Late gestating sows are susceptible to high ambient temperatures, possibly causing farrowing complications and reducing piglet survival. This experiment aimed to quantify in the days leading up to farrowing the impact of sow heat stress (HS) on farrowing physiology and survival of the piglets. Pregnant primiparous sows (gilts) were allocated to either thermoneutral control (CON, n = 8; constant 20 °C) or cyclical HS conditions (n = 8; 0900 h to 1700 h, 30 °C; 1700 h to 0900 h, 28 °C) from d 110 of gestation until farrowing completion. Gilt respiration rate, skin temperature and rectal temperature were recorded daily, and farrowing duration was quantified by video analyses. Blood samples were collected from the piglet umbilical vein at birth. At 48 h of age, piglet growth was quantified by morphometric analyses. The thermal exposure model induced HS and respiratory alkalosis in the gilts, as indicated by increased respiration rate, rectal temperature, skin temperature (all P < 0.001), plasma cortisol (P = 0.01) and blood pH (P < 0.001). Heat-stressed gilts took longer to start expelling placentae (P = 0.003), although the active farrowing duration was not significantly different between treatments. Stillbirth rates were higher in the HS group (P < 0.001), with surviving piglets at birth having lower umbilical vein partial pressure of oxygen (P = 0.04), oxygen saturation rate (P = 0.03) and tending to have increased lactate concentrations (P = 0.07). At birth, piglet skin meconium staining scores were greater in the HS group (P = 0.022). At 48 h of age, piglets from the HS group had reduced small intestinal length (P = 0.02), reduced jejunal crypt depth (P = 0.02) and lighter absolute brain weight (P = 0.001). In contrast, piglet BW, growth rate, relative organ weight and small intestinal mucosal barrier function did not change between treatments. Collectively, these findings demonstrated gilt HS during late gestation caused farrowing complications and reduced the umbilical oxygen supply to the piglets at parturition, leading to increased risks of piglet stillbirth with implications on impaired neonatal survivability and development.  相似文献

The impact of a social stress in gestation and an enriched pen in lactation on components of sow maternal behavior was studied in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment. At breeding, 41 sows were assigned to a social mixing stress treatment (T) during mid-gestation or a control group (C). During lactation, half of the T and C sows were housed in straw enriched pens (E) (1.57 m × 4.10 m) and the others in standard farrowing crates (S) (0.68 m × 2.10 m). The mixing stress consisted in introducing each T sow to the home pen of two unfamiliar sows twice for 1 week, from d 39 to 45 and 59 to 65 of gestation. Aggressive behavior was observed and lesion scores were taken to confirm that a social stress occurred. During lactation, the responses of sows to a simulated piglet crush test on d 3 and an isolated piglet playback test on d 21 were observed. Postural budgets of sows were automatically detected using accelerometers on d 5 and 19 of lactation. Sow-initiated social contacts with the piglets were observed continuously from video recordings on d 6 and 20 of lactation. Data were analyzed with a mixed models procedure. The social stress treatment had an impact on the response of sows to isolated piglet vocalizations with T sows showing longer latencies to respond vocally than C sows (P = 0.035). In early lactation, T sows spent more time lying ventrally than C sows (P = 0.007). Furthermore, the social stress had an impact on the space use in the enriched housing, with T sows spending less time in the nesting straw area of the pen than C sows (P = 0.018). Housing also impacted maternal behavior with E sows tending to spend more time lying ventrally than S sows in late lactation (P = 0.067) and tending to have more social contacts with their piglets than S sows in early lactation (P = 0.058). In conclusion, the social stress during gestation had a slight negative impact on sow maternal behavior, and while an enriched farrowing pen allowed for more opportunities to express maternal behavior, it did not counteract the negative effects of gestation stress.  相似文献

Rapid cooling after acute hyperthermia may cause a sustained increase in body temperature and exacerbate intestinal damage in pigs. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate the temporal effects of rapid and gradual cooling on body temperature response and intestinal integrity after acute hyperthermia in pigs. In three repetitions, 54 pigs [83.3 ± 6.7 kg initial body weight (BW)], balanced by sex were exposed to thermoneutral conditions for 6 h (TN; n = 6 pigs/repetition; 21.1 ± 2.0°C), or heat stress conditions (HS; 39.3 ± 1.6°C) for 3 h, followed by a 3 h recovery period of gradual cooling [HSGC; n = 6 pigs/repetition; gradual decrease from HS to TN conditions] or rapid cooling [HSRC; n = 6 pigs/repetition; rapid TN exposure and cold water (4.0°C) dousing every 30 min for 1.5 h]. Feed was withheld throughout the entire 6 h period, but water was provided ad libitum. Gastrointestinal (TGI) and rectal (TR) temperatures were recorded every 15 min during the HS and recovery periods. Six pigs per repetition (n = 2/treatment) were euthanized and jejunal and ileal samples were collected for histology immediately after (d 0), 2 d after, and 4 d after the recovery period. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED in SAS 9.4. Overall, rapid cooling reduced TR and TGI (P < 0.01; 0.95°C and 0.74°C, respectively) compared to gradual cooling. Jejunal villus height was reduced overall (P = 0.02; 14.01%) in HSGC compared to HSRC and TN pigs. Jejunal villus height-to-crypt depth ratio was reduced overall (P = 0.05; 16.76%) in HSGC compared to TN pigs. Ileal villus height was reduced overall (P < 0.01; 16.95%) in HSGC compared to HSRC and TN pigs. No other intestinal morphology differences were detected. In summary, HSRC did not cause a sustained increase in body temperature and did not negatively impact biomarkers of intestinal integrity in pigs.  相似文献

The medicinal plant Artemisia annua L. is well known for its antimalarial compound artemisinin and the antioxidant capacity of its active ingredients. However, low bioavailability of Artemisia annua L. limits its therapeutic potential, fermentation of Artemisia annua L. can improve its bioavailability. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of enzymatically-treated Artemisia annua L. (EA) on reproductive performance, antioxidant status, milk composition of heat-stressed sows and intestinal barrier integrity of their preweaning offspring. 135 multiparous sows of average parity 4.65 (Landrace × large white) at day 85 of pregnancy were randomly distributed into 3 treatments. Sows in the control group were housed at control rooms (temperature: 27.12 ± 0.18 °C, temperature-humidity index (THI): 70.90 ± 0.80) and fed the basal diet. Sows in the HS, HS + EA groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 or 1.0 g/kg EA respectively, and reared at heat stress rooms (temperature: 30.11 ± 0.16 °C, THI: 72.70 ± 0.60). Heat stress increased the malondialdehyde (MDA) content, reduced the activities of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) of sows and piglets, and seriously compromised the antioxidant capacity of the sows and the intestinal integrity of their offspring. However, dietary supplementation of 1.0 g/kg EA reduced the MDA content, increased the activities of T-SOD and T-AOC in serum, colostrum, and milk of heat-stressed sows, and increased colostrum yield and 14-d milk fat content. EA supplementation also increased piglet weaning weight and the activities of T-SOD and T-AOC in serum. In addition, the abundances of intestinal tight junction proteins claudin-1 and occludin were up-regulated in piglets in EA-supplemented group. In conclusion, dietary EA supplementation at 1.0 g/kg can alleviate the oxidative stress in heat-stressed sows, improve the antioxidant capacity in both sows and their offspring, and promote the intestinal barrier integrity in their offspring. EA may be a potent dietary supplement that ameliorates oxidative stress in livestock production by improving the antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of chronic cyclic heat stress (HS) on the intestinal morphology, oxidative stress and cecal bacterial communities of broilers. One-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) male broilers (n = 100) were acclimated for 3 weeks and then randomly allocated into two groups, normal control (NC) group (22 ± 1 °C, 24 h/day) and HS group (32 ± 1 °C, 10 h/day lasted for 2 weeks). At 35 d of age, intestinal segments (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) and cecal digesta were collected for detection. HS affected intestinal morphology, inducing epithelial cell abscission, inflammatory cell infiltration, and lamina propria edema. Compared with the NC group, HS significantly decreased (P < 0.01) villus height (VH) and the VH-to-crypt depth (CD) ratio (VCR), increased (P < 0.05) CD in the duodenum and ileum, but had no effect on the VH in the jejunum. Moreover, HS induced oxidative stress with antioxidant enzymes activity decreasing (P < 0.05) while malondialdehyde (MDA) content increasing (P < 0.05) in small intestine. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that MDA content was negatively correlated with VH (P < 0.05). The result of 16S rRNA sequencing showed that HS exposure impacted cecal microbiota alpha diversity (phylogenetic diversity whole-tree index) and beta diversity. Based on principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) plots for weighted UniFrac metrics and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA), there were 8 discriminative features at the genus level (linear discriminant analysis score > 2). Parabacteroides, Saccharimonas, Romboutsia and Weissella were reduced, while Anaerofustis, Pseudonocardia, Rikenella and Tyzzerella were enriched in heat-stressed broilers. Collectively, these results indicated that chronic cyclic HS induced oxidative stress that caused damage to intestinal villus-crypt structures, and then altered the cecal microflora profile.  相似文献

The current study utilized Ussing chambers to examine the impact of supplementing maternal gestation and/or lactation diets with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) provided via a protected fish oil (PFO) product on intestinal fatty acid profiles and ex vivo glucose uptake in the jejunum of weanling piglets. Jejunum tissues were enriched with n-3 PUFA as a result of feeding the sows the PFO during gestation and/or lactation (P<.05). Glucose uptake improved by twofold (P<.042) in intestinal preparations obtained from the offspring of sows fed PFO during gestation or throughout gestation/lactation versus lactation alone. This was also reflected in the jejunum protein expressions of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1). Furthermore, adding docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or an AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) agonist to the chamber buffer improved glucose uptake (P<.05) in intestinal preparations obtained from the offspring fed the control diet, devoid of the PFO product and containing minimal concentrations of n-3 PUFA. Collectively, these data indicate two important points. First, long-term exposure to n-3 PUFA via the maternal gestation diet effectively enhances glucose uptake in the weanling piglet, and the underlying mechanism may be associated with changes in the intestinal fatty acid profile. Secondly, there is an apparent direct and acute effect of DHA that is achieved within a time frame that precludes substantial changes in the intestinal fatty acid profile. Additionally, both mechanisms may involve activation of AMPK. Thus, n-3 PUFA delivered in utero and postnatally via the maternal diet may help the offspring adapt quickly to rapidly changing diets early in life and allow optimal nutrient uptake.  相似文献

Heat stress jeopardizes animal's growth and health mainly through induction of oxidative stress and inflammation. The current study investigated the effects of Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MOLP) supplementation on productive performance and intestinal health of rabbits under chronic heat stress (HS). Young New Zealand White rabbits (male) at the age of 32 weeks (n = 21, mean body weight of 3318 ± 171 g) for four weeks' period were reared on commercial pelleted diet and divided into three groups: control (CON, 25 °C), HS (35 ± 1 °C) and HS (35 ± 1 °C) with MOLP (HSM) supplemented orally (200 mg/kg body weight). The results demonstrated that rabbits in the HSM group had reduced rectal temperature, respiration rate and improved FCR due to improved daily gain and better crude fiber (NDF) digestibility (P < 0.05) compared with HS group. MOLP improved intestinal integrity and function as indicated by lower serum diamine oxidase level and increased jejunal weight, length, villus height and ratio of villus height to crypt depth than heat-stressed rabbits. MOLP reversed the increased levels of serum cortisol, metabolic indicators i.e. glucose, insulin, and reduced concentrations of serum triiodothyronine. MOLP supplementation also significantly down-regulated the mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (α), heat shock protein A2, glutathione peroxidase-1, interleukin (IL)-1α and increased the expression of IL-6. In conclusion, MOLP supplementation could enhance intestinal health along with production and metabolic indicators by alleviating the oxidative stress and inflammatory response in small intestine of hyper-thermic rabbits.  相似文献

Human cells migrate between mother and fetus during pregnancy and persist in the respective host for long-term after birth. Fetal microchimerism occurs also in twins sharing a common placenta or chorion. Whether microchimerism occurs in multiparous mammals such as the domestic pig, where fetuses have separate placentas and chorions, is not well understood. Here, we assessed cell chimerism in litters of wild-type sows inseminated with semen of transposon transgenic boars. Segregation of three independent monomeric transposons ensured an excess of transgenic over non-transgenic offspring in every litter. Transgenic siblings (n = 35) showed robust ubiquitous expression of the reporter transposon encoding a fluorescent protein, and provided an unique resource to assess a potential cell trafficking to non-transgenic littermates (n = 7) or mothers (n = 4). Sensitive flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and real-time PCR provided no evidence for microchimerism in porcine littermates, or piglets and their mothers in both blood and solid organs. These data indicate that the epitheliochorial structure of the porcine placenta effectively prevents cellular exchange during gestation.  相似文献

Reduced protein levels in nursery diets have been associated with a lower risk of postweaning diarrhea, but the interaction with CP levels in maternal diet on the performance of the offspring remains unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of protein content in sow gestation and piglet nursery diets on the performance of the piglets until slaughter. This was studied in a 2 × 2 factorial trial (35 sows, 209 piglets), with higher or lower (H or L) dietary CP in sow diets (168 vs 122 g CP/kg) during late gestation. A standard lactation feed was provided for all sows (160 g CP/kg). For both sow treatments, half of the litters received a higher or lower CP in the piglet nursery diet (210 vs 166 g CP/kg). This resulted in four possible treatment combinations: HH, HL, LH and LL, with sow treatment as first and piglet treatment as second letter. For each phase, all diets were iso-energetic and had a similar level of essential amino acids. Ps*p is the p-value for the interaction effect between sow and piglet treatment. In the nursery phase (3.5–9 weeks of age), a tendency toward interaction between piglet and sow treatments with feed efficiency (Ps*p = 0.08) was observed with HH having the highest gain:feed ratio (G:F) (0.74 ± 0.01), LH the lowest (0.70 ± 0.01) and the other two groups intermediate. In the growing-finishing phase, an interaction was observed between the piglet and sow diets with decreased G:F for LH (Ps*p = 0.04) and a tendency toward interaction with increased daily feed intake for LH (Ps*p = 0.07). The sow diet showed a tendency toward a long-lasting effect on the dressing percentage and meat thickness of the offspring, which was higher for the progeny of H sows (Ps < 0.01 and Ps = 0.02, respectively). At 23 weeks, serum urea concentrations tended to be lower for the HH and LL groups (Ps*p = 0.07). Fecal consistency scores were higher at day 10–day 14 after weaning for piglets from L sows (Ps = 0.03 and Ps < 0.01, respectively). At day 7 after weaning, fecal consistency score was higher for piglets fed the higher protein diet (Pp < 0.01). At 8 weeks of age, the apparent total tract digestibility of CP (ATTDCP) interacted between piglet and sow diet (Ps*p = 0.02), with HH showing the highest digestibility values. In conclusion, the protein levels in sow late-gestation and piglet nursery diets interacted with feed efficiency, ATTDCP and serum urea concentrations in the nursery phase.  相似文献

The effect of maternal dietary selenium (Se) and gestation on the concentrations of Se and zinc (Zn) in the porcine fetus were determined. Mature gilts were randomly assigned to treatments of either adequate (0.39 ppm Se) or low (0.05 ppm Se) dietary Se. Gilts were bred and fetuses were collected throughout gestation. Concentrations of Se in maternal whole blood and liver decreased during gestation in sows fed the low-Se diet compared to sows fed the Se-supplemented diet. Maternal intake of Se did not affect the concentration of Se in the whole fetus; however, the concentration of Se in fetal liver was decreased in fetuses of sows fed the low-Se diet. Although fetal liver Se decreased in both treatments as gestation progressed, the decrease was greater in liver of fetuses from sows fed the low-Se diet. Dietary Se did not affect concentrations of Zn in maternal whole blood or liver or in the whole fetus and fetal liver. The concentration of Se in fetal liver was lower but the concentration of Zn was greater than in maternal liver when sows were fed the adequate Se diet. These results indicate that maternal intake of Se affects fetal liver Se and newborn piglets have lower liver Se concentrations compared to their dams, regardless of the Se intake of sows during gestation. Thus, the piglet is more susceptible Se deficiency than the sow.  相似文献

Background

We aimed to determine the effect of feeding transgenic maize to sows during gestation and lactation on maternal and offspring immunity and to assess the fate of transgenic material.

Methodology/Principal Findings

On the day of insemination, sows were assigned to one of two treatments (n = 12/treatment); 1) non-Bt control maize diet or 2) Bt-MON810 maize diet, which were fed for ∼143 days throughout gestation and lactation. Immune function was assessed by leukocyte phenotyping, haematology and Cry1Ab-specific antibody presence in blood on days 0, 28 and 110 of gestation and at the end of lactation. Peripheral-blood mononuclear cell cytokine production was investigated on days 28 and 110 of gestation. Haematological analysis was performed on offspring at birth (n = 12/treatment). Presence of the cry1Ab transgene was assessed in sows'' blood and faeces on day 110 of gestation and in blood and tissues of offspring at birth. Cry1Ab protein presence was assessed in sows'' blood during gestation and lactation and in tissues of offspring at birth. Blood monocyte count and percentage were higher (P<0.05), while granulocyte percentage was lower (P<0.05) in Bt maize-fed sows on day 110 of gestation. Leukocyte count and granulocyte count and percentage were lower (P<0.05), while lymphocyte percentage was higher (P<0.05) in offspring of Bt maize-fed sows. Bt maize-fed sows had a lower percentage of monocytes on day 28 of lactation and of CD4+CD8+ lymphocytes on day 110 of gestation, day 28 of lactation and overall (P<0.05). Cytokine production was similar between treatments. Transgenic material or Cry1Ab-specific antibodies were not detected in sows or offspring.

Conclusions/Significance

Treatment differences observed following feeding of Bt maize to sows did not indicate inflammation or allergy and are unlikely to be of major importance. These results provide additional data for Bt maize safety assessment.  相似文献

Iron-deficiency anemia is a public health concern that frequently occurs in pregnant mammals and neonatal offspring. Ferrous N-carbamylglycinate chelate (Fe-CGly) is a newly designed iron fortifier with proven effects in iron-deficient rats and weanling piglets. However, the effects of this new compound on pregnant mammals are unknown. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Fe-CGly on sow reproductive performance and iron status of both sows and neonatal piglets. A total of 40 large-white sows after second parity were randomly assigned to two groups (n=20). They were receiving a diet including 80 mg Fe/kg as FeSO4 or Fe-CGly, respectively, from day 85 of gestation to parturition. The serum (day 110 of pregnancy) and placentas of sows were sampled. Litter size, mean weight of live born piglets, birth (live) litter weight, number of live born piglets, and the number of still-born piglets, mummies, and weak-born piglets were recorded. Once delivered, eight litters were randomly selected from the 20 litters per treatment, and one new-born male piglet (1.503±0.142 kg) from each selected litter was slaughtered within 3 h after birth from the selected litters, without colostrum ingestion. The serum, longissimus muscle, liver and kidneys of the piglets were collected. The iron status of the serum samples and the messenger RNA level of iron-related genes in the placenta, liver and kidney were analyzed. The results showed that litter weight of live born piglets was higher (P=0.030) in the Fe-CGly group (19.86 kg) than in the FeSO4 group (17.34 kg). Fe-CGly significantly increased placental iron concentration (P<0.05) of sows. It also significantly increased iron saturation and reduced the total iron-binding capacity of piglets (P<0.05) at birth. However, the results revealed that supplementation of Fe-CGly in sows reduced liver and kidney iron concentration of neonatal piglets (P<0.05), indicating decreased iron storage. In addition, the concentration of iron in the colostrum was not significantly changed. Therefore, the present results suggested that replacement of maternal FeSO4 supplement with Fe-CGly in the late-gestating period for sows could improve litter birth weight, probably via enhanced iron transportation in the placenta.  相似文献

Octylphenol is an industrial chemical with estrogenic effects both in vitro and in vivo. In this study the effects of short-term intramuscular exposure to 0.1 mg/kg of body weight and 1.0 mg/kg of body weight in early gestation were evaluated in pregnant sows with respect to reproductive parameters in the newborn male piglets, as compared with male piglets from unexposed control sows. The male piglets were examined immediately after birth with respect to the macroscopic appearance of the reproductive organs and testosterone concentration in serum. It was not possible to identify any estrogenic effects in the newborn male piglets. However, in the sows exposed at the highest level of octylphenol, there was an increased number of stillborn piglets and an increased proportion of sows with stillborn piglets in the litter (P < 0.05). This was an unexpected finding which has not been reported previously.  相似文献

Colostrum and milk are the first nutrient sources for newborn piglets. In addition, n-3 fatty acids (FAs) and their oxygenated derivatives (oxylipins) have the capacity to modulate immune components. The aim of the current study was to include a fish oil rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in sow diets to promote an increase of anti-inflammatory molecules in colostrum and milk to benefit piglets. Thirty-six sows were randomly assigned from insemination to the end of lactation to either a control diet with animal fat (15 g/kg in gestation and 30 g/kg in lactation) or an n-3 diet in which animal fat was totally (gestation) or half (lactation) replaced by an equivalent amount of solid fish oil. Performance of sows and piglets was monitored during the study. Colostrum and milk samples were obtained after the birth of the first piglet and at weaning, respectively. From all samples (n = 18 per treatment), FAs were quantified by gas chromatography and immunoglobulins and cytokines by ELISA. Three samples per treatment were randomly selected to analyse oxylipin composition by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In colostrum and in milk, the n-3 FA (P = 0.020 and P < 0.001), particularly EPA (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001) and DHA (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001), and also their oxygenated derivatives were increased in samples from sows fed n-3 diet. Fish oil had no effect on immunoglobulin concentrations, but reduced tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) (P = 0.011) and a tendency to reduce interleukin 10 (IL10) (P = 0.059) were observed in milk. In conclusion, fish oil in sow diets increased n-3 FA, particularly EPA and DHA, and their oxygenated derivatives in colostrum and milk, reducing TNFα and IL10 in milk.  相似文献

The role of dietary fat during early pregnancy in sows has not yet been fully established. The aim of the study was to determine the consequences of altering the fatty acid profile of sow diets during the first half of gestation; oils of different fatty acid composition were chosen as energy supplements to provide diets with different fatty acid profiles. A group of 48 multiparous sows were used to evaluate the effects of supplemental feeding during the first 60 days of gestation (term ≈ 115 days). Sows were allocated (eight per treatment) to either 3 kg/day of commercial sow pellets (control; C) or an experimental diet consisting of 3 kg/day of commercial sow pellets supplemented with 10% extra energy in the form of excess pellets (E), palm oil (P), olive oil (O), sunflower oil (S) or fish oil (F). Differential effects were observed with respect to the fatty acid profile of the diet during the first half of gestation. P sows gave birth to the largest litters. Both P and O supplementation of the maternal diet resulted in heavier piglets at birth, after correction for differences in litter size. P piglets possessed the most fat at birth and remained fatter throughout the pre-weaning period; in contrast, the offspring of O sows contained the least fat throughout life (0 to 140 days of age). The offspring of F sows exhibited improved growth performance during the neonatal period. In conclusion, altering the fatty acid profile of sow diets during the first half of gestation has long-term consequences for the growth and development of their offspring.  相似文献

The present study was to investigate the efficiency of maternal selenomethionine intake on growth performance, Se distribution, and antioxidant status of pig offspring by comparing with sodium selenite. A total of 12 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) with same pregnancy were randomly divided into two groups; each group was replicated six times. These two groups received the same basal gestation and lactation diets containing 0.04 mg Se/kg, supplemented with 0.3 mg Se/kg sodium selenite and selenomethionine (i.e., seneno-dl-methylseleno), respectively. The feeding trial lasted for 60 days, with 32 and 28 days for gestation and lactation period, respectively. Compared with sodium selenite, maternal selenomethionine intake significantly (p < 0.05) increased the daily weight gain of piglet from birth to weaning. The Se concentration in the colostrum and milk and tissue Se content of piglets were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the selenomethionine-treated group. The antioxidant status was greatly improved in piglets of selenomethionine-treated group and was illuminated by the increased total antioxidant capability, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione, and decreased the malondialdehyde level in the organs of piglets. The increased (p < 0.05) triiodothyronine (T3) and decreased (p < 0.05) thyroxine (T4) concentration indicated the improved protein synthesis and energy production in the selenomethionine-treated group. The increased (p < 0.05) pancreatic digestive enzymes of protease, amylase, and lipase activities indicated that maternal selenomethionine intake may have a positive effect on the degradation and absorption of nutrients in its piglets. In summary, we concluded that maternal selenomethionine intake increased Se deposition, antioxidant status, and nutrient use efficiency, thus providing an effective way to improve the growth performance of piglets from birth to weaning.  相似文献

Aims

To assess, in a cleaned and disinfected barn environment, the efficacy of an animal disinfection strategy to reduce the livestock‐associated methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA‐MRSA) prevalence in sows, their offspring and the barn environment.

Methods and Results

On each farm, six sow rounds were sampled; sows were divided into either a test or control group. Per round, 20 sows and 40 of their piglets were sampled at different time points together with the barn environment. The disinfection strategy of the test groups consisted of washing the sows with a shampoo followed by disinfection of the skin with a solution containing chlorhexidine digluconate and isopropanol. On the first day of disinfection and 6 days after stopping the disinfection, a significant decrease (P < 0·01) of on average 68 and 66% in sow MRSA prevalence was observed on both farms, whereas no decrease was seen in the control groups. Just before weaning, 21–28 days after the end of the disinfection strategy, the difference in MRSA prevalence between both groups was reduced to 4% and no longer significant (P = 0·20). The MRSA prevalence of the piglets in the test groups was significantly lower (26%; P < 0·01) 6 days after the end of disinfection. Just before weaning, this difference was reduced to 5% but still significant (P < 0·01). In the swine nursery unit, no significant difference (P = 0·99) was seen between both groups. Based on semi‐quantitative counts, a relationship (r2 > 0·6; P < 0·01) was seen between MRSA contamination in the barn environment and the MRSA prevalence in pigs.

Conclusion

Results show that the tested disinfection strategy reduces temporarily the sow and piglet MRSA status, but does not result in a final reduction in MRSA at weaning or in the nursery unit.

Significance and Impact of the Study

First report on the efficacy of an animal disinfection strategy to reduce LA‐MRSA prevalence in sows, their offspring and the barn environment.  相似文献

To investigate a novel route for providing analgesia to processed piglets via transmammary drug delivery, meloxicam was administered orally to sows after farrowing. The objectives of the study were to demonstrate meloxicam transfer from sows to piglets via milk and to describe the analgesic effects in piglets after processing through assessment of pain biomarkers and infrared thermography (IRT). Ten sows received either meloxicam (30 mg/kg) (n = 5) or whey protein (placebo) (n = 5) in their daily feedings, starting four days after farrowing and continuing for three consecutive days. During this period, blood and milk samples were collected at 12-hour intervals. On Day 5 after farrowing, three boars and three gilts from each litter were castrated or sham castrated, tail docked, and administered an iron injection. Piglet blood samples were collected immediately before processing and at predetermined times over an 84-hour period. IRT images were captured at each piglet blood collection point. Plasma was tested to confirm meloxicam concentrations using a validated high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method. Meloxicam was detected in all piglets nursing on medicated sows at each time point, and the mean (± standard error of the mean) meloxicam concentration at castration was 568.9±105.8 ng/mL. Furthermore, ex-vivo prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis inhibition was greater in piglets from treated sows compared to controls (p = 0.0059). There was a time-by-treatment interaction for plasma cortisol (p = 0.0009), with meloxicam-treated piglets demonstrating lower cortisol concentrations than control piglets for 10 hours after castration. No differences in mean plasma substance P concentrations between treatment groups were observed (p = 0.67). Lower cranial skin temperatures on IRT were observed in placebo compared to meloxicam-treated piglets (p = 0.015). This study demonstrates the successful transfer of meloxicam from sows to piglets through milk and corresponding analgesia after processing, as evidenced by a decrease in cortisol and PGE2 levels and maintenance of cranial skin temperature.  相似文献
