Two experiments were carried out to determine the effectiveness of steers and heifers, treated with oestrogen or testosterone, in the detection of oestrus in cattle. In the first experiment 17 steers castrated at birth and 16 castrated at 6 months of age were randomly allocated to three groups and received an 800 mg subcutaneous implant of testosterone, subcutaneous injections of 10 mg oestradiol benzoate per week for 16 weeks or no hormone (controls). In addition, six heifers were injected subcutaneously with 10 mg oestradiol benzoate per week for 16 weeks while six untreated heifers served as controls. Animals were observed in a standardised libido test 2, 4, 8, 16, 20 and 24 weeks after treatment commenced. The time to first mount and the number of mounts per animal responding in the presence of oestrous heifers were recorded. Both steers and heifers treated with oestradiol benzoate were superior at detection of oestrus in cattle than animals treated with testosterone or those receiving no hormone. Oestrogen-treated animals generally detected heifers in oestrus in less than 3 min after introduction and mounted these animals between 20 and 30 times in one hour. This response was consistent throughout the duration of the experiment. There was no effect of age at castration of steers on development of male behaviour. The second experiment determined the rate and degree of development of male behaviour in steers in response to weekly subcutaneous injections of 0, 2, 4, 8 or 16 mg oestradiol benzoate per 250 kg body weight, 250 mg testosterone or 150 mg dihydrotestosterone for a period of 15 weeks. Steers treated with oestradiol benzoate again proved to be more successful than untreated or testosterone-treated steers at consistently detecting and mounting oestrous heifers. The best response was obtained from steers treated with 8 mg/250 kg body weight per week. The practical application of this work is discussed.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to determine the effect of length of treatment, stage of cycle at start of treatment and administration of oestradiol benzoate or progesterone at the start of treatment with intravaginal progesterone coils on oestrous response and fertility. In Experiment 1, the number of heifers in oestrus was affected neither by injection of 5 mg oestradiol benzoate alone or with 200 mg progesterone nor by length of treatment. More heifers (P < 0.05) were in oestrus on day 2 after treatment following a 12-day treatment compared to a 9-day treatment. In Experiment 2, heifers between days 17 and 20 of the oestrous cycle received an injection of either 5 mg oestradiol benzoate alone or with 200 mg progesterone at the start of a 9-day treatment with progesterone coils. Neither the number of heifers in oestrus nor the pattern of onset were affected after treatment. In Experiment 3, heifers between days 0 and 3 of the oestrus cycle received progesterone coils for 9, 12 or 14 days. In addition, animals received (i) no further treatment, (ii) a gelatin capsule adhered to the coil containing 10 mg oestradiol benzoate (iii) a gelatin capsule adhered to the coil containing 200 mg progesterone. Following a 9- or 12-day treatment period heifers receiving the coil with the oestrogen capsule had a high oestrous response ( compared to , P < 0.05). When oestrogen was not given, there was a significant linear effect of duration of treatment on the number in oestrus (9 days, ; 12 days ; 14 days, ; P < 0.05).In Experiment 4, post-partum cows were used to compare a 9- and 12-day treatment period and half the animals in each group received either 5 mg oestradiol benzoate and 200 mg progesterone at the start of treatment or a 10 mg gelatin capsule adhered to the coil. The length of treatment affected the number of heifers in oestrus since were in oestrus after a 12-day treatment period compared with after a 9-day period (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the number of cows in oestrus after injection of oestrogen and progesterone ( ) or after the use of the gelatin capsule ( ).  相似文献

The influence of nutrition during the last trimester of pregnancy and the early postpartum period on postpartum LH secretion was evaluated in two-year-old Hereford and Simmental heifers maintained on a high or low plane of nutrition (experiment 1) or in Hereford heifers fed a high or low energy (150% vs 100% NRC) ration (experiment 2). Amount of LH released with 10 mg estradiol benzoate (IM) at 14 and 28 days postpartum in experiment 1 or at 14,32,50 and 74 days postpartum in experiment 2 was less (P<.01) for heifers fed the low vs high plane or energy ration and less (P<.05) at 14 days postpartum than at subsequent postpartum periods. The interval from estradiol benzoate injection to the LH peak concentration was longer (P<.05) in Simmental than Hereford heifers, longer (P<.05) in heifers fed the low rather than high energy ration, and longer (P<.01) at 14 days postpartum than at subsequent postpartum periods. The amount of LH released was inversely related to the time required for initiation of the release (r = -.62). Tonic LH secretion was higher (P<.05) in heifers fed the high energy ration and was correlated with average daily gain (r = .75), but was unaffected (P.05) by days postapartum or breed of cattle. Results indicate that increased dietary energy intake increases LH secretion and shortens the anovulatory period in suckled postpartum beef heifers.  相似文献

Estrous female domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) display scent marking (“chinning”) and sexual receptivity. Mating induces ovulation, which occurs approximately 12 h later, and also decreases chinning and receptivity. In the present study, we explored the participation of mating-associated stimuli, ovulation, and the progesterone receptor (PR) in mediating such behavioral effects. We found that copulatory stimuli were not necessary, and that ovulation alone was sufficient, as these behavioral changes were replicated in unmated females by intravenous administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The post-mating administration (s.c.) of 5 μg/day estradiol benzoate (EB), prevented the decline in chinning and receptivity. A lower dose of EB (1 μg/day) had no effect, nor did the antiprogestin RU486 (20 mg, s.c., administered 3 h before mating). However, the combination of a single pre-mating administration of RU486 plus the post-mating administration of 1 μg/day EB completely blocked the decline in estrous behavior. We propose that PR activation around the time of mating and a post-mating decline in ovarian estradiol secretion and/or estradiol responsiveness act in parallel to terminate estrus in this species.  相似文献

In two separate studies, 60 beef heifers (379 kg BW) and 60 beef steers (348 kg BW) were randomly assigned to six treatments in 2×3 factorial arrangements. The treatments were with or without Synovex® implants combined with either a control diet or diets supplemented with 200 ppm Zn from ZnSO4 or zinc methionine (Zn-Met). Near the mid-point of the feeding periods, cattle were vaccinated with a modified live virus and subsequent titers and concentrations of immunoglobulin G (IgG) were measured. Liver and blood samples were obtained 1 week prior to the start of the experiments and at intervals during the experiments. In experiment 1, average daily gains of beef heifers were (P<0.05) affected by the interaction of implant and source of dietary Zn. Compared to control and ZnSO4 treatments, supplementation with Zn-Met increased (P<0.05) the concentration of Zn in serum. Antibody titers and concentrations of IgG in serum were highest (P<0.05) in heifers fed ZnSO4 compared to heifers fed the control or Zn-Met supplemented diets. The Synovex-H® implant reduced the concentrations of Zn and Cu in liver. In experiment 2, Synovex-S® implants improved (P<0.05) weight gains of steers supplemented with 200 ppm dietary Zn from ZnSO4 compared to non-implanted steers. However, the implant had no effect when Zn-Met was the dietary Zn source. The implant increased (P<0.05) concentrations of Zn in liver of steers supplemented with 200 ppm dietary Zn and reduced Zn in liver of steers fed the control diet. Implanted steers had higher (P<0.05) Cu status and IgG concentrations in serum than non-implanted steers. Steers supplemented with either ZnSO4 or Zn-Met had greater (P<0.05) concentrations of Zn in liver and plasma than steers fed the control diet. These results indicate both the level and source of Zn supplementation in diets of feedlot cattle affect their response to growth implants.  相似文献

The induction of sexual receptivity and its maintenance after copulation in ovariectomized female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) was found to be a function of the levels of ovarian hormones administered. Various combinations of estradiol benzoate (between 0.6 and 666 μg) and progesterone (between 0.05 and 5.0 mg) were administered in two experiments. Although some animals responded at 0.6 μg, higher levels of estradiol benzoate (1–6 μg or more) were more effective in inducing levels of lordosis equivalent to those seen in intact females in natural estrus. After mating, a depression in lordosis was observed in both ovariectomized and intact females. However, in ovariectomized females (excluding animals that did not respond initially) the duration of postcopulatory receptivity was a function of the level of progesterone administered. High levels of progesterone tended to prolong slightly the duration of postcopulatory receptivity.  相似文献

The horn fly Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae) is a blood obligate ectoparasite of bovids that causes annual losses to the U.S. beef cattle industry of over US$1.75 billion. Climate warming, the anthropogenic dispersion of bovids and the cross‐breeding of beef cattle with other bovid species may facilitate novel horn fly–host interactions. In particular, hybridizing yaks [Bos grunniens (Artiodactyla: Bovidae)] with beef cows (Bos taurus) for heterosis and carcass improvements may increase the exposure of yak × beef hybrids to horn flies. The present paper reports on the collection of digital images of commingled beef heifers (n = 12) and F1 yak × beef hybrid bovids (heifers, n = 7; steers, n = 5) near Laramie, Wyoming (~ 2200 m a.s.l.) in 2018. The total numbers of horn flies on beef heifers and F1 yak × beef heifers [mean ± standard error (SE): 88 ± 13 and 70 ± 17, respectively] did not differ significantly; however, F1 yak × beef steers had greater total horn fly abundance (mean ± SE: 159 ± 39) than female bovids. The present report of this experiment is the first such report in the literature and suggests that F1 yak × beef bovids are as susceptible as cattle to horn fly parasitism. Therefore, similar monitoring and treatment practices should be adopted by veterinarians, entomologists and producers.  相似文献

The objectives of this trial were to determine the effects of 0.5 mg estradiol benzoate administered intramuscularly 24 h after the removal of progesterone-containing intravaginal devices on the occurrence and timing of estrus, synchronized pregnancy rate and synchronized conception rate in dairy heifers. A clinical trial was conducted involving 750 dairy heifers in 13 herds. Within each herd heifers were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 estrus synchronization treatments. All heifers received a CIDR-B progesterone-containing intravaginal device containing a 10 mg estradiol benzoate capsule for 12 d. Twenty-four hours after CIDR-B removal one group received 0.5 mg, im estradiol benzoate while the other group received an intramuscular injection of a placebo. Estrus detection was performed at 48 and 72 h after intravaginal device removal, and heifers detected in estrus at those times were inseminated. Administration of estradiol benzoate 24 h after removal of CIDR-B devices significantly increased the number of heifers exhibiting estrus within the observation period (96.1 vs 90.5%; P < 0.01). It also altered the onset of estrus so that significantly more heifers were in estrus (86.6 vs 72.3%; P < 0.01) and conceived (47.1 vs 37.5%; P < 0.05) by 48 h after CIDR-B device removal. The synchronized conception rate was unaffected by treatment. The distribution of estrus was such that fixed-time insemination after estrus synchronization with this treatment program may be recommended.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to compare pregnancy rates when GnRH or estradiol were given to synchronize ovarian follicular wave emergence and ovulation in an MGA-based estrus synchronization program. Crossbred beef cattle were fed melengestrol acetate (MGA, 0.5 mg per day) for 7 days (designated days 0-6, without regard to stage of the estrous cycle) and given cloprostenol (PGF; 500 microg intramuscular (im)) on day 7. In Experiment 1, lactating beef cows (n=140) and pubertal heifers (n=40) were randomly allocated to three groups to receive 100 microg gonadorelin (GnRH), 5 mg estradiol-17beta and 100 mg progesterone (E+P) in canola oil or no treatment (control) on day 0. All cattle were observed for estrus every 12 h from 36 to 96 h after PGF. Cattle in the GnRH group that were detected in estrus 36 or 48 h after PGF were inseminated 12 h later; the remainder were given 100 microg GnRH im 72 h after PGF and concurrently inseminated. Cattle in the E+P group were randomly assigned to receive either 0.5 or 1.0 mg estradiol benzoate (EB) in 2 ml canola oil im 24 h after PGF and were inseminated 30 h later. Cattle in the control group were inseminated 12 h after the first detection of estrus; if not in estrus by 72 h after PGF, they were given 100 microg GnRH im and concurrently inseminated. In the absence of significant differences, all data for heifers and for cows were combined and the 0.5 and 1.0 mg EB groups were combined into a single estradiol group. Estrus rates were 57.6, 57.4 and 60.0% for the GnRH, E+P and control groups, respectively (P=0.95). The mean (+/-S.D.) interval from PGF treatment to estrus was shorter (P<0.001) and less variable (P<0.001) in the E+P group (49.0+/-6.1 h) than in either the GnRH (64.2+/-15.9 h) or control (66.3+/-13.3 h) groups. Overall pregnancy rates were higher (P<0.005) in the GnRH (57.6%) and E+P (55.7%) groups than in the control group (30.0%) as were pregnancy rates to fixed-time AI (47.5, 55.7 and 28.3%, respectively). In Experiment 2, 122 crossbred beef heifers were given either 100 microg GnRH or 2 mg EB and 50 mg progesterone in oil on day 0 and subsequently received either 100 microg GnRH 36 h after PGF and inseminated 14 h later or 1 mg EB im 24 h after PGF and inseminated 28 h later in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Pregnancy rates were not significantly different among groups (41.9, 32.2, 33.3 and 36.7% in GnRH/GnRH, GnRH/EB, EB/GnRH and EB/EB groups, respectively). In conclusion, GnRH or estradiol given to synchronize ovarian follicular wave emergence and ovulation in an MGA-based synchronization regimen resulted in acceptable pregnancy rates to fixed-time insemination.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of norgestomet ear implants on progesterone response and estradiol secretion in prepubertal beef heifers. In the first experiment, 47 beef heifers were treated with norgestomet. The implants were implanted subcutaneously for 9 d. After implant removal, blood samples were taken from heifers 2 to 4 d per week for 40 d. Following progesterone determination in jugular venous plasma, heifers were classified according to their progesterone response: 1) no response (Group 1); no rise in progesterone above 1 ng/ml throughout the sampling period; 2) one cycle (Group 2); one increase in progesterone above 1 ng/ml for at least 2 d followed by no further increase in progesterone during the sampling period; and 3) two cycles (Group 3); a rise in progesterone above 1 ng/ml for at least 2 d followed by another cycle of normal duration. Heifers treated with norgestomet were classified as 23 with no response, 9 with 1 cycle and 15 with 2 cycles. Concentrations of estradiol were measured in jugular venous samples on Day 2 after implant removal. Mean concentrations of estradiol were greater in Group 3 than in Group 1 (P < or = 0.01). In Experiment 2, 29 prepubertal beef heifers were assigned randomly to either a 9-d treatment with norgestomet (n = 14) or to serve as untreated controls (n = 15). Blood plasma samples were collected daily from Days 0 to 44 after implant removal. After progesterone determination, heifers were classified as 8 with no response, 4 with 1 cycle and 3 with 2 cycles in the control group, and 5 with no response, 3 with 1 cycle and 6 with 2 cycles in the norgestomet group (frequencies did not differ; P > 0.1). Jugular venous blood plasma was also collected at 4-h intervals from 0 h to 96 h after implant removal and concentrations of estradiol were measured. Patterns of estradiol secretion differed (P < or = 0.05) and overall mean concentrations of estradiol over the first 96 h following implant removal were greater (P < or = 0.01) in norgestomet-treated heifers versus the controls. We conclude that norgestomet can produce a variable progesterone response with heifers with 2 cycles secreting more estradiol. Implants of norgestomet also causes more acute secretion of estradiol in prepubertal beef heifers.  相似文献

In a series of experiments the development of sexual behavior was studied in female rats. Lordosis behavior in response to manual stimulation was induced in 100% of 19-day old females by treatment with 10 μgm estradiol benzoate (EB) and 0.5 mgm progesterone (P) and earwiggling was displayed at earlier ages. During normal development, vaginal opening preceded the display of the first receptivity in most cases, the first two behavioral sex cycles tended to be prolonged and irregular, but the subsequent cycles were of regular 4 or 5 days duration. Although treatment of immature (18-, 23- or 28-day old) females with EB (10 μgm) and P (0.5 mgm) or with EB (0.025, 0.25 or 2.5 μgm until vaginal opening occurred) resulted in precocious vaginal opening and display of sexual receptivity, the treatment did not advance the development of behavioral cyclicity. Progesterone [0.25 mgm/100 gm body weight (bw)] facilitated the display of sexual receptivity in EB-primed (0.5 or 2.5 μgm/100 gm bw) ovariectomized immature and adult female rats. Evidence was presented that behavioral sensitivity to estrogen increases with age.  相似文献

The effects of estradiol benzoate (EB) and estradiol cypionate (EC) on induction of ovulation after a synchronized LH surge and on fertility of Bos indicus females submitted to timed AI (TAI) were evaluated. In Experiment 1, ovariectomized Nelore heifers were used to evaluate the effect of EB (n = 5) and EC (n = 5) on the circulating LH profile. The LH surge timing (19.6 and 50.5 h; P = 0.001), magnitude (20.5 and 9.4 ng/mL; P = 0.005), duration (8.6 and 16.5 h; P = 0.001), and area under the LH curve (158.6 and 339.4 ng/mL; P = 0.01) differed between the EB and EC treatments, respectively. In Experiment 2 (follicular responses; n = 60) and 3 (pregnancy per AI; P/AI; n = 953) suckled Bos indicus beef cows submitted to an estradiol/progesterone-based synchronization protocol were assigned to receive one of two treatments to induce synchronized ovulation: 1 mg of EB im 24 h after progesterone (P4) device removal or 1 mg of EC im at P4 device removal. There was no difference (P > 0.05) between EB and EC treatments on follicular responses (maximum diameter of the ovulatory follicle, 13.1 vs. 13.9 mm; interval from progesterone device removal to ovulation, 70.2 vs. 68.5 h; and ovulation rate, 77.8 vs. 82.8%, respectively). In addition, P/AI was similar (P < 0.22) between the cows treated with EB (57.5%; 277/482) and EC (61.8%; 291/471). In conclusion, despite pharmacologic differences, both esters of estradiol administered either at P4 device removal (EC) or 24 h later (EB) were effective in inducing an LH surge which resulted in synchronized ovulations and similar P/AI in suckled Bos indicus beef cows submitted to TAI.  相似文献

Force-molted White Leghorn laying hens were implanted with 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 3 Compudose 200 pellets (24 mg 17β estradiol/pellet). Plasma estradiol increased with increasing E2 dosages in a linear manner and decreased over time in a quadratic manner (P < 0.01). E2 treatment had a nonlinear effect on total plasma calcium. Oviduct weight, shell thickness and egg weight were not significantly affected by exogenous estradiol whereas tibial bone ash percentage was increased at only one dose (P < 0.05:0.5 pellet group). Physiological supplementation with estradiol does not improve shell quality.  相似文献

The objective was to determine whether eCG in an ovulation synchronization protocol with an intravaginal progesterone (P4)-releasing device (IPRD) containing a low dose of P4 improves pregnancy rate (PR) to fixed-time AI (FTAI) in Bos indicus heifers. Day 0, 2 y old Brahman heifers were allocated to either eCG+ (n = 159) or eCG- (n = 157) treatment groups. All heifers were weighed, body condition scored (BCS), and ultrasonographically examined to measure uterine horn diameter and presence of a CL. On Day 0, all heifers received a low-dose IPRD (0.78 g P4) and 1 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) im. On Day 8, the IPRD was removed, all heifers received 500 μg cloprostenol im, and those in the eCG+ treatment group received 300 IU of eCG im. On Day 9, all heifers received 1 mg EB im. All heifers were FTAI 52 to 56 h after IPRD removal. Ten days after FTAI, heifers were exposed to bulls. Heifers were diagnosed as pregnant to FTAI, natural mating, or not detectably pregnant (NDP) 65 d after FTAI. Treatment with eCG+ as compared to eCG- did not affect PR to FTAI (28.9 vs 30.6%; P = 0.590), natural mating (51.3 vs 47.7%; P = 0.595), or overall (65.4 vs 63.7%; P = 0.872). Mean live weight gain from Days 0 to 65 d post-FTAI was higher in heifers pregnant to FTAI (72.29 ± 4.26 kg; P = 0.033) and overall (66.83 ± 3.65 kg; P = 0.021), compared to heifers that were NDP (60.03 ± 3.16 kg). Uterine diameter group, 9–11, 12–13, and 14–20 mm (26.2, 31.3, and 33.3%; P = 0.256), presence and absence of CL (29.8 vs 29.4%; P = 0.975), AI technicians 1, 2, and 3 (32.6, 28.8, and 22.4%; P = 0.293) and sires A, B, and C (23.9, 36.0 and 27.0%; P = 0.122) had no effect on PR to FTAI, natural mating, or overall. In conclusion, treatment of primarily cycling Brahman heifers with 300 IU eCG in conjunction with a low P4-dose (0.78 g) IPRD and EB to synchronize ovulation, did not improve PR after FTAI, natural mating, or overall.  相似文献

Eight sexually experienced long-term ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys were given tests of sexual behavior following treatment with 19-hydroxytestosterone (19-OH-T, 1 mg/day for 13 days), and their performance was compared with that following treatment with estradiol benzoate (EB, 10 μg/day for 13 days). Each female was tested for 10 min with each of nine adult males. Blood samples were taken on the last day of treatment with EB, at the end of the intervening 3-month period of no treatment, and on the last day of treatment with 19-OH-T. Blood levels of testosterone and estradiol were quantified by radioimmunoassay. Mean rate of presenting at a distance (proceptive behavior) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) when they were treated with 19-OH-T, but the ratio of presents to male contacts (receptive behavior) was significantly higher (P <0.05) when they were treated with EB. All other components of female sexual behavior were the same. Males displayed fewer annoyance responses (rejecting jerk, P < 0.05) when the females were treated with 19-OH-T than when they were treated with EB. All other male responses occurred with the same frequencies under the two female treatment conditions. Injection of 19-OH-T and EB both resulted in plasma testosterone and estradiol levels higher than those found in the untreated condition. Testosterone levels did not differ under the two treatments (P > 0.05), but estradiol levels were higher under EB treatment than under 19-OH-T (P < 0.05). This study suggests that both testosterone and estradiol are essential for maximum sexual performance and that various components of sexual behavior may be differentially influenced by the ratio of testosterone to estradiol in plasma.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effect of the type of norgestomet ear implant (new vs. used) on the ovarian follicular response (experiment 1) and pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI) (P/AI; experiment 2) of beef heifers subjected to an estradiol plus progestin timed artificial insemination (TAI) program. In experiment 1, 57 cyclic beef heifers were randomly assigned to one of two groups according to the type (new or previously used for 9 days) of norgestomet ear (NORG) implant. At the time of NORG implant insertion, the heifers were treated with 2 mg of intramuscular estradiol benzoate. Eight days later, the NORG implants were removed, and the heifers received an intramuscular administration of 150 μg of d-cloprostenol, 300 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin, and 0.5 mg of estradiol cypionate. The heifers had their ovaries scanned every 12 hours from the time of NORG implant removal to 96 hours after verifying the occurrence and timing of ovulation. No difference (P = 0.89) was observed in the ovulation rates between the two treatments (new = 80.0%; 24/30 vs. used = 81.5%; 22/27). However, the heifers treated with a used NORG implant had (P = 0.04) higher proportion (36.4%; 8/22) of early ovulation (between 36 and 48 hours after NORG implant removal) compared with the heifers treated with a new NORG implant (8.3%; 2/24). In experiment 2, at the beginning of the synchronization protocol, 416 beef heifers were randomly assigned into two groups, as described in the experiment 1. Two days after the NORG implant removal, the heifers were reassigned to be inseminated at 48 or 54 hours after NORG implant removal. There was an interaction (P = 0.03) between the type of NORG implant and the timing of TAI on P/AI. The timing of insemination only had an effect (P = 0.02) on the P/AI when the heifers were treated with a used NORG implant [(TAI 54 hours = 41.9% (44/105) vs. TAI 48 hours = 58.6% (58/99)]. In conclusion, beef heifers synchronized with a used NORG implant plus estradiol exhibited a higher proportion of earlier ovulations, and TAI in these heifers should be performed 48 hours after removal of used NORG implants.  相似文献

The objective was to determine whether the presence of fertility-associated antigen (FAA) on sperm collected from Nelore (Bos indicus) bulls can be used to assess potential fertility of sperm for use at first-service fixed-time AI (TAI). Six Nelore bulls were selected based on FAA status (FAA-negative: N = 3; FAA-positive: N = 3) and the ability to produce neat semen with ≥ 70% morphologically normal sperm and 60% estimated progressive motility before cryopreservation. In Experiment 1, suckled multiparous Nelore cows (N = 835) were evaluated for body condition score (BCS) and received an intravaginal progesterone device (CIDR) and 2.0 mg of estradiol benzoate (Day 0). On Day 9 the CIDR was removed, 12.5 mg of PGF and 0.5 mg of estradiol cypionate were administered, and calves were removed for 48 h. All cows received TAI on Day 11 (48 h after CIDR removal). Pregnancy per TAI (P/TAI) was not different between FAA-positive and FAA-negative bulls (41.5% vs. 39.3%, respectively). There was an effect of AI technician on P/TAI (36.0% vs. 43.9%; P < 0.05) and BCS tended to affect P/TAI (P = 0.09), as cows with BCS ≥ 2.75 were 1.4 times more likely to become pregnant compared with cows with BCS < 2.75. In Experiment 2, nulliparous Nelore heifers (N = 617) were evaluated for BCS and received a CIDR and estradiol benzoate (2.0 mg) on Day 0. On Day 7, all heifers received PGF (12.5 mg). On Day 9, CIDR inserts were removed and all heifers received estradiol cypionate (0.6 mg) and 200 IU eCG. All heifers received TAI on Day 11 (48 h after CIDR removal). Pregnancy/TAI was different (P = 0.04) between FAA-positive and FAA-negative bulls (33.7% vs. 40.7%, respectively). Presence of FAA on sperm was unsuccessful in assessing the potential fertility of sperm for use in TAI.  相似文献

The objectives were to determine if exposure of 12 mo old peri-puberal beef heifers to androgenized steers for 35 d hastened puberty, and if the response was related to the physical proximity between males and females and to heifer's initial body weight. Hereford x Aberdeen Angus heifers (n = 131), 12 mo old, were assigned to two treatments: 1) Exposed group, exposed to androgenized steers from Day 0 to Day 35 (E, n = 66); or 2) Control group, isolated from the steers and other males (C, n = 65). Cyclic activity was determined through estrous behavior detection (twice daily) and weekly ultrasound imaging to detect a CL. For each Exposed heifer, an association index (with males) was determined thrice weekly, based on the distance to androgenized steers every 10 min for 4 h (until cyclic activity began). Data were analyzed according to heifer's initial body weight, which was categorized into three ranges (low, medium, and high, designated LW, MW, and HW, respectively). The cumulative proportion of cyclic heifers was greater for Exposed than Control heifers as of Day 21. By the end of the exposure period, more Exposed than Control heifers had attained puberty (16/66 vs. 2/65; P < 0.001). Within the HW classification, more Exposed than Control heifers became puberal (11/20 vs. 2/21; P = 0.002). However, there were no differences between MW and LW in the proportions of heifers that reached puberty. Association index in Exposed heifers was greater in HW than in MW and LW (0.10 ± 0.09 vs. 0.06 ± 0.03 and 0.06 ± 0.04; P < 0.05), and in heifers that began cyclic activity compared to those that did not in the MW heifers (0.09 ± 0.05 vs. 0.05 ± 0.02; P = 0.01) and tended to be different in the HW treatment (0.12 ± 0.10 vs. 0.06 ± 0.02; P = 0.09). In conclusion, exposure of peri-puberal beef heifers to androgenized steers for 35 d advanced puberty in heavier heifers; an earlier response occurred in heifers with greater proximity to androgenized steers.  相似文献

Sixty-eight 12- to 14-month-old crossbred beef heifers averaging 285 kg were assigned at random to treated (n = 35) and control (n = 33) groups to evaluate the use of repetitive norgestomet treatments. Treated heifers received an ear implant containing 6 mg norgestomet on two occasions 16 days apart. Injections of 3 mg norgestomet and 5 mg estradiol valerate (EV) were given intramuscularly the same day as first implantation (Syncro-Mate-B). Implants were removed after eight days. Four bulls were then placed in each of two pastures containing half of the treated and half of the control heifers for 24 days after the time of the first implant removal. Progesterone concentrations from blood samples collected prior to the first treatment were used to determine reproductive status. The overall pregnancy rate 64 days after first implant removal for treated anestrous heifers (61%; 14 23 ) was similar (p > 0.25) to untreated (73%; 11 15 ) and treated (75%; 9 12 ) cyclic heifers, but higher (p < 0.1) than for untreated anestrous heifers (33%; 6 18 ). This treatment advantage resulted from an increased (p < 0.01) pregnancy rate after the second implant removal. In summary, repetitive norgestomet treatments enhanced pregnancy rate in anestrous heifers within a 24-day breeding season.  相似文献

The objective was to compare pregnancy rates following fixed-time AI (FTAI) in beef cattle given a new or previously used CIDR insert and injections of estradiol, with or without progesterone, to synchronize follicular wave emergence. In Experiment 1, heifers (n=616) received a new or once-used CIDR insert for 9 days and were given 1mg estradiol cypionate (ECP), with or without 100 mg of a commercial progesterone preparation (CP4), at CIDR insertion. Heifers were treated with PGF at CIDR removal and 0.5 mg ECP i.m. 24h later, with FTAI 55 to 60 h after CIDR removal. Pregnancy rate was not affected by either the number of CIDR uses (P=0.59; 48.3% versus 46.2% for new versus once-used CIDRs, respectively) or the addition of progesterone (P=0.42; 45.6% versus 48.8% for ECP+CP4 and ECP, respectively). In Experiment 2 (replicated at two locations), heifers (n=56) and lactating beef cows (n=307) received a once- or twice-used CIDR and an i.m. injection of 1mg estradiol benzoate (EB), with or without 100 mg progesterone, at CIDR insertion. Cattle received PGF in the ischiorectal fossa at CIDR removal (Day 7) and 1mg EB i.m. 24h later, with FTAI 52 to 56 h after CIDR removal. Pregnancy rate was affected by location (P<0.002; 46.0% versus 61.1% for Locations A and B, respectively), parity (P<0.04; 67.9% versus 53.1% in heifers and cows, respectively), and numbers of times the CIDR had been used (P<0.03; 62.4% versus 48.4% for once- and twice-used CIDRs, respectively). However, the addition of progesterone to the injection of EB at CIDR insertion did not affect pregnancy rate (P=0.6). In Experiment 3, heifers (n=187) received one new, one once-used, one twice-used or two twice-used CIDRs for 7 days and 2 mg EB plus 50 mg of CP4 at the time of CIDR insertion. Heifers were treated with PGF at CIDR removal and 1mg EB i.m. 24 h later, with FTAI 52-56 h after CIDR removal. Pregnancy rate was not affected by treatments (P=0.28, 57.5, 63.8, 47.9, 47.9% for one new, one once-used, one twice-used, or two twice-used CIDRs, respectively). In summary, pregnancy rate to FTAI did not differ between cattle synchronized with a new or once-used CIDR, but pregnancy rate was lower in cattle synchronized with a twice-used CIDR; however, the insertion of two twice-used CIDRs did not affect pregnancy rates. The addition of an injection of progesterone to the estradiol treatment at CIDR insertion did not enhance pregnancy rate to FTAI.  相似文献
