Parthenogenesis is reported in three soft scales with 2n=16. In the unfertilized eggs of all three, oogenesis is normal and diploidy is restored by the fusion of the division products of the haploid female pronucleus. In Lecanium putmani Phillips 12 of 13 uninseminated females collected in the wild produced only males. The 21 inseminated females produced 15% males. The males were diploid but contained one euchromatic (E) and one heterochromatic (H) chromosome set. Most of the eggs produced by the inseminated females contained sperm but a few did not. It was concluded, therefore, that females develop from fertilized eggs and males from unfertilized eggs and that the species was diploid arrhenotokous. In L. cerasifex Fitch only 18 of 56 females collected in the wild had been inseminated. The frequency of males among their embryos was 22%. The males were again diploid with one E and one H set of chromosomes. Among the 38 uninseminated females, 27 produced only males, and 10 produced only females. All the female producers contained needle-like bacterial symbionts. Most of the male producers, and most of the inseminated females contained no symbionts; the rest contained rod-like symbionts. It was concluded, therefore, that the females of L. cerasifex studied belonged to two races, a diploid arrhenotokous race and an obligate automictic thelytokous race. Eucalymantus tessellatus (Signoret) is obligate automictic thelytokous. All the females examined were uninseminated and produced only females.Supported by Grant GB 23665 from the National Science Foundation, Washington, D.C.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The reproductive status of individual queens in relation to the number of queens in polygyne colonies of Solenopsis invicta Buren was investigated under both field and laboratory conditions. In field colonies, the weight of individual queens is inversely related to the number of resident queens present. The weight of a queen is positively correlated with fecundity, as measured by the number of eggs laid in 5 h in isolation. Thus increasing queen number has a strong negative effect on the fecundity of individual queens in these colonies. A similar relationship was established in standardized laboratory colonies using queens from a single experimental population. Colony size by itself had no significant effect on queen weight in either the field or laboratory colonies, suggesting that the inverse relationship between queen number and fecundity results from mutual inhibition among queens, possibly involving pheromones, rather than reduced nutrition through lower worker/queen ratios. While uninseminated queens can comprise up to 50% of the functional (i.e. egglaying) queens in polygyne colonies of this ant, they tend to be less fecund than their inseminated nestmates; uninseminated queens within a given colony generally weigh 5–25% less.  相似文献

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were given 1 μl blood enemas, and their subsequent host-seeking behaviour determined in an olfactometer. Those females failing to develop eggs consistently responded to a host stimulus whenever tested, but inseminated mosquitoes developing eggs were inhibited from host-seeking during the period of egg development. Gravid uninseminated mosquitoes were also inhibited, but not to the same degree as inseminated mosquitoes. Experiments involving surgical manipulations and haemolymph transfusions indicate that a haemolymph-borne substance, present during egg development, inhibits the response toward a host.  相似文献

The egg cortical reaction in Limulus polyphemus is described in four events. Approximately 10 min after insemination, small “pits” are visible in the cortex of the inseminated Limulus egg. These pits progressively enlarge, eventually coalesce, and finally disappear, leaving a smooth-appearing surface approximately 60–90 min after insemination. Based on these visible changes, the following four events comprise the cortical reaction: (I) uninseminated egg—smooth surface, (II) inseminated egg—appearance and growth of pits, (III) inseminated egg—coalescence of pits, and (IV) inseminated egg—appearance of smooth surface. Preparation of these events for SEM studies demonstrated morphological characteristics and sequential development of the pits. Also numerous microvilli are found on the surface of uninseminated and inseminated eggs during the cortical reaction. An increase in their diameter during the reaction is particularly unique.  相似文献

The reproductive attributes of commercially-produced Trichogramma platneri, T. minutum and T. pretiosum reared from eggs of both Ephestia kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella were monitored at 25 C. The age-specific fecundity, longevity and progeny sex ratio and adult size were determined for individual females from all six combinations of Trichogramma and rearing host, using E. kuehniella as the experimental host. Rearing host had a significant influence on the lifetime fecundity, 3-day fecundity and longevity of all three Trichogramma species. In general, the performance of T. minutum and T. pretiosum was better when reared from S. cerealella, but that of T. platneri was superior when reared from E. kuehniella. The lifetime fecundity of the Trichogramma species was linearly related to longevity and the ranking between species was T. pretiosum > T. minutum > T. platneri. The age-specific pattern of oviposition for T. platneri was distinctly precocious, with 40% of its lifetime fecundity oviposited on the first day, in contrast to 17-24% for the other two species. Progeny sex ratio over the lifetime of the Trichogramma females was slightly male biased and differed significantly from 0.5 for T. minutum and T. platneri. Daily sex ratio for parasitoids reared from the most productive rearing host was female biased only for the first day of oviposition for T. platneri in contrast to the first 5-6 days of oviposition for the other two species. There was little evidence that any of the reproductive attributes of these Trichogramma species, reared from small host eggs, was dependent on the size of the adult females.  相似文献

Female moths of Bombyx mori were artificially inseminated with cryopreserved semen. The fertility of inseminated females varied from 0% to 76.9% depending on the strain. Addition of fresh semen from triploid males, which are infertile but whose semen includes intact apyrene sperm, greatly improved fecundity of cryopreserved semen from normal males. Frozen apyrene sperm from the triploid donors also improved the fecundity of females, inseminated with cryopreserved normal semen, but less than fresh semen from triploid males. Fertilization success in B. mori requires the presence of both, intact eupyrene and apyrene sperm. Our results show that eupyrene sperm tolerate the cryopreservation process better than apyrene sperm. Hence, we recommend to add apyrene sperm from the triploid donors as helper sperm routinely to cryopreserved semen in artificial insemination. This may advance the application of cryopreservation as a routine technique to maintain silkworm resources. The technique may also be applicable to other moth and butterfly species which, like B. mori, possess eupyrene and apyrene sperm.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The circadian flight activity of female Aedes aegypti (L.) changes after insemination and during the course of the gonotrophic cycle. Virgin females attain a high level of spontaneous activity within 3–4 days of adult emergence; in LD 12:12 there are peaks of activity at the beginning and end of the light phase. Inseminated females are less than 20% as active as virgins, but exhibit a similar daily pattern. After blood-feeding, inseminated females become almost totally inactive for about 48h and then show a unimodal pattern of activity which is consistent with oviposition behaviour; after oviposition they revert to the basic inseminated pattern and level of activity. Blood-fed virgin females continue to show a high level of spontaneous activity. It is suggested that insemination has the general effect of raising the threshold for activity and that it is necessary before blood-fed females can switch to the gravid behaviour programme. Blood-fed uninseminated females thus continue with behaviour which will maximize the probability of insemination.  相似文献

A new species of spider mite, Tetranychus bunda sp. n., is described and illustrated from Australia. It was found damaging the foliage of Desmodium tortuosum (Sw.) DC. (Fabaceae) in Darwin, Northern Territory. In addition, the geographical range of Tetranychus fijiensis Hirst is extended to include Australia. This species was found in the Northern Territory feeding on frangipani ( Plumeria sp., Apocynaceae), betel palm ( Areca catechu L., Arecaceae) and Macarthur feather palm ( Ptychosperma macarthurii [H. Wendl. ex Veitch] (H. Wendl. ex Hook. f., Arecaceae)). Details of the biology of T. bunda sp. n. and T. fijiensis are given. A key to the major groups of Tetranychus Dufour of the world, based on females, is presented and species known to occur in Australia are outlined.  相似文献

1. Blood and sugar feeding in the mosquito Anopheles messeae Falleroni were investigated near Uppsala, Sweden, from 1981 to 1985, with emphasis on prehibernation diet. 2. Fructose, indicating plant feeding, was present in females of all ovarian stages, from April to October, and contributed to fat body development in non-gonoactive females before hibernation. 3. An.messeae males and females (inseminated and uninseminated) were observed feeding on floral nectaries of the plants Achillea millefolium L. and Tanacetum vulgare L. at night during August. 4. Gonotrophic dissociation started in some females in July, and by the end of September all females were inseminated and nulliparous but non-gonoactive. 5. Animal sheds were used as diurnal resting sites of non-gonoactive, prehibernating female An.messeae. Among recently fed mosquitoes in that group, 85% were gut positive for fructose and 15% for blood. Most of them showed negative host tropism, indicating that bloodfeeding is not a prerequisite for hibernation. 6. Survival rates of bloodfed (48 +/- 31 days) and non-bloodfed (42 +/- 21 days) females, collected from a cattle shed in September and kept caged without food or water in a store house, were not significantly different. This indicates that bloodfeeding may occur facultatively before hibernation but does not affect longevity and survival. 7. If overwintering is possible for bloodfed An.messeae females, they would be more likely vectors of pathogens such as Batai virus.  相似文献

Laboratory choice and no-choice cross-mating tests were conducted to establish whether Trissolcus basalis individuals from green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula, and nine other host species sharemating characteristics and belong to the same species. In no-choice cross-mating tests, all individuals in self- and out-crosses mated within 10 minutes. Although all females mated, they were not all inseminated successfully. However, a similar proportion of females was inseminated across all self- and out-crosses in each set of cross-mating tests. Mate-choice tests indicated that males and females selected mates at random. Overall, the results indicate that T. basalis individuals from the ten host species represent a single genetical species. Studying antagonistic coevolution between host plants and herbivores is particularly relevant for polyphagous species that can experience a great diversity of host plants with a large range of defenses. Here, we performed experimental evolution with the polyphagous spider mite Tetranychus urticae to detect how mites can exploit host plants. We thus compared on a same host the performance of replicated populations from an ancestral one reared for hundreds of generations on cucumber plants that were shifted to either tomato or cucumber plants. We controlled for maternal effects by rearing females from all replicated populations on either tomato or cucumber leaves, crossing this factor with the host plant in a factorial design. About 24 generations after the host shift and for all individual mites, we measured the following fitness components on tomato leaf fragments: survival at all stages, acceptance of the host plant by juvenile and adult mites, longevity, and female fecundity. The host plant on which mite populations had evolved did not affect the performance of the mites, but only affected their sex ratio. Females that lived on tomato plants for circa 24 generations produced a higher proportion of daughters than did females that lived on cucumber plants. In contrast, maternal effects influenced juvenile survival, acceptance of the host plant by adult mites and female fecundity. Independently of the host plant species on which their population had evolved, females reared on the tomato maternal environment produced offspring that survived better on tomato as juveniles, but accepted less this host plant as adults and had a lower fecundity than did females reared on the cucumber maternal environment. We also found that temporal blocks affected mite dispersal and both female longevity and fecundity. Taken together, our results show that the host plant species can affect critical parameters of population dynamics, and most importantly that maternal and environmental conditions can facilitate colonization and exploitation of a novel host in the polyphagous T. urticae, by affecting dispersal behavior (host acceptance) and female fecundity.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of adult body size on the pre-gravid state and fecundity was studied in Anopheles gambiae Giles females hand-caught inside houses and virgin females collected as pupae in Tanzania. Blood-fed mosquitoes were kept for 2-3 days before dissection and examination for insemination and ovarian condition. Those females which did not develop eggs were classified as pre-gravid. The number of mature eggs in those mosquitoes which became gravid was counted. Virgin females were fed and kept for egg maturation in the laboratory. Wing-length of females was measured as an index of mosquito size. The overall pre-gravid rate in the resting An. gambiae population was found to be 21% and, of these, 66% had been inseminated. In the virgin females the pre-gravid rate was 92.6%. The mean wing-length of wild females which became gravid was significantly larger than those which remained pre-gravid. There was a positive correlation between fecundity and wing-length. Smaller females tended to require two or three bloodmeals to facilitate completion of the first gonotrophic cycle. The critical size permitting oviposition from the first blood-meal was a wing-length of 3 mm.  相似文献

The host plant acceptance of the phytophagous mite Tetranychus urticae was experimentally quantified. Host plant acceptance is described as the proportion of adult females settling on the test plant on which they have been placed. On the other hand, the host plant suitability of T. urticae on different plant species is expressed as the mean number of eggs produced by the females within 5 days (hereafter 'fecundity'). An inbred T. urticae line was tested with regard to host plant acceptance and fecundity on 11 potential host plants. These two variables were positively correlated across host plants; host plant species on which the fecundity was low were also those on which females settled less readily compared to host plants with high fecundity. The characteristics of host plant acceptance of the T. urticae are discussed in light of their potential food resource under natural conditions.  相似文献

Activity of the sperm-derived oocyte-activating factor persists in zygotes and can be detected by a fusion with metaphase II (MII) oocytes leading to the activation of the hybrids. We have shown, that in the great majority of oocytes inseminated 1-2 hr after germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) the sperm-derived activating ability was eliminated. Only few hybrids produced by fusion of MII oocytes with oocytes inseminated during in vitro maturation (M x IVM-P + sperm hybrids) underwent activation, whereas almost all of MII oocyte x zygote hybrids entered interphase. However, frequency of activation of M x IVM-P + sperm hybrids was higher than that of control hybrids, which were obtained by fusion of MII oocytes with oocytes uninseminated during in vitro maturation. Although the difference was not statistically significant, it suggested that in a certain number of oocytes inseminated after GVBD the sperm-derived oocyte-activating factor remained partially active. This was confirmed by our observation that several oocytes, which were inseminated during in vitro maturation and managed to accomplish MII, underwent activation and formed pronuclei when examined 25-26 hr after the beginning of maturation. We have also demonstrated that parthenogenotes, could acquire the sperm-derived activity, as a consequence of sperm injection. MII oocytes were fused with parthenogenotes inseminated by ICSI and all hybrids underwent activation. This result indicated that the ability to induce activation in hybrid, was sperm-derived.  相似文献

I investigated the influence of insemination at different life stages on female fitness in the mite Histiostoma feroniarum. In this species, males guard immature females at the tritonymph stage to inseminate them immediately after the last moulting. Four groups of females were studied (1) females inseminated naturally, i.e. mating occurred immediately after guarding, and then the male was removed (IF/0M), (2) naturally inseminated females, where after insemination the male was replaced by two additional males (IF/2M), (3) virgin females reared without males (VF/0M) and (4) mature, virgin females to which two virgin males were added 3 days after last moulting (VF/2DM). The results show that females inseminated naturally (IF/0M) have higher longevity and fecundity than either virgin (VF/0M) or late-inseminated females (VF/2DM). Furthermore, longevity and fecundity of the former (IF/0M) was also greater than that of females naturally inseminated and subsequently exposed to males (IF/2M). One may suggest that seminal fluids have a positive effect on female fitness. When delayed insemination occurs, such positive effect may not be observed due to a change in features of the sperm access system. Harassment may explain decreased longevity and fecundity of females inseminated naturally compared to females that received additional males. This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

Polyandry, female mating with multiple males, is widespread across many taxa and almost ubiquitous in insects. This conflicts with the traditional idea that females are constrained by their comparatively large investment in each offspring, and so should only need to mate once or a few times. Females may need to mate multiply to gain sufficient sperm supplies to maintain their fertility, especially in species in which male promiscuity results in division of their ejaculate among many females. Here, we take a novel approach, utilizing wild‐caught individuals to explore how natural variation among females and males influences fertility gains for females. We studied this in the Malaysian stalk‐eyed fly species Teleopsis dalmanni. After an additional mating, females benefit from greatly increased fertility (proportion fertile eggs). Gains from multiple mating are not uniform across females; they are greatest when females have high fecundity or low fertility. Fertility gains also vary spatially, as we find an additional strong effect of the stream from which females were collected. Responses were unaffected by male mating history (males kept with females or in male‐only groups). Recent male mating may be of lesser importance because males in many species, including T. dalmanni, partition their ejaculate to maintain their fertility over many matings. This study highlights the importance of complementing laboratory studies with data on wild‐caught populations, where there is considerable heterogeneity between individuals. Future research should focus on environmental, demographic and genetic factors that are likely to significantly influence variation in individual female fecundity and fertility.  相似文献

Microbe-associated parthenogenesis (thelytoky) has been discovered in nineTrichogramma species, parasitoids of mainly lepidopteran eggs. Parthenogenetic and bisexual conspecifics co-occur in many field populations. As an initial step to understand the dynamics of these two reproductive strategies we studied the effect of microbe-associated parthenogenesis on fecundity. The fecundity of two parthenogenetic isofemale lines ofT. pretiosum and one ofT. deion was compared with bisexual lines derived from them by antibiotic treatment. In all three cases parthenogenetic females were less fecund over their lifetime than bisexual females. Also, parthenogenetic females produced fewer daughters in two cases and in one case a similar number of daughters as their respective bisexual counterparts. The lack of mating and insemination was excluded as an explanation for the reduced fecundity of parthenogenetic females, because mated and virgin parthenogenetic females produce the same number of offspring. Antibiotic treatment can also be excluded because females of field-collected bisexual line treated with antibiotics produced the same number of offspring as untreated females. The reduced fecundity of parthenogenetic females was caused by a lower number of eggs being laid rather than by a greater developmental mortality. Parthenogenetic females produced less daughters than bisexual females when host availability was not limiting, but when host availability was severely limited, parthenogenetic females produced more daughters than the bisexual females.  相似文献

In gynodioecious species, females contribute genes to future generations only through ovules, and to persist in populations they must have a compensatory advantage compared with hermaphrodites that reproduce via ovules and pollen. This compensation can result from greater fecundity and/or superior success of progeny from females. We examined differences in seed production and progeny success between females and hermaphrodites in the geophyte Wurmbea biglandulosa to explain the maintenance of females. Females produced more ovuliferous flowers and had more ovules per flower than did hermaphrodites but this did not necessarily result in greater fecundity, in part because seed production of females was pollen-limited. Over four years in one population, open-pollinated females produced 1.32 more seeds than open-pollinated hermaphrodites (range 1.09–1.63). In two other populations examined for one year only females produced 1.07 and 0.79 as many seeds as hermaphrodites. Seed production of open-pollinated females and hermaphrodites was only 55% and 73% that of cross-pollinated plants, respectively, indicating that both genders were pollen-limited but females more so than hermaphrodites. Open-pollinated seeds from females were 1.18–1.27 times more likely to germinate than seeds from hermaphrodites. No gender differences existed in seedling growth or survival. Hermaphrodites were self-compatible, but selfed seed set was only 80% that of crossed seed set. Crossed seed set of females and hermaphrodites did not differ. Assuming nuclear control of male sterility, relative female fitness is insufficient to maintain females at their current frequencies of 17%, and substantial female fitness advantages at later life-cycle stages are required. We investigated the effect of exposure to males on female longevity and egg production in the stalk-eyed fly, Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni. In this species, females typically mate several times each morning over a lifetime that can span several months. We hypothesised that high costs of mating with males would be incompatible with the life history of this species. We predicted that 1) female longevity costs of exposure to males would be low, and 2) that the magnitude of mating-induced fecundity increases in C. dalmanni, if present, would also be low. We tested the predictions by comparing the longevity and lifetime fecundity of virgin and mated females. In line with prediction 1), the longevity difference between virgin and fully reproductive females was small and of borderline significance. In line with prediction 2), egg production was not significantly higher in females continually exposed to males than for virgin females. Our results suggest that costs of reproduction resulting from exposure to males are low in species that mate promiscuously at high rates.  相似文献
