In this study, we investigated the effect of photoperiod on growth and gonadal development of juvenile topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva. Seven different photoperiods (light:dark, L:D) were tested: 0L:24D, 4L:20D, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, 20L:4D and 24L:0D, from November to January. Throughout the study, light intensity was kept at 400 lx on the water surface, and the fish were fed a commercial diet twice a day. Weight gain, feed intake, specific growth rate, and feed conversion efficiency were significantly higher under the constant–long day photoperiods (24L:0D, 20L:4D and 16L:8D) than those under the short–no day photoperiods (12L:12D, 8L:16D, 4L:20D, 0L:24D) (p?<?0.05). The highest mean female gonadosomatic index (GSI) and mean oocyte size were observed under 24L:0D followed by 20L:4D and 16L:8D photoperiods, and these parameters were significantly higher than those of fish cultured under the short–no day photoperiod regimes (p?<?0.05). Proportion of females with GSI?>?9 % were 50.00 %, 46.67 %, 48.48 %, in 24L:0D, 20L:4D and 16L:8D, respectively. These results demonstrate that the growth of juvenile P. parva can be stimulated significantly by constant–long photoperiods and that these photoperiods can advance sexual maturity of females by approximately 2 months.  相似文献

Effects of constant temperature on mating duration and total fecundity of Neoseiulus californicus females mated once were investigated at 18 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C with a photoperiod of 16L:8D. Adult mites grown and maintained at 25 °C mated for 315.3 min on average and produced 46.1 eggs per female. These values varied significantly by temperature: 553.6 and 13.9 (18 °C), 261.2 and 26.6 (30 °C), and 253.6 and 23.9 (35 °C), respectively. Duration of copulation was negatively correlated with temperature. However, total egg production peaked at 25 °C and decreased at lower and higher temperatures. Reduced sperm transfer and/or survival rate of sperm in the female body may account for decreased egg production when temperatures are not optimal.  相似文献

The predatory bugPodisus maculiventris Say displays a reproductive diapause. In the laboratory, at 23±1°C, when the pre-imaginal stages were reared on larvae ofGalleria melonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under a short photoperiod of 8L: 16D, diapause was induced in all adult females, whereas under a long photoperiod of 16L: 8D none entered diapause. Nymphal development was faster under the diapause-inducing short photoperiod than under the diapause-averting long photo-period. By contrast, embryonic development was faster under the long than under the short photoperiod. Diapause maintenance was also under the control of photoperiod. After a 10-d-period of chilling at 4°C, diapause was quickly terminated in adults kept under long photoperiod whereas it was maintained in most of those kept under short photoperiod. The predation rate of non-diapause or post-diapause adult females was much higher than that of diapause females.  相似文献

In this article, the ontogeny and reproductive biology of Diadegma semiclausum (Hym.: Ichneumonidae), an important parasitoid of Plutella xylostella (Lep.: Plutellidae) are described in detail. We did dissect parasitized P. xylostella larvae in phosphate-buffered saline and determine the external morphology of its parasitoid at all developmental stages. The developmental duration of its immature stages, adult longevity, total oviposition period and fecundity of the parasitoid are determined at 24 ± 1 °C, 65  ±  5% R.H., and a photoperiod of 16:8 h L:D. The mean duration of egg and larval stages is 9.56 days and the prepupa and pupa stages last for 8.27 days. In average, female longevity is 1.31 times longer than that of males, and females lay 300 eggs in total. The peak of D. semiclausum oviposition is on the eighth day after mating. The egg loading pattern of D. semiclausum was investigated to determine the parasitoid ‘ovigeny index’ throughout the female's parasitoid lifetime. Initial egg load in immature females (<2 h age) is 1.45 per female and the mean lifetime potential fecundity (total immature and mature oocytes), at four interval ages, is 34. With an ovigeny index value of 0.038, D. semiclausum is considered moderately to strongly synovigenic. In the absence of the host, after 3 days, the number of eggs is decreased in D. semiclausum. Our results demonstrated that there is a negative relation between the ovigeny index and egg resorption in this parasitoid.  相似文献

The effect of temperature and photoperiod on the rate of predation of nymphs and adults of the predator Macrolophus pygmaeus was studied using Myzus persicae prey feeding on egg-plant and pepper plants. The experiments were conducted at three photoperiods (16L:8D, 12L:12D and 8L:16D), three temperatures (20, 25 and 30 °C), and at 65% r.h. The rate of predation increased with temperature. Predation rate was affected by photoperiod on pepper but not on egg-plant. Females and fifth instar nymphs were the most voracious stages followed by third and fourth instar nymphs and males. First and second instar nymphs consumed far fewer aphids. Predation rate was higher on leaves of pepper than egg-plant, especially at 30 °C. Variation in the efficacy of this predator is discussed.  相似文献

Photoperiodic information is transferred from female Siberian hamsters to their fetuses during gestation. Although maternal melatonin is known to be essential for the transfer of prenatal photoperiodic information, its specific role is not well defined. The duration of the daily melatonin signal, expressed as an elevation of serum melatonin levels in the maternal circulation, has been hypothesized to convey day length information to the fetus. If this hypothesis is valid, it predicts that identical maternal melatonin signals should affect the fetuses identically, regardless of the prenatal photoperiod. To test this hypothesis, adult females received melatonin in beeswax or beeswax alone. They were paired with males and housed in photoperiods of 12L:12D or 16L:8D. On the day of parturition, mother and young were transferred to constant light (LL). Young males were killed on Day 28 of life, and weights of testes were determined. Prenatal treatment with beeswax alone did not affect the nature of the signal transferred from mother to fetus; young gestated in 12L:12D and reared in LL developed small testes, while those gestated in 16L:8D had large testes. On the other hand, the effect of the prenatal melatonin treatment on postnatal testicular development in LL was inversely dependent on the prenatal photoperiod: testicular growth was stimulated in young gestated in 12L:12D, but inhibited in young gestated in 16L:8D. To verify that the melatonin pellets produced equivalent serum melatonin levels in adult females in 12L:12D and 16L:8D, unmated adult females were killed 6-10 wk after receiving melatonin pellets. Serum levels were elevated in both groups throughout the day and night.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

To examine the interactions between age and photoperiod on reproduction and spleen weights, we exposed adult male and female rice rats of various ages to photoperiods of 16:8-h light-dark photoperiods (16L:8D) or 12L:12D. After 10 wk, animals were killed and the following data were recorded: weights of testes, seminal vesicles, uterus, ovaries, body, and spleen and, in addition, vaginal patency. Young adult males displayed a greater degree of testicular and seminal vesicle regression in short photoperiods than did older males; the testes of most older males did not regress in response to short photoperiods. Spleen weight was unresponsive to short photoperiods in all males, but was affected by age. Females, however, exhibited reproductive organ regression and decreased vaginal patency in response to short photoperiods at all ages examined. Body weights were affected by photoperiod in young females, and, as in males, photoperiod had no effect on spleen weights. These data suggest that the reproductive response to photoperiod in adult male rice rats declines with age, whereas in adult females it does not.  相似文献

Ninety adult males divided in six equal groups were exposed to different photoperiods for 21 days. Exposures included natural light (ca 11 hr), long photoperiod (16L:8D) and short photoperiod (8L:16D). The first three groups received these exposures at room temperature (13-20 degrees C) while the remaining three at raised temperature (36-38 degrees C). Soiled bedding of the above males was introduced in the cages of unisexually housed noncyclic females and their potentiality to induce oestrus was assessed. It was noticed that the bedding of all the males proved to be a stimulus inducing oestrus in the majority of the females during the 7 day exposure. There was no significant difference in the number of females returning to oestrus following exposure to soiled bedding of different males. These results elucidate that environmental factors, especially light and temperature do not influence the production/release of the oestrus-inducing pheromone in wild mice.  相似文献

Golden mahseer, Tor putitora Hamilton, one of the largest freshwater fish of the Indian sub-continent, inhabits mainly Himalayan rivers in the foothills. Among numerous freshwater fishes of the sub-continent, Golden mahseer is the most striking due to its large size, attractive golden colour, sustenance and sporting values. Tor putitora is known by various common names such as king mahseer, mighty mahseer and the tiger of water. Being a migratory fish, Golden mahseer undertakes periodic upstream migration during pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons from large rivers and higher order streams in the foothills to lower order streams for spawning. In recent years, conservationists, anglers and commercial fishermen have expressed concern over the declining populations of Golden mahseer due to indiscriminate fishing of brooders and juveniles besides the adverse effects of dams. Despite its ecological and economic importance, specific conservation measures by way of protective legal provisos are lacking for Golden mahseer in India. In view of its physical features, ecology and vulnerable conservation status, there is an exigent need to promote the Golden mahseer as a flagship conservation species of the Himalayan rivers. In view of the recent reports of unprecedented river regulation projects on the Himalayan rivers and need to draw global attention of conservationists, we review various aspects of ecology, life history, interesting features, traits and threats associated with the reduced chances of survival of Golden mahseer.  相似文献

Daylengths during the spring are repeated in reverse order in the autumn. For some photoperiodic species, a given photoperiod may be stimulatory for reproduction in the spring and inhibitory in the autumn. The mechanisms regulating this type of seasonal response have, until recently, remained a mystery. Horton (1984a) showed in Microtus montanus that the photoperiod experienced by the mother influences the gonadal development of her young after weaning. To determine if this phenomenon is characteristic of other photoperiodic rodents, adult Djungarian hamsters were paired on 16L:8D, 14L:10D, or 12L:12D. Young males born from these pairings were killed at 15, 28, and 34 days of age to assess gonadal development (testes weight). At 15 days testicular development was identical in all groups; by 28 days, however, males raised in 16L:8D or 14L:10D exhibited a greater degree of testicular development than those raised in 12L:12D. Next, females maintained on each of the three photoperiods throughout gestation were transferred, with their offspring, to the other two photoperiods at birth. Postnatal exposure to 14L:10D or 12L:12D inhibited testicular development in young that had been gestated on 16L:8D. Both 16L:8D and 14L:10D stimulated testicular growth in animals that had been gestated on 12L:12D or 14L:10D. Therefore, a) 16L:8D stimulates testicular growth in all animals, b) 12L:12D inhibits testicular growth in all animals, and c) the testicular response to 14L:10D depends on the photoperiod experienced by the mother during pregnancy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We examined the effects of temperature and photoperiod on metabolic thermogenesis and the thermogenic characteristics of brown adipose tissue in plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) and root voles (Microtus oeconomus), the dominant species of small mammals in the alpine meadow ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Pikas and voles were acclimated in the following groups: (1) Long day – warm temperature (16L:8D, 23 °C), (2) Long day – cold temperature (16L:8D, 5 °C), (3) short day – warm temperature (8L:16D, 23 °C), and (4) short day – cold temperature (8L:16D, 5 °C). Both temperature and photoperiod were important environmental cues for changes in thermogenesis for both species. Low temperature and short photoperiod induced increases in metabolic rate, nonshivering thermogenesis (NST), mitochondrial protein contents of brown adipose tissue, and cytochrome C oxidase activity of brown adipose tissue mitochondria in both species. Plateau pikas were more sensitive to cold (79% of the total NST response) than to short photoperiod (21%), while root voles were more sensitive to short photoperiod (60% of the total NST response) than to cold (40%), although cold clearly enhanced thermogenesis. Their thermogenic characteristics correlated with their preferred habitats: plateau pikas are found mainly in more exposed microhabitats in open sunny meadow, while root voles live in more sheltered microhabitats in relatively closed shrub. Our results also showed that temperature and photoperiod combined induce thermogenic adjustments in both species in seasonal acclimatization in their alpine meadow macrohabitat. Daphnia magna is a cladoceran used as a model organism in aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology studies. Because growth is a critical parameter to study the effect of environmental conditions on the development of zooplankters, the somatic growth of D. magna was measured here and described by the von Bertalanffy growth equation (VBGE), a mathematical model widely used in fisheries management. For this purpose, the effect of two temperatures (20 and 25°C) and two photoperiod conditions (12:12 and 16:8, light:dark) was assayed. Experiments began with neonate females and were finished when parthenogenetic females reached the age of 41 days; they were fed the microalga Ankistrodesmus falcatus (400,000 cell ml−1, 12 mg l−1, dry weight). According to the VBGE, maximal length (L max) was inversely correlated with the growth rate (K). The highest L max (6.45 mm) was for the females grown at 20°C with the 12:12 photoperiod, whereas the maximum growth rate (K = 0.182 ± 0.010) was for individuals grown at 25°C with the 12:12 photoperiod. The number of clutches during the studied period was significantly higher for females grown at 25°C, 12:12. Temperature affected the growth rate and the maximum size in D. magna; interaction of temperature with photoperiod was also noteworthy. The VBGE was a nifty way to assess the effects of the tested environmental factors.  相似文献

A series of experiments was conducted to investigate whether temperatures of 18 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C and a photoperiod of 16L:8D at immature and adult stages would differentially affect the mating duration and egg production of Neoseiulus californicus females mated once. Mating duration was strictly determined by ambient temperature at the time of mating, regardless of the temperatures under which they were raised. Compared with a consistent 25 °C condition, total fecundity of females decreased when temperature conditions of 18 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C were applied during any life stage (immature, mating, and oviposition periods) or a combination of different stages. In general, however, if mites were raised in conditions of ≤ 25 °C, and mated and oviposited at conditions of ≥ 25 °C, total egg production was relatively high. Based on these results, the adaptation of mites to thermal environments was discussed.  相似文献

The adult photoperiodic responses of two Trichogramma species were investigated by exposing adults during 3 days to one of the seven light: dark regimes: L: D = 4: 20, 8: 16, 12: 12, 14: 10, 16: 8, 18: 6, and 20: 4. The preimaginal stages of these individuals developed under short (L: D = 12: 12), long (L: D = 20: 4) or intermediate photoperiods (L: D = 14: 10 and L: D = 16: 8 for Trichogramma principium and T. embryophagum, respectively). The progeny of these females developed under short day L: D = 12: 12 and at two moderately diapause-inducing temperatures (13 and 14°C for T. principium, 14 and 15°C for T. embryophagum). In both Trichogramma species which developed at both temperatures, the percentage of diapausing prepupae was significantly dependent both on the photoperiodic conditions of the preimaginal development of the maternal generation and on the photoperiod which influenced the adult females. The adults showed a typical long-day photoperiodic response with a threshold day length of ca 13 h in T. principium and ca 16 h in T. embryophagum, which practically coincided with the thresholds of the pupal photoperiodic responses of these species revealed in our previous studies. However, the ultra-short photoperiods (L: D = 4: 20 and 8:16) caused a relatively stronger diapause-inducing effect on the progeny when applied to the adult females than when it was applied to the pupae. Thus, in both the Trichogramma species studied, the patterns of photoperiodic responses of pupa and adult were somewhat different although they almost coincided in the “ecologically significant” part of the photoperiodic scale.  相似文献

The current study aimed to discuss the impact of total sulfur amino acids (TSAA) %, photoperiod, and their interaction on growth performance, carcass and blood indices of broiler chicks. A total of 300 unsexed IR broiler chicks one-week old were used in a factorial arrangement (2 × 3), including two photoperiod systems (22 L: 2 D and 16 L: 8 D) and three experimental rations having three grades of Met + Cyst (TSAA) (70%, 85% and 100% of digestible lysine in starter and finisher diets). Results revealed that the higher LBW and BWG were noticed in birds given TSAA at grades of 1.1 or 0.90 % under 22L: 2D photoperiod at five weeks of age and the whole experimental period (1–5 weeks of age), respectively. The highest live body weight (LBW (and body weight gain (BWG) were recorded in birds received 1.1% TSAA under the long photoperiod compared to the control and the other groups. Birds fed 1.3% TSAA consumed more feed than the other groups. The opposite was found in birds fed 1.1% TSAA under the short photoperiod (16L: 8D). The best feed conversion (FCR) was detected by birds fed 1.1% and 0.90% TSAA diets during the whole experimental period. All carcass traits studied were significantly influenced by TSAA levels, except for the relative weights of abdominal fat and spleen. The interaction effect on was significant on all carcass traits except spleen %. In conclusion, the addition of TSAA at level 1.1 and 0.9 % to starter and finisher diets under a long photoperiod regime improved broiler’s performance, carcass traits, and blood parameters studied.  相似文献

In the laboratory, blood feeding rates, oögenesis and fat body development were utilized to assess the effects of photoperiod and temperature in the conditioning of adult female Culiseta inornata for aestivation. Long-day (16L:8D) and short-day (8L:16D) photoperiods were examined in combination with temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, and 25°C. All tested individuals were reared from egg to adult under one of six possible regimes.Blood feeding occurred in approximately 60% of the females subjected to short-day conditions. Females subjected to long-day regimes exhibited gonotrophic concordance (the inhibition of blood feeding), evidenced by a decrease in overall blood-feeding rate to 20%. Inhibition of blood feeding by long-day females decreased in a linear fashion with increasing temperature. No interaction of the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon blood feeding was apparent. Examination of the ovarioles of post-blood feeding females, reared under each of the above conditions, revealed no evidence of gonotrophic dissociation (the inhibition of oögenesis despite continued blood feeding).Fat body hypertrophy occurred in females reared under long-day conditions, whereas hypotrophy of this tissue was apparent in short-day females. No significant difference in fat body development occurred between parous and nulliparous females reared under long-day photoperiod conditions. Short-day blood-fed females reared at 15°C deposited a significantly greater amount of fat than short-day blood fed females reared at 20° and 25°C, and short-day nonbloodfed females reared at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. The primary stimulus for fat body hypertrophy appears to be long-day photoperiod conditions. Temperature exerted little discernible effect upon this process, and there was no interaction between the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon the degree of fat body development.  相似文献

Photoperiodic induction of reproductive diapause at 18°C was investigated in fourOrius [Heteroptera: Anthocoridae] species.Orius insidiosus (Say) displayed a long-day response with a critical photoperiod between L11:D13 and L12:D12. Diapause in this species was terminated rapidly when the temperature and/or the daylength were increased.Orius majusculus (Reuter) also displayed a long-day response. The critical photoperiod fell between L14:D10 and L16:D8. Diapause in this species was not terminated within 14 days when both temperature and daylength were increased. InOrius albidipennis (Reuter) no diapause could be induced at photoperiods varying from L8:D16 to L16:D8. InOrius tristicolor (White) a high proportion of diapause was found at all photoperiods tested. The effect of temperature on photoperiodic induction of diapause was studied inO. insidiosus at L10:D14. Diapause occurred at 18°C, 21°C and 25°C, but not at 30°C. Again, diapause was terminated rapidly after transfer to 25°C/L16:D8. Exposing only the nymphal instars 1–5 to short daylength was not enough to induce diapause in the whole population ofO. majusculus. Orius predatory bugs are used as biocontrol agents against western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) [Thysanoptera: Thripidael, in greenhouses. The consequences of photoperiodic induction of diapause for the success of early season releases ofOrius are discussed.  相似文献

Adult male marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) were collected at the end of the spermatogenesis period and exposed to different photoperiods (natural-daylength-simulated photoperiod, total darkness, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, and continuous light) for 3 mo. Temperature was maintained at 20 degrees C. Two additional groups of newts were blinded and exposed to either the natural-simulated photoperiod and to 16 h of light per day respectively. Quantitative histologic studies on testicular development and germ cell volume per testis were performed. The newts captured in the field at the beginning (initial controls) or at the end of the experiments (final controls) were in the period of testicular quiescence. Newts kept in total darkness or exposed to a short photoperiod (8L:16D) showed germ cell development up to primary spermatocytes, whereas germ cell development in the newts exposed to long photoperiods (12L:12D or 16L:8D) progressed to elongated spermatids. The newts exposed either to intermediate photoperiods (natural-simulated photoperiod) or to constant light showed an intermediate degree of germ cell development (up to round spermatids). No significant differences between non-blinded and blinded animals were found. These results suggest that (1) mild temperature initiates testicular development in the period of testicular quiescence, (2) long photoperiods associated with mild temperatures produce spermatogenesis in this period, (3) complete darkness or constant light are less effective than some intermediate photoperiod, and (4) the effect of photoperiod on testicular function in newts is not related to ocular photoreception.  相似文献

Chrysoperla genanigra Freitas is a common green lacewing associated with melon pests in the Northeastern Brazil. All life stages of this recently described species were studied under a range of constant temperature conditions (17, 21, 25, 29, 33, 35 and 37 °C), a photoperiod of 12 h:12 h (L:D) and 70 ± 10% relative humidity. Adults of C. genanigra were fed on a diet consisting of a 1:1 (v/v) mixture of brewer’s yeast and honey, while larvae were provided with eggs of Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) ad libitum. The duration of preimaginal development of the species was inversely proportional to temperature and ranged from approximately 63 days at 17 °C to 15 days at 35 °C. The percentage of adult emergence varied from 6.7% at 17 °C to 76.7% at 25 °C, although no larvae were able to complete development at 37 °C. The lower thermal threshold for total preimaginal development was approximately 10.8 °C and the thermal requirement was 336.7 degree-days. Egg production, along with the longevity of both males and females, were significantly affected by temperature. It is concluded that the best temperature for rearing C. genanigra is 25 °C, with the lowest preimaginal mortality and the highest egg production (992.7 eggs/female).  相似文献

Serum levels of gonadal steroid were assayed at approximately 3-month intervals in groups of 5 to 8 male or female woodchucks which were exposed to a natural photoperiod for 1 year as yearlings or 3 years as adults (Study 1), or a constant photoperiod of 12L:12D from birth for 4.5 years (Study 2). After 4.5 years of 12L:12D, food intake was measured in November and compared with that in natural photoperiod animals (Study 3). Other groups of 11 males and 3 females were housed in 12L:12D for 2.5 years after capture at 2 months of age, and gonadal structure and serum steroid levels in November were compared with those of animals at selected times in the normal annual cycle (Study 4). All animals were provided food and water ad libitum and were not induced to hibernate. In Study 1, normal circannual breeding season elevations in testosterone in males and in progesterone in females were detected in most animals maintained in natural photoperiod. In Study 2, similar cycles persisted for 4.5 years in animals exposed to 12L:12D. However, based on quarterly blood samples, obvious asynchrony relative to natural light animals appeared to develop after 2, 3, or 4 years, with apparent free-running intervals of about 10 to 11 months. In Study 3, mean daily food consumption in late autumn for woodchucks in the 12L:12D group was 72% greater than animals in the natural photoperiod. In Study 4, some woodchucks exposed to 12L:12D for only 2.5 years had prematurely increased spermatogenic activity, Leydig tissue development, and elevated serum testosterone levels in November. They were similar in November to those in natural photoperiod animals in March, and significantly greater than those in natural photoperiod animals in November when normal regression and repair of the testis was complete. Likewise, females in the 12L:12D group had luteinized follicles and elevated progesterone in November which were not noted in natural photoperiod animals and which were similar to those observed during the spring in unbred females under normal conditions. The results suggest that circannual cycles of metabolic and reproductive activity in woodchucks persist in the absence of normal changes in photoperiod, are entrained to seasonal changes in the natural photoperiod, and can recede to a periodicity of less than 12 months within 2.5 to 4 years of laboratory maintenance in 12L:12D.  相似文献
