Dynamic gait stability can be quantified by the relationship of the motion state (i.e. the position and velocity) between the body center of mass (COM) and its base of support (BOS). Humans learn how to adaptively control stability by regulating the absolute COM motion state (i.e. its position and velocity) and/or by controlling the BOS (through stepping) in a predictable manner, or by doing both simultaneously following an external perturbation that disrupts their regular relationship. Post repeated-slip perturbation training, for instance, older adults learned to forward shift their COM position while walking with a reduced step length, hence reduced their likelihood of slip-induced falls. How and to what extent each individual joint influences such adaptive alterations is mostly unknown. A three-dimensional individualized human kinematic model was established. Based on the human model, sensitivity analysis was used to systematically quantify the influence of each lower limb joint on the COM position relative to the BOS and the step length during gait. It was found that the leading foot had the greatest effect on regulating the COM position relative to the BOS; and both hips bear the most influence on the step length. These findings could guide cost-effective but efficient fall-reduction training paradigm among older population.  相似文献

Predicted threshold against backward balance loss following a slip in gait   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The purpose of this study was to use a 7-link, moment-actuated human model to predict, at liftoff of the trailing foot in gait, the threshold of the center of mass (COM) velocity relative to the base of support (BOS) required to prevent backward balance loss during single stance recovery from a slip. Five dynamic optimization problems were solved to find the minimum COM velocities that would allow the simulation to terminate with the COM above the BOS when the COM started 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 foot lengths behind the heel of the stance foot (i.e., behind the BOS). The initial joint angles of the model were based on averaged data from experimental trials. Foot-ground contact was modeled using 16 visco-elastic springs distributed under the stance foot. Slipping was modeled by setting the sliding coefficient of friction of these springs to 0.02. The forward velocity of the COM necessary to avoid a backward balance loss is nearly two times larger under slip conditions under non-slip conditions. The predicted threshold for backward balance loss following a slip agreed well with experimental data collected from 99 young adults in response to 927 slips during walking. In all trials in which a subject's COM had a velocity below the predicted threshold, the subject's recovery foot landed posterior to the slipping foot as predicted. Finally, combining experimental data with optimization, we verified that the 7-link model could more accurately predict gait stability than a 2-link model.  相似文献

While there has been much research on adults' abilities to detect deception, there have been very few studies examining both children's and adults' abilities to detect children's real, spontaneous lies. The present study asked both children and adults to make judgments of children's true and false reports. Participants (N = 156) were shown videotaped sessions of children who were either spontaneously lying or telling the truth. Results indicate that both children's and adults' accuracy for detecting children's true statements was below chance. However, older children were significantly better at detecting lies than both younger children and adults.  相似文献

Falls are prevalent in older adults. Dynamic stability of body center of mass (COM) is critical for maintaining balance. A simple yet accurate tool to evaluate COM kinematics is essential to examine the COM stability. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the COM position derived from body segmental analysis can be approximated by a single (sacral) marker during unperturbed (regular walking) and perturbed (gait-slip) gait. One hundred eighty seven older adults experienced an unexpected slip after approximately 10 regular walking trials. Two trials, the slip trial and the preceding regular walking trial, monitored with a motion capture system and force plates, were included in the present study. The COM positions were calculated by using the segmental analysis method wherein, the COM of all body segments was calculated to further estimate the body COM position. These body COM positions were then compared with those of the sacral marker placed at the second sacral vertebra for both trials. Results revealed that the COM positions were highly correlated with those of the sacrum׳s over the time intervals investigated for both walking (coefficient of correlation R>0.97) and slip (R>0.90) trials. There were detectable kinematic difference between the COM and the sacral for both trials. Our results indicated that the sacral marker can be used as a simple approximation of body COM for regular walking, and to somewhat a lesser extent, upon a slip. The benefits from the simplicity appear to overweigh the limitations in accuracy.  相似文献

Clinical locomotor research seeks to facilitate adaptation or retention of new walking patterns by providing feedback. Within a split-belt treadmill paradigm, sagittal plane feedback improves adaptation but does not affect retention. Representation of error in this manner is cognitively demanding. However, it is unknown in this paradigm how frontal plane feedback, which may utilize a unique learning process, impacts locomotor adaptation. Frontal plane movement feedback has been shown to impact retention of novel running mechanics but has yet to be evaluated in gait conditions widely applicable within neurorehabilitation, such as walking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of frontal plane mirror feedback on gait adaptation and retention during split-belt treadmill walking. Forty healthy young adults were divided into two groups: one group received mirror feedback during the first split-belt exposure and the other received no mirror feedback. Individuals in the mirror feedback group were asked to look at their legs in the mirror, but no further instructions were given. Individuals with mirror feedback displayed more symmetric stance time during the first strides of adaptation and maintained this pattern into the second split-belt exposure when no feedback was provided. Individuals with mirror feedback also demonstrated more symmetric double support time upon returning to normal walking. Lastly, the mirror feedback also allowed individuals to walk with smaller gait variability during the final steps of both split-belt exposures. Overall, mirror feedback allowed individuals to reduce their stance time asymmetry and led to a more consistent adapted pattern, suggesting this type of feedback may have utility in gait training that targets symmetry and consistency in movement.  相似文献

Falls among the older population can severely restrict their functional mobility and even cause death. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms and conditions that cause falls, for which it is important to develop a predictive model of falls. One critical quantity for postural instability detection and prediction is the instantaneous stability of quiet upright stance based on motion data. However, well-established measures in the field of motor control that quantify overall postural stability using center-of-pressure (COP) or center-of-mass (COM) fluctuations are inadequate predictors of instantaneous stability. For this reason, 2D COP/COM virtual-time-to-contact (VTC) is investigated to detect the postural stability deficits of healthy older people compared to young adults. VTC predicts the temporal safety margin to the functional stability boundary ( =  limits of the region of feasible COP or COM displacement) and, therefore, provides an index of the risk of losing postural stability. The spatial directions with increased instability were also determined using quantities of VTC that have not previously been considered. Further, Lempel-Ziv-Complexity (LZC), a measure suitable for on-line monitoring of stability/instability, was applied to explore the temporal structure or complexity of VTC and the predictability of future postural instability based on previous behavior. These features were examined as a function of age, vision and different load weighting on the legs. The primary findings showed that for old adults the stability boundary was contracted and VTC reduced. Furthermore, the complexity decreased with aging and the direction with highest postural instability also changed in aging compared to the young adults. The findings reveal the sensitivity of the time dependent properties of 2D VTC to the detection of postural instability in aging, availability of visual information and postural stance and potential applicability as a predictive model of postural instability during upright stance.  相似文献

Aging is a critical factor to influence the functional performance during daily life. Without an appropriate posture control response when experiencing an unexpected external perturbation, fall may occur. A novel six-degree-of freedom platform with motion control protocol was designed to provide a real-life simulation of unexpected disturbance in order to discriminate the age-related changes of the balance control and the recovery ability. Twenty older adults and 20 healthy young adults participated in the study. The subjects stood barefoot on the novel movable platform, data of the center of mass (COM) excursion, joint rotation angle and electromyography (EMG) were recorded and compared. The results showed that the older adults had similar patterns of joint movement and COM excursion as the young adults during the balance reactive-recovery. However, larger proximal joint rotation in elderly group induced larger COM sway envelop and therefore loss of the compensatory strategy of posture recovery. The old adults also presented a lower muscle power. In order to keep an adequate joint stability preventing from falling, the EMG activity was increased, but the asymmetric pattern might be the key reason of unstable postural response. This novel design of moveable platform and test protocol comprised the computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) demonstrate its value to assess the possible sensory, motor, and central adaptive impairments to balance control and could be the training tool for posture inability person.  相似文献

Treadmill has been broadly used in laboratory and rehabilitation settings for the purpose of facilitating human locomotion analysis and gait training. The objective of this study was to determine whether dynamic gait stability differs or resembles between the two walking conditions (overground vs. treadmill) among young adults. Fifty-four healthy young adults (age: 23.9 ± 4.7 years) participated in this study. Each participant completed five trials of overground walking followed by five trials of treadmill walking at a self-selected speed while their full body kinematics were gathered by a motion capture system. The spatiotemporal gait parameters and dynamic gait stability were compared between the two walking conditions. The results revealed that participants adopted a “cautious gait” on the treadmill compared with over ground in response to the possible inherent challenges to balance imposed by treadmill walking. The cautious gait, which was achieved by walking slower with a shorter step length, less backward leaning trunk, shortened single stance phase, prolonged double stance phase, and more flatfoot landing, ensures the comparable dynamic stability between the two walking conditions. This study could provide insightful information about dynamic gait stability control during treadmill ambulation in young adults.  相似文献

Theoretical studies and robotic experiments have shown that asymptotically stable periodic walking may emerge from nonlinear limit-cycle oscillators in the neuro-mechanical periphery. We recently reported entrainment of human gait to periodic mechanical perturbations with two essential features: 1) entrainment occurred only when the perturbation period was close to the original (preferred) walking period, and 2) entrainment was always accompanied by phase locking so that the perturbation occurred at the end of the double-stance phase. In this study, we show that a highly-simplified state-determined walking model can reproduce several salient nonlinear limit-cycle behaviors of human walking: 1) periodic gait that is 2) asymptotically stable; 3) entrainment to periodic mechanical perturbations only when the perturbation period is close to the model''s unperturbed period; and 4) phase-locking to locate the perturbation at the end of double stance. Importantly, this model requires neither supra-spinal control nor an intrinsic self-sustaining neural oscillator such as a rhythmic central pattern generator. Our results suggest that several prominent limit-cycle features of human walking may stem from simple afferent feedback processes without significant involvement of supra-spinal control or a self-sustaining oscillatory neural network.  相似文献

Infant facial features are typically perceived as “cute,” provoking caretaking behaviours. Previous research has focused on adults' perceptions of baby cuteness, and examined how these perceptions are influenced by events of the adult reproductive lifespan, such as ovulation and menopause. However, globally, individuals of all ages, including pre-pubertal children, provide notable proportions of infant care. In this study, we recruited participants in and around northern England, and tested 330 adults and 65 children aged 7–9 using a forced-choice paradigm to assess preferences for infant facial cuteness in two stimulus sets and (as a control task) preferences for femininity in women's faces. We analysed the data with Hierarchical Bayesian Regression Models. The adults and children successfully identified infants who had been manipulated to appear cuter, although children's performance was poorer than adults' performance, and children reliably identified infant cuteness in only one of the two infant stimuli sets. Children chose the feminised over masculinised women's faces as more attractive, although again their performance was poorer than adults' performance. There was evidence for a female advantage in the tasks: girls performed better than boys when assessing the woman stimuli and one of the infant stimulus sets, and women performed better than men when assessing one of the infant stimulus sets. There was no evidence that cuteness judgements differed depending upon exposure to infants (children with siblings aged 0–2; adults with a baby caregiving role), or depending upon being just younger or older than the average age of menopause. Children and grandparents provide notable portions of infant caretaking globally, and cuteness perceptions could direct appropriate caregiving behaviour in these age groups, as well as in adults of reproductive age.  相似文献

Accurate knowledge of the isolated contributions of joint movements to the three-dimensional displacement of the center of mass (COM) is fundamental for understanding the kinematics of normal walking and for improving the treatment of gait disabilities. Saunders et al. (1953) identified six kinematic mechanisms to explain the efficient progression of the whole-body COM in the sagittal, transverse, and coronal planes. These mechanisms, referred to as the major determinants of gait, were pelvic rotation, pelvic list, stance knee flexion, foot and knee mechanisms, and hip adduction. The aim of the present study was to quantitatively assess the contribution of each major gait determinant to the anteroposterior, vertical, and mediolateral displacements of the COM over one gait cycle. The contribution of each gait determinant was found by applying the concept of an ‘influence coefficient’, wherein the partial derivative of the COM displacement with respect to a prescribed determinant was calculated. The analysis was based on three-dimensional measurements of joint angular displacements obtained from 23 healthy young adults walking at slow, normal and fast speeds. We found that hip flexion, stance knee flexion, and ankle-foot interaction (comprised of ankle plantarflexion, toe flexion and the displacement of the center of pressure) are the major determinants of the displacements of the COM in the sagittal plane, while hip adduction and pelvic list contribute most significantly to the mediolateral displacement of the COM in the coronal plane. Pelvic rotation and pelvic list contribute little to the vertical displacement of the COM at all walking speeds. Pelvic tilt, hip rotation, subtalar inversion, and back extension, abduction and rotation make negligible contributions to the displacements of the COM in all three anatomical planes.  相似文献

Can the center of mass (COM) motion state, i.e., its position and velocity relative to the base of support (BOS), which dictate gait stability, be predictably controlled by the global gait parameters of step length and gait speed, or by extension, cadence? The precise relationships among step length and gait speed, and the COM motion state are unknown, partially due to the interdependence between step length and gait speed and the difficulty in independent control of both parameters during spontaneous level walking. The purposes of this study were to utilize simultaneous audio-visual cuing to independently manipulate step length and gait speed, and to determine the extent to which the COM position and velocity can be subsequently controlled. Fifty-six young adults were trained at one of the three gait patterns in which both the step length and gait speed were targeted simultaneously. The results showed that the cuing could successfully “decouple” gait speed from step length. Although this approach did yield reliable control of the COM velocity through manipulation of gait speed (R2=0.97), the manipulation of step length yielded less precise control of COM position (R2=0.60). This latter control appears to require manipulation of an additional degree-of-freedom at the local segment level, such that the inclusion of trunk inclination with step length improved the prediction of COM position (R2=0.80).  相似文献

A vital functional plasticity of humans is their ability to adapt to threats to posture stability. The purpose of this study was to investigate adaptation to repeated trips in walking. Sixteen young adults were recruited and exposed to the sudden (electronic-mechanical) release of an obstacle, 11-cm in height, in the path of over ground walking during the mid-to-late left swing phase. Although none of the subjects fell on the first of eight unannounced, consecutive trips, all of them had to rely on compensatory step with a step length significantly longer than their regular to reduce their instability. In the subsequent trials, they were able to rapidly make adaptive adjustments in the control of their center-of-mass (COM) stability both proactively and reactively (i.e., before and after hitting or crossing the obstacle), such that the need for taking compensatory step was substantially diminished. The proactive adaptations included a reduced forward COM velocity that lessened forward instability in mid-to-late stance and an elevated toe clearance that reduced the likelihood of obstacle contact. The reactive adjustments were characterized by improved trunk control (by reducing its forward rotation) and limb support (by increasing hip height), and reduced forward instability (by both the posterior COM shift and the reduction in its forward velocity). These findings suggest that young adults can adapt appropriately to repeated trip perturbations and to reduce trip-induced excessive instability in both proactive and reactive manners.  相似文献

The purpose of the work was to determine whether the age-related muscle weakness diminishes older adults’ ability to use mechanisms responsible for maintaining dynamic stability after forward falls. Nine older and nine younger adults participated in this study. To analyse the capacities of the leg-extensor muscle–tendon units, all subjects performed isometric maximal voluntary plantarflexion and knee extension contractions on a dynamometer. The elongation of the gastrocnemius medialis and the vastus lateralis tendon and aponeuroses during isometric contraction was examined by ultrasonography. Recovery behaviour was determined after a sudden fall from two forward-inclined lean angles. Compared to older adults, younger adults had higher muscle strength and tendon stiffness. Younger adults created a higher margin of stability compared to older, independent of perturbation intensity. The main mechanism improving the margin of dynamic stability was the increase of the base of support. The results, further, demonstrated that the locomotion strategy employed before touchdown affects the stability of the stance phase and that muscle strength and tendon stiffness contributed significantly to stability control. We concluded that, to reduce the risk of falls, older individuals may benefit from muscle–tendon unit strengthening programs as well as from interventions exercising the mechanisms responsible for dynamic stability.  相似文献

The purpose of this pilot study was to establish the efficacy and feasibility of a single-session treadmill-based stance-slip perturbation program on preventing slip-related falls while walking over the ground among young adults. Two groups (training vs. control) of healthy young participants were respectively exposed to a treadmill-based stance-slip perturbation training protocol and a placebo training protocol. Post training, both groups experienced an unexpected overground gait-slip. Our results indicated that 28.6% of individuals in the training group and 55.0% of controls fell when responding to the overground slip. In comparison with the control group, the training group exhibited better control over the compensatory step and dynamic stability at the instant immediately prior to recovery touchdown. The improved dynamic stability control in the training group likely resulted from the enhanced capability of harnessing the slip kinematics of the base of support. Dynamic stability did not display any significant group-associated difference at slipping foot touchdown and recovery foot liftoff. This implies that a stance-slip perturbation training protocol with eight slips may not provide enough and very task-specific incentive to the Central Nervous System to form the capability of sufficiently modifying regular gait pattern after an unexpected gait slip. However, given its ease of use, stance-perturbation could be a practical option to train individuals in clinical settings as a simple push or pull could exert a perturbation to a standing individual. The findings from this study provide information for developing future studies based on large-scale samples.  相似文献

The biomechanical mechanism of lateral trunk lean gait employed to reduce external knee adduction moment (KAM) for knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients is not well known. This mechanism may relate to the center of mass (COM) motion. Moreover, lateral trunk lean gait may affect motor control of the COM displacement. Uncontrolled manifold (UCM) analysis is an evaluation index used to understand motor control and variability of the motor task. Here we aimed to clarify the biomechanical mechanism to reduce KAM during lateral trunk lean gait and how motor variability controls the COM displacement. Twenty knee OA patients walked under two conditions: normal and lateral trunk lean gait conditions. UCM analysis was performed with respect to the COM displacement in the frontal plane. We also determined how the variability is structured with regards to the COM displacement as a performance variable. The peak KAM under lateral trunk lean gait was lower than that under normal gait. The reduced peak KAM observed was accompanied by medially shifted knee joint center, shortened distance of the center of pressure to knee joint center, and shortened distance of the knee–ground reaction force lever arm during the stance phase. Knee OA patients with lateral trunk lean gait could maintain kinematic synergy by utilizing greater segmental configuration variance to the performance variable. However, the COM displacement variability of lateral trunk lean gait was larger than that of normal gait. Our findings may provide clinical insights to effectively evaluate and prescribe gait modification training for knee OA patients.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate and compare the predictive power of falls for a battery of stability indices, obtained during normal walking among community-dwelling older adults. One hundred and eighty seven community-dwelling older adults participated in the study. After walking regularly for 20 strides on a walkway, participants were subjected to an unannounced slip during gait under the protection of a safety harness. Full body kinematics and kinetics were monitored during walking using a motion capture system synchronized with force plates. Stability variables, including feasible-stability-region measurement, margin of stability, the maximum Floquet multiplier, the Lyapunov exponents (short- and long-term), and the variability of gait parameters (including the step length, step width, and step time), were calculated for each subject. Sensitivity of predicting slip outcome (fall vs. recovery) was examined for each stability variable using logistic regression. Results showed that the feasible-stability-region measurement predicted fall incidence among these subjects with the highest sensitivity (68.4%). Except for the step width (with an sensitivity of 60.2%), no other stability variables could differentiate fallers from those who did not fall for the sample included in this study. The findings from the present study could provide guidance to identify individuals at increased risk of falling using the feasible-stability-region measurement or variability of the step width.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of gait speed on the control of mediolateral dynamic stability during gait initiation. Thirteen healthy young adults initiated gait at three self-selected speeds: Slow, Normal and Fast. The results indicated that the duration of anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) decreased from Slow to Fast, i.e. the time allocated to propel the centre of mass (COM) towards the stance-leg side was shortened. Likely as an attempt at compensation, the peak of the anticipatory centre of pressure (COP) shift increased. However, COP compensation was not fully efficient since the results indicated that the mediolateral COM shift towards the stance-leg side at swing foot-off decreased with gait speed. Consequently, the COM shift towards the swing-leg side at swing heel-contact increased from Slow to Fast, indicating that the mediolateral COM fall during step execution increased as gait speed rose. However, this increased COM fall was compensated by greater step width so that the margin of stability (the distance between the base-of-support boundary and the mediolateral component of the “extrapolated centre of mass”) at heel-contact remained unchanged across the speed conditions. Furthermore, a positive correlation between the mediolateral extrapolated COM position at heel-contact and step width was found, indicating that the greater the mediolateral COM fall, the greater the step width. Globally, these results suggest that mediolateral APA and step width are modulated with gait speed so as to maintain equivalent mediolateral dynamical stability at the time of swing heel-contact.  相似文献

Research examining age-related changes in dynamic stability during stepping has recognised the importance of the restabilisation phase, subsequent to foot-contact. While regulation of the net ground reaction force (GRFnet) line of action is believed to influence dynamic stability during steady-state locomotion, such control during restabilisation remains unknown. This work explored the origins of age-related decline in mediolateral dynamic stability by examining the line of action of GRFnet relative to the centre of mass (COM) during restabilisation following voluntary stepping. Healthy younger and older adults (n=20 per group) performed three single-step tasks (varying speed and step placement), altering the challenge to stability control. Age-related differences in magnitude and intertrial variability of the angle of divergence of GRFnet line of action relative to the COM were quantified, along with the peak mediolateral and vertical GRFnet components. The angle of divergence was further examined at discrete points during restabilisation, to uncover events of potential importance to stability control. Older adults exhibited a reduced angle of divergence throughout restabilisation. Temporal and spatial constraints on stepping increased the magnitude and intertrial variability of the angle of divergence, although not differentially among the older adults. Analysis of the time-varying angle of divergence revealed age-related reductions in magnitude, with increases in timing and intertrial timing variability during the later phase of restabilisation. This work further supports the idea that age-related challenges in lateral stability control emerge during restabilisation. Age-related alterations during the later phase of restabilisation may signify challenges with reactive control.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to investigate the response of healthy older and young adults to a change in step direction from a forward to a lateral target in response to a sensory perturbation. Nine healthy older (75.1 ± 6.7 years; age range, 65–81 years) and nine young adults (27 ± 3.6 years; age range, 23–31 years) participated in the study. The sensory perturbation was a visual cue presented at random times while subjects stepped over an obstacle from quiet stance. For both young and elderly subjects there was an abrupt change in the slope of both shear ground reaction forces (GRFs) of the stance limb following the perturbation. The slope and peak of the change in GRFs was greater for the young subjects and the onset significantly earlier (205 ms compared to 271 ms). Changes in the GRFs were accompanied by an increase in bilateral gluteus medius and stance limb soleus activity. A late visual cue resulted in a delayed response for elderly subjects. These data show that a stepping response to a sensory perturbation was both delayed and of less magnitude for older adults which has implications for fall risk.  相似文献
