher stride frequency in asymmetrical condition (p < 0.01 and ES > 0.4). However, no differences were observed on skin temperature between both feet in the two conditions in any of the regions of interest assessed (p > 0.05). Although the asymmetry generation model used provoked technical asymmetries in spatio-temporal parameters during running, no thermal asymmetries were observed between preferred and non-preferred sole of the foot. These results suggested the lower importance of mechanical than physiological mechanisms on skin temperature during running.  相似文献

Achilles tendinopathy is a common injury in running sports however the exact etiology of Achilles injury is still unclear. In recent years, altered neuromotor recruitment patterns of the triceps surae have been hypothesized to create differential intra-tendinous loads leading to pathology; however, this hypothesis has not been investigated. Further, the effect foot orthoses may have on neuromotor recruitment of the triceps surae in Achilles tendinopathy has not been investigated. Methods: The electromyographic activity of the triceps surae was recorded during an over-ground running task. Fifteen Achilles injured participants and 19 asymptomatic controls were assessed in a footwear only condition. The Achilles injured participants were also assessed running in a pre-fabricated foot orthoses. Results: In Achilles injured participants, there was a significant difference between soleus and lateral gastrocnemius offset times during running compared to the asymptomatic controls (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in triceps surae muscle activity between the footwear only and footwear and orthoses condition in the Achilles injured participants. Conclusions: The finding that triceps surae activity is altered in participants with Achilles tendinopathy may have clinical importance as it suggests that intra-tendinous loads are altered which may contribute to pathological changes. Further, foot orthoses have no immediate effect on the neuromotor control of the triceps surae.  相似文献

Anti-pronation orthoses, like medially posted insoles (MPI), have traditionally been used to treat various of lower limb problems. Yet, we know surprisingly little about their effects on overall foot motion and lower limb mechanics across walking and running, which represent highly different loading conditions. To address this issue, multi-segment foot and lower limb mechanics was examined among 11 overpronating men with normal (NORM) and MPI insoles during walking (self-selected speed 1.70 ± 0.19 m/s vs 1.72 ± 0.20 m/s, respectively) and running (4.04 ± 0.17 m/s vs 4.10 ± 0.13 m/s, respectively). The kinematic results showed that MPI reduced the peak forefoot eversion movement in respect to both hindfoot and tibia across walking and running when compared to NORM (p < 0.05–0.01). No differences were found in hindfoot eversion between conditions. The kinetic results showed no insole effects in walking, but during running MPI shifted center of pressure medially under the foot (p < 0.01) leading to an increase in frontal plane moments at the hip (p < 0.05) and knee (p < 0.05) joints and a reduction at the ankle joint (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that MPI primarily controlled the forefoot motion across walking and running. While kinetic response to MPI was more pronounced in running than walking, kinematic effects were essentially similar across both modes. This suggests that despite higher loads placed upon lower limb during running, there is no need to have a stiffer insoles to achieve similar reduction in the forefoot motion than in walking.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between locomotor performance and temperature in Liolaemus pictus argentinus, from the Andean-Patagonian forest, Argentina. We determined the running speed in long and sprint runs at four different body temperatures, the panting threshold, and minimum critical temperature. The results are discussed in relation to body temperature in the field and thermal preference in the laboratory (Tpref). L. p. argentinus achieved higher speed in sprint runs than in long runs at all temperatures. In order to know if pregnancy constrains performance in this viviparous species, the differences between pregnant females and the other adults were analysed. Pregnant females were at a disadvantage when running long distances, but in sprint runs they were able to run as efficiently as the rest of the individuals, suggesting that they mainly use sprint runs and this may explain their conspicuous more-withdrawn behaviour. In long runs, the performance optimal temperature for L. p. argentinus (To=30.7 °C) was below the 25th percentile for all body temperatures selected in the laboratory (set-point range of Tpref=34.6-37.9 °C), but similar to the mean field body temperature (32.1 °C). However, in sprint runs the To (36.3 °C) was within the set-point range of Tpref. The mean panting threshold (42.8 °C) and the mean minimum critical temperature (6.9 °C) were similar to those of other liolaemids. The results are evidence that L. p. argentinus is well-adapted to the temperatures available in their environment and that the species has a Tpref that allows the achievement of maximal locomotor performance in the most frequently used and probably the most important run type, the sprint run.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of cold exposure discontinuation on local cold tolerance of older retired female haenyeos in Korea. A total of 30 older women participated in this study: older retired haenyeos (89 ± 4 y in age, N = 10), active haenyeos (current divers) (75 ± 4 y, N = 10), and age-matched non-divers (75 ± 6 y, N = 10). Our criterion for local cold tolerance was cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) of the finger. Active haenyeos showed greater local cold tolerance in terms of higher minimum temperature of the left finger during immersion and recovery than the other two groups (P < 0.05). Furthermore, active haenyeos showed higher skin temperatures of the right finger and left foot as well (P < 0.05). Older retired haenyeos displayed the second best minimum finger temperature both during immersion and during recovery (15 min and 20 min), whereas their local cold tolerance was evaluated as inferior to active haenyeos and the age-matched non-divers in CIVD frequency, finger pain sensation, thermal comfort, and finger temperature during the earlier period of recovery (5 min and 10 min). These results suggested that older retired haenyeos’ cold tolerance in their extremities disappeared in terms of finger temperature in their initial recovery periods, but that they might still retain cold adaptation in terms of minimum finger temperature or later recovery responses, even though the attributes were not marked as much as those of active haenyeos.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to determine if whole-body shearing would effect gross thermoregulation in alpacas. Eight mature, intact male alpacas were randomly assigned to one of two groups and maintained in outdoor pastures with adequate artificial shade from June through August (summer climate) in east central Alabama, USA. Group one animals (N=4) were sheared to remove all fiber to within 2 cm of their skin. Group 2 animals (N=4) were left non-sheared. Sheared alpacas tended to have lower rectal temperatures during high ambient temperatures than did non-sheared alpacas (P=0.06). Thermographic studies of the scrotum revealed cooler surface temperatures in sheared versus non-sheared alpacas (P=0.05). Temperatures in the right medial thigh of sheared animals were 0.9°C cooler than the thigh region of non-sheared animals in the morning (P<0.03). Right medial thigh temperatures were 1.6°C cooler in sheared alpacas in the afternoon (P<0.01). Significant positive correlations were found in non-sheared animals between ambient temperature and rectal temperature in the morning (r=0.612, P=0.014). In sheared animals during the morning significant positive correlations were established between the Heat Stress Index (HSI) and the right medial thigh surface temperatures (r=0.648, P=0.003), the HSI and rectal temperature (r=0.729, P=0.0003), the ambient temperature and right medial thigh surface temperature (r=0.485, P=0.04), and the ambient temperature and the rectal temperature (r=0.823, P<0.0001). In the afternoon a significant positive correlation was found in the sheared alpacas between the HSI and the right medial thigh surface temperature, rectal temperature and surface scrotal temperature (r=0.538, P=0.02, r=0.543, P=0.019 and r=0.522, P=0.045), respectively. These data indicate that whole-body shearing of alpacas could have a beneficial effect on thermoregulation when used as a preventative measure against heat stress. Shearing may assist heat dissipation resulting in a cooler surface body temperature and rectal temperature in alpacas when challenged by the heat and humidity experienced in the summer months in the southeastern United States.  相似文献

Late gestating sows are susceptible to high ambient temperatures, possibly causing farrowing complications and reducing piglet survival. This experiment aimed to quantify in the days leading up to farrowing the impact of sow heat stress (HS) on farrowing physiology and survival of the piglets. Pregnant primiparous sows (gilts) were allocated to either thermoneutral control (CON, n = 8; constant 20 °C) or cyclical HS conditions (n = 8; 0900 h to 1700 h, 30 °C; 1700 h to 0900 h, 28 °C) from d 110 of gestation until farrowing completion. Gilt respiration rate, skin temperature and rectal temperature were recorded daily, and farrowing duration was quantified by video analyses. Blood samples were collected from the piglet umbilical vein at birth. At 48 h of age, piglet growth was quantified by morphometric analyses. The thermal exposure model induced HS and respiratory alkalosis in the gilts, as indicated by increased respiration rate, rectal temperature, skin temperature (all P < 0.001), plasma cortisol (P = 0.01) and blood pH (P < 0.001). Heat-stressed gilts took longer to start expelling placentae (P = 0.003), although the active farrowing duration was not significantly different between treatments. Stillbirth rates were higher in the HS group (P < 0.001), with surviving piglets at birth having lower umbilical vein partial pressure of oxygen (P = 0.04), oxygen saturation rate (P = 0.03) and tending to have increased lactate concentrations (P = 0.07). At birth, piglet skin meconium staining scores were greater in the HS group (P = 0.022). At 48 h of age, piglets from the HS group had reduced small intestinal length (P = 0.02), reduced jejunal crypt depth (P = 0.02) and lighter absolute brain weight (P = 0.001). In contrast, piglet BW, growth rate, relative organ weight and small intestinal mucosal barrier function did not change between treatments. Collectively, these findings demonstrated gilt HS during late gestation caused farrowing complications and reduced the umbilical oxygen supply to the piglets at parturition, leading to increased risks of piglet stillbirth with implications on impaired neonatal survivability and development.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to verify self-care guidelines together with lower limb home exercises alter ankle and foot plantar pressure and alignment in patient with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) measuring health and sociodemographic factors. The health factors analyzed were sensitivity and circulation aspects, risk rating, and neuropathy symptom score, ankle and foot alignment (photogrammetry), plantar pressures, and postural stability (baropodometry) before and after administering these guidelines and home exercises in 97 patients type 2 DM during 10 months. The self-care guidelines and exercises changed the forefoot alignment (Right Foot – Initial vs Final, p = 0.04; Left Foot, P<0.01), the center of the force displacement in the mediolateral (Right Foot - Initial versus Final, p = 0.02; Left Foot, P<0.01), and the anterior-posterior (Right foot - Initial versus Final, p = 0.01) direction, and body balance (Initial versus Final, p = 0.02). There was no change in the remaining assessed parameters. Self-care associated with the guidelines for home exercises for the lower limbs in patients with type 2 DM are effective in maintaining and improving the alignment of the feet, mediolateral stability and prevention of complications.

The aim of this article was to compare plasma estrone sulfate (E1SO4), clinical biochemistry, and milk yield of dairy cows carrying a female fetus from a bull (BULL) or from its clone (CLONE), evaluating also the relationship between the former variables and the birth weight of the newborn. Sixteen recipient dairy Friesian heifers (10 BULL and 7 CLONE) received a female embryo, obtained by in vitro embryo production and sexing by polymerase chain reaction with the semen of the BULL or the CLONE. Blood samples on all cows were obtained before feed distribution in the morning from jugular vein from 4 weeks before to 4 weeks after calving, to be analyzed for metabolic profile. The samples from late gestation were also analyzed for E1SO4 concentration. To separately assess the effect of calf birth weight (CBW), data were categorized as follows: low (<39 kg; BWT-A), mid (39–46 kg; BWT-B), and high (>46 kg; BWT-C). The plasma concentrations of β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB, P = 0.019), Na (P = 0.002), Cl (P = 0.026), strong cation–anion balance (P = 0.020), total bilirubin (P = 0.054), and α1-globulin (P = 0.044) were higher in prepartum BULL recipients than those in CLONE, whereas BHB (P = 0.021) and Mg (P = 0.090) were higher in postpartum BULL recipients, while no differences were recorded in the remaining postpartum parameters. The CBW class had significant interaction with week of gestation on antepartum plasma estrone sulfate (P = 0.021), whereas CBW per se affected antepartum plasma BHB (P = 0.021), and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA; P = 0.011) being higher in BWT-C which also had the lower NEFA concentration during postpartum. Milk yield was unaffected by the sire used, both for quantitative and qualitative aspects. Cows carrying heavier fetus (BWT-C) had a different lactation affected by month compared with the other 2 CBW groups. From these results, there were no differences between BULL and CLONE recipients. Estrone sulfate, BHB, and NEFA may be used to predict CBW and provide different nutritional management during gestation.  相似文献

Rapid cooling after acute hyperthermia may cause a sustained increase in body temperature and exacerbate intestinal damage in pigs. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate the temporal effects of rapid and gradual cooling on body temperature response and intestinal integrity after acute hyperthermia in pigs. In three repetitions, 54 pigs [83.3 ± 6.7 kg initial body weight (BW)], balanced by sex were exposed to thermoneutral conditions for 6 h (TN; n = 6 pigs/repetition; 21.1 ± 2.0°C), or heat stress conditions (HS; 39.3 ± 1.6°C) for 3 h, followed by a 3 h recovery period of gradual cooling [HSGC; n = 6 pigs/repetition; gradual decrease from HS to TN conditions] or rapid cooling [HSRC; n = 6 pigs/repetition; rapid TN exposure and cold water (4.0°C) dousing every 30 min for 1.5 h]. Feed was withheld throughout the entire 6 h period, but water was provided ad libitum. Gastrointestinal (TGI) and rectal (TR) temperatures were recorded every 15 min during the HS and recovery periods. Six pigs per repetition (n = 2/treatment) were euthanized and jejunal and ileal samples were collected for histology immediately after (d 0), 2 d after, and 4 d after the recovery period. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. Overall, rapid cooling reduced TR and TGI (P < 0.01; 0.95°C and 0.74°C, respectively) compared to gradual cooling. Jejunal villus height was reduced overall (P = 0.02; 14.01%) in HSGC compared to HSRC and TN pigs. Jejunal villus height-to-crypt depth ratio was reduced overall (P = 0.05; 16.76%) in HSGC compared to TN pigs. Ileal villus height was reduced overall (P < 0.01; 16.95%) in HSGC compared to HSRC and TN pigs. No other intestinal morphology differences were detected. In summary, HSRC did not cause a sustained increase in body temperature and did not negatively impact biomarkers of intestinal integrity in pigs.  相似文献

This study investigated the acute effect of active recovery (AR) following fatigue induced by 80 three-second maximal voluntary isometric plantar flexion contractions (MVICs) in 12 young men. AR consisted of a total of 180 voluntary isometric ramp contractions of the plantar flexors (0.75-s contraction/relaxation) targeting 10% of MVIC torque. MVIC torque, voluntary activation and root mean square values of electromyographic signals for the triceps surae normalized by each peak-to-peak amplitude of compound motor action potential were determined before, and immediately, 10, 20 and 30 min after the fatiguing task. Evoked torques were similarly assessed except for immediately after it. The AR and passive recovery were randomly performed on two days by each participant between 5 min and 10 min after the fatiguing task. For all the parameters other than MVIC torque, there was no significant difference between the conditions at any time point. MVIC torque decreased significantly immediately after the fatiguing task regardless of condition (P < 0.05), and the corresponding decrease in MVIC torque recovered 30 min after the fatiguing task only in AR (P < 0.05). These results suggest an acute positive effect of AR on recovery of neuromuscular function and/or contractile properties after fatigue.  相似文献

PurposeTo compare the acute effect of running and bicycling of an equivalent cumulative load on knee cartilage composition and morphometry in healthy young men. A secondary analysis investigated the relationship between activity history and the change in cartilage composition after activity.MethodsIn fifteen men (25.8±4.2 years), the vertical ground reaction force was measured to determine the cumulative load exposure of a 15-min run. The vertical pedal reaction force was recorded during bicycling to define the bicycling duration of an equivalent cumulative load. On separate visits that were spaced on average 17 days apart, participants completed these running and bicycling bouts. Mean cartilage transverse relaxation times (T2) were determined for cartilage on the tibia and weight-bearing femur before and after each exercise. T2 was measured using a multi-echo spin-echo sequence and 3T MRI. Cartilage of the weight bearing femur and tibia was segmented using a highly-automated segmentation algorithm. Activity history was captured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire.ResultsThe response of T2 to bicycling and running was different (p=0.019; mean T2: pre-running=34.27 ms, pre-bicycling=32.93 ms, post-running=31.82 ms, post-bicycling=32.36 ms). While bicycling produced no change (−1.7%, p=0.300), running shortened T2 (−7.1%, p<0.001). Greater activity history predicted smaller changes in tibial, but not femoral, T2.ConclusionsChanges in knee cartilage vary based on activity type, independent of total load exposure, in healthy young men. Smaller changes in T2 were observed after bicycling relative to running. Activity history was inversely related to tibial T2, suggesting cartilage conditioning.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether boys and men utilise different control strategies whilst hopping. Eleven boys (11–12 yr old) and ten men completed hopping at 1.5 Hz, 3.0 Hz and at their preferred frequency. A footswitch measured contact and flight times, from which leg stiffness was calculated. Simultaneously, surface electromyograms (EMGs) of selected lower limb muscles were recorded and quantified for each 30 ms period during the first 120 ms post-ground contact. At 1.5 Hz there were no differences between the groups in relative stiffness or muscle activity. At 3.0 Hz men had significantly shorter contact times (P = 0.013), longer flight times (P = 0.002), greater relative stiffness (P = 0.01) and significantly greater soleus (P = 0.012) and vastus lateralis (P < 0.001) activity during the initial 30 ms post-ground contact. At the preferred frequency men hopped significantly faster than the boys (P = 0.007), with greater leg stiffness (P < 0.01) and with more extensor activity in most time periods. Boys and men demonstrated similar control strategies when hopping at a slow frequency, but when hopping frequency increased men were able to better increase feedforward and reflex muscle activity to hop with greater relative stiffness.  相似文献

Diabetic foot ulcers are caused by moderate repetitive plantar stresses in the presence of peripheral neuropathy. In severe cases, the development of these foot ulcers can lead to lower extremity amputations. Plantar pressure measurements have been considered a capable predictor of ulceration sites in the past, but some investigations have pointed out inconsistencies when solely relying on this method. The other component of ground reaction forces/stresses, shear, has been understudied due to a lack of adequate equipment. Recent articles reported the potential clinical significance of shear in diabetic ulcer etiology. With the lack of adequate tools, plantar temperature has been used as an alternative method for determining plantar triaxial loading and/or shear. However, this method has not been previously validated. The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential association between exercise-induced plantar temperature increase and plantar stresses. Thirteen healthy individuals walked on a treadmill for 10 minutes at 3.2 km/h. Pre and post-exercise temperature profiles were obtained with a thermal camera. Plantar triaxial stresses were quantified with a custom-built stress plate. A statistically significant correlation was observed between peak shear stress (PSS) and temperature increase (r=0.78), but not between peak resultant stress (PRS) and temperature increase (r=0.46). Plantar temperature increase could predict the location of PSS and PRS in 23% and 39% of the subjects, respectively. Only a moderate linear relationship was established between triaxial plantar stresses and walking-induced temperature increase. Future research will investigate the value of nonlinear models in predicting plantar loading through foot temperature.  相似文献

ObjectiveBone health in older individuals with HIV infection has not been well studied. This study aimed to compare bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular bone score (TBS), and bone markers between HIV-infected men and age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched HIV-uninfected men aged ≥60 years. We investigated the associations of risk factors related to fracture with BMD, TBS, and bone markers in HIV-infected men.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 45 HIV-infected men receiving antiretroviral therapy and 42 HIV-uninfected men. Medical history, BMD and TBS measurements, and laboratory tests related to bone health were assessed in all the participants. HIV-related factors known to be associated with bone loss were assessed in the HIV-infected men.ResultsThe mean BMD, TBS, and osteopenia or osteoporosis prevalence were similar among the cases and controls. The HIV-infected men had significantly higher mean N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen and C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen levels. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that low BMI (lumbar spine, P = .015; femoral neck, P = .018; and total hip, P = .005), high C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen concentration (total hip, P = .042; and TBS, P = .010), and low vitamin D supplementation (TBS, P = .035) were independently associated with low BMD and TBS.ConclusionIn older HIV-infected men with a low fracture risk, the mean BMD and TBS were similar to those of the age- and BMI-matched controls. The mean bone marker levels were higher in the HIV group. Traditional risk factors for fracture, including low BMI, high C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen level, and low vitamin D supplementation, were significant predictors of low BMD and TBS.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine the influence of short-term exposure to endophyte-infected tall fescue on reproductive function of ram lambs. Rams (214 days of age) were fed a diet free of endophyte-infected fescue seed (EF; n = 8) or endophyte-infected fescue seed (EI; n = 9; 34% of diet; 4.8 μg g−1 ergovaline) for 6 weeks. Feed offered to EF rams, individually fed, was reduced to the average intake of EI lambs from previous day so that intake was similar between treatments and averaged 2.4% BW (DM basis), leading to daily intake of 33.7 μg ergovaline kg−1 BW for the EI fed lambs. Daily high ambient temperature for the trial ranged between 16 and 26 °C. Respiration rate and rectal temperature were measured at 14:00 daily. Blood was collected for serum concentrations of prolactin (weekly) and testosterone (twice weekly). Body weight and body condition scores (BCS; 1 = thin; 5 = fat) were determined every 14 days. Scrotal circumference, scrotal skin temperature, and semen characteristics were determined weekly. Rams were slaughtered after 6 weeks of feeding. Signs of fescue toxicosis in EI fed rams included increased rectal temperature (P < 0.001, R2 = 0.11) and respiration rate (day, P < 0.001, R2 = 0.25) when high ambient temperature exceeded 22 °C and reduced serum concentrations of prolactin (diet × day, P < 0.001). Body weight of EI fed rams tended to decrease after 36 days of feeding compared with EF fed rams (−3.0 kg versus 0.51 kg; P < 0.07) and BCS was similar between treatment throughout the trial. Serum concentrations of testosterone were greater in EI compared with EF fed rams (diet × day, P < 0.005, R2 = 0.08). Scrotal skin temperature, scrotal circumference, semen volume, percent sperm motility, and percent abnormal sperm were similar between treatments. Spermatozoa concentration tended to be greater in EF compared with EI fed rams after 43 days of feeding (P < 0.10; R2 = 0.15). Rate of forward movement of spermatozoa tended to increase at a greater rate between Days 8 and 29 in EF compared with EI fed rams (diet × day, P < 0.08). Feeding endophyte-infected fescue seed to ram lambs was associated with potential decreased fertility and increased serum concentrations of testosterone. Short term exposure of endophyte toxins to male ruminants may negatively impact reproductive responses. Feeding for longer periods may further reduce fertility and merits further research.  相似文献

While it is not uncommon for athletes to use foot orthoses to relieve pain and improve sports performance, little has been known about their effects on basketball performance. Free-throw basketball shooting is very important. However, fatigue deteriorates postural balance which might decrease free-throw shooting performance. This study investigated the effects of foot orthoses on dynamic balance and accuracy performance during free-throw shooting before and after physical fatigue was induced. Thirteen male recreational basketball players were tested with two foot orthoses (medial-arch support versus flat control) and fatigue conditions (before and after fatigue), when they performed standard free-throw shooting on a force platform. Results revealed that fatigue significantly increased coefficient of variance of medial-lateral center of pressure (CoP) excursion when participants worn flat control orthoses (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, foot orthoses improved dynamic balance during shooting as they significantly reduced total resultant and anterior-posterior sway excursions as well as resultant and anterior-posterior CoP velocities, and base of support area. Although this study found that fatigue and orthoses did not significantly affect the scores gained by free-throw shooting, the significant improvements in dynamic balance during shooting with the use of foot orthoses could have considerable impact on motor control during basketball shooting.  相似文献

A higher insulin level has been linked to the risk of prostate cancer promotion. However, several reports claim that there is no association between a higher insulin level and the risk of incident prostate cancer. In the present report, the insulin hypothesis was tested once more prospectively in men with a benign prostatic disorder. Three hundred and eighty-nine consecutive patients referred with lower urinary tract symptoms without clinical prostate cancer were included during 1994–2002. Follow-up was performed in 2006. Data were obtained from the Swedish National Cancer Register and the Regional Cancer Register, Oncological Centre, Göteborg, Sweden. At this follow-up, 44 of the patients included had developed prostate cancer. Men with prostate cancer diagnosis had a higher systolic (P < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.000), were more obese as measured by BMI (P = 0.010), waist (P = 0.007) and hip measurements (P = 0.041) than men who did not have prostate cancer diagnosis at follow-up. These men also had a higher uric acid level (P = 0.040), and a higher fasting serum insulin level (P = 0.023) than men who did not have prostate cancer diagnosis at follow-up. Following exclusion of T1a/b prostate cancer cases, the difference of the fasting serum insulin level between the groups was still significant (P = 0.038). Our data support the hypothesis that a higher insulin level is a promoter of prostate cancer. Moreover, our data suggest that the insulin level could be used as a marker of the risk of developing prostate cancer. The present findings also seem to confirm that prostate cancer is a component of the metabolic syndrome. Finally, our data generate the hypothesis that the metabolic syndrome conceals early prostate cancer.  相似文献

Background aimsThe aim of our study was to compare the effect of autologous stem cell therapy (SCT) and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) on diabetic foot disease (DFD) in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI).MethodsThirty-one patients with DFD and CLI treated by autologous stem cells and 30 patients treated by PTA were included in the study; 23 patients with the same inclusion criteria who could not undergo PTA or SCT formed the control group. Amputation-free survival, transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) and wound healing were assessed over 12 months.ResultsAmputation-free survival after 6 and 12 months was significantly greater in the SCT and PTA groups compared with controls (P = 0.001 and P = 0.0029, respectively) without significant differences between the active treatment groups. Increase in TcPO2 did not differ between SCT and PTA groups until 12 months (both Ps < 0.05 compared with baseline), whereas TcPO2 in the control group did not change over the follow-up period. More healed ulcers were observed up to 12 months in the SCT group compared with the PTA and control groups (84 versus 57.7 versus 44.4 %; P = 0.042).ConclusionsOur study showed comparable effects of SCT and PTA on CLI, a major amputation rate that was superior to conservative therapy in patients with diabetic foot and an observable effect of SCT on wound healing. Our results support SCT as a potential promising treatment in patients with CLI and diabetic foot.  相似文献
