Protists are integral to marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles; however, there is a paucity of data describing specific ecological niches for some of the most abundant taxa in marker gene libraries. Syndiniales are one such group, often representing the majority of sequence reads recovered from picoplankton samples across the global ocean. However, the prevalence and impacts of syndinian parasitism in marine environments remain unclear. We began to address these critical knowledge gaps by generating a high-resolution time series (March–October 2018) in a productive coastal pond. Seasonal shifts in protist populations, including parasitic Syndiniales, were documented during periods of higher primary productivity and increased summer temperature-driven stratification. Elevated concentrations of infected hosts and free-living parasite spores occurred at nearly monthly intervals in July, August, and September. We suggest intensifying stratification during this period correlated with the increased prevalence of dinoflagellates that were parasitized by Group II Syndiniales. Infections in some protist populations were comparable to previously reported large single-taxon dinoflagellate blooms. Infection dynamics in Salt Pond demonstrated the propagation of syndinian parasites through mixed protist assemblages and highlighted patterns of host/parasite interactions that better reflect many other marine environments where single taxon blooms are uncommon.  相似文献

Allee effects are thought to mediate the dynamics of population colonization, particularly for invasive species. However, Allee effects acting on parasites have rarely been considered in the analogous process of infectious disease establishment and spread. We studied the colonization of uninfected wild juvenile Pacific salmon populations by ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) over a 4-year period. In a data set of 68,376 fish, we observed 85 occurrences of precopular pair formation among 1,259 preadult female and 613 adult male lice. The probability of pair formation was dependent on the local abundance of lice, but this mate limitation is likely offset somewhat by mate-searching dispersal of males among host fish. A mathematical model of macroparasite population dynamics that incorporates the empirical results suggests a high likelihood of a demographic Allee effect, which can cause the colonizing parasite populations to die out. These results may provide the first empirical evidence for Allee effects in a macroparasite. Furthermore, the data give a rare detailed view of Allee effects in colonization dynamics and suggest that Allee effects may dampen the spread of parasites in a coastal marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Tidal effects on the composition of free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) bacterial communities were studied in a tidal flat ecosystem in the southern North Sea. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis targeting the 16S rRNA gene and the 16S rRNA of Bacteria, Bacteroidetes, Alphaproteobacteria and the Roseobacter clade was applied. Despite strong tidal variations in the quantity and, depending on the season, also the quality of suspended matter as well as variations in bacterial activity, the bacterial community composition remained rather stable. FISH showed some variations of the community composition, but these were not related to typical tidal situations. Variations were higher during tidal cycles in May and July compared with November. Bacteroidetes, Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria constituted the majority of the bacterial communities but relative proportions of the different groups varied considerably. On particles, Betaproteobacteria were also detected to substantial proportions. The Roseobacter clade constituted up to 90% of FL but only 30% of PA Alphaproteobacteria. Banding patterns of the Bacteroidetes-specific amplicons, and in particular those targeting the 16S rRNA, revealed tidally induced effects, as several bands appeared or disappeared at distinct events such as slack water or resuspension. Sequencing of prominent bands revealed predominantly phylotypes reported previously from this ecosystem.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific niche overlap for two mayfly species with similar life cycle timing, Rhithrogena semicolorata and Ecdyonurus sp. gr. venosus, were investigated. The nymphs were classified into 5 classes according to size and spatial overlaps are measured along a substratum roughness gradient. Substratum roughness selection was investigated by defining utilisation curves, optimum and tolerance values of the nymphs in relation to larval growth. Differences between species and size classes within each species were observed. Ecdyonurus sp. gr. venosus dominated on rough substrates, whereas R. semicolorata was most abundant on smooth substrates. An intermediate value of total interspecific substratum roughness overlap (0.49) was found. Higher intraspecific than interspecific overlap values suggested a spatial niche segregation between the two species. The results suggested that the spatial niches measured, were closer to the `fundamental niches' than could be expected if competition was acting on the two studied populations.  相似文献

The hypothesis that similar processes govern interannual dynamics of green spruce aphid in the UK and France, is generally supported by the application of a general discrete model. A simple model based on relatively few parameters was able to closely characterise interannual population dynamics from completely independent aerial and arboreal samples of aphids. Long-term field population estimates of the green spruce aphid Elatobium abietinum (Walker) in France have provided the opportunity to select and evaluate the generality of a model, which was developed in the UK to explain the year-to-year variations in peak abundance of the aphid. The objective was to observe the influence of the local climates and disturbing climate factors on the population densities of the insect in two regions of France. The model uses climate variables and aphid population data from regular samples in the two regions that were investigated. A general discrete model was used to predict aphid population densities. The model performed well in tracking the interannual patterns of population but was less likely to predict absolute population density. To improve predictions, further account would need to be taken of additional site-specific climate variables and the strength of overcompensating density dependence. Nevertheless, it is clear that broadly similar processes are at work in the population dynamics of this insect across its biogeographical range.  相似文献

Transformations and fluxes of N were examined in three forested sites located along a gradient of soil texture in the coastal forests of the Waquoit Bay watershed on Cape Cod. Total N leaching losses to ground water were 0.5 kg ha-1 yr-1 in the loamy sand site and 1.5 kg ha-1 yr-1 in the fine sand site. Leaching loss to groundwater was not measured in the coarse sand site due to the prohibitive depth of the water table but total N leaching loss to 1m depth in the mineral soil was 3.9 kg ha-1 yr-1. DON accounted for most of the leaching losses below the rooting zone (77–89%) and through the soil profile to ground water (60%–80%). Differences in DON retention capacity of the mineral soil in the sites along the soil texture gradient were most likely related to changes in mineral soil particle surface area and percolation rates associated with soil texture. Forests of the watershed functioned as a sink for inorganic N deposited on the surface of the watershed in wet and dry deposition but a source of dissolved organic N to ground water and adjoining coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

Mangrove gastropods are largely recognised for their roles as benthic deposit feeders that consume macrophyte-derived detritus. However, microalgae may also make a significant contribution towards the diet of these snails. Here we provide the first report on the rates at which microphytobenthos (MPB) is consumed by Terebralia palustris, an Indo-Pacific mangrove gastropod. Although juvenile T. palustris are generally detritivorous, there is increasing evidence that their occurrence on the seaward edge of the mangrove habitat allows them to incorporate a more nutritious food source to their diets in the form of microalgae. Using an experimental approach that incorporated fluorometric techniques, we found that the feeding activity of T. palustris on MPB was not clearly related to diel and tidal cycles at the subtropical location of Kosi Bay, South Africa during two sampling occasions in February and July 2015. However, a faster ingestion rate and higher consumption/digestion efficiency were recorded during experiments carried out in July. On this sampling occasion a higher percentage consumption of the available MPB was recorded, which corresponded to a lower per-capita availability in this resource. As T. palustris is able to consume MPB at variable rates, the impact of this species on benthic primary productivity within Indo-Pacific mangroves should not be overlooked when considering its integral ecological role within these threatened habitats.  相似文献

Meiofaunal prominence and benthic seasonality in a coastal marine ecosystem   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
Summary The muds of a shallow (7 m) site in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island contained higher abundances of meiofauna (averaging 17×106 individuals per m2 and ash free dry weight of 2.9 g/m2 during a 3 year period) than have been found in any other sediment. The majority of sublittoral muds, worldwide, have been reported to contain about 106 individuals per m2. This difference is attributed primarily to differences in sampling techniques and laboratory processing.Extremely high meiofaunal abundances may have also occurred because Narragansett Bay sediments were a foodrich environment. While the quantity of organic deposition in the bay is not unusually high for coastal waters, this input, primarily composed of diatom detritus, may contain an unusually high proportion of labile organics. Furthermore, meiofauna could have thrived because of spatial segregation of meiofauna and macrofauna. While meiofauna were concentrated at the sediment-water interface, most macrofauna were subsurface deposit feeders. Macrofaunal competition with, and ingestion of meiofauna may thus have been minimized.The seasonal cycles of meiofauna and macrofauna were similar. Highest abundances and biomass were observed in May and June and lowest values in the late summer and fall. Springtime increases of meiofaunal abundance were observed in all depth horizons, to 10 cm. We hypothesize that phytoplankton detritus accumulated in the sediment during the winter and early spring, and that the benthos responded to this store of food when temperatures rose rapidly in the late spring. By late summer, the stored detritus was exhausted and the benthos declined.  相似文献

Vegetation development following goat removal in a tropical grassland with a Mediterranean rainfall seasonality on leeward Hawaii is reported from two permanent monitoring sites. The two sites are equipped with experimental exclosures against feral goats. The sites were monitored annually for a decade (1971–80) for changes in cover by species. The vegetation changes reported relate to both inside- and outside-exclosure developments.Four dynamic categories were recognized among the grassland species following goat removal. These are the decreasers, the increasers and the persistent species. The latter were divided into stable and oscillating persisters. Attention was drawn to the oscillating persisters, as exemplified by the endemic vine Canavalia kauensis, and to the absence of any correlation of its oscillation pattern to the variation in year-to-year rainfall. It was concluded that the oscillation pattern resides in the population it self and can be attributed to its life-cycle phases. It is suggested that synchronized life-cycle dependent death in local populations is an important dynamic phenomenon in certain plant communities. This phenomenon may be considered as separate from phenology and succession, but of similar significance in understanding the processes of vegetation dynamics.Nomenclature of plant names follows St. John (1973).  相似文献

The responses of ecological communities and ecosystems to increased rates of environmental change will be strongly influenced by variation in the diversity of community composition. Yet, our understanding of how diversity is affected by rising temperatures is inconclusive and mainly based on indirect evidence or short‐term experiments. In our study, we analyse the diversity and species turnover of benthic epilithic communities within the thermal flume of a nuclear power plant at the Swedish coast. This flume covers the range of predicted future temperature rises. Species composition was significantly different between control sites and sites with higher temperatures. We found that temperature had little effect on the number of species in three functional groups (macroinvertebrates, benthic diatoms, and macrophytes, which here comprise multicellular algae and macroscopic colonies of unicellular algae and cyanobacteria), neither at single sampling dates nor summed for the entire observation year. However, species turnover significantly increased with increasing temperature for diatoms, macrophytes and invertebrates. Different temperature regimes resulted in significantly different species composition and indicator species. Thus, increasing temperatures in the thermal flume increased temporal beta‐diversity and decreased compositional stability of communities, although observed richness did not change at any point in time. We highlight the need to investigate the consequences of such declines in compositional stability for functional stability of ecosystem processes.  相似文献

The relative importance of biotic (top-down) vs. abiotic (bottom-up) controls on phytoplankton dynamics was investigated in the York River estuary, Virginia (USA) by a combination of extensive analyses of long-term data sets collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitoring program over 17 years (1984–2001), field studies (1996–1997) and ecosystem modeling analyses. Results from the analysis of long-term data records collected at three stations along the salinity gradient suggested that phytoplankton are more likely controlled by abiotic mechanisms such as resource limitation than biotic mechanisms such as grazing since annual cycles of primary production and phytoplankton biomass were similar and no grazing effects were evident based on the observed relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass (R 2 < 0.2, p > 0.1). This scenario was supported by short-term field observations made over an annual cycle at three stations in the mid-channel of the estuary where both chlorophyll a and primary production demonstrated similar patterns of seasonal variation. Ratios of fluorescence before and after acidification at all study sites were relatively high suggesting low grazing pressure in the estuary. A tidally-averaged, size-structured plankton ecosystem model was previously developed and verified for the lower York River estuary. The validated ecosystem model was also used to examine this issue and simulation results supported the importance of bottom-up control in the York River estuary.  相似文献

The dynamics of the nutrient pools and their stoichiometry as well as their control by ecosystem metabolism (benthic and planktonic) and benthic–pelagic exchanges (sedimentation rates and sediment waterfluxes) were examined in the Mediterranean littoral (Blanes Bay, NE Spain). Dissolved organic nitrogen comprised about half of the nitrogen present in the water column and the carbon pool was dominated by the inorganic pool (95% of the carbon present in the water column). The dissolved and particulate organic pools were deficient in P relative to C and N, indicating a rapid recycling of P from organic matter. The pelagic compartment was heterotrophic, supported by significant allochthonous inputs of land material, which also contributed greatly to the sedimentary inputs (37% of total sedimenting carbon). In contrast, the benthic compartment was autotrophic, with the excess net benthic community production balancing the deficit in pelagic community production, leading to metabolic equilibrium at the station studied. Sedimentary inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon exceeded the benthic release, indicating that the benthic compartment acted as a sink for nutrients, consistent with its autotrophic nature. Carbon inputs to the benthic compartment also exceeded requirements, due to the allochthonous subsidies to the system, so that the benthic compartment stored or exported organic carbon. Marine ecosystems are complex adaptive systems with physical and biological processes operating on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Here, we present an operational regional indicator for California's continental shelf system and investigate its skill in predicting a variety of biological responses across trophic levels. This updated Multivariate Ocean Climate Indicator (MOCI) version 2 includes data that are readily available from the Internet so the indicator can be automatically updated and shared regularly. MOCIv.2 is a simplified version of MOCIv.1, but it captures ocean-climate variability similarly. MOCIv.2 illustrates all major ENSO events that occurred over the past 25 years as well as the phasing and magnitude of the most recent North Pacific marine heat wave, dubbed ‘The Blob’. It also shows differences in the magnitude and timing of ocean-climate variability in different regions off California. MOCIv.2 has skill in nowcasting marine ecosystem dynamics, from zooplankton to top predators, and therefore may be useful in establishing bio-physical relationships important to ecosystem-based fisheries and wildlife management in California.  相似文献

Here we describe the characterization of a lipoprotein previously proposed as a potential Bacillus anthracis virulence determinant and vaccine candidate. This protein, designated MntA, is the solute-binding component of a manganese ion ATP-binding cassette transporter. Coupled proteomic-serological screen of a fully virulent wild-type B. anthracis Vollum strain, confirmed that MntA is expressed both in vitro and during infection. Expression of MntA is shown to be independent of the virulence plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. An mntA deletion, generated by allelic replacement, results in complete loss of MntA expression and its phenotypic analysis revealed: (i) impaired growth in rich media, alleviated by manganese supplementation; (ii) increased sensitivity to oxidative stress; and (iii) delayed release from cultured macrophages. The DeltamntA mutant expresses the anthrax-associated classical virulence factors, lethal toxin and capsule, in vitro as well as in vivo, and yet the mutation resulted in severe attenuation; a 10(4)-fold drop in LD(50) in a guinea pig model. MntA expressed in trans allowed to restore, almost completely, the virulence of the DeltamntA B. anthracis strain. We propose that MntA is a novel B. anthracis virulence determinant essential for the development of anthrax disease, and that B. anthracisDeltamntA strains have the potential to serve as platform for future live attenuated vaccines.  相似文献

Syndiniales are a parasitic order within the eukaryotic lineage Dinophyceae (Alveolata). Here, we analysed the taxonomy of this group using 43655 18S rRNA gene sequences obtained either from environmental data sets or cultures, including 6874 environmental sequences from this study derived from Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. A total of 5571 out of the 43655 sequences analysed fell within the Dinophyceae. Both bayesian and maximum likelihood phylogenies placed Syndiniales in five main groups (I-V), as a monophyletic lineage at the base of 'core' dinoflagellates (all Dinophyceae except Syndiniales), although the latter placement was not bootstrap supported. Thus, the two uncultured novel marine alveolate groups I and II, which have been highlighted previously, are confirmed to belong to the Syndiniales. These groups were the most diverse and highly represented in environmental studies. Within each, 8 and 44 clades were identified respectively. Co-evolutionary trends between parasitic Syndiniales and their putative hosts were not clear, suggesting they may be relatively 'general' parasitoids. Based on the overall distribution patterns of the Syndiniales-affiliated sequences, we propose that Syndiniales are exclusively marine. Interestingly, sequences belonging to groups II, III and V were largely retrieved from the photic zone, while Group I dominated samples from anoxic and suboxic ecosystems. Nevertheless, both groups I and II contained specific clades preferentially, or exclusively, retrieved from these latter ecosystems. Given the broad distribution of Syndiniales, our work indicates that parasitism may be a major force in ocean food webs, a force that is neglected in current conceptualizations of the marine carbon cycle.  相似文献

海洋生态系统服务是人类从海洋生态系统中获得的效益,对沿海地区社会经济具有重要的支撑作用。采用国家标准《海洋生态资本评估技术导则》的方法,评估了江苏省管辖海域的生态系统服务价值,并揭示了其空间分布特征。江苏近海海域面积1.18万km2,2008年提供的生态系统服务总价值为426.02亿元,供给服务、文化服务、调节服务和支持服务价值分别为226.38亿元,186.61亿元,12.68亿元和0.34亿元;3个沿海地市比较,盐城近海生态系统服务价值最高,为184.55亿元;其次是连云港近海,为155.58亿元;南通近海最低,为85.89亿元。江苏近海生态系统服务价值空间分布密度平均为361.91万元/km2,从近岸到远海总体呈逐渐降低趋势,高值区主要分布在滨海旅游区和海洋保护区,中值区出现在养殖区,其它海域的服务价值则较低。江苏近海生态系统服务利用属于供给服务和文化服务共同主导的综合开发利用型,连云港近海属于文化服务主导的开发利用型,盐城近海属于供给服务和文化服务共同主导的综合开发利用型,南通近海则属于供给服务主导的开发利用型。建议在江苏近海开展离岸养殖工程,以提高近海供给服务价值;在盐城,特别是南通近岸海域开发海洋公园、渔家乐和其他亲水性旅游活动以提高文化服务价值。  相似文献

The deposition of nutrients N, P, Ca, Mg, Na and K from the atmosphere on a coastal maquis ecosystem was studied over a 12-month period (1981–1982). The annual precipitation during that period was 1065 mm. Nutrient input was estimated as 5.72, 0.24, 30.31, 3.40, 23.99 and 1616 kg ha–1 year–1 for N, P, Ca, Mg, Na and K, respectively. Chemical analysis of throughfall showed enrichment for all the nutrients studied. It was concluded that nutrient input from bulk precipitation is an important contribution to nutrient cycling of the Greek maquis ecosystem.  相似文献

The influence of parasites on host life histories and populations is pronounced. Among several diseases affecting animal populations throughout the world, sarcoptic mange has influenced many carnivore populations dramatically and during the latest epizootic in Fennoscandia reduced the abundance of red fox by over 70%. While the numerical responses of red fox populations, their prey and their competitors as well as clinical implications are well known, knowledge of how sarcoptic mange affects the structure of the dynamics of red fox populations is lacking. Integrating ecological theory and statistical modelling, we analysed the long-term dynamics (1955-1996) of 14 Danish red fox populations. As suggested by the model, invading sarcoptic mange significantly affected direct and delayed density dependence in red fox dynamics and concomitant shifts in fluctuation patterns were observed. Our statistical analyses also revealed that the spatial progressive spread of mange mites was mirrored in the autocovariate structures of red fox populations progressively exposed to sarcoptic mange.  相似文献

Previous studies revealed that Mn(II) is accumulated in cultured glial cells to concentrations far above those present in whole brain or in culture medium. The data indicated that Mn(II) moves across the plasma membrane into the cytoplasm by facilitated diffusion or counter-ion transport with Ca(II), then into mitochondria by active transport. The fact that 1–10 M Mn(II) ions activate brain glutamine synthetase makes important the regulation of Mn(II) transport in the CNS. Since Cu(II) and Zn(II) caused significant changes in the accumulation of Mn(II) by glia, the mechanisms by which these ions alter the uptake and efflux of Mn(II) ions has been investigated systematically under chemically defined conditions. The kinetics of [54MN]-Mn(II) uptake and efflux were determined and compared under four different sets of conditions: no adducts, Cu(II) or Zn(II) added externally, and with cells preloaded with Cu(II) or Zn(II) in the presence and absence of external added metal ions. Zn(II) ions inhibit the initial velocity of Mn(II) uptake, increase total Mn(II) accumulated, but do not alter the rate or extent Mn(II) efflux. Cu(II) ions increase both the initial velocity and the net Mn(II) accumulated by glia, with little effect on rate or extent of Mn(II) efflux. These results predict that increases in Cu(II) or Zn(II) levels may also increase the steady-state levels of Mn(II) in the cytoplasmic fraction of glial cells, which may in turn alter the activity of Mn(II)-sensitive enzymes in this cell compartment.  相似文献
