In a search for sandfly breeding sites in the Cévennes, France, six larvae of Phlebotomus ariasi were found in rotted manure in a cellar housing goats, and six adult flies of the same species were collected from emergence traps, one in the same cellar and five on a disused refuse dump. No sandflies were found emerging from holes of long-tailed field mice (Apodemus spp.) and no sandfly larvae were extracted from 77 kg (dry weight) and 130 kg (undried weight) of samples of soil or litter from different places. Total catches and the proportions of male flies in CDC miniature light traps were much higher in peridomestic than silvatic stations. About 15% of males caught in 3 peridomestic stations had unrotated genitalia. It is concluded that the larval breeding sites of P. ariasi are probably peridomestic and have a high content of organic matter. Observations on colonized P. ariasi show that, although immature stages of this fly need moisture, their requirements are comparatively low. It is suggested that female P. ariasi choose oviposition sites by sensing the presence of immature stages already in an optimal place.  相似文献

Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir sandflies were caught in light traps hung in oak trees and in a house in the Cévennes focus of leishmaniasis in the South of France. The flies were cryopreserved either immediately on removal from the traps, or after starvation for 6-7 days, or after 6-7 days starvation followed by exposure to oak infested with the aphid genera Lachnus or Thelaxes. After transportation to the laboratory, the sandflies were thawed and aqueous extracts of the crushed flies were analysed for their carbohydrate content using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC). Starved female sandflies lacked significant amounts of any saccharides. Four types of sugar, melezitose and its hydrolysis products turanose, glucose and fructose, were observed in flies which had been starved previously and then placed with Lachnus infested oak. The results also indicate the presence of hydrolysis products of melezitose: (a) in flies previously starved and placed with Thelaxes infested oak, (b) in P.ariasi cryopreserved direct from the light traps hung in oak trees infested with Lachnus and Thelaxes, and (c) flies caught in a house. Unidentifiably small quantities of a trisaccharide were also detected in the latter groups of flies. In previous tests, sugars were detected in P.ariasi after their exposure to aphid-infested oak (Quercus ilex L.), but not when P.ariasi females were exposed to washed oak leaves without aphids. The results indicate that P.ariasi feed on melezitose and/or turanose, the main local source of which is aphid honeydew. A better understanding of sugar meal sources of sandflies using HPLC and GC techniques will assist in our understanding of sandfly/Leishmania relationships, parasite transmission and epidemiology.  相似文献

The study of Plaissan rodent fauna and the discoveryof a new fossiliferous locality, 〈Nouvelle Faculté Médecine〉, allow us to contribute to a more accurate biochronological mammalian scale, for the Bas-Languedoc Lower Miocene. Nouvelle Faculté Médecine, contemporaneous of La Paillade or slighthy older has a Aquitanian age; Plaissan, equivalent to Paulhiac, ist older than the oldest known interbedded marine level in the Languedocian marine Aquitanian (Les Cévennes); it should be contemporaneous with the ante-stratotypic Aquitanian of Carry-le-Rouet.  相似文献

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) (Newstead, 1911) are blood‐feeding insects that transmit human pathogens including Leishmania (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) parasites, causative agents of the leishmaniases. To elucidate Leishmania transmission cycles, conclusive identification of vector species is essential. Molecular approaches including matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS) protein profiling have recently emerged to complement morphological identification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the trap type used to collect sandflies, specifically Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light or sticky traps, the two most commonly used in sandfly surveys, on subsequent MALDI‐TOF MS protein profiling. Specimens of five species (Phlebotomus ariasi, Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus perniciosus, Phlebotomus sergenti, Sergentomyia minuta) collected in periurban and agricultural habitats in southeast Spain were subjected to protein profiling. Acquired protein spectra were queried against an in‐house reference database and their quality assessed to evaluate the trap type effect. The results indicate that trap choice can substantially affect the quality of protein spectra in collected sandflies. Whereas specimens retrieved from light traps produced intense and reproducible spectra that allowed reliable species determination, profiles of specimens from sticky traps were compromised and often did not enable correct identification. Sticky traps should therefore not be used in surveys that deploy MALDI‐TOF MS protein profiling for species identification.  相似文献

The concepts of longevity (longest lived) and life expectancy (typical age at death) are common demographic parameters that provide insight into a population. Defined as the longest lived individual, longevity is easily calculated but is not representative, as only one individual will live to this extreme. Longevity records for North American Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and African elephants (Loxodonta africana) have not yet been set, as the oldest individuals (77 and 53 years, respectively) are still alive. One Asian elephant lived to 86 years in the Taipei Zoo. This is comparable to the maximum (though not typical) longevity estimated in wild populations. Calculation of life expectancy, however, must use statistics that are appropriate for the data available, the distribution of the data, and the species' biology. Using a simple arithmetic mean to describe the non‐normally distributed age at death for elephant populations underestimates life expectancy. Use of life‐table analysis to estimate median survivorship or survival analysis to estimate average survivorship are more appropriate for the species' biology and the data available, and provide more accurate estimates. Using a life‐table, the median life expectancy for female Asian elephants (Lx=0.50) is 35.9 years in North America and 41.9 years in Europe. Survival analysis estimates of average life expectancy for Asian elephants are 47.6 years in Europe and 44.8 years in North America. Survival analysis estimates for African elephants are less robust due to less data. Currently the African elephant average life expectancy estimate in North America is 33.0 years, but this is likely to increase with more data, as it has over the past 10 years. Two distinct populations of Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir have been identified in the Cévennes focus of leishmaniasis in the south of France using gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) of cuticular hydrocarbons extracted from individual dried female flies. Results were obtained after analysis of flies collected from CDC light traps from a domestic and a sylvatic site separated by a distance of 900 m. Flies were provided for GLC analysis as six blind samples. Using cluster and discriminant analysis techniques, five of the samples were shown to form two distinct groups, while a sixth was identified as a mixture. These findings were subsequently confirmed to correspond exactly with the way the samples had been presented. Samples grouped together on the basis of the flies' cuticular hydrocarbon profiles had been taken from the same site, while the ungrouped sample had been deliberately mixed. Using a jack-knifed estimator, it is shown that specimens can be correctly allocated to the population to which they belong with a 92% success rate. These results confirm the value of the technique for the identification of populations of medical vectors. The implication of the findings for the epidemiology of leishmaniasis is discussed with special reference to the need to determine if both populations are vectors and to study differences in behaviour. In addition to adults, profiles of larval sandflies have been obtained for the first time.  相似文献

Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis represents a public health problem in many areas of Mexico, especially in the Yucatan Peninsula. An understanding of vector ecology and bionomics is of great importance in evaluations of the transmission dynamics of Leishmania parasites. A field study was conducted in the county of Calakmul, state of Campeche, during the period from November 2006 to March 2007. Phlebotomine sandfly vectors were sampled using Centers for Disease Control light traps, baited Disney traps and Shannon traps. A total of 3374 specimens were captured in the two villages of Once de Mayo (93.8%) and Arroyo Negro (6.1%). In Once de Mayo, the most abundant species were Psathyromyia shannoni, Lutzomyia cruciata, Bichromomyia olmeca olmeca and Psychodopygus panamensis (all: Diptera: Psychodidae). The Shannon trap was by far the most efficient method of collection. The infection rate, as determined by Leishmania mexicana‐specific polymerase chain reaction, was 0.3% in Once de Mayo and infected sandflies included Psy. panamensis, B. o. olmeca and Psa. shannoni. There were significant differences in human biting rates across sandfly species and month of sampling. Ecological niche modelling analyses showed an overall overlap of 39.1% for the four species in the whole state of Campeche. In addition, the finding of nine vector–reservoir pairs indicates a potential interaction. The roles of the various sandfly vectors in Calakmul are discussed.  相似文献

Over many centuries, chestnut fruits had an important role as food, while chestnut wood was used for local purposes. Today sweet chestnut stands are very common around the western Mediterranean Basin, and it is necessary to analyze the dynamic of plant species diversity in different chestnut stand types (groves and coppices) to guide management strategies that will allow the conservation of biodiversity. Our objective was to analyze consequences on plant species diversity of various management strategies in chestnut stands of three Mediterranean areas, Salamanca (Spain), the Cévennes (France), and Etna volcano (Italy). We found that plant species diversity is different according to management types; it is higher in groves than in coppice stands. We also demonstrated that Castanea sativa cultivated groves were characterized by small heliophillous therophytes. C. sativa abandoned groves, mixed C. sativa–Quercus pyrenaica coppice stands, Q. pyrenaica coppice stands, and young C. sativa coppice stands were characterized by hemicryptophytes with anemochorous dispersal mode and chamaephytes. Medium and old C. sativa coppice stands (that differ by the shoot age) were characterized by phanerophytes with zoochorous dispersal mode. Human perturbations maintain a quite high level of species diversity. In contrast, the abandonment of chestnut stands leads to homogeneous vegetation with decreasing diversity. One solution could be to maintain a landscape mosaic constituted of diverse chestnut stands modified by human activities (groves, cultivated or abandoned, and coppice stands). This could enhance regional plant diversity.  相似文献

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis is a common vector-borne systemic disease caused by Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). In Morocco the situation is complex: many sandfly species have been collected in areas in which the disease is endemic, but only Phlebotomus ariasi, Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus longicuspis (Diptera: Psychodidae) have been confirmed to have vectorial roles. The objective of the present study was to ascertain the potential distribution of L. infantum and its vectors in Morocco, using ecological niche modelling. Vector records were obtained from field collections of the Laboratory team and from previously published entomological observations. Epidemiological data for L. infantum modelling were obtained from Moroccan Ministry of Health reports. The jackknife test indicated that the bioclimatic variables with the greatest influence on model development for all species were annual precipitation and precipitation in the driest quarter of the year. MaxEnt model representations for sandfly species that act as vectors of L. infantum showed the widespread geographic distribution of these species in Morocco, specifically in northern and central Morocco, where foci of visceral leishmaniasis are found. The ecological niche modelling points out areas in which the probability of occurrence of these species is higher. This information should be considered as a starting point for further research to fully elucidate the ecology and epidemiology of these species, as well as of the pathogens they transmit.  相似文献

Background

The Indigenous population of Australia suffers considerable disadvantage across a wide range of socio-economic indicators, and is therefore the focus of many policy initiatives attempting to ‘close the gap’ between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Unfortunately, past population estimates have proved unreliable as denominators for these indicators. The aim of the paper is to contribute more robust estimates for the Northern Territory Indigenous population for the period 1966–2011, and hence estimate one of the most important of socio-economic indicators, life expectancy at birth.

Method

A consistent time series of population estimates from 1966 to 2011, based off the more reliable 2011 official population estimates, was created by a mix of reverse and forward cohort survival. Adjustments were made to ensure sensible sex ratios and consistency with recent birth registrations. Standard life table methods were employed to estimate life expectancy. Drawing on an approach from probabilistic forecasting, confidence intervals surrounding population numbers and life expectancies were estimated.

Results

The Northern Territory Indigenous population in 1966 numbered between 23,800 and 26,100, compared to between 66,100 and 73,200 in 2011. In 1966–71 Indigenous life expectancy at birth lay between 49.1 and 56.9 years for males and between 49.7 and 57.9 years for females, whilst by 2006–11 it had increased to between 60.5 and 66.2 years for males and between 65.4 and 70.8 for females. Over the last 40 years the gap with all-Australian life expectancy has not narrowed, fluctuating at about 17 years for both males and females. Whilst considerable progress has been made in closing the gap in under-five mortality, at most other ages the mortality rate differential has increased.

Conclusions

A huge public health challenge remains. Efforts need to be redoubled to reduce the large gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.  相似文献

Improvements in life expectancy have been considerable over the past hundred years. Forecasters have taken to applying historical trends under an assumption of continuing improvements in life expectancy in the future. A linear mixed effects model was used to estimate the trends in global and regional rates of improvements in life expectancy, child, adult, and senior survival, in 166 countries between 1950 and 2010. Global improvements in life expectancy, including both child and adult survival rates, decelerated significantly over the study period. Overall life expectancy gains were estimated to have declined from 5.9 to 4.0 months per year for a mean deceleration of -0.07 months/year2; annual child survival gains declined from 4.4 to 1.6 deaths averted per 1000 for a mean deceleration of -0.06 deaths/1000/year2; adult survival gains were estimated to decline from 4.8 to 3.7 deaths averted per 1000 per year for a mean deceleration of -0.08 deaths/1000/year2. Senior survival gains however increased from 2.4 to 4.2 deaths averted per 1000 per year for an acceleration of 0.03 deaths/1000/year2. Regional variation in the four measures was substantial. The rates of global improvements in life expectancy, child survival, and adult survival have declined since 1950 despite an increase in the rate of improvements among seniors. We postulate that low-cost innovation, related to the last half-century progress in health–primarily devoted to children and middle age, is reaping diminishing returns on its investments. Trends are uneven across regions and measures, which may be due in part to the state of epidemiological transition between countries and regions and disparities in the diffusion of innovation, accessible only in high-income countries where life expectancy is already highest.  相似文献

The desiccation of the Mediterranean Basin at the end of the Miocene was a milestone in the evolution of the Mediterranean sandfly fauna. This severe environmental change should have notably influenced their paleobiogeography as well as paleoecology and might have triggered the rapid speciation of the ancestors of the extant European sandfly species. The aim of this study was to explore how the Messinian Salinity Crisis could influence the distribution and migration routes of the ancient Mediterranean sandfly species. The unknown ecological requirements of this ancient species were replaced by the distribution-limiting climatic values of three species of extant European phlebotomine sandflies which represent the three ecological types of European sandfly fauna. The former potential occurrence patterns were determined by Climate Envelope Modelling Method. As a climate model for the Messinian Period in the Mediterranean Basin, the modified mid-Pliocene warm period model was used. The thermal surplus of the desiccated seafloor was reconstructed based on the atmospheric lapse rate. It was found that the extraordinary hot climate of the Mediterranean abyssal plain did not allow the direct cross-migration of the ancient sandfly species anywhere between Europe and North Africa neither through Gibraltar nor the Strait of Sicily. While Phlebotomus neglectus and Phlebotomus papatasi could colonize the Adriatic Plain, Phlebotomus ariasi could not. The results indicate that the Messinian played an important role in the speciation rather than migration of the ancestors of present-day Mediterranean sandflies.  相似文献

We developed a capture-mark-recapture protocol for measuring the population density (D) of ship rats (Rattus rattus) in forest. Either mesh cage traps or Elliott box traps were set at each of six sites (48 traps per site for 5 nights) in the Orongorongo Valley on two occasions in autumn 2003. Cage traps only were set at three sites in autumn 2004. Rats were caught much more readily in cage traps than in Elliott traps and none were recaptured in Elliott traps. Additional food, bedding and trap covers reduced mortality and interference with traps. To estimate density we fitted a spatial detection model; this method avoids the need to estimate effective trapping area. Estimates were based on both a model assuming equal capture probability (Dˆ0) and a model incorporating temporal and individual variation (Dˆth). Our target for precision was CV(Dˆ) ≤ 20%, but when data were pooled from multiple sites with cage traps, CV(Dˆth) was ~30%. Estimated density of rats (Dˆth) was 5 ha-1in 2003 and 9 ha-1 in 2004; these estimates did not differ significantly. The overall capture index in 2004 was 3 rats per 00 corrected trap-nights on snap-trap lines set after live trapping. House mice were caught in both types of live trap, but at rates high enough for density estimation only where Elliott traps were used. Field estimates of detection functions for rats captured with cage traps allowed us to simulate the performance of alternative trapping systems. We predict that a 64-trap layout at three sites with five trapping occasions would yield acceptable precision of Dˆth (20–23%) at the observed rat densities. Our use of Dˆth was conservative; slightly higher precision may be achieved by assuming constant trappability ( Dˆ0), and future work may justify this assumption.  相似文献

Traditional paleodemographic methods of estimating mortality have been based on unrealistic assumptions about the prevalence of closed and stationary populations. When a living closed population was growing, the mean age at death of its skeletal survivors will be shifted below its true life expectancy. For declining populations, the mean age at death will be higher than true underlying life expectancy at birth. The faster the rate of growth, the larger and more curvilinear is the displacement. Mortality estimates can only be extracted from skeletal populations via an independent estimate of the growth rate. Fertility levels, however, can be estimated directly. The empirical importance of growth rate-dependent mortality estimates is demonstrated by reinterpreting mean-age-at-death data from several populations before and after the agricultural revolution; with detailed consideration given to the Old World populations of Acsadi and Nemeskeri and a New World population from central Illinois.  相似文献

Abstract. During three field surveys of phlebotomine sandflies in the region of Sessa, Minor Malcantone, southern Switzerland, annually 1987-89, Phlebotomus pemiciosus and P.mascittii were caught regularly by means of light traps, but only when the traps were in close association with humans. The most productive catching sites were in the middle of Sessa village, in basements or partially closed shelters in the immediate vicinity of human dwellings. All catching sites outside the village were negative. The only other sandfly species caught was Sergentomyia minuta, four specimens only. P.pemiciosus and P.mascittii always occurred together and were found to feed - at least occasionally – on human blood. Glucose and fructose were identified in wild-caught sandflies of both species. A breeding place of P.mascittii was identified in the basement of a house in the middle of Sessa. Analyses of soil samples revealed moderately loamy humus with a slightly acidic pH (5.6).  相似文献

Grafting almond variety ‘Garrigues’ onto ‘GF305’ peach seedlings heavily infected by Plum pox virus (PPV) progressively produces the disappearance of viral symptoms and drastically reduces virus accumulation in ‘GF305’ rootstock, in most cases to undetectable levels. This response appears to be specific between almond and peach, as it was not consistently observed by grafting ‘Garrigues’ onto other Prunus species such as plum (‘Adesoto’) or apricot (‘Real Fino’). The ability to induce resistance to PPV in ‘GF305’ was transmitted to the sexual descendants of Garrigues. Furthermore, grafting ‘Garrigues’ onto ‘GF305’ before PPV inoculation completely prevented virus infection, showing that the resistance is constitutive and not induced by the virus. This fact suggests that resistance may be due to the transfer of a defence factor from ‘Garrigues’ almond through the graft union and its interaction with specific factors of ‘GF305’ peach to produce the antiviral response. These results open new avenues to potential protection against PPV in peach, the most economically important species among stone fruits.  相似文献

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a disease that results in approximately 50 000 human deaths annually. It is transmitted through the bites of phlebotomine sandflies and around two‐thirds of cases occur on the Indian subcontinent. Indoor residual spraying (IRS), the efficacy of which depends upon sandfly adults resting indoors, is the only sandfly control method used in India. Recently, in Bihar, India, considerable sandfly numbers have been recorded outdoors in village vegetation, which suggests that IRS may control only a portion of the population. The purpose of this study was to revisit previously published results that suggested some sandflies to be arboreal and to rest on outlying plants by using Centers for Disease Control light traps to capture sandflies in vegetation, including banana plants and palmyra palm trees, in two previously sampled VL‐endemic Bihari villages. Over 3500 sandflies were trapped in vegetation over 12 weeks. The results showed the mean number of sandflies collected per trap night were significantly higher in banana trees than in other vegetation (P = 0.0141) and in female rather than male palmyra palm trees (P = 0.0002). The results raise questions regarding sandfly dispersal, oviposition and feeding behaviours, and suggest a need to refine current control practices in India and to take into account an evolving understanding of sandfly ecology.  相似文献

Background

Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis is endemic in the Mediterranean Basin, where the dog is the main reservoir host. The disease''s causative agent, Leishmania infantum, is transmitted by blood-feeding female sandflies. This paper reports an integrative study of canine leishmaniasis in a region of France spanning the southwest Massif Central and the northeast Pyrenees, where the vectors are the sandflies Phlebotomus ariasi and P. perniciosus.

Methods

Sandflies were sampled in 2005 using sticky traps placed uniformly over an area of approximately 100 by 150 km. High- and low-resolution satellite data for the area were combined to construct a model of the sandfly data, which was then used to predict sandfly abundance throughout the area on a pixel by pixel basis (resolution of c. 1 km). Using literature- and expert-derived estimates of other variables and parameters, a spatially explicit R 0 map for leishmaniasis was constructed within a Geographical Information System. R 0 is a measure of the risk of establishment of a disease in an area, and it also correlates with the amount of control needed to stop transmission.

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this is the first analysis that combines a vector abundance prediction model, based on remotely-sensed variables measured at different levels of spatial resolution, with a fully mechanistic process-based temperature-dependent R 0 model. The resulting maps should be considered as proofs-of-principle rather than as ready-to-use risk maps, since validation is currently not possible. The described approach, based on integrating several modeling methods, provides a useful new set of tools for the study of the risk of outbreaks of vector-borne diseases.  相似文献
