The fabrication and performance of a flexible and stretchable microbial fuel cell (MFC) monolithically integrated into a single sheet of textile substrate are reported. The single‐layer textile MFC uses Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1) as a biocatalyst to produce a maximum power of 6.4 µW cm?2 and current density of 52 µA cm?2, which are substantially higher than previous textile‐MFCs and are similar to other flexible paper‐based MFCs. The textile MFC demonstrates a stable performance with repeated stretching and twisting cycles. The membrane‐less single‐chamber configuration drastically simplifies the fabrication and improves the performance of the MFC. A conductive and hydrophilic anode in a 3D fabric microchamber maximizes bacterial electricity generation from a liquid environment and a silver oxide/silver solid‐state cathode reduces cathodic overpotential for fast catalytic reaction. A simple batch fabrication approach simultaneously constructs 35 individual devices, which will revolutionize the mass production of textile MFCs. This stretchable and twistable power device printed directly onto a single textile substrate can establish a standardized platform for textile‐based biobatteries and will be potentially integrated into wearable electronics in the future.  相似文献

Inverted metamorphic Ga0.3In0.7As photovoltaic converters with sub-0.60 eV bandgaps grown on InP and GaAs are presented. Threading dislocation densities are 1.3 ± 0.6 × 106 and 8.9 ± 1.7 × 106 cm−2 on InP and GaAs, respectively. The devices generate open-circuit voltages of 0.386 and 0.383 V, respectively, under irradiance producing a short-circuit current density of ≈10 A cm−2, yielding bandgap-voltage offsets of 0.20 and 0.21 V. Power and broadband reflectance measurements are used  to estimate thermophotovoltaic (TPV) efficiency. The InP-based cell is estimated to yield 1.09 W cm−2 at 1100 °C versus 0.92 W cm−2 for the GaAs-based cell, with efficiencies of 16.8 versus 9.2%. The efficiencies of both devices are limited by sub-bandgap absorption, with power weighted sub-bandgap reflectances of 81% and 58%, respectively, the majority of which is assumed to occur in the graded buffers. The 1100 °C TPV efficiencies are estimated to increase to 24.0% and 20.7% in structures with the graded buffer removed, if previously demonstrated reflectance is achieved. These devices also have application to laser power conversion in the 2.0–2.3 µm atmospheric window. Peak laser power converter efficiencies of 36.8% and 32.5% are estimated under 2.0 µm irradiances of 1.86 and 2.81 W cm−2, respectively.  相似文献

Quasi-solid thermogalvanic hydrogels hold great promise in harvesting low-grade thermal energy, yet, they are still far from practical application owing to relatively low power output. Herein, through liquid nitrogen quenching-induced structure engineering, a high-performance stretchable thermogalvanic hydrogel thread with a high specific output power density of 2227.5 µW m−2 K−2 and a large thermopower of 4.5 mV K−1 is designed. After liquid nitrogen quenching, both the thermopower and electrical conductivity have been greatly improved compared to natural cooling. The excellent properties are attributed to liquid nitrogen quenching-induced grain refinement and precipitation inhibition. It is a novel and general preparation method for high-performance and homogeneous thermogalvanic hydrogels. Finally, a thermogalvanic hydrogel array is demonstrated to be capable of driving a low-power motor and charging a mobile phone by low-grade thermal energy harvesting, indicating a great potential for practical applications in human daily life.  相似文献

The ability to directly modify native and established biofilms has enormous potential in understanding microbial ecology and application of biofilm in 'real-world' systems. However, efficient genetic transformation of established biofilms at any scale remains challenging. In this study, we applied an ultrasound-mediated DNA delivery (UDD) technique to introduce plasmid to established non-competent biofilms in situ. Two different plasmids containing genes coding for superfolder green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) and the flavin synthesis pathway were introduced into established bacterial biofilms in microfluidic flow (transformation efficiency of 3.9 ± 0.3 × 10-7 cells in biofilm) and microbial fuel cells (MFCs), respectively, both employing UDD. Gene expression and functional effects of genetically modified bacterial biofilms were observed, where some cells in UDD-treated Pseudomonas putida UWC1 biofilms expressed sfGFP in flow cells and UDD-treated Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilms generated significantly (P < 0.05) greater (61%) bioelectricity production (21.9 ± 1.2 µA cm−2) in MFC than a wild-type control group (~ 13.6 ± 1.6 µA cm−2). The effects of UDD were amplified in subsequent growth under selection pressure due to antibiotic resistance and metabolism enhancement. UDD-induced gene transfer on biofilms grown in both microbial flow cells and MFC systems was successfully demonstrated, with working volumes of 0.16 cm3 and 300 cm3, respectively, demonstrating a significant scale-up in operating volume. This is the first study to report on a potentially scalable direct genetic engineering method for established non-competent biofilms, which can be exploited in enhancing their capability towards environmental, industrial and medical applications.  相似文献

A key challenge to apply aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) as next-generation energy storage device is to improve the rechargeability at high current densities, which is needed to circumvent slowly ion diffusion in anode and sluggish charge transfer of Zn2+. Herein, a zincophilic accordion array derived from MOF is developed as zinc host for simultaneously boosted ion diffusion and charge transfer. The designed host is prepared by etching and disproportionation reactions, the abundant zincophilic Sn sites with nano-size uniform disperse on accordion arrays nanosheets (Sn-AA). Then a composite Zn anode (Sn-AA@Zn) is obtained by compacting Sn-AA host with zinc power (Zn-P). The Sn-AA@Zn anode has an ultra-low activation energy (37.1 kJ mol−1) and nucleation overpotential (10 mV), achieving fast charge transfer of Zinc deposition. In addition, the cycle life of the symmetric cell with Sn-AA@Zn anode exceeds 13 000 cycles at 50 mA cm−2, which is 32 times than that of the Zn-P anode. And the full cell with Sn-AA@Zn anode and MnO2 cathode maintains a capacity of 122 mAh g−1 after 5000 cycles at 5 Ag−1. Hopefully, the 3D anode based on Sn-AA@Zn accordion array and Zn-P has significantly improved the rechargeability of AZMB at high current density.  相似文献

Protein nanowires are critical electroactive components for electron transfer of Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm. To determine the applicability of the nanowire proteins in improving bioelectricity production, their genes including pilA, omcZ, omcS and omcT were overexpressed in G. sulfurreducens. The voltage outputs of the constructed strains were higher than that of the control strain with the empty vector (0.470–0.578 vs. 0.355 V) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). As a result, the power density of the constructed strains (i.e. 1.39–1.58 W m−2) also increased by 2.62- to 2.97-fold as compared to that of the control strain. Overexpression of nanowire proteins also improved biofilm formation on electrodes with increased protein amount and thickness of biofilms. The normalized power outputs of the constructed strains were 0.18–0.20 W g−1 that increased by 74% to 93% from that of the control strain. Bioelectrochemical analyses further revealed that the biofilms and MFCs with the constructed strains had stronger electroactivity and smaller internal resistance, respectively. Collectively, these results demonstrate for the first time that overexpression of nanowire proteins increases the biomass and electroactivity of anode-attached microbial biofilms. Moreover, this study provides a new way for enhancing the electrical outputs of MFCs.  相似文献

The development of renewable and clean energy has been the priority of the global research field due to the urgent effects of climate change. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is recognized as a sustainable approach to simultaneously generate power and treat wastewater through the employment of microorganisms as catalyst. The use of buffer solution in the wastewater treatment makes the commercial application of MFCs challenging due to their environmental impact and high costs. This work uses rotational motion to generate the flow stress in the anode chamber of the MFCs to enhance biofilm growth and mass transfer that leads to an overall performance improvement of the system. The effects on pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and power density were evaluated under rotational speeds of the magnetic stirrer from 0 to 640 rpm. The influence of the stirrer was then assessed utilizing the same parameters specified for scenarios with and without buffer. The results reveal that at 480 rpm of stirring speed, the pH value was neutral with a maximum COD removal of 82 % for bufferless and 93 % for buffered scenarios. In addition, for bufferless operation at 480 rpm yielded a power density of 402 mWm−2. The results of the flow stress analysis for bufferless and buffered MFCs are beneficial for the commercialization and future development of the system for wastewater treatment applications.  相似文献

Scaling up microbial fuel cells and other bioelectrochemical systems   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Scientific research has advanced on different microbial fuel cell (MFC) technologies in the laboratory at an amazing pace, with power densities having reached over 1 kW/m3 (reactor volume) and to 6.9 W/m2 (anode area) under optimal conditions. The main challenge is to bring these technologies out of the laboratory and engineer practical systems for bioenergy production at larger scales. Recent advances in new types of electrodes, a better understanding of the impact of membranes and separators on performance of these systems, and results from several new pilot-scale tests are all good indicators that commercialization of the technology could be possible within a few years. Some of the newest advances and future challenges are reviewed here with respect to practical applications of these MFCs for renewable energy production and other applications.  相似文献

A rotating disk electrode (RDE) was used to investigate the concentration loss and impedance characteristics of anodic biofilms in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Amperometric time–current analysis revealed that at the rotation rate of 480 rpm, a maximum current density of 168 µA cm?2 can be achieved, which was 22.2 % higher than when there was no rotation. Linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests showed that when the anodic potential was set to ?300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl reference, the power densities could increase by 59.0  %, reaching 1385 mW m?2, the anodic resistance could reduce by 19  %, and the anodic capacitance could increase by 36 %. These results concur with a more than 85 % decrease of the diffusion layer thickness. Data indicated that concentration loss, diffusion layer thickness, and the mixing velocity play important roles in anodic resistance reduction and power output of MFCs. These findings could be helpful to the design of future industrial-scale MFCs with mixed bacteria biofilms.  相似文献

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) hold great promise as an energy conversion and storage technology at lower temperatures (400–650 °C). However, the sluggish reaction kinetics at the oxygen electrode hinder the electrochemical activity of PCECs. Herein, a series of bifunctional oxygen electrodes based on bimetal-doped BaCoO3-𝛿 (BCO) are reported. Doping hampers hexagonal perovskite formation and transforms BCO into cubic perovskite, improving water uptake and hydration abilities. Density functional theory calculations highlight the effects of phase transformation on the proton transport properties of oxygen electrodes. Notably, PCECs incorporating the bimetal-doped electrodes exhibit maximum power densities of 3.15 W cm−2 (650 °C) and 2.25 W cm−2 (600 °C) in fuel cell mode, as well as a current density of 4.21 A cm−2 at 1.3 V (650 °C) in electrolysis cell mode, setting record-high values. The findings provide insights into the rational design of bifunctional oxygen electrodes for high-performance PCECs.  相似文献

β-N-Acetylglucosaminidases (GlcNAcases) are important for many biological functions and industrial applications. In this study, a glycoside hydrolase family 20 GlcNAcase from Shinella sp. JB10 was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Compared to many GlcNAcases, the purified recombinant enzyme (rJB10Nag) exhibited a higher specificity activity (538.8 µmol min−1 mg−1) or V max (1030.0 ± 82.1 µmol min−1 mg−1) toward p-nitrophenyl β-N-acetylglucosaminide and N,N′-diacetylchitobiose (specificity activity of 35.4 µmol min−1 mg−1) and a higher N-acetylglucosaminide tolerance (approximately 50% activity in 70.0 mM N-acetylglucosaminide). The degree of synergy on enzymatic degradation of chitin by a commercial chitinase and rJB10Nag was as high as 2.35. The enzyme was tolerant to most salts, especially 3.0–15.0% (w/v) NaCl and KCl. These biochemical characteristics make the JB10 GlcNAcase a candidate for use in many potential applications, including processing marine materials and the bioconversion of chitin waste. Furthermore, the enzyme has the highest proportions of alanine (16.5%), glycine (10.5%), and random coils (48.8%) with the lowest proportion of α-helices (24.9%) among experimentally characterized GH 20 GlcNAcases from other organisms.

Traditional challenges of poor cycling stability and low Coulombic efficiency in Zinc (Zn) metal anodes have limited their practical application. To overcome these issues, this work introduces a single metal-atom design featuring atomically dispersed single copper (Cu) atoms on 3D nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) co-doped porous carbon (CuNOC) as a highly reversible Zn host. The CuNOC structure provides highly active sites for initial Zn nucleation and further promotes uniform Zn deposition. The 3D porous architecture further mitigates the volume changes during the cycle with homogeneous Zn2+ flux. Consequently, CuNOC demonstrates exceptional reversibility in Zn plating/stripping processes over 1000 cycles at 2 and 5 mA cm−2 with a fixed capacity of 1 mAh cm−2, while achieving stable operation and low voltage hysteresis over 700 h at 5 mA cm−2 and 5 mAh cm−2. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations show that co-doping N and O on porous carbon with atomically dispersed single Cu atoms creates an efficient zincophilic site for stable Zn nucleation. A full cell with the CuNOC host anode and high loading V2O5 cathode exhibits outstanding rate-capability up to 5 A g−1 and a stable cycle life over 400 cycles at 0.5 A g−1.  相似文献

The practical realization of aqueous zinc-ion batteries relies crucially on effective interphases governing Zn electrodeposition chemistry. In this study, an innovative solution by introducing an ultrathin (≈2 µm) biomass membrane as an intimate artificial interface, functioning as nature's ion-regulation skin to protect zinc metal anodes is proposed. Capitalizing on the inherent properties of natural reed membrane, including multiscale ion transport tunnels, abundant ─OH groups, and remarkable mechanical integrity, the reed membrane demonstrates efficacy in regulating uniform and rapid Zn2+ transport, promoting desolvation, and governing Zn (002) plane electrodeposition. Importantly, a unique in situ electrochemical Zn─O bond formation mechanism between the reed membrane and Zn electrode upon cycling is elucidated, resulting in a robustly adhered interface covering on the zinc anode surface, ultimately ensuring remarkable dendrite-free and highly reversible Zn anodes. Consequently, the approach achieves a prolonged cycle life for over 1450 h at 3 mA cm−2/1.5 mAh cm−2 in symmetric Zn//Zn cells. Moreover, exceptional cyclic performance (88.95%, 4000 cycles) is obtained in active carbon-based cells with an active mass loading of 5.8 mg cm−2. The approach offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy for achieving stable and reversible zinc anodes for aqueous batteries.  相似文献

This study illustrates how the microstructure of garnet solid-state electrolytes (SSE) affects the stress-state and dendrite growth. Tantalum-doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZTO, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12) is synthesized by powder processing and sintering (AS), or with the incorporation of intermediate-stage high-energy milling (M). The M compact displays higher density (91.5% vs 82.5% of theoretical), and per quantitative stereology, lower average grain size (5.4 ± 2.6 vs 21.3 ± 11.1 µm) and lower AFM-derived RMS surface roughness contacting the Li metal (45 vs 161 nm). These differences enable symmetric M cells to electrochemically cycle at constant capacity (0.1 mAh cm−2) with enhanced critical current density (CCD) of 1.4 versus 0.3 mA cm−2. It is demonstrated that LLZTO grain size distribution and internal porosity critically affect electrical short-circuit failure, indicating the importance of electronic properties. Lithium dendrites propagate intergranularly through regions where LLZTO grains are smaller than the bulk average (7.4 ± 3.8 µm for AS in a symmetric cell, 3.1 ± 1.4 µm for M in a half-cell). Metal also accumulates in the otherwise empty pores of the sintered compact present along the dendrite path. Mechanistic modeling indicates that reaction and stress heterogeneities are interrelated, leading to current focusing and preferential plating at grain boundaries.  相似文献

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can be built with layered electrode assemblies, where the anode, proton exchange membrane (PEM), and cathode are pressed into a single unit. We studied the performance and microbial community structure of MFCs with layered assemblies, addressing the effect of materials and oxygen crossover on the community structure. Four MFCs with layered assemblies were constructed using Nafion or Ultrex PEMs and a plain carbon cloth electrode or a cathode with an oxygen-resistant polytetrafluoroethylene diffusion layer. The MFC with Nafion PEM and cathode diffusion layer achieved the highest power density, 381 mW/m2 (20 W/m3). The rates of oxygen diffusion from cathode to anode were three times higher in the MFCs with plain cathodes compared to those with diffusion-layer cathodes. Microsensor studies revealed little accumulation of oxygen within the anode cloth. However, the abundance of bacteria known to use oxygen as an electron acceptor, but not known to have exoelectrogenic activity, was greater in MFCs with plain cathodes. The MFCs with diffusion-layer cathodes had high abundance of exoelectrogenic bacteria within the genus Geobacter. This work suggests that cathode materials can significantly influence oxygen crossover and the relative abundance of exoelectrogenic bacteria on the anode, while PEM materials have little influence on anode community structure. Our results show that oxygen crossover can significantly decrease the performance of air-cathode MFCs with layered assemblies, and therefore limiting crossover may be of particular importance for these types of MFCs.  相似文献

The discovery of ductile Ag2(S, Se, Te) materials opens a new avenue toward high-performance flexible/hetero-shaped thermoelectrics. Specifically, the cubic-structured materials are quite attractive by combining remarkable plasticity, decent thermoelectric figure of merit (zT), and no phase transition above room temperature. However, such materials are quite few and the understanding is inadequate on their mechanical and thermoelectric properties. Enlightened by the high-entropy principles, a series of pseudo-ternary Ag2S-Ag2Se-Ag2Te alloys is designed and comprehensive diagrams of composition-structure-plasticity-zT are compiled. Subsequently, the compositional region for the cubic phase is outlined. As a high-entropy example featuring with anion-site alloying and disordered Ag ions, Ag2-xS1/3Se1/3Te1/3 materials exhibit impressively large elongations of 60–97%, ultralow lattice thermal conductivities of ≈0.2 W m−1 K−1, and decent zT values of 0.45 at 300 K, 0.8 at 460 K. The materials can be readily rolled into thin foils, showing excellent flexibility. Finally, a six-leg in-plane device is fabricated, achieving an output voltage of 13.6 mV, a maximal power of 12.8 µW, and a power density of 14.3 W m−2 under the temperature difference of 30 K, much higher than the organic counterparts. This study largely enriches the members of cubic ductile inorganic materials for the applications in flexible and hetero-shaped energy and electronic devices.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of enrichment procedure on the performance and microbial diversity of an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) which was explored for simultaneous azo dye decolorization and electricity generation. Two different enrichment procedures in which glucose and Congo red were added into the MFCs sequentially (EP1) or simultaneously (EP2) were tested by operating parallel MFCs independently for more than 6 months. The power density, electrode potential, Congo red decolorization, biofilm morphology, and bacterial diversity of the MFCs under the two enrichment procedures were compared and investigated. The results showed that the enrichment procedures have a negligible effect on the dye decolorization, but significantly affected the electricity generation. More than 90% decolorization at dye concentration of 300 mg/L was achieved within 170 h for the two tested enrichment procedures. However, the MFC with EP2 achieved a maximum power density of 192 mW/m2, which was 75% higher than that of the MFC with EP1 (110 mW/m2). The depressed surfaces of the bacteria in the MFC with EP1 indicated the allergic response caused by the subsequent addition of Congo red. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis demonstrated a phylogenetic diversity in the communities of the anode biofilm and showed clear differences between the anode-attached populations in the MFCs with a different enrichment procedure. This study suggests that the enrichment procedure is important for the MFC explored for simultaneous dye decolorization and electricity generation.  相似文献

Nonaqueous metal–gas batteries based on halogenated reactants exhibit strong potential for future high‐energy electrochemical systems. The lithium–sulfur hexafluoride (Li–SF6) primary battery, which utilizes a safe, noncombustible, energy‐dense gas as cathode, demonstrates attractive eight‐electron transfer reduction during discharge and high attainable capacities (>3000 mAh g?1carbon) at voltages above 2.2 VLi. However, improved rate capability is needed for practical applications. Here, two viable strategies are reported to achieve this by targeting the solubility of the passivating discharge product, lithium fluoride (LiF). Operating at moderately elevated temperatures, e.g., 50 °C, in DMSO dramatically improves LiF solubility and promotes sparser and larger LiF nuclei on gas diffusion layer electrodes, leading to capacity improvements of ≈10× at 120 µA cm?2. More aggressive chemical modification of the electrolyte by including a tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane anion receptor further promotes LiF solubilization; capacity increases even at room temperature by a factor of 25 at 120 µA cm?2, with attainable capacities up to 3 mAh cm?2. This work shows that bulk fluoride‐forming conversion reactions can be strongly manipulated by tuning the electrolyte environment to be solvating toward F?, and that significantly improved rates can be achieved, leading a step closer to practical applications.  相似文献

The rapid development of smart wearable and integrated electronic products has urgently increased the requirement for high‐performance microbatteries. Although few lithium ion microbatteries based on organic electrolytes have been reported so far, the problems, such as undesirable energy density, poor flexibility, inflammability, volatility toxicity, and high cost restrict their practical applications in the above‐mentioned electronic products. In order to overcome these problems, a low cost quasi‐solid‐state aqueous zinc ion microbattery (ZIMB) assembled by a vanadium dioxide (B)‐multiwalled carbon nanotubes (VO2 (B)‐MWCNTs) cathode, a zinc nanoflakes anode, and a zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate‐polyvinyl alcohol (Zn(CF3SO3)2‐PVA) hydrogel electrolyte is exploited. As expected, the ZIMB exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, e.g., a high capacity of 314.7 µAh cm?2, an ultrahigh energy density of 188.8 µWh cm?2, and a high power density of 0.61 mW cm?2. Furthermore, the ZIMB also shows high flexibility and excellent high temperature stability: the capacity has no obvious decay when the bending angle is up to 150° and the temperature reaches 100 °C. The ZIMB provides a way to develop next‐generation miniature energy storage devices with high performance.  相似文献

Crucial advancements in versatile catalyst systems capable of achieving high current densities under industrial conditions, bridging the gap between fundamental understanding and practical applications, are pivotal to propel the hydrogen economy forward. In this study, vertically oriented hierarchically multiscale nanoflakes of NiFeCo electrocatalysts are presented, developed by surface modification of a porous substrate with nano-structured nickel. The resulting electrodes achieve remarkably low overpotentials of 139 mV at 10 mAcm−2 and 248 mV at 500 mAcm−2. Further, scaled-up electrodes are implemented in a water-splitting electrolyser device exhibiting a stable voltage of 1.82 V to deliver a constant current density of 500 mA cm−2 for over 17 days. Moreover, the role of the unique structures on electrochemical activity is systematically investigated by fractal analysis, involving computation of structure factors such as Minkowski connectivity, fractal dimension, and porosity using scanning electron microscope images. It is found that such structures offer higher surface area than typical layered double hydroxide structures due to morphological coherence that results in a superhydrophilic surface, while the base Ni layer boosts the charge transfer. This study demonstrates a Ni/NiFeCo(OH)x heterostructure with highly porous morphology, a key to unlocking extremely efficient oxygen evolution reaction activity with exceptional stability. Moreover, fractal analysis is presented as a valuable tool to evaluate the electrochemical performance of catalysts for their structured morphology.  相似文献
