The relationship between taxonomic position and the lipid composition of octocorals from coastal waters of Vietnam was investigated. The principal component analysis of the total fatty acid (FA) composition of 64 coral specimens showed that total FAs are markers at the family level. A good distinction was obtained between antipatarians, gorgonians, and alcyonarians. Azooxanthellate corals of the genus Dendronephthya formed a separate group. The alcyonarian genera Sinularia, Lobophytum, and Sarcophyton were distinguished only by the composition of polyunsaturated FAs. The taxon-specific composition of FAs in octocorals is likely to be determined by differences in the nutrition of food sources, symbiont composition, and the enzymatic activity of FA biosynthesis.  相似文献

Fatty acid (FA) composition of nine organs from two closely related Antarctic fish species, Notothenia coriiceps and Notothenia rossii, was determined through gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. A data set for each species was obtained using major FA profiles from specimens caught in the sea waters of Admiralty Bay during the summer season. The FA profiles for both species are overall similar, but organ peculiarities have been found, which could reflect metabolic specificities and feeding habits between species. With the exception of liver, the most abundant FA in organs was the n?3 polyunsaturated FA. The total n?6 polyunsaturated FAs were minor components in all evaluated organs. Palmitic acid was identified as the major saturated FA, whereas oleic acid was the most represented of the monounsaturated FA in almost all assessed organs of both species. The n? 3/n? 6 ratios of all organs were higher than 3.5. Differences in individual FA and FA metabolic profiles of some organs observed between N. coriiceps and N. rossii suggest specific requirements in the mobilization, transport, incorporation, and/or catabolism of lipids that were reinforced by differences on some FA ratios expressing the activity coefficient of enzymes implicated on the FA pathway flux.  相似文献

The objectives of the present work were to investigate the temporal variation in the fatty acid (FA) composition of the octocoral Veretillum cynomorium, examine the effects of reproduction and environmental factors on FA variation, and establish a chemotaxonomic identification for this species. Mean oocyte size-frequency distributions showed that the majority of the oocytes had an intermediate size (Group II) before spawning (April and June). The late-vitellogenic oocytes (Group III) became absent in August and October and, during this post-spawning period, oocytes were primarily of small size (Group I). Most of the major FA, 16:0, 18:0, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, and the tetracosapolyenoic fatty acid (TPA), 24:6n-3, varied significantly throughout the year (p < 0.01), with two peaks in August/October and February. The boost in early oogenesis, also associated with warmer temperatures, seemed to be responsible for the observed increase in FA content between June and August. The highest values of FA content were observed in February when intermediate oogenesis (Group II) was at its peak and there were considerable levels of available food in the environment. Also, the increase in food availability seemed to trigger the final stages of gametogenesis. The high quantity of 18:1n-7, odd-numbered and branched FAs, suggested the presence of a dynamic bacterial community in V. cynomorium, probably as an adaptive response to the lack of symbiotic microalgae. Although the presence of TPAs is the main feature distinguishing octocorals from other coral species, here we showed that there was no single FA clearly dominating the FA composition of V. cynomorium throughout the year. Instead, four main FAs share similar concentrations: 16:0, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 24:6n-3. The predominance of these four FAs combined with the higher amount of 24:6n-3 when compared to 24:5n-6 may serve as a chemotaxonomic feature to distinguish this octocoral species (or genus).  相似文献

Marine pleustonic species such as the hydrozoans Velella velella and Physalia physalis, are known to drift in the world's oceans driven by winds, currents and tides. Here we present the first chemotaxonomic characterization, based on the fatty acid (FA) profile, of these two charismatic oceanic species that thrive in the interface layer between air and the water column in adult stages. Moreover, we compared their FA profiles with those from other representative cnidarian orders (Rhizostomeae, Anthomedusae, Siphonophorae, Alcyonacea, Scleractinia, Helioporacea and Pennatulacea). Velella velella and P. physalis mainly differed in the presence of symbiotic dinoflagellates markers (18:3n-6, 18:4n-3 and 20:5n-3 polyunsaturated FAs), present in higher percentage in the former, and bacterial markers (odd-numbered, branched and 18:1n-7 FAs), which were more representative in the latter. When comparing these species' FA profiles with the ones of other cnidarians orders, the presence/absence of endosymbionts and of specific FAs (tetracosapentaenoic and tetracosahexaenoic acids) as well as the latitudinal habitats were the main drivers for the distinction between groups.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to examine the fatty acid (FA) profile of two Artemia species, A. persimilis (Argentina) and A. franciscana (Great Salt Lake,Utah; USA) in coexistence at mesocosm scale. The experiment was carried out to 1) evaluate putative differences in the fatty acid composition of both species while they share resources and 2) to investigate the causes of such differences. Although the coexistence of these species in nature has not yet been observed, it remains possible that this situation may arise in the future mainly due to the invasive ability of A. franciscana. FA analyses were performed on individuals as well as on pooled biomasses of each species, and integrated in multivariate principal components analysis (PCA). Comparison of the relative abundance of FA between the two species revealed that interspecific differences in FA composition are greater than intraspecific variability. Higher percentages of unsaturation were found in the fatty acids of A. persimilis compared to A. franciscana, demonstrating that aside from a high phenotypic effect of diet on the FA composition of the animals, a species-specific genotypic effect should not be discarded.  相似文献

Background

In order to understand feeding ecology and habitat use of coral reef fish, fatty acid composition was examined in five coral reef fishes, Thalassoma lunare, Lutjanus lutjanus, Abudefduf bengalensis, Scarus rivulatus and Scolopsis affinis collected in the Bidong Island of Malaysian South China Sea.

Results

Proportions of saturated fatty acids (SAFA) ranged 57.2% 74.2%, with the highest proportions in fatty acids, the second highest was monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) ranged from 21.4% to 39.0% and the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was the lowest ranged from 2.8% to 14.1%. Each fatty acid composition differed among fishes, suggesting diverse feeding ecology, habitat use and migration during the fishes’ life history in the coral reef habitats.

Conclusions

Diets of the coral fish species might vary among species in spite of that each species are living sympatrically. Differences in fatty acid profiles might not just be considered with respect to the diets, but might be based on the habitat and migration.  相似文献

The transfer of fatty acid (FA) biomarkers was assessed by an experimental food chain comprising three trophic levels: leaves of the mangrove Avicennia marina, the grapsid crab Parasesarma erythodactyla, and the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus. FA compositions for each trophic level were investigated through a feeding/starving regime designed to reveal the transfer of FAs along the food chain. Comparison of the FA profiles of the mangrove leaves, the tissues and faecal material of P. erythodactyla suggests that the crab, contrary to previous studies, lacks the necessary enzymes to incorporate some FAs in its diet. Long chain FAs were egested while polyunsaturated acids seemed to be efficiently assimilated. The polyunsaturated FAs 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3 were identified as useful biomarkers of the mangrove leaves for tracing their transfer to the higher trophic levels. The contribution of these markers to the FA profiles of the crabs was investigated and it was found that both 18:2ω6 and 18:3ω3 could be successfully traced across the first trophic transfer. However, only 18:3ω3 demonstrated a clear second transfer into the tissues of P. pelagicus. Multivariate analysis of the FA profiles of the study organisms was found to be a potentially useful tool for demonstrating differences in diet within a species and also what FAs, and therefore dietary items, are responsible for those differences. MDS analysis of the FA profiles of faecal material from P. erythodactyla showed that this species provides an important ecological link in estuarine systems by providing a substrate for the colonisation of bacteria.  相似文献

Cellular fatty acid (FA) composition was utilized as a taxonomic tool to discriminate between different Aspergillus species. Several of the tested species had the same FA composition and different relative FA concentrations. The most important FAs were palmitic acid (C16:0), estearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2), which represented 95% of Aspergillus FAs. Multivariate data analysis demonstrated that FA analysis is a useful tool for differentiating species belonging to genus Aspergillus. All the species analyzed showed significantly FA acid profiles (p < 0.001). Furthermore, it will be possible to distinguish among Aspergillus spp. in the Flavi Section. FA composition can serve as a useful tool for the identification of filamentous fungi.  相似文献

The intra-and interspecific variability of fatty acid (FA) composition of soft corals was examined in the tropical alcyonarian Sarcophyton sp., tropical gorgonian Euplexaura erecta, and boreal alcyonarian Gersemia rubiformis. Characteristic significant differences in the FA composition were found between these species belonging to different taxonomic groups and habitats. We assume that the FA groups 14: 0 + 16: 0 + 18: 3n-6, 16: 2 + 20: 4n-6 + 24: 5n-6, and 18: 1n-7 + 20: 1n-7 + 20: 5n-3 + 24: 6n-3 are characteristic of Sarcophyton sp., E. erecta, and G. rubiformis respectively. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between the three soft coral species in the content of oleic, linoleic, and docosahexaenoic acids. The relative content of more than 45% of individual FA did not significantly differ (p > 0.05) between the pairs of species, i.e., intraspecific variations exceeded interspecific ones. The reasons for intraspecific variability of soft coral FA composition are discussed. Control of this variability is needed when using individual FA as chemotaxonomic and food markers.  相似文献

Adductor muscle fatty acid (FA) composition was compared in Pecten maximus juveniles originating from five locations along the Norwegian coast from 59°N to 65°N to detect possible population differences. Broodstock sized scallops were translocated to sea conditions by a scallop hatchery near Bergen (60°N) before spawning in February 2006. The scallop larvae and juveniles were reared in the same environment for two years and 10 individuals from each population were sampled in May 2007 and in May 2008 for analysis of the FAs in the adductor muscle. The total lipid content determined as total amount of FAs were 5.7 ± 0.3 mg per g tissue, and no significant difference was found among the five populations. The polyunsaturated FAs made up close to 60% of the total, with 20:5n3 and 22:6n3 dominating. The saturated FA content was approximately 30%, while the monounsaturated FA were less abundant (7–10%). The FA composition of the muscles of the five populations was similar within each year, with larger differences between the years. Multivariate, supervised learning method PLS, applied pairwise, showed distinct FA composition, between the scallops from the five locations, indicating population differences. The relatedness between the populations was different in the two years, but the distinct FA profiles of the adductor muscle could be used to distinguish between scallop populations on a local scale. The results indicate habitat-specific lipid metabolism which may have important implications for the scallop aquaculture industry in the context of producing well adapted individuals for the specific locations.  相似文献

The three-dimensional structure of habitats is a critical component of species' niches driving coexistence in species-rich ecosystems. However, its influence on structuring and partitioning recruitment niches has not been widely addressed. We developed a new method to combine species distribution modelling and structure from motion, and characterized three-dimensional recruitment niches of two ecosystem engineers on Caribbean coral reefs, scleractinian corals and gorgonians. Fine-scale roughness was the most important predictor of suitable habitat for both taxa, and their niches largely overlapped, primarily due to scleractinians' broader niche breadth. Crevices and holes at mm scales on calcareous rock with low coral cover were more suitable for octocorals than for scleractinian recruits, suggesting that the decline in scleractinian corals is facilitating the recruitment of octocorals on contemporary Caribbean reefs. However, the relative abundances of the taxa were independent of the amount of suitable habitat on the reef, emphasizing that niche processes alone do not predict recruitment rates.  相似文献

Quality of pork depends on genotype, rearing and pre- and post-slaughter conditions. However, no information is available on rearing system changes and oleic acid supplementation on carcass characteristics and fatty acid (FA) profile of pork from the Alentejano (AL) pig, an obese breed. This study evaluates the effects of feeding low (LO) or high oleic acid diets (HO) to AL pigs reared in individual pens (IND) or outdoor (OUT) with access to pasture. Carcass composition was obtained and longissimus dorsi and semimembranosus samples were collected to analyse chemical composition and neutral and polar intramuscular lipids FA profile by gas chromatography. Statistical analysis was performed by a two-way ANOVA for rearing system and diet effects. OUT-reared pigs presented leaner carcasses than IND-reared ones. Both muscles presented lower intramuscular lipid content in OUT-reared pigs. Treatments affected the FA profile of muscles. Overall, OUT-reared pigs presented lower n-6/n-3 FA ratios, whereas pigs fed the HO diet exhibited lower saturated fatty acids (SFA), higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) levels and lower thrombogenic indexes on neutral intramuscular lipids than LO-fed pigs. On the polar fraction, OUT-reared pigs presented lower SAT and n-6/n-3 FA ratio, and higher polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) levels on both muscles. Pigs fed the HO diet exhibited higher MUFA and lower PUFA levels on both muscles, and lower SAT levels on semimembranosus. This study shows rearing system and oleic acid supplementation have complementary effects and influence carcass composition and the nutritional quality of meat.  相似文献

A detailed analysis of fatty acid (FA) profiles and their properties relating to fuelling strategy can improve understanding of avian migration. The study aimed to understand whether and how FA composition differs among several passerine species which migrate using different fuelling strategies (constant fuelling, gradual fuelling, early fuelling or late fuelling). We found evidence for differential FA composition among migratory species according to their fuelling strategies: early fuellers presented higher n-3 polyunsaturated FA and gradual fuellers higher mono-unsaturated FA, which can be directly related to their differential migratory strategies to maximize energy use.  相似文献

Wax esters, which are esters of fatty alcohols and fatty acids (FAs), are one of the main classes of reserve lipids in all coral species. The chemical structures and the content of wax ester molecular species were determined for the first time in nine coral species from three taxonomic groups: symbiotic reef-building corals, (Hexacorallia subclasses), symbiotic soft coral alcyonarians, and asymbiotic soft coral gorgonians (Octocorallia subclasses) collected in the South China Sea (Vietnam). Our comparison of these groups showed that the absence of symbiotic microalgae (zooxanthellae) and the exoskeleton affects the profile of molecular species of wax esters considerably. The main components of wax esters of all corals were cetyl palmitate (16:0-16:0) and other saturated wax esters containing 30, 34, and 36 carbon atoms. The content of unsaturated molecular species 6:0–16:1, 16:0–18:1, and 16:0–20:1 in wax esters of symbiotic soft corals (alcyonarians) was greater than that in wax esters of reef-building corals. In contrast to symbiotic coral species, wax esters of asymbiotic soft corals, namely azooxanthellate gorgonians, contained a considerable amount of long-chain molecular species (C37-C41) with an odd number of carbon atoms. The presence of such molecular species indicates that asymbiotic gorgonians may use bacterial FAs in biosynthesis of their own wax esters. This observation confirms our hypothesis that bacterial community is important for maintaining the energy balance of azooxanthellate corals.  相似文献

This study compared the fatty acid composition of polar bear (Ursus maritimus) adipose tissue (n=2) to the fatty acid (FA) composition in published literature for maternal milk (n=3 samples) and a primary milk formula (liquid Esbilac, Pet Ag Inc., Hampshire, IL) commonly used in hand rearing, to look at possible dietary influences on ultimate body fat constituency. All tissue and commercial milk fatty acids were analyzed on a percent relative (% of fat) basis for consistency in reporting results and to make easier comparisons between samples with varying fat contents. Thirty‐eight individual fatty acid profiles were measured and the results tabulated into saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The tissue adipose results for the two cubs had similar patterns throughout the assay. Saturated FA totals were 30% of the total fat, monounsaturated FA represented 50% of the total fat, and polyunsaturated FA was 15%. Similar fatty acid proportions were reported when comparing adipose to published data for maternal milk of polar bears. The most striking differences were between the commercial milk replacer (liquid Esbilac) and the tissue samples and maternal milk values. Esbilac FA summaries for saturated FAs were 24%, monounsaturated were 26%, and polyunsaturated comprised 50% of the total fat. Polyunsaturated fat in Esbilac is substantially higher than the tissue and milk scores. Although lipid sources from whole cream or half‐and‐half are used to increase the fat concentration of milk replacers for the hand‐reared polar bear cub, alternative ingredients such as fish oil may prove more suitable for this species, as their FA profiles better duplicate natural diets and resulting lipid stores in milk and adipose tissues of free‐ranging polar bears. Information about lipid content and fatty acid (FA) composition of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatos) edible tissues is very limited in comparison to other meat sources. Thus, this work aims to present the first in-depth characterization of the FA profile of meat, subcutaneous adipose tissue and liver of muskoxen living in West Greenland. Furthermore, we aim to evaluate the effect of sex in the FA composition of these edible tissues. Samples from muscle (Longissimus dorsi), subcutaneous adipose tissue and liver were collected from female and male muskoxen, which were delivered at the butchery in Kangerlussuaq (West Greenland) during the winter hunting season. The lipid content of muscle, adipose tissue and liver averaged 284, 846 and 173 mg/g of dry tissue, respectively. This large lipid contents confirms that in late winter, when forage availability is scarce, muskoxen from West Greenland still have high fat reserves, demonstrating that they are well adapted to seasonal feed restriction. A detailed characterization of FA and dimethylacetal composition of muskoxen muscle, subcutaneous adipose tissue and liver showed that there are little differences on FA composition between sexes. Nevertheless, the 18:1cis-9 was the most abundant FA in muscle and adipose tissue, reaching 43% of total FA in muscle. The high content of 18:1cis-9 suggests that it can be selectively stored in muskoxen tissues. Regarding the nutritional composition of muskoxen edible tissues, they are not a good source of polyunsaturated FA; however, they may contribute to a higher fat intake. Information about the FA composition of muskoxen meat and liver is scarce, so this work can contribute to the characterization of the nutritional fat properties of muskoxen edible tissues and can be also useful to update food composition databases.  相似文献

Steers were fed 70∶30 forage∶concentrate diets for 205 days, with either grass hay (GH) or red clover silage (RC), and either sunflower-seed (SS) or flaxseed (FS), providing 5.4% oil in the diets. Compared to diets containing SS, FS diets had elevated (P<0.05) subcutaneous trans (t)-18:1 isomers, conjugated linoleic acids and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Forage and oilseed type influenced total n-3 PUFA, especially α-linolenic acid (ALA) and total non-conjugated diene biohydrogenation (BH) in subcutaneous fat with proportions being greater (P<0.05) for FS or GH as compared to SS or RC. Of the 25 bacterial genera impacted by diet, 19 correlated with fatty acids (FA) profile. Clostridium were most abundant when levels of conjugated linolenic acids, and n-3 PUFA''s were found to be the lowest in subcutaneous fat, suggestive of their role in BH. Anerophaga, Fibrobacter, Guggenheimella, Paludibacter and Pseudozobellia were more abundant in the rumen when the levels of VA in subcutaneous fat were low. This study clearly shows the impact of oilseeds and forage source on the deposition of subcutaneous FA in beef cattle. Significant correlations between rumen bacterial genera and the levels of specific FA in subcutaneous fat maybe indicative of their role in determining the FA profile of adipose tissue. However, despite numerous correlations, the dynamics of rumen bacteria in the BH of unsaturated fatty acid and synthesis of PUFA and FA tissue profiles require further experimentation to determine if these correlations are consistent over a range of diets of differing composition. Present results demonstrate that in order to achieve targeted FA profiles in beef, a multifactorial approach will be required that takes into consideration not only the PUFA profile of the diet, but also the non-oil fraction of the diet, type and level of feed processing, and the role of rumen microbes in the BH of unsaturated fatty acid.  相似文献

To explore how microbial community composition and function varies within a coral reef ecosystem, we performed metagenomic sequencing of seawater from four niches across Heron Island Reef, within the Great Barrier Reef. Metagenomes were sequenced from seawater samples associated with (1) the surface of the coral species Acropora palifera, (2) the surface of the coral species Acropora aspera, (3) the sandy substrate within the reef lagoon and (4) open water, outside of the reef crest. Microbial composition and metabolic function differed substantially between the four niches. The taxonomic profile showed a clear shift from an oligotroph-dominated community (e.g. SAR11, Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus) in the open water and sandy substrate niches, to a community characterised by an increased frequency of copiotrophic bacteria (e.g. Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Alteromonas) in the coral seawater niches. The metabolic potential of the four microbial assemblages also displayed significant differences, with the open water and sandy substrate niches dominated by genes associated with core house-keeping processes such as amino acid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism as well as DNA and RNA synthesis and metabolism. In contrast, the coral surface seawater metagenomes had an enhanced frequency of genes associated with dynamic processes including motility and chemotaxis, regulation and cell signalling. These findings demonstrate that the composition and function of microbial communities are highly variable between niches within coral reef ecosystems and that coral reefs host heterogeneous microbial communities that are likely shaped by habitat structure, presence of animal hosts and local biogeochemical conditions.  相似文献

Year-round fluctuation in environmental conditions have a considerable influence on the level of biomarkers, that are usually applied for monitoring marine invertebrates. To date, no data on annual cycles of fatty acid (FA) biomarkers in tropical soft corals are available. The FA composition of the alcyonarian Sinularia flexibilis containing symbiotic microalgae was studied during a year. Two major FAs, 20:4n-6 and 16:0, determined the level of polyunsaturated and saturated FAs (PUFAs and SFAs). The insignificant variations in PUFA content indicated a relatively stable level of phospholipids that formed the structural base of coral cell biomembranes. No clear relationship between the PUFA markers of photosynthetic symbionts and the solar radiation was found. The three-fold increase in the SFA level in the summer correlated with the water temperature and indicated a rise in the level of neutral lipids that made up the energy reserve of corals. The seasonal changes in FA biosynthesis, membrane fluidity, and coral nutrition are discussed.  相似文献

Factors regulating fatty acid (FA) composition of small herbivores are poorly known. Because of the fast response to food deprivation, the tissue FA profiles of voles could be rapidly modified. The selectivity of incorporating dietary FA into tissue total lipids and mobilizing tissue FA was examined in two Microtus vole species either fed or fasted for 12-18 h. The FA composition of the tissues reflected the dietary lipids, but FA were selectively incorporated depending on their structure. The FA profiles of white and brown adipose tissues were different and contained more saturated and monounsaturated FA and less polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) than the diet. The essential PUFA precursors with smaller tissue percentages were likely converted into longer-chain derivatives for structural lipids. The FA composition of the vole tissues was selectively modified by food deprivation. The preferences for retention or loss were tissue-specific and related to the FA structure. Livers displayed steatosis with characteristic accumulation of triacylglycerols, while FA prevalent in membrane phospholipids decreased in proportion. Hepatic FA could be partly derived from lipids hydrolyzed in fat depots. The FA profiles of the vole tissues reflect the dietary lipids and are rapidly and selectively modified by food deprivation.  相似文献
