The subjects were parents, siblings, and children of schizophrenic patients. Auditory evoked potentials (EPs) (P300) were recorded in the standard oddball paradigm with a probability of the target stimuli presentation of 0.2 and sound (tone) intensity of 60 dB. A comparison of these data with the results of the examination of reference groups (normal subjects free of a family history of mental pathology) showed significantly longer latent periods of N1, N2, and P3 in EPs to target stimuli in siblings and children of schizophrenic patients, as well as significantly decreased amplitudes of N1 and P2 in EPs to nontarget (standard) stimuli and longer latent periods of N2 in EPs to target stimuli in the parents of schizophrenic patients.  相似文献

On Wistar rats with experimental hyperthyroidism (HTh) and a control group of the rats, we measured the parameters of the components of the spinal dorsal surface potentials (DSP) evoked by stimulation of the corresponding lumbar dorsal roots; the afferent spike (AS), N 1-N 3 components, and P wave were examined. After development of HTh, the amplitudes of all DSP components dramatically increased (by a factor from 1.8 to 3.1) with a simultaneous noticeable increase in the thresholds of the AS and N 1-N 3 DSP components and a drop in their chronaxia. Under the above conditions, there were no significant changes in the intensity of occlusion and characteristics of the heterosynaptic intersegmental interaction, while the intensity of presynaptic inhibition of the N 1 DSP component decreased. Possible mechanisms of the observed modifications of the DSP parameters are discussed.  相似文献

The findings seemed to be based on direction and velocity of modelling the radial sound source shifting in free acoustic field. The threshold and the optimal parameters of the acoustic model imitating the approaching and withdrawing of the sound source shifting in silence and under conditions of noise, were established. A correlation between peak-to-peak amplitudes of the N1-P2 components of auditory EPs and the imitated direction of the sound shifting, was shown. The role of different left and right hemispheres' areas in perception of the radial sound source was analysed. The detector features of the central auditory neurones were shown as a possible mechanism of estimating the sound source approaching and withdrawal.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to trace the cumulative changes in the amplitude-time parameters of the AEP (acoustic evoked potential) components N1, N2, and P300 in the experimental situations of different complexities (counting and listening to sounds) and to compare the differences between young and mature subjects. The AEP was recorded in 12 healthy subjects aged 18 to 22 years and in 12 subjects aged 32 to 59 years. It was revealed that the components N1, N2, and P300 recorded in the situation of listening without any preliminary instruction did not differ in young and mature individuals. In the younger subjects, a higher N1 amplitude was revealed when they counted sounds, compared to listening, whereas the latency values of this component did not differ, irrespective of the complexity of the task. The component N2 was shown to demonstrate latency stability in relation to the age and the experimental situation. The N2 amplitude was higher in the situation of counting sounds in both age groups. The amplitude-time parameters of P300 did not differ in subjects of different ages in the listening task. The features of the components N1, N2, and P300 revealed in young and mature subjects in the experimental situations differing in complexity lead us to suggest that, with age, humans develop adaptive mechanisms contributing to successful task performance.  相似文献

Localization of a sound source is important for animals in mating contexts: females generally orient towards signalling males, and males can estimate the position and quality of potential rivals. In anurans, the effect of sound direction on evoked vocal responses has been studied in males of Rana catesbeiana, which alter their vocal responses depending on the location of the stimulus. The current study explored the effects of sound direction in Eupsophus calcaratus, a frog that calls from inside burrows having resonance that would hinder the localization of incoming sounds. The vocal responses of 11 males to synthetic imitations of the conspecific advertisement call broadcast from loudspeakers positioned in front, to the right and left from the burrow openings were similar in terms of call rate, duration and latency. The invariance of the vocal responses indicates that for burrowing male frogs engaged in chorusing behaviour, the specific location of an opponent does not alter the persistence of vocal activity.  相似文献

Summary Cochlear microphonic (CM) and evoked neural potentials (N1) were recorded from the cochlear aqueduct of awakePteronotus parnellii. The CM audiograms obtained with continuous sounds had more or less uniform thresholds except for a sharp threshold notch at about 60 kHz (Fig. 1). When brief tone bursts were presented, the envelopes of the CM responses were always similar to the envelopes of the applied signals except when tone bursts having frequencies at or close to the frequency of the tuned sensitivity notch were presented (i.e., 59–63 kHz). The CM rise-decay times for frequencies around 60kHz were much longer than those of the presented signals (Fig. 2). The prolonged decay times are thought to be due to the ringing of the basilar membrane resulting from a mechanical resonance in the cochlea.The evoked neural potential audiograms (N1-on and N1-off responses) differed considerably from the CM audiogram. Of particular importance is the N1-off audiogram which exhibited very sharp tuning in four frequency regions: 31–33 kHz, 60–63 kHz, 71–73 kHz, and 91–92 kHz (Fig. 5). The frequencies evoking the lowest thresholds of the CM and N1-off (in the 60 kHz region) were either identical or differed by only 100–400 Hz.The sharp tuning in the 60 kHz region of both the CM and N1 audiograms could be eliminated by presenting 90–100 dB continuous sounds for one min but only if the signal frequency was equal to the tuned frequency of the CM audiogram (Figs. 8–13). Presenting intense sounds having frequencies above or below the tuned 60kHz region had no effect on the audiogram. The overstimulation procedure had remarkably specific effects on the CM and N1-off audiograms causing the greatest threshold increases at the 60 kHz tuned frequency and progressively smaller threshold changes on the slopes of the tuned notch.Assuming that the sharp changes of the N1-off thresholds reflect some important underlying mechanism, the N1-off audiograms demonstrate multiple specializations in the peripheral auditory system ofPteronotus with the bat possessing at least three and possibly four sharply tuned regions. With regard to mechanism, the tuned notch in the CM audiogram, the curious CM rise-decay times evoked by tone bursts, and the ease with which the 60 kHz sensitivity notch can be eliminated all argue strongly in favor of a mechanical resonance in the cochlea which is responsible for the sharp tuning around 60 kHz. On the other hand, the absence of tuned notches in the 30 kHz and 90 kHz regions of the CM audiogram together with the absence of any discernable ringing of the CM potentials evoked by 30 kHz and 90 kHz tone bursts both argue against a resonance mechanism for the tuning at these harmonically related frequency regions. Finally, the fact that overstimulating the 60 kHz region had no discernable effect on the N1-off tuning at 30 kHz and 90 kHz demonstrates that the mechanism responsible for the tuned regions at 30 kHz and 90 kHz are independent of the resonance feature of the cochlea at 60 kHz.Abbreviations BF best frequency - CF constant frequency - CM cochlear microphonics - CM-aft after-response of the CM - FM frequency modulated - N 1 evoked neural potentials We thank Professor Alvin Novick for the generous support provided during the conduct of these experiments. Our study was aimed at investigating whether complement, a complex of soluble and membrane‐associated serum proteins, could, in addition to its well‐documented post‐synaptic activity, also pre‐synaptically affect the release of classic neurotransmitters in central nervous system (CNS). Complement (dilution 1 : 10 to 1 : 10000) elicited the release of preloaded [3H]‐d ‐aspartate ([3H]d ‐ASP) and endogenous glutamate from mouse cortical synaptosomes in a dilution‐dependent manner. It also evoked [3H]d ‐ASP release from mouse hippocampal, cerebellar, and spinal cord synaptosomes, as well as from rat and human cortical nerve endings, but left unaltered the release of GABA, [3H]noradrenaline or [3H]acetylcholine. Lowering external Na+ (from 140 to 40 mM) or Ca2+ (from 1.2 to 0.1 mM) ions prevented the 1 : 300 complement‐evoked [3H]d ‐ASP release from mouse cortical synaptosomes. Complement‐induced releasing effect was unaltered in synaptosomes entrapped with the Ca2+ ions chelator 1,2‐bis‐(2‐aminophenoxy) ethane‐N,N,N’,N’, tetra‐acetic acid or with pertussis toxin. Nifedipine,/ω‐conotoxin GVIA/ω‐conotoxin MVIIC mixture as well as the vesicular ATPase blocker bafilomycin A1 were also inefficacious. The excitatory amino acid transporter blocker DL‐threo‐ß‐benzyloxyaspartic acid, on the contrary, reduced the complement‐evoked releasing effect in a concentration‐dependent manner. We concluded that complement‐induced releasing activity is restricted to glutamatergic nerve endings, where it was accounted for by carrier‐mediated release. Our observations afford new insights into the molecular events accounting for immune and CNS crosstalk.

ABSTRACT

Probably all odontocetes use echolocation for spatial orientation and detection of prey. We used a four hydrophone “Y” array to record the high frequency clicks from free-ranging White-beaked Dolphins Lagenorhynchus albirostris and captive Harbour Porpoises Phocoena phocoena. From the recordings we calculated distances to the animals and source levels of the clicks. The recordings from White-beaked Dolphins were made in Iceland and those from Harbour Porpoises at Fjord & Baelt, Kerteminde, Denmark during prey capture. We used stringent criteria to determine which clicks could be defined as being on the acoustic axis. Two dolphin and nine porpoise click series could be used to track individual animals, which presumably focused on the array hydrophones or a fish right in front of the array. The apparent source levels of clicks in the individual tracks increased with range. One individual White-beaked Dolphin and three Harbour Porpoises regulate their output signal level to nearly compensate for one-way transmission loss while approaching a target. The other dolphin regulated the output differently. For most of the recordings the sound level at the target remains nearly constant and the echo level at the animal increases as it closes on the target.  相似文献

Sensitive hearing organs often employ nonlinear mechanical sound processing which produces distortion-product otoacoustic emissions. Such emissions are also recorded from insect tympanal organs. Here we report high frequency distortion-product emissions, evoked by stimulus frequencies up to 95 kHz, from the tympanal organ of a notodontid moth, Ptilodon cucullina, which contains only a single auditory receptor neuron. The 2f1–f2 distortion-product emission reaches sound levels above 40 dB SPL. Most emission growth functions show a prominent notch of 20 dB depth (n = 20 trials), accompanied by an average phase shift of 119°, at stimulus levels between 60 and 70 dB SPL, which separates a low- and a high-level component. The emissions are vulnerable to topical application of ethyl ether which shifts growth functions by about 20 dB towards higher stimulus levels. For the mammalian cochlea, Lukashkin and colleagues have proposed that distinct level-dependent components of nonlinear amplification do not necessarily require interaction of several cellular sources but could be due to a single nonlinear source. In notodontids, such a physiologically vulnerable source could be the single receptor cell. Potential contributions from accessory cells to the nonlinear properties of the scolopidial hearing organ are still unclear.  相似文献

Although the use of sounds in spatial orientation is widespread among animals, only a few groups advanced such specific adaptations as echolocation. In contrast, practically all animals and night-active species in particular, must occasionally orient themselves relative to invisible but audible objects such as a hidden rival or predator. In this study, I would like to determine the impact of locating which involves the use of acoustic parameters of sender’s vocalisations by receivers and changes of positions and triangulation of sender’s vocalisations by receivers in estimating the distance to the sender during night-time territorial interactions of the corncrake (Crex crex). Males were subjected to two kinds of stimuli: approaching one, imitating the change of the distance of the calling intruder toward the focal male while keeping the direction constant, or stationary stimuli, involving acoustic stimulation with no motion. Although males subjected to approaching stimulation moved longer distances, in both stimuli groups, males moved predominantly toward or out of the playback speaker, and only occasionally made sideway movements. However, the results gave no evidence of corncrakes moving specifically in order to locate the source of the sound; they suggest that males moved toward or away from the already located sound. The fact that males moved longer distances in response to approaching than stationary stimuli indicates that they were able to perceive the change of the distance to the playback speaker based only on structural parameters or amplitude of the calls played.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental and theoretical studies of the optical characteristics and parameters of the plasma of an atmospheric-pressure barrier discharge excited in a HgBr2: N2: He mixture, which was used as the working medium of a small-size (with a radiation area of 8 cm2) exciplex gas-discharge radiation source. The mean radiation power of 87 mW was achieved at the radiation wavelength λmax = 502 nm. The electron energy distribution function, the transport characteristics, the specific energy lost in the processes involving electrons, the electron temperature and density, and the rate constants of elastic and inelastic electron scattering by the components of the working mixture were calculated as functions of the reduced field E/N. The plasma of a discharge excited in a HgBr2: N2: He mixture can be used as the working medium of a small-size blue-green radiation source. Such a source can find application in biotechnology, photonics, and medicine and can also be used to manufacture gas-discharge display panels.  相似文献

1. Acoustically guided movement in a three‐dimensional space is a complex behavioural task performed notably by birds, bats, and some insect species. The precision of acoustic orientation depends on the directionality of the hearing system as well as on auditory behaviour. 2. The fly Emblemasoma auditrix Diptera (Sarcophagidae) is a parasitoid of the cicada Okanagana rimosa Auchenorrhyncha (Cicadidae) and locates its host in the complex habitat of a forest. The phonotactic behaviour of the fly was analysed experimentally with emphasis on the vertical domain in the field. Different experimental setups allowed discriminating subsequent steps in the phonotactic behaviour of E. auditrix. 3. During the phonotactic flight, flies first landed on landmarks, which were used to re‐adjust to the elevation of the sound source. Acoustic targets were located from these resting positions. The sound source elevation was detected at the start of the flight as the longitudinal body axis was adjusted to the inclination of the target sound source. 4. Flies usually did not land directly upon the sound source, but landed nearby, and most often above the target. Within the target area, types of movement for the final approach differed in respect to target position; flies walked predominantly if the final target was located above or below, but for horizontally located targets much of the distance was covered by flight. 5. In conclusion, E. auditrix can locate the acoustic target in complex habitats and uses a flexible multi‐step approach for short‐range phonotaxis.  相似文献

Binaural interactions was evaluated in guinea pigs by plotting the difference between the algebraic sum of brainstem evoked potentials recorded during monaural stimulation of the right and left ears and those produced by binaural stimuli. This plot was distinguished by three peaks (N1, P1, and N2) in the region of IV–IV wave latencies (short-latency acoustic evoked potentials) in the absence of masking noise, but using masking noise (signal-noise ratio: +20-0 dB), plots showed additional peaks No and Po in the region of wave III–III latencies. The amplitude of P1N2 in relation to that of wave IV of the summated potentials recording monaural stimulation of the right and left ear remains constant with an increase in the sound pressure level from 47 to 107 dB. This relationship grows with a decline in the signal-noise ratio when masking is used, while the P1N2 amplitude declines. It is postulated that binaural interaction pattern does not change when the clicking sound increases in intensity and that distinctive aspects of neurophysiological mechanisms underlying binaural interaction emerge during masking with a signal-noise ratio of +20-0 dB.Institute of Otolaryngology, Ministry of Public Health of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev. Summary Using a target simulator three serotine bats,Eptesicus serotinus, were trained to judge whether a phantom target was present or absent. The echolocation sounds emitted by the bats during the detection were intercepted by a microphone, amplified and returned by a loudspeaker as an artificial echo, with a delay of 3.2 ms and a sound level determined by the overall gain and cry amplitude. The cry level of each pulse was measured and the echo level received by the bat was calculated. The target was presented in 50% of the trials and the gain adjusted using conventional up/down procedures. Under these conditions between 40 and 48 dB peSPL were required for 50% detection (Figs. 2, 3).In a subsequent experiment the phantom target was masked with white noise (No) with a spectrum level of –113 dB re. 1 Pa·Hz–1/2. The thresholds were increased by 7–14 dB. Energy density (S) of a single pulse was measured and used to estimate S/No, which ranged from 36–49 dB at threshold. Theoretically the coherent receiver model predicts the ratio between hits and false alarms observed for the bats at a S/No of ca. 1–2 dB. 1.  We tested the long-standing hypothesis that female frogs are attracted to the sound of a chorus of conspecific males from a distance. We studied the barking treefrog (Hyla gratiosa) because the location of choruses is unpredictable; thus, chorus sound indicates the presence of conspecific males as well as the location of a suitable breeding site.
2.  We measured the sound pressure level (SPL in dB re 20 Pa) in the 500 Hz octave band at various distances from choruses. The primary spectral peak in the advertisement call of this species is 400–500 Hz.
3.  The pattern of chorus sound attenuation in the 500 Hz band at two different sites was very similar and generally followed the pattern expected from geometrical spreading from a point source (Fig. 3). At one of the sites the SPL measured near ground level was always higher than that at a point 1 m above the ground (Fig. 3).
4.  Spectral analyses of the chorus sound at different distances showed that the low-frequency spectral peak in the range of 400–500 Hz was a prominent component, especially at 80–160 m (Figs. 1, 4). Amplitude peaks that corresponded to individual calls ofH. gratiosa and other species were also evident in oscillograms of recordings made at 160 m (Fig. 1).
5.  Gravid females oriented and moved toward a source of conspecific chorus sounds (originally recorded at 160 m from the pond) played back at 38–40 dB SPL in the 500 Hz octave band (Fig. 1, Table 1). Background noise levels were 43–47 dB SPL (C-weighted) and 24–25 dB SPL in the 500 Hz octave band.
6.  In a two-stimulus, choice experiment, females ofH. gratiosa always chose the source of a mixed chorus (H. gratiosa andH. cinerea) sound with conspecific males to a source of a pure chorus sound ofH. cinerea (Fig. 2, Table 2).

N,N-Dimethylformamidase (DMFase) from Alcaligenes sp. strain KUFA-1, a bacterium that can grow on N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the sole carbon and nitrogen source, catalyzes the first step of the DMF degradation. The DMFase gene dmfA1A2 was cloned in Escherichia coli, and its nucleotides were sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequence of the enzyme consisted of two α- and two β-subunits with 132 and 762 amino acids, respectively, and had little similarity to sequences in protein databases, including various amidases. The protein may be a new kind of amidase. DMFase activity was detected in E. coli cells transformed with an expression plasmid of the cloned DMFase gene. The properties of recombinant DMFase purified from E. coli were identical to those of Alcaligenes DMFase.  相似文献

The EEG was recorded in 12- to 13-year-old adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). During the EEG recording, the subjects performed an attention test. Pairs of tone stimuli in the combinations low–low and low–high were presented in random order with equal probabilities with intervals of 2.3 s. Subjects had to press a button as soon as possible in response to low–low tone pair presentation (a go trial) and not to press the button when a pair consisting of low and high tones was presented (a no-go trial). On the basis of the results of the test performance (the numbers of omissions and false alarms), the subjects were divided into three groups characterized by the degree of severity of the attentional disorder. The evoked potentials in go and no-go trials were detected individually for the subject groups and each derivation. The components N1, N2, P2, P3-go, and P3-no-go were identified in the evoked potentials. These components had different latencies and were differently localized over the head surface. Only the amplitudes of P3-go and P3-no-go in the subjects were statistically significantly correlated with the severity of the attentional disorder.  相似文献

Bacterial growth in the rhizosphere and resulting changes in plant growth parameters were studied in small aseptic seedlings of birch (Betula pendula and B. pubescens) and grasses (Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra). The seedlings were inoculated with three Frankia strains (Ai1a and Ag5b isolated from native Alnus root nodules and Ai17 from a root nodule induced by soil originating from a Betula pendula stand), and three associative N2-fixing bacteria (Enterobacter agglomerans, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas sp., isolated from grass roots). Microscopic observations showed that all the Frankia strains were able to colonize and grow on the root surface of the plants tested without addition of an exogenous carbon source. No net growth of the associative N2-fixers was observed in the rhizosphere, although inoculum viable counts were maintained over the experimental period. Changes in both the biomass and morphology of plant seedlings in response to bacterial inoculation were recorded, which were more dependent on the plant species than on the bacterial strain.  相似文献

The amplitude–temporal parameters of long-latency components of evoked potentials (recorded in symmetrical leads of the parietal regions) were studied during listening to short fragments of classical musical works, which had different emotional expressiveness, presented to healthy subjects by different modes. In random order of presentation, the maximal markedness of the N1-P2 complex and the P3 wave was found to be observed for fragments causing predominantly negative emotional experiences, while the minimal amplitude values and the highest values of the latencies were observed in response to presentation of a musical fragment assessed as emotionally neutral. Significantly higher amplitude values of these oscillations were recorded in the right parietal lead as compared to the left. The data obtained are interpreted in the context of the specific features of perception of short musical fragments in a human with the use of data concerning functional interhemispheric asymmetry when opposite-sign emotional experiences occur.  相似文献

The effect of nitrogen fertilization on the life table parameters of green apple aphids, feeding on apple saplings of different nutritional quality, was investigated. The experiments were carried out with cloned apple plants (cv. Golden Delicious), all originating from one seed, growing in a climate chamber under constant conditions. The apple saplings were irrigated with nutrient solutions containing different nitrogen levels (0.2, 0.5, 1, and 3 N), and infested with Aphis pomi De Geer. The 1 N treatment corresponded to a 15 mM nitrogen concentration, containing NO3 - and NH4 + in a 14:1 ratio. The levels of nitrogen fertilization studied here influenced the life table parameters of A. pomi in the following way: the mean generation time of A. pomi, growing on the 0.5 N treatment, was lower than the corresponding values found on the 0.2 and 1 N treatments. The highest net reproduction rate was produced on low (0.2 N) nitrogen nutrition. The intrinsic rate of natural increase was highest on the 0.5 N treatment.  相似文献
