This study investigated what information about brain death was available from Google searches for five major religions. A substantial body of supporting research examining online behaviors shows that information seekers use Google as their preferred search engine and usually limit their search to entries on the first page. For each of the five religions in this study, Google listings reveal ethical controversy about organ donation in the context of brain death. These results suggest that family members who go online to find information about organ donation in the context of brain death would find information about ethical controversy in the first page of Google listings. Organ procurement agencies claim that all major world religions approve of organ donation and do not address the ethical controversy about organ donation in the context of brain death that is readily available online. 相似文献

This study assessed the implication of oxidative stress in the mortality of cells of Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz. Cultures grown at 25°C were exposed to 32°C, darkness, and hydrogen peroxide (0.5 mM) for 96 h. The cellular abundance, chl a concentration and content, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm ratio), intracellular oxidative stress (determined with dihydrorhodamine 123 [DHR]), cell mortality (revealed by SYTOX‐labeling of DNA), and activation of caspase 3–like proteins were assessed every 24 h. The presence of DNA degradation in cells of M. aeruginosa was also assessed using a terminal deoxynucletidyl transferase‐mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay at 96 h. Transferring cultures from 25°C to 32°C was generally beneficial to the cells. The cellular abundance and chl a concentration increased, and the mortality remained low (except for a transient burst at 72 h) as did the oxidative stress. In darkness, cells did not divide, and the Fv/Fm continuously decreased with time. The slow increase in intracellular oxidative stress coincided with the activation of caspase 3–like proteins and a 15% and 17% increase in mortality and TUNEL‐positive cells, respectively. Exposure to hydrogen peroxide had the most detrimental effect on cells as growth ceased and the Fv/Fm declined to near zero in less than 24 h. The 2‐fold increase in oxidative stress matched the activation of caspase 3–like proteins and a 40% and 37% increase in mortality and TUNEL‐positive cells, respectively. These results demonstrate the implication of oxidative stress in the stress response and mortality of M. aeruginosa. 相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation effects were examined in natural phytoplankton communities from Rimouski (Canada), Ubatuba (Brazil), and Ushuaia (Argentina). Outdoor pump‐mixed mesocosms were submitted to ambient solar radiation (NUVB) and ambient with additional UV‐B radiation (UVBR) from lamps (HUVB), corresponding to a local 60% ozone depletion scenario. At all sites, neither algal biomass nor dark‐adapted Fv/Fm were significantly affected by additional UVBR, suggesting the presence of active UV protection or repair mechanisms. To examine the role of D1 protein turnover, essential for PSII repair, short‐term surface incubations were performed in the presence or absence of lincomycin, a chloroplast protein synthesis inhibitor. Effects on PSII were determined using chl a in vivo fluorescence, whereas the D1 protein was detected immunochemically. In the absence of D1 repair, D1 pools and Fv/Fm decreased to a similar extent under both light treatments. In the presence of D1 repair, D1 pools suffered faster net degradation under HUVB compared with NUVB, whereas Fv/Fm was maintained for both light treatments, suggesting that HUVB exposure in field populations had more effect on D1 synthesis and PSII repair than on D1 degradation. The fewer undamaged reaction centers remaining in phytoplankton under HUVB were able to maintain Fv/Fm or actually recovered during the dark acclimation before Fv/Fm measurements. The D1 pools suffered faster net degradation at the tropical site where high irradiance drove faster D1 degradation and high water temperature enabled fast enzymatic activities. This study shows the crucial role of dynamic changes in D1 turnover in the photobiology of natural planktonic communities across a range of latitudes. 相似文献
