Body size and the adoption of a migratory tactic in brook charr   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The presence of a conditional strategy based on size attained before migration and a sex-ratio at migration biased towards females were explored in a population of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis in the Sainte-Marguerite River, Quebec Province, Canada, where anadromous and resident forms live sympatrically. Seaward migration in the system occurred at 1 and 2 years old. Comparisons between backcalculated size-at-age of migrant and resident fish revealed that smaller fish at age 1 year delay migration to the following year and that bigger fish either migrated at age 1 year or remained resident for the rest of their life-cycle. Slow growth was associated with migration later in life (age 2 years) at a bigger size, which is consistent with the hypothesis of a threshold size for migration. No difference in size at age 1 year between migrant and resident fish suggests that other factors, such as growth efficiency and the presence of heritability of the tactics, are involved. Overall the sex ratio was equal for migrant and resident fish, while an age-specific bias was found: more males migrated at age 1 year and more females at age 2 years. These differences suggest that different tactics are adopted by different sexes.  相似文献

The importance of directional selection relative to neutral evolution may be determined by comparing quantitative genetic variation in phenotype (Q(ST)) to variation at neutral molecular markers (F(ST)). Quantitative divergence between salmonid life history types is often considerable, but ontogenetic changes in the significance of major sources of genetic variance during post-hatch development suggest that selective differentiation varies by developmental stage. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that maternal genetic differentiation between anadromous and resident brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill) populations for early quantitative traits (embryonic size/growth, survival, egg number and developmental time) would be greater than neutral genetic differentiation, but that the maternal genetic basis for differentiation would be higher for pre-resorption traits than post-resorption traits. Quantitative genetic divergence between anadromous (seawater migratory) and resident Laval River (Québec) brook charr based on maternal genetic variance was high (Q(ST) > 0.4) for embryonic length, yolk sac volume, embryonic growth rate and time to first response to feeding relative to neutral genetic differentiation [F(ST) = 0.153 (0.071-0.214)], with anadromous females having positive genetic coefficients for all of the above characters. However, Q(ST) was essentially zero for all traits post-resorption of the yolk sac. Our results indicate that the observed divergence between resident and anadromous brook charr has been driven by directional selection, and may therefore be adaptive. Moreover, they provide among the first evidence that the relative importance of selective differentiation may be highly context-specific, and varies by genetic contributions to phenotype by parental sex at specific points in offspring ontogeny. This in turn suggests that interpretations of Q(ST)-F(ST) comparisons may be improved by considering the structure of quantitative genetic architecture by age category and the sex of the parent used in estimation.  相似文献

To determine the genetic relationship of anadromous and resident life-history types within and among drainages, and compare several hatchery strains to their progenitor populations, brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis were examined for allozyme and mitochondrial DNA variation. Greater genetic similarity of sympatric anadromous and resident charr was found compared to similar life-history forms allopatrically, suggesting the two life-history types are not reproductively isolated. Low divergence among the mtDNA haplotypes suggests that the two life-history types are members of the same evolutionary lineage. Population differentiation from mtDNA data exceeded that from estimates based on allozymes. Genetic deviations from expectations suggest that the hatchery strains were derived from few individuals.  相似文献

We determined the amount and temporal stability of genetic differentiation among brook cham sampled from five rivers on Cape Race, Newfoundland, with an electrophoretic analysis of 42 protein coding loci. Fish from four of these rivers were analysed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). A single mtDNA clone was observed in all rivers sampled, except one, where 47% offish were from a different and relatively divergent clone (0.31 % sequence divergence). In contrast, Cape Race brook charr show large amounts of genetic differentiation at six enzyme coding loci; Nei's genetic distance ranged between 0,020 and 0.048. This differentiation is relatively stable as no significant differences in allele frequencies were detected between fish sampled from two rivers over two consecutive years. The most divergent population based on protein polymorphism is not that with two mtDNA clonal lineages. In contrast to the commonly held view, mtDNA analyses do not necessarily provide greater resolution of population structure than allozyme analyses.  相似文献

In the field, juvenile brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis inhabiting high-velocity water were found to have larger caudal fins and more slender bodies than those inhabiting low-velocity water. Young-of-the-year S. fontinalis were reared in either a high- or low-velocity treatment for 16 weeks and their morphology was measured bi-weekly. From the second to fourth weeks of the experiment onwards, fish reared in the high-velocity treatment had larger maximum caudal fin heights and deeper caudal peduncles than fish reared in the low-velocity treatment. This study demonstrated that the morphological variation in caudal area exhibited by wild juvenile brook charr from microhabitats differing in water velocity could be a consequence of phenotypic plasticity in response to hydrological conditions.  相似文献

Seawater acclimation of diploid (FF) and triploid (F2F) brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis , diploid (AA) Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus , and diploid (FA) and triploid (F2A) hybrids between female brook charr and male Arctic charr was investigated. Triploidization of brook charr and the hybrid did not have any effect on the acclimation. Seawater acclimation of the hybrid was achieved during the experimental period and was comparable to that observed in brook charr. Acclimation could not be ascertained in Arctic charr since the level of cortisol, a stress indicator, was still high at the end of the experiment. No relationship between either length or condition factors and plasma osmolality was observed. Elevated plasma cortisol concentrations in Arctic charr and in diploid or triploid hybrids, both in fresh water and sea water, indicate more favourable rearing conditions for brook charr.  相似文献

Twenty-one metazoan parasite species were found in Arctic charr at three coastal sites in west Greenland, including Neascus sp. and the nematode Pseudoterranova decipiens , new records for Arctic charr. Twelve species are new records for Arctic charr in Greenland. The quantitative composition of the parasite communities varied, but the freshwater species ( Diphyllobothrium ditremwn, Eubothriutn salvelini, Proteocephalus longicollis, Crepidostotnutn farianis ) were usually numerically dominant, even in anadromous fish. The absence from Greenland of Mysidacea, Amphipoda, Ephemeroptera and Odonata excludes parasites requiring such organisms as intermediate hosts, including the cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus , nematodes of the genus Cystidicola , and freshwater acanthocephalans.  相似文献

Despite the abundance of studies of genetic diversity in freshwater fishes, few have specifically addressed the role of habitat structure in partitioning genetic variance within and among populations. In this study, we analysed the variability of six microsatellite loci among 24 brook charr population samples in order to correlate hydrographic structure with genetic organization. These populations originated from three Canadian National parks (Kouchibouguac, Fundy and Forillon) that showed distinct hydrographic structure. Considering the general characteristics of these habitats, we formulated specific hypotheses in regard to genetic structure, which were principally based on the potential for gene flow and population size associated with each habitat. The hierarchical analysis of molecular variance and the genetic distances computed among populations revealed that habitat structure analyses constitute an important, but insufficient, predictor of genetic structure. We discuss the importance of habitat complexity on genetic structure in the context of management and conservation.  相似文献

A primary toxic action of manganese to brook charr, Sulvelinusjonfinalis, at concentrations near or above the 96 h LC50 was the disruption of sodium regulation. Body and plasma sodium concentrations of brook charr declined by 52 and 40%, respectively, during exposure to 10.9 mM manganese (in 250 PM CaCI), and all fish died within 36 h. Sodium balance was less severely affected by 2.7 and 5.5 mM manganese. An increase in the external calcium concentration from 0.05 to 1.0 mM raised the LC50 for manganese from 4.9 to 5.8 mM, and a further increase to 2.5 mM calcium almost doubled it to 10.2 mM. An examination of stable manganese uptake by the gills revealed that accumulation was inversely correlated with body sodium concentration (r =−0.77). Radioactive J4Mn entered the bloodstream in low levels and accumulated in the liver. Thus manganese may have systemic effects as well as those attributable to surface binding on the gill. Studies of the mechanism ofdissolved iron toxicity were less conclusive, but it did not appear to involve extensive disruption of sodium balance. There was about a 15% drop in body sodium concentration when the trout were exposed for 48 h to the 96 h LC50 level of iron, but plasma sodium was unaffected. Also, an iron concentration at twice the LC50 did not escalate the loss of body sodium, and increasing the water calcium concentration did not raise the LC50.  相似文献

Synopsis The age structures of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) and ouananiche (Salmo salar) stocks inhabiting a large rapid the river Méo, tributary to the Caniapiscau River were used to compare population stability and production of these species in north central Quebec. The brook chart stock was stable whereas ouananiche showed considerable variation in year class strength. Stock estimates were not significantly different for the two species although the brook charr estimate was 1.5 that of the ouananiche. Production estimates differed by a greater margin because of different growth patterns. Brook chair production was estimated at 19.4 kg ha−1 yr−1. Above age 2+ it was 11.4 kg ha−1 yr−1 which compares with 4.8 kg ha−1 yr−1 for the same age groups of ouananiche.  相似文献

The brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis; Osteichthyes: Salmonidae) is a phenotypically diverse fish species inhabiting much of North America. But relatively few genetic diagnostic resources are available for this fish species. We isolated 41 microsatellites from S. fontinalis polymorphic in one or more species of salmonid fish. Thirty‐seven were polymorphic in brook charr, 15 in the congener Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and 14 in the lake charr (Salvelinus namaycush). Polymorphism was also relatively high in Oncorhynchus, where 21 loci were polymorphic in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and 16 in cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) but only seven and four microsatellite loci were polymorphic in the more distantly related lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), respectively. One duplicated locus (Sfo228Lav) was polymorphic at both duplicates in S. fontinalis.  相似文献

Genetic data suggest that the littoral and pelagic forms of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis in Lake Bondi are two populations with partial reproductive isolation and non-random mating. Genetic differentiation between the two groups was supported by differences in allele frequencies and by deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium when the two groups were pooled; no such deviation was observed when fish were divided into littoral and pelagic groups. In contrast to Lake Bondi, no clear evidence of genetic differentiation was observed in Lake Ledoux. Discriminant function analyses of morphological characters support the existence of littoral and pelagic groups in Bondi and Ledoux Lakes. In Lake Bondi, the two groups differed significantly in two shape variables (pelagic fish had shorter dorsal fins, and longer body length posterior to the dorsal fin than littoral ones) whereas in Lake Ledoux, the groups differed in four shape variables (pelagic fish had shorter pectoral fins, shorter dorsal fins, and a shorter and higher caudal peduncle than littoral ones). Discriminant analyses of these characters were effective in reclassifying fish into their appropriate groups in both populations, with an efficiency of 78% for juveniles in Lake Bondi and 69% for adults in Lake Ledoux. Differences in morphology between the two forms are consistent with adaptations required to forage in each zone, i.e. benthic form in the littoral zone and planktivorous form in the pelagic zone.  相似文献

The δ13C, δ15N and δ34S isotope values of newly emerged, brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis alevins (free‐swimming individuals beginning exogenous feeding) were examined to determine if progeny of anadromous female spawners could be detected and their contributions to reproduction assessed in river systems with mixed migration strategies. Separation of anadromous and freshwater resident and immigrant sources of progeny could be detected primarily using δ13C values before alevins reached a size of 28 mm fork length and c . 20 days after exogenous feeding began. Among 10 populations, the contributions of anadromous females ranged from 0 to 42% of newly emerged alevins. Correlations between anadromous contributions and estimates of total brook trout density and alevin production were unexpectedly negative.  相似文献

The abundance, growth, spatial distribution, and feeding habits of five allopatric brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, populations (young-of-the-year, 0+ juveniles; YOY) were compared with five other populations living sympatrically with white sucker, Catostomus commersoni. The study was made in oligotrophic lakes of the Laurentian Shield (Québec, Canada) during three sampling periods in 1989 (July, August and September). The abundance of YOY charr was significantly higher in allopatric than in sympatric populations (45·3 ± 3·8 vs 3·4 ± 3·8 fish/lake caught in 1773 m2 of gillnets; P<0·005). The mean length of YOY charr did not differ among allopatric and sympatric populations at each sampling period; July: 60·2 ± 3·0 vs 60·0 ± 4·5 mm; August: 61·9 ± 4·5 vs 63·2 ± 4·1 mm; September: 77·9 ± 8·7 vs 77·3 ± 7·8 mm respectively. Horizontal distribution of allopatric YOY charr did not differ from that of sympatric charr, 65% of the fish being captured within the first 2 m depth and the rest between 2 and 7 m depth. In contrast, the vertical distribution of allopatric YOY charr from both communities was significantly different; 81% of allopatric charr were captured within 0·5 m from the substrate compared to 64% for sympatric charr (P<0·001). Differences in vertical distribution of the fish were related to differences in diet; allopatric charr fed mainly on benthic and large planktonic organisms whereas sympatric charr fed less on these organisms and more on terrestrial organisms. In the lake where YOY charr were most abundant, individuals were spatially segregated into two groups; one ‘littoral’, found in 0–2m depth, and one ‘profundal’, found in 3–6 m depth. Growth, condition, and feeding habits of charr from the two groups were different, especially during the last sampling period.  相似文献

Brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis , exhibited depressed plasma sodium and elevated plasma glucose concentrations in untreated acid mine drainage effluent (AMD), at two dilutions. Plasma sodium and glucose concentrations remained stable in treated AMD, pulsed, fluidized beds of limestone and carbon-dioxide pre-treatment of influent, and in AMD-free water. Results indicate that effluents produced by this treatment system were not toxic to these fish, despite still containing moderate concentrations of manganese (3–4 mg l-1 following dilution in exposure systems), and provide justification for field deployment and further biological testing of this treatment in the field.  相似文献

We investigated the structure of interindividual variations in the diet of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) based on stomach contents data of 3776 charr captured in 69 lakes of the Canadian Shield (Québec, Canada); 29 of these contained allopatric brook charr populations, 24 contained brook charr and creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus) and 16 contained brook charr and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). In any given lake, some of the charr fed almost exclusively on benthic organisms (benthic specialists, i.e., mean percent weight of benthic prey >90%), others, almost exclusively on pelagic prey (pelagic specialists, i.e., mean percent weight of benthic prey <10%), and a lesser proportion were generalist feeders (i.e. mean percent weight of benthic prey between 10 and 90%). The proportion of benthic and pelagic specialists were respectively 41.3 and 18% in allopatric brook charr populations. These proportions fit remarkably well with those based on interindividual preferences in spatial distribution, identified through radio-telemetry in another study done in two lakes of the same area. The proportion of benthic specialists was related to competition for benthic organisms with creek chub and white sucker. The effect of white sucker on brook charr diet was more pronounced than that of creek chub: the proportion of benthic specialists among brook charr decreased from 41.3% in allopatry to 19.7% in sympatry with creek chub, and to 9.9% in sympatry with white sucker. Other response variables of brook charr populations also indicate that white sucker is a stronger competitor than creek chub in this system. Because sucker and chub were introduced in these lakes during the last century, phenotypic responses of brook charr to interspecific competition appear to be rapid. Furthermore, in addition to providing a strong field support to the current hypothesis that polymorphism is promoted by arelaxation of interspecific competition, our results also indicate that phenotypic response of brook charr (i.e. the proportion of each form in a given lake) is related to the intensity of this competition.  相似文献

1. Dispersal can be a major determinant of the distribution and abundance of animals, as well as a key mechanism linking behaviour to population dynamics, but progress in understanding dispersal has been hampered by the lack of a general framework for modelling dispersal. 2. This study tested the capacity of simple models to summarize and predict the lake-wide dispersal of an emerging cohort of young-of-the-year brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis, over 12 surveys conducted during a 2-month period. 3. The models are based on two types of dispersal kernel, the normal distribution from a simple diffusion process, and a Laplace distribution depicting exponential decay of the frequency of dispersers away from the point of origin. In all, four models were assessed: one-group diffusion (D1S) and exponential (E1S) models assuming homogeneous dispersal behaviour within the cohort, and two-group diffusion (D2S) and exponential (E2S) models accounting for intrapopulation differences in dispersal between sedentary and mobile individuals. 4. A rigorous cross-validation, based on calibrating the models to the distributions from the first two surveys only and then validating them on the remaining 10 distributions, was used to compare model predictions with observed values for five properties of the dispersal distributions: counts in individual shoreline sections; mean lateral displacement, variance and kurtosis of displacements; and the percentage of long-distance dispersers. 5. Substantial intrapopulation heterogeneity in dispersal behaviour was apparent: 83% of all individuals were estimated to be sedentary and the remainder mobile. Remarkably, the two-group exponential model E2S - calibrated to data from only two surveys conducted 3.5 and 8.5 days after the beginning of emergence - predicted reasonably well all properties of the spatial distribution of the cohort until the end of the study, 7 weeks later. 6. Standardized measures of mobility derived from simple models may lead to better understanding of population dynamics and improved management. Specifically, the ability to accurately predict long-distance dispersal may be critical to assessing population persistence and cohort strength whenever key habitats, such as refugia or productive areas supporting a large proportion of the cohort, are sparsely distributed or distant from the point of origin.  相似文献

In this study, an anadromous strain (L) and a freshwater‐resident (R) strain of brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis as well as their reciprocal hybrids, were reared in a common environment and submitted to swimming tests combined with salinity challenges. The critical swimming speeds (Ucrit) of the different crosses were measured in both fresh (FW) and salt water (SW) and the variations in several physiological traits (osmotic, energetic and metabolic capacities) that are predicted to influence swimming performance were documented. Anadromous and resident fish reached the same Ucrit in both FW and SW, with Ucrit being 14% lower in SW compared with FW. The strains, however, seemed to use different underlying strategies: the anadromous strain relied on its streamlined body shape and higher osmoregulatory capacity, while the resident strain had greater citrate synthase (FW) and lactate dehydrogenase (FW, SW) capacity and either greater initial stores or more efficient use of liver (FW, SW) and muscle (FW) glycogen during exercise. Compared with RL hybrids, LR hybrids had a 20% lower swimming speed, which was associated with a 24% smaller cardio‐somatic index and higher physiological costs. Thus swimming performance depends on cross direction (i.e. which parental line was used as dam or sire). The study thus suggests that divergent physiological factors between anadromous and resident S. fontinalis may result in similar swimming capacities that are adapted to their respective lifestyles.  相似文献
