Plasma corticosterone (CST) level and body weight were studied in male and female rats after bilateral pallidal lesion (GPL). The effect of high dose of glycocorticoids on body weight of food and water deprived, non-lesioned rats was also studied since high CST levels due to the stress caused by the aphagia and adipsia could be anticipated. Weight changes in lesioned-adrenalectomized animals were in investigated as well. A weight loss, higher in males than females, developed after the pallidal lesion and the CST level was higher in lesioned females than in lesioned males. This sex-difference was present in non-lesioned, food and water deprived animals as well. The weight loss was higher in lesioned males than in food and water deprived male/female controls. Adrenalectomy eliminated weight loss differences between the sexes after lesion, by reducing the weight loss in males. CST administration reduced body weight loss in food and water deprived males but not in familes, and cortisol facilitated it in both sexes.  相似文献

Monitor lizards belong to the largest and the most sexually dimorphic lizards in terms of size, making this group an ideal model for studies analyzing ontogenetic causes of sexual dimorphism. Understanding of these ontogenetic factors is essential to the current discussion concerning patterns of sexual dimorphism in animals. We examined the ontogenetic trajectories of body weight and snout-vent length to analyze the emergence of sexual size dimorphism. Experimental animals were 22 males and 13 females of mangrove-dwelling monitors (Varanus indicus) hatched at the Prague Zoo. They were regularly weighed and measured up to the age of 33-40 months, and subsequently sexed by ultrasonographic imaging. The logistic growth equation was used to describe and analyze the observed growth patterns. Our results confirm considerable sexual size dimorphism in the mangrove monitor. The mean asymptotic body weight of males was nearly three times higher than that of females. As the body size of male and female hatchlings is almost equal, and the growth rate parameter (K) of the logistic growth equation as well as the absolute growth rate up to the age of 12 months do not differ between the sexes, size differences between fully grown males and females should be attributed to timing of the postnatal growth. Males continue to grow several months after they reach the age when the growth of females is already reduced. Therefore, the sexual size dimorphism emerges and sharply increases at this period.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the caridean shrimp Palaemon peringueyi in the temporarily open/closed Kasouga Estuary, Eastern Cape, was examined during summer and winter employing stomach fullness index (SFI) analysis. Mean SFI values for male and female shrimp during summer ranged from 0.85% to 2.36% and from 0.56% and 2.61% body dry weight, respectively. During winter, SFI values for males and females were lower, and varied between 0.23% and 1.56% and 0.36% and 1.84% body dry weight, respectively. There were no significant differences in the SFI values between males and females during the two seasons. A peak in the feeding activity for both sexes was observed during the daytime during both summer and winter. For both males and females, non-linear regression analysis best explained the change in SFI over time. The gut evacuation rate constants (k) of males and females during summer were estimated at 0.43 h?1 and 0.30 h?1, respectively. These values correspond to a daily food intake equivalent to 16.2% body dwt for males and 11.1% body dwt for females. During winter, the gut evacuation rates of the shrimp were estimated at 0.35 h?1 for males and 0.28 h?1 for females. The daily ration for adult male and female shrimp during winter was estimated at 6.1% and 6.8% body dwt, respectively. The lower estimates obtained during winter appear largely to reflect the influence of the reduced water temperatures on the metabolic activities of the shrimp.  相似文献

Prior intrauterine position influences body weight in male and female mice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In two longitudinal studies, intrauterine location of male and female Rockland-Swiss mice relative to fetuses of the same and opposite sex dramatically influenced body weight. In one study, body weight of males and females that were located in utero between two female fetuses (OM animals) or between two male fetuses (2M animals) was assessed from birth to the time of weaning (25 days of age). The body weights of 2M females were indistinguishable from those of OM and 2M males on all but a few of the 25 postnatal days of life. Also, 2M females were significantly heavier than OM females from Postnatal Day 6 onward, and 2M males weighed significantly more than OM males from Postnatal Day 19 onward. In a second study, food intake and body weight of animals from different intrauterine locations were examined from 25 to 120 days of age. Regardless of prior intrauterine position, males were always heavier than females. However, prior in utero location modulated body weight in that 2M females were significantly heavier than OM females and 2M males were reliably heavier than OM males. Intrauterine position effects were observed in the absence of any appreciable influence of this variable on levels of food intake. Taken together, the results suggest that prior in utero location may influence metabolic set points involved in the regulation of body weight and fat storage.  相似文献

Ten male and nine female habituated chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Kasoje area of the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, were weighed intermittently between December 1973 and March 1980 by luring them up a rope hung on a spring balance: six adult males averaged 42.0 kg and eight adult females 35.2 kg. Seasonal change in body weight was recognized at least partially; body weights tended to decrease in the later part of the wet season presumably because of food shortage in the middle of the wet season. Comparison of body weight among three populations of the same subspecies suggests that adult female chimpanzees of Mahale appear to be heavier than those of the Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and that they seem to be similar to the forest-living counterparts of eastern Zaire. On the other hand, body weights of adult male chimpanzees from the three populations do not show significant differences. Perhaps feeding competition among adult females in a small, isolated habitat is more severe than that among adult males, which may result in the body weight reduction among adult female chimpanzees at Gombe.  相似文献

Gorillas are the largest and among the most sexually dimorphic of all extant primates. While gorillas have been incorporated in broad-level comparisons among large-bodied hominoids or in studies of the African apes, comparisons between gorilla subspecies have been rare. During the past decade, however, behavioral, morphological, and molecular data from a number of studies have indicated that the western lowland (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and eastern mountain (Gorilla gorilla beringei) subspecies differ to a greater extent than has been previously believed. In this study I compare patterns of relative growth of the postcranial skeleton to evaluate whether differences between subspecies result from the differential extension of common patterns of relative growth. In addition, patterns of ontogeny and sexual dimorphism are also examined. Linear skeletal dimensions and skeletal weight were obtained for ontogenetic series of male and female G.g. gorilla (n = 315) and G.g. beringei (n = 38). Bivariate and multivariate methods of analysis were used to test for differences in patterns of relative growth, ontogeny, and sexual dimorphism between sexes of each subspecies and in same-sex comparisons between subspecies. Results indicate males and females of both subspecies are ontogenetically scaled for postcranial proportions and that females undergo an earlier skeletal growth spurt compared to males. However, results also indicate that the onset of the female growth spurt occurs at different dental stages in lowland and mountain gorillas and that mountain gorillas may be characterized by higher rates of growth. Finally, data demonstrate lowland and mountain gorilla females do not differ significantly in adult body size, but mountain gorilla males are significantly larger than lowland gorilla males, suggesting mountain gorillas are characterized by a higher degree of sexual dimorphism in body size. Thus, although lowland and mountain gorillas do not appear to have evolved novel adaptations of the postcranium which correlate with differences in locomotor behavior, the present investigation establishes subspecies differences in ontogeny and sexual dimorphism which may be linked with ecological variation. Specifically, these findings are evaluated in the context of risk aversion models which predict higher growth rates and increased levels of sexual dimorphism in extreme folivores. Am. J. Seasonal variation in prey consumption and food resource overlap was evident in an inland water body for mature male, mature female and immature inland silverside (Menidia beryllina). During the first growth phase marked by intensive somatic growth by immature inland silverside, few adults were present in the population (28% of total catch), thus minimizing intraspecific competition for food resources between juvenile and adult inland silverside. During the second growth phase by adults, few juvenile inland silverside were present (0% of total catch) in the population, again minimizing intraspecific competition for food resources between juvenile and adult inland silverside. A divergence in food resource overlap was observed when mature male, mature female and immature inland silverside were present in the population. These population‐level demographic responses to energy acquisition are likely necessary to maximize individual growth of mature male, mature female and immature inland silverside.  相似文献

The mechanisms that are responsible for the extension of lifespan in the mouse with targeted disruption (knockout [KO]) of the growth hormone (GH) receptor/binding protein (GHR-KO) are unknown. However, in the long-living Ames dwarf mouse, blood glucose and body core temperature (Tco) are consistently lower than in normal mice. In addition, insulin levels are reduced and corticosterone levels are elevated in male dwarfs. These functional alterations, similar to those seen in animals under caloric restriction, have not been proven to be causally related to the extension of lifespan, but they do provide some insight into what traits may be necessary for long life. Therefore, to investigate which of these parameters are similarly affected in two genetically unrelated, yet similarly long-living mouse models, we measured Tco, thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine [T3] and thyroxine [T4]), and insulin, in addition to morning and afternoon levels of glucose and corticosterone, in young adult male and/or female GHR-KO mice and their normal siblings. Tco in GHR-KO mice was numerically reduced throughout the 24-hr period; however, these differences were only significant 4 hr prior to lights-off (14:00 hr), immediately after lights-off (18:00 hr), and during the 3 hr preceding lights on (03:00 to 06:00 hr). GHR-KO mice had significantly reduced levels of T3 and T4, while the ratio of these hormones was similar to that in normal mice. Insulin levels in GHR-KO mice were lower than in normal mice; levels in male GHR-KO mice were below the detectable limits of the assay used. Glucose levels in GHR-KO mice (male and females) were lower than in normal mice in measurements taken in both morning and afternoon; however, these differences arose from consistent reductions in males, as morning glucose levels in GHR-KO females were similar to those of normal mice. Corticosterone levels measured in blood plasma collected under basal (nonstressed) conditions showed sex-related alterations. Basal corticosterone levels in female GHR-KO mice were similar to normal females, while those in male GHR-KO mice were higher than in normal males in the afternoon. Corticosterone levels in stressed GHR-KO females were similar to those measured in stressed normal females. These data show that the long-living GHR-KO mouse shares a reduction in glucose, insulin, thyroid hormones, and Tco with the Ames dwarf mouse. Reductions in these parameters may be important to the underlying mechanisms of delayed aging in these animals.  相似文献

Summary An experiment was conducted to study the maternal and fetal effects of the sex-linked gene tortoise on litter size, birth weight, body weight from birth to 30-day of age, and mortality in normal (N) and mutant (M) mice (Mus musculus). The experiment involved two mating types: (1) N x N (dam x sire) which produced normal male and normal female offspring and (2) M X N which produced mutant males that died in utero, mutant females and normal male and female offspring. Comparison 1 consisted of all phenotypically normal male and female offspring from both N X N and M X N mating types born in 2 parities. The data supports the hypothesis that the tortoise gene, when present in the dam, did not significantly affect the body weight of normal progeny prior to 18 days old. There is also evidence for a negative maternal effect of the tortoise gene on body weight from 21 to 30 days of age postpartum. Mating type X parity interaction was not significant prior to 9 day postpartum. Sex of mice did not influence body weight of siblings prior to 18 day old, but males were heavier than females there-after. Normal and mutant females born in six parities from the M X N mating type constituted Comparison 2. The birth weight of the offspring in Comparison 2 was not significantly influenced by the presence of the tortoise gene. All other body weight measurements, however, were lower for mutant females when compared to normal females. Parity affected all body weight measurements in both comparisons. Mortality rate of the offspring was not influenced by parental mating type or parity, but sex differences were observed. Mutant females had higher mortality than normal sisters. This study provides evidence that the mottled locus in the tortoise dam and progeny influences growth and survival.Reference to a company and/or product named by the USDA is only for purposes of information and does not imply approval or recommendation of the product to the exclusion of others  相似文献

Abstract. For simultaneous hermaphrodites, a male-to-female shift in sex allocation with growth, and weak sexual selection on the male function, is predicted by many theories, although empirical data for both predictions are insufficient for internally fertilizing hermaphrodites with nonreciprocal mating. To address these issues, I studied mating and egg-laying behavior of the sea hare, Aplysia kurodai (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia) in the laboratory. Both frequency and duration of egg laying increased with body weight, indicating that fecundity increased with weight. On the other hand, frequency and duration of mating as males did not increase with body weight, suggesting that sperm usage was independent of weight. Therefore, sex allocation shifted from male to female functions with growth. The lack of a relationship between body weight and mating activities as males also suggests that there was no "female" choice for large partners. However, the frequency of mating as females increased with body weight, suggesting "male" choice for large partners. This "male" choice is further supported by the presence of size-assortative mating and a longer duration of mating when the female partner was large. In addition, the variance in mating frequency as females was larger than that as males. As a whole, the mating behavior in A. kurodai can be summarized as choosy as males and unchoosy as females, the opposite of the patterns known in most gonochoric and hermaphroditic animals.  相似文献

Food limitation is expected to reduce an individual’s body condition (body mass scaled to body size) and cause a trade-off between growth and other fitness-related traits, such as immunity. We tested the condition-dependence of growth and disease resistance in male and female Gryllus texensis field crickets by manipulating diet quality via nutrient content for their entire life and then subjecting individuals to a host resistance test using the live bacterium Serratia marcescens. As predicted, crickets on a high-quality diet eclosed more quickly, and at a larger body size and mass. Crickets on a high-quality diet were not in better condition at the time of eclosion, but they were in better condition 7–11 days after eclosion, with females also being in better condition than males. Despite being in better condition, however, females provided with a high-quality diet had significantly poorer disease resistance than females on a low-quality diet and in poor condition. Similarly, males on low- and high-quality diets did not differ in their disease resistance, despite differing in their body condition. A sex difference in disease resistance under diet-restriction suggests that females might allocate resources toward immunity during development if they expect harsh environmental conditions as an adult or it might suggest that females allocate resources toward other life history activities (i.e. reproduction) when food availability increases. We do not know what immune effectors were altered under diet-restriction to increase disease resistance, but our findings suggest that increased immune function might provide an explanation for the sexually-dimorphic increase in longevity generally observed in diet-restricted animals.  相似文献

The evolutionary origin of the long neck of giraffes is enigmatic. One theory (the 'sexual selection' theory) is that their shape evolved because males use their necks and heads to achieve sexual dominance. Support for this theory would be that males invest more in neck and head growth than do females. We have investigated this hypothesis in 17 male and 21 female giraffes with body masses ranging from juvenile to mature animals, by measuring head mass, neck mass, neck and leg length and the neck length to leg length ratio. We found no significant differences in any of these dimensions between males and females of the same mass, although mature males, whose body mass is significantly (50%) greater than that of mature females, do have significantly heavier (but not longer) necks and heavier heads than mature females. We conclude that morphological differences between males and females are minimal, that differences that do exist can be accounted for by the larger final mass of males and that sexual selection is not the origin of a long neck in giraffes.  相似文献

Galanin-like peptide (GALP) has been implicated in the neuroendocrine regulation of both feeding and reproduction. In male rodents and primates, intracerebroventricular (icv) infusions of GALP stimulate luteinizing hormone (LH) release, induce Fos expression in brain areas implicated in feeding and reproduction, and affect food intake and body weight in rodents. In gonad-intact and castrated male rats, icv administration of GALP also stimulates male sexual behavior. While the effects of GALP on male physiology and behavior are well documented, no studies have addressed such a role of GALP in females. We tested the effects of icv GALP infusions on LH release, locomotor activity, motor control, and body weight regulation in adult ovariectomized female mice hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate and progesterone. In addition, sexually-experienced male and female mice were treated with GALP and tested for sexual behavior. In females, GALP reduced open-field locomotor activity, the ability to maintain grip on an accelerating rotarod, and 24-h body weight in a dose-dependent manner. GALP also increased LH secretion in female mice, an effect that was blocked by pre-treatment with Antide, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) type-1 receptor antagonist. GALP infusions slightly decreased the occurrence of lordosis behavior in female mice and significantly increased the latencies with which females displayed receptivity. Unlike previous reports in male rats, GALP inhibited male sexual behavior in mice. Our data indicate that in female mice, GALP stimulates LH release via GnRH, and decreases body weight, motor control, and locomotor activity via GnRH-independent pathways. Furthermore, our sexual behavior and locomotor findings suggest species-specific differences in the mechanism and/or location of GALP action in the brains of rats and mice.  相似文献

Recent awareness of cardiovascular diseases as a number one killer of the middle-aged women has prompted interest in sex differences leading to heart failure (HF). Therefore, we evaluated cardiac function in female and male mice following myocardial infarction (MI) using the Millar pressure-volume (P-V) conductance system in vivo, at time points corresponding to early (2 wk), late compensatory hypertrophy (4 wk), and decompensation (10 wk) to HF. A significant deterioration of the load dependent and independent hemodynamic measurements occurred in both female and male mice during the early phase of hypertrophy. Later, compensatory hypertrophy was marked by a normalization of volumes to control levels in females compared with males. The most notable differences between sexes occurred in the measurements of cardiac contractility during the decompensation to HF. In females, there was a significant improvement in contractility compared with males, which was apparent in the load-independent measurements of preload recruitable stroke work (10 wk post-MI, female=48.7+/-8.0 vs. male=25.2+/-1.8 mmHg, P<0.05) and maximum dP/dt vs. maximum end-diastolic volume (10 wk post-MI, female=359+/-58 vs. male=149+/-28 mmHg.s(-1).microl(-1), P<0.05). Despite these differences, there were no differences in the heart weight to body weight ratio and infarct size between the sexes. These data demonstrate that compensatory hypertrophy is associated with an improvement in contractility and a delayed decompensation to HF in females. However, compensatory hypertrophy in males appears to be undermined by a steady decline in contractility associated with decompensation to HF.  相似文献

Effect of administration of different doses (0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 g/kg, twice daily, po) of a polyherbal preparation, OB-200G and fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, ip) for 21 days was studied on food intake and body weight in male and female Laka mice. The study further investigated the effect of administration of 0.5 g/kg dose of OB-200G for 40 days on body weight, fat pad weights, locomotor activity and biochemical parameters in monosodium glutamate (MSG)-treated male and female Wistar rat pups. Administration of OB-200G produced dose dependent decrease in body weight in both male and female mice. On the other hand, fluoxetine decreased body weight only in female mice. The food intake was significantly (P < 0.05) increased in both fasted male and female mice after treatment with the lower dose (0.25 g/kg, po) of OB-200G. However, significant (P < 0.05) decrease in food intake was recorded with the administration of higher doses (0.5, 1 and 2 g/kg, po) of OB-200G and fluoxetine in fasted female mice on day 1, 7, 14 and 21. But in male mice differential effect on food intake was recorded at different doses on day 1, 7, 14 and 21. Further, OB-200G administration significantly (P < 0.05) decreased body weight and fat pad weights, increased serum glucose levels and ambulatory activity in MSG-treated female rats but not in MSG-treated male rats. The results suggest that OB-200G involves gender differences in mediating its antiobesity effect and may supplement the current armamentarium for the treatment of obesity.  相似文献

Summary In sexually dimorphic animals, large male body size is often associated with direct interference competition among males for access to females or resources used in reproduction. In constrast, small male body size may be associated with indirect scramble competition among males for temporal or spatial access to females. Minute, “parasitic” males of the acrothoracican barnacleTrypetesa lampas (Hancock) appear to compete with one another for permanent attachment sites on the external body of the female. Several spatial patterns suggest indirect male-male competition: 1) males were consistently aggregated on the anterior surface of the female ovarian disc; 2) the average distance from attached males to the site of insemination correlated positively with local male density; 3) average male body size on a female decreased as a function of male density; 4) the distribution of males on the left and right hand sides of the female ovarian disc was more even than expected, suggesting that males avoided crowded settlement sites. The number of males attached to a female increased with female body size and matched a null model in which males colonized female “targets” of differing areas. These results suggest that competition between males primarily affected settlement sites and male body sizes within, rather than among, females. Male parasitism may have evolved through both sexual selection for efficient access to females (Ghiselin 1974) and natural selection for reduced burrow density in a space-limited habitat (Turner and Yakovlev 1983).  相似文献

Abstract: Incomplete population counts indicate change in population sizes when constant proportionality holds, a condition that is rarely met. However, researchers have not explored whether constant proportionality holds for a segment of a population. I examined whether the female segment (juv, subadult M, subadult and ad F) of a Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) population displayed constant proportionality. When most food is in particular habitats, females of polygynous species should use that habitat frequently, even when food is limited, because they are more familiar with food distribution and abundance than males. I obtained counts of elk and tallies of naturally marked animals from vehicle surveys of a population inhabiting a landscape where forage was in meadows that were interspersed in closed-canopied forest. I conducted population surveys in January or February and estimated population size with Bowden's mark-resight estimator. Population size estimates declined from 130 in 1997 to 37 in 2006. The proportion of the population counted during surveys was inversely related to population size estimates. Estimated population sizes were inversely related to male (r2 = 0.56) but not female sighting probabilities (r2 = 0.004), which were ≥0.9. Constant proportionality in counts held for only the female segment of the population. Counts of the female segment of the population can inform managers about changes in this segment of the population over time.  相似文献
