A SCUBA diver, using a bar-clamp sampler, collected quantitative epilithic algae samples from artificial substrates (slate and acrylic plates) and river stones at two stations on the Susquehanna River bottom in 1974. At Falls, Pennsylvania, algal colonization on monthly plates (submerged for ca. 30 day periods) was most rapid between September and October. In winter, when algal density on cumulative plates (submerged 2–13 mo) and on stones present in the river peaked at 18,100 and 21,900 units/ mm2, respectively, colonization of clean monthly plates nearly ceased. Similar colonization patterns were observed in a portion of the river polluted by coal mine drainages (SSES), but expansion of the algae population at SSES was inhibited by iron in the effluents, and densities never exceeded 2,400 units/mm2 on stones or plates. Diatoms composed 95% of the overall standing crop at Falls and 65% at SSES.  相似文献

Tibbs Run Lake was sampled from December 1979 to December 1980, monthly during the winter and biweekly during the spring, summer, and autumn. Primary production was measured from March 1980 to February 1981, either monthly or biweekly, as indicated above. The mean annual hydrogen ion concentration was equivalent to pH 4.33. This pH was 46% lower (based on H+ concentrations) than the 1977–1978 mean. The low pH of the lake is due to inputs of acid precipitation and the low buffering capacity of the watershed. Predictions of further reductions in the lake pH, based on mean annual hydrogen ion concentrations and hydrogen ion retention coefficients (RH) from Shellito (1979) and this study, indicate that the lake pH should reach an equilibrium with the precipitation pH between 1982 and 1985, assuming the precipitation pH continues to average 4.10. The stratified period mean chlorophyll a and total phosphorus concentrations were 22.1 mg/m3 and 19.3 μg/1, respectively. Total phosphorus loading to the lake was 0.233 gP/m2/yr. To examine the effects of neutralization and fertilization with phosphorus an in situ bag enclosure experiment, lasting 16 days, was performed during the summer of 1980. In the bags, phosphorus (20 μg/1 on days 0,4,8,12 as KH2PO4) was added alone and in combination with a base addition (IN KOH). The base additions raised the pH to approximately 7.8. Other treatments included base addition alone and a control. The maximum chlorophyll a concentration was found in the phosphorus treatment (∼30 mg/m3) on day 6. The phosphorus plus base treatment exhibited a 10 day lag before reaching a maximum chlorophyll a concentration (∼27 mg/m3) on day 16. The highest production rate was found in the phosphorus plus base treatment on day 12 (∼27 mgC/m3/hr.). A similar bag experiment, lasting 46 days, was performed during the late summer and early autumn of 1980. The treatments were the same as in the first experiment, however, the nitrate-nitrogen depletion in the lake and treatments necessitated the addition of nitrogen (2 mg/1 as NaNO3) to one of each replicate treatment on day 5. On day 34, the maximum chlorophyll a concentrations were found in the phosphorus plus base nitrogen treatment (∼120 mg/m3) and the phosphorus plus nitrogen treatment (∼38.8 mg/m3). The control plus nitrogen treatment was submerged and possibly contaminated on day 5. All treatments not receiving nitrogen, except for the phosphorus plus base treatment, decreased in the chlorophyll a concentration throughout the experiment. The phosphorus plus base treatment peaked in the chlorophyll a concentration on day 45 (∼28 mg/m3) despite non-detectable levels of nitrate-nitrogen. The maximum primary production rate was found in the phosphorus plus base plus nitrogen treatment (∼32 mgC/m3/hr.) on day 11.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of the ultraoligotrophic Lake 95 (61°N, 46°W, 8 ha, zmax=18 m, ) is composed of about 14 taxa dominated by 12 Chironomidae species. Abundance, life cycle, biomass and production were estimated for the six dominant taxa. Abundance declined fromca. 4150 at 2.5 m depth toca. 1400 ind m–2 at 16 m depth and averagedca. 3200 ind m–2 on a lakewide basis. By numbers,Heterotrissocladius changi andH. oliveri dominated the average fauna.H. changi was common at the 2.5 m and 5 m depth stations, whereasH. oliveri dominated from 5 m depth downwards. Chironomids showed mainly a 1-yr life cycle, but apparently bothHeterotrissocladius species had two contemporary cohorts with emergence in midsummer and late autumn/early spring, respectively. Average annual ratio was 4.2 and 4.6 forH. oliveri andH. changi, respectively. Annual production varied from 0.3 g ash-free dry weight (AFDW) m–2 y–1 at 16 m depth to 1.6 g AFDW m–2 y–1 at 2.5 m depthH. changi contributed 45%, fiveMicropsectra spp. 17% andH. oliveri 15% to total average production, which on a lakewide basis wasca. 1.1 g AFDW or 25 kJ m–2 y–1. Lake 95 thus belongs at the very low end of measured lake zoobenthic productions, which range from 10 kJ m–2 y–1 in Arctic lakes toca. 1600 kJ m–2 y–1 in highly eutrophic shallow lakes.  相似文献

The electrochemical potential differences for potassium, between excised barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots and external media containing 0.05 mM KCl+0.5 mM CaSO4, were determined over a 4-h period during which initially low-K+ roots accumulated K+ by pretreatment in 50 mM KCl plus 0.5 mM CaCl2. This pretreatment resulted in increased internal [K+], decreased K+ influx (as measured from 0.05 mM KCl+0.5 mM CaSO4) and decreased values of . These observations indicate that the decline of K+ influx associated with increased internal K+ concentration cannot be accounted for by passive adjustment to the electrochemical gradient for this ion.  相似文献

A series of hexadentate ligands, H2Lm (m = 1−4), [1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene]{2-[2-(2-{[1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene]amino}phenoxy)ethoxy]phenyl}amine (H2L1), [1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene]{2-[4-(2-{[1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene]amino}phenoxy)butoxy]phenyl}amine (H2L2), [1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene][2-({2-[(2-{[1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene]amino}phenyl)thio]ethyl}thio)phenyl]amine (H2L3) and [1H-pyrrol-2-ylmethylene][2-({4-[(2-{[1H-pyrrol-2-lmethylene]amino}phenyl)thio]butyl}thio) phenyl]amine (H2L4) were prepared by condensation reaction of pyrrol-2-carboxaldehyde with {2-[2-(2-aminophenoxy)ethoxy]phenyl}amine, {2-[4-(2-aminophenoxy)butoxy]phenyl}amine, [2-({2-[(2-aminophenyl)thio]ethyl}thio)phenyl]amine and [2-({4-[(2-aminophenyl)thio]butyl}thio)phenyl]amine respectively. Reaction of these ligands with nickel(II) and copper(II) acetate gave complexes of the form MLm (m = 1−4), and the synthesized ligands and their complexes have been characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. The solid and solution states investigations show that the complexes are neutral. The molecular structures of NiL3 and CuL2, which have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicate that the NiL3 complex has a distorted octahedral coordination environment around the metal while the CuL2 complex has a seesaw coordination geometry. DFT calculations were used to analyse the electronic structure and simulation of the electronic absorption spectrum of the CuL2 complex using TDDFT gives results that are consistent with the measured spectroscopic behavior of the complex. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that all copper complexes are electrochemically inactive but the nickel complexes with softer thioethers are more easily oxidized than their oxygen analogs.  相似文献

1. Monitoring at fortnightly to monthly intervals of a very shallow, lowland lake over 24 years has enabled the time course of recovery from nutrient enrichment to be investigated after high external P loading of the lake (>10 g P m?2 year?1) was reduced between 1977 and 1980. 2. The lake showed a relatively rapid response during the spring and early summer, with a reduction in phytoplankton biomass occurring after 5 years when soluble reactive phosphorus concentration was <10 μg L?1. 3. However, during the later summer the response was delayed for 15 years because of sustained remobilisation of phosphorus from the sediment. The greater water clarity in spring and a gradual shift from planktonic to benthic algal growth may be related to the reduction in internal loading after 15 years. 4. Changes in the phytoplankton community composition were also observed. Centric diatoms became less dominant in the spring, and the summer cyanobacteria populations originally dominated by non‐heterocystous species (Limnothrix/Planktothrix spp.) almost disappeared. Heterocystous species (Anabaena spp. and Aphanizomenon flosaquae) were slower to decline, but after 20 years the phytoplankton community was no longer dominated by cyanobacteria. 5. There were no substantial changes in food web structure following re‐oligotrophication. Total zooplankton biomass decreased but body size of Daphnia hyalina, the largest zooplankton species in the lake, remained unchanged, suggesting that the fish population remained dominated by planktivorous species. 6. Macrophyte growth was still largely absent after 20 years, although during the spring water clarity may have become sufficient for macrophytes to re‐establish.  相似文献

A detailed eruption sequence and associated age of eruption for deciduous dentition in baboons (Papio sp) are presented in this paper. The sequence was determined by evaluation and comparison of the number and kinds of teeth present in nine age cohorts comprising the study sample of 88 males and 87 females who ranged in age from birth to 763 days. Eruption was assessed visually as present or absent. Several statistical methods used to derive the ages associated with the eruption sequence are described. The basic eruption sequence in the sample population is: i1 i1, i2, i2, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm c}\limits_{\rm -} {\rm,}\mathop {\rm c}\limits^{\rm -} $\end{document} m1 (m2, m2), M1, M1. Both sexes show the same pattern, with the exception of the second deciduous molar, where males show a sequence of m2, m2, while females show the opposite. The objective of this research was to identify the materials and methods necessary to study the attached algal community on a river bottom in deep water. The study site was the Susquehanna River near Falls, Pennsylvania. Artificial substrates of smooth glass, frosted glass, Vermont slate, sandy slate (flagstone) and acrylic plate were placed on the stream bottom in detritus free sample holders by scuba divers. Both monthly and long-term cumulative samples were collected from the plates employing scuba and a Bar-Clamp sampler. River stones (natural substrates) were collected for comparison. Samples were analyzed in a Palmer Cell under a Bausch and Lomb research microscope. Diatoms were the most important colonizers of river stones, with the genera Nitzschia and Navicula most abundant. Highest periphyton densities occurred on natural substrates in winter with a maximum of 2.2 × 104 units/ mm2. Artificial substrates with one month exposure periods accumulated maximum periphyton density from May through October with relatively low densities in winter. Cumulative artificial substrates were most like river stones in patterns of colonization. Frosted acrylic is recommended for future studies employing benthic artificial periphyton substrates.This study was partially supported by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company  相似文献

The presence of both book lungs and a tracheal system in many spiders raises the question of the functional significance of this double respiratory system. The present physiological and morphometric study of the house spider (Tegenaria spp.) reveals that the diffusing capacity (Dto2) of the lungs alone suffices during rest and following exercise to meet measured rates of oxygen consumption (\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm V}\limits^{\rm.} $\end{document}o2) at driving pressures (ΔPto 2) similar to those calculated for vertebrate lungs. During moulting ΔPto 2 may rise to more than double the vertebrate values, implying the possible insufficiency of book lungs during this critical life phase. Resting \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm V}\limits^{\rm .} $\end{document}o2 is greatest (92 mm3/h · g) during the early morning and lowest (66 mm3/h · g) near midday: during moulting \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm V}\limits^{\rm .} $\end{document}o2 rises to 278.7 mm3/h · g. In spiders recovering from exercise \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm V}\limits^{\rm .} $\end{document}o2 is consistently greater than during rest: neither value is significantly reduced by blockage of the tracheal stigmas. Regression calculations of morphometric values for a hypothetical 100-mg Tegenaria yield a total lung volume of 0.578 mm3, a pulmonary surface area of 69.8 mm2, and a surface-to-volume ratio of 120.89 mm2/mm3. In spite of the similar thickness of the chitinous and hypodermal components of the air-hemolymph barrier (each ca. 0.2 μm in nonmoulting animals), the low permeability of chitin for oxygen makes this layer the greater barrier to diffusion. For a 100-mg specimen Dto2 is 3.5 mm3/h · torr: similar to that of a turtle (Pseudemys) on a gram-body weight basis.  相似文献

Fungal agents are responsible for a variety of respiratory diseases both in humans and animals. The nature and seasonal variations of fungi have been investigated in many environments with wide ranging results. The aims of the present report were (i) to evaluate the quality and magnitude of exposure to airborne fungi in three differently structured equine stalls (open air, partially and completely enclosed buildings) during a one-year period, using an air sampling technique and (ii) to compare the distribution and frequency of fungal species, with regards to these different environments. Air samples were collected monthly from December 2001 to November 2002 by means of a surface air sampler (SAS) Super-90, (PBI International, Milan, Italy). Penicillium and Aspergillus spp. were cultured from all the stables in all seasons. Mucoraceae were also recovered in all seasons in stalls 1 and 2, while they were not isolated in spring and fall in stall 3. These fungi were detected in 28.4%, 72.9% and 60.5% of the total number of samples, respectively. Other fungal genera such as Alternaria, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Beauveria and Drechslera were also occasionally recovered.Viable fungal concentrations varied greatly, ranging from below the limit of detection to more than 3000 CFU/m3 for stables 1 and 2, and 1750 CFU/m3 for stable 3. The median fungal concentration was approximately 178 CFU/m3. Total fungal concentration appeared to be highest in summer, winter and spring, and lowest in the fall.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa phosphorylcholine phosphatase (PchP) catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphorylcholine, which is produced by the action of hemolytic phospholipase C on phosphatidylcholine or sphyngomielin, to generate choline and inorganic phosphate. Among divalent cations, its activity is dependent on Mg2+ or Zn2+. Mg2+ produced identical activation at pH 5.0 and 7.4, but Zn2+ was an activator at pH 5.0 and became an inhibitor at pH 7.4. At this higher pH, very low concentrations of Zn2+ inhibited enzymatic activity even in the presence of saturating Mg2+ concentrations. Considering experimental and theoretical physicochemical calculations performed by different authors, we conclude that at pH 5.0, Mg2+ and Zn2+ are hexacoordinated in an octahedral arrangement in the PchP active site. At pH 7.4, Mg2+ conserves the octahedral coordination maintaining enzymatic activity. The inhibition produced by Zn2+ at 7.4 is interpreted as a change from octahedral to tetrahedral coordination geometry which is produced by hydrolysis of the [ \textZn 2+ \textL 2 - 1 \textL 20 ( \textH 2 \textO ) 2 ] \left[ {{\text{Zn}}^{ 2+ } {\text{L}}_{ 2}^{ - 1} {\text{L}}_{ 2}^{0} \left( {{\text{H}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}} \right)_{ 2} } \right] complex.  相似文献

Undariopsis peterseniana is an endangered annual brown alga in Udo, Jeju Island, Korea. There is current interest in the commercial-scale aquaculture of this species for warm-water species development in Korea. Growth and maturation were investigated from January to December 2007 in their natural habitat. Zoospores were transplanted into an intensive seaweed culture ground in Wando, southern coast of Korea, for the mass cultivation of this species. Indoor and outdoor cultivation were conducted from June 2007 to May 2008. Mean production obtained from the zoospore seeding was 31.1 ± 1.5 kg wet wt. m−1 of culture rope during the cultivation period in situ. Transplanted F1 thalli in Wando had a length 1.7 times longer than their parents in Udo, and their maximal growth period changed from June (at 19.9°C in Udo of natural habitat) to April (at 14.0°C in Wando of culture ground). The relationship between optimal water depth for culture and underwater irradiance during the U. peterseniana cultivation was defined as: y = - 0.78 ×+ 7.67( r2 = 0.92 ) y = - 0.78 \times + 7.67\left( {{r^2} = 0.92} \right) . This study indicates that U. peterseniana could be successfully transferred to the northern coast beyond the original habitat in Jeju Island.  相似文献

1. The life cycles and annual production of the eight most abundant species of chironomids (Prodadius cf. choreus, Tanypus punctipennis, Chironomus bernensis, Chironomus gr. plumosus, Cladopelma virescens, Microchironomus tencr, Tanytarsus gr. lestagei, and Cladotanytarsus atridorsum) were studied from sublittoral and profundal samples taken monthly in Lake Banyoles during 1987 at five sampling stations (depths ranging from 5 to 20 m). 2. The number of generations per year deduced from instar-frequency data varied from one to four, depending on the species, lake basin and depth. Annual temperature range, dissolved oxygen in the stratified period and presence of sulphide are the key factors that may explain the differences in the number of generations. 3. Production estimates were calculated using the size-frequency (SF) method corrected for the number of generations (SFG), and the increment-summation method (IS) when cohorts could be clearly deduced. 4. Production calculated with the SFG method gave results which were comparable with those of the IS method using smoothed-survivorship curves in the three species for which the use of the IS method was possible (C. virescens, M. tener and C. atridorsum). Using these methods production was estimated to range from 23–70 mg AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m?2 yr?1 at 12 m to 74–275 mg AFDW m?2 yr?1 in the sublittoral zone of the lake (5-m depth). 5. Calculation of production for the other five species using the size-frequency method with the number of generations (SFG) deduced from monthly instar-frequency data gave values ranging from 12 mg AFDW m?2 yr?1 (Chironomus bernensis at 20 m depth) to 3.75 g AFDW m?2 yr?1(Prodadius cf. choreus at 12 m). 6. Total chironomid production (with the SFG method) varied from 0.8 to 5 g AFDW m?2 yr?1 in the profundal and sublittoral, respectively. At each sampling station two species groups accounted for most of the production: Prodadius cf. choreus and Chironomus spp. Annual production/biomass ratio (P/B) varied from very high values for Prodadius (between 11 and 27, as four generations completed each year) to very low values for Chironomus gr. plumosus (2.20), which completed only one generation each year. The annual production of P. cf. choreus in Lake Banyoles is higher than any reported in the literature due to the completion of four generations and to the high densities of this species.  相似文献

The thermodynamic functions of biopolymer hydration were investigated by multitemperature vapor pressure studies. Desorption measurements were performed that allowed determination of reversible isotherms in the hydration range of 0.1 to 0.3–0.5 g H2O/g dry polymer. These isotherms are accessible to thermodynamic interpretation and are relevant to the interaction of water with biopolymers in their solution conformation. The results obtained on a series of different biopolymers (lysozyme, α-chymotrypsin, apo-lactoferrin, and desoxyribonucleic acid), show the following common features of interest: (1) The differential excess enthalpies (ΔHe ) and entropies (ΔSe ) are negative, and exhibit pronounced anomalies in a well-defined low-humidity range (approx. 0.1 g H2O/g dry polymer). These initial extrema are interpretable by structural changes, induced in the native biopolymer structures by water removal below a critical degree of hydration. (2) The ΔHe and ΔSe terms exhibit statistically significant linear enthalpy–entropy compensation effects in all biopolymer–water systems investigated. The compensation temperatures \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \hat \beta = \overline {\Delta H} ^e /\overline {\Delta S} ^e $\end{document} are approximately identical for all biopolymers, ranging from 360 to 500 K. The compensation effects are attributable to phase transitions of water molecules between the bulk liquid and the inner-sphere hydration shell of native biopolymers. (3) The negative excess free energies (ΔGe ) decrease monotonically with increasing water content and are close to zero at 0.3 to 0.5 g H2O/g polymer. This result indicates that only transitions between the bulk liquid and the inner-sphere hydration shell are associated with significant net free energy effects. The outer-sphere hydration water is thermodynamically comparable to bulk water. The importance of the proportionality factor \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \hat \beta $\end{document} in the control of the free energy term is discussed.  相似文献

Relationships between insect abundance and standing crop of coarse detritus, which was estimated both volumetrically and gravimetrically, were studied in a second-order stream (Little Sugar Creek, Pennsylvania) between June 1977 and June 1978. For individual taxa, coefficients of determination (R2) for relationships between insect abundance and standing crop of detritus were significant (P≦0.05) in 39% (by volume) and 32% (by weight) of the cases. Deposit feeding collectors accounted for only 41% of the significant R2 values. For total fauna, R2 values were significant (P≦0.05) on 7 of the 11 dates (by volume) and on 8 of the 11 dates (by weight).  相似文献

This paper introduces a new type of Cayley graphs for building large-scale interconnection networks, namely WGn2m\mathit{WG}_{n}^{2m}, whose vertex degree is m+3 when n≥3 and is m+2 when n=2. A routing algorithm for the proposed graph is also presented, and the upper bound of the diameter is deduced as ⌊5n/2⌋. Moreover, the embedding properties and maximal fault tolerance are also analyzed. Finally, we compare the proposed networks with some other similar network topologies. It is found that WGn2m\mathit{WG}_{n}^{2m} is superior to other interconnection networks because it helps to construct large-scale networks with lower cost.  相似文献

The diel and seasonal variation of molluscs living in a Zostera marina bed (12–14 m depth) from southern Spain have been studied for one year using a small Agassiz trawl for collecting the samples (222 m2). The frequent and dominant species were very similar in both diurnal and nocturnal samples, including mainly gastropods such as Jujubinus striatus, Nassarius pygmaeus, Mitrella minor, Calliostoma planatum, Rissoa membranacea or Smaragdia viridis. Nevertheless, a significant increase of abundance of scavengers (e.g. Nassarius spp.) and carnivores (e.g. cephalopods) was registered in nocturnal samples. The abundance was maximal in spring and summer in diurnal and nocturnal samples and also in autumn for nocturnal ones, displaying significantly higher values in nocturnal samples. The species richness, diversity and evenness displayed a similar seasonal trend for diurnal and nocturnal samples, with maximum values during summer months. Monthly variation of the molluscan composition (species presence-absence data) was more acute than diel variation, according to the Cluster, MDS and ANOSIM results. Nevertheless, both monthly and diel changes in the structure (species abundance data) of the molluscan taxocoenosis were important throughout the year. Diel changes in the structure of the molluscan fauna are related to an increase of abundance of some species at nighttime due to vertical movements from the sediment to the shoots or along them (e.g. J. striatus, Nassarius spp.) or due to horizontal movements from adjacent habitats (e.g. cephalopods). Nevertheless, some species such as Rissoa spp. or Bittium spp. stay on the leaves of Z. marina during day as well as nighttime. Quantitative zooplankton samples were obtained monthly or bi-monthly 15 times from June 1974 to May 1975 at three stations in lower Delaware Bay. Two 12-hour cruises were also conducted at one of the stations.Arthropods dominated the samples in terms of number of species and number of individuals. The number of zooplankton from surface samples ranged from 58/m3 in August to 21,092/ m3 in June, while bottom samples varied from 259/m3 in August to 30,395/ m3 in October. In general, larger concentrations of individuals were found in bottom samples.Only on three occasions did meroplankton exceed the holoplankton, and these occurred at the shallow water stations. Meroplankton comprised a larger percentage of the bottom samples than surface samples. Zoeae of Neopanope sayi and Uca sp. contributed mainly to the large proportion of meroplankton in July 1974, veligers of Mytilus edulis in January 1975, and nauplii of Balanus sp. in May 1975.Copepods were the largest component of the population throughout most of the year. At all stations and depths, Arctica tonsa dominated most of the summer samples. In the spring of 1975, A. tonsa was replaced by Centropages hamatus, Temora longicornis, and Pseudocalanus minutus.During the 12-hour cruises there were higher numbers of individuals in the bottom waters in the day with migration to surface waters in the afternoon and evening. Based on cluster analysis, five time-related assemblages were discerned: June, July–August, September–November, December, January–May. Comparison of Delaware Bay zooplankton with other estuarine systems indicated that the densities obtained locally were most similar to those reported in the York River, Virginia.  相似文献
